In the current context of water environmental monitoring and pollution control, there's a crucial need for rapid and simple methods to detect multi-pollutant. We herein report an easy one-step hydrothermal synthesis method to produce Eu-based metal-organic frameworks (Eu MOFs), which was used as a fluorescent probe to detect the aquatic environmental pollutants of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and aluminum ions (Al 3+ ). This fluorescent sensor enabled the cascade detection of CIP and Al 3+ through fluorescence enhancement and ratio fluorescence response, respectively. The introduction of CIP significantly turned on the characteristic fluorescence of Eu MOFs at 595 nm and 616 nm through the "antenna effect". Based on this, the sensor enables quantitative detection of CIP within a linear range of 0-120 μM with a LOD as low as 50.421 nM. In the presence of Al 3+ , the fluorescence emission of Eu MOFs-CIP was sharply turned off due to strong Al 3+ coordination with CIP, while the blue fluorescence emission of CIP was remarkably enhanced. And thus allowing ratio fluorescence quantitative detection of Al 3+ (LOD = 2.681 μM). The introduction of CIP and Al 3+ in cascade resulted in distinct fluorescence color changes from colorless to red and eventually to blue, exhibiting pronounced fluorescence characteristics. This observable phenomenon enables the visual detection of CIP and Al 3+ in both aqueous phase and paper test strips. The intestinal mucosal barrier-comprising microbial, mechanical, chemical, and immunological barriers-is critical to protection against pathogens and maintenance of host health; however, it remains unclear whether it is affected by environmental contaminants. Therefore, the present study assessed whether exposure to ambient concentrations of nanopolystyrene (NP) and chrysene (CHR)-two ubiquitous environmental pollutants in the aquatic environment-affect the intestinal mucosal barrier in juvenile Siniperca chuatsi. After exposure for 21 days, S. chuatsi exhibited intestinal oxidative stress and imbalance of intestinal microbial homeostasis. NP and/or CHR exposure also disrupted the intestinal mechanical barrier, as evidenced by the altered intestinal epithelial cell morphology, disrupted structure of intercellular tight junctions, and decreased expression of tight junction proteins. Damage to the intestinal chemical barrier manifested as thinning of the mucus layer owing to the loss and damage of goblet cells. Furthermore, the intestinal immunological barrier was impaired as indicated by the loss of intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes and increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and immunoglobulins. These findings collectively suggest that the intestinal mucosal barrier was damaged. Anthropogenic Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in marine environments have raised significant concerns. Yet, analyses detailing their origins, fate, and environmental effects are limited. This study employs an integrated non-target screening methodology to elucidate CECs existence across 46 sampling sites in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) of the South China Sea. Assisted by advanced liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry, we discovered 208 chemicals in six usage categories, with pesticides (33 %) and pharmaceuticals (29 %) predominating. Several CECs drew attention for their consistent detections, profound abundance, and significant ecotoxicities. The wide detection of them at offshore sites further implies that anthropogenic activities may contribute to large-scale contamination. Meanwhile, distinct distribution patterns of CECs across PRE are evident in semi-quantitative results, indicating regional anthropogenic influences. Identified transformation products may establish a novel and non-negligible negative contribution to ecology through elevated environmental toxicities, exemplified by HMMM and atrazine. Based on the ecological risks, we compiled a prioritized list of 21 CECs warranting intensified scrutiny. A remarkable progress has been made toward the air quality improvements over the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China from 2017 to 2020. In this study, for the first time, the emission reductions of regional control measures together with the COVID-19 pandemic were considered simultaneously into the development of the GBA's emission inventories for the years of 2017 and 2020. Based on these collective emission inventories, the impacts of control measures, meteorological variations together with temporary COVID-19 lockdowns on the five major air quality index pollutants (SO 2 , NO 2 , PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and O 3 , excluding CO) were evaluated using the WRF-CMAQ and SMAT-CE model attainment assessment tool over the GBA region. Our results revealed that control measures in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region affected significantly the GBA, resulting in pollutant reductions ranging from 48 % to 64 %. In contrast, control measures in Hong Kong and Macao contributed to pollutant reductions up to 10 %. In PRD emission sectors, stationary combustion, on-road, industrial processes and dust sectors stand out as the primary contributors to overall air quality improvements. