Atomic bandpass filters are used in a variety of applications due to their narrow bandwidths and high transmission at specific frequencies. Predominantly, these filters are in the Faraday (Voigt) geometry, using an applied axial (transverse) magnetic field with respect to the laser propagation direction. Recently, there has been interest in filters realized with arbitrary-angle magnetic fields, which have been made by rotating permanent magnets with respect to the k-vector of the interrogating laser beam. However, the magnetic field angle achievable with this method is limited as field uniformity across the cell decreases as the rotation angle increases. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a new method of generating an arbitrary-angle magnetic field, using a solenoid to produce a small, and easily alterable, axial field, in conjunction with fixed permanent magnets to produce a large transverse field. We directly measure the fields produced by both methods, finding them to be very similar over the length of the vapor cell. We then compare the transmission profiles of filters produced using both methods, again finding excellent agreement. Finally, we demonstrate the sensitivity of the filter profile to changing magnetic field angle (solenoid current), which becomes easier to exploit with the much improved angle control and precision offered by our new design. The electromagnetic characteristics of the input cavity with electron beams loaded are measured successfully in an X-band triaxial relativistic klystron amplifier (TKA) with a high frequency electrical probe. To solve the frequency response issue in the X band, a coaxial electrical probe is optimized and inserted obliquely into the input cavity at the designed angle so that the microwaves in the cavity can be sampled and extracted with the required coupling coefficient while the probe does not interfere with the solenoid coil, which is tightly integrated outside the TKA. Besides, the TKA is redesigned as a structure integrally sealed by the solenoid coil, and the secondary sealing induced by probe insertion is implemented on the flange of the solenoid coils rather than on the wall of the TKA, which is conducive to simplifying the coupling structure while maintaining the high vacuum level. The design is examined in a GW level TKA experiment, indicating that microwaves with a power of about 670 MW are generated in the input cavity at a frequency of 8.40 GHz, which is completely consistent with the injected and output microwave frequencies. This paper proposes a drop-on-demand (DOD) system that can produce single droplets of highly repeatable size in the order of 2 mm. This system utilizes an on-the-shelf solenoid injector used in automotive applications. The design methodology is explained along with the necessary measurements and numerical simulations of droplet generation. The invention consists of a solenoid injector that produces monodisperse single or in-series droplets with the help of a developed pulse width modulated signal generator. Mass per injection is measured over a range of supply pressures and injection durations to find the operation window to generate 2 mm droplets. Later, various nozzle geometries are designed and tested by flow simulations. The contracting nozzle is found suitable for generating single droplets, so the design is implemented at the tip of the solenoid injector. The effects of different opening times, pressures, and nozzle's orifice diameters were tested to observe the operating window of the newly designed DOD system and the repeatability of generated droplets by utilizing a coherent circular Hough transform image processing algorithm to measure droplet sizes. The standard deviation of measured diameters is less than 5% of the mean droplet diameter, which is in the range of 1.68–2.07 mm. Next, the voltage and current signals are measured per injection, and exact instants for the initiation and ending for both opening and closing are determined to construct transient mass flow rate functions for flow simulations in which the dependence of droplet formation on the speed of closing is revealed. Liquid handling is a necessary act to deal with liquid samples from scientific labs to industry. However, existing pipetting devices suffer from inaccuracy and low precision when dealing with submicroliter liquids, which significantly affect their applications in low-volume quantitation. In this article, we present an automated liquid pipetting device that can aspirate liquid from microplates and dispense nanoliter droplets with high precision. Liquid aspiration is realized by using a micropump and a solenoid valve, and on-demand nanoliter droplet printing is realized by using a low-cost and interchangeable pipette tip combined with a piezoelectric actuator. Based on the microfluidic printing technology, the volumetric coefficient of variation of the dispensed liquid is less than 2% below 1 µl. A demonstration of concentration dilution for quantitative analysis has been successfully performed using the automated liquid pipetting device, demonstrating its potential in low-volume liquid handling for a wide range of biomedical applications. The dc and ac flux density vs magnetic field B(H) loops of Epstein electrical strips are measured in an IEC type-A permeameter with a high-quality electrical strip wound double yokes of inside length l0 = 0.2 m and inside height h0 = 0.1 m and in a long solenoid. The relevant demagnetizing and eddy-current effects are analyzed, modeled, and discussed. It is concluded that demagnetizing corrected solenoid measurement developed for determining dc B(H) loops of the material cannot be used for the ac case, owing to complicated eddy-current demagnetizing effects. Permeameter-measured ac B(H) loops with H detected