New innovations in single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) have revolutionized optical imaging, enabling the characterization of biological structures and interactions with unprecedented detail and resolution. However, multi-color or hyperspectral SMLM can pose particular challenges which affect image quality and data interpretation, such as unequal photophysical performance of fluorophores and non-linear image registration issues, which arise as two emission channels travel along different optical paths to reach the detector. In addition, using evanescent-wave based approaches (Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence: TIRF) where beam shape, decay depth, and power density are important, different illumination wavelengths can lead to unequal imaging depth across multiple channels on the same sample. A potential useful approach would be to use a single excitation wavelength to perform hyperspectral localization imaging. We report herein on the use of a variable angle tunable thin-film filter to spectrally isolate far-red emitting fluorophores. This solution was integrated into a commercial microscope platform using an open-source hardware design, enabling the rapid acquisition of SMLM images arising from fluorescence emission captured within ∼15 nm to 20 nm spectral windows (or detection bands). By characterizing intensity distributions, average intensities, and localization frequency through a range of spectral windows, we investigated several far-red emitting fluorophores and identified an optimal fluorophore pair for two-color SMLM using this method. Fluorophore crosstalk between the different spectral windows was assessed by examining the effect of varying the photon output thresholds on the localization frequency and fraction of data recovered. The utility of this approach was demonstrated by hyper-spectral super-resolution imaging of the interaction between the mitochondrial protein, TOM20, and the peroxisomal protein, PMP70.

High-throughput experiment can significantly accelerate the materials research efficiency. Thanks to national efforts, the Materials Genome Initiative further promotes the development of high-throughput experimental technology. A multi-channel fiber optical spectrometer has been designed and developed by us for high-throughput characterization of photoluminescence (PL) properties. It can quickly and automatically detect the PL spectrum, Commission International de l'Eclairage chromaticity, and PL intensity over time for luminescent materials under a given condition. The multi-channel fiber optical spectrometer synergistically combines a sample library holder, multiple modular excitation sources, multiple spectrometers, and Coral software, so it can measure and analyze multiple samples simultaneously. The number of channels in the multi-channel fiber optical spectrometer can be added or subtracted as required. Various modular light-emitting diode or laser diode excitation sources with the wavelength from 370 nm to 980 nm and corresponding filters can be provided according to the measurement need of different luminescent materials. The monitoring wavelength of the currently used fiber optical spectrometer is from 300 nm to 1000 nm. For example, the PL spectral measurement of 54 samples in a {6 × 9} array is completed in only about 30 min by using a representative triple-channel fiber optical spectrometer. The designed multi-channel fiber optical spectrometer facility not only makes PL measurements faster and more intuitive but is also easy to popularize for wide users.

Small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) is a well established technique to detect nanometer scale structures in matter. In a typical setup, this diagnostic uses a detector with a direct line of sight to the scattering target. However, in the harsh environment of high intensity laser interaction, intense secondary radiation and high-energy particles are generated. Such a setup would therefore suffer a significant increase of noise due to this background, which could eventually prevent such measurements. In this paper, we present a novel tool consisting of a mosaic graphite crystal that works as a mirror for the SAXS signal and allows us to position the detector behind appropriate shielding. This paper studies the performance of this mirror both by experiment at the European XFEL (X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility) laboratory and by simulations.

Materials and structures of a collimator for a new neutron emission profile monitor in JT-60SA are examined through Monte Carlo simulations using the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code. First, the shielding properties of various material combinations are compared in order to determine a combination with high shielding performances against both neutrons and gamma-rays. It is found that a collimator consisting of borated polyethylene and lead has a high shielding performance against neutrons. Moreover, a high shielding performance against gamma-rays is obtained when a lead pipe with a radial thickness of 0.01 m is inserted into a collimation tube. Second, we demonstrate that it is possible to improve the spatial resolution to a desired level by installing a thin tubular extension structure that fits into the limited space available between the main collimator block and the tokamak device. We present the design and construction of a new experimental apparatus for the trapping of single Ba$^+$ ions in the center of curvature of an optical-quality hemispherical mirror. We describe the layout, fabrication and integration of the full setup, consisting of a high-optical access monolithic `3D-printed' Paul trap, the hemispherical mirror, a diffraction-limited in-vacuum lens (NA = 0.7) for collection of atomic fluorescence and a state-of-the art ultra-high vacuum vessel. This new apparatus enables the study of quantum electrodynamics effects such as strong inhibition and enhancement of spontaneous emission, and achieves a collection efficiency of the emitted light in a single optical mode of 31%., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures

We present an effective approach using a matched pair of polymer-based condenser–objective lenses to build a compact full-field x-ray microscope with a high spatial resolution. A unique condenser comprising arrays of high-aspect-ratio prisms with equilateral cross section is used for uniformly illuminating samples over a large field of view (FOV) from all angles, which match the acceptance of an objective made of interdigitated orthogonal rows of one-dimensional lenses. State-of-the-art Talbot grating interferometry used to characterize these lenses for the first time revealed excellent focusing properties and minimal wavefront distortions. Using a specific lens pair designed for 20 keV x rays, short-exposure times, and image registration with a cross-correlation technique, we circumvent vibrational instabilities to obtain distortion-free images with a uniform resolution of 240 nm (smallest resolvable line pair) over a large FOV, 80 × 80 µm2 in extent. The results were contrasted with those collected using commercial two-dimensional parabolic lenses with a smaller FOV. This approach implemented on a diffractometer would enable diffraction-contrast or dark-field microscopy for fast observations of “mesoscopic” phenomena in real space complementing reciprocal-space studies using diffraction on the same instrument.

