Introduction: Recently, a new hereditary disease, bovine lymphocyte intestinal retention defect (BLIRD), was discovered in Holstein cattle in France and is caused by a variant in the Integrin subunit beta 7 (ITGB7) gene. The altered cell adhesion molecule resulting from this point mutation is responsible for an impaired tissue of CD4 T lymphocytes from the blood to intestinal tissue. The aim of this study was to assess the allelic frequency of this deleterious variant in the local Holstein population and to clinically examine ten BLIRD-affected Holstein cattle from Switzerland in order to characterise the phenotype of this new hereditary disease, which is still unknown to the veterinary community. BLIRD was associated with severely impaired animal health in the rearing phase and significantly reduced animal welfare due to weakened immune defences, below-average development and recurrent diarrhoea. Further examinations revealed increased leucocyte values and a slightly increased average age at first calving. Affected homozygous animals are labelled internationally as BLIRD-carrier homozygous (LRS), BLIRD-carrier heterozygous (LRC) and BLIRD-free (LRF). An obvious inbreeding practice was clearly demonstrated by the pedigree analysis of the ten animals, which all trace back to the potential founder bull. Herein, BLIRD has been detected and described in Switzerland for the first time. The ITGB7 variant allele has a frequency of 2,1 % in the current Swiss Holstein population, which is below the level of the cholesterol deficiency (CD)-associated apolipoprotein B (APOB) variant allele with a frequency of 3,9 %. Although relatively rare, attention should be paid to the BLIRD genotype when mating in order to exclude further affected animals. In cattle with clinically suspected BLIRD, the diagnosis should be confirmed by genetic testing.

Introduction: Five cases of ovarian tumors (granulosa cell tumors) in cattle are presented from the patient load of the Vetsuisse University of Zurich and Bern. The aim of this work was to demonstrate the variable development of the illness and to indicate diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities to the practicing veterinarians. Case 1 shows bilateral appearance and the development of malignancy and metastases. The main symptoms in case 2 were the development of the mammary gland in a juvenile animal and the behavior modification due to a hormonal imbalance. The cases 3, 4 and 5 underwent surgery, case 4 restarted reproductive activity resulting in five subsequent pregnancies. The initial presumption is a result of a gynecological including ultrasonographic examination and can be verified by the analysis of Müllerian Inhibiting Hormone in serum. The decision to perform surgery should be done rapidly, as normal fertility can be achieved if the tumor is located unilaterally. Tumor growth and potential malignancy can provoke fatal health issues and also make it impossible to use meat of these animals for consumption.

Introduction: After the successful eradication of the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in cattle in Austria, the risk of infections with the border disease virus (BDV) remains. Both viruses belong to the pestivirus genus. BDV infections lead to false-positive results in BVDV surveillance. This can be attributed to the contact to small ruminant populations. In particular, keeping cattle together with sheep or goats on a farm or alpine pasture are significant risk factors. Between 2015 and 2022, BDV type 3 was detected in 15 cattles in Austria. These animals were almost exclusively persistently infected calves. However, a positive antibody result for pestiviruses can lead to an extremely time-consuming and costly, and not always successful search for the source of the infection if no active virus excretor is found. This study documents how small ruminants can be integrated into pestivirus monitoring with a manageable amount of work and costs. 23 406 sheep and goat samples from two brucellosis surveillance programs in small ruminants were analyzed retrospectively. Blood samples were examined using pestivirus real-time pool RT-PCR (qPCR). Direct virus detection of BDV-3 was achieved in 40 sheep from five different federal states. Over the entire investigation period a further 37 detections of BDV-3 were found in cattle, sheep and goats outside of this study throughout Austria. This study accounts for 52 % of all border disease detections from 2015 to 2022. By including small ruminants in pestivirus monitoring, the disruptive factor BDV and the risk of its introduction into cattle herds can be significantly minimized in the future.

Introduction: A sensor ear tag (SET) containing Global Positioning System (GPS), accelerometer, Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID), and Bluetooth technologies was tested for wearing comfort and compliance with animal welfare requirements in cattle in a free stall barn and on summer pasture in Switzerland. The SET was equipped with a long-lasting battery via solar panel and used a «twin pin» fixing system. Right ears of 12 newborns and 26 adolescent animals were tagged with the SET. While left ears were tagged simultaneously with official ear tags in newborns, the adolescent animals already carried the official ear tags. The newborns stayed in a free stall barn during the entire experiment, while adolescent animals were housed in a free stall barn and on pasture during summer. All animals developed crusts beginning on day 7 after tagging with the SET. Pain reactions were observed occasionally in the first two weeks. Ear growth in newborns during 11 months of observation did not differ between ears with SET and official ear tags. Cortisol concentration in saliva of newborns decreased in the first week after tagging which is physiological for this age group. In older animals cortisol concentrations in saliva were not affected. We registered 19 incidences in 11 animals with the SET, that required veterinary or staff intervention. Two animals lost the SET with ear injury. Scars due to tag migration were observed in ears of all newborns after the 9th month of observation. In conclusion, SET with a weight of 32 g that need a twin pin fixation in cows do not seem to induce systemic or local inflammations more frequently compared to official ear tags; however, the higher risk of accidental injuries and migration in ear cartilage would not meet Swiss welfare standards and the attachment to the ear needs to be improved for general use.