by a flat H-coil of length less than l0/2 touching the strip's middle surface may be considered representative of the actual material because H is very uniform along the strip within 3l0/4. Strips with ac B(H) loops thus determined should be used to calibrate the effective magnetic path length lm of Epstein measurements, where a very nonuniform field is applied to the strips. We have developed experimental equipment for observing the Barnett effect, in which mechanical rotation magnetizes an object, at low temperatures. A sample in a rotor is rotated bidirectionally using a temperature-controlled high-pressure gas. The stray field generated from the sample due to the Barnett effect was detected using a fluxgate magnetic sensor with a sensitivity on the order of several picoteslas, even at low temperatures. By replacing the rotor with a solenoid coil, the magnetic susceptibility of the sample was estimated from the stray field to be of the same order of magnitude as that due to the Barnett effect. The Barnett field was estimated using the dipole model. To assess the performance of the setup at low temperatures, measurements were performed on commercial magnetite (Fe3O4) nanogranules. We present in this Note a numerical study on the dynamic performance of a Dilation X-ray Imager (DIXI). The DIXI including a photoelectron tube (PT) and a magnetic solenoid is modeled in 3D space. The initial parameters of the photoelectrons are sampled with a Monte Carlo code. The trajectories of the photoelectrons are calculated by using the particle-in-cell method, and the transit time spread (TTS) and temporal magnification are analyzed in detail. We have designed a PT with a double-microstrip structure and compared the performance of the double-microstrip PT with the traditional single-microstrip PT. The results show that the sensitivity of the TTS and the temporal magnification to the emission time of the photoelectrons can be significantly reduced by using the double-microstrip PT, resulting in an improvement of the time window. The upcoming commissioning of the superconducting (SC) continuous wave Helmholtz linear accelerators first of series cryomodule is going to demand precise alignment of the four internal SC cavities and two SC solenoids. For optimal results, a beam-based alignment method is used to reduce the misalignment of the whole cryomodule, as well as its individual components. A symmetric beam of low transverse emittance is required for this method, which is to be formed by a collimation system. It consists of two separate plates with milled slits, aligned in the horizontal and vertical direction. The collimation system and alignment measurements are proposed, investigated, and realized. The complete setup of this system and its integration into the existing environment at the GSI High Charge State Injector are presented, as well as the results of the recent reference measurements. We present and compare two high-pressure, high-repetition-rate electric-discharge sources for the generation of supersonic beams of fluorine radicals. The sources are based on dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) and plate-discharge units attached to a pulsed solenoid valve. The corrosion-resistant discharge sources were operated with fluorine gas seeded in helium up to backing pressures as high as 30 bars. We employed a (3 + 1) resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization combined with velocity-map imaging for the optimization, characterization, and comparison of the fluorine beams. Additionally, universal femtosecond-laser-ionization detection was used for the characterization of the discharge sources at experimental repetition rates up to 200 Hz. Our results show that the plate discharge is more efficient in F2 dissociation than the DBD by a factor between 8 and 9, whereas the DBD produces internally colder fluorine radicals. Solenoids are frequently used for focusing low-energy beams. In this paper, we show how they can serve as multipurpose diagnostics tools to measure various beam parameters, including energy, emittance, the second moments of the transverse distribution, and the beam position and angle with respect to the solenoid's axis. The energy measurement is based on rotation of the plane of the transverse motion, as opposed to generating dispersion with a dipole. Measurement of the beam trajectory with respect to the solenoid axis is done by analyzing the beam orbit downstream of the solenoid while varying its current. The second moments are calculated by analyzing the beam image on a profile monitor while accounting for the beam rotation caused by the solenoid. In the Dilation X-ray Imager (DIXI), which is characterized by an ultra-short gating time, a magnetic solenoid is used to keep the photoelectrons from defocusing during the drift process. The performance of the magnetic solenoid has an important influence on the performance of the DIXI. We present in this paper the efforts on studying the spatial and temporal performance of the magnetic solenoid used in the DIXI by tracking the photoelectrons with the particle-in-cell method. The initial parameters of the photoelectrons of the Au cathode were sampled with a Monte Carlo code. A novel magnetic solenoid with a shielding shell made of soft iron was proposed. We compared the performance of this solenoid with a normal solenoid. The simulation results of magnetic field distribution, spatial resolution, transit time spread, and temporal distortion were presented in detail to demonstrate that the performance of the DIXI can be significantly improved by using the magnetic solenoid with the proposed iron shell. We report an experimental implementation for neutron transverse polarization analysis that is capable of detecting a small angular change (≪10−3 rad) in