Aim: To review the evidence of the existing literature on the impact of guided self‐determination across methodologies in different healthcare settings. Methods: An integrated five‐stage review. Results: Forty‐five eligible papers were included. Guided self‐determination was applied in full‐ or small‐scale, or combined with another intervention or approach in different healthcare settings handling, for example diabetes, stroke survivorship, schizophrenia, attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder and medical disorder, gynaecological and breast cancer, endometriosis, persons with chronic pain, persons in haemodialysis and intensive care survivors. The included studies covered 12 randomised trials, 26 qualitative and seven papers of different methodology. A statistically significant effect was found in three trials. Six main themes describe the qualitative findings across papers on patients: (1) Guided self‐determination reduces disease‐related loneliness, (2) Insight enables integration of life and disease, (3) Reflection sheets—appreciated but challenging tool to prompt insights and person‐specific knowledge, (4) New person‐specific knowledge enables person‐centred support, (5) Feeling seen and believed in a new and trusted relationship and (6) Exchange of knowledge enables the development of life skills. Four themes describe the healthcare professionals' experience: (1) Change of usual practice—a decision from above, (2) A new role—unlearning previous behaviour and need for support, (3) Reflection sheets as facilitators and barriers and (4) Discovering the benefits of changing to a person‐centred approach. Conclusion: Overall, guided self‐determination proved to have a great impact on patient important outcomes and was useful and well‐accepted by the majority of patients and healthcare professionals. Albeit guided self‐determination is not a 'one size fits all' method. Continuous training and supervision of professionals are a necessary mean when implementing guided self‐determination to enhance adoption and sustainability in clinical practice. Background: Social connection is a fundamental human need. Its absence can lead to loneliness and social isolation, adversely impacting health and well‐being. Given their regular contact and trusted relationships with older people, practitioners delivering community‐based primary care are well‐positioned to address this issue. However, their contribution to addressing loneliness and social isolation is unclear. Aim: This integrative review explores the contribution of the primary care workforce to interventions aimed at reducing loneliness and social isolation in community‐dwelling older people. Method: Using an integrative review method, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL and PubMed were searched for original research published between 2000 and 2022. Fourteen papers reporting 13 primary studies were appraised for methodological quality and included in the review. Data were extracted into a summary table and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Included studies came from over six countries. Internationally, primary care services have diverse structures, funding and workforces influencing their response to loneliness and social isolation. All but one intervention was multi‐component, with ten studies including a group‐based activity and three providing primarily individual‐level activities. Only six studies reported reductions in loneliness following the intervention. Three themes were identified: characteristics of interventions; implementation context, barriers and facilitators; and differing contributions of primary care practitioners in addressing loneliness and social isolation of older people. Conclusion: There is increasing demand and scope for primary care practitioners to assist lonely and socially isolated older people. It is important to understand how to equip and incentivise these practitioners to routinely identify, assess and respond to lonely and socially isolated older people despite varying implementation contexts. There is a need for further research that explores how the primary care team can be better utilised to deliver effective interventions that reduce the health impacts of loneliness and social isolation. Background: Wellness is a holistic, multidimensional, and process‐oriented property on a continuum. It has been used interchangeably with and is undifferentiated from concepts such as health and well‐being without an in‐depth clarification of its theoretical foundations and a reflection on its meaning. The concept of wellness is frequently used, but its definition remains unclear. Aim: To conceptually and theoretically explore the concept of wellness to contribute to a deeper understanding in caring science. Method: Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis was applied to the theoretical investigation of data from publications of international origins. The focus was on antecedents, attributes, consequences, surrogate and related terms, and contextual references. A literature search was performed through a manual review of reference lists and an online search in CINAHL and PubMed via EBSCO, and in ProQuest. Abstracts were examined to identify relevant studies for further review. The inclusion criteria were peer‐reviewed papers in English; papers published in scientific journals using the surrogate terms 'wellness', 'health', 'health care', and 'health care and wellness'; and papers discussing and/or defining the concept of wellness. Twenty‐six studies met the inclusion criteria. Results: Based on the findings from this concept analysis, a definition of wellness was developed: 'a holistic and multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well that goes beyond health'. Implications for nursing practice were correspondingly presented. Conclusion: Wellness is defined as a holistic and comprehensive multidimensional concept represented on a continuum of being well, that goes beyond health. It calls attention by applying the salutogenic perspective to health promotion in caring science. It is strongly related to individual lifestyle and health behaviour and is frequently used interchangeably with health and well‐being without an in‐depth clarification of its theoretical foundation. Personal health‐related resources are essential for women with breast cancer, as these help them to maintain their own health and well‐being during different phases of their illness. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify, describe and synthetise what personal health‐related resources have already been identified for this patient group. We carried out an integrative review to find papers that focused on personal health‐related resources for women with breast cancer aged 18–64 years. The search covered 1 January 2005 to 31 May 2021 and was carried out using the CINAHL, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases. It was limited to peer‐reviewed scientific papers with abstracts published in English and 23 papers met the inclusion criteria. The data were analysed using content analysis. Personal health‐related resources for women with breast cancer consisted of three different, but inherently interconnected, categories of personal strengths, person‐centred cancer care and social support from and involvement in their cultural community. Personal health‐related resources for women with breast cancer were multifaceted. Background: Men represent a growing proportion of unpaid family carers across Europe. Comparative studies have proposed male carers experience their caring role differently to females; men are less likely to avail of formal support services than women. Social ideas around masculinity have been linked to the help-seeking behaviours of male carers, as well as men's attitudes around accessing formal support. More understanding about this role from the perspective of male carers is required. Methods: The study followed a meta-ethnography process starting with a systematic literature search of five electronic databases. The methodological quality of the selected studies was evaluated using the Mc Master checklist. Using NVivo 12 software, primary data were analysed and themes throughout the papers were identi- fied. Results were synthesised as a meta-ethnography that retained direct quotes from the studies. Results: Two themes and five sub-themes were developed from the data. The first theme was 'Men's experiences of formal support' which contained sub-themes 'Reluctance to step back', 'A space to share emotions' and 'Education diminishes burden'. The second theme was 'Coping without Formal Support' with sub-themes 'Satisfied without help' and 'Duty prevents help seeking'. Conclusions: Fear of perceived failure and a loss of control in the caring relationship were key factors in men's low trust and dissatisfaction with available services. To engage more male carers, formal service providers should acknowledge men's wish to be seen as competent in the care role as well as their desire to stay involved in decision-making around care for their family member. Background: Nursing was established in Denmark as a scholarly tradition in the late nineteen eighties, and ethnography was a preferred method. No critical review has yet summarised accomplishments and gaps and pointing at directions for the future methodological development and research herein. Aim: This review critically examines the current state of the use of ethnographic methodology in the body of knowledge from Danish nursing scholars. Methods: We performed a systematic literature search in relevant databases from 2003 to 2016. The studies included were critically appraised by all authors for methodological robustness using the ten‐item instrument QARI from Joanna Briggs Institute. Results: Two hundred and eight studies met our inclusion criteria and 45 papers were included; the critical appraisal gave evidence of studies with certain robustness, except for the first question concerning the congruity between the papers philosophical perspective and methodology and the seventh question concerning reflections about the influence of the researcher on the study and vice versa. In most studies (n = 34), study aims and arguments for selecting ethnographic research are presented. Additionally, method sections in many studies illustrated that ethnographical methodology is nurtured by references such as Hammersley and Atkinson or Spradley. Conclusions: Evidence exists that Danish nursing scholars’ body of knowledge nurtures the ethnographic methodology mainly by the same few authors; however, whether this is an expression of a deliberate strategy or malnutrition in the form of lack