Abstract Coupled nitrogen and oxygen isotopes of nitrate have proven useful in identifying nitrate sources and transformation in rivers. However, isotopic fractionation and low-resolution monitoring limit the accurate estimation of nitrate dynamics. In the present study, the spatio-temporal variations of nitrate isotopes (15N and 18O) and hydrochemical compositions (NO 3 − and Cl−) of river water were examined to understand nitrate sources in the Xijiang River, China. High-frequency sampling campaigns and isotopic analysis were performed at the mouth of the Xijiang River to capture temporal nitrate variabilities. The overall values of δ15N-NO 3 − and δ18O-NO 3 − ranged from +4.4‰ to +14.1‰ and from −0.3‰ to +6.8‰, respectively. The results of nitrate isotopes indicated that NO 3 − mainly originated from soil organic nitrogen (SON), chemical fertilizer (CF), and manure and sewage wastes (M&S). The negative correlation of nitrate isotopic values with NO 3 −/Cl− ratios suggested the importance of denitrification in NO 3 − loss. The results of Bayesian model with incorporation of isotopic fractionation during the denitrification showed that SON and CF contributed to the most (72–73%) nitrate in the wet season; whereas approximately 58% of nitrate was derived from anthropogenic inputs (M&S and CF) in the dry season. The nitrate flux was 2.08 × 105 tons N yr−1 during one hydrologic year between 2013 and 2014, with 86% occurring in the wet season. Long-term fluctuations in nitrate flux indicated that nitrate export increased significantly over the past 35 years, and was significantly correlated with nitrate concentrations. The seasonal pattern of nitrate dynamics indicated the mixing of nitrified NO 3 − and denitrified NO 3 − between surface flow and groundwater flow under different hydrological conditions. Overall, the present study quantitatively evaluates the spatio-temporal variations in nitrate sources in a subtropical watershed, and the high-frequency monitoring gives a better estimate of nitrate exports and proportional contributions of nitrate sources. Abstract Rivers are important sites of both nitrogen removal and emission of nitrous oxide (N 2 O), a powerful greenhouse gas. Previous measurements have focused on nitrogen-rich temperate rivers, with cold, low-nitrogen river systems at high-altitude receiving less attention. Here, nitrogen removal rates were estimated by directly measuring dissolved N 2 and N 2 O of the Yellow River in its source region of the Tibetan Plateau, a frigid high-altitude environment. We measured the dissolved N 2 and N 2 O using N 2 :Ar ratio method and headspace equilibrium technique, respectively. Dissolved N 2 in the river water ranged from 337 to 513 μmol N 2 L−1, and dissolved N 2 O ranged from 10.4 to 15.4 nmol N 2 O L−1. Excess dissolved N 2 (△N 2) ranged from −8.6 to 10.5 μmol N 2 L−1, while excess dissolved N 2 O (△N 2 O) ranged from 2.1 to 8.3 nmol N 2 O L−1; they were relatively low compared with most other rivers in the world. However, N 2 removal fraction (△N 2 /DIN, average 21.6%) and EF 5r values (N 2 O − N/NO 3 − N, range 1.6 × 10−4–5.0 × 10−2) were comparable with many other rivers despite the high altitude for the Yellow River source region. Furthermore, the EF 5r values increased with altitude. Estimated fluxes of N 2 and N 2 O to the atmosphere from the river surface ranged from −67.5 to 93.5 mmol N m−2 d−1 and from 4.8 to 93.8 μmol N m−2 d−1, respectively, and the nitrogen removal from rivers was estimated to be 1.87 × 107 kg N yr−1 for the Yellow River source region. This is the first report of nitrogen removal for a frigid high-altitude river; the results suggest that N removal and N 2 O emission from cold high-altitude rivers should be considered in the global nitrogen budget. The riverine system is usually considered as a natural reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and more susceptible to anthropogenic activities. In this study, the occurrence and distribution of 14 antibiotics belonging to 7 categories together with 23 corresponding ARGs in Ba River of Xi'an China were investigated in March and July 2017. Sulfonamides, quinolones, macrolides and tetracyclines were detected in high frequencies ranged from 85.7% to 100%. Tetracyclines were detected with high concentrations in water samples (up to 8.54 × 10 2  ng L −1 ) and sediment samples (up to 2.08 × 10 3  μg kg −1 ), respectively. The total concentrations of antibiotics were much higher in July in comparison with March. The sul 1, tet A, tet C, tet Z, gyr A, erm F, cml A and bla TEM were the predominant ARGs in terms of absolute abundance. For both water and sediment samples in March compared with July, the relative abundance of ARGs had no significant difference except for sul 3. The tetracyclines had positive correlation with tet genes, whereas the remaining antibiotics had no significant correlations with their corresponding ARGs, suggesting that environmental factors and cross-selection may significantly influenced the distribution of ARGs. Redundancy analysis was performed to further predict the influences of environmental factors on antibiotics and ARG abundance. Understanding the mechanisms behind land–ocean sediment transport processes is crucial, due to the resulting impacts on the sustainable management of water and soil resources. This study investigated temporal trends and historical phases of sediment flux delivered to the sea by nine major rivers in China, while also quantifying the contribution of key anthropogenic and natural driving forces. During the