OBJETIVO: Caracterizar el estado actual de la regulación de la medicina tradicional en nueve países de América Latina y el Caribe. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se construyó una base de datos sobre componentes de los sistemas de salud tradicionales en nueve países de América Latina y el Caribe, mediante la creación de una red de individuos e instituciones de distintos países que estuvieran interesados en participar como informantes especializados con diferentes perfiles. La información para este estudio de tipo cualitativo se levantó, sistematizó y analizó entre marzo y diciembre de 1998. RESULTADOS: Se exponen los resultados obtenidos del tema de regulación de la medicina tradicional dividiendo a los países en tres grupos: a) los que cuentan con algún tipo de desarrollo en materia de legislación; b) los que están trabajando en el proceso de legislación, y c) los que no tienen legislación y el proceso de regulación es incipiente. CONCLUSIONES: Se muestra que el proceso legislativo de la medicina tradicional es variado en la región y se encuentra en diferentes etapas. Esta variedad de estadios nos muestra la complejidad de regular una práctica terapéutica de prestadores con bajos niveles de entrenamiento formal, con prácticas variadas y que sustentan su ejercicio en usos y costumbres que en las mayoría de las ocasiones son difíciles de ubicar dentro de los estándares de los sistemas de salud oficiales. El estudio se considera importante para el diseño e implementación de políticas que permitan adecuar la oferta de servicios de medicina tradicional con las necesidades de las poblaciones que más hacen uso de ella. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted between March and December 1998. Data were collected on the components of traditional health systems in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, by means of a network of individuals and institutions from different countries that acted as expert informants from different specialty areas. RESULTS: Findings from the analysis of traditional medicine regulation are presented in three groups: a) Countries with some developments in the area of legislation; b) Countries where legislation is underway; and, c) Countries with no legislation or incipient regulation. CONCLUSIONS: Several stages of traditional medical practice legislation are found in the region. This heterogeneity shows the complexity involved in regulating the practice of providers with low levels of formal training, with different therapeutic practices, and with customs that are frequently difficult to include within the standards of the official health system. These findings are important for designing and implementing healthcare policies to adequate traditional medical practices to the needs of populations that commonly use them. El propósito de la iniciativa Salud Mesoamérica 2015 (SM-2015) es mejorar el estado de salud y nutrición de la población con mayor grado de vulnerabilidad en Mesoamérica. El objetivo de la evaluación es generar evidencia sobre la efectividad conjunta de un paquete de intervenciones diseñadas para mejorar las condiciones de salud en la región. Se propone una evaluación de impacto con métodos mixtos, para conocer la magnitud de los cambios atribuibles a la SM-2015, e identificar los significados de estos cambios para la población objetivo, en el contexto de cada país. El eje conductor es un panel de localidades con el que se colectará información de individuos, hogares y unidades de salud de primero y segundo nivel de atención. El diseño que se describe en este documento fue desarrollado entre junio y diciembre de 2009, y su articulación se llevó a cabo en talleres realizados en Cuernavaca (México), Managua (Nicaragua), y San José (Costa Rica). El diseño propuesto permitirá generar evidencia sobre la efectividad conjunta del paquete de intervenciones propuesto en los planes maestros mesoamericanos. El éxito de este diseño radica en la voluntad y en el compromiso político de los países y los donantes.Since the Salud Mesoamerica 2015 initiative (SM-2015) aim is to improve health and nutrition conditions of those most vulnerable in Mesoamerica, the goal of the evaluation is to generate evidence of the joint effectiveness of a package of interventions designed to improve the health conditions. We propose a mix design for the evaluation, which will allow to know the magnitude of changes attributable to the interventions, as well as the meanings of these changes for the target population, taking into account the specificities of each country. The main axis of this design is a locality panel where information about individuals, households, and health facilities (first and second level) will also be collected. The evaluation design described in this paper was developed between June and December, 2009, and it was integrated during workshops in Cuernavaca (Mexico), Managua (Nicaragua), and San Jose (Costa Rica). The proposed design will allow to generate evidence about the joint effectiveness of the package of interventions proposed for the SM-2015. The success of this design rests on the political commitment of countries and donors.

Physical activity is a personal and societal investment in health. In Latin America, rates of non-communicable diseases are growing and there is burgeoning interest in physical activity as a preventative health measure. This paper describes physical activity among adults with intellectual disability from a public health perspective; and provides recommendations related to the need for, and measurement of, physical activity among persons with intellectual disability in Latin America.La actividad física es una inversión en salud, tanto personal como social. En América Latina las tasas de enfermedades no transmisibles van en aumento y existe un creciente interés en la actividad física como medida de salud preventiva. Este artículo describe la actividad física entre adultos con discapacidad intelectual desde la perspectiva de la salud pública y proporciona recomendaciones pertinentes a la necesidad y medición de la actividad física entre personas con discapacidad intelectual en América Latina.
