A new model based on continuum damage mechanics is proposed to predict the fatigue life of 2.5D woven composites. First, a full-cell model reflecting the real microstructure of 2.5D woven composites is established in ANSYS. Subsequently, three independent damage variables are defined in the framework of the composite micromechanics to establish the component constitutive relations associated with damage. The strain energy density release rate and damage evolution equations for the matrix, fiber in yarns, and matrix in yarns are derived. Finally, the proposed model is implemented for fatigue life prediction and damage evolution analysis of 2.5D woven composites at 20 and 180°C. The results show that the numerical results are in good agreement with the relevant experimental results.

Superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) as an advanced smart material has been used to improve the impact performance of fiber-reinforced composites in recent decades. Due to the low impact toughness of the thin composite face-sheet and the poor strength of the foam core, sandwich panels are sensitive to the transverse loading. SMA fibers were embedded into the composite laminated to improve the impact resistance of the traditional foam core sandwich panel in this work. Five new types of SMA hybrid panels were prepared, and the testing panels with penetration failure were observed at the impact energy of 50 J. The impact mechanical responses and the damage morphology were analyzed, and the impact failure mechanism was also revealed. Results show that all sandwich panels were failed, the fiber breakage occurred at the impact region in the traditional panels, while part plies of the rear face-sheets split-off in the SMA hybrid panels. The impact performance of the SMA hybrid panels is improved when compared with the traditional panel, the reduction of the delamination area by 48.15% and the increase of the load-bearing threshold by 32.75% are acquired for the hybrid sandwich panel with two layers of SMA fibers in the rear face-sheet.

Nano-sized lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6)@ titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles with a core–shell structure has been successfully synthesized via a simple sol–gel method. LaB6@TiO2 particles were used as filler in polyvinyl butyral (PVB) matrix and performance of the TiO2 shell was evaluated. The core–shell nanoparticles were characterized for morphology and structure properties. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope testing results confirm the formation of LaB6–TiO2 core–shell structure. In composite film, LaB6 improved the thermo-decomposing temperature of PVB matrix from 369.2 to 372.8°C, while the same amount of LaB6@TiO2 further increased the temperature to 381.0°C. In addition, TiO2 shell redshifted the maximum transmittance of the film from 605 to 669 nm in the visible region. In the near infrared region, its absorption peak shifted from 1,466 to 1,476 nm. This result will be helpful for the development of transparent and thermal insulating materials.

To study the influence of different mixing times on the performance of concrete under vibration mixing and conventional mixing, C40 and C60 are selected in this paper to verify the influence of mixing time of 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 s on the compressive strength and durability of concrete comparing vibration mixing and common forced mixing. The results show that the early strength of concrete is more significantly improved in 3 and 7 day; the strength with vibration mixing for mixing 105 s in each age is higher than that of conventional mixing at 120 s; under the condition of guaranteed strength, the mixing time of at least 15 s can be reduced. The strength of C40 concrete with vibration mixing has a peak value with the corresponding mixing time of 105 s, and the rapid growth stage of compressive strength is 15 s earlier than that of conventional mixing. For all mixing time, the electric flux of vibrated concrete is significantly smaller than that of forced concrete, and the change rate is generally above 10%; compared with conventional mixing for 120 s, the durability of C40 and C60 concrete increases by 11.8 and 11.1%, respectively, at the time of vibration mixing for 105 s. It was found that under the same mixing time, the compressive strength of concrete with vibration mixing method is higher than that of conventional mixing. In a certain range, the durability of concrete can be improved by prolonging the mixing time.

In order to prepare polyurethane–polysiloxane block copolymers, α,ω-hydroxyalkyl polysiloxanes with methacrylate side chain and α,ω-bis(2-methyl-3-hydroxypropyl)polymethyl(2-methyl-methylpropanoate) siloxanes, were synthesized and characterized in this study. The syntheses process included hydroxyl protection, hydrosilylation, deprotection, and ring-opening equilibrium reactions. The intermediates and target products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance methods. The characterization results showed that each step was successfully carried out in all the cases. Then the waterborne polyurethane–polysiloxane block copolymers were prepared via step-growth polymerization. The properties of the block copolymer films were characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic thermomechanical analysis methods in detail. The experimental results showed that the block introduction of hydroxyalkyl polysiloxane could reduce the water absorption of waterborne polyurethane from 62 to 11%, and significantly improve the water resistance of polyurethane. With the introduction of polysiloxane, the tensile strength decreased and the elongation at break increased. At the same time, with the increase of the polysiloxane content, the glass transition temperature of the soft segment decreased to −56.4°C and the thermal decomposition temperature increased to 300°C. The results revealed that the introduction of polysiloxane could effectively improve the comprehensive performance of polyurethane–polysiloxane block copolymer films.

The cylindrical filament wound composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) with metal liner has been widely used in spaceflight due to their high strength and low weight. After the autofrettage process, the plastic deformation of the metal liner is constrained by composite winding layers, which introduce depressions to the metal liner that causes local buckling. To predict the local buckling of the inner liner with depressions of the pressure vessel after the autofrettage process, a local buckling analysis method for the metal liner of COPV was developed in this article. The finite element method is used to calculate the overall stress distribution in the pressure vessel before and after the autofrettage process, and the influence of local depressions on the buckling is evaluated. The axial buckling of the pressure vessel under external pressure is analyzed. The control equation of the metal liner with depressions is developed, considering the changes in the pressure and the bending moment of the liner depressions and its vicinity during the loading and unloading process. Taking the cylindrical COPV (38 L) with aluminum alloy liner as an example, the effects of liner thickness, liner radius, the thickness-to-diameter ratio, autofrettage pressure, and the length of straight section on the autofrettage process are discussed. The results show that the thickness of the inner liner has the most significant influence on the buckling of the liner, followed by the length of the straight section and the radius of the inner liner, while the autofrettage pressure has the least influence.

