ABSTRACT Objective: To construct a middle-range theory for the nursing diagnosis of Sedentary Lifestyle in young adults. Methods: A methodological study for the validation of a nursing diagnosis based on a Middle-Range Theory, carried out in six stages: definition of the approach; definition of theoretical-conceptual models; definition of main concepts; development of a pictorial scheme; construction of propositions; establishment of causal relationships and evidence for practice. The theory construction was operationalized through an integrative review and supported by Roy’s adaptation model. Results: Three essential attributes were identified; 10 antecedents; 7 clinical consequences; a pictogram, 9 propositions, and 11 causal relationships and evidence for practice. Conclusion: The middle-range theory for the nursing diagnosis of Sedentary Lifestyle in young adults was constructed, expanding the understanding of this phenomenon, to be applied in clinical practice by nurses.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to synthesize knowledge regarding risk factors associated with occurrence of adverse event phlebitis in hospitalized adult patients. Methods: an integrative literature review, carried out in the CINAHL, PubMed, Virtual Health Library, Embase, Web of Science and Scopus databases. The stages were carried out independently by two reviewers, and the data were analyzed descriptively. Results: from the analysis of 31 quantitative primary studies, the following risk factors were summarized: length of stay; use of antibiotics; peripheral intravenous catheter dwell time; receive less nursing care; catheter inserted multiple times; patients with infection and comorbidities; presence of pain at catheter insertion site; Teflon® catheter use; reduced patient mobility; quality of patient’s vein; skin elasticity; unsuccessful insertion. Conclusions: it is necessary to standardize the format for measuring occurrence of this adverse event and develop new studies with a higher level of evidence.

ABSTRACT Objective: Develop and validate the content of an instrument for patient risk classification in emergency services of Primary Health Care. Method: The study included two stages: item generation and content validity. A literature review and retrospective analysis of medical records were conducted to create the instrument items. The Content Validity Ratio (CVR) was used to assess agreement among judges during content validation. Results: In the first and second rounds, 75 and 71 judges validated the risk classification instrument, respectively. The minimum adherence score for the latent variable item based on the final number of judges was 0.22 and 0.18; thus, 52 items, divided into three classification categories (red, orange, and yellow), were retained. Conclusion: The instrument was considered valid regarding clarity, relevance, pertinence, and agreement regarding the severity indicated in the item.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to assess the socio-cognitive factors determining adherence to standard precautions by nursing professionals in care practice during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Methods: an analytical cross-sectional study, carried out with 9,039 nursing professionals in Brazil, using an electronic form containing participant sociodemographic, training and work variables, and the Brazilian version of the Standard Precautions Questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used using the statistical software R. Results: participants recognize standard precautions as effective measures to reduce infections and report intention to perform them. Training regarding standard precautions was evidenced as a facilitator of adherence (4.72; SD: 0.73), and problems related to materials (3.78; SD: 1.45) were a hindrance. Conclusions: among the determining factors, facilitating organization presented the highest score, followed by intention to perform. Facilitating and hindering factor identification makes it possible to develop intervention strategies to strengthen patient safety and reduce occupational risks among professionals.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to validate the content of a guidance guide on self-care in the postoperative period of breast surgery for breast cancer. Methods: a methodological study with content validity, carried out with 15 expert nurses and physiotherapists, between May and July 2022. Recruitment took place from the Lattes Platform, using snowball sampling. The level of relevance and representativeness for each item was verified using the Content Validity Index (CVI). It was considered valid when CVI was equal to or greater than 78% (0.78). Results: from the initial total of 37 items, two were excluded, as they had insufficient practical relevance and theoretical relevance, and another five items which, although presenting a CVI lower than the established cut-off, were suggested to be rewritten and grouped with other similar items. Conclusions: thirty items were considered valid and demonstrated important and significant characteristics, constituting suitable material for application in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the bioethical perspectives on mobile tracking device use. Methods: theoretical study based on action research, carried out with eight graduate students from a public university. A focus group was used, with a thematic content analysis methodology with a codebook structure, approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: from the analysis, there was a concern about using devices after the pandemic ended. Using or not the device, rights inherent to humans, legislation and effectiveness of methods deepen interpretations, moving participants from a personalistic conception of the topic to a vision focused on professional implications about the methods. Final considerations: the debate on the impact of using technological devices on health, especially those that imply restriction of rights that refer to individuals’ private life, involves a discussion of a professional nature, in addition to requirement for clear rules on the topic.