Introduction: In the present study, risk groups for infectious foot disorders were identified on two large Swiss cattle mountain pastures by analyzing animal and treatment data of a total of 3256 animals of the bovine species. Both mountain pastures were part of the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) consultancy project «Healthy animals, attractive herdsmen positions and less medication on large cattle mountain pastures». The project was launched in 2020 following the increased incidence of lameness on these mountain pastures. Bacteriological and histological analyses were to provide information as to whether the most common foot disorder was interdigital phlegmon (IP) or whether digital dermatitis also occurred. Further, the temporal distribution of cases over the mountain pasture season and the influence of mountain pasture and year were investigated and interpreted for the project years 2020 to 2022, and treatment incidences were compared between years. Multiple treatment cycles in the same individual were classified into persistent infections and new infections. Nineteen of 394 first-treated cattle were clinically examined, 12 of them were additionally sampled for bacteriological and histological analyses. All cases examined showed, both clinically and following laboratory analyses, typical characteristics for IP. In contrast, there was no specific evidence for the presence of digital dermatitis. No persistent infections occurred during treatment with benzylpenicillin. Multivariate logistic regression analyses identified > 365-730-day-old cattle (odds ratio OR 8,29), as well as inseminated (OR 5,30) and non-inseminated (OR 7,85) heifers as risk groups for the disease studied (p < 0,05). Association with the oestrus activity of non-inseminated heifers and a generally higher locomotor activity in heifers compared to cows - with a correspondingly increased risk of injury - is conceivable. Meat breeds had a reduced risk compared to dairy breeds (OR 0,29). Breed differences in behavior and/or the effectiveness of the local immune response might have an impact. Knowing about these risk groups can be put to use in the future when selecting animals to be taken to the mountain pastures and/or when planning pasture management in order to reduce the prevalence of infectious foot disorders and thereby the use of antibiotics.

Introduction: Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was introduced into Swiss antimicrobial resistance monitoring in 2022 as an additional method to phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility testing by broth microdilution to characterize presumptive third-generation cephalosporin-resistant (3GC-R) Escherichia coli. Caecal samples from Swiss slaughter calves and fattening pigs, as well as beef and pork meat from Swiss retail taken in 2021, were analyzed for the presence of 3GC-R E. coli according to European harmonized protocols. In 2021, 3GC-R E. coli was detected in 23,8 % of slaughter calves, 5,9 % of fattening pigs, and 0 % of meat. Comparative analysis of the antimicrobial resistance results obtained by phenotypic measurement and those obtained by the detection of corresponding underlying molecular mechanisms by WGS showed very high agreement (99 %). Resistance to third-generation cephalosporins (3GCs) was mainly associated with the presence of blaCTX-M-15 in E. coli isolates from calves and blaCTX-M-1 in E. coli isolates from pigs and mutations in the ampC-promoter (g.-42 C>T) in E. coli isolates from both animal species. Moreover, WGS data were used for phylogenetic analysis based on multi locus sequence types (MLST) and core genome MLST(cgMLST) revealing that 3GC-R E. coli isolated from Swiss slaughter calves and fattening pigs were genetically diverse. In this study, it was shown that using WGS alone to monitor antimicrobial resistance could detect trends in known molecular antimicrobial resistance mechanisms while also providing other valuable information about the isolates, such as genetic relatedness. However, only by combining phenotypic susceptibility testing and WGS early detection of previously unknown resistance mechanisms will be possible.

Introduction: Escherichia albertii is an emerging zoonotic foodborne pathogen. Its prevalence, distribution, and reservoirs are not yet clearly defined. In this study, we evaluated the occurrence and genomic characteristics of E. albertii in livestock from Switzerland. A total of 515 caecal samples from sheep, cattle, calves, and fattening swine were collected between May 2022 and August 2022 at abattoir level. Using an E. albertii-specific PCR targeting the Eacdt-gene, 23,7 % (51/215) of swine from 24 different farms were positive. One (1 %) out of 100 calves showed a positive PCR result, while all samples from sheep and cattle were PCR negative. Eight E. albertii isolates could be recovered from swine samples and were analysed using whole-genome sequencing. All eight isolates belonged to ST2087 or a ST4619 group subclade, as did most genomes of the 11 available global swine isolates from public databases. These two clusters shared the presence of a virulence plasmid harboring the sitABCD and iuc genes. In summary, we demonstrate that fattening swine constitute an E. albertii reservoir in Switzerland and describe specific swine-associated lineages.

