Abstract Rivers are important sites of both nitrogen removal and emission of nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a powerful greenhouse gas. Previous measurements have focused on nitrogen-rich temperate rivers, with cold, low-nitrogen river systems at high-altitude receiving less attention. Here, nitrogen removal rates were estimated by directly measuring dissolved N 2 and N 2 O of the Yellow River in its source region of the Tibetan Plateau, a frigid high-altitude environment. We measured the dissolved N 2 and N 2 O using N 2 :Ar ratio method and headspace equilibrium technique, respectively. Dissolved N 2 in the river water ranged from 337 to 513 μmol N 2 L−1, and dissolved N 2 O ranged from 10.4 to 15.4 nmol N 2 O L−1. Excess dissolved N 2 (△N 2) ranged from −8.6 to 10.5 μmol N 2 L−1, while excess dissolved N 2 O (△N 2 O) ranged from 2.1 to 8.3 nmol N 2 O L−1; they were relatively low compared with most other rivers in the world. However, N 2 removal fraction (△N 2 /DIN, average 21.6%) and EF 5r values (N 2 O − N/NO 3 − N, range 1.6 × 10−4–5.0 × 10−2) were comparable with many other rivers despite the high altitude for the Yellow River source region. Furthermore, the EF 5r values increased with altitude. Estimated fluxes of N 2 and N 2 O to the atmosphere from the river surface ranged from −67.5 to 93.5 mmol N m−2 d−1 and from 4.8 to 93.8 μmol N m−2 d−1, respectively, and the nitrogen removal from rivers was estimated to be 1.87 × 107 kg N yr−1 for the Yellow River source region. This is the first report of nitrogen removal for a frigid high-altitude river; the results suggest that N removal and N 2 O emission from cold high-altitude rivers should be considered in the global nitrogen budget. Accounting for nitrogen (N) release from organic amendments (OA) can reduce the use of synthetic N-fertiliser, sustain crop production, and potentially reduce soil borne greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. However, it is difficult to assess the GHG mitigation potential for OA as a substitute of N-fertiliser over the long term due to only part of the organic N added to soil is being released in the first year after application. High-resolution nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions monitored from a horticultural crop rotation over 2.5 years from conventional urea application rates were compared to treatments receiving an annual application of raw and composted chicken manure combined with conventional and reduced N-fertiliser rates. The repeated application of composted manure did not increase annual N 2 O emissions while the application of raw manure resulted in N 2 O emissions up to 35.2 times higher than the zero N fertiliser treatment and up to 4.7 times higher than conventional N-fertiliser rate due to an increase in C and N availability following the repeated application of raw OA. The main factor driving N 2 O emissions was the incorporation of organic material accompanied by high soil moisture while the application of synthetic N-fertiliser induced only short-term N 2 O emission pulse. The average annual N 2 O emission factor calculated accounting for the total N applied including OA was equal to 0.27 ± 0.17%, 3.7 times lower than the IPCC default value. Accounting for the estimated N release from OA only enabled a more realistic N 2 O emission factor to be defined for organically amended field that was equal to 0.48 ± 0.3%. This study demonstrated that accounting for the N released from repeated application of composted rather than raw manure can be a viable pathway to reduce N 2 O emissions and maintain soil fertility. Inland aquaculture ponds in China collectively cover 2.57 million ha, so emissions of the greenhouse gases methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) from these ponds may constitute a significant contribution to global warming. During 2016 and 2017, CH 4 and N 2 O fluxes and a range of pond-water and sediment properties were measured in replicated ( n  = 4) “mixed-fish” and “crab” aquaculture ponds in southeast China. Annual CH 4 and N 2 O emissions were 64.4 kg C ha −1 and 2.99 kg N ha −1 , respectively, from the “mixed-fish” ponds, and 51.6 kg C ha −1 and 3.32 kg N ha −1 , respectively, from the “crab” ponds. Emission differences between pond types were significant ( p  < 0.05) for both gases. CH 4 fluxes from the “crab” ponds were significantly increased by the presence of aquatic vegetation, but N 2 O fluxes were not affected. Emissions of N 2 O were estimated to be 0.54% and 0.71% of the total nitrogen input (in the feed) for the “mixed-fish” and “crab” ponds, respectively. The net economic benefit-scaled sustained-flux global warming potential (NEB-scaled SGWP) of the “crab” ponds was 61.6% higher ( p  < 0.05) than that of the “mixed-fish” pond. Our CH 4 and N 2 O emissions results suggest that aquaculture ponds can be important contributors to regional and national GHG inventories, with aquaculture type an important factor in total GHG