Most episodes of bacterial cystitis are recurrent infections due to ascending bacteria of different serotypes. The causes of diagnostic problems, especially of false-positive and false-negative urine-cultures are discussed and the possible importance of chlamydia and mycoplasma is stressed. Finally, the therapeutic possibilities are discussed, with the indication for single-dose and long-term therapy.