This note investigates how small changes in the protrusion depth of a pressure transducer affect the pressure measurement of a moving shock wave. Measurements are undertaken with Kistler, Kulite, and PCB sensors in flush, recessed, and protruded sensor positions. Measurements of both absolute pressure and Mach number are shown to be insensitive to sensor protrusion depth. An assessment of sensor response time indicates a significantly shorter reaction time for the Kulite and PCB sensors compared with the Kistler sensor.

An important consideration when designing a magnetostatic cavities for various applications is to maximize the ratio of the volume of field homogeneity to overall size of the solenoid. We report a design of a magnetically shielded solenoid that significantly improves the transverse field gradient averaged over a volume of 1000 cm(3) by placing compensation coils around the holes in the mu-metal end caps rather than the conventional design in which the compensation coils are placed on the main solenoid. Our application is polarized (3)He-based neutron spin filters and our goal was to minimize the volume-averaged transverse field gradient, thereby the gradient induced relaxation time, over a (3)He cell. For solenoids with end cap holes of different sizes, additional improvements in the field gradient were accomplished by introducing non-identical compensation coils centered around the non-identical holes in the end caps. The improved designs have yielded an overall factor of 7 decrease in the gradient in the solenoid, hence a factor of 50 increase in the gradient induced relaxation time of the (3)He polarization. The results from both simulation and experiments for the development of several such solenoids are presented. Whereas our focus is on the development of magnetically shielded solenoids for (3)He neutron spin filters, the approach can be applied for other applications demanding for a high level of field homogeneity over a large volume.

A four-electrode plasma based triggered spark gap switch is designed for pulsed power applications, which consists of an anode and cathode of a main spark gap switch and an anode and cathode for a trigger pin. The anode and cathode of the trigger pin are coaxially arranged, and the gap between electrodes is 25 μm. A trigger voltage of 200 V is applied across the trigger gap with the help of a switching insulated gate bipolar transistor. With the breakdown of the trigger gap, plasma is generated, which is injected into the main gap. The trigger pin is placed axisymmetric to the main spark gap in the cathode. The main discharge channel of the spark gap has 0.6 mm space between two electrodes, which is charged to 1000 V. When the spark gap is triggered, the discharge current has a peak value of 6.1 kA with a quarter cycle time period of 0.97 µs. The four-electrode spark gap switch results are compared with those of a three-electrode trigatron switch, which has the peak current of 6 kA with 1.01 µs as quarter-cycle time period. Four similar four-electrode spark gap switches are triggered with the same scheme and synchronized within 10 ns as peak values of currents with jitter as less than 5 ns.

We present a novel locking scheme for active length-stabilization and frequency detuning of a cavity optomechanical device based on the optical spring effect. The scheme can be used as an alternative to the Pound-Drever-Hall locking technique but in contrast doesn't require signal processing on time-scales of the cavity decay rate. It is therefore particularly suited for stabilizing micro cavities, where this time-scale can be extremely fast. The error signal is generated through the optical spring effect, i.e. the detuning-dependent frequency-shift of a nanomechanical oscillator that is dispersively coupled to the intra-cavity light field. We explain the functional principle of the lock and characterize its performance in terms of bandwidth and gain profile. The optical spring locking scheme can be implemented without larger efforts in a wide variety of optomechanical systems in the unresolved sideband regime., 5 pages, 2 figures

Radial transit time oscillator (RTTO) can be relied on to generate effective coherent electromagnetic radiation in the millimeter wave domain. In this paper, the preliminary experimental research on a Ka-band RTTO is reported for the first time. In experiments, the radial electron beam emitted from the knife edge of the disk cathode is guided by the radial magnetic field. The bombardment trace on the nylon target verifies the emission and transportation uniformity of the radial e-beam. When the diode voltage is 410 kV, the beam current is 7.8 kA, and the magnetic field is 0.6 T, the RTTO can output microwaves with the power of 320 MW and the frequency of 31.35 GHz. As the diode voltage increases from 350 kV to 430 kV, the output microwave power will grow accordingly. Taking the ohmic loss into consideration, the experimental results are in agreement with the simulation ones.

