Paper presented at the ANPPOM National Meeting 2005, in memoriam to Gerard Béhague, deceased some months before that event. It proposes some assessment on his academic pathway, searching in his formative years the motivations and conceptions that later framed his career as a musicologist. This appraisal emphasizes that the legacy of that great Latin-Americanist lays in the enduring search for the integration between musicology and ethnomusicology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