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to assess risk factors for excess fluid volume in hemodialysis patients. Methods: a retrospective case-control study was conducted. A total of 392 patients (196 cases and 196 controls) from two hemodialysis centers were included. Sociodemographic data and 23 risk factors for excess fluid volume were assessed using a data collection form. Data were analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model. Results: the insufficient knowledge (OR=2.06), excessive fluid intake (OR=2.33), inadequate fluid removal during hemodialysis (OR=2.62) and excessive sodium intake (OR=1.91) risk factors may increase the chance of occurrence of excess fluid volume in hemodialysis patients by approximately two times. Education level (OR=0.95) and age (OR=0.97) are protective factors for excessive fluid volume. Conclusions: knowing these risk factors may help nurses with accurate and rapid diagnostic inference of the risk of excessive fluid volume.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to contribute to the change in understandings and knowledge of the popular system among riverine women about female intimate self-care before and after the application of an educational dynamic. Methods: a qualitative-participative study based on the Sunrise Model. Twenty women registered at a Basic Health Unit on the Combu island, state of Pará, Brazil, participated in the second half of 2022. Semi-structured interviews were conducted before and after the educational dynamic; followed by reflective inductive analysis. Results: these are pointed out: a female mechanism of generational education; the cultural act of bathing as synonymous with intimate self care and disease prevention; intimate care with medicinal herbs; lack of professional system approach to the topic; fear of using “muddy water”; and lack of financial resources to purchase specific products for genitourinary care. Final Considerations: companionship and social factors drive intimate self-care; however, riverine women experience taboos, ignorance, and poverty.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to evaluate the contribution of informal caregivers to the self-care of individuals with heart failure. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted with 87 caregivers from March to October 2022 in the city of João Pessoa/PB. The caregivers’ contribution was assessed using the Caregiver Contribution to Self-Care of Heart Failure Index instrument. Scores ≥ 70 points indicate adequate contribution. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s correlation. Results: the sample consisted of 81.6% female caregivers. Median scores obtained for the self-care contribution scales were: 63.3 for maintenance; 55.5 for management; and 66.6 for confidence. Caregivers never or rarely recommended monitoring body weight, regular physical exercise, extra use of diuretics, and fluid restriction. Conclusions: informal caregivers showed inadequate contribution in the areas of maintenance, management, and confidence in self-care of individuals with heart failure.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the knowledge of professionals working in a Nursing Home about the Nursing Process before and after the awareness workshop. Methods: This is strategic action research, developed with nursing professionals and managers of a Nursing Home in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data were collected between January and June 2023, through semi-structured interviews before and after an awareness workshop. Discursive textual analysis of the data was carried out. Results: The central category “Understanding about the Nursing Process in Nursing Homes” emerged, which was unitized into two units of meaning and three categories of analysis. Conclusion: Data revealed non-use and lack of knowledge of the Nursing Process before awareness raising. Afterwards, a deeper understanding of the topic and its importance was identified. Awareness-raising workshops contribute to transformation of knowledge.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the validity evidence of the internal structure of the Risk Self-Medication Questionnaire Focused on Health Literacy. Methods: a psychometric study with 499 adults. The internal structure was assessed with exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to prove the adjustment. Internal consistency was measured by composite reliability and McDonald’s omega coefficient (ω). Results: the parameters revealed a model of 35 items distributed across four factors, explaining 56% of the total variance, with factor loadings ranging from 0.31 to 0.85 and adequate communalities. ABSTRACT Objective: To build a mid-range theory for the nursing diagnosis Overweight in adolescents and young adults. Methods: A methodological study in the light of the theoretical frameworks of Roy and of Lopes, Silva and Herdman. A total of 3,925 articles were retrieved and assessed using the State of the Art Through Systematic Review software. The final sample consisted of 28 articles. Results: The findings converged to 3 essential attributes, 13 antecedents, and 7 consequences. A mid-range theory was built consisting of an illustrated diagram, 11 propositions, and 12 causal relationships. Final considerations: From the creation of the theory, it was possible to better understand the nursing diagnosis Overweight within the context of adolescents and young adults. Understanding nursing phenomena contributes to nursing science’s advancement and strengthening.

