Greenland Development, Japanese RV manufacturer, run by Tadaki Fujima, is to manufacture Class C motorhomes in the US, operating from Riverside, Calif. Fujima has been exporting automobiles to Japan from a Gardena, Calif trading company, and invested $500,000 in a motorhome prototype called Matorun, based on a Ford Econoloine chassis.

The closure of Sunset Motors, motorhome retailer, has caused repercussions in the RV industry with flooring lenders and consumers losing $10 million. Manufacturers including Beaver Coaches and Hawkins Motor Coach had to buy back motorhome inventory, and John Deere Credit Co lost $2.5 mil when the company failed.

Summit Industries Inc exports fiberglass-exterior cabins to Japanese recreational vehicle (RV) manufacturer California Dream Co. In addition, California Dream commissioned Summit Industries to develop and manufacture RV cabins specially designed for Japanese. The cabins are narrower than US motorhomes and are equipped with rear doors, self-contained showers, sports equipment storage compartments and electric toilets.

Fleetwood Enterprises Inc plans to acquire at least one more European recreational vehicle company after purchasing an 80% equity in Germany's Niesmann and Bischoff GmbH. Fleetwood plans to develop more lower-priced 'caravans' or lightweight travel trailers for the European market. Executives believe that these acquisitions will be timely since they forecast increased demand for recreational vehicles once the European recession improves.

Recreational vehicle manufacturer Skyline Corp sought the assistance of its dealers in designing its Limited series of towable trailers. Skyline officials report that dealers know more about the travel trailer market and what would attract family buyers. The Limited, which is marketed in California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada for $12,000-$13,000, features spacious interiors, air conditioning and microwave ovens.

Rexhall Industries Inc of Saugus, CA, has had its share of recession woes. However, the manufacturer of motorhomes expects business to rebound in 1992.