neutron spin orientation. This approach is demonstrated for monochromatic beams, and we show that it could be extended to polychromatic neutron beams. Our approach employs a 3He spin filter inside a solenoid with an analyzing direction perpendicular to the incident neutron polarization direction. The method was tested with polarized neutron beams and a spin rotator placed inside a μ-metal shield just upstream of the analyzer. No cryogenic superconducting shields or additional neutron spin manipulations are needed. With a counting detector, we experimentally show that the angular resolution δ θ = 1 / ( P n A N ) rad is only determined by the counting statistics for the total counts N and the product of the neutron polarization Pn and the analyzing power A. With a high-flux neutron beam, 10−6 rad angular sensitivity is feasible within a day. This simple, classical-quantum-limited transverse polarization analysis scheme may reduce the overall complexity of experimental implementation for applications requiring sensitive neutron polarimetry and improve the precision in fundamental science studies and polarized neutron imaging. Using a solenoid with a laser ion source can suppress divergence of the expanding plasma; however, it has been found that the plasma becomes unstable in a certain magnetic field region. In the previous research, instability of the plasma after the solenoid was found. In this study, we investigated how the plasma instability changes inside the solenoid. A Faraday cup was placed in the solenoid, and the unstable magnetic field range was investigated. This experiment was conducted while changing the Faraday cup position from the inlet to the outlet of the solenoid. By increasing the magnetic field strength, the Faraday cup position indicating a condition triggering instability moved toward upstream in the solenoid. In addition, the instability is gradually mitigated by transporting the laser ablation plasma through the rest of the solenoid. In a laser ion source using solenoid field confinement, it is known that an ion beam becomes unstable in the certain range of a magnetic field. Although it is essential to quantify the instability when discussing the unstable region of the beam, it is difficult to evaluate the beam instability by peak current or the amount of charge because an irregular change of temporal profile occurs in addition to the shot-by-shot fluctuation of amplitude. In this study, I propose the most appropriate method to evaluate the beam instability using the difference from an average waveform. The validity of the new method was evaluated by comparing three evaluation methods (variation of maximum value, variation of integral of waveforms, and the proposed evaluation method) with the experimentally obtained waveforms with the stable and unstable regions of a solenoid field. A novel divided solenoid with high homogeneity is designed through linear programming (LP) for actual guiding magnet application in high power microwave devices. During the LP process, current density, magnetic field homogeneity, and total volume of coils are set as variable, constraint condition, and objective function, respectively. The divided solenoid is designed after calculating current density in the available zone where the coil current exists. After comparing the electrical parameters and magnetic field distribution of the conventional and the new solenoid, it is concluded that the inhomogeneity of the new design is reduced from 10% to 0.7%, the central magnetic field is equal, and other factors are in the same range. The upgrade of the EBIS, called ExtendedEBIS, is now in progress in Brookhaven National Laboratory. Two 5T-superconducting solenoids have been placed in series with 200 mm distance from each other for higher trap capacity and production of polarized 3He ions. Since the two superconducting solenoids are used, the field error is expected to be larger. In this research, the field error is estimated based on simulation. It was found that the magnetic field line can be 17 mm off from the center axis at the entrance of the collector, and this offset can be adjusted by three types of correction coils. Additionally, mismatch of the spin direction of polarized 3He due to the misalignment was estimated to be small. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Banc d'Etude et de Tests des Sources d'Ions (BETSI) test bench was built in 2009 for the Spiral2 project. Year after year, upgrades were done on the low energy beam line in order to have a complete injector equipped with 2 solenoids and vacuum chambers with multiple viewports for various kinds of beam-diagnostics. BETSI was designed for a 50 kV high voltage, and all the sources that were installed on the platform were also designed for that voltage. As the advanced light ion source extraction system ions source family is getting larger, the design is made for higher extraction voltages. As the common extraction voltage is 100 kV, the BETSI platform was upgraded to this voltage value. The control-command was upgraded, and at this voltage, a great care on the electromagnetic protections was taken in order to protect the equipment when spark occurs. This paper describes the choice of the upgrade, its installation, and some performances already obtained with a permanent magnet ion source equipped with a large accelerating tube. A Laser Ion Source (LIS) can produce high charge state and high intensity ion beams (∼emA), especially, refractory metallic ion beams, which makes it a promising candidate as an ion source for heavy ion cancer therapy facilities and future accelerator complexes, where pulsed high intensity and high charged heavy ion beams are required. However, it is difficult for the LIS to obtain a long pulse width while ensuring high current intensity, thus