of knowledge of other methodological options appears yet unanswered. This paper reports an analysis of the concept of person-centred care in the context of inpatient psychiatry. It has been suggested that person-centred care in inpatient psychiatry might differ from person-centred care in other contexts, indicating a need to clarify the concept in this specific context. Scholarly papers from health-related disciplines were identified following a systematic search of the electronic databases CINAHL, PUBMED and Psyc INFO, covering records indexed up until March 2014. An evolutionary approach to concept analysis was applied, integrating principles for data extraction and analysis in integrative reviews. The concept of person-centred care was defined as cultural, relational and recovery-oriented. It aspires to improve care and calls for a transformation of inpatient psychiatry. The concept is closely related to the concepts of recovery and interpersonal nursing. The result is described in terms of attributes, antecedents, consequences and related concepts. It is concluded that the further development of the concept needs to consider the contexts of the concept at both conceptual and praxis levels. Further research should explore the nature of and relationships between context, culture, care practice and outcomes in inpatient psychiatry from a perspective of person-centred care. Background: In Europe, cardiovascular disease is one of the predominant causes of mortality and morbidity among older people over 65 years. The occurrence of cardiovascular disease can have a negative impact on the quality of life of older patients and their families and family health overall. Assuming that illness is a family affair shaped by culture and health care systems, we explored European health care practices and interventions toward families of older patients with cardiovascular disease and heart failure. Aims: This paper aimed to determine the extent, range, and variety of practices and interventions in Europe directed to families of older patients and to identify knowledge gaps. Materials & Methods: A scoping review was conducted including studies published in Medline, CINHAL, or Cochrane library between 2009 and mid‐2020. Results: A total of 22 articles from 17 studies were included, showing diverse practices and interventions. The interventions targeted the family as a unit (six studies), dyads (five studies), patients alone, but assessed family members' reactions (five studies) or the family member primarily, but assessed the reaction of the patient (one study). Target outcomes were family caregiver burden; health‐related QoL; and perceived control in patients; and family functioning and changes in health behavior or knowledge in both, family members and patients. Most studies did not include an integral view of the family as the unit of care but rather had a disease‐centered approach. Discussion: This scoping review provides insight into a variety of healthcare practices towards families of older patients with cardiovascular disease in Europe. Clarifying underlying assumptions to involve families is needed. More studies with family‐focused approaches as integral models could lead to practices that improve families' well‐being. Background Whittemore and Knafl's updated description of methodological approach for integrative review was published in 2005. Since then, the five stages of the approach have been regularly used as a basic conceptual structure of the integrative reviews conducted by nursing researchers. However, this methodological approach is seldom examined from the perspective of how systematically and rigorously the stages are implemented in the published integrative reviews. Purpose To appraise the selected integrative reviews on the basis of the methodological approach according to the five stages published by Whittemore and Knafl in 2005. Design A literature review was used in this study. CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health), PubMed, OVID (Journals@Ovid) and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for integrative reviews published between 2002 and 2014. Papers were included if they used the methodological approach described by Whittemore and Knafl, were published in English and were focused on nursing education or nursing expertise. A total of 259 integrative review publications for potential inclusion were identified. Results Ten integrative reviews fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Findings from the studies were extracted and critically examined according to the five methodological stages. The reviews assessed followed the guidelines of the stated methodology approach to different extents. The stages of literature search, data evaluation and data analysis were fairly poorly formulated and only partially implemented in the studies included in the sample. The other two stages, problem identification and presentation, followed those described in the methodological approach quite well. Conclusion Increasing use of research in clinical practice is inevitable, and therefore, integrative reviews can play a greater role in developing evidence-based nursing practices. Scand J Caring Sci; 2012; 26; 404-413 Description of the behaviour of wandering in people with dementia living in nursing homes - a review of the literature Aim: The aim of the international literature review is the clarification of wandering as a behaviour of people with dementia in nursing homes. The term wandering often stigmatizes those affected. A clear definition and description of a phenomenon is an important basis for its operationalization. Data sources: Three electronic databases were used. The keywords 'wandering', 'challenging behaviour', 'dementia', 'assessment' and 'long term care' including all associated terms, both singly and in combination, were used to identify articles published in English and German up to 2007. Review methods: Abstracts of all papers found were screened and included if they focused on wandering and dementia in residential care settings. The content regarding definition and description of wandering from the 164 papers identified was summarized. As the aim of the study was to show the knowledge about the definition of wandering, a formal quality assessment of the studies was not conducted. Findings: The literature shows a great number of definitions, descriptions and taxonomies for the term wandering, many of them based on older studies. The term is diffuse and is difficult to differentiate from other forms of behaviour such as agitation. Most of the more recent scientific publications come from the USA and support theoretically and empirically based suggestions for a scientific definition of wandering. Conclusion: The debate about the behaviour of wandering shows clearly the importance of discussing intensively each type of behaviour associated with dementia. Challenging behaviour as such does not exist; it is a collective term for very different types of behaviour with various meanings. The same applies to wandering. At the moment there is no conclusive definition of wandering, there are no obvious causes for it and therefore no clear intervention recommendations; however, research has contributed towards defining and understanding this phenomenon. Background: Foetal development and the long‐term outcomes of the infant are influenced by the intrauterine environment. Strategies to enhance maternal health in pregnancy are needed to improve health outcomes for childbearing women and babies, advancing the well‐being of our general population. Aim: To synthesise the existing literature to determine the impacts of mindfulness and yoga practice upon birth outcomes and maternal health. Methods: An integrative literature review using Whittemore and Knafl's framework was undertaken in 2016–2017. Two search strategies included database peer‐reviewed journal articles and ancestry searching, that is exploring the reference list of relevant research articles. After screening and checking the eligibility, a total of 12 articles were included in this review. Data analysis involved coding, visual displays, thematic analysis and comparison, and conclusion drawing. Results: The results of this review identified a broad theme that mindfulness and yoga practice is associated with improved maternal mental health antenatally and postnatally. Subthemes have been presented under the central theme including the following: increased mindfulness correlates with decreased fear of childbirth; reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression; and supportive group settings found to be beneficial by pregnant women. Conclusion: The evidence presented in this review suggests that mindfulness and yoga practice are feasible and cost‐effective interventions to enhance maternal mental health, particularly for women experiencing mental health challenges. Background: A long‐term illness is stressful both for the person with the diagnosis and for his or her informal caregivers. Many people willingly assume the caregiving role, so it is important to understand why they stay in this role and how their motivation affects their health. Self‐determination theory (SDT) is a theory of human motivation that has been successfully applied in human research domains. To our knowledge, there is no literature review on the application of SDT in a caregiver context. A systematic review of the literature could improve the understanding of motivation in caregiver work and contribute to the utility of SDT. Aim: To describe and explore empirical studies of caregivers' motivation from the perspective of self‐determination theory. Methods: An integrative literature review according to Whittemore and Knafl was conducted with systematic repetitive searches in the MEDLINE, Scopus, PsychInfo, PsycNET, Chinal, Cochrane Library and EMBASE databases. The searches were performed from May through December 2018. The PRISMA diagram was used for study selection, and papers were assessed for quality based on the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Data analysis consisted of a four‐stage narrative analysis method. Result: Of 159 articles, 10 were eligible for inclusion. All studies considered satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs for competence, autonomy and relatedness as essential in predicting the quality of caregivers' motivation and thereby their well‐being. In this review, autonomous motivation was the most important determinant of caregivers' well‐being. Conclusions: Findings showed that SDT can be applied to identify, categorise, explain, predict, promote and support motivation among caregivers. This lends interesting support for SDT and