This paper presents a stick-slip piezoelectric actuator with high consistency in performances of forward and reverse motions. It is achieved by developing an integrated stator which bonds two lead zirconate titanate ceramic plates to a symmetrical flexible hinge mechanism. The working principle of the actuator was introduced, and the stator was optimized by finite-element analysis. Experimental results showed that the proposed actuator had an excellent consistency in output performances of forward and reverse motions with or without an external load. The positioning resolution, maximum speed, and maximum loading capacity of the actuator were 0.061 µm, 2195.29 µm/s, and 1.1 N, respectively. This study provides a solution for improving the forward and reverse motion consistency of stick-slip piezoelectric actuators.

Laser-produced plasma velocity distributions are an important, but difficult quantity to measure. We present a non-invasive technique for measuring individual charge state velocity distributions of laser-produced plasmas using a high temporal and spectral resolution monochromator. The novel application of this technique is its ability to detect particles up to 7 m from their inception (significantly larger than most laboratory plasma astrophysics experiments, which take place at or below the millimeter scale). The design and assembly of this diagnostic is discussed in terms of maximizing the signal to noise ratio, maximizing the spatial and temporal resolution, and other potential use cases. The analysis and results of this diagnostic are demonstrated by directly measuring the time-of-flight velocity of all ion charge states in a laser produced carbon plasma.

The In-Gas-jet Laser Ionization and Spectroscopy (IGLIS) technique relies on narrow-bandwidth, high-peak-power, short-pulse-length (≈10 ns), and high-repetition-rate laser pulses to probe, precisely and efficiently, the hyperfine structure of medium-heavy and heavy isotopes, embedded in a supersonic jet. The power and repetition rate requirements of the laser system are met by combining ≈100 W, 8 ns pulse width, 10 kHz commercial Nd:YAG pump lasers with a single-mode continuous wave seeded Pulsed Dye Amplifier (PDA). The common multi-longitudinal-mode operation of these Nd:YAG pump lasers causes, however, undesirable frequency sidebands in the output spectrum of the PDA system, hindering the attainable spectral resolution, a correct interpretation, and an accurate analysis of the hyperfine spectra. In this article, a new prototype Nd:YAG laser is presented, which combined with the PDA system is capable of providing quasi-transform-limited laser pulses at 10 kHz, with only limited losses in laser power. This system reduces any spectral sideband amplitude below a proven upper limit of 0.2% with one order of magnitude extra reduction expected based on simulations. A full characterization of both the Nd:YAG and PDA laser systems is done by studying the temporal and frequency behavior in detail. This study is finalized by a performance benchmark of this combined laser system in the hyperfine spectroscopy of copper isotopes, showcasing its applicability for future IGLIS studies.

Review of scientific instruments 91(10), 103101 (2020). doi:10.1063/5.0019935, The European X-ray Free-Electron Laser Facility in Germany delivers x-ray pulses with femtosecond pulse duration at a repetition rate of up to 4.5 MHz. The free-electron laser radiation is created by the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) process, whose stochastic nature gives rise to shot-to-shot fluctuations in most beam properties, including spectrum, pulse energy, spatial profile, wavefront, and temporal profile. Each spectrum consisting of many spikes varies in width and amplitude that appear differently within the envelope of the SASE spectrum. In order to measure and study the SASE spectrum, the HIgh REsolution hard X-ray single-shot (HIREX) spectrometer was installed in the photon tunnel of the SASE1 undulator beamline. It is based on diamond gratings, bent crystals as a dispersive element, and a MHz-repetition-rate strip detector. It covers a photon energy range of 3 keV–25 keV and a bandwidth of 0.5% of the SASE beam. The SASE spikes are resolved with 0.15 eV separation using the Si 440 reflection, providing a resolving power of 60 000 at a photon energy of 9.3 keV. The measured SASE bandwidth is 25 eV. In this paper, we discuss the design specifications, installation, and commissioning of the HIREX spectrometer. Measurements of the resonant behavior of a cryogenic current comparator (CCC) under a range of damping conditions have been made. A model of conserved thermal-noise energy in resonant systems has been applied showing that, regardless of the value of the damping resistor, the energy stored in the resonance is constant. This finding is presented in the context of the design of high turn CCCs for use in the measurement of small currents where there is an increasing requirement to understand and reduce noise. Various damping methods for CCCs are described and experimental results compared with the theory.

Contact welding is considered the major failure mechanism for electromechanical switch applications. There has been increasing demand to research the measurement method to characterize the anti-welding ability of metal electrode materials. In this paper, the contact welding phenomenon of closed electrodes is made to reoccur by using our novel designed test rig. The welding strength and welding area of typical electrode materials, including silver, copper, silver tin oxide, and silver nickel alloy, are explicitly measured and compared. In addition, the effects of electrical current and mechanical load force on welding strength and welding trace are presented. The calculation method of the threshold welding current is introduced for elastic contact situation in low current switching devices.