Hybrid fiber composites are widely used to improve the anti-penetration performance. Carbon/Kevlar hybrid composites are used in aircrafts and safety devices, thanks to the strong toughness of Kevlar fibers and high strength of carbon fibers. In the present work, the contact force of hybrid composites under oblique impact is derived. The viscoelastic constitutive model of Kevlar layer is investigated and the dissipation energies of composites for different high velocity oblique impacts are simulated. The results show that hybrid composites have good bullet-proof performance, the contact forces are fluctuant in short time and the frictional dissipation energy allows us to prevent penetration.

Concrete with the addition of polypropylene fibres is more cohesive and has better adhesion, deformability and tightness because the fibres “bind” the concrete matrix together and prevent large pores from forming in the concrete mix and limit the formation and spread of shrinkage cracks. Therefore, it can be assumed that polypropylene fibres affect the effectiveness of the concrete cover as a layer protecting steel bars against corrosion. This article presents the results of tests allowing us to estimate the effect of addition of polypropylene fibres on the reduction of reinforcing bars corrosion in concrete caused by the action of chlorides. Evaluation of the degree of corrosion of the reinforcement was analysed using the electrochemical polarisation galvanostatic pulse technique. The use of such a method allowed for the quantitative estimation of the effect of the addition of polypropylene fibre on the reduction of corrosion activity of the reinforcement in concrete.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the water pressure effects on hydraulic fracture behavior of concrete with wedge-splitting testing under dynamic loading. Five waterproof strain gauges are stuck along the crack path to observe the fracture process during the experiments. Four silicon water pressure sensors successfully measured the water pressure value on concrete face. The results show that the water pressure on crack faces accelerates the crack propagation of the concrete. The critical values of the splitting force decrease 26.7 and 25.6%, respectively, with the external applied water pressure of 0.2 and 0.4 MPa. Moreover, the hydraulic crack propagation speed increases at the beginning and tends to reach a peak value finally. The peak value of cracking speed is 11.08 m/s, which is high. Under dynamic loading, the water fails to fill the crack and only the trapped water interacts with the crack face. The water pressure is mainly a parabolic curve distribution along the crack path and the peak value decreases with the increase in the crack length.

In this study, a kind of structural gradient metal hollow spheres composites (SG-MHSCs) were fabricated using two kinds of 316L stainless steel hollow spheres with different diameters and A356 aluminum through the casting method. Then the density of the SG-MHSCs was measured by the direct measurement; the microstructure of the SG-MHSCs was characterized by the Scanning Electron Microscope. Meanwhile, the acoustic performance of MHSCs was tested by the impedance tube, and the sound absorption and insulation mechanism SG-MHSCs were discussed and analyzed.

Nano-Al2O3 dispersion-strengthened Cu20W composite was fabricated by vacuum hot-pressing sintering process. The electrical conductivity, relative density, and Brinell hardness were tested, respectively. The gleeble-1500D thermomechanical simulator was used to conduct isothermal compression with strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 10 s−1 and the temperatures ranging from 650 to 950°C. The microstructure of the Cu–Al2O3/20W composite was observed using an optical microscope and a transmission electron microscope, and the true stress–strain curves were analyzed. In addition, the influence of the nano-Al2O3 and tungsten on the thermal deformation process of the composite was analyzed. The relationship and interaction among work hardening, dynamic recovery, and dynamic recrystallization were illustrated. The results show that nano-Al2O3 particles pin dislocations and inhibit dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization. Consequently, the Cu–Al2O3/20W composite has typical dynamic recovery characteristics. Hence, the Cu–Al2O3/20W composite possesses outstanding high-temperature performance. The optimal processing domain of the Cu–Al2O3/20W composite ranged from 760 to 950°C with strain rates ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 s−1. Furthermore, the constitutive equation of the Cu–Al2O3/20W composite is established, and the activation energy is 155.069 kJ mol−1.

To meet the high-precision needs of conductive ink in the field of microelectronic circuit printing, nano silver-coated graphene oxide (GO) composites were prepared as the conductive functional unit of the composites. The results show that compatibility of the GO grafted with ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether is better in the organic matrix than in the inorganic solvents. The nano silver particles attached to the surface of the grafted GO are evenly distributed and uniform in size. Moreover, the conductivity of grafted GO coated with silver particle composites is effectively improved. The composite conductivity is higher than 108 S/m, which is close to the electrical conductivity of silver.

The most significant difference between recycled and natural concretes lies in aggregates. The performance of recycled coarse aggregates directly affects the characteristics of recycled concrete. Therefore, an in-depth study of aggregate characteristics is of great significance for improving the quality of recycled concrete. Based on the coarse aggregate content, maximum aggregate size, and aggregate shape, this study uses experiments, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation to reveal the impact of aggregate characteristics on the mechanical properties of recycled concrete. In this study, we selected the coarse aggregate content, maximum aggregate size, and the aggregate shape as design variables to establish the regression equations of the peak stress and elastic modulus of recycled concrete using the response surface methodology. The results showed that the peak stress and elastic modulus of recycled concrete reach the best when the coarse aggregate content is 45%, the maximum coarse aggregate size is 16 mm, and the regular round coarse aggregates occupy 75%. Such results provide a theoretical basis for the resource utilization and engineering design of recycled aggregates.