impact. Further CH 4 and N 2 O flux research is needed at aquaculture ponds across China to better establish the range of potential GHG impacts, and to confirm the importance of the influencing factors identified in this study. Linking microbial community structure to physiology and ecological processes is a critical focus of microbial ecology. To understand the microbial functional gene patterns related to soil greenhouse gas [carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O)] emissions under oil contamination, we used functional gene array (GeoChip 5.0) analysis and network methods to investigate the feedback responses of soil microbial functional gene patterns and identify keystone genes in Shengli Oilfield, China. The microbial functional gene number, relative abundance and diversity involved in carbon degradation and nitrogen cycling decreased consistently with the reduced CO 2 and N 2 O flux in oil contaminated soils, whereas the gene number and relative abundance of methane-production related genes increased with contamination. Functional molecular ecological networks were built based on random matrix theory, where network structures and properties showed significantly variation between oil contaminated and uncontaminated soils ( P < 0.05). Network nodes, connectivity and complexity all reduced under oil contamination. The sensitive and the highest connective genes in the network were identified as keystone genes, based on Mann-Whitney U tests and network analysis. Efforts have been made in recent years to improve knowledge about soil greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes from sub-Saharan Africa. However, data on soil GHG emissions from smallholder coffee-dairy systems have not hitherto been measured experimentally. This study aimed to quantify soil GHG emissions at different spatial and temporal scales in smallholder coffee-dairy farms in Murang'a County, Central Kenya. GHG measurements were carried out for one year, comprising two cropping seasons, using vented static chambers and gas chromatography. Sixty rectangular frames were installed on two farms comprising the three main cropping systems found in the area: 1) coffee ( Coffea arabica L.); 2) Napier grass ( Pennisetum purpureum ); and 3) maize intercropped with beans ( Zea mays and Phaseolus vulgaris ). Within these fields, chambers were allocated on fertilised and unfertilised locations to capture spatial variability. Cumulative annual fluxes in coffee plots ranged from 1 to 1.9 kg N 2 O-N ha − 1 , 6.5 to 7.6 Mg CO 2 -C ha − 1 and − 3.4 to − 2.2 kg CH 4 -C ha − 1 , with 66% to 94% of annual GHG fluxes occurring during rainy seasons. Across the farm plots, coffee received most of the N inputs and had 56% to 89% higher emissions of N 2 O than Napier grass, maize and beans. Within farm plots, two to six times higher emissions were found in fertilised hotspots – around the perimeter of coffee trees or within planted maize rows – than in unfertilised locations between trees, rows and planting holes. Background and induced soil N 2 O emissions from fertiliser and manure applications in the three cropping systems were lower than hypothesized from previous studies and empirical models. This study supplements methods and underlying data for the quantification of GHG emissions at multiple spatial and temporal scales in tropical, smallholder farming systems. Nitrogen pollution is a worldwide problem and has been extensively treated by canonical denitrification (CDN) process. However, the CDN process generates several issues such as intensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In the past years, a novel biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process of oxygenic denitrification (O2DN) has been proposed as a promising alternative to the CDN process. The classic denitrification four steps are simplified to three steps by O2DN bacteria without producing and releasing the intermediate nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a potent GHG. In this article, we summarized the findings in previous literatures as well as our results, including involved microorganisms and metabolic mechanisms, functional genes and microbial detection, kinetics and influencing factors and their potential applications in wastewater treatment. Based on our knowledge and experience, the benefits and limitations of the current O2DN process were analyzed. Since O2DN is a new field in wastewater treatment, more research and application is required, especially the development of integrated processes and the quantitative assessment of the contribution of O2DN process in natural habitats and engineered systems. Livestock manure application can stimulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially methane (CH 4 ) in rice paddy. The stabilized organic matter (OM) is recommended to suppress CH 4 emission without counting the additional GHG emission during the composting process. To evaluate the effect of compost utilization on the net