Two experiments to measure the size of microscopic dielectric spherical particles immersed in purified water with spheres of a nominal diameter 5.2 ± 0.15 μm have been carried out in order to revisit Mie scattering techniques. The first experiment uses a 1 mW helium–neon (He–Ne) laser with a wavelength of 632.8 nm, while the second one is carried out using a diode laser of 780.0 nm wavelength and a nominal power of 80 mW. The distribution of the scattered light intensity is recorded experimentally, and since the theoretical background has been known for several decades (see references), only a modest amount of theory is included. We considered the Mie scattering by a set of spheres of different diameters in our case with a distribution of sphere diameters with mean diameter 5.2 μm and standard deviation 0.15 μm. Our measured Mie scattering angular distribution accounts for the effect of the diameter distribution, which we assume to be a Gaussian distribution. Our results indicate that there is very good agreement between experiment and theoretical predictions. The technique we offer here is found to be useful to familiarize technicians who work in the areas of applied optics, such as chemistry, electronics, water contamination, and optical instruments with Mie scattering techniques, and who may not have a formal introduction to the electromagnetic theory. One specific area in which these techniques might be useful is the study of aerosols that may arise when naturally produced droplets from humans, such as those produced by coughing, sneezing, talking, and breathing, are present, as it happens in response to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, also known as SARS-CoV-2.

An investigation of air-core toroidal transformers has been undertaken to enable power converters to achieve megahertz operation. The characteristics of the air-core toroidal transformer govern the behaviors of the internal magnetic flux of the transformer. Understanding the behaviors at an above-megahertz level is a key issue in the design of the air-core toroidal transformer. This paper discusses the internal magnetic flux density distribution in the air-core toroidal transformer under high-frequency excitation. We propose a measurement method for the distribution and show the obtained results under a sinusoidal excitation with an amplitude of 1.5 A and a frequency of 1 MHz. The results reveal a non-uniform distribution in the tangential and normal directions. The cause of this non-uniformity was found to be the structure of the air-core toroidal transformer. In addition, the validity of the proposed measurement method was confirmed by comparing the experimentally obtained results with a numerical estimation using the Biot-Savart law. These results suggest that the proposed measurement method is capable of investigating the distributed characteristics of air-core toroidal transformers under megahertz excitation.

A new experimental setup has been developed to investigate the reactions of molecular ions and charged clusters with a variety of projectile beams. An Electrostatic Ion Beam Trap (EIBT) stores fast ions at keV energies in an oscillatory motion. By crossing it with a projectile beam, e.g., an IR laser, molecular reactions can be induced. We implemented a Reaction Microscope (REMI) in the field-free region of the EIBT to perform coincidence spectroscopy on the resulting reaction products. In contrast to prior experiments, this unique combination of techniques allows us to measure the 3D momentum-vectors of ions, electrons, and neutrals as reaction products in coincidence. At the same time, the EIBT allows for advanced target preparation techniques, e.g., relaxation of hot molecules during storage times of up to seconds, autoresonance cooling, and recycling of target species, which are difficult to prepare. Otherwise, the TrapREMI setup can be connected to a variety of projectile sources, e.g., atomic gas jets, large-scale radiation facilities, and ultrashort laser pulses, which enable even time-resolved studies. Here, we describe the setup and a first photodissociation experiment on [Formula: see text], which demonstrates the ion-neutral coincidence detection in the TrapREMI.

The dependence of the emittance of He+ beam extracted from a cold cathode Penning ion source on source discharge voltage, anode length, and cathode to anode distance was studied. The 2D3V particle-in-cell Monte Carlo simulation technique was utilized to perform the analysis. Different dimensions for components of the ion source such as anode length and cathode to anode distance were considered. The increase in the cathode to anode distance led to a reduction in rms emittance, almost independent of discharge voltage. This study indicated that the rms emittance slightly improves on increasing the anode length.

This paper proposed a three-core fiber Bragg grating (FBG) probe for sub-millinewton contact force measurement of a micromanipulator system. The probe comprises a bundle of three single-core FBGs assembled under the effect of capillary self-assembly. Theoretical relationships between Bragg wavelength and force are calculated based on the assumption of material mechanics. The experimental results show that the probe has a good linear relationship for the measurement of the radial two degrees of freedom contact force, and it is suitable for measuring the radial contact force of 0.1-1 mN. The proposed three-core FBG probe has the characteristics of simple structure, low cost, and better forming stability and sensitivity compared with the four-core structure.

Understanding radiation-induced chemical and physical transformations at material interfaces is important across diverse fields, but experimental approaches are often limited to either ex situ observations or in situ electron microscopy or synchrotron-based methods, in which cases the radiation type and dose are inextricably tied to the imaging basis itself. In this work, we overcome this limitation by demonstrating integration of an x-ray source with an atomic force microscope to directly monitor radiolytically driven interfacial chemistry at the nanoscale. We illustrate the value of in situ observations by examining effects of radiolysis on material adhesion forces in aqueous solution as well as examining the production of alkali nitrates at the interface between an alkali halide crystal surface and air. For the examined salt-air interface, direct visualization under flexible experimental conditions greatly extends prior observations by enabling the transformation process to be followed comprehensively from source-to-sink with mass balance quantitation. Our novel rad-atomic force microscope opens doors into understanding the dynamics of radiolytically driven mass transfer and surface alteration at the nanoscale in real-time.

Double-sided silicon strip detectors (DSSDs) have been widely used in interplanetary exploration. In this study, the prototype readout electronics of a DSSD for space exploration is presented. It mainly includes a front-end readout module (FEM) and a data acquisition module (DAM). The FEM is responsible for acquiring the charge of the DSSD signals based on an application-specific integrated circuit and polarity inverter circuits. The DAM with a field programmable gate array is employed to perform online calculations of the position and energy as well as data packaging and transfer. Test results show that the electronics has dynamic ranges of 6-2500 and -6 to -2500 fC with an integral nonlinearity of no more than 0.5%, while the root-mean-square noise level is less than 1.9 fC. Joint tests with the DSSD indicate that a full width at half maximum energy resolution of 3.25% at 5.486 MeV and a position resolution of 1.19 mm were achieved.