To study the influence of basalt fibers on the viscoelastic mechanical properties of asphalt concrete (AC) mixtures, unconfined compressive dynamic modulus tests were performed on styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS)-modified AC mixtures reinforced with various contents of basalt fibers ranging from 0.2 to 0.5% by weight at five temperatures and six load frequencies, and the dynamic moduli and phase angles of the mixtures were measured. Compared with the test results of the control mixture (with no basalt fibers), the data show that the high-temperature dynamic modulus of the mixtures initially increases and subsequently decreases with increasing fiber content and reaches its maximum value when the basalt fiber content is 0.3%, while the low-temperature dynamic modulus decreases monotonically with increasing fiber content. Furthermore, the phase angle of the mixtures initially decreases and later increases with increasing fiber content and reaches its minimum value when the basalt fiber content is 0.3%. These behaviors indicate that the addition of basalt fiber improves the high-temperature rutting resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance of the SBS-modified AC mixtures. In addition, the results of the wheel rut test exhibit a good correlation with the results of the dynamic modulus test, revealing the reliability of the dynamic modulus test for evaluating the high-temperature rutting resistance of basalt-fiber-reinforced AC mixtures.

In this article, we proposed a novel but simple multilayer resin film infusion-compressive molding (MLRFI-CM) manufacturing process that can harness the resin shear flow to architect hierarchical carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites with tunable 1D nanocarbons orientation. Via this novel process, we demonstrated that the orientation of two typical 1D nanocarbons, namely, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs), can be successfully tuned via altering the infusion time and that the tuning strategy is especially effective toward CNTs. Further, the structure-performance relationships between the electrical conductivity/interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and filler through-thickness orientation of the hierarchical CFRP composites is explored and compared. In the best case, with only 0.3 wt% of CNTs, the ILSS of CFRP composites revealed an increase of 19.7%, and the through-thickness conductivity demonstrated an increase of 38%.

In the numerical simulation of the macroscopic flow of the concrete, it can optimize the performance indicators of the screw conveyor and improve the uniformity of the material to be discharged in the batch production. The discrete element method is effective. The accuracy of physical parameters of this method is a key issue for the reliability of the simulation results of concrete. In this study, we measured the parameters describing the interaction between gravel, mortar, as well as between these two materials and the wall (steel). The experimentally determined parameters include the particle density, size, shape, coefficient of restitution, coefficients of static, and rolling friction. The cohesion coefficient of mortar particles for batch time was obtained by comparing the spread diameter and flow time in V-funnel experiments and simulation. After these calibration steps, the DEM parameters were validated by comparison of the mass flow rate and driving power by the batch production of screw conveying in simulations and experiments. The calculated results are proved to be close to the experimental data, which demonstrates that the measured DEM parameters are of sufficient accuracy to be used in the simulation of concrete flow performance (mass flow rate, energy consumption) in the screw conveyors.

A plate used in a medium voltage switch, made by a 25 wt% glass fiber-reinforced polyamide 66 composite filled with flame-retardant red phosphorus (RP) (PA66-GF25 FR (RP)), was injection molded. To satisfy the relatively high dimensional accuracy requirement, a “supporting mold” was used to compensate for the difference between the transverse and longitudinal linear shrinkage of the PA66-GF25 FR (RP). To reduce the internal residual stress caused by the “supporting mold,” hygrothermal conditioning treatments, including boiling water bath at 90–100°C and re-drying at 110°C, were used. To determine the effects of boiling water bath and re-drying on the dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties of the product, three treatment routes were applied. It was found that the route in which the boiling water bath is applied after the “supporting mold” is preferred to ensure the dimensional accuracies and the mechanical properties as a whole. Using a boiling water bath as a hygrothermal conditioning treatment can improve the mechanical properties and increase the dimensional accuracy of the product. In addition, by using the preferred route, re-drying can further improve the tensile, bending, and even impact strength.

Geological conditions play a decisive role in the stability of arch dam engineering, and the asymmetric geological conditions of the abutment have a very negative impact on the safety of the arch dam. This article takes Lizhou arch dam as the research object, and determines that the arch dam is preliminarily affected by the geological asymmetric characteristics. Through the geomechanical model test method, the overload failure test of the Lizhou arch dam was carried out, and the resistance body, the instability deformation of the structural plane of the two dam abutments, and the influence of each structural plane on the dam body are obtained, and the safety factor is determined. According to the test results under the condition of asymmetric foundation of arch dam, for the structural plane which affects the geological asymmetry of the arch dam, the corresponding reinforcement measures are carried out. The feasibility of the reinforcement scheme is verified by the finite element method, and the safety factor after reinforcement is obtained. According to the results, it is suggested that some engineering measures can be taken to reduce the geological asymmetry between the two banks and ensure the safe and stable operation of the arch dam in the future.

Composite structures (SiC/UHMWPE/TC4; SiC/TC4/UHMWPE) were designed using silicon carbide (SiC)ceramics, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) laminate, and titanium alloys (TC4s). Penetration experiments and numerical simulations were carried out to study the anti-penetration mechanism and energy characteristics of the composite structures, and the microstructure of the TC4 was analyzed. The results show that the two composite structures designed have advantages in reducing mass and thickness. The energy proportion of the TC4 is the largest among the three materials, which mainly determines the anti-penetration performance. The microstructure of the TC4 in composite structure I shows rough edges of bullet holes, a large number of adiabatic shear bands (ASBs), ASB bends and bifurcates, and many cracks, which lead to spalling damage of the TC4. The microstructure of the TC4 in composite structure II shows flat edges of bullet holes, several straight ASBs, and no cracks, which leads to brittle fragmentation. The initiation, expansion, combination of ASBs and cracks lead to more energy consumption. Therefore, the combination form of composite structure I can give full play the energy dissipation mechanism of the TC4 and has better anti-penetration performance than composite structure II.