High pressure-temperature conditions can be readily achieved through the laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LH-DAC). A stable laser source is required for reliable in situ measurements of the sample, as the sample is small with a thermal time constant of the order of microseconds. Here, we show that the power instabilities typical of CO2 gas lasers used in LH-DAC's are ±5% at the second timescale and ∼±50% at the microsecond timescale. We also demonstrate that the pointing instability of the laser requires either a diffuser or an integrating sphere for reliable total power measurements with small sized detectors. We present a simple solution for stabilizing the power of a CO2 gas laser on the second timescale by the direct modulation of the current across the tube and another solution that stabilizes the power to the microsecond timescale by externally modulating the CO2 laser beam. Both solutions can achieve a ±0.3% power stability.

Series structure-based resistance thermometry readouts offer several advantages for multi-point temperature measurements. However, because of the diversity of nonlinear error sources and differences among channels in such readouts, existing nonlinear error correction methods are ineffective. In view of this situation, a nonlinear error correction method based on error source analysis is proposed. The proposed method first determines the impacts of error sources by analyzing the circuit architecture. The contributions of the common-mode rejection ratio and the mismatch between positive and opposite exciting currents are then eliminated using resistance bridge calibrators. Finally, the residuals are fitted to various polynomial functions. The results of experiments show that correction based on the proposed method results in a maximum nonlinear readout error of 1.87 × 10−5, compared with 4.01 × 10−5 using the classical method. Thus, the proposed method of nonlinear error correction is effective for series structure-based resistance thermometry readout.

A pixelated scintillator has been designed, fabricated, and tested using a laser-accelerated proton source for use in proton diagnostics at rep-rated laser facilities. The work presented here demonstrates the enhanced spatial resolution of thin, organic scintillators through a novel pixelation technique. Experimental measurements using laser-generated protons incident onto 130 μm-thick scintillators indicate a >20% reduction in the scintillator point spread function (PSF) for the detectors tested. The best performing pixelated detector reduced the ∼200 μm PSF of the stock material to ∼150 μm. The fabrication technique may be tailored to reduce the pixel size and achieve higher spatial resolutions.

This work presents a new technique for evaluating the solid-liquid phase transformations in complex diesel fuel blends and diesel surrogates under high-pressure conditions intended to simulate those occurring in vehicle fuel injectors. A high-pressure apparatus based on a visual identification of freezing and thawing has been designed and built to monitor phase behavior and determine the crystallization temperature of complex fuels to predict wax precipitation. The proposed methodology was validated using pure substances-n-hexadecane (C16H34), cyclohexane (C6H12), and a mixture of 0.5848 mol fraction n-hexadecane in cyclohexane. The crystallization temperatures of these compounds were measured from atmospheric pressure to 400 MPa for temperatures varying from 290 K to 363 K and compared to those reported in the literature. The standard error of the estimated temperatures for the experimental data obtained in this work, based on a given pressure, was compared to data from the literature. This methodology will be extended to investigate the properties of more complex fuel mixtures.

Magnetic induction tomography (MIT) is a non-invasive and non-contact imaging technology, which can be used in medical diagnosis by reconstructing the electrical distribution of biological tissues. Unlike other large medical imaging equipment, the device of MIT is with small size and low cost. The theoretical basis of MIT is by measuring the phase difference of magnetic flux density generated around the imaging objects, analyzing the eddy current distribution, and then using the reconstruction algorithms to obtain the electrical characteristic distribution of the object. This review introduces the development of imaging systems and the reconstruction algorithms of MIT as a medical assisted diagnostic technology, including the optimal design of the sensors, the excitation methods of the system, the calculation methods of the eddy current, and the improved methods of different reconstruction algorithms.

Three-dimensional (3D) visualization of a material under pressure can provide a great deal of information about its physical and chemical properties. We developed a technique combining in-house x-ray computed tomography (XCT) and a diamond anvil cell to observe the 3D geometry of a sample in situ at high pressure with a spatial resolution of about 610 nm. We realized observations of the 3D morphology and its evolution in minerals up to a pressure of 55.6 GPa, which is comparable to the pressure conditions reported in a previous synchrotron XCT study. The new technique developed here can be applied to a variety of materials under high pressures and has the potential to provide new insights for high-pressure science and technology.

We have designed a non-imaging telescope for measurement of the spectral irradiance of the moon. The telescope was designed to be integrated into a wing pod of a National Aeronautics and Space Administration ER-2 research aircraft to measure lunar spectral irradiance during flight. The telescope and support system were successfully flown in August 2018 at altitudes near 21 km and at speeds of ∼760 km/h. The wing pod in which the telescope is mounted has an opening through which the moon can be observed. The mount exposes the telescope to high winds, low pressures, temperatures near -60 °C, and vibrations both due to flight and due to the motion of the aircraft on the ground. This required a telescope design with high thermal stability and high resistance to shock. The optical design of the telescope is optimized to have high throughput and spatially uniform transmission from 380 nm to 1000 nm over a field of view about three times the angular size of the moon as viewed from the Earth. The final design resulted in a telescope with singlet design incorporating a 139.7 mm lens with an effective focal length of 377 mm and a field of view of 1.6°. The light from the telescope is introduced into an integrating sphere, which destroys the image and the polarization for measurement by a fiber-coupled spectroradiometer. Herein, we present an overview of the instrument and support system with emphasis on the telescope design.