This paper proposes a synchronous demodulation technology based on sample-and-hold which shows significant advantages in the application of precision sensors. The traditional synchronous demodulation methods are discussed, and then the working principle of the proposed method is theoretically analyzed in detail. It is found that the proposed method can not only effectively suppress the harmonic components caused by the signal source but is also beneficial to improving the dynamic range of precision sensors. The eddy current sensor is adopted as an example of precision sensors, and a high-precision eddy current displacement sensor prototype was designed and tested. The results show that with the proposed method, the harmonics in the output signal are suppressed more effectively, and the demodulation circuit is relatively simplified. This synchronous demodulation method has an extensive application prospect in precision sensors.

The mid-infrared range is an important spectrum range where materials exhibit a characteristic response corresponding to their molecular structure. A free-electron laser (FEL) is a promising candidate for a high-power light source with wavelength tunability to investigate the nonlinear response of materials. Although the self-amplification spontaneous emission (SASE) scheme is not usually adopted in the mid-infrared wavelength range, it may have advantages such as layout simplicity, the possibility of producing a single pulse, and scalability to a short-wavelength facility. To demonstrate the operation of a mid-infrared SASE FEL system in an energy recovery linac (ERL) layout, we constructed an SASE FEL setup in cERL, a test facility of the superconducting linac with the ERL configuration. Despite the adverse circumstance of space charge effects due to the given boundary condition of the facility, we successfully established the beam condition at the undulators and observed FEL emission at a wavelength of 20 μm. The results show that the layout of cERL has the potential for serving as a mid-infrared light source.

Designing detection systems based on transimpedance amplifiers is a complex task because noise, frequency response, and stability are coupled constraints. This work presents a straightforward design method of detection systems based on transimpedance amplifiers. We take into account the objectives, scope of the design, and requirements and specifications, including the input signal levels. According to the small-signal model, the noise and stability are analyzed in detail. We present a systematic procedure to search for the acceptable values of the feedback network components based on these analyses. Then, we define a merit function to compare the performance of the acceptable combinations of feedback network components. For every acceptable combination, the function gives a quantitative measure of the degree of compliance for each design parameter: signal-to-noise ratio, highest operating frequency, and phase margin. As an example, we apply the method to optimize the design of an optical detection system using a PIN photodiode and a low-noise operational amplifier.

Sources of negative ions such as H− are essential elements of proton accelerators and tokamaks. They have limited lifetime. The replacement of an ion source is a costly process causing delays in the operation of the entire machine. The hot tungsten filament is the key element that limits the lifetime of the H− ion source at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) facility. An accurate model, which describes the filament physics and provides a reliable estimate on its lifetime, may significantly improve the operation of the facility. Here, we describe such a model, including a comprehensive list of relevant physical processes from first principles. The model can be used to describe different regimes of operation using diagnostics data as input parameters. It has been benchmarked against the data collected during the production cycle at LANSCE and shows good agreement with experimental data.

A reduced parameter model of fast laser-driven semiconductor switches of THz and mm-waves has been developed. The model predicts peak reflectivity and minimum transmissivity of switches, showing good agreement with experimental data, while requiring fewer inputs than published models. This simplification facilitated a systematic survey of laser parameters required for efficient switching. Laser energy density requirements are presented as a function of laser wavelength, laser pulse width, switched frequency, reflection angle, and semiconductor material (silicon or gallium arsenide). Analytical expressions have been derived to explain the dependence of laser requirements on switch parameters and to derive practical minima of required laser energy density. Diffusion is shown to quickly negate the shallow absorption advantage of laser wavelengths shorter than about 500 nm in silicon or 800 nm in gallium arsenide. Decreasing laser pulse width, to a derived limit, and switching S-polarized THz or mm-wave signals are shown to be means of lowering required laser energy. This is an especially useful result for devices operating at high power levels or THz frequencies, where extended switches are used in quasioptical systems.

In ultrashort pulse laser applications, optical dispersion seriously affects the energy concentration in the laser pulse duration and lowers the peak power. Accordingly, this study proposes a rapid dispersion estimation mechanism to facilitate the compensation of optical dispersion using a closed-loop control system. In the proposed approach, the optical dispersion information of the laser pulse is estimated directly from a frequency-resolved optical gating trace without the need for an iterative pulse-retrieval algorithm. In particular, the group delay dispersion (GDD) is determined from frequency and delay marginals, which are related to the laser spectrum and intensity autocorrelation, respectively, using a simple lookup table approach. The accuracy of the estimated GDD results is confirmed via a comparison with the spectral phase distribution of the electric field reconstructed using the principal component generalized projections algorithm. It is shown that the computation time of the proposed direct estimation method is around 13 times faster than that of the traditional iterative algorithm. It thus provides a feasible approach for enabling the real-time compensation of ultrafast laser pulse compression. Moreover, in a multiphoton-excited fluorescence imaging application, the proposed pulse compression mechanism yields an effective improvement in the intensity and contrast of the reconstructed image due to the increased nonlinear optical excitation efficiency of the optimized laser pulses.

A system based on a novel scheme for generating the repetitive pulsed high magnetic field (RPHMF) is developed and applied to enhance the performance of the NdFeB electrocatalyst in alkaline water electrolysis for the first time. In this system, the scheme for generating continuously high-frequency pulses depends on the cooperation of multiple power modules with a new structure. Multiple power modules are connected in parallel to energize the pulsed magnet, and each module is composed of two capacitor banks and a pulse transformer, which is used to realize the conversion of the energy between the two capacitor banks. As the residual energy in one capacitor is transferred to another, the energy required to be replenished for the next pulse reduces substantially. Then, the high repetition rate of the RPHMF can be achieved by discharging the capacitor banks of each module in sequence. The scheme has been validated by the experiment of a 2.4 T/12 Hz prototype with only one power module. Simulation shows that the frequency of the RPHMF can be improved to 12*N Hz with N power modules, and a higher repetition rate of the RPHMF may bring new opportunities to the water electrolysis.

Superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities are fundamental building blocks of modern particle accelerators. They operate at liquid helium temperatures (2–4 K) to achieve very high quality factors (1010–1011). Trapping of magnetic flux within the superconductor is a significant contribution to the residual RF losses, which limit the achievable quality factor. Suitable diagnostic tools are in high demand to understand the mechanisms of flux trapping in technical superconductors, and the fundamental components of such diagnostic tools are magnetic field sensors. We have studied the performance of commercially available Hall probes, anisotropic magnetoresistive sensors, and flux-gate magnetometers with respect to their sensitivity and capability to detect localized, low magnetic flux amplitudes, of the order of a few tens of magnetic flux quantum at liquid helium temperatures. Although Hall probes have the lowest magnetic field sensitivity (∼96 nV/μT at 2 K), their physical dimensions are such that they have the ability to detect the lowest number of trapped vortices among the three types of sensors. Hall probes and anisotropic magnetoresistive sensors have been selected to be used in a setup to map regions of trapped flux on the surface of a single-cell SRF cavity.

Automatic inspection of micro-defects of thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels is a critical task in LCD manufacturing. To meet the practical demand of online inspection of a one-dimensional (1D) line image captured by the line scan visual system, we propose a robust 1D Fourier reconstruction method with the capability of automatic determination of the period Δx of the periodic pattern of a spatial domain line image and the neighboring length r of the frequency peaks of the corresponding frequency domain line image. Moreover, to alleviate the difficulty in the discrimination between the defects and the non-uniform illumination background, we present an effective way to correct the non-uniform background using robust locally weighted smoothing combined with polynomial curve fitting. As a proof-of-concept, we built a line scan visual system and tested the captured line images. The results reveal that the proposed method is able to correct the non-uniform illumination background in a proper way that does not cause false alarms in defect inspection but also preserves complete information about the defects in terms of the brightness and darkness as well as the shape, indicating its distinct advantage in defect inspection of TFT-LCD panels.

We introduce a new correlation analysis technique for thermal helium beam (THB) diagnostics. Instead of directly evaluating line ratios from fluctuating time series, we apply arithmetic operations to all available He I lines and construct time series with desired dependencies on the plasma parameters. By cross-correlating those quantities and by evaluating ensemble averages, uncorrelated noise contributions can be removed. Through the synthetic data analysis, we demonstrate that the proposed analysis technique is capable of providing the power spectral densities of meaningful plasma parameters, such as the electron density and the electron temperature, even under low-photon-count conditions. In addition, we have applied this analysis technique to the experimental THB data obtained at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak and successfully resolved the electron density and temperature fluctuations up to 90 kHz in a reactor relevant high power scenario.

A 10 MeV, 5 kW electron accelerator is being developed for industrial applications. A scanning system including an AC scan magnet and a triangular wave generating power supply is developed to scan the electron beam over a length of 1 m. About 1.7 kG magnetic field is required for the full scan. A scan magnet is designed using POISSON and CST Microwave studio. This paper presents simulation results, fabrication details of the magnet, and design and development of the power supply. Field measurement is taken using the DC power supply and AC power supply. The simulation and experimental results are in good agreement.

An experimental technique is developed to simultaneously measure both temporal and spatial coherences of a light source by altering a standard Michelson interferometer, which has been primarily used for measuring temporal coherence only. Instead of using simple plane mirrors, two retroreflectors and their longitudinal and lateral movements are utilized to incorporate spatial coherence measurement using this modified Michelson interferometer. In general, one uses Young double slit interferometer to measure spatial coherence. However, this modified interferometer can be used as an optical setup kept at room temperature outside a cryostat to measure spatio-temporal coherence of a light source placed at cryogenic temperatures. This avoids the added complexities of modulation of interference fringe patterns due to single slit diffraction as well. The process of mixing of spatial and temporal parts of coherences is intrinsic to existing methods for dual measurements. We addressed these issues of spatiotemporal mixing and we introduced a method of temporal filtering in spatial coherence measurements. We also developed a curve overlap method which is used to extend the range of the experimental setup during temporal coherence measurements without compromising the precision. Together, these methods provide major advantages over plane mirror based standard interferometric systems for dual measurements in avoiding systematic errors which lead to inaccuracies especially for light sources with low coherences., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

A Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) is one of the most important scanning probe tools available to study and manipulate matter at the nanoscale. In a STM, a tip is scanned on top of a surface with a separation of a few \AA. Often, the tunneling current between tip and sample is maintained constant by modifying the distance between the tip apex and the surface through a feedback mechanism acting on a piezoelectric transducer. This produces very detailed images of the electronic properties of the surface. The feedback mechanism is nearly always made using a digital processing circuit separate from the user computer. Here we discuss another approach, using a computer and data acquisition through the USB port. We find that it allows succesful ultra low noise studies of surfaces at cryogenic temperatures. We show results on different compounds, a type II Weyl semimetal (WTe$_2$), a quasi two-dimensional dichalcogenide superconductor (2H-NbSe$_2$), a magnetic Weyl semimetal (Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$) and an iron pnictide superconductor (FeSe)., Comment: Instrumentation paper

The use of optical instrumentation in advanced nuclear fission systems, such as molten salt reactors, liquid metal-cooled reactors, and high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, has the potential to enhance reactor safety and economic performance through in situ and online measurement of reactor conditions. Selection of suitable optical components, such as optical windows and fibers, is essential for operation of optical instrumentation in intense radioactive and thermal environments inherent to nuclear reactor systems. We present the development and performance of a self-contained and mobile post-irradiation examination system for rapid characterization of the optical properties of materials. The instrument combines linear absorption and nanosecond Z-scan modules in a compact, relocatable design. The system mobility allows for the evaluation of optical samples at the site of irradiation, minimizing the delay between extraction from the irradiation site and optical characterization. This provides nearly real-time information on the material performance under simultaneous irradiation and thermal annealing, simulating the relevant conditions for the use of those components in nuclear power systems.