With the popularity of stereo printing technology, 3D printers are widely used in industry, manufacturing, medicine, and other industries to quickly manufacture small devices. Before 3D printing, it is necessary to plan the printing path. Unreasonable printing path will not only increase the time consumption of printing products, but also cause printing failure due to the accumulation of stress and deformation in the printing process. In order to overcome the superimposed stress and deformation in the process of printing thin-walled complex devices, this article introduces the idea of balanced stress based on the basic damage of the path planning based on the potential field method. In the printing process, the ring path, island path and cross path are added to overcome the stress deformation phenomenon and improve the printing quality. Finally, the 3D printer is used to manufacture thin-walled complex devices, and the feasibility of the balanced potential field method is verified by physical comparison.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced composites with layer stacking structures are sensitive to delamination crack. To improve the interlaminar properties and further explore the capability of in situ damage monitoring of the laminate, CCF300 and CCF800 carbon fiber pins were selected to fabricate the z-pinned composites. Compared with the control sample, the G IC values of CCF300 and CCF800 z-pinned composites are increased by 398 and 378%, respectively. This indicates that the delamination resistance improvement of the laminates is dominated by the z-pin debonding and pull-outs. The electrical resistance of the laminates was utilized to in situ monitor the crack propagation within the composite laminate. The results show that the presence of the z-pins enhances the sensitivity of damage detection. The ΔR/R 0 of CCF800 z-pinned composite is nearly three times that of the control sample at the moment the crack length reaches 110 mm. Crack length–displacement curves were obtained according to the relationship between ΔR and Δa, which clearly displayed the steady or stick-slip crack growth of the laminates with or without z-pins, respectively. Visualization of the crack growth process can provide a novel method for the delamination failure analysis of the composite.

In this article, the ultrasensitive analysis of single-walled boron nitride nanotubes (SW-BNNTs) with an extra attached mass is studied by employing atomistic analysis technique. Numerical examples are carried out for vibration characteristic of SW-BNNT with an extra attached mass. Our results show that the vibration frequencies and magnitudes of SW-BNNT are very sensitive to the extra attached mass. In addition, the influence of length and chirality of SW-BNNT on the vibration frequencies and magnitudes of SW-BNNT with an extra attached mass are also examined in detail. This investigation indicates that SW-BNNTs have a great potential in the field of sensor technology.

In this article, mode II fracture toughness (GIIc{G}_{\text{IIc}}) of unidirectional E-glass/vinyl ester composites subjected to sulfuric acid aging is studied at two different temperatures (25 and 90°C). Specimens were manufactured using the hand lay-up method with the [0]20{{[}0]}_{20} stacking sequence. To study the effects of environmental conditions, samples were exposed to 30 wt% sulfuric acid at room temperature (25°C) for 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Some samples were also placed in the same solution but at 90°C and for 3, 6, 9, and 12 days to determine the interlaminar fracture toughness at different aging conditions. Fracture tests were conducted using end notched flexure (ENF) specimens according to ASTM D7905. The results obtained at 25°C showed that mode II fracture toughness increases for the first 2 weeks of aging and then it decreases for the last 8 weeks. It was also found that the flexural modulus changes with the same trend. Based on the results of the specimens aged at 90°C, a sharp drop in fracture toughness and flexural modulus with a significant decrease in maximum load have been observed due to the aging. Finite element simulations were performed using the cohesive zone model (CZM) to predict the global response of the tested beams.

This paper presents a new approach to strengthen reinforced concrete structures using natural fiber composites. Natural fibers are often used in civil engineering for thermal or acoustic insulation, but rarely are they employed to strengthen structures. Natural fiber composites are constituted of a matrix based on epoxy adhesive and aligned continuous fiber reinforcements. In this study, we investigate several fibers (carbon, hemp, fiberglass, and linen) in tensile and bending tests. The bending results show twice the magnification of the ultimate bending load in a strengthened specimen. The study also evaluates the stress distribution in the structure. In the case of a beam strengthened by a bonded carbon plate, the functioning of an assembly single lap and the optimal anchor length was determined by analogy. The analytical study describes the shear and peel stresses in the adhesive, composite, and concrete joints, revealing the optimum values of shear stress near the ends of the adhesive joint. The same was observed in concrete. The tests showed the influence of strengthening on the ultimate load and stiffness as well as the concentration of shear stresses at the ends of the adhesive joint.

The purpose of this study was to solve the chloride corrosion damage problems of the rebar in reinforced concrete structures under the chloride environment. The effects of 1.0% triethanolamine (abbreviated as 1.0% TEA), 1.0% Ca(NO2)2, and 0.5% TEA + 0.5% Ca(NO2)2 (abbreviated as 1.0% composite corrosion inhibitor) on the electrochemical performance and modification mechanism of the mortar specimens were investigated by combining macro experiment and microanalysis. The results showed that the electrode potential of the rebar was effectively improved by incorporating the 1.0% composite corrosion inhibitor. This composite corrosion inhibitor displayed the ability to stabilize the electrode potential of the rebar; it also formed a passive film on the surfaces of the rebar, protected the rebar from chloride attack, and achieved satisfactory electrochemical performance. In addition, it could also effectively improve the strength of the mortar specimens and possessed the strong ability to bind chloride ions, thus signifying that it could promote cement hydration and accelerate the formation of cement to form AFt crystals. Therefore, the results of this investigation confirmed that this composite corrosion inhibitor could be effectively used in practical engineering to prevent the corrosion of reinforced concrete structures.