limiting the application of the LIS. To solve the conflict, magnetic fields are proposed to confine the expansion of the laser produced plasma. With a solenoid along the normal direction to the target surface, the lateral adiabatic expansion of the laser ablation plasma is suppressed which extends the pulse width of the ion beam effectively. A cryo-cooler based cryogenic test setup has been designed, fabricated, and tested. The setup incorporates two numbers of cryo-coolers, one for sample cooling and the other one for cooling the large magnet coil. The performance and versatility of the setup has been tested using large samples of high-temperature superconductor magnet coil as well as short samples with high current. Several un-calibrated temperature sensors have been calibrated using this system. This paper presents the details of the system along with results of different performance tests. A high speed, high pressure solenoid actuated valve has been developed for use as a driver section for automated shock tubes. The valve is based on a prior design, and significant improvements in the design of the valve are described. The new design retains the performance of prior versions of the valve and creates very reproducible reaction conditions in the shock tube, which are illustrated by several thousand experiments. We conduct a comprehensive set of tests of performance of surface coils used for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of quasi-2-dimensional samples. We report 115In and 31PNMR measurements on In P, semi-conducting thin substrate samples. Surface coils of both zig-zag meander-line and concentric spiral geometries were used. We compare reception sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio of the NMR signal obtained by using surface-type coils to that obtained by standard solenoid-type coils. As expected, we find that surface-type coils provide better sensitivity for NMR study of thin film samples. Moreover, we compare the reception sensitivity of different types of the surface coils. We identify the optimal geometry of the surface coils for a given application and/or direction of the applied magnetic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, an electronic system is presented to measure the force applied by a solenoid. The originality of the work is focused on the use of a magnetoresistive current sensor to provide the isolation barrier needed in the actual industrial plant where the solenoids are working. The design of the electronic system is presented as well as experimental measurements as a result of a calibration process showing a negligible hysteresis with that specific sensor. We developed highly sensitive image-current detection systems based on superconducting toroidal coils and ultra-low noise amplifiers for non-destructive measurements of the axial frequencies (550-800 kHz) of single antiprotons stored in a cryogenic multi-Penning-trap system. The unloaded superconducting tuned circuits show quality factors of up to 500 000, which corresponds to a factor of 10 improvement compared to our previously used solenoidal designs. Connected to ultra-low noise amplifiers and the trap system, signal-to-noise-ratios of 30 dB at quality factors of >20 000 are achieved. In addition, we have developed a superconducting switch which allows continuous tuning of the detector's quality factor and to sensitively tune the particle-detector interaction. This allowed us to improve frequency resolution at constant averaging time, which is crucial for single antiproton spintransition spectroscopy experiments, as well as improved measurements of the proton-to-antiproton charge-to-mass ratio. The magnetic penetration depth (λ) in thin superconducting films is usually measured by the mutual inductance technique. The accuracy of this method has been limited by uncertainties in the geometry of the solenoids and in the film position and thickness, by parasitic coupling between the coils, etc. Here, we present several improvements in the apparatus and the method. To ensure the precise thickness of the superconducting layer, we engineer the films at atomic level using atomic-layerby- layer molecular beam epitaxy. In this way, we also eliminate secondary-phase precipitates, grain boundaries, and pinholes that are common with other deposition methods and that artificially increase the field transmission and thus the apparent λ. For better reproducibility, the thermal stability of our closed-cycle cryocooler used to control the temperature of the mutual inductance measurement has been significantly improved by inserting a custom-built thermal conductivity damper. Next, to minimize the uncertainties in the geometry, we fused a pair of small yet precisely wound coils into a single sapphire block machined to a high precision. The sample is spring-loaded to exactly the same position with respect to the solenoids. Altogether, we can measure the absolute value of λ with the accuracy better than ±1%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To determine the anelastic properties of materials of the Earth's interior, a short-period cyclic loading system was installed for in situ X-ray radiographic observation under high pressure to the multi-anvil deformation DIA press at the bending magnet beam line BL04B1 at SPring-8. The hydraulic system equipped with a piston controlled by a solenoid was designed so as to enable producing smooth sinusoidal stress in a wide range of oscillation period from 0.2 to 100 s and generating variable amplitudes. Time resolved X-ray radiography imaging of the sample and reference material provides their strain as a function of time during cyclic loading. A synchrotron X-ray radiation source allows us to resolve their strain variation with time even at the short period (<1 