Introduction: The goal of this study was to investigate the hair cortisol concentration (HCC) in healthy and ill cows and their newborn calves. A total of 40 cows and their 42 newborn calves were divided into two groups: group 1 consisted of 19 clinically healthy cows and their 20 newborn calves, and group 2 comprised 21 cows that had had a chronic illness in the third trimester of gestation and their 22 newborn calves. A liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system was used to measure the HCC in hair samples that were collected from the cows and calves on the day the calves were born. In both groups, the mean HCCs of the calves was significantly higher than that of the cows (group 1, 31,0 vs. 0,6 pg/mg; group 2, 19,4 vs. 0,8 pg/mg; P.

Introduction: Cattle births can carry the risk of transmissible and zoonotic diseases. The focus of the present study was the excretion of Coxiella (C.) burnetii during cattle births. Small ruminants are considered as the main reservoir of C. burnetii. Cattle are often subclinical carriers and their role as potential reservoir has not been fully elucidated until now, although the excretion of Coxiella has been demonstrated during cattle birth. The study recorded all births, caesarean sections and one abortion in 40 cattle at the ruminant clinic of the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern in the study period from March 2019 to March 2020. A placenta -, milk - and fecal sample was examined for antigen diagnostics using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In addition, a serum sample was analyzed to detect C. burnetii-specific antibodies. Antigen and/or antibodies (placenta, n=8/9; milk, n=2/9; faeces, n=1/9; serology n= 3/9) were detected in 22,5 % of the cows (n=9/40) without the presence of specific clinical symptoms. It is essential to sensitize contact persons to this zoonosis, since Coxiella can trigger Q-fever in humans.

Introduction: Reports on bovine colon polyps are rare. The present report demonstrates macro- and microscopically hyperplastic colon polyps of a seven-year-old German Simmental cow. Differential diagnoses (adenoma and adenocarcinoma) and aetiology are discussed. Even in cattle, intestinal polyps should be considered as a cause of intussusception.

Introduction: Undersupply and oversupply of dairy cows with essential trace elements should be avoided from the point of view of animal health and environmental pollution. The aim of the study was to proof the results faecal analyzes on the nutritional supply situation with essential trace elements in comparison to measurements from total mixed ration (TMR) analyses. Concentrations of iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), Mangan (Mn), selenium (Se), cobalt (Co), molybdenum (Mo) were measured as representative multicentric random sample in 574 TMR, 600 pooled faecal and blood samples from dairy cows. Trace elements, Fe in 0 %, Se 18 %, Zn 43 %, Cu 52 %, Co 53 % and Mn 59 %, were within the target range. Undersupply was found in 0 to 8 % and an oversupply in 39 to 100 % of the TMR samples. The tolerance limit for Fe was exceeded in 11 % and for Mo in 13 %. The results indicate the need for optimized ration design. The trace element concentrations in the faecal samples varied over a wide range. Results of pooled faecal samples (n=10 per pool) corresponded closely with the mean values calculated from the individual samples (r2 > 0,9). Correlation between element concentrations in the TMR and faecal samples for Fe (r=0,687), Cu (r=0,675), Zn (r=0,635), Mn (r=0,656), Se (r=0,573), Co (r=0,795), and Mo (r=0,708) were highly significant. No correlations were detected between the element concentrations in the TMR and in the blood samples. The regression analyzes showed a highly significant linear adjustment of the measured value distribution around the regression lines over the entire value range including the zero point. Reference values were calculated for the faecal concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, Se and Co. Tolerance reference limits in the TMR were calculated for the faecal concentrations of Fe and Mo. The trace element concentrations in the TMR samples reflect the nutritional supply situation. Knowledge of the nutritional supply situation of the herd is of great importance for the stock management of dairy cow. Fecal sample analyzes can be used as an alternative to TMR examinations to assess the nutritional supply situation.