promotes further study and application of the theory as a psychological approach to caregivers' health and health promotion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim This paper aimed to suggest possible answers to the question: Why do patients with COPD decline pulmonary rehabilitation ( PR)? Method The study is a metasynthesis inspired by Noblit of the existing qualitative research on the area. The data were collected during 2014. Six studies were found through a systematic literature search in relevant databases. In these six studies, 65 persons were identified as decliners of PR. Four themes were identified from these studies. Results The themes identified were as follows: the referral process, transport problems, perception of health and other obligations or priorities. The problems with the referral of patients relate to different areas: the referring health professional's conviction and commitment, and the patients' understanding of the referral. It seems that various transport problems cause decline, for example long distance to the PR centre or the expenses of getting back and forth. Perceptions of health cause decline. Decliners feel too sick to join PR or do not identify themselves as a sick person, and do not want undertake the 'patient role'. Other obligations or priorities such as work, family obligations and vacations are prioritised on behalf of PR causing decline. Conclusion The studies included show patients' rational accounts and reflections on declining PR. The included studies tend to describe accounts for deselection of PR in relation to the preferences and beliefs of the patients rather than including the social and economic variables framing the behaviour and choices of the patients. Background: Since the beginning of 2000, the primary healthcare services around the globe are challenged between demands of home care and number of staff delivering it. The delivery of healthcare needs new models to reduce the costs, patient's readmission and increase their possibilities to stay at home. Several paramedicine programmes have been developed to deliver home care as an integral part of the local healthcare system. The programmes varied in nature and the concept of Community Paramedicine (CP) has not been established, demanding clarity. The aim of this review was to identify and describe the core components of CP, and identify research gaps for the further study. Method: A scoping review was performed using five electronic databases: Medline; CINAHL; Academic Search Premier; PubMed and the Cochrane Library for the period 2005 – June 2018. The references of articles were checked, and papers were assessed against inclusion criteria and appraised for quality. Results: From 803 initial articles, 21 met the criteria and were included. Inductive content analysis was carried out. The four core components of Community Paramedicine emerged (a) Community engagement, (b) Multi‐agency collaboration, (c) Patient‐centred prevention and (d) Outcomes of programme: cost‐effectiveness and patients' experiences. Conclusion: The Community Paramedicine programmes are perceived to be promising. However, Community Paramedicine research data are lacking. Further research is required to understand whether this novel model of healthcare is reducing costs, improving health and enhancing people's experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Although narratives—including an ill person's life story, life situation and future perspectives—seem to lie at the core of rehabilitation and palliative care in Scandinavian countries, we lack a scope of how, when and where narrative methods are used. Such a scope could provide knowledge and inspiration on a practical as well as a policy level. The objective of this study is to explore the literature on the use of systematic, narrative methods in rehabilitative and palliative care for people with life‐threatening illness in Scandinavian countries. Method: We conducted a scoping review in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR) where applicable. We performed a systematic search in CINAHL, Medline, PsychInfo, SOCIndex and SveMed+using the search terms 'life threatening illness', 'narratives', 'rehabilitation', 'palliative care' and 'Scandinavia', followed by a search for grey literature. We found 42 records to be eligible for this scope and extracted the data via piloted extraction tables. Results: We identified 17 narrative methods and present findings concerning four themes: (1) a record of the narrative methods used; (2) an objective and theoretical framework for the narrative methods; (3) the content and form of the narrative methods; and (4) the significance of the narrative methods used. Conclusion: Narrative methods are used in systematic ways in rehabilitation and palliative care in Scandinavian countries and cover a wide variety of objectives, theoretical frames, forms and outcomes. Background: Stroke survivors might perceive their quality of life (QoL) as being affected even years after onset. The purpose of this review was to go through the literature to identify factors related to QoL for persons with stroke in China and Western countries for possible similarities and differences in their respective cultural views. Method: A narrative literature review was conducted on the papers identified by searching PubMed, EBSCO/CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Data that published up to November 2016. Factors predicting QoL after stroke were extracted, and comparisons were made between Chinese and Western studies respecting cultural aspects. Results: A total of 43 articles were included in this review, with 31 conducted in Western countries and 12 in China. Predictors of QoL included Demographic factors: age, gender, marital status, education level, socioeconomic status; Clinically related factors: severity of stroke, physical function, depression/anxiety, cognitive impairment, incontinence and other comorbidities; Environmental factors: residential status, social support, social participation; and Individual factors: coping strategies and self‐perception. Being married and resident at home might be associated with the perception of QoL differently between Chinese and Western survivors. Conclusions: Most predictors of QoL in stroke survivors were the same in China and the Western countries. However, their QoL might be predicted differently regarding to the individualistic and collectivistic cultural differences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this systematic review was to describe the association between adolescent sense of coherence ( SOC) and health and identify the future direction for research in this area. Systematic searches were conducted (2007-2014) in the PubMed, CINAHL, Psyc INFO and Cochrane electronic databases and carried out manual searches in three scientific journals. A total of 827 original papers were found and 23 were selected. Based on the results, adolescents' sense of coherence ( SOC) was related to health in terms of the adolescents' quality of life, health behaviour, mental health and family relationships by using 31 different health-related instruments. In conclusion, the use of the SOC approach for adolescents can provide a useful view of their health during this transition phase to adulthood. Due to the large variation in the additional instruments used, combining and comparing the results proved challenging. More comparative and longitudinal research is needed to increase understanding of adolescents' health in relation to SOC and develop services that support both elements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In Europe, cancer is one of the predominant causes of mortality and morbidity among older people aged over 65. A diagnosis of cancer can imply a negative impact on the quality of life of the older patients and their families. Despite research examining the impact of cancer on the family, it is unclear what kind of information is available about the types of clinical practice towards older patients with cancer and their families. The aim is to determine the extent, range and variety of research in Europe describing health practices towards families of older patients with cancer and to identify any existing gaps in knowledge. Methods: Scoping review. Results: A total of 12 articles were included, showing that family interventions are generally based on end‐of‐life care. Most studies used a qualitative approach and involved different types of family member as participants. Most studies were conducted in the UK. Conclusions: Review findings revealed limited knowledge about health practices in Europe towards families with an older patient with cancer. This review indicates a need to increase family‐focused research that examines health practices that meet the needs of families of older patients with cancer. Background In 2007, a literature review was undertaken of palliative care research from Sweden during the 1970s-2006, paving the way for a follow-up study to explore the recent developments. The aim was to systematically examine palliative care research from Sweden between 2007 and 2012, with special attention to methods, designs and research foci. Methods A literature review was undertaken. The databases Academic search elite, Age line, Ahmed, Cinahl, PsychInfo, PubMed, Scopus, Soc abstracts, Web of science and Libris were reviewed for Swedish palliative care research studies published from 2007 to 2012, applying the search criteria 'palliative care OR palliative medicine OR end-of-life care OR terminal care OR hospice care OR dying OR death'. Results A total of 263 papers met the inclusion criteria, indicating an increased volume of research compared to the 133 articles identified in the previous review. Common study foci were symptom assessment and management, experiences of illness and care planning. Targeting non-cancer-specific populations and utilisation of population-based register studies were identified as new features. There was continued domination of cross-sectional, qualitative and mono-disciplinary studies, not including ethnic minority groups, nonverbally communicable people or children <18 years of age. Conclusions The trend is that Swedish palliative care research has expanded in volume from 2007 to 2012 compared to during the 1970s to 2006, with increasing participation of non-cancer-specific populations. A domination of qualitative approaches and small, cross-sectional studies with few interventions is still characteristic. Still more strategies are needed to expand the knowledge development of palliative care to respond to demographical, epidemiological, therapeutic and healthcare structure changes. Aims