As one of the most important diagnostics of field reversed plasma, the single-flux loop around the vacuum chamber is usually used to measure the magnetic flux to deduce the plasma size. In the theta-pinch process, the power supply will drive a large current through the coil in a short time to generate a high magnetic field, which will cause the magnetic flux in the vacuum chamber to rise sharply. Therefore, the induced voltage on the single-flux loop may be very strong and have high-frequency components. A voltage divider must be used to reduce the induced voltage to the range that the transmission line can withstand. According to the high-frequency characteristics of the measured signal, this paper designs a capacitor voltage divider single-flux loop with reference to the capacitive voltage divider in the industry. After theoretical derivation of parameter selection and then in the preliminary experimental test with and without plasma, the effectiveness of the distributed capacitor flux loop is verified.

In this work, we present an achromatic pump-probe setup covering the visible (VIS) to near-infrared (NIR) wavelength regions (500-3000 nm) for few-cycle pulses. Both the pump and probe arms can work either in the VIS or the NIR wavelength regions, making our setup suitable for multi-color, broadband pump-probe measurements. In particular, our setup minimizes time-smearing due to the phase front curvature, an aspect of ultrafast spectroscopy that has been missing from previous works and allowing us to achieve sub-20-fs temporal resolution. We demonstrate the capabilities of our setup by performing measurements on Pr0.5Ca1.5MnO4. We pump and probe in both wavelength regions with a range of pump fluences and demonstrate how the observed dynamics depend strongly on the probe wavelength. Furthermore, the observation of a 16.5 THz phonon demonstrates the high temporal resolution of the setup.

We report the design of a time-shared switching scheme, aiming to realize the manipulation and working modes (imaging mode and transport measurement mode) switching between multiple scanning tunneling microscope (STM) probes one by one with a shared STM control system (STM CS) and an electrical transport characterization system. This scheme comprises three types of switch units, switchable preamplifiers (SWPAs), high voltage amplifiers, and a main control unit. Together with the home-made software kit providing the graphical user interface, this scheme achieves a seamless switching process between different STM probes. Compared with the conventional scheme using multiple independent STM CSs, this scheme possesses more compatibility, flexibility, and expansibility for lower cost. The overall architecture and technique issues are discussed in detail. The performances of the system are demonstrated, including the millimeter scale moving range and atomic scale resolution of a single STM probe, safely approached multiple STM probes beyond the resolution of the optical microscope (1.1 µm), qualified STM imaging, and accurate electrical transport characterization. The combinational technique of imaging and transport characterization is also shown, which is supported by SWPA switches with ultra-high open circuit resistance (909 TΩ). These successful experiments prove the effectiveness and the usefulness of the scheme. In addition, the scheme can be easily upgraded with more different functions and numbers of probe arrays, thus opening a new way to build an extremely integrated and high throughput characterization platform.

The wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) procedure produces tens of thousands of images of the digestive tract, for which the use of the manual reading process is full of challenges. Convolutional neural networks are used to automatically detect lesions in WCE images. However, studies on clinical multilesion detection are scarce, and it is difficult to effectively balance the sensitivity to multiple lesions. A strategy for detecting multiple lesions is proposed, wherein common vascular and inflammatory lesions can be automatically and quickly detected on capsule endoscopic images. Based on weakly supervised learning, EfficientNet is fine-tuned to extract the endoscopic image features. Combining spatial features and channel features, the proposed attention network is then used as a classifier to obtain three classifications. The accuracy and speed of the model were compared with those of the ResNet121 and InceptionNetV4 models. It was tested on a public WCE image dataset obtained from 4143 subjects. On the computer-assisted diagnosis for capsule endoscopy database, the method gives a sensitivity of 96.67% for vascular lesions and 93.33% for inflammatory lesions. The precision for vascular lesions was 92.80%, and that for inflammatory lesions was 95.73%. The accuracy was 96.11%, which is 1.11% higher than that of the latest InceptionNetV4 network. Prediction for an image only requires 14 ms, which balances the accuracy and speed comparatively better. This strategy can be used as an auxiliary diagnostic method for specialists for the rapid reading of clinical capsule endoscopes.

The upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) region is a highly variable region of the atmosphere and critical for understanding climate. Yet, it remains undersampled in the observational satellite record. Due to recent advances in interferometer and infrared detection technologies, imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) technology has been identified as a feasible remote sensing approach to obtain the required precision and spatial resolution of atmospheric trace gas composition in the UTLS. Building on the success of instruments such as the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding and gimbaled limb observer for radiance imaging of the atmosphere, the limb imaging Fourier transform spectrometer experiment (LIFE) instrument, of which this paper details the design and performance, is a balloon-borne infrared imaging FTS developed as an early prototype of a low earth orbit satellite instrument. LIFE is constructed primarily with commercially available off-the-shelf components, with a design emphasis on greatly reducing the complexity of the instrument, particularly the cooling requirements, with a minimal reduction in information gain on the target atmospheric greenhouse gases of water vapor, methane, ozone, and nitrous oxide. The developed instrument was characterized through a series of thermal and vacuum tests and validated through a successful demonstration balloon flight during the 2019 Strato-Science campaign in Canada. In the calibration of the data from the balloon flight, an issue was identified regarding a lack of knowledge in the emissivity of the on-board blackbody calibration sources. These systematic effects were minimized through the application of an emissivity ratio determined from the characterization tests where a wider range of known blackbody temperatures were available. Despite this identified calibration issue, the results demonstrate that the instrument is capable of meeting primary performance requirements for trace gas retrievals of the target atmospheric species.

