The article reports that in November 1846, the Donner party--a wagon train of 81 settlers headed west across the Sierra Nevada, California--became hopelessly snowbound. Recently, archaeologists have discovered the exact location, near Alder Creek 11 kilometers away from a lake, where 22 settlers hunkered down. The team, which described its findings at a symposium held by the Society for Historical Archaeology in Sacramento, California, found no human burials or signs of cannibalism such as cooked human bones.