ABSTRACT Objective: to investigate the contributions of applying the Lean methodology to improve work processes in health and nursing and its impact on associated financial aspects. Method: an integrative review, carried out in six databases, whose sample of ten (100.0%) studies was analyzed and summarized descriptively. Results: the outcomes obtained were stratified into: benefits/barriers to Lean Healthcare implementation; economic aspects involving Lean Healthcare implementation; and process improvements through Lean Healthcare implementation. The majority of studies (60.0%) were carried out in university hospitals, contexts that need to continually improve the quality of services provided, generally with scarce and limited resources, which support the viability of maintaining the teaching, research and extension tripod. Conclusion: three (30.0%) studies highlighted the financial aspects associated with Lean methodology application. The others only mentioned the possibility of financial gains through improving processes and reducing waste.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to understand health and education professionals’ perceptions regarding children’s learning difficulties in public schools. Methods: qualitative research, of the participatory action type, linked to Paulo Freire’s Research Itinerary. Forty-five professionals participated, through interviews and a Virtual Culture Circle. The analysis was developed through careful reading, reflection and interpretation of highlighted topics. Results: professionals discussed the (in)visibility of learning difficulties, strategies and resources in the educational sector and the search for solutions in the health sector. It was found that the production of complaints related to school learning is attributed predominantly as an individual problem of children or their family, exempting the educational institution from this process. Final Considerations: greater investment in professional training and development policies is urgently needed to facilitate coordination between sectors, with a view to overcoming outdated pedagogical and health models.

ABSTRACT Objective: To understand the meaning attributed by women with physical disabilities to the health care received and expected during labor and delivery. Methods: Qualitative study, based on Social Network Theory, conducted through an online workshop in April 2022, with the participation of six women with physical disabilities. Data, collected through the focus group technique, underwent thematic content analysis with the assistance of the IRaMuTeQ tool. Results: Three thematic categories emerged: Challenges experienced during pregnancy; The experience within the maternity ward; and, The importance of social networks. The assistance provided by healthcare professionals sometimes differed between what was expected and what was received by women with physical disabilities during labor and delivery. Final Considerations: Experiences were predominantly negative, resulting from inappropriate professional conduct due to ableist attitudes. Support from members of social networks is crucial for preventing stressors.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to map the factors associated with increased lactate levels in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery using extracorporeal circulation. Methods: this is a scoping review carried out in December 2022, across ten data sources. It was prepared in accordance with the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. Results: the most recurrent findings in studies regarding the factors responsible for the increase in lactate were: tissue hypoperfusion, cardiopulmonary bypass time and use of vasoactive drugs. In 95% of studies, increased lactate was related to increased patient mortality. Conclusions: discussing the causes of possible complications in cardiac surgery patients is important for preparing the team and preventing complications, in addition to ensuring quality recovery.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to report an educational technology construction on nursing professionals’ rights. Methods: an experience report on educational technology construction during the crediting of university extension hours in an undergraduate nursing course at a Brazilian public university, between March and June 2023. The Deming cycle was used as a procedural method. Results: four meetings were held between students and extension workers. Eight comic books were produced based on the Code of Ethics for Nurses, addressing professional autonomy, fair remuneration, risk-free work, denial of exposure in the media and others. The Deming cycle proved to be an important strategy for constructing products. Conclusions: nursing professionals’ rights must be discussed and improved. Educational technologies, such as comic books, provide playful and reflective learning.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the leadership competencies of Medical-Surgical Nursing Specialist Nurses. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive study using the Leadership Competencies Questionnaire. 311 Portuguese Medical-Surgical Nursing Specialist Nurses participated. Data analysis involved descriptive and inferential statistical analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 22.0. Results: Study participants had an above-average self-perception on the scale (mean = 3.5) in all leadership roles, recognizing their leadership competencies. The leadership competencies of Medical-Surgical Nursing Specialist Nurses are balanced across all roles: Mentor (5.80 ± 1.02); Coordinator (5.53 ± 0.86); Facilitator (5.38 ± 1.04); Innovator (5.34 ± 0.88); Director (5.31 ± 1.10); Producer (5.30 ± 0.98); Monitor (5.15 ± 1.00); Corrector (4.79 ± 1.29) Conclusions: Specialized nursing practice enhances nurses’ self-perceived leadership competencies. Nurses see themselves as leaders focused on internal support and facilitation of collective effort and opportunities for skill development.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze sleep quality of nurses who worked coping with COVID-19 in scientific evidence. Methods: an integrative review, carried out in seven databases, including studies between December 2021 and June 2022, without language restrictions. The sample consisted of 15 primary studies. Results: nurses working in hospital, intensive care, outpatient care and teaching institutions constitute a vulnerable group for sleep disorders: latency, duration, efficiency and quality. The disorders identified involved insomnia at varying levels of severity: daytime dysfunction and morning sleepiness. Night work and low capacity for self-care were determinants of impaired sleep patterns. Final considerations: the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to greater vulnerability of nurses to changes in sleep, requiring strategies for risk management and well-being promotion.