The paper presents an impact of the addition of industrial machining chips on the mechanical properties of polymer concrete. As an additional filler, six types of industrial waste machining chips were used: steel fine chips, steel medium chips, steel thick chips, aluminium fine chips, aluminium medium chips, and titanium fine chips. During the research, the influence of the addition of chips on the basic parameters of mechanical properties, i.e., tensile strength, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and Young’s modulus, was analyzed. On the basis of the obtained results, conclusions were drawn that the addition of chips from machining causes a decrease in the value of the mechanical properties parameters of the polymer concrete even by 30%. The mechanism of cracking of samples, which were subjected to durability tests, was also explored. In addition, it was found that some chip waste can be used as a substitute for natural fillers during preparation of a mineral cast composition without losing much of the strength parameters.

Bamboo scrimber is a new natural fiber-reinforced composite material in modern industry. In this paper, the tensile creep characteristics of this material were chosen as the object of the study. First, axial tensile fracture experiments were conducted on different test specimens to determine the corresponding strength data. Then six sets of standard tensile creep experiments were conducted under different given stress levels. Finally, the Maxwell constitutive model was applied in fitting the relationship between strain and time. The results showed that the traditional Maxwell viscoelasticity constitutive model will result in some errors in the fitting results, while the combined fractional and Maxwell model can provide much higher accuracy in this study, thus it is more suitable for engineering applications. This paper provides a solid foundation for a better understanding of the mechanism of the bamboo scrimber creep behavior.

As the wind turbine size gets larger, the optimal design of blades, which is a major source of energy for the wind turbines and also the cause of loads, is becoming more important than anything else. Therefore, reducing the load on the blade should be the top priority in designing a blade. In this article, we studied the vibration control of the stiffened wind blades subjected to a wind load with piezoelectric sensors and actuators to mitigate fluctuations in loading and adding damping to the blade. The model is a laminated composite blade with a shear web and the PZT piezomaterial layers embedded on the top and bottom surfaces act as a sensor and actuator, respectively. A uniformly distributed external wind load is assumed over the entire plate surface for simplicity. The first-order shear deformation (FSDT) theory is adopted, and Hamilton’s principle is used to derive the finite element equation of motion. The modal superposition technique and the Newmark-β\beta method are used in numerical analysis to calculate the dynamic response. Using the constant gain negative velocity feedback control algorithm, vibration characteristics and transient responses are compared. Furthermore, vibration control at various locations of the shear webs subjected to an external load is discussed in detail. Through various calculation results performed in this study, this article proposes a method of designing a blade that can reduce the load by actively responding to the external load acting on the wind turbine blade.

Sewage sludge is frequently stable and safe when used as construction materials since it bypasses several of the costly and energy-intensive phases of usage. This is supported by numerous studies, particularly when the proportion of sewage sludge is at ideal levels. The primary goal of this article is to demonstrate the use of sewage sludge in building and construction materials. Novel properties such as slump flow and setting time as well as strength properties such as compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, elastic modulus, impact energy, and absorbed energy are the main aspects studied in this review (Part Ⅰ). Part II describes the physical and chemical properties, durability, and morphological structure of the sewage sludge ash. The findings in this review (Part Ⅰ) indicate that the flow of concrete decreased with the addition of sewage sludge ash due to its porous nature, but the strength properties improved with sewage sludge ash due to micro-filling voids and pozzolanic activity, which improved the binding properties of cement paste. However, optimum substitution is critical as a greater proportion decreased the strength due to a deficiency of flowability, which boosted compaction energy leading to more cavities. Different studies recommend different optimum doses. However, the typical range for the optimum dose of sewage sludge ash is 5–10% (by wt) of cement.

The aim of this paper is to study the effect of friction coefficient and impact angle on the failure behaviors of glass fiber reinforced aluminum laminates (GLARE) under the low-velocity impact (LVI) loading. A methodology is developed in commercial software ABAQUS/Explicit, and its accuracy is verified based on the results of comparison between simulation and experiment. In the simulation, Johnson–Cook flow stress model and surface-based cohesive behavior are carried out to simulate the damage evolution of aluminum alloy layers and delamination at the interface. Further, both the dynamic response history and damage mechanism characterization of these hybrid laminates are presented and compared carefully. Additionally, due to the advantage of simulation, it is accurate and easy to discuss on the evolution of the damage contour consisting of the damage degree of composite and metal layers as well as the interface between them. Finally, the influence rules of friction coefficient and angle on the failure behaviors of GLARE under LVI are drawn clearly.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is widely used in high-tech industries because of its interesting characteristics and properties. This material presents good strength and stiffness, relatively low density, high damping ability, good dimensional stability, and good corrosion resistance. However, the machinability of composite materials is complex because of the matrix/fiber interface, being a challenging machining material. The CFRP milling process is still necessary to meet dimensional tolerances, the manufacture of difficult-to-mold features like pockets or complexes advance surfaces, finish the edges of laminated composites, or drill holes for the assembly of the components. Besides, the demand for low-cost, reconfigurable manufacturing systems of the industry demonstrates that the application of industrial robots (IRs) in the CFRP milling process becomes an alternative for providing automation and flexibility. Therefore, the objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of the low payload IR KUKA KR60 HA in a milling experiment of CFRP, which indicates its potential application as an alternative to milling process. Furthermore, the influence of the cutting tool geometry as well as the cutting parameters in the machining behavior with IRs is evaluated.

