Although waste animal fats such as chicken fat are promising alternative energy sources, biodiesels produced from these type of feedstocks hardly satisfies the EN14214 biodiesel standards. In this study, biomixtures were prepared by blending cottonseed biodiesel and chicken rendering fat biodiesel which were produced via transesterification method. Biodiesels were blended with each other at 60/40, 50/50 and 30/70 volume ratios to produce CO60CH40, CO50CH50 and CO30CH70 fuels. First, fuel properties of the neat biodiesels and novel biomixtures were measured and compared to European biodiesel standards and diesel. Then, the engine performance, combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions of these novel biomixture fuels were measured in a three-cylinder indirect injection diesel engine under various engine loads and at constant speed of 1500 rpm. The fuel characterisation showed that CO60CH40 and CO50CH50 biomixtures met the European standards. The Brake Specific Energy Consumption (BSEC) and Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE) of all biomixtures were comparable with CO100, CH100 and diesel at the full engine load. The combustion results revealed that the maximum in-cylinder pressure and energy release values of the CO50CH50 were 4.2% and 4.4% higher than the diesel at full engine load because of optimised fuel properties of biomixture such as molecular structure, viscosity, cetane number and iodine value. CO50CH50 had 2.9% reduced CO 2 and comparable CO emission compared to diesel, which were also 5.6% and 13% lower than cottonseed biodiesel respectively. However, NO emission of CO50CH50 was found 3.8% and 5.8% higher than diesel and cottonseed biodiesel. A 6.5% reduction on NO emission was observed when CO60CH40 biomixture fuel was used instead of diesel. To conclude, this research showed that blending of cottonseed and chicken fat biodiesels is a promising approach to meet the EN14214 standards, improve in-cylinder pressure, optimise energy release and reduce exhaust emissions. Blending of different biodiesels will be tested as a future work.

The growing concerns on the emission of particles smaller than 23 nm, which are harmful to human health, lead to the necessity of introducing a regulation for these particles not yet included in the current emission standards. Considering that measurements of concentration of sub-23 nm particles are particularly sensitive to the sampling conditions, it is important to identify an effective assessment procedure. Aim of this paper is the characterization of the effect of the sampling conditions on sub-23 nm particles, emitted by PFI (port fuel injection) and DI (direct injection) spark ignition engines fueled with gasoline, ethanol and a mixture of ethanol and gasoline (E30). The experimental activity was carried out on a 250 cm3 displacement four stroke GDI and PFI single cylinder engines. The tests were conducted at 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm full load, representative of the homologation urban driving cycle. Particle emissions were characterized in terms of mass concentration, by means of a Smokemeter, and of number and size in the range of 5.6-560 nm, through the Engine Exhaust Particle Sizer (EEPS). The sampling was performed by a PMP compliant system, which permits to change the main sampling parameters. Particular attention was focused on the interval of 10-23 nm, to better characterize the effect of the sampling parameters on these particles, with the aim of determining a proper procedure for the measurement. The results show the strong influence of sampling conditions on particle measurements, especially for the sub- 23 nm highlighting the necessity for a definition of an appropriate measurement protocol for this size fraction

Growing concerns about the emissions of internal combustion engines have forced the adoption of aftertreatment devices to reduce the adverse impact of diesel engines on health and environment. Diesel particulate filters are considered as an effective means to reduce the particle emissions and comply with the regulations. Research activity in this field focuses on filter configuration, materials and aging, on understanding the variation of soot layer properties during time, on defining of the optimal strategy of DPF management for on-boardcontrol applications. A model was implemented in order to simulate the filtration and regeneration processes of a wall-flow particulate filter,taking into account the emission characteristic of the engine, whose architecture and operating conditions deeply affect the size distribution of soot particles. The model is based on a lumped parameter approach able to be used for on-board monitoring and control, in order to provide knowledge of DPF status versus time.

This paper evaluates a thermodynamic ice crystal icing model that has been previously presented to describe the possible mechanisms of icing within the core of a turbofan jet engine. The model functions between two distinct ice accretions based on a surface energy balance: freeze-dominated icing and melt-dominated icing. Freeze-dominated icing occurs when liquid water (from melted ice crystals) freezes and accretes on a surface along with the existing ice of the impinging water and ice mass. This freeze-dominated icing is characterized as having strong adhesion to the surface. The amount of ice accretion is partially dictated by a freeze fraction, which is the fraction of impinging liquid water that freezes. Melt-dominated icing occurs as unmelted ice on a surface accumulates. This melt-dominated icing is characterized by weakly bonded surface adhesion. The amount of ice accumulation is partially dictated by a melt fraction, which is the fraction of impinging ice crystals that melts. Experimentally observed ice growth rates suggest that only a small fraction of the impinging ice remains on the surface, implying a mass loss mechanism such as splash, runback, bounce, or erosion. The fraction of mass loss must be determined in conjunction with the fraction of freezing liquid water or fraction of melting ice on an icing surface for a given ice growth rate. This mass loss parameter, however, along with the freeze fraction and melt fraction, are the only experimental parameters that are currently not measured directly. Using icing growth rates from ice crystal icing experiments, a methodology that has been previously proposed is used to determine these unknown parameters. This work takes ice accretion data from tests conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Glenn Research Center in 2018 that examined the fundamental physics of ice crystal icing. This paper continues evaluation of the thermodynamic model from a previous effort, with additions to the model that account for sub-freezing temperatures that have been observed at the leading edge of the airfoil during icing. The predicted temperatures were generally in good agreement with measured temperatures. Other key findings include the total wet-bulb temperature being a good first order indicator of whether icing is freeze-dominated (sub-freezing values) or melt-dominated (above freezing). Maximum sticking efficiency values, the fraction of impinging mass that adheres to a surface, was calculated to be about 0.2, and retained this maximum value for a range of melt ratios (0.3 to 0.65 and possibly higher), which is defined as the ratio of liquid water content to total water content. Higher air velocities reduced the maximum sticking efficiency and shifted the icing regime to higher melt ratio values. Finally, the leading edge ice accretion angle was found to be related to ice growth (lower growth rates for smaller angles) and melt ratio (smaller melt ratios resulted in smaller angles, likely due to erosion effects).