global warming potential (GWP) of a rice cropping system, the fluxes of GHGs from composting to land application were calculated by a life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The model framework was composed of GHG fluxes from industrial activities and biogenic GHG fluxes from the composting and rice cultivation processes. Fresh manure emitted 30 Mg CO 2 -eq. ha − 1 , 90% and 10% of which were contributed by CH 4 and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) fluxes, respectively, during rice cultivation. Compost utilization decreased net GWP by 25% over that of the fresh manure during the whole process. The composting process increased the GWP of the industrial processes by 35%, but the 60% reduction in CH 4 emissions from the rice paddy mainly influenced the reduction of GWP during the overall process. Biochar amendment has been proposed as a potential solution for improving soil quality and suppressing greenhouse gas emission. Considering the serious nitrogen fertilizer overuse problem in China, it is important to investigate the effect of biochar on soil with excess nitrogen fertilizer. Therefore, two sets of soil column experiments were conducted to explore the effect of biochar on N 2 O emission from nitrogen fertilizer-overused soil. Three types of biochar (biochars pyrolzed at 300, 500 and 700 °C, respectively) and one type of nitrogen fertilizer (ammonium sulfate) were investigated at varying application rates. It was found that N 2 O emission was related to both biochar and N-fertilizer application rates, and increased N 2 O emission was negatively correlated with the TC/IN ratio (the ratio of total carbon to inorganic nitrogen) after biochar application. The soil TC/IN ratio determined the ammonium utilization pathway, affecting the intensity of nitrification and N 2 O emission. When the TC/IN ratio was relatively high (> 60), suppressed nitrification led to the suppression of N 2 O emission. Conversely, enhanced nitrification when the TC/IN ratio was relatively low (< 45) caused the promotion of N 2 O emission. In conclusion, biochar's suppression of soil N 2 O emission was conditional and biochar should be applied in a proper ratio to nitrogen fertilizer to avoid excessive N 2 O emission. Biochar has been frequently suggested as an amendment to improve soil quality and mitigate climate change. To investigate the optimal management of nitrogen (N) fertilization, we examined the combined effect of biochar and N fertilizer on plant N uptake and N 2 O emissions in a cereal rotation system in a randomized two-factorial field experiment on a sandy loam soil in Brandenburg, Germany. The biochar treatment received 10 Mg ha − 1 wood-derived biochar in September 2012. Four levels of N fertilizer, corresponding to 0, 50%, 100%, 130% of the recommended fertilizer level, were applied in winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.)) and winter rye ( Secale cereal L . ) in 2013 and 2014 followed by the catch crop oil radish ( Raphanus sativus L. var. oleiformis ). Biomass and N uptake of winter wheat and winter rye were significantly affected by the level of N fertilizer but not by biochar. For N uptake of oil radish an interaction effect was observed for biochar and N fertilizer. Without applied fertilizer, 39% higher N uptake was found in the presence of biochar, accompanied by higher soil NH 4 + content and elevated cumulative CO 2 emissions. At 130% of the recommended fertilizer level, 16% lower N uptake and lower cumulative N 2 O emissions were found in the biochar-mediated treatment. No significant change in abundance of microbial groups and nosZ gene were observed. Anthropogenic emissions of nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a trace gas with severe environmental costs, are greatest from agricultural soils amended with nitrogen (N) fertilizer. However, accurate N 2 O emission estimates at fine spatial scales are made difficult by their high variability, which represents a critical challenge for the management of N 2 O emissions. Here, static chamber measurements ( n = 60) and soil samples ( n = 129) were collected at approximately weekly intervals ( n = 6) for 42-d immediately following the application of N in a southern Minnesota cornfield (15.6-ha), typical of the systems prevalent throughout the U.S. Corn Belt. These data were integrated into a geostatistical model that resolved N 2 O emissions at a high spatial resolution (1-m). Field-scale N 2 O emissions exhibited a high degree of spatial variability, and were partitioned into three classes of emission strength: hotspots, intermediate, and coldspots. Rates of emission from hotspots were 2-fold greater than non-hotspot locations. Consequently, 36% of the field-scale emissions could be attributed to hotspots, despite representing only 21% of the total field area. Variations in elevation caused hotspots to develop in predictable locations, which were prone to nutrient and moisture accumulation caused by terrain