In this study, the effects of steel fibers on the mechanical properties of the geopolymer concrete – compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength; compressive elastic modulus; and fracture properties – were evaluated. Milling steel fibers were incorporated into the geopolymer concrete, and the volume fraction of the steel fibers was varied from 0 to 2.5%. Fly ash and metakaolin were chosen as the geopolymer precursors. Fracture parameters – critical effective crack length, initial fracture toughness, and unstable fracture toughness – were measured by a three-point bending test. The results indicated that all the mechanical properties of the geopolymer concrete are remarkably improved by the steel fibers with the optimum dosage. When the steel fiber content was under 2%, the cubic and axial compressive strength and the compressive elastic modulus increased. The inclusion of 2% steel fibers enhanced the cubic and axial compressive strength and the compressive elastic modulus by 27.6, 23.7, and 47.7%, respectively. When the steel fiber content exceeded 2%, the cubic and axial compressive strength and the compressive elastic modulus decreased, having values still higher than those of the geopolymer concrete without steel fibers. The splitting tensile strength and flexural strength of the concrete were enhanced with increasing steel fiber content. When the steel fiber content was 2.5%, the increment of the splitting tensile strength was 39.8%, whereas that of the flexural strength was 134.6%. The addition of steel fibers effectively improved the fracture toughness of the geopolymer concrete. With 2.5% steel fibers, the initial fracture toughness had an increase of 27.8%, and the unstable fracture toughness increased by 12.74 times compared to that of the geopolymer concrete without the steel fibers.

3D-printing finds increasing applications including the dental implant. We report in this study a nicely printed and then cured composite consisting of nano-ceramic and photosensitive resin, targeting oral prosthesis application. The results show that the 3D-printed material has good geometry accuracy and satisfactory hardness, justifying its potential as an advanced manufacturing methodology for future dentistry.

This article discusses the influence of fiber types, including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber, polyethylene (PE) fiber, and steel fiber (SF), on the compressive strength, flexural strength, bending toughness, and tensile ductility of lightweight cement-based composites. The fiber dispersion and the microscopic morphology were assessed using fluorescence and scanning electron microscopes. The result showed that the SFs had the best effect in enhancing the compressive and flexural strengths of lightweight cement-based composites, and its compressive and flexural strengths reached 88.9 and 17.6 MPa, respectively. Compared with the PVA and the SFs, the PE fiber had the most significant effect on the ductility of lightweight cement-based composites; the tensile strength and the ultimate tensile strain were 3.29 MPa and 2.56%, respectively, due to a very high bridging capability provided by the PE fiber. A large amount of hydration products adhered to the surface of the PVA fiber, which improved the adhesion between the cement matrix and the PVA fiber and caused the rupture of most of the PVA fiber. Overall, lightweight toughness cement-based composites containing PVA and PE fibers have a good deformability, which can meet the needs of construction and transportation engineering applications.

Metal-composite laminates and joints are applied in aircraft manufacturing and maintenance (repairing) using aluminum alloys (AA) and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP). In these applications, drilling has a prominent place due to its vast application in aeronautical structures’ mechanical joints. Thus, this study presents the influence of uncoated carbide drills (85C, 86C, H10N), cutting speeds (v c = 20, 40, and 60 m min−1), and feed rates (f = 0.05, 0.15, and 0.25 mm rev−1) on delamination factor, thrust force (Ft{F}_{\text{t}}), and burr formation in dry drilling metal-composite laminates and joints (AA2024/GFRP/AA2024). Experiments were performed, analyzed, and optimized using the Box–Behnken statistical design. Microscopic digital images for delamination evaluation, piezoelectric dynamometer for thrust force acquisition, and burr analysis were considered. The major finding was that the thrust force during drilling depends significantly on the feed rate. Another significant factor was the influence of the drill type (combined or not with feed rate). In fact, it was verified that the feed rate and the drill type were the most significant parameters on the delamination factor, while the feed rate was the most relevant on thrust force. The cutting speed did not affect significantly thrust force and delamination factor at exit(FdaS)\hspace{.25em}({F}_{{\text{da}}_{\text{S}}}). However, the combination f × v c was significant in delamination factor at entrance (FdaE)\text{ }({F}_{{\text{da}}_{\text{E}}}). Based on the optimized input parameters, they presented lower values for delamination factors (FdaE=1.18{F}_{{\text{da}}_{\text{E}}}=1.18 and FdaS=1.33{F}_{{\text{da}}_{\text{S}}}=\hspace{.25em}1.33) and thrust force (Ft=67.3N{F}_{\text{t}}=67.3\hspace{.5em}\text{N}). These values were obtained by drilling the metal-composite laminates with 85C-tool, 0.05 mm rev−1 feed rate, and 20 m min−1 cutting speed. However, the burrs at the hole output of AA2024 were considered unsatisfactory for this specific condition, which implies additional investigation.

Characterization of shear behavior in composite materials remains a not fully solved problem. In the last fifty years, many different approaches have been proposed to solve this problem (rail shear, thin-walled tube torsion, off-axis tensile, ±45° tensile, Arcan, Iosipescu, asymmetric four-point bend, plate twist, v-notched rail shear, off-axis flexural, and shear frame), although none of these approaches have achieved an unquestionable solution. For this reason, proposals of alternative methods and comparison between different experimental techniques are of interest. In the present work, the use of cruciform samples with the fiber oriented at 45° with respect to the load directions, and subjected to tension-compression (creating a pure shear stress state at the central part of the samples), is studied. The experimental results of the cruciform samples have been compared with the off-axis tests (with the fiber at 10°) for the same material (AS4/8552), finding a good agreement between the shear experimental curves, especially at the initial part of the curve, where the shear modulus is calculated. Nevertheless, the shear strength value obtained by means of the cruciform specimen has shown to be significantly lower than that obtained using the off-axis test. A Finite Element numerical model of the cruciform specimen has been developed to analyze the stress field of the samples. Numerical results have shown that there is a central area of the cruciform specimens where a pure and uniform shear stress state is developed, which is suitable for the evaluation of the shear constitutive law of the material. It has been observed that there is a (σ 22) stress concentration in the transition between the straight and curved parts of the boundary geometry of the samples, which explain some premature failures of the samples. This premature failure could be avoided with tabs extended up to the beginning of the central part of the sample.

