The inselberg vegetation, in general, occurs in patches that vary in size, shape, number of plant species and are surrounded by a bare rock. The present study evaluated the species composition, structural analysis, and species-area relationships of vegetation patches on a neotropical inselberg in Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. A total of 69 vascular plant species, from 31 families, were sampled in 84 vegetation patches varying in area from 0.02 to 500 m2, totaling 0.33 ha. Fabaceae and Cactaceae were the most representative families. Vellozia plicata and Selaginella sellowii presented the highest relative frequencies, relative dominances and importance values and were the most successful in the colonization of the studied rocky outcrop. A linear regression showed a positive correlation between patch size and species richness. Phanerophytes were the predominant life-form, with small patches being less rich in species and dominated by Selaginella mats. Our results suggest that the vegetation patches on the “Morro do Itaoca” inselberg currently represent a refuge against fire and other anthropogenic disturbances for many typical species of the surrounding matrix. In addition, the locality is home to endemic and endangered species, which reinforces its importance for conservation actions. Resumo A vegetação de inselbergs, em geral, ocorre em manchas que variam em tamanho, forma e número de espécies e são cercadas por uma matriz de rocha nua. O presente estudo avaliou a composição de espécies, estrutura e a relação espécie-área em um inselberg neotropical no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, sudeste do Brasil. Foram amostradas 69 espécies de plantas vasculares, de 31 famílias, em 84 manchas de vegetação com área variando de 0,02 a 500 m², totalizando 0,33 ha. Fabaceae e Bromeliaceae foram as famílias mais representativas. Vellozia plicata e Selaginella sellowii apresentaram as maiores frequências relativas, dominâncias relativas e valores de importância e foram as mais bem sucedidas na colonização do afloramento rochoso estudado. A regressão linear mostrou uma correlação positiva entre o tamanho da mancha e a riqueza de espécies, e fanerófito foi a forma de vida predominante, com pequenas manchas apresentando menor riqueza de espécies e dominadas pelos tapetes de Selaginella. Nossos resultados sugerem que os trechos de vegetação no inselberg Morro do Itaoca representam atualmente um refúgio contra incêndios e outros distúrbios antropogênicos para muitas espécies típicas da matriz circundante. Além disso, a localidade abriga espécies endêmicas e ameaçadas de extinção, o que reforça sua importância para as ações de conservação.

Rock outcrop vegetation is recognized worldwide by its singular and biodiverse flora. Campo Rupestre forms hyperdiverse mosaics in rocky environments across a wide latitudinal and altitudinal gradient, with high species turnover at macro- and micro-scales. The surrounding biomes, climate, and geological formations are the main drivers of species turnover on a macro-scale while micro-habitat seems to be the main one determining the peculiarities of the Campo Rupestre on a micro-scale. In a quartzitic Campo Rupestre area we evaluate how the outcrop micro-habitats influence floristic composition and functional traits. The study area is located in the municipality of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. Two main outcrop habitats were considered: top surfaces, with bare rock, shallow depressions and ephemeral ponds; and lateral surfaces, with clefts and crevices. We recorded the vascular species, their respective life-forms (according to Raunkiaer’s system) as well as their coverage in 18 plots. We identified 71 species in 31 families. The floristic spectra and species composition were similar between top and lateral surfaces. There was no significant difference among the vegetational spectra. However, hemicryptophytes were slightly dominant on top, while on the sides chamaephytes were the dominant life-form. Understanding plant adaptations to these environments provides insights into the mechanisms underlying geomorphological heterogeneity in plant communities. Resumo A vegetação de afloramentos rochosos é reconhecida mundialmente pela biodiversidade e singularidade de sua flora. O Campo Rupestre forma mosaicos hiperdiversos em ambientes rochosos distribuídos ao longo de um amplo gradiente latitudinal e altitudinal, com altas taxas de substituição de espécies em macro e microescalas. Em macroescala, os biomas adjacentes, clima e formações geológicas influenciam as taxas de substituição de espécies, enquanto os micro-habitats parecem influenciar as peculiaridades do Campo Rupestre em microescala. Este estudo foi realizado no município de Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Visamos avaliar como os micro-habitats de afloramentos rochosos quartzíticos determinam a composição florística e os atributos funcionais considerando dois habitats principais: superfície superior, com rocha exposta, depressões rasas e poças efêmeras; e superfície lateral, com fendas e fissuras. Espécies vasculares e suas respectivas formas de vida e cobertura foram registradas em 18 parcelas. Identificamos 71 espécies pertencentes a 31 famílias. O espectro florístico e a composição de espécies foram similares entre os habitats. Não houve diferença significativa entre os espectros vegetacionais. Entretanto, hemicriptófitas foram ligeiramente dominantes na superfície superior e caméfitas, na lateral. Compreender as adaptações das plantas a esses ambientes fornece informações sobre os mecanismos subjacentes à heterogeneidade geomorfológica nas comunidades vegetais.

Araceae apresenta uma morfologia e terminologia específica, que pode ocasionar dificuldades de compreensão. Além disso, alguns conceitos adotados para a família, são discordantes entre os especialistas do grupo. Para uma compreensão profunda de tal morfologia, bibliografias especializadas são requeridas. No levantamento das espécies de Araceae do Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD) foram encontradas 13 espécies e oito gêneros (incluindo aqueles com maior diversidade específica, Anthurium e Philodendron). Uma síntese ilustrada da morfologia e terminologia dos gêneros e espécies do PERD é apresentada, visando uma melhor compreensão da morfologia e taxonomia geral da família. The use of specialized terms for some morphological features in Araceae can cause problems in understanding for the general reader and there are not always agreements among taxonomic specialists of the correct usage of some descriptive terminologies. For a complete understanding of this morphology, specialized literature must be consulted. In an inventory of Araceae from the Rio Doce State Park (PERD) the morphology of 13 species and 8 genera was studied (including Anthurium and Philodendron). An illustrated overview of the morphology and terminology of the genera and species from the PERD is presented aiming a better understanding of the morphology and taxonomy of the family.