We developed a laboratory-size three-dimensional water-window x-ray microscope using condenser and objective grazing incidence Wolter type I mirrors, an electron-impact-type x-ray source, and a back-illuminated CCD. The imaging system was improved for practical applications in life science research fields. Using a new objective mirror with reduced figure errors, a resolution limit of 3.1 line pairs/μm was achieved for two-dimensional transmission images and sub-micrometer-scale three-dimensional structures were resolved. Incorporating a cryogenic stage into the x-ray microscope, we observed biological samples embedded in ice to evaluate the usefulness of observation in the water-window region and multi-energy observation was demonstrated using an x-ray source with multiple x-ray tubes.

High-sensitive spectroscopy instruments have been developed to measure thermoluminescence emission (TLE), diffuse reflectance, and photoluminescence (PL). The key features of these instruments are low cost, high resolution, and compact size. For TLE measurement, A Kanthal resistive heating strip with a linear heating rate and Ocean Optics spectra suite software were used. Thermally stimulated emission of light was recorded using a USB4000+ES spectrophotometer in the UV-Vis region. In the TLE spectra, intensity vs wavelength was recorded as a function of temperature. In the high instance TLE spectrum of Al2O3, Tm3+ measured at 458 K shows peaks at 298, 355, 394, 466, 526, 658, 672, 696, and 713 nm. The UV-Vis DRS spectrum of the ZnO powder sample was measured at room temperature in the wavelength range 230–750 nm. The optical bandgap of ZnO was determined using Kubelka–Munk theory and found to be 3.22 eV. In the PL setup, a xenon lamp as the excitation source, direct-attach cuvette holder, visible light filter, IR filter, and adjustable UV bandpass linear variable filter were used. The excitation wavelength was fixed using a filter, and the emission spectra of samples were recorded. In the PL emission spectrum of Al2O3, Tb3+ shows bands at 382, 420, 438, 462, 487, 543, 586, and 623 nm, which are characteristic of Tb3+ ions. The obtained PL results are compared with data acquired using the Hitachi (F-2700) fluorescence spectrometer. This cost-effective spectroscopy instrument will be beneficial in materials science research in order to investigate the optical properties of the materials by study of TLE, PL, and diffuse reflectance.

This paper presents the measurement of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function of tungsten (W) samples and the resulting reflection models in the nuclear fusion device WEST (tokamak). For this, an experimental gonio-spectrophotometer was developed to fully characterize the material’s optical and thermal-radiative properties of metallic samples with different roughnesses. Ray-tracing photonic simulation was then carried out to predict the photon behavior in a fully metallic environment as a function of reflectance measurement. Low emissivity (0.1 at 4 μm) and highly specular reflectance (fitting with a Gaussian distribution around the specular direction with a small width lower than 10°) are found for W samples. These measurements have been used as input for the photonic simulation, and the resulting synthetic image reproduced the reflection features well on the upper divertor, detected in WEST infrared experimental images.

Laser-based particle accelerators have been an active field of research for over two decades moving from laser systems capable of one shot every hour to systems able to deliver repetition rates in the Hz regime. Based on the advancements in laser technology, the corresponding detection methods need to develop from single to multiple use with high readout speed. Here, we present an online compact tracker of particles using scintillators with nine resolvable energy levels and a spatial resolution of 3.6 × 3.6 mm2 over the whole active area. This paper describes the design and construction of the detector, which is based on pixellated scintillators embedded inside an absorber matrix. The scintillator pixels are fiberoptically coupled to a camera system for online readout and analysis. Calibration with a radioactive source and first experimental data measuring laser accelerated ions at the PHELIX laser at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany, are presented and discussed.

Capacitor switch assemblies (CSAs) are a viable alternative to the standard Linear Transformer Driver (LTD) brick-the prime power "building block" in LTD-based high current drivers. In a CSA, the geometrical advantages combined with the switch's placement within a CSA produce a significantly lower inductance structure compared to the LTD brick. Lower inductances enable higher peak currents and faster rise times when all other parameters are held constant, thus making low inductance a crucial feature in high current systems. In this article, the experimental characterization of a 200-nF, 38-nH CSA is presented. When charged to 56 (57 kV), this CSA generates a 76 (64-kA) current peak into 0.28 (0.46-Ω) resistive loads. Comparing the experimental data's waveforms with those of an analytic circuit model, close agreement with underdamped RLC circuit theory is obtained. Based on this CSA's performance, the experimental data are extrapolated to model the performance of a bipolar 100-nF (±90 kV) CSA and a unipolar 200-nF (90 kV) CSA and compared with a standard 40-nF, bipolar (±100 kV) LTD brick. Furthermore, circuit simulations are performed for a 2.2-m diameter LTD cavity with 20 dual polarity (±100 kV) standard bricks and 23 dual polarity (±90 kV) CSAs. An increase by a factor of 2 in the power output is obtained for the CSA-LTD cavity over the brick LTD cavity while maintaining the same cross-sectional area. This has a large potential impact on the pulsed power generator design, both for smaller university-scale machines and proposed next-generation [60 Mega Amp (MA)] accelerators.

A design for an incident-beam collimator for the Paris–Edinburgh pressure cell is described here. This design can be fabricated from reaction-bonded B4C but also through fast turnaround, inexpensive 3D-printing. 3D-printing thereby also offers the opportunity of composite collimators whereby the tip closest to the sample can exhibit even better neutronic characteristics. Here, we characterize four such collimators: one from reaction-bonded B4C, one 3D-printed and fully infiltrated with cyanoacrylate, a glue, one with a glue-free tip, and one with a tip made from enriched 10B4C. The collimators are evaluated on the Spallation Neutrons and Pressure Diffractometer of the Spallation Neutron Source and the Wide-Angle Neutron Diffractometer at the High Flux Isotope Reactor, both at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This work clearly shows that 3D-printed collimators perform well and also that composite collimators improve performance even further. Beyond use in the Paris–Edinburgh cell, these findings also open new avenues for collimator designs as clearly more complex shapes are possible through 3D printing. An example of such is shown here with a collimator made for single-crystal samples measured inside a diamond anvil cell. These developments are expected to be highly advantageous for future experimentation in high pressure and other extreme environments and even for the design and deployment of new neutron scattering instruments.