The undoped YVO4 and Ce3+-doped YVO4 single crystals have been successfully grown by the Czochralski method in a medium frequency induction furnace. The X-ray diffraction patterns testified that all samples exhibited the pure tetragonal YVO4 crystalline phase without any parasitic phases. The optical properties of Ce3+-doped YVO4 single crystals with different doping concentrations were investigated via a combination of absorption, emission, and excitation spectra. Dependence of luminescence and absorption intensity on Ce3+ doping concentration was discussed at different excitation wavelengths. The typical transitions of Ce3+ ions and the unusual intrinsic luminescent phenomena of VO43−{\text{VO}}_{4}^{3-} groups were observed and investigated in Ce3+-doped YVO4 crystals. More attentions were paid to ascertaining the corresponding transition states, analyzing luminescent mechanism, and revealing the energy transfer from VO43−{\text{VO}}_{4}^{3-} to Ce3+ ions. In addition, the CIE chromaticity coordinates and correlated color temperature were calculated on a basis of emission spectra under different excitation wavelengths.

This study experimentally investigates the effect of the opening configuration on the buckling stability and bearing performance of a structural beam web used in a commercial aircraft made of composite materials. The buckling and strength analyses on three opening configurations (circular, oblong, and rhombic) were carried out using test samples with identical web surface size. It is found that the rhombic opening has the minimum effect on the buckling stability and strength of the structure. To compensate for the effect of the opening, two reinforcement methods, using reinforcement rib and thickening the sample, were also investigated in this study. It is concluded that thickening the sample can more effectively improve the buckling stability and strength performance of beam web structure and hence has relatively higher structural reinforcement efficiency.

Urban development and the construction industry account for a considerable proportion of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Emerging biological materials, such as those proposed in this paper, seek to utilize the metabolic functions of living microorganisms to reduce some of the negative impacts of humans on the environment. The material explorations demonstrated in this paper propose a living photosynthetic carbon capture textile for the built environment. We demonstrate making practices that integrate living microorganisms within experimental methods of digital fabrication; specifically, harnessing photosynthetic microalgae that feed on waste and are capable of sequestering CO2 from internal building settings. These new biocomposites incorporate flexible textile substrates, i.e. cotton, hessian, polyester, and canvas, which provide a range of algae laden matrices that continue to develop and change during the useful part of the material’s lifecycle. This paper explores biological 3D printing fabrication processes and studies the development of mixtures that are compatible with the fabrication method and support microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris) metabolic processes. A range of incubation methods are assessed, highlighting the need for a support environment. The biocomposites’ performance is tested using imaging pulse amplitude modulation fluorometry (Imaging-PAM) to investigate changes in microalgae chlorophyll fluorescence over a 14 day period.

The paper presents studies performed on polymer-cementitious composite made of epoxy resin coating modified with aggregate and cementitious substrate. Epoxy resin is a perfect material that can be used to protect cementitious materials. According to its manufacturer, it can be mixed with fine aggregate. Coarse aggregate made of building demolition wastes is mostly utilized in concrete mixtures or road structures. Fine aggregate is not widely used. Therefore, the novelty of this research was the utilization of recycled fine aggregate (RFA) in epoxy resin coatings. Natural fine aggregate (NFA) was also used as an extender in the coating. The natural aggregate in the coating was partially replaced with recycled aggregate in amounts of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of its weight. Sixteen specimens of polymer-cementitious composites were prepared for the flexural tensile strength test, and thirty-two specimens for the compressive strength test. The macroscale tests were performed after 35 days of curing (28 days – cementitious substrate, and 7 days – epoxy resin). The results show that the epoxy resin coating does not affect the flexural tensile and compressive strength of the analyzed composites. Moreover, the type of aggregate used in the coating does not have a significant impact on the measured properties of polymer-cementitious composites. Economic analysis was performed in order to estimate the cost of the natural and RFAs used in epoxy resin coatings. The calculations show that a higher amount of RFA should be used to increase savings.

The structure and behaviour of two gypsum composites after exposition to elevated temperatures were investigated. The silica sand and fine basalt aggregate were used as solid fillers. The changes in structure and composition at temperatures from 50 to 1,000°C were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction together with the size and strength of the samples and their pore size distribution. The structure of gypsum matrix changed significantly at 1,000°C in both composites, while the aggregate particles were not changed. It was found that even if the silica sand is considered as less suitable filler at high temperatures because of its volume changes, the gypsum with sand performed better than gypsum with basalt at the highest temperatures, because the shrinkage of the gypsum matrix was compensated by the increase in the volume of aggregate. The final volume change at 1,000°C was 3.5% in composite with silica sand and 6.8% in composite with basalt. The residual compressive strength of both composites was about 9.4%. No cracks appeared in the samples and no spalling was observed.

The objective of this work is to improve the structural characteristics of hollow glass microsphere (HGM) filled epoxy syntactic foam composites with little voids content and improved HGM dispersion in the composite.