Introduction: The study aimed to describe clinical indications for eye enucleation and exenteration, the occurrence of complications and long-term outcome in cattle, and examine owners' attitude towards enucleation and exenteration and their satisfaction with the surgical outcome. Medical records from the two veterinary teaching hospitals in Switzerland were reviewed to identify cattle that underwent unilateral enucleation or exenteration between January 2013 and December 2020. Data extracted included medical history, ocular examination, clinical diagnosis, surgical procedure including anesthesia, suture material and pattern used, complications, and treatment thereof. Long-term follow-up was evaluated via national animal database inquiries to determine survival time and via owners' interviews with the use of a standardized questionnaire that included questions regarding the occurrence of complications and reason for culling, production performances and perceived quality of life after surgery, concerns, factors affecting the decision to proceed with surgery, and general satisfaction with the outcome. Descriptive statistics, Fisher's exact tests and unpaired t-test were used to summarize the data and assess association between variables. Association was considered significant if p < 0,05. Thirty-eight cases were identified, with a median age of 5 years. More than half of the cases (55,3 %) were diagnosed with non-neoplastic ocular lesions represented by severe trauma with loss of globe content, globe rupture with history of infectious keratoconjunctivitis or hypopyon, or congenital malformations. The remaining cases were diagnosed with neoplastic lesions, including ocular squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), melanoma, or sarcoma. Complications following surgery were reported in 29 % of cases and included postoperative infection and recurrence of OSCC. There was no significant association between ocular diagnosis and the occurrence of postoperative complications or survival time. Surgery did not seem to influence the animals' postoperative production performance or the perceived quality of life. Most owners (92 %) were satisfied with the surgical outcome. The occurrence of postoperative complications leading to increased overall costs and culling was the main reason for lower owner satisfaction.

Introduction: The goals of this study were to investigate hair cortisol concentration (HCC) in seven different breeds of cows, to establish reference intervals for HCC in Brown Swiss cows and to compare cortisol concentrations of hair collected from four different areas of the body. Three groups of cows were used. Group 1 comprised 70 healthy cows representing four dairy breeds (Brown Swiss, Swiss Fleckvieh, Holstein Friesian, Water Buffalo) and three beef breeds (Raetian Grey, Limousin, Highland). Group 2 consisted of 60 healthy Brown Swiss cows in which two different hair samples were collected from the thoracic region to establish reference intervals; A samples consisted of hair that had grown for one month in a pre-clipped area, and B samples consisted of hair from a previously unshorn area. Group 3 comprised 21 healthy Brown Swiss cows, in which HCCs were measured in A and B samples from four different body regions (neck, shoulder, thorax, rump). Liquid chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry was used for cortisol measurement. In group 1, the highest HCCs were measured in Holstein Friesian cows at 1,75 pg/mg, which was significantly higher than those of the Brown Swiss, the Swiss Fleckvieh and the Water Buffalo cows. Hair cortisol concentration and daily milk yield of the 40 dairy cows were highly correlated (r = 0,57, P < 0,01). In group 2, the HCCs of 77 % of the A samples and 85 % of the B samp-les were below the laboratory's limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0,50 pg/mg and the results were expressed semiquantitatively as.

Introduction: Mandibular fractures are among the most common fractures in cattle. The medical records of 108 cattle with a mandibular fracture, that were referred to the University of Zurich Veterinary Hospital from 2005 to 2019, were analysed to document the types of treatment, complications and long-term outcomes. Cattle, still alive at the time of retrospective analysis, underwent clinical and radiographic examinations. A fall was the single most common cause of a mandibular fracture (48,1 %), and a third of all cattle had a concomitant disease at the time of referral. Seventy-five cattle (69,4 %) had a single fracture, 26 (24,1 %) had two fractures and seven (6,5 %) had three fractures of the mandible. The molar part of the mandibular body was most commonly (40,7 %) fractured followed by the diastema (23,6 %), the pars incisiva (13,4 %), the ramus (12,1 %) and the symphysis (10,2 %) of the mandible. The majority of cattle (84/108, 77,8 %) had open fractures. Treatment was instituted in 63/108 animals (58,3 %) with 77/148 fractures. Of these fractures, 28 were treated with plate osteosynthesis, 25 with an external fixator, 8 with cerclage wire, 7 using mixed techniques, 4 with fragment excision, 4 underwent conservative treatment and one a mucosal suture. In total, 45/108 animals (41,7 %) were culled because of multiple fractures, concomitant diseases and because of economic reasons. Complications occurred in 34 (54,0 %) treated cattle; 22 had abnormal wound healing of which 18 developed osteomyelitis complicated by a sequestrum (14). Of the treated 63 cattle, 56 (88,9 %) were discharged. The mean postoperative productive life was 46 ± 29,2 months for animals that were deceased at the time of the study. Thirteen of the cattle with a sequestrum remained in the herd for 15 to 92 months (mean, 47 months) and one for 2 months. The life expectancy after treatment did not differ significantly from that of the Brown Swiss and Swiss Holstein dairy cattle populations, where the cattle of this study mainly came from. Eleven cattle were available for long-term follow-up; all had a good general health status but nine had dental abnormalities including missing teeth, steps or enamel points, which did not noticeably affect the body condition of the animals. Surgical treatment of selected mandibular fractures had a favourable prognosis (52/63 healed, 82,5 %) in cattle.