A detailed understanding of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) techniques applied to spark-ignition (SI) engines is necessary as they allow for many technical advantages such as increased power output, higher fuel efficiency and better cold start performances. Within this context, the extensive validation of multi-dimensional models against experimental data is a fundamental task in order to achieve an accurate reproduction of the physical phenomena characterizing the injected fuel spray. In this work, simulations of different Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray G conditions were performed with the Lib-ICE code, which is based on the open source OpenFOAMtechnology, by using a RANS Eulerian-Lagrangian approach to model the ambient gas-fuel spray interaction. Foremost, the main scope of the activity was to identify the most accurate numerical set-up in terms of atomization ad secondary break-up models, thanks to a validation of the computed results against experimental data available for the ECN Spray G baseline condition. Specifically, attention was focused on spray penetration along with an analysis of spray morphology and effects of plume-to-plume interaction. Afterwards, the reference set-up was tested and validated under different operating conditions, characterized by detailed experimental measurements specifically provided for this work. In particular, Mie scattering and Schlieren techniques allowed the quasi-simultaneous acquisition of both vapor and liquid penetrations, while a customized image-processing procedure, developed in Matlab environment, was used for the outline of the spray contours of both fuel phases to measure the parameters characterizing the jet development. A robust reference numerical set-up was identified, capable to reproduce with good accuracy the injection process of a multi-hole GDI spray under the wide range of tested operating conditions

[EN] Low pressure exhaust gases recirculation (LP-EGR) is becoming a state-of-the-art technique for Nitrogen oxides (NOx) reduction in compression ignited (CI) engines. However, despite the pollutant reduction benefits, LP-EGR suffers from strong non-linearities and delays which are difficult to handle, resulting in reduced engine performance under certain conditions. Measurement and observation of oxygen concentration at the intake have been a research topic over the past few years, and it may be critical for transition phases (from low pressure to high pressure EGR). Here, an adequate selection of models and sensors is essential to obtain a precise and fast measurement for control purposes. The present paper analyses different sensor configurations, with oxygen concentration measurements at the intake and exhaust manifold and combines observation techniques with sensor models to determine the potential of each configuration. Experimental results from a 2.2 l. diesel engine are used to validate the presented techniques.

As is known, internal combustion engines based on Otto or Diesel cycles cannot complete the expansion process of the gas inside the cylinder, thus losing a relevant energy content, in the order of 30% of total. The residual energy of the unexpanded gas has been partially exploited through the use of an exhaust gas turbine for turbocharging the internal combustion engine; further attempts have been made with several compound solutions, with an electric generator connected to the turbocharger allowing to convert into electrical energy the quota power produced by the turbine which is not used by the compressor, or with a second turbine downstream the first to increase the exhaust gas energy recovery. Turbo-compound solutions were also employed in large marine Diesel engines, where the second turbine downstream the first was used to deliver more power to the main propeller shaft. In all these cases the overall efficiency increments remained within 5%. If completely recovered by the use of a properly designed expander-generator unit, the energy content of the unexpanded in-cylinder gas could substantially increase the overall efficiency of the thermal unit. In the present paper the authors evaluate, by means of simple yet effective calculations, the efficiency attainable by a thermal unit composed of a spark ignition engine endowed of an exhaust gas energy recovery expander connected to a proper generator. The proposed thermal unit, which is particularly suitable for hybrid propulsion solutions, has been evaluated both in the naturally aspirated and in the supercharged version. The efficiency of each thermal unit is also compared to reference baseline engine, thus highlighting the real benefit introduced by the adoption of the proposed thermal unit. As result, it was found that the complete and efficient recovery of the unexpanded gas energy has the potential to increase the overall efficiency of the propulsion system by 10-15%, depending on the characteristics of the thermal engine and of the exhaust energy expander-generator unit.

Diesel engine has fuel combustion capability in various high density oil such as residual fuels or biofuels derived from fossil or living matter. But for commercial use, these fuels except bio diesel fuel (BDF) should be heated, separated and filtered by equipment and dosed or mixed with additive or distillate oil etc. before being supplied to the engine in order to improve combustibility. This study aims to illuminate fuel characteristic of blend contained woody pyrolysis oil (WPO) which is high viscosity and incombustible, and dimethyl ether (DME) whose emission of combustion has no soot particle. This paper describes thermo-physical property of neat WPO and the blend on the basis of the evaluation of fuel fluidity by measurement and calculation of viscosity. According to the result, it was confirmed that the fluidity of WPO was improved by mixing DME and the approximate viscosity expressions at any temperature of WPO and the blend were good accuracy.