An injection-seeded terahertz (THz)-wave parametric generator (is-TPG) with a footprint the size of an A3 paper is presented. We improved the measurement performance of the is-TPG source for nondestructive inspection applications. A high pulse repetition rate up to 70 kHz and a low pulse timing jitter of a few tens of picoseconds, which is approximately one ten-thousandth of the conventional is-TPG, were achieved. THz waves exhibited excellent performance with a maximum average output power of 20 µW, a monochromatic spectrum linewidth of ∼20 GHz, and a frequency tuning range of 1.7-3.0 THz. This was achieved by designing the entire system configuration from the pump laser source to THz-wave generation. A new double-pass all-solid-state optical amplifier was developed with a high gain and low noise using an externally pulse-modulated laser diode (LD) as the master oscillator source. An achromatic optical injection system was developed for the is-TPG with a 40% reduction in the conventional path length. They were housed in a single enclosure in two layers. LDs and optical fiber amplifiers could be rack-mounted, and the outputs were delivered to the housing via optical fibers. The developed THz-wave source performed nondestructive imaging of a human hair sample fixed with Scotch tape on a test pattern in an envelope by irradiating 2.1 THz waves. A clearly recognizable THz-wave image of an enclosed hair with a spatial resolution close to the THz wavelength was obtained.

In some applications of broadband ultrafast spectroscopy, such as surface sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy, femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (SRS), and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy, a narrowband picosecond pulse is required to obtain a high spectral resolution. Here, we present a method to generate narrowband picosecond second harmonic (SH) and fundamental frequency (FF) pulses with high-conversion efficiency from a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser amplifier. The narrowband picosecond SH pulse was generated based on the group velocity mismatch between the SH and FF pulses in a nonlinear crystal of β-barium borate (BBO). The small SH nonlinear optical coefficient was optimized by changing the azimuth angle of a thick BBO crystal, successfully avoiding the saturation effect in the SH generation process. The SH pulse was then used to pump an optical parametric amplifier to efficiently amplify the narrowband FF seed pulse, which was obtained with an etalon by spectrally filtering the output from the femtosecond laser amplifier. Dual-wavelength output, which could be very useful in femtosecond SRS, was also realized.

In order to meet the application needs of gyromagnetic nonlinear transmission lines, a pulsed power generator is required to output short duration pulses with a fast rising edge in high repetitive-rate mode. In this paper, a low-impedance high-power pulsed generator based on the forming line with a built-in Tesla transformer is explored and developed. The generator includes a 14 Ω coaxial forming line, a SF6/N2 gas switch, and a resistive dummy load, which can steadily operate in 100 Hz mode and suits the needs above. The pulsed forming line adopts transformer oil as the insulation medium and has a large shell radius and short length to reduce impedance. It has been verified by CST simulation that a relatively high coupling coefficient (0.93) can be achieved when the length–radius ratio is 3.2. The maximum forming line charging voltage is −600 kV in single-shot mode, while the charging voltage is −520 kV in repetitive-rate mode. The output pulse duration is 13 ns with a 4 ns rising edge, and its amplitude for a 10 Ω load is −220 kV at a repetition rate of 100 Hz. The experimental results showed the feasibility of the low-impedance nanosecond periodically pulsed generator based on an oil forming line charged from the high-coupling Tesla transformer. These efforts expand the technical route of the pulse forming line with a built-in Tesla transformer and set a good foundation for its application in the future.

Cardiovascular disease is the world's leading cause of death. People at higher risk of heart disease need early detection to prevent or delay serious disease complications. In this paper, we present a new design of a wireless portable ECG (electrocardiogram). The ECG signal was preprocessed by analog filters and amplifiers before it was converted into digital data via an Arduino board, a highly available device for real-time signal processing. In order to allow communication between Arduino and Android phone, we use a Bluetooth module. The proposed mobile telemedicine technique allows immediate and rapid detection of heart defects followed by an alarm message from the patient to the doctor.

We report the development and implementation of a novel data acquisition (DAQ) technique for synchrotron-based laser pump X-ray Transient Absorption (XTA) spectroscopy, called X-ray Multi-Probe DAQ (XMP DAQ). This technique utilizes high performance analog to digital converters and home-built software to efficiently measure and process the XTA signal from all x-ray pulses between laser excitations. XMP DAQ generates a set of time resolved x-ray absorption spectra at thousands of different pump-probe time delays simultaneously. Two distinct XMP DAQ schemes are deployed to accommodate different synchrotron storage ring filling patterns. Current Integration (CI) DAQ is a quasi-analog technique that implements a fitting procedure to extract the time resolved absorption intensity from the averaged fluorescence detector response. The fitting procedure eliminates issues associated with small drifts in the voltage baseline and greatly enhances the accuracy of the technique. Photon Counting (PC) DAQ is a binary technique that uses a time resolved histogram to calculate the XTA spectrum. While PC DAQ is suited to measure XTA data with closely spaced x-ray pulses (∼10 ns) and a low count rate (1 detected photon/pulse), CI DAQ works best for widely spaced pulses (tens of ns or greater) with a high count rate (1 detected photon/pulse). XMP DAQ produces a two-dimensional XTA dataset, enabling efficient quantitative analysis of photophysical and photochemical processes from the sub-nanosecond timescale to 100 μs and longer.

We report the thermally detected electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in the frequency range of millimeter and submillimeter waves. Under high vacuum conditions, a cantilever-shaped device detects ESR absorption of a mounted sample as a temperature difference in its beam direction. Despite the simple experimental setup, the spin sensitivity of the order of 10(12) spins/G was achieved at 10 K. The developed sample stage is small enough to be used in a 10 T split-pair superconducting magnet with a bore of 25 mm, enabling precise field-angle-dependent ESR measurements at multi-frequencies above 500 GHz. We demonstrate its usefulness by studying the field-angle dependence of the excitation energy of the dimer triplet state in the Shastry–Sutherland magnet SrCu2(BO3)2.