Medication safety is a part of quality of care and patient safety. Old age brings many challenges for safe use of medication. In order to improve the prerequisites of medication safety in acute care of the elderly, we systematically reviewed studies to find out what kind of medication errors happen in elderly acute care. Methods Cinahl, Medline, Cochrane, JBI Connect+ databases and Finnish healthcare databases Medic and Ohtanen were used in the search. The search was performed using both MeSH terms and keywords by the option 'search all text'. The original keywords were pharmacy or drugs, medical error or deviation and their Finnish synonyms. These keywords were united to the terms elderly, nursing or acute care or intensive care. Studies published between 2001 and 2011 were chosen. Results Medication errors mentioned in the studies were associated with (i) nursing competence, (ii) prescription- and patient-related factors, (iii) medication work organisation and nursing process and (iv) safety culture. This paper presents several practical implications for improving medication safety in the acute care of the elderly. Limitations The grey literature was not included because the authors wanted to limit to the best-quality research. In some studies, elderly acute care was not their exact context or the elderly formed only a part of study population. This may have undermined some types of medication errors typical to elderly acute care. Conclusions To improve the prerequisites of medication, safety in acute care of the elderly management of the medication process should be improved. Also, cooperation within the medical team in making the medical care plans and checking out the medication of the elderly people should be improved. Aim: To analyse and synthesise the research that has investigated the experience of home in relation to home mechanical ventilation (HMV). Method: Systematic integrative review. Four electronic databases (CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus and ISI Web of Knowledge) were searched between January 2010 and April 2017 as well as reference lists of included studies. Quantitative and qualitative studies meeting the inclusion criteria were critically appraised. Study findings were inductively analysed and synthesised using the integrative approach. Results: Twenty‐one studies were included in the review. Two main themes emerged: home and at‐homeness and altered interpersonal relationships. The literature suggests that the technology alters the meaning of home through its structural and conceptual reconfiguration. Paradoxically, the space is experienced as both a home and a workplace which creates tensions and ambiguities for HMV users/families and care workers. HMV users and their families attempt to recreate a sense of home and identity while gaining control over space and decision‐making. Nevertheless, the home is seen as the preferred place to live and close bonds can develop between the different actors. Conclusions: The literature suggests that the transformation of the meaning of home by the presence of technology and workers poses challenges that are often under‐recognised. Healthcare professionals and personal care assistants need preparation for the complexities of working in the home setting in addition to clinical aspects of caregiving. Background: Mental illness, such as depression, anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and different addictive diseases, has increased among young adults over the last decade. Mental illness is associated with distress and problems functioning in social activities. Healthcare centres, that is, primary care, serve as the first point of contact with healthcare professionals for those young adults and provide outpatient medical and nursing care covering both physical and mental illness. Objective: To explore experiences of primary care among young adults with mental illness. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted that followed the method of Bettany–Saltikov and McSherry. A keyword search was performed in various databases, and after a quality assessment 23 articles were included in the review. Results: Young adults' experiences from primary care are described in four categories – Facing difficulties to accept help, relational preconditions, structural and organisational hindrances and satisfaction with youth‐focused mental health interventions. Young adults with mental illness experience many difficulties in accessing and receiving proper help from primary care. Further, they did not believe in recovery from mental illness, and they also expressed a lack of mental health literacy. Conclusion: While being the first contact with healthcare professionals, primary care needs to adjust its services to address the growing group of young adults suffering from mental illness. It is necessary to provide tailored guidelines and interventions in primary care for young adults with mental illness, and the Tidal Model may improve the contacts with young adults in primary care. Background: People living in nursing homes face the risk of visiting the emergency department (ED). Outreach services are developing to prevent unnecessary transfers to ED. Aims: We aim to assess the performance of acute care services provided to people living in nursing homes or long‐term homecare, focusing on ED transfer prevention, safety, cost‐effectiveness and experiences. Materials & Methods: This review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA). Studies were eligible for inclusion if they were peer‐reviewed and examined acute outreach services dedicated to delivering care to people in nursing homes or long‐term homecare. The service models could also have preventive components. The databases searched were Scopus and CINAHL. In addition, Robins‐I and SIGN checklists were used. The primary outcomes of prevented ED transfers or hospitalisations and the composite outcome of adverse events (mortality/Emergency Medical Service or ED visit after outreach service contact related to the same clinical condition) were graded with GRADE. Results: Fifteen relevant original studies were found—all were observational and focused on nursing homes. The certainty of evidence for acute outreach services with preventive components to prevent ED transfers or hospitalisations was low. Stakeholders were satisfied with these services. The certainty of evidence for solely acute outreach services to prevent ED transfers or hospitalisations was very low and inconclusive. Reporting of adverse events was inconsistent, certainty of evidence for adverse events was low. Conclusion: Published data might support adopting acute outreach services with preventive components for people living in nursing homes to reduce ED transfers, hospitalisations and possibly costs. If an outreach service is started, it is recommended that a cluster‐randomised or quasi‐experimental research design be incorporated to assess the effectiveness and safety of the service. Background Exergames have the potential to promote physical activity among children and adolescents. They also have other important benefits, but knowledge about other than the physical effects of exergaming remains thin. Aim To report the findings of a review of ten studies on the nonphysical effects of exergames on child and adolescent well-being. Data Sources A broad search strategy was employed to identify relevant studies in CINAHL Ebsco Host, Ovid MEDLINE, Psycinfo ProQuest, Eric ProQuest, Scopus and Cochrane Library. The search timeframe was from January 2004 to April 2015. Review Methods A comprehensive systematic review without meta-analysis was conducted on 10 quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods intervention studies. The quality of these studies was assessed following the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute. The data were analysed using a narrative synthesis approach. Results Exergaming was found to have some positive effects on self-concept, situational interest and motivation, enjoyment, psychological and social well-being, symptomatology and different learning experiences. However, two studies reported no effect on self-efficacy, and one study showed no intervention effect on self-esteem. The only follow-up study indicated that the enjoyment effect lasted for a few months. Conclusion Most of the studies reviewed found that exergaming had positive effects. Background: Global health challenges demand the optimal use of nurses' professional competence and capability. Competencies related to the roles of advanced practice nurses have been developed, but research on these nurses' capabilities remains limited. Aim: To summarise and compare the literature on the capabilities of advanced practice nurses and the dimensions of these capabilities. Methods: We carried out a mixed methods systematic review, using CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus to search literature published between 1998 and 2021. The quality of the selected articles was evaluated with the JBI Critical Appraisal Tools. We employed abductive content analysis, including deductive and inductive analysis. The reporting was guided by the standards of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis Statement. Results: Eleven articles out of 357 met the inclusion criteria. We identified all five dimensions of Hase and Davis's (1999) capability framework: can apply competencies in familiar as well as unfamiliar situations, is creative, has a high degree of self‐efficacy, knows how to learn, and works well in teams. Additionally, we found a new dimension of capability: identifies factors affecting the scope of practice. Limitations: This mixed methods systematic review was conducted about a little‐studied topic. Because country‐specific differences exist and consensus on advanced practice nursing roles is lacking, the concept of advanced practice nurse capabilities cannot be directly generalised. Conclusions: Capability is a requirement and a necessity in the performance of advanced practice nurses. Identifying and defining the dimensions of advanced practice nurses' capabilities will lead the way in developing the roles, education, and capability assessments of advanced practice nurses. Identification of advanced practice nurses' capability will facilitate role understanding, visibility, and implementation in health care services. Background: There is a significantly higher number of people experiencing severe levels of suicidal thoughts compared to that of suicidal deaths and suicide attempts. In suicide prevention research, there is a shift towards greater emphasis on people's experiences of living with suicidal thoughts. This can expand the