Due to titanium’s excellent strength-to-weight ratio and high corrosion resistance, titanium and its alloys have great potential to reduce energy usage in vehicles through a reduction in vehicle mass. The mass of a road vehicle is directly related to its energy consumption through inertial requirements and tire rolling resistance losses. However, when considering the manufacture of titanium automotive components, the machinability is poor, thus increasing processing cost through a trade-off between extended cycle time (labor cost) or increased tool wear (tooling cost). This fact has classified titanium as a “difficult-to-machine” material and consequently, titanium has been traditionally used for application areas having a comparatively higher end product cost such as in aerospace applications, the automotive racing segment, etc., as opposed to the consumer automotive segment. Herein, the problems associated with machining titanium are discussed, and a review of cutting tool technologies is presented that contributes to improving the machinability of titanium alloys. Additionally, nonconventional machining techniques such as High Speed Machining and Ultrasonic Machining are also reviewed. Also discussed are additional factors that need to be considered especially pertaining to the machining of titanium alloys, a crucial one being the non-conformity with standard tool wear models. Subsequently, the results of a controlled milling experiment on Ti-6Al-4V is presented, to evaluate the relationship between certain tool preparation/process parameters and tool wear for a comparison with traditional wear models. INTRODUCTION Titanium is the seventh most abundant metal and the fourth most abundant structural metal in earth’s crust behind aluminum, iron and magnesium. Titanium and its alloys are considered as alternatives in many engineering applications due to their superior properties such as retained strength at elevated temperatures, high chemical inertness and resistance to oxidation. Titanium has traditionally been utilized as a lightweight, very strong and exceedingly corrosion resistant material in the aerospace industry, electric power plants, seawater desalination plants, and heat exchanges. Also, it has been used in industrial applications such as petroleum refining, nuclear waste storage, food processing, pulp and paper plants, and marine applications [1]. Nevertheless, when considering the use of titanium as an automotive component material, there are several conflicting aspects that must be addressed. First of all, the cost of titanium is relatively high in comparison to other common engineering materials such as aluminum, magnesium, and steel. For this reason, it specifically calls for implementation and use only when extreme conditions are to be met, such as in the aerospace industry. The main reason for the increased cost is due to the limited demand from other market segments, thus making the extraction of the titanium ore expensive. Also, the processing costs for converting the ore into commercially usable titanium and its alloys is extensive and requires special processing procedures and involves vast batch production and careful process control, making them difficult to automate. Second, the difficulty in efficiently manufacturing titanium components has a significant adverse effect on processing cost which is mainly due to its low modulus of elasticity and high yield stress. Another manufacturing concern that arises during the machining of titanium is its susceptibility to work hardening during the cutting process and its tendency to react with many cutting tool materials causing substantial tool wear. Additionally, titanium has poor thermal conductivity properties, making heat dissipation a problem, again contributing to higher tool wear. Of primary concern however is the lack of material grade development outside the aerospace industry in which most of the alloys are developed for extreme conditions. This severely limits the currently available grades suited for automotive applications. Thus, a suite of lower strength alloys with properties specially catered for commercial automotive use needs to be developed. This paper examines most of the issues traditionally associated with the machinability of titanium and titanium alloys. As mentioned before, some methodologies and techniques are recommended for mitigating the non-desirable effects during titanium processing and analyzed in more detail, is its unique tool wear characteristics especially in light of manufacturing automotive components. Thus, this study is expected to primarily assist in the reduction of the processing cost of titanium and its alloys for automotive component manufacture. This will help reduce the operating cost of a road vehicle in terms of better fuel economy due to the reduced mass, which in turn translates to better energy efficiency. TITANIUM IN THE AUTOMOTIVE

A protocol has been developed that produced the type of lunar soil abrasion damage observed on Apollo spacesuits. This protocol was then applied to four materials (Kevlar (DuPont), Vectran (Kuraray Co., Ltd.), Orthofabric, and Tyvek (DuPont)) that are candidates for advanced spacesuits. Three of the four new candidate fabrics (all but Vectran) were effective at keeping the dust from penetrating to layers beneath. In the cases of Kevlar and Orthofabric this was accomplished by the addition of a silicone layer. In the case of Tyvek, the paper structure was dense enough to block dust transport. The least abrasive damage was suffered by the Tyvek. This was thought to be due in large part to its non-woven paper structure. The woven structures were all abraded where the top of the weave was struck by the abrasive. Of these, the Orthofabric suffered the least wear, with both Vectran and Kevlar suffering considerably more extensive filament breakage.

Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence has been widely accepted and applied to measurements of fuel concentration distributions in IC engines. The need for such measurements has increased with the introduction of Direct Injection (DI) gasoline engines, where it is critical to understand the influence of mixture inhomogeneity on ignition and subsequent combustion, and in particular the implications for cyclic variability. The apparent simplicity of PLIF has led to misunderstanding of the technique when applied to quantitative measurements of fuel distributions. This paper presents a series of engineering methods for optimizing, calibrating and referencing, which together demonstrate a quantitative measure of fuel concentration with an absolute accuracy of 10%. PLIF is widely used with single component fuels as carriers for the fluorescent tracers. This paper shows that this method inadequately describes a real fuel spray, and presents instead a method that uses a fully fractionated multi-component fuel for PLIF diagnostics. A series of measurements is presented of fuel distribution, early injection DI homogeneity and cyclic variation of injector plumes in a DI single cylinder optical research engine. This paper presents the methodology for structural analysis of a high-speed Diesel engine aluminum cylinder head for Pick-up application, considering the finite element method. As boundary conditions, it was considered the loads from the bolts tightening process, combustion peak pressure, and thermal loading. The stresses generated during the assembly of the valve seats and valve guides were also evaluated. The valve train dynamic loads were not analyzed or considered in this paper, due to its negligible effects at the critical regions. The FE model contains the upper part of the crankcase and the entire cylinder head. Heat transfer coefficients at the water jackets were obtained from a CFD calculation and used at the heat transfer analysis to evaluate the thermal stresses.

This paper compares the performance, efficiency, emissions and combustion parameters of a prototype two cylinder 430 cm 3 engine which has been tested in a variety of normally aspirated (NA) modes with compression ratio (CR) variations. Experiments were completed using 98-RON pump gasoline with modes defined by alterations to the induction system, which included carburetion and port fuel injection (PFI). The results from this paper provide some insight into the CR effects for small NA spark ignition (SI) engines. This information provides future direction for the development of smaller engines as engine downsizing grows in popularity due to rising oil prices and recent carbon dioxide (CO2) emission regulations. Results are displayed in the engine speed, manifold absolute pressure (MAP) and CR domains, with engine speeds exceeding 10000 rev/min and CRs ranging from 9 to 13. Combustion analysis is also included, allowing mass fraction burn (MFB) comparison. Experimental results showed minimum brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) or maximum brake thermal efficiency (ηTH) values in the order of 220 g/kWh or 37% could be achieved. A maximum brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) of 13 bar was also recorded at 8000 rev/min.

Since 2003, a concerted effort between Alcan Inc. (ARDC: Arvida Research and Development Centre) and the Aluminium Technology Centre (ATC) of the National Research Council of Canada is underway to develop a technology, dubbed SEED (Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device), to produce semi-solid aluminium feedstock. This technology, patented by Alcan Inc., is a simple process offering many advantages over thixocasting, especially for reducing the cost of feedstock. The process involves two main steps: 1) heat extraction to achieve a desired liquid/solid mixture, and 2) drainage of an excess liquid to produce a self-supporting semi-solid slug that is cast in a high pressure press. This paper reports that the SEED technology is applicable to a number of aluminium alloys and can be easily adapted to produce a wide range of slug dimensions. This paper shows a numerical evaluation of fuels and additives for HCCl combustion. First, a long list of candidate HCCl fuels is selected. For all the fuels in the list, operating conditions (compression ratio, equivalence ratio and intake temperature) are determined that result in optimum performance under typical operation for a heavy-duty engine. Fuels are also characterized by presenting Log(p)-Log(T) maps for multiple fuels under HCCl conditions. Log(p)-Log(T) maps illustrate important processes during HCCl engine operation, including compression, low temperature heat release and ignition. Log(p)-Log(T) diagrams can be used for visualizing these processes and can be used as a tool for detailed analysis of HCCl combustion. The paper also includes a ranking of many potential additives. Experiments and analyses have indicated that small amounts (a few parts per million) of secondary fuels (additives) may considerably affect HCCl combustion and may play a significant role in controlling HCCl combustion. Additives are ranked according to their capability to advance HCCl ignition. The best additives are listed and an explanation of their effect on HCCl combustion is included.