focusing. Because these features are relatively static, our data and analyses indicate that targeted management of hotspots could efficiently reduce field-scale emissions by as much 17%, a significant benefit considering the deleterious effects of atmospheric N 2 O. Cattle excreta deposited on grazed grasslands are a major source of the greenhouse gas (GHG) nitrous oxide (N 2 O). Currently, many countries use the IPCC default emission factor (EF) of 2% to estimate excreta-derived N 2 O emissions. However, emissions can vary greatly depending on the type of excreta (dung or urine), soil type and timing of application. Therefore three experiments were conducted to quantify excreta-derived N 2 O emissions and their associated EFs, and to assess the effect of soil type, season of application and type of excreta on the magnitude of losses. Cattle dung, urine and artificial urine treatments were applied in spring, summer and autumn to three temperate grassland sites with varying soil and weather conditions. Nitrous oxide emissions were measured from the three experiments over 12 months to generate annual N 2 O emission factors. The EFs from urine treated soil was greater (0.30–4.81% for real urine and 0.13–3.82% for synthetic urine) when compared with dung (− 0.02–1.48%) treatments. Nitrous oxide emissions were driven by environmental conditions and could be predicted by rainfall and temperature before, and soil moisture deficit after application; highlighting the potential for a decision support tool to reduce N 2 O emissions by modifying grazing management based on these parameters. Emission factors varied seasonally with the highest EFs in autumn and were also dependent on soil type, with the lowest EFs observed from well-drained and the highest from imperfectly drained soil. The EFs averaged 0.31 and 1.18% for cattle dung and urine, respectively, both of which were considerably lower than the IPCC default value of 2%. The addition of organic amendments to agricultural soils has the potential to increase crop yields, reduce dependence on inorganic fertilizers and improve soil condition and resilience. We evaluated the effect of biochar (B), compost (C) and co-composted biochar (COMBI) on the soil properties, crop yield and greenhouse gas emissions from a banana and a papaya plantation in tropical Australia in the first harvest cycle. Biochar, compost and COMBI organic amendments improved soil properties, including significant increases in soil water content, CEC, K, Ca, NO 3 , NH 4 and soil carbon content. However, increases in soil nutrient content and improvements in physical properties did not translate to improved fruit yield. Counter to our expectations, banana crop yield (weight per bunch) was reduced by 18%, 12% and 24% by B, C and COMBI additions respectively, and no significant effect was observed on the papaya crop yield. Soil efflux of CO 2 was elevated by addition of C and COMBI amendments, likely due to an increase in labile carbon for microbial processing. Our data indicate a reduction in N 2 O flux in treatments containing biochar. The application of B, C and COMBI amendments had a generally positive effect on soil properties, but this did not translate into a crop productivity increase in this study. The benefits to soil nutrient content, soil carbon storage and N 2 O emission reduction need to be carefully weighed against potentially deleterious effects on crop yield, at least in the short-term. Wetland restoration has been suggested as policy goal with multiple environmental benefits including enhancement of atmospheric carbon sequestration. However, there are concerns that increased methane (CH 4 ) emissions associated with restoration may outweigh potential benefits. A comprehensive, 4-year study of 119 wetland catchments was conducted in the Prairie Pothole Region of the north-central U.S. to assess the effects of land use on greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes and soil properties. Results showed that the effects of land use on GHG fluxes and abiotic soil properties differed with respect to catchment zone (upland, wetland), wetland classification, geographic location, and year. Mean CH 4 fluxes from the uplands were predictably low (< 0.02 g CH 4 m − 2 day − 1 ), while wetland zone CH 4 fluxes were much greater (< 0.001–3.9 g CH 4 m − 2 day − 1 ). Mean cumulative seasonal CH 4 fluxes ranged from roughly 0–650 g CH 4 m − 2 , with an overall mean of approximately 160 g CH 4 m − 2 . These maximum cumulative CH 4 fluxes were nearly 3 times as high as previously reported in North America. The overall magnitude and variability of N 2 O fluxes from this study (< 0.0001–0.0023 g N 2 O m − 2 day − 1 ) were comparable to previously reported values. Results suggest that soil organic carbon is lost when relatively undisturbed catchments are converted for agriculture, and that when non-drained cropland catchments are restored, CH 4 fluxes generally are not different than the pre-restoration baseline. Conversely, when