We describe an alternating current method to measure the Nernst effect in superconducting thin films at low temperatures. The Nernst effect is an important tool in the understanding superconducting fluctuations and, in particular, vortex motion near critical points. However, in most materials, the Nernst signal in a typical experimental setup rarely exceeds a few $\mu$V, in some cases being as low as a few nV. DC measurements of such small signals require extensive signal processing and protection against stray pickups and offsets, limiting the sensitivity of such measurements to $>$5nV. Here we describe a method utilizing a one-heater-two-thermometer setup with the heating element and thermometers fabricated on-chip with the sample, which helped to reduce thermal load and temperature lag between the substrate and thermometer. Using AC heating power and 2$\omega$ measurement, we are able to achieve sub-nanovolt sensitivity in 20-30nm MoGe thin films on glass substrate, compared to a sensitivity of $\sim$9nV using DC techniques on the same setup., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

A gated oscillating power amplifier has been developed for high frequency biasing and real time turbulent feedback experiments in the Saskatchewan Torus-modified tokamak. This oscillator is capable of providing a peak to peak oscillating output voltage of around ±60 V with a current around 30 A within the frequency band 1 kHz-50 kHz without any distortions. The overall output power is amplified by a two-stage metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor power op-amp as well as nine identical push-pull amplifiers in the final stages. The power amplifier input signal, collected from the plasma floating potential during the tokamak discharge, is optically isolated from the tokamak vessel ground. The filtered floating potential fluctuations with a band width of 5 kHz-40 kHz were amplified and fed to an electrode inserted into the plasma edge to study the response of the plasma turbulence. We observe that magnetic fluctuations are suppressed due to real time feedback of the floating potential.

We have developed a novel discrimination methodology to identify ions in multispecies beams with similar charge-to-mass ratios, but different atomic numbers. After an initial separation by charge-to-mass ratios using co-linear electric and magnetic fields, individual ions can be discriminated by considering the linear energy transfer of ions irradiating a stimulable phosphor plate (Fujifilm imaging plate) by comparison with the Monte Carlo calculation. We apply the method to energetic multispecies laser-driven ion beams and use it to identify silver ions produced by the interaction between a high contrast, high intensity laser pulse; and a sub-micrometer silver foil target. We also show that this method can be used to calibrate the imaging plate for arbitrary ion species in the range of Z ≥ 6 with dE/dx > 0.1 MeV/μm without requiring individual calibration.

Pulsed eddy current has attracted increasing attention to ferromagnetic metal material evaluation since it possesses low power consumption and abundant frequency spectrum advantages. However, when a current source is applied to generate the pulse excitation signal in eddy current testing, the inductance of driver coil induces a large reverse electromotive force in the excitation circuit, which distorts the pulse excitation signal as the excitation circuit hardly satisfies the severe power and stability requirements for counteracting the reverse induced electromotive force. Therefore, a pulsed eddy current field excited by a voltage-driven coil placed concentrically to a ferromagnetic casing is studied, and the analytic solutions of it are formulated in this paper. In contrast to current source based pulsed eddy current testing methods, the electromotive force induced by the coil's inductance and eddy current is analyzed. Furthermore, a new pulse excitation function is adopted and induced electromotive force equations of pick-up coils are formulated based on the superposition principle of magnetic field. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by experiments.

Here, we extend flatbed scanner calibrations of GafChromic EBT3, MD-V3, and HD-V2 radiochromic films using high-precision x-ray irradiation and monoenergetic proton bombardment. By computing a visibility parameter based on fractional errors, optimal dose ranges and transitions between film types are identified. The visibility analysis is used to design an ideal radiochromic film stack for the proton energy spectrum expected from the interaction of a petawatt laser with a cryogenic hydrogen jet target.

The well known ordinary wave based interferometry is of frequent use for plasma diagnostics in fusion facilities. With the probing direction being perpendicular to the magnetic field of the facility, the ordinary wave phase shift is proportional to the average density along the probing path at frequencies much higher than the plasma frequency of electrons. In the case of extraordinary waves, the phase shift depends on both the plasma density and the confining magnetic field. For the facilities of stellarator/torsatron types, the magnetic field is known; therefore, the measurement of the extraordinary wave phase shift can also provide information on the plasma density profile. The plasma density measurements with the use of dual-polarization interferometers were carried out on the Uragan-3M and Uragan-2M torsatrons. For correct interpretation of the experimental results, numerical simulation was performed to describe the probing wave propagation through the plasma in the magnetic field of variable direction. The transmitting-to-receiving horn scattering matrix has been obtained in a wide range of plasma parameters. In the course of the interpretation of measurements, restrictions on the use of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation were determined. This has made it possible to develop the optimized layout of the dual-polarization interferometer for measuring the plasma density in stellarators/torsatrons. The here proposed upgrade of the interferometers on Uragan-2M will enable one to obtain additional information on the temporal evolution of the plasma density.