The worldwide introduction of new emission standards and new, more encompassing, legislating cycles have led to a need to increase both a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system's capacity and conversion efficiency. To this end, it is important for an SCR system to operate to the extremes of its temperature range which in many systems is currently limited by the temperature at which diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) can easily decompose without the formation of deposits. This paper analyses a new system for low-temperature ammonia provision to the SCR reaction. Ammonia Creation and Conversion Technology (ACCT) uses pressure controlled thermal decomposition of DEF followed by re-formation to form a fluid with greater volatility and the same ammonia density as DEF conforming to ISO 22241. A dosing strategy can then be employed where any combination of DEF or ACCT solution can be used to provide ammonia as a reductant over the whole activity temperature range of a catalyst. High-speed shadowgraphy data identifies both fluids' decomposition rates at several temperatures demonstrating ammonia production from 50 °C with rapid decomposition and full water vaporisation from 100 °C. This study has also equipped an optically accessible hot flow, diesel exhaust simulation rig with a prototype ACCT device. The optical components allow rapid visual verification of deposit growth for bench-marking urea-based system. At a variety of exhaust temperature and mass flow conditions, the study identified a minimum deposit limited working temperature for DEF of approximately 200 °C whereas ACCT solution was shown not to form any deposits and readily generate ammonia as low as 50 °C. Further to this, gaseous species quantification using FTIR techniques has shown ammonia release in an 800 mm flow path for ACCT solution to be in excess of 80%. The study has demonstrated the effectiveness of ACCT at extending low temperature operating limits of DEF based SCR systems thereby increasing the total possible NOx conversion.

Diesel engine pollutant emissions legislation is becoming more and more stringent. New driving cycles, including increasingly severe transient engine operating conditions and low ambient-temperature conditions, extend considerably the engine operating domain to be optimized to attain the expected engine performance. Technological innovations, such as high pressure injection systems, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) loops and intake pressure boosting systems allow significant improvement of engine performance. Nevertheless, because of the high number of calibration parameters, combustion optimization becomes expensive in terms of resources. System simulation is a promising tool to perform virtual experiments and consequently to reduce costs, however models must account for relevant in-cylinder physics to be sensitive to the impact of technology on combustion and pollutant formation. In particular, soot is one of the major pollutants of Diesel engines and its kinetic is highly dependent on local mixture properties into the cylinder. This is a challenge for 0-Dimensional (0D) combustion approaches, as it implies 3-Dimensional (3D) phenomena. In this work, to tackle this aspect, the 0D Dual Flame Model (DFM) combustion model was enriched with quasi dimensional features based on the conceptual spray combustion model proposed by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). This allows to identify local key phenomena depending on mixture thermochemical properties driving soot kinetics. The model was tested on a comprehensive experimental database generated at IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN), to investigate the capability of the new approach to predict the impact of engine operating conditions, injection strategy and dilution rate on soot emissions. The quality of the results and the reduced computational time make this approach suitable for engine design and control activities.&nbsp

Second generation biomass is an attractive renewable feedstock for transport fuels. Its sulfur content is generally negligible and the carbon cycle is reduced from millions to tens of years. One hitherto non-valorized feedstock are so-called humins, a residual product formed in the conversion of sugars to platform chemicals, such as hydroxymethylfurfural and methoxymethylfurfural, intermediates in the production of FDCA, a building block used to produce the polyethylene furanoate (PEF) bottle by Avantium. The focus of this study is to investigate the spray combustion behavior of humins as a renewable alternative for heavy fuel oil (HFO) under large two-stroke engine-like conditions in an optically accessible constant volume chamber. To reduce the viscosity to HFO levels of the otherwise crystalline humins, methyl levulinate (ML), another side-stream from the same sugar dehydration process, is blended to the former compound at 25 wt.-%; a ratio comparable to that actually produced in many dehydration processes. Various fuel properties of interest, including elemental composition, heating value, density, ignition quality, acid number, flash point, pour point, carbon residue, sediment, water and ash content are measured for the resulting humins-ML blend. The blend is injected into an optically accessible constant volume chamber, the dimensions, injector characteristics and prevailing ambient conditions of which are representative of those found in large two-stroke marine engines. Commercial HFO is used as a benchmark. The combustion process is evaluated by means of shadow imaging and OH∗-chemiluminescence. The former and latter optical techniques are used to determine the phasing and overall magnitude of the heat release event, and ignition delay/location and flame lift off length, respectively. From the results becomes clear that the average ignition delay is comparable to that of HFO, albeit at a higher cycle-to-cycle variation. Notwithstanding a longer lift off length and more downstream ignition kernels, the overall results suggest that the proposed bio-blend is a feasible renewable alternative for HFO in terms of technical feasibility.

Copyright © 2016 SAE International. As a potential material for lightweight vehicle, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has proven to perform well in optical behavior and weather resistance. However, the application in automotive glazing has seldom been studied. This paper investigates the defrost performance of PMMA rear window using both numerical and experimental methods. The finite element analysis (FEA) results were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Based on the validated finite element model, we further optimized the defrost efficiency by changing the arrangement of heating lines. The results demonstrated the frost layer on the vision-related region of PMMA rear window can melt within 30 minutes, which meets the requirement of defrost efficiency.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) has become the mainstream approach for removing heavy-duty (HD) diesel engine NOx emissions. Highly efficient SCR systems are a key enabling technology allowing engines to be calibrated for very high NOx output with a resultant gain in fuel consumption while still maintaining NOx emissions compliance. One key to the successful implementation of high efficiency SCR at elevated engine out NOx levels is the ability to introduce significantly more AdBlue into the exhaust flow while still ensuring complete ammonia production and avoiding the formation of deposits. This paper presents a body of experimental work conducted on an exhaust test bench using optical techniques including high-speed imaging and phase Doppler interferometry (PDI), applied under representative exhaust conditions to a HD diesel engine after-treatment system with optical access inside the mixer tube. Two different sprays were used to dose AdBlue onto the mixing device. A three-hole injector and a single-hole pressure-swirl injector were characterised in ambient and heated exhaust flow conditions. A metallic two-stage mixer and an uncoated cordierite ceramic substrate mixer were compared and demonstrated the ability of the substrate mixer to reduce deposit formation at higher dosing rates inside the mixer tube when used with the correct spray type. High-speed imaging revealed the ability of the substrate to absorb injected AdBlue spray at cooler exhaust temperatures. However, using the incorrect spray can lead to liquid saturation inside the substrate channels, which is detrimental due to the formation of deposits on the rear face of the substrate.