Rapid compression machines (RCMs) are used to simulate a single stroke of an internal combustion engine. After a high-speed compression process, a high-pressure and low-to-intermediate temperature condition can be obtained, under which ignition processes are usually studied. With the help of different diagnostic methods, the detailed speciation information of the ignition process can be quantified. In this study, the molecular beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) diagnostic method was applied on an RCM to realize time-resolved concentration profile measurements. To realize the combination between RCM and MBMS, particle dampers were adopted to suppress the vibrations of the RCM, and a novel flexible interface was designed to maintain a high vacuum, which ensured the safe and effective operation of a high-repetition-rate time-of-flight mass spectrometer (HRR-TOF-MS). The detailed configuration of this diagnostic method is presented, and the data acquisition system and data analysis method are described. The arrangement was validated through the investigation of the well-studied decomposition of 1,3,5-trioxane at temperatures between 697 and 777 K at 10 bars. The measured concentration profiles of 1,3,5-trioxane and formaldehyde were in good agreement with previous experimental and theoretical calculation results. The experimental results showed that the newly developed RCM coupled with the HRR-TOF-MS has advantages in time-resolved speciation measurements at low-to-intermediate temperatures and high pressures, and it can be applied in low-temperature combustion chemical kinetics studies.

Specific tissue lengths or volumes in x-ray images are measured for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Measurements are used to make clinical decisions; however, the accuracy of these measurements has not been studied. In this study, based on the sources of uncertainty, an SI-traceable length standard phantom and an x-ray imaging system calibration method are proposed. The uncertainty in the length of the fabricated standard phantom is determined using a toolmaker's microscope. The sources of uncertainty in an x-ray imaging system, such as magnification, pixel-to-millimeter unit conversion, and penumbra effect, are considered, and the lengths of the phantom before and after imaging system calibration were compared. The maximum deviation of length measurements with and without calibration is (-0.11 ± 0.10) and (-3.37 ± 0.15) mm (k = 2, 95% level of confidence), respectively. The proposed phantom and calibration method can be used for calibrating x-ray images and obtaining their length correction values. Furthermore, length correction values are expected to be useful for diagnosis and treatment planning, where precise length measurements are essential.

In this work, we developed a fluorescence and photothermal microscope with extremely large scanning range and high spatial resolution. We demonstrated the capability of this instrument by simultaneously measuring the photoluminescence and photothermal signals of the CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) film. After scanning the MAPbI3 film on the scale of centimeters, we can obtain information of both emissive and nonemissive processes with a resolution of 200 nm at any location of the large area. We can clearly see the localized photothermal signal while the photoluminescence signal is uniform. These results directly prove that the emissive recombination happens all over the materials, but the nonemissive recombination happens only at certain localized quenching sites. The fluorescence and photothermal microscope with both large scanning range and high spatial resolution can provide information of all the relaxation channels of the excitons, showing potential applications for investigation of photophysical mechanisms in photoelectric materials.

We design and develop a high-performance magnetic shielding system for a long baseline fountain-type atom interferometer. The shielding system is achieved by a combination of passive shielding using permalloy and active compensation with coils. An 11.4 m-long three-layer cylindrical shield is completed by the process of welding, local annealing, and entire annealing. The active compensations compress the residual magnetic field to 8.0 nT max-to-min and the corresponding gradient below 30 nT/m over 10 m along the axial direction in which external compensation, internal compensation, and constant magnetic field (C-field) compensation reduce the inhomogeneities to 25.0, 12.6, and 1.7 nT (standard deviation) sequentially. We estimate that this system could reduce the systematic error of the quadratic Zeeman shift to the 10−13 level for the weak equivalence principle test with a simultaneous 85Rb–87Rb dual-species atom interferometer.

We present a deep learning based framework for real-time analysis of a differential filter based x-ray spectrometer that is common on short-pulse laser experiments. The analysis framework was trained with a large repository of synthetic data to retrieve key experimental metrics, such as slope temperature. With traditional analysis methods, these quantities would have to be extracted from data using a time-intensive and manual analysis. This framework was developed for a specific diagnostic, but may be applicable to a wide variety of diagnostics common to laser experiments and thus will be especially crucial to the development of high-repetition rate (HRR) diagnostics for HRR laser systems that are coming online.

We compare two different experimental techniques for the magnetic-sub-level preparation of metastable $^4$He in the $2^3$S$_1$ level in a supersonic beam, namely magnetic hexapole focusing and optical pumping by laser radiation. At a beam velocity of $v = 830\,$m/s, we deduce from a comparison with a particle trajectory simulation that up to $99\,$\% of the metastable atoms are in the $M_{J^{''}} = +1$ sub-level after magnetic hexapole focusing. Using laser optical pumping via the $2^3$P$_2-2^3$S$_1$ transition, we achieve a maximum efficiency of $94\pm3\,$\% for the population of the $M_{J^{''}} = +1$ sub-level. For the first time, we show that laser optical pumping via the $2^3$P$_1-2^3$S$_1$ transition can be used to selectively populate each of the three $M_{J^{''}}$ sub-levels ($M_{J^{''}} = $ -1, 0, +1). We also find that laser optical pumping leads to higher absolute atom numbers in specific $M_{J^{''}}$ sub-levels than magnetic hexapole focusing., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures

An artificial neural network (ANN) based tunable automated standalone RF sensor system is proposed to realize an improved sensing module involving a quite accurate solution of the non-linear inverse characterization problem. The presented tunable sensor system is quite novel as it alleviates the need for any active tuning circuitry. Moreover, the proposed unified design topology facilitates a relatively higher tuning range (1900 MHz) than that of the earlier reported (580 MHz) capacitor-based tunable complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR). The higher tuning range of structures resulted from the improved design configuration comprising a modified CSRR design coupled with a modified microstrip line. The obtained dielectric sensitivity is ∼8.8%. The numerically generated S-parameters of various dielectric samples are used here as a training dataset for the ANN, which is trained using the Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm in combination with the Bayesian regularization. Finally, several standard test samples at different unloaded tuned frequencies are measured to record the corresponding resonant frequency and magnitude of the S-parameter in order to process them using the proposed ANN-based sensor system. It is found that the developed ANN-based sensor system provides a reasonably accurate value of the extracted complex permittivity over the frequency range under consideration, which basically removes the need for designing multiple resonant structures unlikely to the conventional resonant sensors.