s). The minimum resolved strain is as small as 10-4, and the shortest oscillation period to detect small strain is 0.5 s. Preliminary experimental results exhibited that the new system can resolve attenuation factor Q-1 at upper mantle conditions. In this paper, the design and modeling of a magnetically driven electric-field sensor for non-contact DC voltage measurement are presented. The magnetic drive structure of the sensor is composed of a small solenoid and a cantilever beam with a cylindrical magnet mounted on it. The interaction of the magnet and the solenoid provides the magnetic driving force for the sensor. Employing magnetic drive structure brings the benefits of low driving voltage and large vibrating displacement, which consequently results in less interference from the drive signal. In the theoretical analyses, the capacitance calculation model between the wire and the sensing electrode is built. The expression of the magnetic driving force is derived by the method of linear fitting. The dynamical model of the magnetic-driven cantilever beam actuator is built by using Euler-Bernoulli theory and distributed parameter method. Taking advantage of the theoretical model, the output voltage of proposed sensor can be predicted. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. The proposed sensor shows a favorable linear response characteristic. The proposed sensor has a measuring sensitivity of 9.87 μV/(V/m) at an excitation current of 37.5 mA. A kind of fast shutter for protecting the diagnosis devices in Z pinch experiments is introduced in this paper. The shutter is composed of a pulling rod, a magnetic core, and a solenoid. Different from the traditional coils which were used at the voltage of 220 V, the solenoid we used must endure the high voltage of 5-10 kV and the deformation which maybe caused by the 5-10 T intense magnetic field. A creative configuration for the solenoid is developed including the winding guide, insulating sleeve, and stainless-steel sleeve. The experimental results show that the configuration of the solenoid is effective. The velocity of the valve is nearly 19 m/s and the time jitter of the shutdown is within 75 μs. This paper presents results, experimental and analytical, of the electrical characteristics of GdBCO single-pancake coils co-wound with a brass tape as metallic insulation (MI coil). The GdBCO pancakes were subjected to sudden discharge, charge-discharge, and over-current tests. The sudden discharge and charge-discharge test results of the MI coil demonstrated that MI coils can be charged and discharged significantly faster than non-insulated coils that are wound only with GdBCO tape. In over-current tests at 150 A (1.25Ic), the MI coil exhibited better electrical behavior, i.e., self-protecting features, than its counterpart co-wound with Kapton tape, an insulator. Moreover, the experimental and analytical results are in agreement, validating the use of a concise equivalent parallel-RL circuit model for the MI coil to characterize its electrical behavior. Overall, the MI winding technique is highly promising to help build compact, mechanically robust, and self-protecting magnets composed of REBCO pancake coils. With no organic material in the winding, MI REBCO pancakes will be immune to neutron radiation damage, making the MI winding technique a viable option for fusion reactors, such as for toroidal field, poroidal field magnets, and central solenoid. A new method for evaluating thrust with high-frequency variations beyond the resonant frequency using a disturbance observer is presented. Setpoint control is applied to a conventional pendulum-type thrust stand to keep the pendulum at the target position using a solenoid actuator. During control, pendulum acceleration and solenoid-actuator current are measured, and the disturbance observer determines thrust with a wide range of frequency variations. The method allows thrust to be evaluated not only with constant and low-frequency variations, but also with high-frequency variations outside the resonant frequency. A thrust measurement device is prototyped to investigate accuracy over a wide frequency range from 0 to 100 Hz and the effects of the proportional-derivative-integral (PID) controller design. Calibration yields thrust measurement errors of 20% below 90 Hz. PID controller design has a smaller influence on the accuracy of the proposed method than the conventional null-balance method, so the proposed method requires the same stability under PID control as that for the null-balance method. A 2.45 GHz microwave ion source together with a beam transport system has been developed at VECC to study the problems related with the injection of high current beam into a compact cyclotron. This paper presents the results of beam profile measurement of high current proton beam at different degrees of space charge neutralisation with the introduction of neon gas in the beam line using a fine leak valve. The beam profiles have been measured at different pressures in the beam line by capturing the residual gas fluorescence using a CCD camera. It has been found that with space charge compensation at the present current level (~5 mA at 75 keV), it is possible to reduce the beam spot size by ~34%. We have measured the variation of beam profile as a function of the current in the solenoid magnet under the neutralised condition and used these data to estimate the rms emittance of the beam. Simulations performed using equivalent Kapchinsky-Vladimirsky beam envelope equations with space charge neutralization factor are also presented to interpret the experimental results. Positrons are accumulated within a Penning trap designed to make more precise measurements of the positron and electron magnetic moments. The retractable radioactive source used is