drained cropland catchments are restored, CH 4 fluxes are noticeably higher. Consequently, it is important to consider the type of wetland restoration (drained, non-drained) when assessing restoration benefits. Results also suggest that elevated N 2 O fluxes from cropland catchments likely would be reduced through restoration. The overall variability demonstrated by this study was consistent with findings of other wetland investigations and underscores the difficulty in quantifying the GHG balance of wetland systems. Coastal areas are subject to a great anthropogenic pressure because more than half of the world's population lives in its vicinity causing organic matter inputs, which intensifies greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Dissolved concentrations of CH 4 and N 2 O have been measured seasonally during 2013 in the Guadalete River Estuary, which flows into the Cadiz Bay (southwestern Spanish coast). It has been intensely contaminated since 1970. Currently it receives wastewater effluents from cities and direct discharges from nearby agriculture crop. Eight sampling stations have been established along 18 km of the estuary. CH 4 and N 2 O were measured using a gas chromatograph connected to an equilibration system. Additional parameters such as organic matter, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and chlorophyll were determinate as well, in order to understand the relationship between physicochemical and biological processes. Gas concentrations increased from the River mouth toward the inner part, closer to the wastewater treatment plant discharge. Values varied widely within 21.8 and 3483.4 nM for CH 4 and between 9.7 and 147.6 nM for N 2 O. Greenhouse gas seasonal variations were large influenced by the precipitation regime, masking the temperature influence. The Guadatete Estuary acted as a greenhouse gas source along the year, with mean fluxes of 495.7 μmol m − 2 d − 1 and 92.8 μmol m − 2 d − 1 for CH 4 and N 2 O, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing segments of the food economy in modern times. It is also being considered as an important source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To date, limited studies have been conducted on GHG emissions from aquaculture system. In this study, daily addition of fish feed and soluble starch at a carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 16:1 (w/w) was used to examine the effects of carbohydrate addition on nitrogen transformations and GHG emissions in a zero-water exchange intensive aquaculture system. The addition of soluble starch stimulated heterotrophic bacterial growth and denitrification, which led to lower total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite and nitrate concentrations in aqueous phase. About 76.2% of the nitrogen output was emitted in the form of gaseous nitrogen (i.e., N2 and N2O) in the treatment tank (i.e., aquaculture tank with soluble starch addition), while gaseous nitrogen accounted for 33.3% of the nitrogen output in the control tank (i.e., aquaculture tank without soluble starch addition). Although soluble starch addition reduced daily N2O emissions by 83.4%, it resulted in an increase of daily carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 91.1%. Abstract: A series of environmental policies have been implemented in the European Union (EU) to decrease nitrogen (N) emissions from agriculture. The Nitrates Directive (ND) is one of the main policies; it aims to reduce nitrate leaching from agriculture through a number of measures. A study was carried out to quantify the effects of the ND in the EU-27 on the leaching and runoff of nitrate (NO3 −) to groundwater and surface waters, and on the emissions of ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and dinitrogen (N2) to the atmosphere. We formulated a scenario with and a scenario without implementation of the ND. The model MITERRA-Europe was used to calculate N emissions on a regional level in the EU-27 for the period 2000–2008. The calculated total N loss from agriculture in the EU-27 was 13Mton N in 2008, with 53% as N2, 22% as NO3, 21% as NH3, 3% as N2O, and 1% as NOx. The N emissions and leaching in the EU-27 slightly decreased in the period 2000–2008. Total emissions in the EU in 2008 were smaller with implementation of the ND than without the ND, by 3% for NH3, 6% for N2O, 9% for NOx, and 16% for N leaching and runoff in 2008. However, regional differences were large. The lower emissions with ND were mainly due to the lower N inputs by fertilizers and manures. In conclusion, implementation of the ND decreased both N leaching losses to ground and surface waters, and gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. It is expected that the ND will result in a further decrease in N emissions in EU-27 in the near future, because the implementation of the measures for the ND is expected to become more strict. It is anticipated that organic farming systems provide benefits concerning