existing evidence base, which is dominated by a biomedical approach. The aim of this review was to summarise and disseminate existing research on the lived experiences of living with suicidal thoughts. Methods: A scoping review by Arksey & O'Malley consisting of six stages: (1) formulating the research question, (2) identifying relevant studies, (3) selecting studies, (4) mapping data, (5) summarising the results and (6) consulting stakeholders. PubMed, PsycINFO and CINAHL were searched for studies in English, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. Peer‐reviewed articles examining people's experiences of living with suicidal thoughts using qualitative methods were included. The search was supplemented with a citation pearl search in the Web of Science database. Twenty‐eight studies were included. Results: The findings were organised under two thematic headings: (a) the significance of social connections and (b) a loss of the personal self. Conclusion: There is a need for further qualitative research of people's experiences of living with suicidal thoughts from an everyday life perspective. Awareness about social connections and attachment in mental health prevention and governance is crucial. Trauma‐informed care could be a useful approach to prevent suicidal thoughts as the review found that many participants had traumatic experiences in both childhood and adulthood. Background: Stress‐related illness is increasing and is a common cause of sick leave. Spending time in nature have a positive effect on health and well‐being for instance by reducing stress. Specific programmes with nature‐based interventions (NBI) with the intention to involve people in activities in a supportive natural environment have been developed for people with stress‐related illness. Aim: To identify and summarise scientific studies of NBIs to promote health for people with stress‐related illness. Method: The design used in this study is integrative literature review. Scientific studies focusing on any type of NBI for people with stress‐related illness were sought in Cinahl, PubMed, PsycInfo, AMED and Scopus. In total, 25 studies using both qualitative and quantitative designs were included in the review. Result: The reviewed studies focused on garden or forest interventions. In the majority of the studies, NBIs were performed in groups, including individual activities, and the length of programmes varied. Interventions in natural environments have unique qualities for individualised, meaningful activities and interactions with others in a non‐demanding atmosphere. NBIs offer restoration that reduces stress, improves health and well‐being and strengthen self‐efficacy and work ability. Connectedness with nature support existential reflections and people with stress‐related illness can achieve balance in everyday life. Conclusion: In conclusion, NBIs may have advantages to promote health for people with stress‐related illness and should therefore be considered as an alternative to those affected. Background: Coronary artery bypass grafting surgery and aortic valve replacement surgery are essential treatment options for people suffering from angina pectoris or aortic valve disease. Surgery aims to prolong life expectancy, improve quality of life, and facilitate participation in society for the individuals afflicted. The aim of this review was to explore the literature on work participation in patients following coronary artery bypass grafting or aortic valve replacement surgery, and to identify demographic and clinical characteristics associated with returning to work. Methods: A scoping review framework of Arksey and O'Malley was chosen. Four electronic databases: Medline, CINAHL, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched for studies in English, Swedish, Danish or Norwegian between January 1988 and January 2020. A blinded selection of articles was performed. The data were then charted and summarized by descriptive numerical analyses and categorized into themes. Results: Forty‐five out of 432 articles were included in the final full‐text analysis. Absence from work following coronary artery bypass graft grafting or aortic valve replacement surgery lasted on average 30 weeks, whereas 34% of the patients never returned to work. Being female, suffering from pre‐existing depression, having limited secondary education, or low income were associated with decreased return to work rates. Previous employment was a decisive factor for returning to work after surgery. Data on return to work after aortic valve replacement were scarce. Conclusions: A significant number of patients never return to work following coronary artery bypass grafting or aortic valve surgery, and the time interval until work return is longer than expected. Failure to resume work represents a threat to the patients' finances and quality of life. Nurses are in a unique position to assess work‐related issues and have an active part in the multi‐disciplinary facilitation of tailored occupational counselling after cardiac surgery. Background: Parents who experience involuntary pregnancy loss encounter nurses and midwives when requiring care. But the environment in which this attention is provided turns it into a stressful and challenging event that favours the concealment of emotions. Literature supports the development of compassion in nurses and midwives who tend to parents who experience pregnancy losses. Aim: To synthesise the emotional experiences of midwives and nurses when caring for parents who have suffered an involuntary pregnancy loss. Method: This is a synthesis of qualitative studies following Noblit and Hare's interpretive meta‐ethnography. Eleven studies met the research objective and inclusion criteria. Results: An overarching metaphor, 'Unravelling the grief of loss', accompanied by four major themes provided interpretive explanations to the experiences of midwives and nurses in caring for involuntary pregnancy losses: 'Pulling the thread' – looking for the meaning of loss; 'Yarn entanglement degree' – determinants for grief expression; 'Detangling tools' – focusing on the loss; and 'Fraying the thread' – moving away from the loss. Discussion: The provision of whole care to these parents requires midwifery and nursing training and continued education. Furthermore, the organisational culture should prioritise the health and well‐being of midwives and nurses. Conclusion: Midwives and nurses encounter the parents' loss in care and personally in various ways and give meaning to the loss conditioned by personal and professional determinants. Background: Inpatients have a high need for protein‐energy intake because of increased physical stress metabolism due to illnesses. Protein‐energy undernutrition in older patients increases the risk of complications such as falls, pressure ulcers and even death. An overview of effective interventions addressing this complex issue of malnutrition in older people is missing. Aims: To give an overview of effective interventions to optimise nutrition in older people in hospitals and long‐term care. Design: An umbrella review, according to the Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA statement, was conducted in April 2020. Methods: A systematic search of publications from 2010 until 2020 was conducted in CINAHL, PubMed and Cochrane Database. Included were studies reporting nutrition interventions that involved nurses or the interprofessional team in optimising older hospitalised people's nutrition. Excluded were studies investigating the effects of parenteral nutrition, certain food supplements or tube feeding and research from intensive, community or palliative care. Components of interventions were classified according to the intervention Nutrition management: Patients' assistance, patients' instruction, foodservice, environment for meals and nutrient‐dense snacks. Findings: Included were 13 reviews from 19 countries of the continents Asia, Australia, Europe and North America from hospitals and long‐term care settings. An interprofessional food promoting culture, including staff training as part of a multi‐component measure, has shown to be a successful element in implementing activities of Nutrition Management. Conclusion: Several studies synthesised that optimising nutrition in older people in hospitals and long‐term care is achievable. Interventions were effective if—on a meta‐level—staff training was addressed as part of a multi‐component measure to reach an interprofessional food promoting culture. Implications for practice: Interventions to optimise older people's nutrition have to consider an interprofessional food promoting culture, including staff training about the importance of nutrition, patients' assistance and an appropriate environment for meals. Aims: (1) To identify and analyse the conceptual framework and operationalise the concept of communication issues related to medication incidents in hospital to facilitate the development of a future tool for measuring frequencies of the communication issues. (2) To determine how the concept is distinct from related concepts. Design: Concept analysis. Data sources: Twenty‐three articles from seven scientific databases covering the years 2010–2020 and two official documents. Methods: Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was used. That was started by a systematised literature review on 2 November 2020 using specified criteria. Two authors evaluated articles' quality by Joanna Brigg's Institute's criteria. Literature review results were analysed deductive‐inductively; conceptual framework was developed and concept defined presenting case scenarios. EQUATOR's standards were used in study reporting. Results: A conceptual framework and the concept of 'communication related to medication incidents in hospitals' were defined, comprising six main attribute categories: (1) communication dyads involved in communication, (2) patients' or professionals' individual issues, (3) institutional, (4) contextual and process issues, (5) communication concerning medication prescriptions and (6) qualitative characteristics of communication. The categories consisted of 128 quantitatively measurable and 10 qualitative attributes describing communication issues. The concept is distinct from related concepts by collating fragmented communication issues into the same concept. Conclusion: The 128‐item conceptual framework and the concept of communication related to medication incidents in hospitals were defined, as there was not one. The concept assembled parts of previous theories and fragmented information to one entity. The concept needs further condensing and validation to develop a tool for measuring communication