Introduction: Fertility problems are the main reasons for culling dairy cows. Diseases of the female genital tract are also often the cause of antibiotic or hormonal treatments in bovine practices. The use of medicinal plants could expand the available therapeutics. The aim of the work was to analyze historical literature before the introduction of antibiotics in veterinary reproductive medicine. Five books in German language, published in Germany and Switzerland between 1878 and 1921, and one handwritten therapy booklet by the rural veterinarian Carl Ammann-Honegger (1879-1960) were systematically examined regarding the descriptions (AW) on gynecological diseases. The herbal and additional ingredients of the recipe, the target animal species, the type of administration and the indication were recorded in detail for each AW. The six literature sources contained a total of 103 AW (79 administered orally, 13 locally, and 11 both orally and locally). Almost two thirds of the AW (61) were based on a mixture of different plants (two to seven plants), and one third of the AW (31) on a single plant. A total of 55 plants were recorded. The most frequently mentioned medical plants were plants of the genus Juniperus (J. communis L. (19 AW), J. sabina L. (13 AW)) and Linum usitatissimum L. (18 AW), Matricaria chamomilla L. (13 AW) and Gentiana lutea L. (12 AW). The treatment of the Retentio secundinarum was the most frequently mentioned indication (44 AW), followed by parturition preparation (17 AW) and endometritis treatment (15 AW). The most frequently recorded plants can be divided based on their ingredients and their effect into (a) energy- and protein-rich forage plants, (b) generally appetizing, digestive- and metabolism-enhancing plants, (c) medical plants with a specific gynecological organotrophic effect and (d) according to current knowledge, predominantly toxic plants. Besides the antimicrobial active immunity to defence against bacterial infections, a stable barrier funcion of the endometrium contributes to uterine health. The plants classified under (a) - (c) have at least the potential for a positive effect on the immune system and the endometrial barrier function and thus contribute indirectly to the uterine health.

Introduction: Culicoides biting midges unexpectedly arose in Europe as highly efficient vectors of bluetongue virus in the epidemics that started in the Netherlands in 2006. They are known vectors of other orbiviruses, such as African horse sickness (AHSV) and epizootic haemorrhagic disease viruses (EHDV), which are not endemic to Europe. We investigated whether Culicoides occurring in Switzerland at two altitudes (Swiss Plateau, 650 meters above sea level [masl]; and pre-alpine, 2,130 masl) can act as vectors for AHSV and EHDV (two strains each). Biting midges were collected from farms, allowed to feed on virus-spiked blood meals through an artificial membrane in the laboratory and incubated for eight days under two temperature regimes (22 ± 6 °C or 26 ± 6 °C) reflecting a summer day or a hot spell on the Swiss Plateau. Vector competence was assessed from head homogenates by RT-qPCR and virus isolation. Overall, over 15,000 biting midges were exposed to any one of the four viruses. Fully disseminated infections were identified for all four virus strains in 14 individuals (6 C. obsoletus, 8 C. scoticus, as identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry), all originating from the Swiss Plateau, by RT-qPCR. Viable virus could be isolated from 8 of these specimens. Dissemination rates ranged from 1-5%. No viral dissemination was observed in biting midges from the high altitude, predominantly belonging to the species C. grisescens, which were only investigated at the high temperature regime. However, a multivariable logistic regression model revealed no statistical difference in the dissemination rates based on the origin of midges (altitude), virus strain or temperature regime. Thus, AHDV and EHDV transmission is feasible on the Swiss Plateau but unlikely in the pre-alpine area by considering vector abundance. Ways of potential virus introduction include illegal animal movement but also long-distance wind-dispersal of infectious Culicoides.