weak enough to require no license for handling radioactive material, and the radiation dosage 1 m from the source gives an exposure several times smaller than the average radiation dose on the earth's surface. A plasma current up to 15 kA has been driven with outer ohmic heating (OH) coils in the STOR-M iron core tokamak. Even when the inner OH coil is disconnected, the outer OH coils alone can induce the plasma current as primary windings and initial breakdown are even easier in this coil layout. This result suggests a possibility to use an iron core in a spherical tokamak to start up the plasma current without a central solenoid. The radial spread of charged particles emitted from a point source in a magnetic field is a potential source of systematic error for any experiment where magnetic fields guide charged particles to detectors with finite size. Assuming uniform probability as a function of the phase along the particle's helical trajectory, an analytic solution for the radial probability distribution function follows which applies to experiments in which particles are generated throughout a volume that spans a sufficient length along the axis of a homogeneous magnetic field. This approach leads to the same result as a different derivation given by Dubbers et al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res., Sect. A 763, 112-119 (2014). But the constant phase approximation does not strictly apply to finite source volumes or fixed positions, which lead to local maxima in the radial distribution of emitted particles at the plane of the detector. A simple method is given to calculate such distributions, then the effect is demonstrated with data from a 207Bi electron-conversion source in the superconducting solenoid magnet spectrometer of the Ultracold Neutron facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Results from the operation of an electromagnetic valve, that does not incorporate ferromagnetic materials, are presented. Image currents induced on a conducting disc placed near a pancake solenoid cause it to move away from the solenoid and open the vacuum seal. A new and important design feature is the use of Lip Seals for the sliding piston. The pressure rise in the test chamber is measured directly using a fast time response Baratron gauge. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on designing solenoid together with the corresponding power supply system to excite pulsed magnetic field required for high power microwave generators. Particularly, a solenoid is designed and the excited magnetic field is applied to a Ku-band overmoded Cerenkov generator. It is found in experiment that the electron beam is properly guided by the magnetic field and a 1.1 GW high power microwave is achieved at a central frequency of 13.76 GHz. Pulsed solenoid system has the advantages of compactness and low energy consumption, which are of great interest for repetitive operation. The design work for 2nd harmonic 95 GHz, 50 kW gyrotron based on continuous operation copper solenoid is presented. Thermionic magnetron injection gun specifications were calculated according to the linear trade off equation, and simulated with CST program. Numerical code is used for cavity design using the non-uniform string equation as well as particle motion in the "cold" cavity field. The mode TE02 with low Ohmic losses in the cavity walls was chosen as the operating mode. The Solenoid is designed to induce magnetic field of 1.8 T over a length of 40 mm in the interaction region with homogeneity of ±0.34%. The solenoid has six concentric cylindrical segments (and two correction segments) of copper foil windings separated by water channels for cooling. The predicted temperature in continuous operation is below 93 °C. The Electron Beam Ion Trap (EBIT) of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University is used as a charge booster and injector for the currently commissioned rare isotope re-accelerator facility ReA. This EBIT charge breeder is equipped with a unique superconducting magnet configuration, a combination of a solenoid and a pair of Helmholtz coils, allowing for a direct observation of the ion cloud while maintaining the advantages of a long ion trapping region. The current density of its electron beam is a key factor for efficient capture and fast charge breeding of continuously injected, short-lived isotope beams. It depends on the radius of the magnetically compressed electron beam. This radius is measured by imaging the highly charged ion cloud trapped within the electron beam with a pinhole camera, which is sensitive to X-rays emitted by the ions with photon energies between 2 keV and 10 keV. The 80%-radius of a cylindrical 800 mA electron beam with an energy of 15 keV is determined to be r80% = (212 ± 19)μm in a 4 T magnetic field. From this, a current density of j = (454 ± 83)A/cm² is derived. These results are in good agreement with electron beam trajectory simulations performed with TriComp and serve as a test for future electron gun design developments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We discuss an innovative new high-performance apparatus for performing low-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxation times and diffusion measurements on fluids at very high pressures and high temperatures. The apparatus sensor design and electronics specifications allow for dual deployment either in a fluid sampling well logging tool or in a laboratory. The sensor and electronics were designed to function in both environments. This paper discusses the use of the apparatus in a laboratory environment. The operating temperature and pressure limits, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the new system exceed by a very wide margin what is currently possible. This major breakthrough