issues. Impact on medication safety: The conceptual framework can be used in practice and education as indicative rationale for reflection of current communication issues. Background: Dementia among older adults is receiving increase attention due to its neurodegenerative pathologies and poses a significant challenge for healthcare services systems. Caring for older adults with dementia is frequently challenging. This integrative review appraised and synthesised the existing literature describing the nursing care given to older adults with dementia. Methods: An integrative review was used using six electronic databases (CINAHL, Medline, Science direct‐Elsevier, Proquest, Pubmed and Web of Science). The search terms that were included in various combinations using mesh terms were as follows: nurse* OR nursing staff* AND caring OR care OR caring behavior OR affectionate OR compassionate AND older person* OR aging* OR elder* OR geriatric patient* OR older adult* OR gerontology* OR aged* OR old age. A standardised review by Kmet et al. instrument was utilised for appraising the quality of selected 13 articles. Results: The results were presented based on the two major themes: challenges in providing care and identifying and managing older adults' difficult behaviours. Conclusion: The findings of an integrative review can be used as a foundation for formulating recommendations for how dementia care by nurses can be improved and highlighting where policy development and further research are needed. Background: Nurses are responsible for nursing care and their expertise is crucial for quality of care. One factor important to successful delivery of evidence‐based care is availability of staff with the expertise to support their colleagues in this endeavour. RN/PhDs versed in scientific research with a thorough knowledge of their disciplines have the potential to help narrow the gap between theory and practice. The roles and functions of RN/PhDs involved in clinical care have not yet been well defined. Aim: To explore publications concerning clinical contributions from registered nurses who hold a PhD (RN/PhDs) regarding impact on quality and improvement of care. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted and qualitative content analysis was applied to the data obtained from the included studies. Findings: The leadership role is considered essential for RN/PhDs, where the focus is on the pursuit of evidence‐based practice and the improvement of nursing practices. The opportunity to combine the clinical and academic aspects of nursing is considered crucial in order for RN/PhDs to influence and improve care, yet few such positions are currently available. RN/PhDs cited limited career opportunities as one important reason for not combining clinical and academic work. Conclusions: In order for nursing practice to reach full potential, clinical positions with clearly defined job descriptions for RN/PhDs are needed. To fully leverage their expertise, it is important to allocate sufficient time to conduct relevant research, as well as to support colleagues and students in the improvement of clinical practice. Background: Simulation activities are valuable for nursing education and provide an experimental learning opportunity. However, simulation scenarios have focused on nursing education of traditional medical specialities, and limited research exists on simulation for community or public health nursing education. Aims: This study aimed to explore the methods that are being used to increase the knowledge and skills of nursing students who work for public health nursing and the evidence about the effectiveness of simulation practices in public or community health nursing. Methods: In this systematic review, a combination of keywords was selected from Medical Subject Headings based on which eight studies were found across Science Direct, Web of Science, EBSCO, Cochrane and PubMed databases between June 2018 and September 2018. Findings: A total of eight studies were included in the mixed-methods systematic review (two qualitative, two mixed-methods and four quantitative studies). The students were satisfied with public health nursing simulation practices and had significant gains in the following activities: active learning, collaboration, critical thinking, teamwork, evaluating family and individual together, and practical communication skills. Conclusion: The results of this review revealed that the experiences and gains of the nurses that they gain during their education process were essential, the numbers of simulation practices in the field of public health nursing were minimal, and they should be improved qualitatively. Background: Availability of genetic testing in neurodegenerative disorders has developed rapidly. This growing ability is providing specific genetic information to individuals and, in turn, their families, raising ethical concerns. However, family members' perspective is a seldom-studied phenomenon. Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to describe the ethical aspect of genetic testing in neurodegenerative diseases from the perspective of at-risk family members. Method: A systematic review of data was performed in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The data search was conducted using the CINAHL, PubMed and Scopus databases to identify original peer-reviewed studies published between January 2009 and April 2019. A total of 24 articles were selected. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Findings: On the basis of the analysis, four central ethical implications were identified: (i) decision-making in genetic testing as a dilemma: balance between autonomy and responsibility, (ii) the individual's right to make a voluntary and informed decision for genetic testing, (iii) conflicting emotions after knowing one's genetic status and (iv) privacy and confidentiality of genetic information: the fear of genetic discrimination and stigma. Conclusions: The findings of this review increase understanding about the central ethical implications of genetic testing in neurodegenerative diseases from the perspective of family members, and identify and underline outstanding needs for further research. Background: This literature study describes caring science research on human dignity in different clinical practice. We already know a good deal about human dignity in nursing care but how do patients, nurses, healthcare professionals and next of kin experience human dignity in clinical practice? Aim: To summarise studies on human dignity to gain a deeper understanding of how it can be achieved in caring science research and to gain a broader understanding of the differences and similarities across caring contexts. The aim was also to gain a broader understanding of the differences and similarities of human dignity across different clinical practice. Method: The literature review re-analysed 28 empirical studies on human dignity are experienced from acute, psychiatric, elderly and rehabilitation care. The data analysis strategy was conducted in a systematic and critical way and consisted of a five-step method. Result: Maintaining dignity was described when caregivers had the time and the will to see and listen to patient and had the courage to see what they did not want to see, allowing their inner powers to act with the purpose of doing good. In elderly care, it was important that elderly persons are involved as members of society and experience respect, confidence, security and charity. Indignity was described when caregivers did not allow patients to have their will and when they had unethical attitudes, ignoring patients and creating powerlessness. The feeling of being abandoned and not being taken seriously are also described in elderly care. Conclusion: Findings show how caregivers fulfil their ethical responsibility by seeing, listening and being a part of the time and place. The will to do good includes the courage to preserve dignity and human value rests on being created as a human being. Background: Conceptual clarity for the term patient engagement is growing. However, there is variability in patient engagement in healthcare, which could be due to the absence of models to guide practice or a myriad of organisational, nurse and patient factors. The recently developed 'Interactive Care Model' provides guidance on how to genuinely promote individualised patient engagement. An understanding of how to action this model in nursing is required. Aims: The aim of this scoping review was to examine actions in the published scientific literature that align with the Interactive Care Model, in the context of nursing care of hospitalised patients. Data sources: In 2018, searches of CINAHL, Cochrane Library, MEDLINE and PsycInfo were undertaken, for literature published between 2008 and 2018. This was followed by citation tracking. Review methods: Two researchers screened and selected studies using prespecified criteria. Data were charted into a pre‐established tool and collated and summarised using numerical summaries and deductive content analysis. For content analysis, categories were generated from the 'Interactive Care Model'. Findings: Forty‐three studies were included in the review, 33 noninterventional and 10 interventional studies. Publications on the topic are increasing in number over time, with most conducted in Europe with patient or nurse participants. Forty‐two actions were found in the literature that aligned with the 'Interactive Care Model'. The actions uncovered differed between intervention and noninterventional studies; in interventional studies actions were formalised. Conclusions: This review provides an overview of actions that promote patient engagement and could inform implementation of the Interactive Care Model and the design and testing of patient engagement interventions to support the model. There are opportunities to explore latter phases of the Interactive Care Model to foster patient engagement in self‐management and to motivate patients' management of healthcare beyond hospitalisation. Background: The number of older adults with depression has increased in recent years. In relation to this, conducting a narrative review helps provide a better understanding of the adaptive functioning of depressed older adults and the significance of interventions in reducing depression. This narrative review investigates the nurses' management of depressed older adult patients. It also presents a detailed investigation of the barriers preventing nurses from successfully implementing nursing care for older adults. Methods: A narrative literature review was performed on four electronic