Abstract

Experiments to obtain time-resolved, soft-x-ray emission from laser-driven plasmas are succinctly described. The spectra (0.19 kev ≤ hv ≤ 1.3 keV) at various times have been deconvolved and energy integrated to obtain time-resolved yields from Au disk targets. The temporal profiles of the total thermal x-ray output power follow the overall laser temporal shape but do not show the high-frequency fluctuation observed in the laser pulse. The behavior of the ratio of the instantaneous x-ray yields over the laser absorption is studied. The studies were done at the LLNL Nova laser facility. Single pulses and pulses in "picket fence" configuration were used to heat the gold targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Fluorescence measurements of the M-band photon emission from a laser-irradiated gold disk.

Abstract

Gold M-band x rays with energies above the sulfur K edge of 2.472 kev create sulfur K[sub α] fluorescence with a quantum efficiency of 8.1%. The sulfur fluorescer was a 600 × 1500-µm rectangle about 1100 µm from the gold plate. It was 25 µm of C[sub 6]H[sub 4]S plastic shielded by 50 µm of beryllium. The absolute brightnesses of both the M-band spectrum and of the fluorescence line were measured by separate spectrographs. The spectrograph measuring the fluorescence did not have a direct line of sight to the hot gold. These measurements were made with 3512-Å laser light irradiating the gold plate for 1 ns over a number of intensities between 2 × 10[sup 14] and 10[sup 15] W/cm². [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have made absolute measurements of x-ray spectra from 0.1-1.5 kev produced by plasmas from targets irradiated by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Nova laser. These measurements were made using a 15-channel K- and L-edge filtered x-ray diode system. Valid interpretation of the results from this type of diagnostic requires some care in eliminating the effect of channel response at photon energies higher than the absorption edge. Significant errors can occur if this is disregarded. We will discuss the techniques used and the magnitude of the effects observed. Integrated x-ray energy in the 1.5-3-kev region is inferred from the results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
