A new neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) detector for deuterium–deuterium (DD)-fusion yield and ion-temperature measurements was designed, installed, and calibrated for the OMEGA Laser Facility. This detector provides an additional line of sight for DD neutron yield and ion-temperature measurements for yields exceeding 1 × 1010 with higher precision than existing detectors. The nTOF detector consists of a 90-mm-diam, 20-mm-thick BC-422 scintillator and a gated Photek photomultiplier tube (PMT240). The PMT collects scintillating light through the 20-mm side of the scintillator without the use of a light guide. There is no lead shielding from hard x rays in order to allow the x-ray instrument response function of the detector to be measured easily. Instead, hard x-ray signals generated in implosion experiments are gated out by the PMT. The design provides a place for glass neutral-density filters between the scintillator and the PMT to avoid PMT saturation at high yields. The nTOF detector is installed in the OMEGA Target Bay along the P8A sub-port line of sight at a distance of 5.3 m from the target chamber center. In addition to DD measurements, the same detector can be used to measure the neutron yield and ion temperature from deuterium–tritium (DT) implosion targets in the 5 × 1010 to 2 × 1012 yield range. Particle counting analysis (PCA) with a multi-stage scintillation detector shows a new perspective on angularly resolved spectral characterization of GeV-scale, multi-species ion beams produced by high-power lasers. The diagnosis provides a mass-dependent ion energy spectrum based on time-of-flight and pulse-height analysis of single particle events detected through repetitive experiments. With a novel arrangement of multiple scintillators with different ions stopping powers, PCA offers potential advantages over commonly used diagnostic instruments (CR-39, radiochromic films, Thomson parabola, etc.) in terms of coverage solid angle, detection efficiency for GeV-ions, and real-time analysis during the experiment. The basic detector unit was tested using 230-MeV proton beam from a synchrotron facility, where we demonstrated its potential ability to discriminate major ion species accelerated in laser–plasma experiments (i.e., protons, deuterons, carbon, and oxygen ions) with excellent energy and mass resolution. The proposed diagnostic concept would be essential for a better understanding of laser-driven particle acceleration, which paves the way toward all-optical compact accelerators for a range of applications. Due to the shortage of the 3He gas and its rapidly increasing price, scintillator detectors, the advantages of which are high spatial resolution and capability of detection in real time, become widely used in many neutron instruments. In this work, a position-sensitive neutron detector consisting of a 6LiF/ZnS scintillation screen and a silicon photomultiplier array linked to a capacitive network to detect the positions of incident neutrons, is constructed and tested. To evaluate the detector performance, a series of neutron beam experiments with the detector prototype were performed in the BL20 at the China Spallation Neutron Source. The spatial resolution was measured, and the energy-selective neutron imaging and Bragg edge measurements of a 316L stainless steel sample were performed. A sub-millimeter spatial resolution could be obtained for the detector prototype under study. The detector with such a high spatial resolution is promising for applications in neutron scattering experimental installations, especially for neutron single-crystal diffractometers. Neutron–gamma discrimination (NGD) for gadolinium-containing scintillators is a challenging issue which prevents them from being used in highly efficient neutron detectors with high signal-to-noise ratios. Pulse-shape based digital-signal processing has been selected to tackle this issue, with an emphasis on the dimensionality reduction of the raw data and capability to mitigate the influence of noise, unwanted variations, and outliers on the accuracy of classification. We present two graph-embedded non-negative matrix factorization digital classifiers in which an event graph (or a network) is introduced to find a low-dimensional structure hidden in the high-dimensional experimental data. Utilizing energy-independent normalized features of waveforms and a graph composed of mixed-source reference events, the smooth or sparse low-dimensional representation of detector signals from a Ce:Gd3Al2Ga3O12 scintillator leads to a high thermal neutron detection efficiency (77%–80%) and a high NGD ratio (neutron–gamma efficiency ratio, ∼109) simultaneously. Moreover, excellent discrimination between neutron and ambient background events has been achieved. The proposed graph-embedded algorithms may be applied not only for thermal-neutron position-sensitive detectors and single-channel detectors but also for other radiation detectors that need excellent particle (or crystal) discrimination capabilities and high detection efficiencies in many applications, including medical imaging, nondestructive testing, and security scans. When using liquid scintillator detectors to measure the neutron emission spectrum from fusion plasmas, the problem of pile-up distortion can be significant. Because of the large neutron rates encountered in many fusion experiments, some pile-up distortion can remain even after applying traditional pile-up elimination methods, which alters the shape of the measured light-yield spectrum and influences the spectroscopic analysis. Particularly, pile-up events appear as a high-energy tail in the measured light-yield spectrum, which obfuscates the contribution that supra-thermal ions make to the energy spectrum. It is important to understand the behavior of such "fast ions" in fusion plasmas, and it is hence desirable to be able to measure their contribution to the neutron spectrum as accurately as possible. This paper presents a technique for incorporating distortion from undetected pile-up events into the analysis of the light-yield spectrum, hence compensating for pile-up distortion. The spectral contribution from undetected pile-up events is determined using Monte Carlo methods and is included in the spectroscopic study as a pile-up component. The method is applied to data from an NE213 scintillator detector at JET and validated by comparing with results from the time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR, which is not susceptible to pile-up distortion. Based on the results, we conclude that the suggested analysis method helps counteract the problem of pile-up effects and improves the possibilities for extracting accurate fast-ion information from the light-yield spectrum. A traditional neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) detector used in inertial confinement fusion consists of a scintillator coupled with a photomultiplier tube (PMT). The instrument response function (IRF) of such a detector is dominated by the scintillator-light decay. In DT implosions with neutron yield larger than 1013, a novel detector consisting of a microchannel-plate (MCP) photomultiplier tube in a housing without a scintillator (PMT nTOF) can be used to measure DT yield, ion temperature, and neutron velocity. Most of the neutron signals in PMT nTOF detectors are produced from neutron interaction with a PMT window. The direct interaction of neutrons with the MCP provides negligible contribution. The elimination of the scintillator removes the scintillator decay from the instrument response function and makes the IRF of the PMT nTOF detector faster, which makes the ion temperature and neutron velocity measurements more accurate. Three PMT nTOF detectors were deployed in the OMEGA laser system for the first time to diagnose inertial confinement fusion plasma. The design details, characteristics, and calibration results of these detectors in DT implosions on OMEGA are presented. We report an all-solid-state gamma-ray scintillation detector comprised of a NaI(Tl) crystal and a scientific-grade CMOS camera. After calibration, this detector exhibits excellent linearity over more than three decades of activity levels ranging from 10 mCi to 400 nCi. Because the detector is not counting pulses, dead-time correction is not required. Compared to systems that use a photomultiplier tube, this detector has similar sensitivity and noise characteristics on short time scales. On longer time scales, we measure drifts of a few percent over several days, which can be accommodated through regular calibration. Using this detector, we observe that when high activity sources are brought into close proximity to the NaI crystal, several minutes are required for the measured signal to achieve a steady state.
