- Abstract
From an epidemiological point of view, worldwide epilepsy has a bimodal increase in incidence, both in children and in the elderly. The epilepsy that begins in people over 65 is estimated to be of the order of 80 to 150 per 100,000 people and should be considered a different age group. Epileptic seizures in the elderly represent a clinical challenge for differential diagnosis, as well as to determine the type of crisis. The etiology is mostly structural, predominantly vascular pathology, particularly ischemic, followed by craniocerebral trauma and hippocampal sclerosis. Monotherapy with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is the gold standard. Considering the comorbidities of the elderly, the pharmacokinetics of AEDs, interactions with other drugs and tolerance, there are only class II and III studies for lamotrigine and levetiracetam for the treatment of epileptic seizures in the elderly.