Computer software, which simulates the thermodynamic and gas dynamic of internal combustion engines, are used extensively during design and development process. This paper analyzes the 1D boundary multi-pipe junctions calculations using the Method of Characteristics (MOC). Sonic flows can be encountered in the exhaust manifolds of internal combustion engines (especially racing engines) and in the model a check if the flow is sonic or not have been made. Flows with more than one manifold have flow toward the junction, need an equivalent "Datum" manifold, with an airflow as the sum of all flows, an averaged area and stagnation enthalpy has been defined in order to calculate the pressure loss when crossing the junction. The pressure loss terms have been calculated as function of the flow-ratio of the gas flowing to the manifold to the total incoming flow and the pipe angle. Such terms take into account of the flow ratio referred to the "Datum" flow and the pipe angle term is the average of all the pressure losses of every duct with incoming flow. The main model used to calculate the wave actions in the manifolds is the Two Step Lax-Wenfroff scheme, second order in space and time with the TVD flux limiter, needed to smooth the instabilities typical of second order hyperbolic schemes. Two set of tests have been designed in order to show the advantages of the present formulation. The first is "Y" junction with an inlet duct. Increasing the inlet pressure, the flow increase up to reach the sonic flow. The second test is a Y junction with 2 inlet ducts with the third duct that goes to sonic flow. A racing engine has also been simulated comparing the results with those from a dynamometer, showing good accordance between model and measured data. Copyright © 2013 SAE International.

"Progress in hole drilling technique is opening new perspectives in diesel nozzle design. In such a scenario, research on unconventional hole shapes looks worthwhile, in order to evaluate their influence on fuel flow features within the nozzle. In the present paper, investigations have been based on modeling. Moving from a standard hole configuration towards oval shaped holes, 3D-CFD campaigns have been devoted to highlight the hole layout influence on diesel nozzle flow. The investigations have been focused both on the fuel flow pattern at hole inlet and on the flow features at hole exit section; in such a modeling process, transient data concerning spatial distribution of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and cavitation behavior at hole exit have been computed, highlighting the perturbations induced by the unconventional hole shape on the fuel flow; once the flow behavior has been explored, results have been resumed indicating how flow pattern properties are reflected at hole exit, quantitatively"

The influences of ethanol and iso-butanol blended with gasoline on engine-out and post Three-Way Catalyst (TWC) particle size distribution and number concentration were studied using a GM 2.0L turbocharged Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) engine. The engine was operated using the production ECU with a dynamometer controlling the engine speed and the accelerator pedal position controlling the engine load. A TSI Fast Mobility Particle Sizer (FMPS) spectrometer was used to measure the particle size distribution in the range from 5.6 to 560 nm with a sampling rate of 1 Hz. US federal certification gasoline (E0), two ethanol-blended fuels (E10 and E20), and 11.7% iso-butanol blended fuel (BU12) were tested. Measurements were conducted at ten selected steady-state engine operation conditions. Bi-modal particle size distributions were observed for all operating conditions with peak values at particle sizes of 10 nm and 70 nm. Idle and low speed / low load conditions emitted higher total particle numbers than other operating conditions. At idle, the engine-out Particulate Matter (PM) emissions were dominated by nucleation mode particles, and the production TWC reduced these nucleation mode particles by more than 50%, while leaving the accumulation mode particle distribution unchanged. At engine load higher than 6 barmore » NMEP, accumulation mode particles dominated the engine-out particle emissions and the TWC had little effect. Compared to the baseline gasoline (E0), E10 does not significantly change PM emissions, while E20 and BU12 both reduce PM emissions under the conditions studied. Iso-butanol was observed to impact PM emissions more than ethanol, with up to 50% reductions at some conditions. In this paper, the issues related to PM measurement using FMPS are also discussed. While some uncertainties are due to engine variation, the FMPS must be operated under careful maintenance procedures in order to achieve repeatable measurement results.« less

Tube drawing is a well known process involving at room temperature the reduction of diameter and wall thickness to obtain specified values. The initial tube is drawn into a die of a smaller opening and its thickness achieved by use of a mandrel. Usually, the mandrel has a land area which diameter defines by sizing the inside diameter of the final tube. Some structural components found in cars, aircrafts and other vehicles require bent or hydroformed tubes of lower weight. It is of interest to have tubes of varying axial or circumferential thickness so that to reduce overweight in low stressed areas and reinforce it otherwise. However, the production of tubes of varying thickness is more difficult in reason notably of higher metal flow stresses in the deformation zone and the need to control precisely the mandrel position during drawing. Axial thickness variation is obtained using a mandrel with stepped lands or with a slight taper while circumferential variation is achieved with a mandrel of desired internal or external shape (e.g. oval). In this paper, two techniques for axial tube wall thickness variation and one technique for circumferential variations are introduced and tested. First, the techniques to produce drawn tubes with thickness variations are presented. For testing, a small (335 kN) instrumented tube drawing machine is used. Details on this machine, process lubrication, monitored data and on the tooling implemented are also presented. Initial tubes are mainly AA6063 extrusions of 63.5mm O.D. and 2.6mm thick and the final outside diameter, i.e. the inside diameter of the die, is about 47.5 mm. AA6061 tubes are also drawn. Starting with drawing tests without mandrel, the natural flow of the tube and the drawing force involved are measured. Secondly, tubes of 4 different thicknesses are produced with a stepped mandrel and the strain hardening effect on mechanical properties established. Using a tapered mandrel, tubes of continuously varying wall thickness are tested. Higher local pressure in the die corner radius restricts proper lubrication in certain conditions but results are promising in most cases. We also study the effect of thickness rate of change along the tube. Finally, tests with a stepped oval mandrel provided good results for circumferential thickness variations. The dimensional quality is measured using a coordinate measuring machine and mechanical properties obtained from tensile tests in both initial and drawn tubes. Finally, despite some minor problems, the techniques proposed can efficiently produce tubes with thickness variations and have a very strong potential for industrial use.