Introduction: The project «Healthy claws - the foundation for the future» aims to establish a Swiss national claw health monitoring based on digital recordings by claw trimmers during claw trimming. To assess claw health on the participating farms, between-herd prevalence, within-herd prevalence and cow prevalence of all claw disorders based on the «ICAR Claw Health Atlas» were calculated during this study. Claw trimmers underwent an intensive training and examination in order to ensure data quality. To guarantee the representativity of the prevalences, only farm claw trimmings were considered, where ≥ 80 % of the cows in a herd were trimmed. The calculations were based on 7108 cows and 403 heifers from 238 farms, during the period from February 2020 to February 2021. At least one claw disorder was present in 99,2 % of the farms, with 49,6 % of the heifers and 77,7 % of the cows having at least one claw disorder. The high prevalence is seen as a result of all ICAR claw disorders being considered, whereas not all of them are painful and consequently not all of them cause lameness. The absence of lameness assessment limits the evaluation of existing herd problems. High between-herd and cow prevalences were observed for the following claw disorders: heel horn erosion (92,9 %/64,7 %), digital dermatitis (55,9 %/20,7 %), white line disease (81,5 %/17,7 %) and sole hemorrhage (66,4 %/11,6 %). Asymmetric claws, corkscrew claws, scissor claws, horn fissure, interdigital phlegmon, swelling of the coronet and/or bulb and toe necrosis had low prevalences. The proportion of cows treated with a hoof block (0,5 %) was comparatively small in regard of the cows suffering from ulcers (5,6 %) and white line abscesses (2,5 %). The median within-herd prevalence of digital dermatitis was 5,6 %, with a maximal within-herd prevalence of 87,5 %. Despite the contagious nature of digital dermatitis, no increase of between-herd and cow prevalence has been observed in the past ten years throughout Switzerland. Based on this data, the Swiss claw health situation can be monitored, compared over time and improved in the future.

Introduction: Eating and rumination variables were recorded using a pressure sensor integrated into the noseband of a halter in 60 cows with left displaced abomasum (LDA) before and after postoperative administration of flunixin meglumine (FM). Group 1 comprised 9 healthy control cows that were used to establish reference intervals. Group 2 included 60 cows with LDA that received one of the following three treatments: intravenous saline solution (2A, n=20), 1.1 mg/kg FM (2B, n=20) or 2.2 mg/kg FM (2C, n=20) once daily for 3 days after right-flank omentopexy. Median eating times on the day before surgery were 93 (2A), 80 (2B) and 114 (2C) min, which were below the reference interval (246 to 381 min). On the day after surgery, eating times had increased significantly to 201 (2A), 172 (2B) and 216 (2C) min, after which time they continued to increase. Eating and rumination times, numbers of regurgitated feed boluses per day and chewing cycles per bolus did not differ among treated groups. Postoperative administration of FM did not affect eating and rumination variables in this study, and normalisation of these variables was attributable to surgical correction of LDA.

Introduction: Due to the widespread resistance of small ruminant gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) against anthelmintic drugs the established control strategies need to get adapted, aiming to reduce their high dependence from chemical drugs. Host-specific development of GIN can be used as a tool when grazing different species on the same pastures. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of mixed grazing with cattle on the development of GIN infections in goats. Goat flocks with 3 heifers (Group Mix; Visp: n = 12, Chur: n = 15) and without heifers (Group Solo; Visp: n = 7, Chur: n = 15) were grazed separately on pastures at altitudes of 910 m (location Chur) and 1240 m (location Visp) above sea level resp. during one grazing season each. The composition of the mixed groups aimed to achieve a similar intake of roughage of both species. The stocking rate and the availability of roughage in the solo groups was balanced proportionately according to the situation in the mixed groups. The individual GIN egg excretion, the composition of the GIN larvae in the faeces, the FAMACHA©-Score and the pasture contamination with infective GIN larvae was determined in monthly intervals. At both sites the goats in the mixed groups showed a significantly lower mean GIN egg excretion compared with those of the Solo groups (p .

Introduction: The lying and rumination behavior of dairy cows is internationally used as an animal welfare indicator. Dairy cow housing in Switzerland is subordinated to detailed legal requirements. It is particularly described that the lying area for cows must be covered with a sufficient amount of bedding. In the current study, we investigated whether bedding depth influences the lying and rumination behavior and thus, the animal welfare of healthy dairy cows housed in tie stalls. Bedding depth was categorized as ≤ 2 cm and > 2 cm. The lying and rumination behavior of 145 cows from 33 farms was recorded and analyzed considering farm effects; 105 cows were housed on ≤ 2 cm bedding, and 40 cows on > 2 cm bedding. Cows on > 2 cm bedding had on average a one hour longer daily lying time compared with cows on ≤ 2 cm bedding (mixed-effects linear regression: mean difference [cows on > 2 cm bedding - cows on ≤ 2 cm bedding] = 60,7 min/d; standard error = 28,6 min/d; p-value = 0,037). The odds of a cow to lie while ruminating were significantly higher in cows on > 2 cm bedding against cows on ≤ 2 cm bedding (mixed-effects logistic regression: Odds ratio = 1,27; CI95% [1,17-1,38]; p-value  2 cm can make a significant difference in the lying and rumination behavior of healthy dairy cows housed in tie stalls. Consequently, the animal welfare of dairy cows in tie stalls is improved by providing at least 2 cm of bedding.