was made possible by a revolutionary new sensor design that breaks many of the rules of conventional high pressure NMR sensor design. A metallic sample holder capable of operating at high pressures and temperatures is provided to contain the fluid under study. The sample holder has been successfully tested for operation up to 36 Kpsi. A solenoid coil wound on a slotted titanium frame sits inside the metallic sample holder and serves as an antenna to transmit RF pulses and receive NMR signals. The metal sample holder is sandwiched between a pair of gradient coils which provide a linear field gradient for pulsed field gradient diffusion measurements. The assembly sits in the bore of a low-gradient permanent magnet. The system can operate over a wide frequency range without the need for tuning the antenna to the Larmor frequency. The SNR measured on a water sample at room temperature is more than 15 times greater than that of the commercial low-field system in our laboratory. Thus, the new system provides for data acquisition more than 200 times faster than was previously possible. Laboratory NMR measurements of relaxations times and diffusion coefficients performed at pressures up to 25 Kpsi and at temperatures up to 175 °C with crude oils enlivened with dissolved hydrocarbon gases (referred to as "live oils") are shown. This is the first time low-field NMR measurements have been performed at such high temperatures and pressures on live crude oil samples. We discuss the details of the apparatus design, tuning, calibration, and operation. NMR data acquired at multiple temperatures and pressures on a live oil sample are discussed. A new set of vanes of radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator was commissioned using highly charged iron beam. To supply high intensity heavy ion beams to the RFQ, direct plasma injection scheme (DPIS) with a confinement solenoid was adopted. One of the difficulties to utilize the combination of DPIS and a solenoid field is a complexity of electro magnetic field at the beam extraction region, since biasing high static electric field for ion extraction, RFQ focusing field, and the solenoid magnetic field fill the same space simultaneously. To mitigate the complexity, a newly designed magnetic field clamps were used. The intense iron beam was observed with bunched structure and the total accelerated current reached 2.5 nC. A new magnetic configuration is proposed for the suppression of co-extracted electrons in a negative-ion accelerator. This configuration is produced by an arrangement of permanent magnets embedded in one accelerator grid and creates an asymmetric local magnetic field on the upstream and downstream sides of this grid. Thanks to the "concentration" of the magnetic field on the upstream side of the grid, the resulting deflection of the ions due to magnetic field can be "intrinsically" cancelled by calibrating the configuration of permanent magnets. Controlled manipulation of neutron spin is a critical tool for many neutron scattering techniques. We have constructed current-sheet, neutron spin flippers for use in Spin Echo Scattering Angle Measurement (SESAME) that comprise pairs of open-faced solenoids which introduce an abrupt field reversal at a shared boundary. The magnetic fields generated by the coils have been mapped and compared with both an analytical approximation and a numerical boundary integral calculation. The agreement is generally good, allowing the former method to be used for rapid calculations of the Larmor phase acquired by a neutron passing through the flipper. The evolution of the neutron spin through the current sheets inside the flipper is calculated for various geometries of the current-carrying conductors, including different wire shapes, arrangements, and common imperfections. The flipping efficiency is found to be sensitive to gaps between wires and between current sheets. SESAME requires flippers with high fields and flipping planes inclined to the neutron beam. Magnetic emittance suppression was demonstrated using a bucking coil for a dc photocathode electron gun. The magnetic emittance is derived from a leakage magnetic field on the cathode surface originating from a solenoid lens, and is important for realizing a high brightness dc photocathode electron gun. In order to solve this problem, a bucking coil integrated solenoid lens has been developed. The solenoid lens consists of a main coil, a bucking coil, and a pure iron yoke. The bucking coil and the main coil are integrated in the same yoke in order to prevent distortion of the magnetic field due to misalignment of the two coils. A new magneto-optical system has been developed to expand the range of high speed real time magneto-optical imaging. A special source for the external magnetic field has also been designed, using a pump solenoid to rapidly excite the field coil. Together with careful modifications of the cryostat, to reduce eddy currents, ramping rates reaching 3000 T/s have been achieved. Using a powerful laser as the light source, a custom designed optical assembly, and a high speed digital camera, real time imaging rates up to 30 000 frames per seconds have been demonstrated. We present a pulsed-magnet system that enables x-ray single-crystal diffraction in addition to powder and spectroscopic studies with the magnetic field applied on or close to the scattering plane. The apparatus consists of a single large-bore solenoid, cooled by liquid nitrogen. A second independent closed-cycle cryostat is used for cooling samples near liquid helium temperatures. Pulsed magnetic fields close to ∼30 T with a zero-to-peak-field rise time of ∼2.9 ms are generated by discharging a 40 kJ capacitor bank into the magnet coil. The unique characteristic of this instrument is the preservation of maximum