Two new vertical neutron cameras characterized by high detection efficiency were developed on the Large Helical Device in order to observe poloidal structures of helically trapped beam ions created by the perpendicularly injected positive-ion based neutral beam (P-NB) and are newly operated since 2018. In this work, the neutron fields at the vertical neutron cameras are investigated using the Monte Carlo N-particle transport code to evaluate the performance of its collimators. The results indicate that neutrons are attenuated by the heavy concrete and are well collimated through the collimator to detectors. Neutron spectra at the detector position show over 99% of uncollided 2.45 MeV neutrons. Time evolution of neutron emission profiles during the short pulse of P-NB injection is measured by the vertical neutron cameras. Peaks on the neutron emission profiles corresponding to the helically trapped beam ion are successfully obtained, as designed. The decrease in line integrated neutron flux at the peak positions after the P-NB stops is consistent with the behavior of the total neutron emission rate measured by the neutron flux monitor.

We developed micro-liquid enclosure arrays (MLEAs) for holding solution samples in coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) using x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs). Hundreds of fully isolated micro-liquid enclosures are arranged in a single MLEA chip for efficient measurement, where each enclosure is destroyed after exposure to a single XFEL pulse. A semi-automated MLEA assembling system was also developed to enclose solution samples into MLEAs efficiently at high precision. We performed XFEL-based CDI experiments using MLEAs and imaged in-solution structures of self-assembled gold nanoparticles. The sample hit rate can be optimized by adjusting solution concentration, and we achieved a single-particle hit rate of 31%, which is not far from the theoretical upper limit of 37% derived from the Poisson statistics. MELAs allow us to perform CDI measurement under controlled solution conditions and will help reveal the nanostructures and dynamics of particles in solution.

Free liquid jets are a common sample delivery method in serial femtosecond x-ray (SFX) crystallography. Gas dynamic virtual nozzles (GDVNs) use an outer gas stream to focus a liquid jet down to a few micrometers in diameter. Such nozzles can be fabricated through various methods (capillary grinding, soft lithography, digital light processing, and two-photon polymerization) and materials, such as glass, polydimethylsiloxane, and photosensitive polyacrylates. Here, we present a broadly accessible, rapid prototyping laser ablation approach to micromachine solvent-resistant and inert Kapton polyimide foils with highly reproducible geometric features that result in 3D flow-focused GDVNs suitable for crystallography experiments at synchrotrons and free-electron laser facilities.

This work shows a combined setup of Diffuse Reflectance FT-IR Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and electrochemical characterization by AC and DC methods for in situ and operando investigations of surface species during CO2 electrolysis on metal oxide electrodes and their correlation with electrochemical activity. A high-temperature reaction chamber enables conducting DRIFTS and electrochemical experiments simultaneously at temperatures up to 1000 °C in both reductive and oxidative reaction atmospheres and under anodic and cathodic polarization conditions. A dedicated gas- and electrical feedthrough solution is presented, which is the key element required for recording electrochemical AC and DC characteristics using an electrochemical cell, which is simultaneously studied by DRIFTS experiments under realistic operation conditions. Selected results, obtained on a gadolinium doped ceria model solid oxide electrolysis cell upon different polarization states, demonstrate the basic functionality and capabilities of the setup and show how the simultaneous DRIFT-spectroscopic and electrochemical investigation of the surface and bulk chemistry on electrode materials leads to increased insight in the population of potential intermediates during CO2 electrolysis. With infrared spectroscopy and impedance spectroscopy as common and complementary spectroscopic methods in material science, the setup is considered to exhibit a huge potential in a wide field of fundamental and applied mechanistic research.

This paper reports the development of a compact in situ real-time concentration analysis system for methane dissolved in seawater by using a continuous-wave cavity ringdown spectroscopy (CRDS) technique. The miniaturized design of the system, including optical resonance cavity and control and data acquisition-analysis electronics, has a cylindrical dimension of 550 mm in length and 100 mm in diameter. Ringdown signal generation, data acquisition and storage, current driver, and temperature controller of the diode laser are all integrated in the miniaturized system circuits, with an electrical power consumption of less than 12 W. Fitting algorithms of the ringdown signal and spectral line are implemented in a digital signal processor, which is the main control chip of the system circuit. The detection sensitivity for methane concentration can reach 0.4 ppbv with an approximate averaging time of 240 s (or 4 min). Comparing the system's measurement of ambient air against a high-quality commercial CRDS instrument has demonstrated a good agreement in results. In addition, as a "proof of concept" for measuring dissolved methane, the developed instrument was tested in an actual underwater environment. The results showed the potential of this miniaturized portable instrument for in situ gas sensing applications.