Introduction: Clinical symptoms are mostly unspecific in hepatic diseases, thus most clinical examinations are of limited benefit in the diagnosis of hepatic diseases and often only general statements can be made about parenchymal damage or loss of function. In contrast, sonography of the liver can provide information about the type of lesion and thus also about the prognosis for the animal. A systematic assessment of organ size, parenchymal, vascular and bile duct system structures can facilitate to make possible findings. Sonography is also used in further diagnostics such as liver biopsy or chole-cystocentesis. This review describes the basic procedure for the sonographic examination in ruminants and camelids on the basis of selected findings relevant to the clinical veterinarian. In addition, potential and limits of additional diagnostics are discussed.

Introduction: This case report describes the surgical removal of a foreign body from the abdominal cavity in a Swiss Simmental cow with a disinfected magnet. The procedure was performed from the right flank a few days after a ruminotomy. An inflamed connective tissue mass was found and prepared. Since manual palpation could not locate the foreign body, a disinfected magnet was inserted into the mass and a crooked, headless nail of 3 cm length was removed. Ten days postsurgical antimicrobial treatment was necessary due to the local peritonitis. The cow recovered well after the second surgery and showed very good eating and ruminating behavior.

Introduction: Renal cysts are fluid-filled cavities with an epithelial lining that, depending on their size, can cause clinical symptoms and thus require conservative or surgical therapy. Nephrectomy is primarily used in cattle for simple kidney cysts while sclerotherapy is well established in humans and individual case reports have been published in small animal medicine. This case report describes the first successful treatment of a solitary, perirenal cyst using a right-sided laparotomy and intraluminal instillation of 96% ethanol solution in a Swiss Fleckvieh cow. Diagnostics, surgical procedures and aftercare are descripted and risks are compared to other methods. Sclerotherapy is an organ-preserving alternative to nephrectomy that is suitable for buiatric practice, the methodology should be confirmed in subsequent intervention studies.

Introduction: Herd medicine is a field of buiatrics characterized by regular and systematic visits by the veterinarian to improve the health and performance of the animals, the quality of animal products and finally the satisfaction of the farm staff. Internationally established key indicators, such as age at first calving, heat recognition rate or the percentage of cows with clinical mastitis per month (%),26 have been available for a long time in the areas of fertility and udder health. These key indicators help veterinarians to recognize and define health problems at herd level at an early stage and to work out measures for their improvement. Such key indicators are currently lacking in the field of claw health, hence making standardized identification of problem farms considerably more difficult. Considering the permanent negative influence of claw health problems on fertility, performance and overall animal welfare, it becomes clear how valuable claw health indicators will be in the future. The aim of this study was, therefore, to develop both primary and secondary indicators of claw health and to define corresponding limit values for Switzerland. Based on a literature search, several primary and secondary indicators were developed (1˚K: Herd problem Yes/No, 2˚K: Classification of the problem). These were discussed in an expert panel consisting of practicing veterinarians, staff of the Swiss bovine herd health service and university professors with regard to their possible practical implementation and relevance. Finally, 3 primary and 10 secondary indicators were judged to be suitable to assess a herd with regard to claw health. The primary key indicators were: proportion of cows leaving the herd due to a claw problem, proportion of lame cows of a herd, and proportion of cattle with at least one claw disease. The corresponding provisional limit values (exceeding the value = problem) for Switzerland were worked out by means of surveys among farmers, hoof trimmers, veterinary students and veterinarians. In addition, recommendations from the literature and current prevalence studies were used to adapt the defined limit values to the situation on Swiss farms. In the coming years, the claw health project «Gesunde Klauen - das Fundament für die Zukunft» will collect current prevalence values of claw diseases, and the limit values will then be adjusted and specified accordingly.

Introduction: Literature review on phyto-therapeutics for the treatment of bovine mastitis.

Introduction: Occasionally black-and-white spotted calves appear in Switzerland, which show a special fur only in the pigmented area. Otherwise these animals are normally developed. The white hairs are normal, but they appear relatively long and smooth, because the pigmented hairs are curly and thus appear shortened. In addition, the affected animals show a variable intensity of coat colour in the pigmented area. At birth affected calves often appear black, whereas older cattle show bright colours from reddish brown to grey. This is associated with a variable hair loss that increases during growth and is limited to the pigmented area of the coat. In adult cattle the coloured hairs appear rather smooth, but they are considerably shorter. This phenomenon of pigmentation-associated hypotrichosis was previously described internationally in various beef cattle populations. The affected cattle are often solid black and show only small white spots. Therefore, the loss of hair at the pigmented fur and most visibly at the pigmented tail is called rat-tail syndrome. Another name used is also crossbreeding-related congenital hypotrichosis. Molecular genetic investigations showed that the affected animals are heterozygous carriers for two variants in two different genes associated with pigmentation. The same genotype constellation was found in the 33 similarly affected cattle from Switzerland presented here. On one hand, they each carry a copy of the MC1R gene gain-of-function variant causing dominant black, as well as a copy of the recessively inherited red factor loss-of-function variant in the MC1R gene. On the other hand, all cases are heterozygous carriers for a variant in the PMEL gene that is associated with a semi-dominantly inherited form of colour dilution (dun or silver) in Simmental, Hereford and Highland Cattle. The introgression of Holstein cattle into the Original Simmental breed, which has been practised for decades, explains the occasional occurrence of this phenomenon in Swiss cattle breeding.