In this paper, a new method is developed to investigate the anti-penetration performance of the steel/nylon sandwich plate, which incorporates experimental method with numerical simulation. Constitutive parameters of the steel/nylon sandwich plate are measured by the Hopkinson Pressure Bar, and LS-DYNA is applied to simulate the penetration process of projectiles into the sandwich plate. The dynamic response, failure modes and energy absorption coefficients are obtained, and the penetration tests are conducted to verify the numerical method. Results show: results obtained by experimental and numerical methods have very high agreement, which demonstrates that the method proposed can be applicable for predicting the anti-penetration performance of the sandwich plate.

The accurate characterization of fabrics used in vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) is essential in order to model the flow through these porous preforms. A wide range of these fabrics are available for composite manufacturing through VARTM and thus brings about a need to opt a methodology which characterizes the in-plane permeability of these preforms. These permeability values can then be used in simulations that can track the flow front progression and mold filling time. This work identifies the permeability of an E-glass fabric based on Darcy's law. Woven fabric having areal weight of 200 grams per square meter (gsm) is under consideration. The experiments are conducted at constant pressure conditions using 2D Radial flow method. Stereo microscopy of the preform material is done for detailed study of the weaving pattern. It is concluded that plain woven fabric exhibits anisotropic behavior when tested for in-plane permeability. Permeability is found to be higher in a direction which offers more interspacing between adjacent fibers threads causing more resin to flow in this direction.

In this study, the flexural bearing capacity and failure mechanism of carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum laminate (CARALL) beams with a double-channel cross-section and a 3/2 laminated configuration were experimentally and numerically studied. Two types of specimens using different carbon fiber layup configurations ([0°/90°/0°]3 and [45°/0°/−45°]3) were fabricated using the pressure molding thermal curing forming process. The double-channel CARALL beams were subjected to static three-point bending tests to determine their failure behaviors in terms of ultimate bearing capacity and failure modes. Owing to the shortcomings of the two-dimensional Hashin failure criterion, the user-defined FORTRAN subroutine VUMAT suitable for the ABAQUS/Explicit solver and an analysis algorithm were established to obtain a progressive damage prediction of the CFRP layer using the three-dimensional Hashin failure criterion. Various failure behaviors and mechanisms of the CARALL beams were numerically analyzed. The results indicated that the numerical simulation was consistent with the experimental results for the ultimate bearing capacity and final failure modes, and the failure process of the double-channel CARALL beams could be revealed. The ultimate failure modes of both types of double-channel CARALL beams were local buckling deformation at the intersection of the upper flange and web near the concentrated loading position, which was mainly caused by the delamination failure among different unidirectional plates, tension and compression failure of the matrix, and shear failure of the fiber layers. The ability of each fiber layer to resist damage decreased in the order of 90° fiber layer > 0° fiber layer > 45° fiber layer. Thus, it is suggested that 90°, 0°, and 45° fiber layers should be stacked for double-channel CARALL beams.

Interfacial degradation is the main reason for deterioration of mechanical properties of composites in hydrothermal environments. In this study, the effect of the interphase on water diffusion in two types of unidirectional continuous carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide 6 (CF/PA6) composites is investigated through experimental measurements, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. The moisture diffusion coefficient of composite at different environmental temperatures is characterized by water immersion tests for analyzing the barrier and accelerating effects of the interphase layer. Based on the experimental results, the three-phase Halpin–Tsai model is derived and validated, and then the critical diffusivity is obtained to quantify the interfacial effect during the diffusion process. To further validate the present three-phase Halpin–Tsai model, the stable and transient finite element models of moisture diffusion are developed. It is found that the critical diffusivity coefficient of the interphase for the CF/PA6 composite system is 7.31 times higher than that of the matrix.

This study aims to investigate the role of nano TiO2 in modifying the characteristics of Shanghai clayey silt – alluvial soil in Yangtze river estuary. The Shanghai clayey silt is first mixed with nano TiO2 with different size group and content before it is made to undergo liquid and plastic limit tests, standard Proctor compaction tests, and acid-resistant tests. The results show that nano TiO2 can substantially increase the liquid limit and plastic limit of TiO2-treated clayey silt, but can decrease the plasticity index of it to some degree. The result from standard Proctor compaction tests shows that the maximum dry bulk density (MBD) decreases and the optimum water content (OWC) increases compared with untreated samples. Acid-resistance of sample is significantly increased after being treated by nano titanium dioxide. The data provided by this study can be used for not only the soil and water conservation, but also for soil improvement, diversity of vegetables and animals, amelioration of crop land, as well as sustainable development.

In this paper effects of material constructions on natural frequencies and critical aerodynamic pressures are investigated. It is assumed that the rectangular plate is made of a polymeric matrix reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets or carbon nanotubes. A general closed analytical method of solution is presented. It is demonstrated that three parameters define entirely the location of the critical flutter pressure. The influence of material properties and transverse shear effects is characterized by a set of multipliers. They can be easily adopted in design procedures.

A modified vertical braiding machine and closed annular axis mandrels with a special-shaped cross section were used to braid annular axis preforms under four different technical parameters. After measuring the braiding angles and yarn spacing of the braided preform in different areas of the mandrels, it was found that the braiding angle increased by 20.9% and the yarn spacing decreased by 19.8% when the speed of the yarn carrier was doubled. The braiding angle decreased by 31.1% and the yarn spacing increased by 28.6% when the rotation speed of the mandrels was doubled. The results show that the rotation speed of the mandrel has a slightly greater influence on the braiding angle and the yarn spacing. By using the modified braiding machine to braid the annular axis preforms, multi-layer continuous braided preforms can be achieved on compact equipment. And the structure of the annular axis braided preforms can be changed by changing the technical parameters.