past six decades, sediment flux from these nine major rivers exhibited a statistically significant negative trend, decreasing from 1.92 Gt yr −1 during 1954–1968 to 1.39 Gt yr −1 , 0.861 Gt yr −1 and 0.335 Gt yr −1 during 1969–1985, 1986–1999 and 2000–2016, respectively. We used a recently developed Sediment Identity approach and found that the sharp decrease in sediment load observed across China was mainly (~95%) caused by a reduction in sediment concentration. Reservoir construction exerted the strongest influence on land–ocean sediment fluxes, while soil conservation measures represented a secondary driver. Before 1999, soil erosion was not controlled effectively in China and reservoirs, especially large ones, played a dominant role in reducing riverine sediments. After 1999, soil erosion has gradually been brought under control across China, so that conservation measures directly accounted for ~40% of the observed decrease in riverine sediments. With intensifying human activities, it is predicted that the total sediment flux delivered to the sea by the nine major rivers will continue to decrease in the coming decades, although at a slower rate, resulting in severe challenges for the sustainable management of drainage basins and river deltas. In this study, the Li River and the middle-lower reaches of the Shaying River in the Shaying River basin were selected for an investigation on the effects of floodgates on macroinvertebrate communities; additionally, the relationships among floodgates, macroinvertebrate communities and river longitudinal connectivity were explored. The Li and Shaying rivers had similar ratios of molluscs and scrapers, but their species compositions were significantly different. The water level fluctuations in the Li River were based on natural hydrological characteristics, and these were very different from the fluctuations in the reaches of the Shaying River that were divided by a serious of floodgates. The effects of floodgates resulted in a reduction in the number of taxa, Shannon-Wiener index, Margalef index, and Fisher index and an increase in the Harrison index. The upper reaches of the Li and Saying rivers had similar macroinvertebrate communities, but these were very different from the lower reaches of the Saying River. The total number of species and the number of aquatic insect species increased with the river connectivity gradient and the variations in the α-diversity and β-diversity indices along reaches confirmed the hypothesis that the longitudinal connectivity of the Shaying River was significantly affected by floodgates. The results of Pearson and PLS tests showed that some plankton variables and physical water parameters could possibly describe how the gradient of river longitudinal connectivity was related to the floodgates in the Shaying River basin. The results of partial correlations showed, even when excluding the effects of water pollution, the protozoa richness and electrical conductivity still had significant influences on the distribution patterns of macroinvertebrate communities. When considering the results of correlation analyses and regression together, these same variables could be used to describe how the gradient of river longitudinal hydrological connectivity is related to floodgates in future studies. The concentrations and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urbanized river networks are strongly influenced by intensive land use, industrial activities and population density. The spatial variations and their influencing factors of 16 priority PAHs were investigated in surface water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments among areas under different intensive land uses (industrial areas, agricultural areas, inner city, suburban towns and island areas) in the Shanghai river network, East China. Source apportionment was carried out using isomer ratios of PAHs and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). Total concentrations of 16 PAHs ranged from 105.2 to 400.5 ng/L, 108.1 to 1058.8 ng/L and 104.4 to 19,480.0 ng/g in water, SPM and sediments, respectively. The concentrations of PAHs in SPM and sediments varied significantly among areas ( p  < 0.05), with the highest concentrations in inner city characterized by highly intensive land use and high population density. The PAH concentrations in sediments were positively correlated with those in SPM and were more strongly correlated with black carbon than with total organic carbon, indicating a stronger influence of prolonged anthropogenic contamination than the recent surface input in sediments. Biomass and coal combustion contributed strongly to total PAHs, followed by natural gas combustion in water and SPM, and vehicular emissions in sediments. Vehicular emissions were the strongest contributors in SPM and sediments of the inner city, indicating the strong influence of vehicular transportation to PAHs pollution in the urbanized river network. Urban rivers represent a unique ecosystem in which pollution occurs regularly, leading to significantly altered of chemical and biological characteristics of the surface water and sediments. However, the impact of urbanization on the diversity and structure of the river microbial community has not been well documented. As a major tributary of the Yangtze River, the Jialing River flows through many cities. Here, a comprehensive analysis of the spatial microbial distribution in the surface water and sediments in the Nanchong section of Jialing River and its two urban branches was conducted using 16S rRNA