Introduction: This paper reviews the technique used for thoracic -ultrasonography of the bovine lower respiratory tract and the ultrasonographic findings in calves with -bronchopneumonia. Studies that compare the results of auscultation with those of ultrasonography and postmortem examination are included as are studies that examine the relationship between ultrasonographic findings and bacterial lung infection and prognosis. Lesions associated with bronchopneumonia, pleuropneumonia, pneumothorax and lung abscesses are -easily imaged ultrasonographically and characterised in calves.

Introduction: The modern technique of cattle hoof care was founded by E. Toussaint Raven in 1977. Environmental risk factors on cattle claws altered in the past 43 years. The change from free ranging to indoor housing, the intensified feeding and the breeding towards traits of high performance have significantly increased the mechanical and chemical stress on the claws. In modern free-stalls, dairy cows are required to walk on hard flooring to feed, drink and get milked. Good hoof health is a basic requirement for cattle welfare. Professional and regular hoof trimming is still considered the most effective measure to promote hoof health in dairy cattle. In order to meet today's requirements and to promote claw health, the Swiss Hoof Trimmers Association (SKV), in collaboration with the Vetsuisse faculties, Universities of Berne and Zurich, and the Bovine Health Service (RGD, Bern) developed and described the Swiss technique of functional claw trimming. The aim was to establish a consistent method, which takes into account the size and bodyweight of the modern cow, the anatomical and physiological characteristics of their claws and includes adaptations counteracting very relevant diseases such as digital dermatitis. The result is a workflow described and illustrated with coloured pictures and consisting of five individual steps based on the technique of E. Toussaint Raven, Additionally, the upcoming Swiss national resource project on long-term improvement of claw health is presented in some detail. The key point of this project is the electronic documentation of clinical findings by the trained professional claw trimmers. This data will later (i) be used to assess the foot health of Swiss cows, (ii) allow to determine the prevalence of foot diseases of cattle in Switzerland and (iii) to monitor the effect of the implementation of foot health concepts. The aim of this work is to combine the findings from science and the practical experience of hoof trimmers in one method, to standardize the applied hoof care in Switzerland and to adapt it to today's hoof health requirements.

Introduction: A manuscript from 1748 in Rhaeto-Romanic language is discussed. It's an unfinished translation of a publication in German language from 1715 which contains elements from the standard work on household and agriculture by Johannes Coler, 1645. By comparing the manuscript with 15 contemporary publications and manuscripts from Switzerland, textual similarities were found in three publications. The manuscript contains 62 therapy instructions for cattle diseases and 7 for pig diseases. Remedies of plant origin, food of animal origin and faeces are applied. Various interventions lead to painful injuries of the animals. Most therapies have to be considered as irrational.

Introduction: Diarrhea in calves is one of the most important cattle diseases in Switzerland. The diagnosis and treatment of calf diarrhea represent a major challenge. Single-celled Cryptosporidium parasites are the most prevalent causative agents of calf diarrhea besides rotavirus in the first weeks of life, and are responsible for about 50% of diarrheal cases. Cryptosporidium parvum has been described as a cause of diarrhea in one to three weeks old calves since the 1970s. Oral ingestion of persistent environmental oocysts results in severe diarrhea lasting four to six days and shedding of large numbers of infectious oocysts. A tiny amount of 10 oocysts is already sufficient to cause disease. Detailed knowledge about the epidemiology and virulence of the different C. parvum strains is still lacking. In addition, current diagnostic tests cannot reliably distinguish between non-pathogenic (e.g. C. bovis) and pathogenic Cryptosporidium species. Until now, no effective therapeutic drug or vaccine against calf cryptosporidiosis has been found. Water-borne epidemics and the zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium in immunodeficient patients are of great medical importance. The increasing number of cryptosporidiosis cases associated with high infant mortality in less industrialized and impoverished regions (including South-East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa) has intensified the research in recent years. The recent discoveries of new therapeutics against C. parvum may benefit calf medicine in the near future. This review article reports on these new developments, highlights calf cryptosporidiosis in Switzerland and draws attention to a new research project.