databases, namely, (i) Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, (ii) Pubmed, (iii) PsycINFO and (iv) Taylor and Francis. English language and peer‐reviewed journal articles were included. Results: A total of 19 articles were selected for the review, and four main themes were generated: (i) the challenges in implementing depression care management, (ii) the role of social support in depression treatment, (iii) the pharmacological management approach and (iv) the health care management process. Conclusion: Nurses experience several challenges in implementing depression care management. The role of social support in the treatment of depression, pharmacological management and different types of health care management strategies all provide solutions for depressed older adults. The review findings provide insights for improving health care nursing services for depressed older adults and reducing the negative health outcomes in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Informal carers of people with dementia report having unmet needs for support and few supportive interventions have been shown to be effective. There is a need to develop needs assessment instruments and supportive interventions with a holistic and person‐centred approach to meet the various and complex needs of carers. The aim of this study was to provide an overview of carers' support needs when caring for people with dementia with the objectives to map and synthesise knowledge on key concepts of carers' support needs. Methods: A scoping review methodology was used. A literature search was conducted in PsycINFO, CINAHL, PubMed and EMBASE between January 2007 and October 2019. Three authors independently selected articles meeting the inclusion criteria, and data were extracted using a matrix developed for that purpose. Inductive content analysis was used to synthesise key concepts of carers' support needs. Results: The search identified 2748 articles after removing duplicates, and 122 articles were included in the mapping of carers' support needs. Synthesising carers' support needs indicated that the full extent of support needs emerges in the interaction between the carer and the person cared for and that it is possible to categorise support needs into four key concepts related to: 1) the carer as a person, 2) managing being a carer, 3) providing care, and 4) knowledge of dementia. Conclusion: The findings of this study help to map a framework describing carers' support needs that may guide the development of future needs assessment instruments and supportive interventions. Background: Registered Nurses are expected to have acquired knowledge about the fundamental concepts within nursing science throughout their training and clinical work. However, the terminology and the concept of caring are debated; therefore, there is a need for a continuous critical investigation of scientific concepts within the area of nursing. Objectives: To illuminate nurses' perception about the meaning of the scientific concept of caring. Design: A qualitative systematic literature search was performed that subsequently underwent a descriptive meta‐synthesis in line with Deborah Finfgeld's descriptive meta‐synthesis methodology. Data sources/review method: Scientific articles published between 1 January 2003 and 25 January 2018 were identified and retrieved from CINAHL and PubMed. Each included study was assessed and critically appraised. Data were extracted, analysed and coded into categories resulting in four different themes in accordance with descriptive meta‐synthesis. Results: Four themes emerged in the analysis: 'To be', 'To want', 'To be able to' and 'To do'. These comprise different aspects within physical and metaphysical dimensions where simultaneously interact and influence each other. Conclusion: There are central elements to the practice of caring that are separated in their simplicity but at the same time coherent, where no part can exist without the others in the practice of caring. There are shortcomings concerning current nursing theories, nursing philosophies and organisational documents related to varied aspects based on what is included in the practice of caring. Aim: To provide increased understanding about how work applicants, employment specialists, social workers in the welfare service and clinicians in mental healthcare service experience participating in individual placement and support (IPS). Methods: We searched in several databases and identified 17 studies published from 2007 to 2017 in Sweden, USA, Canada, UK, Australia and Denmark, and applied meta‐ethnographic reinterpretation and synthesis. Results: The employment specialists followed the core ideas of IPS, where work is seen as a way to recover. They saw the work applicants' preferences and needs as important for health and well‐being, and crucial for successful work rehabilitation. In order to reach these goals, they offered a personal relationship to the work applicants. Work applicants clearly appreciated this personalised recovery‐oriented mindset. Furthermore, work applicants needed the employment specialists as culture brokers between health‐related questions and the expectations met in the labour market. Social workers lacked resources to such personalised support, and they were under demand of welfare regulations made for a 'train then place' model, which conflicts with the view that work leads to recovery as IPS sees it in their 'place then train' model. The scarce knowledge of the clinicians' experiences in the present study suggests that they are sceptical to work as a way to recover, which is in conflict with IPS. Conclusions: The work applicants highlighted the significance of the individualised support they received. Social workers and some clinicians found it difficult to provide this important personalised support towards work. Conflicting mindsets between the traditional gradual work rehabilitation paradigm and the IPS approach as a way of recovering might explain these frustrations and distance. Recommendations for practice. An improvement of IPS may depend on more cooperation based on an acceptance of the recovery‐oriented mindset, which for some will mean an acceptance of new knowledge. Background: Burn is a life‐threatening injury that requires long‐term treatment and concomitant hospital stay. Relevant clinical studies in burns have been accomplished and published in the literature. However, none of these studies reported the concept analysis of burn care in nursing. Therefore, analysing the concept of burn care acts as an imperative strategy to provide comprehensive management of burn injury. Objective: The study aims to describe the concept of burn care in nursing. Method: Walker and Avant's method (2013) was used to achieve the objective of the study. Findings: A model of burn care in nursing was generated that consists of assessment and diagnosis, intervention and evaluation. In addition, the biopsychosocial model developed by George L. Engel (1977) was also integrated to examine how these aspects play a significant role in burn care. Conclusion: Implementing the concept of burn care will improve the quality of nursing care, cosmetic outcomes and vice versa, reduce the comorbidities on burn injury. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: The aim of this review was to identify methods for measuring Registered Nurses' medication administration skills and to describe these skills. Design: A systematic literature review. Data sources: The CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, PsycInfo and Medic databases were searched for articles from the period 2007–2018. Review methods: Two researchers independently selected the articles and evaluated their quality using the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute study quality assessment tools. The data were analysed using content analysis. Results: A total of 727 studies were identified of which 22 studies were included in this review. A total of six different measurement methods were identified: questionnaire or survey, observation, knowledge test or exam, focus group interviews, chart reviews and voluntarily reported errors. Different methods provided different information on medication administration skills. Medication administration skills were classified under nine areas: (1) safe ordering, handling, storing and discarding of medications, (2) preparing of medications, (3) the administration of medications to patients, (4) documentation, (5) evaluation and assessment of medication‐related issues, (6) drug calculation skills, (7) cooperation with other professionals and (8) with the patients and (9) reporting of medication information. The results demonstrated that there are many areas that need to be improved to increase medication safety. Conclusions: Medication administration includes many different phases, as a result of which nurses need to have many various skills to cope with medication administration as required by their profession. This review shows that nurses' medication administration skills need to be developed, and special attention should be paid to the preparation and administration phases. It is important to regularly utilise different teaching strategies and verify nurses' medication competence. As each research method has different limitations, it is vital that further studies combine different methods to form a comprehensive picture of nurses' medication administration skills. Background: The evolvement of family‐centred care has been an ongoing process since the Platt Report 1959. Family‐centred care has become the modern working model in paediatrics and obstetrics. Parental participation is central to family‐centred care. Whether it is applied consistently remains to be concluded. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe the family experiences of being present during paediatric resuscitation and invasive procedures. Method: The design used in this study is an integrative review by Whittemore & Knafl. Databases PubMed and CINAHL were searched for primary research concerning the parental experiences of participating in paediatric resuscitation and invasive procedures. Eighteen studies were included in the study. A quality assessment tool was applied. Findings: A pro‐parental presence was the results of 17 of the 18 included studies. Six common themes were found: 'Being there', 'Calming child', 'Calming parent', 'Having the right', 'Do it again' and 'Seeing is believing'. Conclusion: Including family in resuscitation and invasive procedures requires openness as a working model and demands organisational changes and the updating of guidelines. The inseparability of parent–child is attachment theory practised, an innate quality of being a child as well as a parent. Recommendations are to have a facilitator present during resuscitation and invasive procedures to alleviate stress on everyone's part, enabling family participation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although illness perceptions have significant implications for psychological morbidity in those diagnosed with a physical illness, the strength of this relationship in their family members remains understudied. The validity of findings is dependent on the quality of the instruments used; therefore, it is essential that psychometrically robust measures of illness perceptions are available. The purpose of this systematic review was to identify, assess and compare the psychometric properties of instruments designed to measure illness perceptions in family members of individuals with chronic physical illnesses. A systematic search was conducted using MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus and PsycINFO databases, and supplemented with forward and backward searches. Studies were included in the review if they described the development, adaptation or psychometric evaluation of an instrument designed to measure illness perceptions in family members of an individual with a chronic physical illness. The methodological quality of included studies was assessed using the COSMIN Risk of Bias checklist. The psychometric quality of instruments was evaluated using published quality assessment criteria. Eleven articles describing nine different instruments were included in the review. Almost all instruments were designed for parents of a child with a chronic illness. There was wide variation in the quality of methods used to develop, adapt or evaluate the instruments, and missing information restricted the evaluation of psychometric properties. Further validation is needed for all instruments before meaningful conclusions can be drawn. Findings indicate that measurement of illness perceptions in children or siblings of an individual with a chronic physical illness has been largely ignored. Background: Nurses play a crucial role in Kangaroo Mother Care practice, but their application in specific policies and practices involves challenges. A comprehensive literature review is needed to improve understanding of specific barriers that are most relevant to nurses and the improvement of this practice. This review investigates nurses' barriers in implementing Kangaroo Mother Care, in order to illustrate directions for future research. Methods: This study was based on integrative review method and exploring nurses' barriers in implementing Kangaroo Mother Care, strategies to reduce its barriers. CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Database, PubMed and Science Direct Taylor & Francis databases were searched for the following: (i) studies with no year restrictions, (ii) peer‐reviewed journal articles, (iii) original research and (iv) articles written in English. Each article was appraised for methodological validity review using critical appraisal checklist. Results: The search revealed 19 articles from diverse countries. Four main themes were generated from the synthesis of the findings: (i) barriers related to nurses' perspective and emotion towards KMC, (ii) healthcare institution barriers towards KMC, (iii) barriers related to parental experience in providing KMC and (iv) strategy to improve KMC implementation. Conclusions: Nurses experience several barriers in successfully implementing KMC in healthcare settings. This review reported strategies to reduce KMC barriers and to improve its utilisation in healthcare settings. Hospitals should establish adequate manpower, clear guidelines, sufficient supplies and equipment, capacity building among staff and proper Kangaroo Mother Care information dissemination for patients. Aims: Nursing faculty members play a pivotal role in the achievement of nursing students' learning outcomes. A broader understanding of what constitutes effective teaching is essential in order to ensure that effective learning takes place in the clinical area. This review sought to identify the most and least effective nursing faculty characteristics as perceived by nursing students. Methods: An integrative review of the literature was undertaken. Studies were sourced from the following electronic databases: PsycINFO, PubMed Central, CINAHL, Medline and Scopus. An electronic search of relevant studies published between 2001 and 2017 was conducted using the following search terms: 'nursing', 'students', 'nurse faculty', 'nurse tutor', 'nurse educator', 'effective', 'clinical education', 'effectiveness', 'clinical instructor', 'nurse instructor', 'teaching behaviour', and 'teaching characteristics'. Findings: Twenty‐nine articles met the inclusion criteria. This review revealed that nursing students value nursing faculty's competence and interpersonal skills over their personality traits. Furthermore, the review highlighted that there exists a lack of studies that examine individual factors, which may influence nursing students' choice of teaching behaviours. Future studies linking teaching behaviours and nursing student learning outcomes are recommended. Introduction: Tom Kitwood's theoretical framework of person‐centred care is extensively and internationally referred to in healthcare services. However, despite the broad use of Kitwood's approach in clinical practice, the research examining experiences with the approach has not been mapped. Aim: To map the available literature on current empirical experiences in clinical practice of Kitwood's approach to person‐centred care for people with dementia, living in institutional settings in primary health care. Methods: A total of 154 studies concerning the experiences of people with dementia and their formal caregivers' use of Kitwood's framework of person‐centred care for residents living in institutional settings in primary health care were compiled from scientific databases. All three authors engaged in a systematic selection process, leading to nineteen articles being included in the review. Results: The results showed an overall tendency towards positive experiences gained from applying person‐centred approaches in clinical practice influenced by Kitwood's theoretical framework. Through the synthesis of data from the selected studies, six categories related to our research aim were identified 'Theoretical evaluation of Tom Kitwood's model of care', 'Models and frameworks', 'Interventions', 'Communication', 'Dementia Care Mapping' and 'Environment'. Conclusion: The present review included nineteen studies published from 1998 to 2016 and consisted mainly of peer‐reviewed scientific articles, followed by dissertations, conference posters and nonpeer‐reviewed articles. Background: The consequences of having an excessively crying infant in the family are acknowledged in research, yet to our knowledge, no literature review has been made regarding the overall consequences to the family and infant. This integrative review fills the gap with the aim to review and synthesise current research. Aims: To identify, describe and synthesise previous studies on the consequences of having an excessively crying infant in the family. Design: An integrative review of literature published between January 2008 and April 2018. The search was conducted in the following databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Medic and Journals@Ovid. Empirical literature reporting the consequences of having an excessively crying infant in the family was eligible for inclusion. Quality appraisal was performed using CASP tools and JBI checklists. The extracted data were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: Thirty‐one articles were included in the review. Ten themes were identified: The consequences of having an excessively crying infant in the family create desperation. It ruins everyday life, impairs breastfeeding, isolates and casts parents into loneliness, strains and breaks family relationships with feelings of failure as a parent. The excessively crying infant in the family brings a struggle that can lead to physical and mental exhaustion. The infant may have problems later in childhood. Parents are actively trying to solve the problem and to adjust. Time allows survival with traces of negative symptoms, feelings and memories. Conclusions: The consequences of having an excessively crying infant in the family are harmful to relationships and health. Caring for the crying infant can lead to exhaustion, which might escalate into abuse. These findings help professionals understand this complex phenomenon and encourage actions for concrete support. Background: Bedside shift reports have been recently recommended to ensure handovers. However, no evidence summarising studies designed to determine the qualitative approaches capable of better understanding patient experience have been published to date. Aim: The aim of this study was to acquire a deeper understanding of the experiences of patients regarding bedside shift reports. Data sources and review methods: A systematic review of qualitative studies followed by a meta‐synthesis method based upon Sandelowski's and Barroso's guidelines was performed. Four databases were systematically explored (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus and PsycINFO) without any limitation in time and up to the 31 August 2018. A total of 10 studies were included and evaluated in their methodological quality; then, a thematic synthesis was developed to synthetize the findings. Results: Three major themes reflect patients' experience regarding the bedside shift reports: (i) 'Being involved'; (ii) 'Being the centre of nursing care processes'; and (iii) 'Experiencing critical issues'. Patients are supportive of bedside shift reports as a right, as an opportunity to be involved, and of being in the centre of the nursing care process. By designing and implementing bedside shift reports, nurses also have an opportunity to increase patient safety and to provide concrete proof of the advancements achieved by the nursing profession in recent years. Conclusions: The bedside shift reports experience has been little studied to date from the perspective of patients. According to the findings, implementation of the bedside shift reports should include providing education to nurses with regard to the preferences and expectations of patients, as well as the critical issues that they can experience during the bedside shift reports. Presenting the bedside shift reports method, asking patient consent, discussing potential critical issues and the degree of involvement preferred at hospital admission, is strongly recommended.