scattering angle (∼23.6°) on the entrance and exit sides of the magnet bore by virtue of a novel double-funnel insert. This instrument will facilitate x-ray diffraction and spectroscopic studies that are impractical, if not impossible, to perform using split-pair and narrow-opening solenoid magnets. A thrust stand calibration technique for use in testing repetitively pulsed electric thrusters for in-space propulsion has been developed and tested using a modified hanging pendulum thrust stand. In the implementation of this technique, current pulses are applied to a solenoid to produce a pulsed magnetic field that acts against a permanent magnet mounted to the thrust stand pendulum arm. The force on the magnet is applied in this non-contact manner, with the entire pulsed force transferred to the pendulum arm through a piezoelectric force transducer to provide a time-accurate force measurement. Modeling of the pendulum arm dynamics reveals that after an initial transient in thrust stand motion the quasi-steady average deflection of the thrust stand arm away from the unforced or 'zero' position can be related to the average applied force through a simple linear Hooke's law relationship. Modeling demonstrates that this technique is universally applicable except when the pulsing period is increased to the point where it approaches the period of natural thrust stand motion. Calibration data were obtained using a modified hanging pendulum thrust stand previously used for steady-state thrust measurements. Data were obtained for varying impulse bit at constant pulse frequency and for varying pulse frequency. The two data sets exhibit excellent quantitative agreement with each other. The Front End Test Stand (FETS) is located at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and aims for a high current, fast chopped 3 MeV H- ion beam suitable for future high power proton accelerators like ISIS upgrade. The main components of the front end are the Penning ion source, a low energy beam transport line, an radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) and a medium energy beam transport (MEBT) providing also a chopper section and rebuncher. FETS is in the stage of commissioning its low energy beam transport (LEBT) line consisting of three solenoids. The LEBT has to transport an H- high current beam (up to 60 mA) at 65 keV. This is the injection energy of the beam into the RFQ. The main diagnostics are slit-slit emittance scanners for each transversal plane. For optimizing the matching to the RFQ, experiments have been performed with a variety of solenoid settings to better understand the actual beam transport. A new class of electron microscope has been developed for the chemical microanalysis of a wide range of real world samples using photoelectron spectroscopy. Highly structured, three-dimensional samples, such as fiber mats and fracture surfaces can be imaged, as well as insulators and magnetic materials. The new microscope uses the vector potential field from a solenoid magnet as a spatial reference for imaging. A hexapole magnet for a 14.5 GHz electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source, where the maximum radial field on the wall of the plasma chamber is higher than 1.1 T, has been designed and fabricated. The size of the outer diameter and the number of the sector of the hexapole are optimized for a 14.5 GHz ECR ion source with the help of a three-dimensional field calculation code. Moreover, to make a strong and long-life magnet against the demagnetic field on the hexapole multilayered structure in radial and axial directions is considered in the design. The distributions of the demagnetic fields are estimated by the calculation of the radial field in a hexapole magnet and the axial field from the solenoid coils. Proper grades of magnetic materials depending on the strength of the demagnetic field are applied for the different layers. The magnetic fields of the measured and calculated ones have been compared. The first emittance measurements with a new test injector facility (HOSTI) at GSI, designed for optimization of high current beam injection scheme, are discussed. The emittance of the ion beam (88 kV, Ar1+ ions) was investigated as a function of various parameters related to the ion source, extraction, and postacceleration systems and the optimum parameters for future low energy beam transport line are concluded. The preliminary results of the emittance measurements with superconducting solenoid are presented. As part of a new heavy ion preinjector that will supply beams for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Space Radiation Laboratory, construction of a new electron beam ion source (EBIS) is now being completed. This source, based on the successful prototype Brookhaven National Laboratory Test EBIS, is designed to produce milliampere level currents of all ion species, with q/m=(1/6)-(1/2). Among the major components of this source are a 5 T, 2-m-long, 204 mm diameter warm bore superconducting solenoid, an electron gun designed to operate at a nominal current of 10 A, and an electron collector designed to dissipate ∼300 kW of peak power. Careful attention has been paid to the design of the vacuum system, since a pressure of 10-10 Torr is required in the trap region. The source includes several differential pumping stages, the trap can be baked to 400 C, and there are non-evaporable getter strips in the trap region. Power supplies include a 15 A, 15 kV electron collector power supply, and fast switchable power supplies for most of the 16 electrodes used for varying the trap potential distribution for ion injection, confinement, and extraction. The EBIS source and all EBIS power supplies sit on an isolated platform, which is pulsed up to a maximum of 100 kV during ion extraction.
