Introduction: the emerging manufacture technologies for dental restorations have brought new materials with them, such as 3D-printing resins and CAD/CAM discs for the manufacturing of denture bases. Currently, there is no rigorous mechanical characterization for these materials in the literature, apart from the ones reported in technical datasheets. Method: samples for mechanical characterization were manufactured with a conventional heat cure acrylic, a CAD/CAM polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) disc and two 3D-printing resins. The samples were tested in a universal testing machine, according to ISO 20795-1 for flexural strength and elastic modulus. Compression strength was also determined under dry conditions. The average value of each property was calculated (n = 5). One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparisons tests were used. Results: mean flexural strengths ranged from 78.35±2.99 to 87.48±4.47MPa, elastic moduli were between 2125.43±57.05 and 2277.72±58.46MPa, and compression strengths values ranged from 85.03±2.14 to 119.15±2.87MPa. Statistical analyses showed significant differences for flexural and compression strengths but did not show any difference for elastic moduli. Conclusions: all the tested materials met the minimum required specification for mechanical properties given by ISO 20795-1. From a mechanical point of view, the new materials for digital technologies, i.e., CAD/CAM disc and 3D-printing resins, are suitable for denture-base applications.

The use of full ceramic systems to restore teeth in the anterior area is today the preferred method over conventional metal-ceramic systems due to the combination of aesthetic and mechanical properties, in addition to the biocompatibility of these materials and the possibility they offer to minimize tooth preparation. However, due to the sensitivity of the technique while using these systems, especially those that require adhesive cementation, it is highly important to be familiar with their characteristics and indications in order to make the right choice according to each patient’s conditions. The literature reports that the possible clinical failures of these materials are multifactorial, with occlusal instability being one of the causes. Therefore, their biomechanical behavior and the strict implementation of clinical protocols are necessary for successful long-term restorations. This article discusses the various adhesive restorative options to rehabilitate the anterior area and presents their application to a patient’s clinical case with esthetic purposes.

Calcium silicate cements have been used as dental materials for more than twenty years; however, their use in restorative dentistry is more recent. Better mechanical properties and shorter curing times make them suitable for a variety of applications in which they are used as a substitute of dentin, including direct/indirect pulp capping and as cavity base/liner. These materials may also be used to restore enamel temporarily. This article seeks to review the available scientific evidence with a focus on their applications in restorative dentistry. The information was gathered by reviewing original scientific research articles and literature reviews published in journals available in databases such as Medline/Pubmed and Scielo, along with technical information provided by the manufacturers of these cements. This article describes the composition, instructions for use, and curing reaction of calcium silicate cements, as well as the scientific evidence on their applications in restorative dentistry.

Bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs) have recently been introduced on the market, and according to the manufacturers, they could be used to restore cavities in 4- or 5-mm thick increments. This would probably mean a major technique simplification compared to the incremental technique. However, the properties and modes of use of RBCs vary significantly between one and the other. In addition, due to their recent appearance on the market, there are not enough studies that validate the clinical performance of these materials. This article aims to conduct a state of the art review of the available literature on the Medline/Pubmed and ScIELO databases, published between 2000 and 2014, describing the composition, classification, and results of studies currently published.