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic during period I (Jan 23-Feb 23) led to a reduction of NO 2 concentration by 7.4 %, resulting in a negative contribution (disbenefit) for O 3 with an increase by 2.4 %. The current study examined the level of Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in tumor and blood serum of female breast cancer patients and control individuals recruited from Punjab, Pakistan. Breast tumor and blood serum from 40 patients and only blood serum from ten control subjects were obtained and concentration of 32 PCB congeners was analyzed through Gas chromatography coupled with Mass spectrophotometry. Sociodemographic variables of the patients along with essential clinical and haematological parameters were taken as covariates. Tumor reflects the highest median (min-max) concentration (ng g -1 lw) of ƩPCBs at 115.94 (0.05-17.75) followed by 16.53 (0.09-2.94) and 5.24 (0.01-0.59) in blood serum of cancer patients and control group respectively. Median concentrations (ng g -1 lw) of non-dioxine like ƩPCBs were considerably higher at 83.04, 32.89 and 4.27 compared to 13.03 and 3.50 and 0.97 for dioxin like ƩPCBs in tumor, serum of breast cancer patients and control subjects respectively. PCB-87 was most dominant congeners in tumor followed by PCB-170 and -82 whereas PCB-28 and -52 reflected greatest contribution in serum of breast cancer patients. Blood haemoglobin, potassium and chloride ions showed significant positive whereas body mass index reflect inverse relationship when regressed with ƩPCBs in tumor. This pioneer study depicts elevated concentrations of PCBs in patients compared to control, reflecting potential positive association of PCBs with breast cancer which need further confirmation. Parabens and triclocarban are widely applied as antimicrobial preservatives in foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and personal care products. However, few studies have been conducted on large-scale biomonitoring of parabens and triclocarban in the Chinese general population. In the present study, there were 1157 urine samples collected from 26 Chinese provincial capitals for parabens and triclocarban measurement to evaluate the exposure levels, spatial distribution, and influencing factors, as well as associated health risks in the Chinese population. The median concentrations of Σparabens and triclocarban were 14.0 and 0.03 μg/L, respectively. Methyl paraben was the predominant compound. Subjects in western China were more exposed to parabens, possibly due to climate differences resulting in higher consumption of personal care products. Subjects who were female, aged 18-44 years, or had a higher education level were found to have higher paraben concentrations. The frequency of drinking bottled water was positively associated with paraben exposure. The assessment of health risk based on urinary paraben concentrations indicated that 0.8 % of the subjects had a hazard index exceeding one unit, while Monte Carlo analysis suggested that 3.6 % of the Chinese population exposure to parabens had a potential non-carcinogenic risk. Urban stormwater is an alternative water source used to mitigate water resource shortages, and ensuring the safety of stormwater reuse is essential. An in-depth understanding of both individual pollutant concentrations/loads in stormwater and holistic stormwater quality can be used to comprehensively evaluate how safely stormwater can be reused. The toxicity test takes all pollutants present in water samples into account, and the results reflect the integrated effect of these pollutants. In this study, the influence of urban stormwater sourced from different land uses on microalgae (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) and the possible toxicity mechanisms were investigated. The results showed that urban stormwater, particularly residential road stormwater, significantly inhibited microalgal growth. The chlorophyll contents of microalgae exposed to residential road stormwater were relatively lower, while the corresponding values were relatively higher for microalgae exposed to grassland road stormwater. Additionally, the antioxidant-related metabolism of microalgae could be dysregulated due to exposure to urban stormwater. A possible toxicity mechanism is that urban stormwater influences metabolic pathways related to chlorophyll synthesis and further hinders photosynthesis and hence microalgal growth. To resist oxidative stress and maintain regular microalgal cell activities, the ribosome metabolism pathway was upregulated. The research results contribute to elucidating the toxicity effects of urban stormwater and hence provide useful insight for ensuring the safety of stormwater reuse. It is also worth noting that the study outcomes can only represent the influence of land use on stormwater toxicity, while the impacts of other factors (particularly rainfall-runoff characteristics) have not been considered. Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose a threat to organisms and ecosystems due to their persistent nature. Ecotoxicology endpoints used in regulatory guidelines may not reflect multiple, low-level but persistent stressors. This study examines the biological effects of PFAS on Eastern short-necked turtles in Queensland, Australia. In this study, blood samples were collected and analysed for PFAS, hormone levels, and functional omics endpoints. High levels of PFAS were found in turtles at the impacted site, with PFOS being the dominant constituent. The PFAS profiles of males and females differed, with males having higher PFAS concentrations. Hormone concentrations differed between impacted and reference sites in male turtles, with elevated testosterone and corticosterone indicative of stress. Further, energy utilisation, nucleotide synthesis, nitrogen metabolism, and amino acid synthesis were altered in both male and female turtles from PFAS-impacted sites. Both sexes show similar metabolic responses to environmental stressors from the PFAS-contaminated site, which may adversely affect their reproductive fitness. Purine metabolism, caffeine metabolism, and ferroptosis pathway changes in turtles can cause gout, cell death, and overall health problems. This study investigates the intricate interplay between environmental pollutants and exosomes, shedding light on a novel paradigm in environmental health and disease. Cellular stress, induced by environmental toxicants or disease, significantly impacts the production and composition of exosomes, crucial mediators of intercellular communication. The heat shock response (HSR) and unfolded protein response (UPR) pathways, activated during cellular stress, profoundly influence exosome generation, cargo sorting, and function, shaping intercellular communication and stress responses. Environmental pollutants, particularly lipophilic ones, directly interact with exosome lipid bilayers, potentially affecting membrane stability, release, and cellular uptake. The study reveals that exposure to environmental contaminants induces significant changes in exosomal proteins, miRNAs, and lipids, impacting cellular function and health. Understanding the impact of environmental pollutants on exosomal cargo holds promise for biomarkers of exposure, enabling non-invasive sample collection and real-time insights into ongoing cellular responses. This research explores the potential of exosomal biomarkers for early detection of health effects, assessing treatment efficacy, and population-wide screening. Overcoming challenges requires advanced isolation techniques, standardized protocols, and machine learning for data analysis. Background: No study has examined the association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk. This study aims to explore this relationship., Methods: This study enrolled 4541 individuals who had available data on PFAS, COPD, and covariates from NHANES 2007-2018. Serum PFAS including perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) were analyzed, because of high detective rates. Considering the skew distribution of PFAS levels, the natural logarithm-transformed PFAS (Ln-PFAS) was used. Logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were performed to explore the single, nonlinear, and mixed effects. A mediating analysis was used to evaluate the mediated effects of albumin., Results: Individuals with COPD had higher levels of PFHxS, PFNA, PFOA, and PFOS compared to those without COPD. Ln-PFNA (OR males : 1.92, 95 % CI:1.31 to 2.80, P: <0.001; OR females : 1.07, 95 % CI: 0.81 to 1.40, P: 0.636) and ln-PFOA (OR males : 2.17, 95 % CI:1.38 to 3.41, P: <0.001; OR females : 1.49, 95 % CI: 1.08 to 2.05, P: 0.016) were associated with COPD risk especially in males. The interaction between PFNA exposure and sex on COPD risk was significant (P interaction : <0.001). The RCS curve demonstrated the nonlinear relationship between the ln-PFOA (P nonlinear :0.001), ln-PFNA (P nonlinear :0.045), and COPD risk in males. WQS analysis showed mixed PFAS exposure was correlated with COPD risk in males (OR: 1.44, 95 % CI:1.18 to 1.75, P: <0.001). Albumin mediated the relationship between PFOA and COPD (mediated proportion: -17.94 %)., Conclusion: This study concludes PFOA and PFNA are linked to a higher COPD risk in males, and serum albumin plays a mediating role in the relationship between PFOA and COPD. Thess findings are beneficial for the prevention of COPD.