gene-based Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The results revealed distinct differences in surface water bacterial composition along the river with a differential distribution of Proteobacteria , Cyanobacteria , Actinobacteria , Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria ( P  < 0.05). The bacterial diversity in sediments was significantly higher than their corresponding water samples. Additionally, archaeal communities showed obvious spatial variability in the surface water. The construction of the hydropower station resulted in increased Cyanobacteria abundance in the upstream (32.2%) compared to its downstream (10.3%). Several taxonomic groups of potential fecal indicator bacteria, like Flavobacteria and Bacteroidia , showed an increasing trend in the urban water. PICRUSt metabolic inference analysis revealed a growing number of genes associated with xenobiotic metabolism and nitrogen metabolism in the urban water, indicating that urban discharges might act as the dominant selective force to alter the microbial communities. Redundancy analysis suggested that the microbial community structure was influenced by several environmental factors. TP ( P  < 0.01) and NO 3 − ( P  < 0.05), and metals (Zn, Fe) ( P  < 0.05) were the most significant drivers determining the microbial community composition in the urban river. These results highlight that river microbial communities exhibit spatial variation in urban areas due to the joint influence of chemical variables associated with sewage discharging and construction of hydropower stations. Shallow lakes are vulnerable to eutrophication because of abundant phytoplankton and significant nutrient input from sediments. Previous studies have researched the effect of environmental factors on phytoplankton and phosphorus release from sediment. However, few studies have simultaneously evaluated the interactive effects of environmental factors on phytoplankton communities and the interactions among different sediment nutrients. This paper reports on a 2016 investigation that examined the phytoplankton community and physical and chemical factors in both the water column and sediments in a Chinese shallow lake and its adjoining rivers. Our results indicated that rivers with water gates and lake areas had greater Chlorophyll a concentrations (Chl a ) than natural rivers with similar total phosphorus (TP) concentrations; this indicates the importance of residence time on phytoplankton biomass. Although temperature impacted Chl a less than nutrients, its effects were highly species-specific, modulating relationships between nutrients and the abundance of different phytoplankton taxa. The effects of nutrients changed based on phytoplankton biomass and community composition, suggesting that different phytoplankton taxa have different nutrient demands. We predict that increasing residence time, temperature, and nutrients will increase phytoplankton biomass and increase the future dominance of Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta . In the interstitial water, there were no significant seasonal differences in TP, total nitrogen, and soluble reactive silica concentrations. However, ammonia concentrations were higher in the spring and lower in other seasons; nitrate and sulfate were abundant when the ammonia concentration was low. The total iron level in sediments was significantly negatively related with TP at low ammonia and silica concentrations and at high nitrate and sulfate concentrations in the interstitial water. Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in the river system have received growing attention in recent years due to their potential threat to aquatic ecosystems and public health. Recognizing the occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in river environment and assessing their ecological risks are of important precondition for proposing effective strategies to protect basin safety. In this study, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to identify the contamination and risk characteristics of antibiotics in the aquatic environment of Hai River system (HRS) which is the largest water system in northern China. To attain this objective, several tools and methods were considered on the data set of water and sediment samples collected in the past ten years. The occurrence pattern, concentration levels and spatiotemporal distribution of antibiotics in the HRS were characterized utilizing statistical and comparative analysis. Risk quotients were employed to assess the adverse ecology effects caused by single antibiotic or their mixtures. Screening tool with priority factor and accumulation growth factor was used auxiliarily to prioritize antibiotics that should be of highly concern. Results indicated that the occurrence frequencies and concentration levels of 16 representative antibiotics in HRS were generally higher than those reported in global waters. Most antibiotics showed significant seasonal and spatial variations. Comparatively speaking, sulfamethoxazole, norfloxacin, erythromycin and roxithromycin posed higher risks to aquatic organisms in the HRS individually, and the combination of tetracycline and enrofloxacin indicated synergistical actions. Overall, due to their potential risks, considerable levels or quick increasing trends, 13 antibiotics were identified as priority contaminants in the HRS and should be paid special attention to be strictly regulated in the future. Ecology, hydrology, and natural resources in the source areas of the Yangtze and Yellow rivers (SAYYR) are