This paper explores the combined effects of boosting, intake air temperature, trapped residual gas fraction, and dilution on the Maximum Pressure Rise Rate (MPRR) in a boosted single cylinder gasoline HCCI engine with combustion controlled by negative valve overlap. Dilutions by both air and by cooled EGR were used. Because of the sensitivity of MPRR to boost, the MPRR constrained maximum load (as measured by the NIMEP) did not necessarily increase with boosting. At the same intake temperature and trapped residual gas fraction, dilution by recirculated burn gas was effective in reducing the MPRR, but dilution by air increased the value of MPRR. The dependence of MPRR on the operating condition was interpreted successfully by a simple thermodynamic analysis that related the MPRR value to the volumetric heat release rate., United States. This paper explores through engine simulations the use of LPG and CNG gas fuels in a 1.5 liter Spark Ignition (SI) four cylinder gasoline engine with double over head camshafts, four valves per cylinder equipped with a novel mixture preparation and ignition system comprising centrally located Direct Injection (DI) injector and Jet Ignition (JI) nozzles. With DI technology, the fuel may be introduced within the cylinder after completion of the valve events. DI of fuel reduces the embedded air displacement effects of gaseous fuels and lowers the charge temperature. DI also allows lean stratified bulk combustion with enhanced rate of combustion and reduced heat transfer to the cylinder walls creating a bulk lean stratified mixture. Bulk combustion is started by a Jet Ignition (JI) system introducing in the main chamber multiple jets of reacting gases for enhanced rate of combustion, initiating main chamber burning in multiple regions with reduced sensitivity to mixture state and composition. Coupling of JI and DI allows the development of a lean burn engine making possible operation up to main chamber overall fuel-to-air equivalence ratios reducing almost to zero and throttle-less load control by quantity of fuel injected as in the diesel engine. Results are presented in terms of maps of brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and efficiency and maximum power densities. Load variations are obtained by varying the air to fuel equivalence ratio from ?=1 up to ?=6.6. Maximum power densities running ?=1 are 80 hp/liter (60 kW/liter) with CNG and almost 90 hp/liter (67 kW/liter) with LPG. BSFCs are as low as 200 and 190 g/kWh and brake efficiencies are up to 39 and 37% respectively with LPG and CNG running lean ?=1.65. Low BSFCs and high brake efficiencies are possible from 25 to 100% of engine load.

The present work aims at developing and setting up a methodology in which non-intrusive measurements (engine block vibration) are used for monitoring combustion characteristics (combustion diagnosis, combustion development). The engine block vibration appears as a very complex signal in which different sources can be identified, since every moving component or physical process involved in the operation of the engine produces a vibration signal (exhaust valve open/close, inlet valve open/close, fuel injection, combustion, piston slap). Aimed at monitoring the engine running condition, the information carried by the vibration signal has to be broken down into its various contributions and then they have to be related to their respective excitation sources. Concerning combustion-induced vibration, experimental measures has been at first devoted to the selection of the best location where to place the piezoelectric accelerometer. Such a location has to guarantee the highest sensitivity as regards the combustion structural contribution (due to suddenly applied pressure forces inside the cylinder when combustion process takes place) in the overall engine block vibration signal. A bounded frequency range has been determined, in which high correlation values characterize the relation between the vibration signal and the in-cylinder pressure. A second series of experimental tests has been carried out with the aim of extending the obtained results to the engine complete operative field. In the paper, the experimental apparatus is at first described; then, the time and frequency domain processing technique is presented and representative results of the investigation are reported and discussed (different values of engine speed and load conditions have been imposed).

The work aims at developing and setting up a model able to predict the diesel spray evolution to be integrated into a complete thermodynamic model of the engine. Previous papers have been devoted to realize a numerical model for the injection system, in which a lumped parameter + one-dimensional approach is employed. Such a model has been now enhanced by introducing a quasi-dimensional model for fuel break up, diffusion and penetration processes. A self-developed heating sub-model is included in the model, which enables the evaluation of the influence of the fuel properties on the evaporation process. As a result, the injection system simulation model gives indications on the spray formation process and it is used into a lumped parameter model of the combustion process. Results concerning the influence of fuel properties on the evaporation process are presented and discussed, pointing out its effect on engine performance.

This paper deals with the numerical investigation of a Diesel engine high pressure DI system in which the influence of needle motion characteristics on the internal injector flows is evaluated; a radial perturbation of the axial needle motion has been imposed to analyze its role over the nozzle flow features. The developed model is based on the coupling of two computational tools. With the former one, AMESim code, the injector has been modeled; the results obtained from the injector simulation, in terms of injection needle lift time evolution, have been used to initialize the latter computation tool, FIRE code, in which 3D flow numerical investigation of the internal injector flows has been performed. Details of the adopted modeling strategy are presented and the results of each simulation step are shown.

Methyl esters derived from vegetable oils by the process of transesterification (commonly referred as ‘biodiesel’), can be used as an alternative fuel in compression ignition engines. In this study, three different vegetable oils (rape, soy and waste oil) were used to produce biodiesel fuels that were then tested in a four cylinder direct injection engine, typically used in small diesel genset applications. Engine performance and emissions were recorded at five load conditions and at two different speeds. This paper presents the results obtained for measurements of NOx and smoke opacity at the different speed and load conditions for the three biodiesels, and their blends (5 and 50% v/v) with mineral diesel. A simple combustion analysis was also performed where ignition delay, position and magnitude of peak cylinder pressure and heat release rate were examined to asses how the variation of chemical structure and blend percentage affects engine performance. Engine performance and emissions for all of the 5% biodiesel blends were indistinguishable from mineral diesel. However, at higher blends, the rape fuel exhibited better emission and performance characteristics than either the soy or waste fuels. Furthermore; whilst emissions trends varied for each blend and fuel, emissions of smoke were significantly reduced at all speed and load conditions, and NOx was reduced by up to 50% at low loads. It will also be shown that while engine performance was not significantly deteriorated by biodiesel, there was evidence of increased ignition delay with higher blends, and a possible two stage ignition process where mineral diesel ignited earlier than the biodiesel.

