The formation of a thermotropic smectic phase in 3,5-diamino-1-dodecyl-1,2,4-triazole was revealed by polarizing microscopy and DSC. Depending on heating and cooling conditions, transitions between different types of layered packings occur, which was evidenced by dielectric measurements. Quantum-chemical simulation established that the mesomorphism of 1,2,4-triazole derivatives is associated with the formation of supramolecules with a higher polarizability anisotropy. The calculation results confirmed the possibility of lateral hydrogen bonding which favors layered smectic packing.

The stationary phase for gas chromatography on the basis of the chiral R(+)-1′,7′,7′-trimethylbicyclo-[2.2.1]heptano[2′,3′-b]-2,3-dicyanopyrazine (10.4 wt %) and a liquid crystalline 4,4′-dihexyloxyazoxybenzene was studied. The phase transition temperatures of the binary mixture were measured by polarizing microscopy. It was shown that the chiral camphor-substituted 2,3-dicyanopyrazine induces formation of an enantiotropic chiral helically coiled nematic phase in the achiral liquid crystal over a wide temperature range. The gas chromatographic retention times of organic compounds on this sorbents were measured. The structural and chiral selectivity of the stationary phase on the basis of a liquid crystal and camphor-substituted 2,3-dicyanopyrazine was determined. The retention volumes, activity coefficients, and sorption enthalpies and entropies were calculated and analyzed.

The mesomorphic properties of 4-[(E)-(4′-heptyloxyphenyl)diazenyl]phthalonitrile (7O-AB-CN2) were studied by polarization microscopy and DSC method. Liquid crystalline phase formation was observed over a broad temperature range of 92 to 181°C. The influence of 7O-AB-CN2 on the mesomorphic, dielectric, and optical properties of a liquid crystalline mixture of n-alkyloxycyanobiphenyls was examined. Enhancement of the dielectric anisotropy of the mesomorphic composition due to high polarity of 7O-AB-CN2 and its effective inclusion into the liquid crystalline matrix was revealed.

The published data on the preparation of cellulose nitrate are summarized. New sources of cellulosic materials are analyzed. The results of studies on the chemical modification of cellulose nitrate by nucleophilic substitution are presented. The published data on the plasticization of cellulose nitrate are summarized. Modern plasticizing systems and methods for their effectiveness assessment are described.

The rheological properties of nitrocellulose solutions in cyclohexanone in the presence of phthalic and 4-nitrophthalic diester plasticizers were studied by rotational viscometry to reveal a behavior similar to that of Newtonian fluids. The activation parameters of the viscous flow regime were calculated. An influence of nitroplasticizers and dibutyl phthalate on the rheology of nitrocellulose was established. The influence of plasticizers on the mechanical properties of nitrocellulose films was discussed.

Nine derivatives of nitrophthalic acids and nitrophenols were synthesized as potential plasticizers for polymers and structurally characterized by 1H NMR and elemental analysis. The time dependences of the weight loss for the nitro derivatives synthesized and for commercial plasticizers (dibutyl phthalate and dioctyl phthalate) were obtained by gravimetric method at 100oC, and their volatilities and dipole moments were calculated. The resultant nitroplasticizers are considerably less volatile than dibutyl phthalate. Low volatility is associated not so much with high molecular weight as with high polarity. The nitroplasticizers are well compatible with cellulose esters and exhibit low rates of migration from polymer films.

Smectic phase of formyl derivatives of azobenzene has been identified by means of polarization thermomicroscopy using a miscibility criterion. The study of dielectric properties and simulation of dipole moments and Kirkwood correlation factors have revealed that azobenzene and biphenyl derivatives containing hydroxy end group in the aliphatic terminal substituent can form supramolecules and linear associates stabilized by hydrogen bonds. The sorbents based on the studied liquid crystals have exhibited high structural selectivity with respect to isomers of various organic compounds. Thermodynamic manifestations of the specific mesogen–non-mesomorphic sorbate interactions have been revealed.

Inner-sphere replacement of alcohols by imidazole and its derivatives in the complex (acetato)-(tetraphenylporphyrinato)chromium(III) was studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy. The rate constants and activation parameters of the process were calculated. The entering ligand structure was shown to affect the reaction rate, while the alcohol nature (departing ligand) does not influence the kinetic parameters of the process to an appreciable extent. Regression analysis revealed participation of imidazole and ethanol in the rate-determining stages. The kinetic equation for the inner-sphere axial substitution implies interaction of a free alcohol molecule with that coordinated to chromium, followed by replacement of the associate by the heteroring. Mathematical processing of the kinetic data in terms of the proposed solvolytic association-dissociation mechanism gave the rate constants for particular stages of the process and showed an extremal relation between the rate constant and composition of the solvent.

Coordination of imidazole with chromium(II) (acetate)tetraphenylpophyrinate involves consecutive substitution of alcohol molecules in the sixth coordination position of the complex. Axial coordination of imidazole produces no charged species.

The temperature dependences of the dielectric permittivity of 4-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-4'-alkoxyazoxybenzenes (n = 1-10) and 4-propoxy-4'-alkoxyazoxybenzenes (n = 1-10) with mesomorphic properties were measured by dielectrometry. The introductrion of the terminal epoxy group increases the dielectric permittivity and its anisotropy. The dipole moments of molecules of 4-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-4'-alkoxyazoxybenzenes (n = 1-10) and 4-propoxy-4'-alkoxyazoxybenzenes (n = 1-10) were determined by the second Debye method. The epoxy-substituted azoxybenzenes have higher dipole moments than their structural analogs.