soil conservation and climate protection. A literature search on measured soil-derived greenhouse gas (GHG) (nitrous oxide and methane) fluxes under organic and non-organic management from farming system comparisons was conducted and followed by a meta-analysis. Up to date only 19 studies based on field measurements could be retrieved. Based on 12 studies that cover annual measurements, it appeared with a high significance that area-scaled nitrous oxide emissions from organically managed soils are 492±160kg CO2 eq. ha−1 a−1 lower than from non-organically managed soils. For arable soils the difference amounts to 497±162kg CO2 eq. ha−1 a−1. However, yield-scaled nitrous oxide emissions are higher by 41±34kg CO2 eq. t−1 DM under organic management (arable and use). To equalize this mean difference in yield-scaled nitrous oxide emissions between both farming systems, the yield gap has to be less than 17%. Emissions from conventionally managed soils seemed to be influenced mainly by total N inputs, whereas for organically managed soils other variables such as soil characteristics seemed to be more important. This can be explained by the higher bioavailability of the synthetic N fertilisers in non-organic farming systems while the necessary mineralisation of the N sources under organic management leads to lower and retarded availability. Furthermore, a higher methane uptake of 3.2±2.5kg CO2 eq. ha−1 a−1 for arable soils under organic management can be observed. Only one comparative study on rice paddies has been published up to date. All 19 retrieved studies were conducted in the Northern hemisphere under temperate climate. Abstract: Ammonia oxidizers, including ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) are important drivers of a key step of the nitrogen cycle — nitrification, which affects the production of the potent greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O). A field experiment was conducted to determine the effect of nitrogen application rates and the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) on the abundance of AOB and AOA and on N2O emissions in a grazed pasture soil. Nitrogen (N) was applied at four different rates, with urea applied at 50 and 100kgNha−1 and animal urine at 300 and 600kgNha−1. DCD was applied to some of the N treatments at 10kgha−1. The results showed that the AOB amoA gene copy numbers were greater than those of AOA. The highest ratio of the AOB to AOA amoA gene copy numbers was 106.6 which occurred in the urine-N 600 treatment. The AOB amoA gene copy numbers increased with increasing nitrogen application rates. DCD had a significant impact in reducing the AOB amoA gene copy numbers especially in the high nitrogen application rates. N2O emissions increased with the N application rates. DCD had the most significant effect in reducing the daily and total N2O emissions in the highest nitrogen application rate. The greatest reduction of total N2O emissions by DCD was 69% in the urine-N 600 treatment. The reduction in the N2O emission factor by DCD ranged from 58% to 83%. The N2O flux and NO3 −-N concentrations were significantly correlated to the growth of AOB, rather than AOA. This study confirms the importance of AOB in nitrification and the effect of DCD in inhibiting AOB growth and in decreasing N2O emissions in grazed pasture soils under field conditions. Abstract: Integration of a restricted grazing regime in winter with the use of a nitrification inhibitor can potentially reduce N2O emissions from grazed pasture systems. A three year field study was conducted to compare annual N2O emission rates from a “tight nitrogen” grazed farmlet with those from a control farmlet. The control farmlet was managed under a conventional rotational all-year grazing regime, while the “tight nitrogen” farmlet was under a similar grazing regime, except during winter and early spring seasons when cows grazed for about 6h per day. A nitrification inhibitor (dicyandiamide, DCD) was applied onto the “tight nitrogen” farmlet immediately after grazing through winter and early spring. A chamber technique was used to measure N2O emissions in several paddocks from each farmlet during three contrasting seasons each year. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) inventory methodology was used to estimate CH4 and indirect N2O emissions and the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was used to calculate CO2 emissions from the farm systems. The individual and combined effects of restricted grazing and DCD use on N2O emissions were also determined. During the late spring/summer and autumn periods, N2O emission rates were generally similar between the two farmlets. The use of a restricted grazing regime and DCD reduced N2O emissions from the grazed farmlet during the winter/early spring seasons by 43–55%, 64–79% and 45–60% over each of the three years, respectively. The use of restricted grazing and DCD both resulted in a similar reduction in N2O emissions, but there was no