The high intensity proton injector for the international accelerator Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research located at GSI-Darmstadt in Germany consists of a pulsed 2.45 GHz microwave ion source, a Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), and an electrostatic chopper matching the proton beam to the radio frequency quadrupole. The ion source is based on electron cyclotron resonance plasma production and it has to provide a proton beam at 95 keV energy and up to 100 mA current. The LEBT system with two short solenoids each including two magnetic steerers will transport the proton beam into the compact proton linac, accelerating it to the energy of 68 MeV and serving as the injector of the upgraded heavy ion synchrotron (SIS18). This paper describes the commissioning of the proton injector including beam characterization measurements that have been done at CEA/Saclay in France and is currently at the final commissioning stage. Active (beam-based) spectroscopic measurements are intended to provide a number of crucial parameters for the ITER device being built in Cadarache, France. These measurements include the determination of impurity ion temperatures, absolute densities, and velocity profiles, as well as the determination of the plasma current density profile. Because ITER will be the first experiment to study long timescale (∼1 h) fusion burn plasmas, of particular interest is the ability to study the profile of the thermalized helium ash resulting from the slowing down and confinement of the fusion alphas. These measurements will utilize both the 1 MeV heating neutral beams and a dedicated 100 keV hydrogen diagnostic neutral beam. A number of separate instruments are being designed and built by several of the ITER partners to meet the different spectroscopic measurement needs and to provide the maximum physics information. In this paper, we describe the planned measurements, the intended diagnostic ensemble, and we will discuss specific physics and engineering challenges for these measurements in ITER. This paper consists of a general presentation of the Storage Ring FEL activities at LURE (Orsay). We first summarize the results obtained previously with an optical klystron installed on the ACO storage ring, and then make a presentation of the different projects that have begun on the new storage ring Super-ACO. The ACO storage ring experiments were of two kinds: the Free Electron Laser oscillator (FEL), and the coherent harmonic generation (CHG). The first allowed us to reach the visible spectral range, between 6500 and 4600 Å. In the second, we were able to produce coherent emission in the VUV: it was the shortest wavelengths (1773 and 1064 Å) ever obtained with an optical klystron or an undulator acting as a nonlinear medium. In this last configuration, the fundamental wave was an external pulsed and doubled Nd-Yag laser, focused in the optical klystron. The new Super-ACO storage ring has been equipped with a new optical klystron. The first ‘‘spontaneous emission’’ spectra have been observed and they show that the performance is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. FEL oscillator experiments in the visible range are planned for the end of the year. In parallel, CHG experiments in the VUV will begin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An x-ray grating spectrometer was built in order to measure opacities in the 50 eV to 250 eV spectral range with an average spectral resolution ∼ 50. It has been used at the LULI-2000 laser facility at École Polytechnique (France) to measure the Δn = 0, n = 3 transitions of several elements with neighboring atomic number: Cr, Fe, Ni, and Cu in the same experimental conditions. Hence a spectrometer with a wide spectral range is required. This spectrometer features one line of sight looking through a heated sample at backlighter emission. It is outfitted with one toroidal condensing mirror and several flat mirrors cutting off higher energy photons. The spectral dispersion is obtained with a flatfield grating. Detection consists of a streak camera sensitive to soft x-ray radiation. Some experimental results showing the performance of this spectrometer are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
