Recent literature indicates that people with Disorders of Intellectual Development (DID) experience health disparities in the pathologies that they present, and a worst access to health care. However, current evidence-based knowledge is still sparse outside the Anglo-Saxon countries. The POMONA-I and POMONA-II European projects aimed to collect information on the health status of people with DID in Europe. The POMONA-ESP project in Spain is meant to collect health information in a wide and representative sample of persons with DID. Also, there are studies that claim for the need of specialized services for people with DID at the public health system. There are also studies about the current state of the education and training about DID for students within the health sector. In this paper we review the latest evidences about the health of the persons with DID and we present the main research activities and care initiatives about this issue.

Objective: To estimate the seroprevalence of brucellosis in agricultural workers., Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 1996 and 1997 at Unidad de Salud Laboral del Centro de Salud Pública (CSP) in Castellón, España (Public Health Center Occupational Health Unit), among 482 subjects applying for certification to handle pesticides for agricultural use. Serologic testing consisted of rose Bengal staining, Wright's agglutination, and antibrucella Coombs tests: Statistical analysis consisted in estimation of prevalence figures and logistic regression modelling., Results: Fifteen subjects (3.1%, 95% CI 1.8%-5.1%) had titers of 1/40 or higher to Wright and/or Coombs tests; all were negative to rose Bengal staining. Objective: To analyze the short-term impact of air pollution on daily mortality in the City of Zaragoza (Spain)., Material and Methods: This ecologic study was conducted in Zaragoza, Spain, from 1991 to 1993. Poisson autoregressive models were constructed to assess the association between air particulate matter and sulphur dioxide SO2 and daily deaths. Four outcome variables were studied: overall mortality (excluding external deaths), mortality in subjects over 69 years of age, mortality due to respiratory disease, and mortality due to cardiovascular disease. A sample size was not obtained. Data analysis was conducted using the statistical software EGRET and SPSS., Results: SO2 levels were significantly associated with cardiovascular deaths (RR = 1.018 IC 95%: 1.001-1.036) and particulate matter levels with respiratory deaths (RR = 1.028 IC 95%: 1.006-1.051). During the warm season, a significant relationship was found between particulate mater and cardiovascular deaths (RR = 1.020 IC 95%: 1.001-1.040)., Conclusions: Low levels of air pollution were found in Zaragoza, with considerable variation in the concentration of air pollutant concentrations and daily respiratory and cardiovascular deaths, particularly during the warm season. Mitochondrial diseases are a group of disorders produced by defects in the oxidative phosphorylation system (Oxphos system), the final pathway of the mitochondrial energetic metabolism, resulting in a deficiency of the biosynthesis of ATP. Part of the polypeptide subunits involved in the Oxphos system are codified by the mitochondrial DNA. In the last years, mutations in this genetic system have been described and associated to well defined clinical syndromes. The clinical features of these disorders are very heterogeneous affecting, in most cases, to different organs and tissues and their correct diagnosis require precise clinical, morphological, biochemical and genetic data. The peculiar genetic characteristics of the mitochondrial DNA (maternal inheritance, polyplasmia and mitotic segregation) give to these disorders very distinctive properties.