significant further reduction from the combination of these technologies. For the three study years, the annual N2O emission rate from the “tight nitrogen” farmlet was 20% lower, on average, than from the control. Abstract: National and regional C emissions from historical land use change (LUC) and fossil fuel use are proposed as a basis to ascribe ‘burden-sharing’ for global emission reduction targets. Changes in non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions as a result of LUC have not been considered, but may be considerable. We measured soil–atmosphere exchange of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in remnant forest, pasture and viticulture systems in four seasons, as well as differences in soil C density and the C density of remnant forest vegetation. This approach enabled comparative assessment of likely changes in ecosystem C density and soil non-CO2 greenhouse gas exchange along a LUC continuum since European settlement. Soil CH4 uptake was moderate in forest soil (−27μgCm−2 h−1), and significantly different to occasionally large CH4 emissions from viticulture and pasture soils. Soil N2O emissions were small and did not significantly differ. Soil C density increased significantly with conversion from forest (5kgm−2) to pasture (9kgm−2), and remained high in viticulture. However, there was a net decrease in ecosystem C density with forest conversion to pasture. Concurrently, net soil non-CO2 emissions (CH4 and N2O combined) increased with conversion from forest to pasture. Since European settlement 170years ago, it was estimated ~8114Gg CO2-e has been released from changes in ecosystem C density in the Mornington Peninsula, whereas ~383Gg CO2-e may have been released from changes in soil non-CO2 exchange processes. Principally, a switch from soil CH4 uptake to soil CH4 emission after forest clearing to agro-pastoral systems provided this further ~5% contribution to the historical landscape CO2-e source strength. Conserving and restoring remnant forests and establishing new tree-based systems will enhance landscape C density. Similarly, minimising anaerobic, wet conditions in pasture/viticulture soils will help reduce non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Vertisols and Alfisols during sweet sorghum cultivation in the Indian semi-arid tropics were determined using a closed chamber technique during the rainy season (June–October) of 2010. The study included two treatments, nitrogen (N) at a rate of 90kg/ha and a control without N fertilizer application. The N2O emissions strongly coincided with N fertilization and rainfall events. The cumulative N2O–N emission from Alfisols was 1.81N2O–Nkg/ha for 90 N treatment and 0.15 N2O–Nkg/ha for the 0 N treatment. Similarly, the N2O–N emission from Vertisols was 0.70 N2O–Nkg/ha for 90 N treatment and 0.09 N2O–Nkg/ha for the 0 N treatment. The mean N2O–N emission factor for fertilizer induced emissions from the Alfisols was 0.90% as compared to 0.32% for Vertisols. Our results suggest that the N2O emissions are dependent on the soil properties. Therefore, the monitoring of N2O emissions from different agro-ecological regions, having different soil types, rainfall characteristics, cropping systems and crop management practices are necessary to develop comprehensive and accurate green house gas inventories. Abstract: Freshwater lakes are known to release carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) to the atmosphere; however, the importance of lakes in global nitrous oxide (N2O) budgets is not yet known. Further, despite the abundance of small lakes on the landscape, neither emissions of these gases nor their drivers are well described. Dissolved concentrations of CO2, CH4 and N2O greenhouse gases were related to water chemistry, hydrology and catchment characteristics in order to identify factors controlling gas concentrations for 121 small Irish headwater lakes (median area: 2.0ha) in relatively undisturbed catchments; lake–atmosphere gas fluxes were also calculated. The majority of lakes were supersaturated (relative to the atmosphere) with CO2 and N2O while CH4 was above saturation in all lakes. Dissolved gas concentrations were correlated with land cover (rock, forest and grassland), deuterium excess (an indicator of hydrologic character) and lake organic carbon concentrations, although dissolved CO2 exhibited few significant relationships. Principal components analysis indicated that higher levels of CH4 and N2O supersaturation were exhibited under different conditions. Methane supersaturation was highest in low elevation catchments with an evaporative hydrologic character and high organic carbon concentrations. In contrast, lakes characteristic of N2O supersaturation were low in carbon and located in more rapidly flushed higher elevation catchments. Estimated fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O to the atmosphere averaged 14, 0.36 and 1.3×10−3 mmolm−2 d−1, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