A combined measurement method on the basis of liquid compressibility and the characteristics of deep sea pressure compensators and pistons is proposed to solve the difficulty in measuring the large pressure of several kilometers of water depth and the small fluctuation pressure of several centimeters of water depth in ocean pressure detection. First, the working principle of the proposed method is introduced. Second, the force of piston is evaluated under static and dynamic pressure measurement conditions, and the corresponding mathematical models are established. Third, the measurement accuracy of static and dynamic pressures is analyzed. Finally, a test platform is built. The results show that the maximum dynamic pressure of 0.025 bar is realized at a pressure changing speed of 0.2 bar/s, and the small fluctuation pressure of 2.8 × 10−3 bars is realized at a pressure of 20 bars. The measurement system can track the changing ambient pressure in real time, and the measurement accuracy of the small fluctuation pressure is only related to the characteristics of the measurement system itself but not to the external large pressure. The accuracy and feasibility of the proposed method are verified. This study provides a new approach for measuring deep sea large pressure and its small fluctuation pressure.

Concentrating solar power plants use mirrors to redirect solar radiation toward receivers. Mirrors (facets) are suitably shaped to optimize the radiation capture ratio. Because deviations from ideal shape/slope degrade optical efficiency, the availability of reliable instruments for 3D shape measurement is essential. This paper deals with an innovative instrument, named VISproLF, specific for the case of facets for the primary reflector of linear Fresnel collectors. The instrument is simply composed of a LCD screen and a digital camera; to avoid artifacts, the camera must be equipped with a high quality lens and its characteristic matrix and distortion coefficients have to be accurately evaluated. The arrangement of the LCD screen and camera around the facet must follow the simple rule to view from the camera the facet surface entirely covered by the image of the screen. Then, the position and attitude of the camera (first) and LCD screen (second) are accurately evaluated by a simple procedure based on the pinhole camera model, which makes the instrument self-calibrating. The shape and slope of the facet surfaces are obtained by processing five binary images by means of a completely digital method of which a detailed description is given. In the experimental arrangement used to prepare the present paper, the slope accuracy is about 0.2 mrad. With respect to the most common instruments based on the Fringe reflection technology, VISproLF offers two great advantages: full-digital image processing and a self-calibration feature.

In this Note, a new compressed sensing-based tuning algorithm has been developed to boost the sensor tuning performance of the proton precession magnetometers (PPMs). An end-to-end framework for the PPM's sensing free induction decay (FID) signal resonance based on orthogonal matching pursuit compressed sensing (OMPCS), dubbed OMPCS-FID resonance (OMPCS-FIDR), is developed and its working principle and implemented strategy are elaborated. By comparing the new sensor tuning approach with the state-of-the-art algorithms, i.e., peak detection, auto-correction, and secondary tuning, the results demonstrate that the proposed tuning method not only retains the performance but also overcomes the drawbacks of the state-of-the-art methods, which accelerates the possibilities of the PPM working in a scenario with a strong gradient magnetic field.

Birefringence in optical fibers poses a challenge to controllably delivering polarized light. Strain-induced birefringence caused by bends in the fiber, vibrations, or a large temperature gradient can significantly alter the polarization, making it particularly difficult to deliver polarization states to low-temperature environments by fiber. In this paper, we investigate the transmission of polarized light through a fiber and discuss a method we have developed for delivering arbitrarily polarized light to the base stage of a dilution refrigerator using a standard optical fiber. We have created a compact, cryogenic optical system to identify the polarization of the delivered light, while room-temperature waveplates and a mathematical fiber model are used to fully characterize and compensate for the fiber’s birefringent effects. We show here that we are able to deliver horizontal, vertical, diagonal, anti-diagonal, right circular, and left circular polarization states to milli-Kelvin temperatures, with state fidelities of greater than 0.96 being achieved in all cases. Additionally, we demonstrate that we can deliver randomly selected elliptical states through a standard fiber to the refrigerator. This opens up new opportunities for fiber-based optical experiments using polarized light, such as quantum information experiments using quantum states encoded in the polarization of single photons.

X-ray calorimeters routinely achieve very high spectral resolution, typically a few eV full width at half maximum (FWHM). Measurements of calorimeter line shapes are usually dominated by the natural linewidth of most laboratory calibration sources. This compounds the data acquisition time necessary to statistically sample the instrumental line broadening and can add systematic uncertainty if the intrinsic line shape of the source is not well known. To address these issues, we have built a simple, compact monochromatic x-ray source using channel cut crystals. A commercial x-ray tube illuminates a pair of channel cut crystals that are aligned in a dispersive configuration to select the Kα1 line of the x-ray tube anode material. The entire device, including the x-ray tube, can be easily hand-carried by one person and may be positioned manually or using a mechanical translation stage. The output monochromatic beam provides a collimated image of the anode spot with magnification of unity in the dispersion direction (typically 100 μm–200 μm for the x-ray tubes used here) and is unfocused in the cross-dispersion direction so that the source image in the detector plane appears as a line. We measured output count rates as high as 10 count/s/pixel for the Hitomi soft x-ray spectrometer, which had 819 μm square pixels. We implemented different monochromator designs for energies of 5.4 keV (one design) and 8.0 keV (two designs), which have effective theoretical FWHM energy resolution of 0.125 eV, 0.197 eV, and 0.086 eV, respectively; these are well-suited for optimal calibration measurements of state-of-the art x-ray calorimeters. We measured an upper limit for the energy resolution of our Cr Kα1 monochromator of 0.7 eV FWHM at 5.4 keV, consistent with the theoretical prediction of 0.125 eV.