ABSTRACT Objective: to assess the effects of auriculotherapy on anxiety and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) serum levels in adults assisted in Primary Health Care. Methods: a pre-experimental pilot clinical trial. Information was obtained from 19 patients using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and analysis of BDNF, NSE and S100B serum levels. Results: the pre-intervention anxiety score in the IDATE-Trait was 52.11±6.691 (CV 12.84%) and the assessment after auriculotherapy was significantly lower (43.72±8.141; CV 18.62%; P=0.0007). S100B levels were significantly reduced after auriculotherapy (from 64.03±72.18 to 54.03±68.53 pg/mL; CV 126.8%; P=0.0023). Conclusion: auriculotherapy effectively reduced anxiety levels. It proved to be safe and easy to apply, allowing nurses to perform this technique autonomously. A reduction of S100B was also evidenced, demonstrating possible prevention of neuronal damage.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the concept of elder abuse and identify its respective antecedents, attributes and consequents. Methods: this is a conceptual analysis according to Walker and Avant’s proposition. The search for the concept was mediated by an integrative review in the LILACS, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science and BDENF databases. Results: as antecedents, female, family member, low social support and low income or socioeconomic conditions stand out. Attributes were threats and/or intimidation, intentional use of physical force, using resources without authorization, unwanted sexual activity, offering low insufficient amount of nutrients for older adults and not meeting older adults’ affective/emotional needs. Consequents were psychological disorders, dependence on aggressors, environment of insecurity and damage/loss of human rights or human dignity. Final considerations: the phenomenon under discussion is broad and multifaceted, suggesting expansion of studies related to the theme in order to explore it in detail.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the concept associated with diagnostic proposition Ocular dryness in adult patients hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit, identifying its attributes, antecedents and consequences. Methods: a methodological study carried out through concept analysis, operationalized by scoping review. Results: the analysis of 180 studies allowed the identification of two attributes, 32 antecedents and 12 consequences. The attributes were tear film deficiency and ocular signs and/or symptoms. The prevalent antecedents were incomplete eyelid closure (lagophthalmos) and blinking mechanism decrease. Major consequences included conjunctival hyperemia and decreased tear volume. Conclusions: this study allowed constructing nursing diagnosis Ocular dryness, part of domain 11, class 2, with 12 defining characteristics, 12 related factors, seven populations at risk and 13 associated conditions. This problem-focused proposal may provide targeted care by promoting early detection and implementing interventions that reduce the risk of ocular damage.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the development of children discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and how hospitalization interferes with child development, from parents’ point of view. Methods: a descriptive-exploratory, documentary and qualitative study, carried out with parents of children discharged from the Intensive Care Unit through a telephone survey and supplementation in medical records. Data were analyzed using Bardin’s tool and discussed according to scientific evidence. Results: from parents’ point of view, delay in physical development was not observed, however difficulties in breastfeeding and weight gain were reported. Changes in speech and changes in behavior considered abnormal were also delays in child evolution. Final Considerations: from parents’ point of view, changes in speech may be associated with hospitalization in an Intensive Care Unit, while difficulties related to breastfeeding and delays in cognition may be altered by conditions of prematurity and low weight at birth.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to conduct a cross-cultural adaptation of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF) for mothers of ill and/or preterm infants among Portuguese-speaking mothers in Brazil. Methods: a methodological study was completed, including the translation of the tool, synthesis of translations, review by experts, synthesis, reassessment of experts, back-translation, pre-test, and validation of the content. The study involved 19 participants, including a translator and experts. In addition, 18 mothers from the target population were included in the pre-test. Results: the equivalences of the opinion obtained by the committee of experts were semantic (85%), idiom (89%), cultural (86%), and conceptual (94%). The content validation coefficient (CVC) on the scale was 0.93 for clarity and understanding; 0.89 for practical relevance; 0.92 for relevance; and the average overall CVC was 0.91. Conclusions: the scale was translated and adapted to the Brazilian Portuguese language, which maintained the equivalences and confirmed the content validity.