closely linked to interactions between climate and permafrost. However, a comprehensive study of the interactions is currently hampered by sparsely- and unevenly-distributed monitoring sites and limited field investigations. In this study, the thermal regime of warm-dry permafrost in the SAYYR was systematically analyzed based on extensive data collected during 2010–2016 of air temperature ( T a ), ground surface temperature ( GST ) and ground temperature across a range of areas with contrasting land-surface characteristics. Mean annual T a ( MAAT ) and mean annual GST ( MAGST ) were regionally averaged at − 3.19 ± 0.71 °C and − 0.40 ± 1.26 °C. There is a close relationship between GST and T a ( R 2 = 0.8477) as obtained by a linear regression analysis with all available daily averages. The mean annual temperature at the bottom of the active layer ( T TOP ) was regionally averaged at − 0.72 ± 1.01 °C and mostly in the range of − 1.0°C and 0 °C except at Chalaping (~− 2.0 °C). Surface offset (MAGST–MAAT) was regionally averaged at 2.54 ± 0.71 °C. Thermal offset ( T TOP - MAGST ) was regionally averaged at − 0.17 ± 0.84 °C, which was generally within − 0.5 °C and 0.5 °C. Relatively consistent thermal conductivity between the thawed and frozen states of the soils may be responsible for the small thermal offset. Active layer thickness was generally smaller at Chalaping than that on other parts of the QTP, presumably due to smaller climatic continentality index and the thermal dampening of surface temperature variability under the presence of dense vegetation and thick peaty substrates. We conclude that the accurate mapping of permafrost on the rugged elevational QTP could be potentially obtained by correlating the parameters of GST , thermal offset, and temperature gradient in the shallow permafrost. A simple and effective method based on magnetic separation has been developed for the extraction of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from river water samples using magnetoliposomes as adsorbents. This method avoided the time-consuming column passing process of loading large volume samples in traditional SPE through the rapid isolation of magnetoliposomes with an adscititious magnet. Lipid bilayers formed on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 showed great adsorptive tendency towards analytes through hydrophobic interactions, and zwitterions headgroups endowed the outer surface of magnetoliposomes with hydrophilicity to improve the dispersing property of adsorbents in the sample matrix. The target analytes were detected by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and the limits of detection obtained are in the range of 0.04–0.35 ng L − 1 . The relative standard deviations of intra- and inter-day are in the range of 2–5% and 4–7%, respectively. The proposed method was employed for analysis of six OCPs in the surface water samples from two cities along the Songhua River in different seasons. Less is known about controls of sedimentary structures in groundwater As distributions in sedimentary aquifers, and quantitative description of relationship between sedimentary environment and high As groundwater (according to WHO, As > 10 μg/L) is a challenging issue. Three hundred and eighty-two hydrogeological borehole loggings (well depths of 50–300 m) were collected and four hundred and ninety nine groundwater samples were taken to investigate controls of paleochannels on groundwater arsenic distribution in shallow aquifers of alluvial plain in the Hetao Basin. Results showed that the swing zone, formed by bursting, diversion and swing of ancient Yellow River course since the Late Pleistocene, has an obviously corresponding relationship with spatial variability of groundwater As in the Hetao Basin. “Swing Intensity Index” ( S ), which is firstly defined as the sum of clay-sand ratio ( R ) and the number of clay layers ( N ), can be used as the sedimentary facies symbol to establish the new recognition method for hosting high As groundwater. There is a positive correlation between the swing intensity index ( S ) of paleochannels and groundwater As concentrations. The swing zones of paleochannels with high S values represent hydrogeochemical characteristics of the strong reducing environment, serious evaporation, strong cation exchange, and the low infiltration recharge of surface water, which lead to enrichment of groundwater As in the shallow aquifers. CO 2 fluxes across water-air interfaces of river systems play important roles in regulating the regional and global carbon cycle. However, great uncertainty remains as to the contribution of these inland water bodies to the global carbon budget. Part of the uncertainty stems from limited understanding of the CO 2 fluxes at diurnal and seasonal frequencies caused by aquatic metabolism. Here, we measured surface water characteristics (temperature, pH, and DO, DIC, Ca 2 + concentrations) and CO 2 fluxes across the air-water interface at two transects of Guijiang River, southwest China to assess the seasonal and diurnal dynamics of fluvial carbon cycling and its potential role in regional and global carbon budgets. The two transects had differing bedrock; DM transect is underlain by carbonate and detrital rock and PY is underlain by pure carbonate. Our results show that the river water both degasses CO 2 to and absorbs CO 2 from the atmosphere in both summer and winter, but the degassing and absorption varied between the two transects. Further, CO 2 fluxes evolve through diurnal cycles. At DM, the river evaded CO 2 from