Performing atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with atomic resolution under ambient conditions is challenging due to enhanced noise and thermal drift. We show the design of a compact combined atomic force and scanning tunneling microscope that uses qPlus sensors and discuss the stability and thermal drift. By using a material with a low thermal expansion coefficient, we can perform constant height measurements and achieve atomic resolution in both AFM and STM on various samples. Moreover, the design allows a wide angle optical access to the sensor and the sample that is of interest for combining with optical microscopes or focusing optics with a high numerical aperture.

Research in new quantum materials requires multi-mode measurements spanning length scales, correlations of atomic-scale variables with macroscopic function, and spectroscopic energy resolution obtainable only at millikelvin temperatures, typically in a dilution refrigerator. In this article, we describe a multi-mode instrument achieving μeV tunneling resolution with in-operando measurement capabilities of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and magnetotransport inside a dilution refrigerator operating at 10 mK. We describe the system in detail including a new scanning probe microscope module design, sample and tip transport systems, along with wiring, radio-frequency (RF) filtering, and electronics. Extensive benchmarking measurements were performed using superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions, with Josephson tunneling as a noise metering detector. After extensive testing and optimization, we have achieved less than 8 μeV instrument resolving capability for tunneling spectroscopy, which is 5-10 times better than previous instrument reports and comparable to the quantum and thermal limits set by the operating temperature at 10 mK.

Band profiles of electronic devices are of fundamental importance in determining their properties. A technique that can map the band profile of both the interior and edges of a device at the nanometer scale is highly demanded. Conventional scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) can map band structure at the atomic scale, but is limited to the interior of large and conductive samples. Here we develop a contact-mode STS based on conductive atomic force microscope that can remove these constraints. With this technique, we map the band profile of MoS$_2$ transistors with nanometer resolution at room temperature. A band bending of 0.6 eV within 18 nm of the edges of MoS$_2$ on insulating substrate is discovered. Soft x-ray (SXR) tomography is a key diagnostic method for impurity transport study in tokamaks since it allows for local impurity density reconstruction. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) radiative environment in deuterium-deuterium and deuterium-tritium phases will limit the choices of SXR detector technologies, and gas detectors are one of the most promising solutions. In this paper, we, thus, investigate the SXR tomography possibilities on ITER using Low Voltage Ionization Chambers (LVICs). The study contains the development of a LVIC synthetic diagnostic and its application to estimate the LVIC tomographic capabilities in an ITER D-T scenario, including the influence of LVIC parameters and noise in the measurements.

A stacking strategy to construct a light-weight collimator is proposed in this paper by which micro-aperture arrays can be assembled as a novel Söller collimator. Compared to Söller collimators made from conventional methods, our strategy enabled a substantial mass reduction up to 67% for a field of view of 2°. 21 micro-aperture arrays were fabricated by fiber laser drilling, and the Söller collimator was thereafter afforded by stacking and aligning the arrays. The processing consistency of the arrays and the alignment of the assembled collimator were examined by optical microscopy and x-ray computer tomography. Collimation tests were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of the stacking strategy. Based on this new strategy, higher aspect ratios can be fulfilled, which also allows for a significant mass reduction compared to the conventional Söller collimator.

Measuring gamma rays emitted from nuclear reactions gives insight into their nuclear structure. Notably, there are several nuclear reactions that produce gamma rays at ∼1 MeV-3 MeV energies such as T(4He, γ)7Li, 4He(3He, γ)7Be, and 12C(p, γ)13N, which may solve questions lingering about big-bang nucleosynthesis and stellar nucleosynthesis. To observe 1 MeV-3 MeV gamma rays in an inertial confinement fusion system, a new style of the Cherenkov detector was developed using aerogel and fused silica as a Cherenkov medium. Utilizing the OMEGA laser facility, both aerogel and fused silica media were compared with the existing gas-medium Cherenkov detector to validate the concept. Gamma ray measurements from high yield inertial confinement fusion implosions (deuterium-tritium and deuterium-3He) demonstrated that aerogel and fused silica were viable Cherenkov media, paving the way for a potential optimized detector to make these cross section measurements on OMEGA or the National Ignition Facility.

A Faraday force magnetometer is presented for measurements of magnetization at temperatures down to 100~mK and in magnetic fields up to 14~T. The specimen is mounted on a flexible cantilever forming a force-sensing capacitor in combination with a fixed back plate. Two different cantilever designs are presented. A torsion resistant cantilever allows to measure magnetization of highly anisotropic single crystal samples. Measurements of the metal organic quantum magnets (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ (BPCB) and NiCl$_2$$\cdot$4 SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ (DTN) demonstrate the device's capabilities. Routinely, a specimen's magnetic moment is measured with a resolution better than $10^{-7}$ A$\,$m$^2$ ($10^{-4}$ emu). The device in miniaturized to fit is almost any cryostat.