Headlights manufactures in the automotive industry make a large usage of polymers and plastic materials addressing important issues such as thermal stress control and water condensation on the inner surfaces of the headlamp as important factors for headlight design. In this paper, an innovative simulation methodology to calculate thermal distribution in automotive headlights is illustrated. With this method radiation is accurately calculated by means of a dedicated software whereas conductive and convective heat transfer is calculated by means of a general CFD code. A condensation model has also been developed and utilized with the CFD code to investigate the effect of forced convection flow through the headlight vents on water film evaporation. CFD results have been validated against measured headlight wall temperatures and flow velocities showing an encouraging degree of agreement.

As part of ongoing research on hydrogen-enhanced lean burn Sl engines, this paper details an experimental combustion system optimization program. Experiments focused on three key areas: the ignition system, in-cylinder charge motion produced by changes in the inlet ports, and uniformity of fuel-air mixture preparation. Hydrogen enhancement is obtained with a H 2 , CO, N 2 mixture produced by a fuel reformer such as the plasmatron. The ignition system tests compared a standard inductive coil scheme against high-energy discharge systems. Charge motion experiments focused on the impact of different flow and turbulence patterns generated within the cylinder by restrictor plates at the intake port entrance, as well as novel inlet flow modification cones. The in-cylinder fluid motion generated by each configuration was characterized using swirl and tumble flow benches. Mixture preparation tests compared a standard single-hole pintle port fuel injector against a fine atomizing 12-hole injector. Results indicate that optimizations of the combustion system in conjunction with hydrogen-enhancement can extend the relative air/fuel ratio A at the lean limit of operation by roughly 25% compared against the baseline configuration. Nearly half of this improvement may be attributed to improvements in the combustion system. Furthermore, hydrogen-enhancement produces a nearly constant lean misfire limit improvement of -0.20 - 0.25 A values, regardless of baseline combustion behavior. In contrast, the improvement of the amount of dilution with excess air at the point of peak engine efficiency decreases as engine operation becomes leaner, due to the inherently lengthening burn duration as λ increses.

This paper presents a control system for the thermoforming of large sheets. The system has three main purposes: Its primary purpose is for cycle-to-cycle control of the sheet temperature map as predicted by the thermoforming simulation. Its secondary purpose is to tune the simulation to the actual process through on-line characterization of some of the material and machine characteristics so that the simulation's predictions are reconciled with the machine sensors outputs. This paper describes the design and testing of a miniature LHP having a 7 mm O.D. evaporator with an integral CC. The vapor line and liquid line are made of 1.6mm stainless steel tubing. The evaporator and the CC are connected on the outer surface by a copper strap and a thermoelectric (TEC) is installed on the strap. The TEC is used to control the CC temperature by applying an electrical current for heating or cooling. Tests performed in ambient included start-up, power cycle, sink temperature cycle, and CC temperature control using TEC. The LHP demonstrated very robust operation in all tests where the heat load varied between 0.5W and 1OOW, and the sink temperature varied between 243K and 293K. The heat leak from the evaporator to the CC was extremely small. The TEC was able to control the CC temperature within +/-0.3K under all test conditions, and the required control heater power was less than 1W.

The advantages of magnetic implant induction welding (Emabond TM ) 1 technology for various thermoplastics were widely discussed since the mid-eighties in a series of technical articles and reports, and presented to the professional Societies (SAE, SPE, SME, etc). In 19982003, we reported to SAE International our technical achievements in optimizing the mechanical performance of welded nylon (6, 66, 6/66, 46, etc.) using frictional (linear and orbital vibration, ultrasonic), contact (hot plate), and non-contact (laser through-transmission) welding technologies. Our recent developments focused on optimization of mechanical performance of induction welded nylon 6, which has reached a new performance level through continuous improvement of magnetic implant induction welding technology, including properties of the formulated magnetic implant material, new equipment, SPC process control, optimized design of joints, etc. In the current paper, we will try to enhance the understanding of the automotive engineering community regarding the usefulness, unique capability, and applicability of the recently improved Emabond welding technology in the design for heavy-duty and loadbearing automotive plastic parts where requirements for safety and durability are the first priority and fiber-glass reinforced nylon based plastics are widely used.

This paper describes a study on the capillary limit of a loop heat pipe (LHP) with two evaporators and two condensers. Both theoretical analysis and experimental investigation are conducted. Tests include heat load to one evaporator only, even heat loads to both evaporators and uneven heat load to both evaporators. Results show that after the capillary limit is exceeded, vapor will penetrate through the wick of the weaker evaporator and the compensation chamber (CC) of that evaporator will control the loop operating temperature regardless of which CC has been in control prior to the event Because the evaporator can tolerate vapor bubbles, the loop may continue to work and reach a new steady state at a higher operating temperature. The loop may even function with a modest increase in the heat load past the capillary limit With a heat load to only one evaporator, the capillary limit can be identified by rapid increases in the operating temperature and in the temperature difference between the evaporator and the CC. However, it is more difficult to tell when the capillary limit is exceeded if heat loads are applied to both evaporators. In all cases, the loop can recover by reducing the heat load to the loop.

In prior studies of the current Shuttle Spacesuit (SSA), where basic fabric lay-ups were tested for shielding capabilities, it was found that the fabric portions of the suit give far less protection than previously estimated due to porosity and non-uniformity of fabric and LCVG components. In addition, overall material transmission properties were less than optimum. A number of alternate approaches are being tested to provide more uniform coverage and to use more efficient materials. We will discuss in this paper, recent testing of new material lay-ups/configurations for possible use in future spacesuit designs.