early morning through noon and absorbed CO 2 from afternoon through early morning. At PY in summer, the CO 2 evasion decreased during the daytime and increased at night while in winter at night, CO 2 uptake increased in the morning and decreased in the afternoon but remained relatively stable at night. Although the river is a net source of carbon to the atmosphere (~ 15 mM m − 2 day − 1 ), the evasion rate is the smallest of all reported world's inland water bodies reflecting sequestration of atmospheric carbon through the carbonate dissolution and high primary productivity. These results emphasize the need of seasonal and diurnal monitoring of CO 2 fluxes across water-air interface, particularly in highly productive rivers, to reduce uncertainty in current estimates of global riverine CO 2 emission. There are increasing concerns in nitrogen (N) pollution worldwide, especially in aquatic ecosystems, and thus quantifying its sources in waterways is critical for pollution prevention and control. In this study, we investigated the spatio-temporal variabilities of inorganic N concentration (i.e., NO 3 − , NH 4 + ) and total dissolved N (TDN) and identified their sources in waters and suspended matters using an isotopical approach in the Jinshui River, a river with a length of 87 km in the monsoon-climate region of China. The spatio-temporal inorganic N concentrations differed significantly along the longitudinal gradient in the river network. The NO 3 − , NH 4 + and TDN concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 1.12 mg l − 1 , 0.03 to 4.28 mg l − 1 , and 0.33 to 2.78 mg l − 1 , respectively. The 15 N tracing studies demonstrated that N in suspended organic matter was in the form of suspended particulate nitrogen (SPN) and was primarily from atmospheric deposition and agricultural fertilizer. In contrast, N in stream waters was mainly in the form of nitrate and was from atmospheric deposition, fertilizers, soil, and sewage. Meanwhile, both δ 15 N-SPN and δ 15 N-NO 3 − peaked in the rainy season (i.e., July) because of higher terrigenous sources via rain runoff, demonstrating the dominant diffusive N sources in the catchment. Occurrence of organohalogen contaminants (OCs) including 12 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), 7 polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs) and 7 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in the Han River, which is the largest tributary of the Yangtze River, and Danjiangkou Reservoir, the source of water for China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project. OCPs were found to be dominant in water, with concentrations of 0.14–11 and 2.9–59 ng L − 1 during winter and summer, respectively. In sediment, OCPs were also predominant contaminants during summer (5.0–1.7 × 10 2 ng g − 1 ), whereas during winter PCBs (4.3–2.3 × 10 2 ng g − 1 ) were dominant. Concentrations of OCs observed during this study were generally less or comparable to those from other locations in the world. Concentrations of OCPs were significantly greater in lower reaches of the Han River, during winter. This observation might be due to proximity of this location to more developed areas. Distributions of OCs between water and sediment were not at steady state except for PBDEs during winter. This disequilibrium is likely due to continuing inputs of pollutants. A tiered assessment of risks to aquatic organisms was conducted for OCs. Initially species sensitivity distributions (SSD) were employed to determine predicted no effect concentration (PNEC), followed by evaluation based on hazard quotients (HQ). In subsequent tiers, a probabilistic approach was used to develop joint probability distributions, where species sensitivity distributions were compared to distributions of measured concentrations of OCs. Consistent results were obtained by use of all methods, which suggested endosulfans and heptachlors could pose risk to local aquatic organisms. A total of 211 water samples were collected from 53 key sampling points from 5–10th July 2013 at four different depths (0 m, 2 m, 4 m, 8 m) and at different sites in the Huaihe River, Anhui, China. These points monitored for 18 parameters (water temperature, pH, TN, TP, TOC, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Cd, Mn, B, Fe, Al, Mg, and Ba). The spatial variability, contamination sources and health risk of trace elements as well as the river water quality were investigated. Our results were compared with national (CSEPA) and international (WHO, USEPA) drinking water guidelines, revealing that Zn, Cd and Pb were the dominant pollutants in the water body. Application of different multivariate statistical approaches, including correlation matrix and factor/principal component analysis (FA/PCA), to assess the origins of the elements in the Huaihe River, identified three source types that accounted for 79.31% of the total variance. Anthropogenic activities were considered to contribute much of the Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Co, and Mn via industrial waste, coal combustion, and vehicle exhaust; Ba, B, Cr and Cu were controlled by mixed anthropogenic and natural sources, and Mg, Fe and Al had natural origins from weathered rocks and crustal materials. Cluster analysis (CA) was used to classify the 53 sample points into three groups of water pollution, high pollution, moderate pollution, and low pollution, reflecting influences from tributaries, power plants and vehicle exhaust, and agricultural activities, respectively. The results of the water quality index (WQI) indicate that water in the Huaihe River is heavily polluted by trace elements, so approximately 96% of the water in the Huaihe River is unsuitable for drinking. A health risk assessment using the hazard quotient and index (HQ/HI) recommended by the USEPA suggests that Co, Cd and Pb in the river could cause non-carcinogenic harm to human health. The occurrence and distribution of five drugs of abuse and their metabolites, namely, methamphetamine (METH), amphetamine (AMP), ketamine (KET), ephedrine (EPH), and hydroxylimine (HY), were investigated in the surface water in urban rivers in Beijing, China. A total of 117 surface water samples were collected from the seven rivers in the Beijing urban areas during four different seasons. Laboratory analyses revealed that EPH and METH were the most predominant drugs, with detection frequency ranging from 94% to 100% and from 65% to 100%, respectively. High levels of METH and KET were observed in the center part of the urban areas, which was likely associated with the drug abuse and the entertainment activities. Seasonal variation of the drug occurrence showed that the highest concentration of drugs of abuse was found during winter, which was likely due to the high consumption, low temperature, and low water flows during the cold weather. By contrast, the concentration and detection frequency of AMP and HY were relatively low. Risk assessment by the risk quotient method indicated that the five drugs of abuse and their metabolites were not likely to exert biological effects on the aquatic ecosystems at current levels in the surface water. Abstract: Substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (SPAHs) occur ubiquitously in the whole global environment as a result of their persistence and widely-spread sources. Some SPAHs show higher toxicities and levels than the corresponding PAHs. Three types of most frequently existing SPAHs, oxygenated-PAHs (OPAHs), nitrated-PAHs (NPAHs), and methyl-PAHs (MPAHs), as well as the 16 priority PAHs were investigated in this study. The purpose was to identify the occurrence, possible transformation, and source and fate of these target compounds in a water shortage area of North China. We took a river system in the water-shortage area in China, the Haihe River System (HRS), as a typical case. The rivers are used for irrigating the farmland in the North of China, which probably introduce these pollutants to the farmland of this area. The MPAHs (0.02–0.40μg/L in dissolved phase; 0.32–16.54μg/g in particulate phase), OPAHs (0.06–0.19μg/L; 0.41–17.98μg/g), and PAHs (0.16–1.20μg/L; 1.56–79.38μg/g) were found in the water samples, but no NPAHs were detected. The concentrations of OPAHs were higher than that of the corresponding PAHs. Seasonal comparison results indicated that the OPAHs, such as anthraquinone and 2-methylanthraquinone, were possibly transformed from the PAHs, particularly at higher temperature. Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent was deemed to be the major source for the MPAHs (contributing 62.3% and 87.6% to the receiving river in the two seasons), PAHs (68.5% and 89.4%), and especially OPAHs (80.3% and 93.2%) in the rivers. Additionally, the majority of MPAHs (12.4kg, 80.0% of the total input), OPAHs (16.2kg, 83.5%), and PAHs (65.9kg, 93.3%) in the studied months entered the farmland through irrigation. Abstract: The demand for numerical models to simulate and predict the transport and fate of organic pollutants in the environment is a reflection of certain restrictions of experimental research. Various phenolic pollutants have been detected at different concentration levels in the Songhua River, China. A multimedia fate model is coupled with the kinematic wave transport equations to accurately and simply characterize dynamic water flow, velocity and depth. The resulting model is applied to describe the temporal and spatial behavior of eight phenol compounds in the Songhua River. The predictive power of this model is evaluated by statistical tests using field observations during different hydrological seasons of the year 2007. The goodness-of-fit of model prediction for phenolic contaminants is, in general, agreeable. For one focal compound, the pathways and mass fluxes from the river system to the surrounding environment are also evaluated. Uncertainty analysis is performed by Monte Carlo stimulation to judge the influence of variability of input parameters on modeled results. The results indicate that the model has the ability to provide decision makers with valuable reference data for consideration of water pollution controls. Model simulation indicates that phenolic pollution in the river during the low-flow period of 2009 is remarkably reduced when compared to the same period of 2007. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In recent years, water quality degradation associated with rapid socio-economic development in the Taihu Lake Basin, China, has attracted increasing attention from both the public and the Chinese government. The primary sources of pollution in Taihu Lake are its inflow rivers and their tributaries. Effective water quality improvement programs need to be implemented in these rivers to improve the water quality of Taihu Lake, and to ensure sustainable development in the region. To ensure effectiveness and efficiency, it is important that the optimal water quality improvement program for a specific situation be selected. The aim of this study was to facilitate the selection of this optimal program. The QUAL2K model for river and stream water quality was used to simulate the effects of a range of water quality improvement scenarios in the Hongqi River, which is a polluted tributary in the Taihu Lake Basin. These scenarios consisted of a series of three water treatment technologies in different configurations, from upstream to downstream. The results showed that the optimal scenario comprised a bio-contact oxidation system upstream, followed by an ecological floating bed, and a vertical moveable eco-bed downstream. The reduction rates achieved by this scenario for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia nitrogen (NH3–N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were 49.50%, 32.81%, 35.94%, and 45.27%, respectively. The QUAL2K model proved to be an effective tool in the comparative evaluation of potential water quality improvement programs. Abstract: We analyzed the past and future trends in river export of dissolved and particulate nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and carbon (C) to the coastal waters of China, for sixteen rivers, as calculated by the Global NEWS models (Nutrient Export from WaterSheds). Between 1970 and 2000, the dissolved N and P export increased significantly, while export of other nutrients changed less. We analyzed the future trends (2000–2050) for the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA) scenarios. In general, the largest increases of dissolved nutrients export are projected for the Global Orchestration scenario, assuming a globalized world and a reactive approach toward environmental management. Future trends in river export of nutrients vary largely among basins, nutrient forms and scenarios. We calculate both increasing and decreasing trends between 2000 and 2050. We also identify the sources contributing to the nutrient export. For selected river basins we present results for alternative scenarios, which are based on the Global Orchestration scenario, but assume more environmental management. Abstract: Presently, the fluvial fluxes of Dissolved silicate (DSi) by many famous rivers in the world have been reported significantly decreased in the past several decades. DSi retention by river damming hence becomes a great concern. In this study, the impact on DSi retention and transport by cascade reservoirs in the Karst area were investigated. Based on the monitoring data for four seasons, budget of DSi in these reservoirs were calculated. Results showed that, only the downstream eutrophic Wujiangdu reservoir (WJD) was the sink for DSi, with a value of ca. 3.5kT DSi trapped annually. The new Hongjiadu reservoir (HJD) in the headwater area revealed to be an important source for DSi. Both Dongfeng (DF) and Suofengyin (SFY) reservoirs also released more DSi to the downstream than entering them. The great discrepancy of DSi source and sink effects among these reservoirs indicates that, (i) DSi was obviously taken up in summer and spring, and the concentration of DSi could be dropped down to below 30μΜ; (ii) during the period of thermal stratification, the concentration stratification of DSi is also developed along the water column. Possibly DSi releasing from inundation soil and bottom sediment was the important compensation for the silicon depletion in the epilimnion. In the newly constructed reservoirs (e.g. HJD and SFY), the releasing flux of DSi can significantly exceed the assimilating flux by diatom; and (iii) due to the hypolimnion introducing for hydropower operation, water leaving the dam generally had high DSi content, and then masked the DSi taking up in the epilimnion. This process also decreased the ratio of DIN to DSi, mitigating the silicon limiting situation in the downstream. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Tibetan Plateau covers an area of about one fourth of Europe, has an average elevation over 4000m above sea level, and is the water sources for about 40% of world''s population. In order to foresee future changes in water quality, it is important to understand what pressures are governing the spatial variation in water chemistry. In this paper the chemistry including major ions and trace elements in the headwaters of four major Asian rivers (i.e. the Salween, Mekong, Yangtze River and Yarlung Tsangpo) in the Tibetan Plateau was studied. The results showed that the content of dissolved salts in these Tibetan rivers was relatively high compared to waters from other parts of the world. The chemical composition of the four rivers were rather similar, with Ca2+ and HCO3 − being the dominating ions. The exception was the Yangtze River on the Plateau, which was enriched in Na+, Cl−, SO4 2− and Li due to silicate weathering followed by strong evaporation caused by a negative water balance, dissolution of evaporites in the catchment and some drainage from saline lakes. The concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Co, Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb, and Hg) and As, NH4 + were generally low in all the rivers. Anthropogenic impacts on the quality of the rivers were identified at a few locations in the Mekong River and Yarlung Tsangpo basins. Generally, the main spatial variation in chemical compositions of these under studied rivers was found to be governed mainly by difference in geological variation and regional climatic-environment. Climate change is, therefore, one of main determining factors on the water chemical characteristics of these headwaters of Asian major rivers in the Tibetan Plateau. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We applied cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) with multivariate linear regression (MLR) to apportion sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments of the Huangpu River in Shanghai, China, based on the measured PAH concentrations of 32 samples collected at eight sites in four seasons in 2006. The results indicate that petrogenic and pyrogenic sources are the important sources of PAHs. Further analysis shows that the contributions of coal combustion, traffic-related pollution and spills of oil products (petrogenic) are 40%, 36% and 24% using PCA/MLR, respectively. Pyrogenic sources (coal combustion and traffic related pollution) contribute 76% of anthropogenic PAHs to sediments, which indicates that energy consumption is a predominant factor of PAH pollution in Shanghai. Rainfall, the monsoon and temperature play important roles in the distinct seasonal variation of PAH pollution, such that the contamination level of PAHs in spring is significantly higher than in the other seasons. Major ion chemistry and dissolved inorganic carbon system (DIC, mainly HCO3 − and gaseous CO2) in the Luodingjiang River, a mountainous tributary of the Zhujiang (Pearl River), China, were examined based on a seasonal and spatial sampling scheme in 2005. The diverse distribution of lithology and anthropogenic impacts in the river basin provided the basic idea to assess the effects of lithology vs. human activities on water chemistry and carbon biogeochemistry in river systems. Major ions showed great spatial variations, with higher concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) and DIC in the regions with carbonate rocks and clastic sedimentary rocks, while lower in the regions with metamorphic sandstones and schists as well as granites. pCO2 at all sampling sites was oversaturated in June, ranging with a factor from 1.6 to 18.8 of the atmospheric concentration, reflecting the enhanced contribution from baseflow and interflow influx as well as in situ oxidation of organic matter. However, in April and December, undersaturated pCO2 was found in some shallow, clean rivers in the upstream regions. δ 13C of DIC has a narrow range from −9.07 to −13.59‰, which was more depleted in the regions with metamorphic rocks and granites than in the carbonate regions. Seasonally, it was slightly more depleted in the dry season (December) than in the wet season (June). The results suggested that lithological variability had a dominant control on spatial variations of water chemistry and carbon geochemistry in river systems. Besides, anthropogenic activities, such as agricultural and urban activities and in-stream damming, as well as river physical properties, such as water depth and transparency, also indicated their impacts. This study aims to investigate the state of the riverine organic carbon in the Luodingjiang River under human impacts, such as reforestation, construction of reservoirs and in-stream damming. Seasonal and spatial characteristics of total suspended sediment (TSS), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC), as well as C/N ratios and the stable carbon isotopic signatures of POC (δ 13CPOC) were examined based on a one-year study (2005) in the basin-wide scale. More frequent sampling was conducted in the outlet of the river basin at Guanliang hydrological station. DOC and POC concentrations showed flush effects with increasing water discharge and sediment load in the basin-wide scale. Atomic C/N ratio of POC had a positive relationship with TSS in the outlet of the basin, indicating the reduced aquatic sources and enhanced terrestrial sources during the high flood season. However, the similar relationship was not observed in the basin-wide scale mainly due to the spatial distributions of soil organic carbon and TSS. δ 13CPOC showed obvious seasonal variations with enriched values in the period with high TSS concentration, reflecting the increased contribution from C4 plants with enhanced soil erosion. The specific flux of the total organic carbon (2.30 t km− 2 year−1) was smaller than the global average level. The ratio of DOC to POC was 1.17, which is higher than most rivers under Asian monsoon climate regime. The organic carbon flux was estimated to decline with decreasing sediment load as a result of reforestation, reservoir construction and in-stream damming, which demonstrates the impacts of human disturbances on the global carbon cycle. Abstract: The Dongjiang River is the major source of drinking water supply for Hong Kong. The deterioration of the water quality of the Dongjiang River and excessive trihalomethanes (THMs) in the tap water of some districts in Hong Kong have become causes for public concern. The main objective of the present study is to investigate and model THM formation due to the chlorination of the Dongjiang River water under different chlorination conditions. The results showed that the total THM formation ranged between 11.7 and 91.8 mg L−1 and that control of the levels was primarily due to the reaction time and the Br− level in the water. Bromide concentration was a key factor in determining bromine-containing THM formation and consequently the speciation of THMs. Higher concentrations of bromide shifted THM species to more-bromine-containing ones, while the kinetics reflected the competing halogenation reactions. As the two mixed-halogen THMs had high cancer potency, the cancer risk of total THMs appeared to reach a peak at a bromide concentration ranging between 218 and 262 mg L−1 (with a bromide to dissolved organic carbon molar ratio (Br−/DOC) ranging between 15 and 18 mM/mM).