A multi-energy soft x-ray pinhole camera has been designed, built, and deployed at the Madison Symmetric Torus to aid the study of particle and thermal transport, as well as MHD stability physics. This novel imaging diagnostic technique employs a pixelated x-ray detector in which the lower energy threshold for photon detection can be adjusted independently on each pixel. The detector of choice is a PILATUS3 100 K with a 450 μm thick silicon sensor and nearly 100 000 pixels sensitive to photon energies between 1.6 and 30 keV. An ensemble of cubic spline smoothing functions has been applied to the line-integrated data for each time-frame and energy-range, obtaining a reduced standard-deviation when compared to that dominated by photon-noise. The multi-energy local emissivity profiles are obtained from a 1D matrix-based Abel-inversion procedure. Central values of Te can be obtained by modeling the slope of the continuum radiation from ratios of the inverted radial emissivity profiles over multiple energy ranges with no a priori assumptions of plasma profiles, magnetic field reconstruction constraints, high-density limitations, or need of shot-to-shot reproducibility. In tokamak plasmas, a novel application has recently been tested for early detection, 1D imaging, and study of the birth, exponential growth, and saturation of runaway electrons at energies comparable to 100 × Te,0; thus, early results are also presented.

Ohmic pulse heating is applied to investigate diffusion and interface controlled solid-state phase transformations. The developed device uses extensive solid-state electronics providing a high current, low voltage approach that overcomes the limitations of existing setups, most notably the use of sample geometries that allow for the reliable measurement of local temperatures and their assignment to microstructures. Power for heating is supplied by a capacitor array with adjustable voltage, and the process is controlled by microcontrollers and a solid-state relay, which allows for controlled pulses that are adjustable in microseconds. Electric currents of up to 22 kA at 90 V can be realized by the setup. Electric data are monitored and collected during the experiments, and temperature data are captured using a high-resolution infrared camera at high frame rates (1200 fps). The capabilities of the setup are demonstrated by rapid heating (106 K/s) and subsequent cooling of a brass sample. Two distinct areas of the sample are analyzed in detail, showing similar heating, but different cooling curves with rates of 104 and 102 K/s. Local microstructure analysis shows that different phase transformation mechanisms were dominant, and thus, the setup fulfills its purpose.

We developed a compact sized device for angular and energy analysis of charged particles in a wide acceptance cone angle of nearly 1π steradian. This device is configured from an electrostatic lens comprising an axisymmetric aspherical mesh, which has a concave shape viewed from the point source, a set of axisymmetric electrodes, planar grids, microchannel plates, and a fluorescent screen positioned coaxially. The potentials of electrodes are adjusted so that the trajectories of the electrons with arbitrarily set kinetic energy are substantially parallelized by the electrostatic lens and enter the planar grid perpendicularly. Instead of the planar grid, a collimator plate with parallel holes can be used as an energy band-pass filter. The angular distribution of electrons with the selected kinetic energy is projected directly onto the fluorescent screen without converging and passing through a pinhole. This is a simple but significant electron-optical design to obtain wide-range angular distribution with high angular resolution, and the analyzer can be suitably used for the two-dimensional angular distribution measurements of electrons and ions emitted from surfaces.

A new resonant-type inertial impact piezoelectric motor based on a cam locking mechanism was designed, assembled, and tested. The motor is composed of a stator, a rotor, and other auxiliary components. The cam clamping foot of the stator in contact with the inner surface of the rotor forms a cam locking mechanism, which can make the resonant vibration of the stator effective in a half cycle. By receiving sinusoidal signals, the stator generates bending deformation due to the regular deformation of the piezoelectric plate, which drives the cam clamping foot to move and subsequently causes the rotor to rotate. COMSOL5.4 finite element analysis software was used to design the structure of the piezoelectric motor, and an experimental device was built to evaluate and verify the performance of the motor. The maximum no-load speed of the prototype reached 21.61 rpm and the maximum load torque of the motor was 84 N mm under a driving voltage of 360 Vp–p and a driving frequency of 388 Hz. The motor achieved a net efficiency of 5.6% under a preload torque of 2 N mm with the same condition. The maximum resolution of the motion angle of the new motor prototype was 0.0748° with a driving voltage of 160 Vp–p and the same frequency.

The very short burn time and small size of burning plasmas created at advanced laser-fusion facilities will require high-spatial-resolution imaging diagnostics with fast time resolution. These instruments will need to function in an environment of extremely large neutron fluxes that will cause conventional diagnostics to fail because of radiation damage and induced background levels. One solution to this challenge is to perform an ultrafast conversion of the x-ray signals into the optical regime before the neutrons are able to reach the detector and then to relay image the signal out of the chamber and into a shielded bunker, protected from the effects of these neutrons. With this goal in mind, the OMEGA laser was used to demonstrate high-temporal-resolution x-ray imaging by using an x-ray snout to image an imploding backlighter capsule onto a semiconductor. The semiconductor was simultaneously probed with the existing velocity interferometry system for any surface reflector (VISAR) diagnostic, which uses an optical streak camera and provided a one-dimensional image of the phase in the semiconductor as a function of time. The phase induced in the semiconductor was linearly proportional to the x-ray emission from the backlighter capsule. This approach would then allow a sacrificial semiconductor to be attached at the end of an optical train with the VISAR and optical streak camera placed in a shielded bunker to operate in a high neutron environment and obtain time-dependent one-dimensional x-ray images or time-dependent x-ray spectra from a burning plasma.