Controlled auto ignition (CAI) is a form of combustion which uses an auto-ignited homogeneous air/fuel mixture but is controlled (or moderated) by regulating the quantity of internal exhaust gas residuals. In this paper, using a fully variable valve train and a newly developed exhaust valve control strategy, we substituted EGR with hot nitrogen or hot air. We found that the internal exhaust gas residuals have both thermal and chemical effects on CAI combustion. To investigate the thermal effect, nitrogen was used as it is a chemically inert gas. Although its temperature was raised to that of the internal exhaust gas residuals during testing, CAI combustion could not be promoted without assistance from a spark in a form of hybrid CAI, thus indicating that exhaust gas residuals have a chemical effect as well. Conversely, with the introduction of oxygen (which in air is a reactant of combustion), no auto ignition combustion occurred until its temperature was increased to 120 degrees C, proving that a minimum thermal condition of an added gas is required to generate auto-ignition. Comparing this EGR introduction, we found that nitrogen has the ability to delay combustion and smooth the pressure increase rate, while oxygen accelerates combustion and turns CAI combustion into an uncontrollable form normally associated with knock. These effects help to explain the contribution of the chemical effect of the EGR on CAI combustion since exhaust gas residuals contain nitrogen as well as chemically active species.

The intumescent material described in this paper expands under high heat or fire conditions to form an insulating sponge. Its composition is based on a blend of high-density polyethylene and chlorinated polyethylene. The material is processed using normal plastic techniques. Tensile properties, heat aging, fluid aging, and thermal properties have been evaluated and are presented. Fire testing using a 1000 °C Bunsen burner as a source, showed that the material does not drip or burn through, even after 30 minutes of exposure. Prototype fire shields made of the intumescent material have been tested on fuel tanks, bulkheads, and wheel well covers. In all cases the intumescent material provided excellent protection. Similar applications are identified for airplanes, motorcycles, industrial and residential buildings. The material is recyclable and can be made from recycled polymers.

In this paper, we will demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of a new class of superlowfriction carbon films in alleviating the wear and scuffing problems associated with the use of low sulfur diesel fuels in fuel delivery systems of advanced diesel engines. Specifically, using a wellestablished diesel fuel lubricity test machine, we will show that with the use of very thin (1micrometer-thick), superlubricious carbon films one can restore lubricity, virtually eliminate scuffing and potential wear failures that can occur in low-sulfur, super-clean, and zero sulfur (Fischer Tropsch) diesel fuels. Test results of our study raise the prospect for using such carbon coatings to solve problems associated with the use of low-sulfur diesel fuels and high injection pressures in future engines.

This paper presents a comprehensive experimental study of the loop operating temperature in a loop heat pipe (LHP) which has two parallel evaporators and two parallel condensers. In a single evaporator LHP, it is well known that the loop operating temperature is a function of the heat load, the sink temperature and the ambient temperature. The objective of the present study emphasizes on the stability of the loop operating temperature and parameters that affects the loop operation. Tests results show that the loop operating temperature is a function of the total system heat load, sink temperature, ambient temperature, and beat load distribution between the two evaporators. Under most conditions, only one compensation chamber (CC) contains two-phase fluid and controls the loop operating temperature, and the other CC is completely filled with liquid. Moreover, as the test condition changes, control of the loop operating temperature often shifted from one CC to another. In spite of complex interactions between various components, the test loop has demonstrated very robust operation even during fast transients.

The operating temperature of a loop heat pipe (LHP) with multiple evaporators is a function of the total heat load, heat load distribution among evaporators, condenser temperature and ambient temperature. Because of the many variables involved, the operating temperature also showed more hystereses than an LHP with a single evaporator. Tight temperature control can be achieved by controlling its compensation chamber (CC) temperatures at the desired set point. This paper describes a test program on active control of the operating temperature in an LHP with two evaporators and two condensers. Temperature control was achieved by heating one or both CC's. Tests performed included start-up, power cycle, sink temperature cycle, CC temperature cycle, and capillary limit. Test results show that, regardless one or two CC's were heated to the set point temperature, one of CC's was always flooded with liquid. The loop could operate successfully at the desired set point temperature under most conditions, including some fast transients. At low heat loads, however, the CC temperature could suddenly increase above the set point temperature, possibly due to a sudden change of the vapor content inside the evaporator core.

Most existing Loop Heat Pipes (LHPs) consist of one single evaporator and one single condenser. LHPs with multiple evaporators will be very desirable for cooling multiple heat sources or a heat source with large thermal footprints. Extending the LHP technology to include multiple evaporators and multiple condensers faces some challenges, including the interaction between individual compensation chambers, operating temperature stability, and adaptability to rapid power and sink temperature transients. This paper describe extensive testing of an LHP with two evaporators and two condensers. Tests performed include start-up, power cycle, sink temperature cycle, reservoir temperature cycle, and capillary limit. Test results showed that the loop could operate successfully under various heat load and sink conditions. The loop operating temperature is a function of the total heat load, the heat load distribution between the two evaporators, and temperatures of the two condenser sinks. Under most conditions, only one reservoir contained two-phase fluid and the other reservoir was completely liquid filled. Moreover, control of the loop operating temperature could shift from one reservoir to the other as the test condition changed.

This paper presents test results of an experimental study of low power operation in a loop heat pipe. The main objective was to demonstrate how changes in the vapor void fraction inside the evaporator core would affect the loop behavior, The fluid inventory and the relative tilt between the evaporator and the compensation chamber were varied so as to create different vapor void fractions in the evaporator core. The effect on the loop start-up, operating temperature, and capillary limit was investigated. Test results indicate that the vapor void fraction inside the evaporator core is the single most important factor in determining the loop operation at low powers.

In this paper, experimental work performed on a breadboard Loop Heat Pipe (LHP) is presented. The test article was built by DCI for the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) instrument on the ICESat spacecraft. The thermal system requirements of GLAS have shown that ammonia cannot be used as the working fluid in this LHP because GLAS radiators could cool to well below the freezing point of ammonia. As a result, propylene was proposed as an alternative LHP working fluid since it has a lower freezing point than ammonia. Both working fluids were tested in the same LHP following a similar test plan in ambient conditions. The thermal performance characteristics of ammonia and propylene LHP's were then compared. In general, the propylene LHP required slightly less startup superheat 5nd less control heater power than the ammonia LHP, The thermal conductance values for the propylene LHP were also lower than the ammonia LHP. Later, the propylene LHP was tested in a thermal vacuum chamber. These tests demonstrated that propylene could meet the GLAS thermal design requirements. Design guidelines were proposed for the next flight-like Development Model (DM) LHP for thermal control of the GLAS instrument.
