This paper investigates the impacts of economic (in)stability on carbon emissions and the role of renewable energy in these effects at the crossroads of accelerated climate change and rising global economic instability. The paper hypothesizes that these implications should be examined not by direct impacts across variables, but rather via indirect effects serially mediated by renewable energy consumption and economic growth. This paper analyzes the United States from January 1980 and April 2022 using manifest structural equation modeling. The paper reaches two major conclusions. First, there are clear distinctions between (i) the direct and indirect effects of economic stability, surrogated by inflation and policy interest rate, on carbon emissions, (ii) the symmetric and asymmetric indirect effects, and (iii) the roles of aggregate renewable energy and its components, such as biomass and hydropower energy use, in mediating these symmetric and asymmetric indirect effects. This paper examines the impact of green finance on environmental performance in developing countries. Using panel cointegration analysis and panel vector error correction model (VECM) to a sample of 76 developing economies from 2010 to 2019, this study confirms that carbon emissions (CO 2) is cointegrated with green finance, real gross domestic product, urbanization, and renewable energy under different specifications and therefore we estimate the long-run relationships among these variables. Specifically, both green finance and renewable energy are found to exert significant and inhibitory effects on CO 2 emissions, reaffirming the necessity to promote green finance and renewable energy. Results from the paper also document the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve and the increasing effects of urbanization on CO 2 emissions. The primary purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of two variables, trade openness and the issuance of green bonds, on the consumption of renewable energy in Southeast Asian countries. Quarterly data throughout 2016–2021 in the framework of the panel data method were used for the case of 6 selected countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). The results confirmed that the issuance of green bonds is an effective green financing tool in the implementation of the development policy of the deployment of renewable energy in the countries of the Southeast Asian region. The degree of trade openness has a driving effect on increasing renewable energy consumption due to the increased possibility of transferring green technologies and increasing interactions with leading countries in the field of sustainable development. Asia, the continent most vulnerable to climate change, presents policymakers with the dual challenges of significant income inequality and a scarcity of alternative energy sources. This paper investigates the impact of climate change on income inequality, and the role of renewable energy in moderating this impact for a panel data set of 36 Asian countries over the period of 1990–2021. Results from panel data analysis techniques show that climate change exacerbates the income inequality while renewable energy not only reduces income inequality but also lessens the detrimental impact of climate change on income equality through the channels of job creation and access to renewable energy. Remarkably, the role of renewable energy becomes stronger in those countries that are more exposed to climate change. The findings are robust with different estimation methods as well as various proxies of climate change and income inequality. These results highlight the critical role of renewable energy policies in promoting both environmental sustainability and socioeconomic equity. Despite their economic success, the BRICS countries have yet to achieve environmental sustainability. On the other hand, these countries will not be able to maintain their economic expansion if they do not protect the natural environment. In this regard, this paper intends to assess the effects of financial integration (globalization) on ecological footprint. The paper also considers other ecological footprint drivers, including economic expansion, urbanization, renewable energy and technological innovation. The research utilizes a dataset spanning from 1990 to 2018. The study employed the method of moments quantile regression (MMQR) approach, which is robust to cross-sectional dependence and slope homogeneity issues. The outcomes from the MMQR disclose that the effect of financial globalization on ecological footprint is positive across all quantiles (0.1–0.90), thus validating the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH) in the BRICS nations. Furthermore, both renewable energy and technological innovation curb ecological footprint across all quantiles (0.1–0.90). Moreover, technological innovation is proven to impact the environment positively across all quantiles (0.1–0.90) via the path of urbanization. As a result, technological innovation is projected to help the BRICS nations achieve sustainable urbanization. The DOLS, FMOLS, FE-OLS outcomes also validate the outcomes of MMQR. This paper uses panel data on renewable energy in China. Thus, the current analysis fills the gaps by examining the relationship between green technology innovation and renewable energy and CO 2 emissions from 1990 to 2018. The current study examines all concerns connected to panel data analysis with advanced panel estimators, such as cross-sectional dependence, stationarity, variation in slope parameters, and structural break. Our findings show that test results reveal that green technology innovation and renewable energy have a negative and considerable influence on CO2 emissions in the long run. Moreover, the short-run relationship of green technology innovation, on the other hand, is not significant—as evidenced by the findings of robustness tests such as AMG and CCEMG. Other empirical results revealed that GTI, REN and NEN significantly reduced local CO 2 emission, while POP and PI had no obvious reduction effects on CO 2 emissions. Different GTIs had the same spatial "symbiotic effects" on CO 2 emission reduction in the short term, showing positive spatial spillover reduction effects. Lastly, we conclude that the use of green technology innovation has positive externalities. Renewable energy adaptation can play a critical role to halt climate change, although many researchers in the past tried to estimate its effect toward the environment, but the findings are still unclear and complex due to limitation of data and adopted methodologies. Therefore, to overcome the weaknesses, this paper aims to re-investigate the role of renewable energy adaptation, financial development and globalization toward environmental quality and economic progress in leading economies, we call it big five economies (B5) of the world. These economies (USA, China, UK, Germany, and Japan) were chosen based on ranking by the IMF. In this paper, we applied panel techniques for data analysis including panel data unit roots test, padroni cointegration analysis and panel data FMOLS and panel DOLS. Further, to explore country specific results and to ensure the robustness of findings, frequency domain causality test was applied. Results of estimation reveal that renewable energy adaptation mitigate the environmental impact to improve environmental quality and reinforce economic progress in B5 countries. Although, financial development, capital formation, natural resources and globalization improve economic progress, but these factors create adverse consequence for the environmental quality. Similarly, it can be stated that it's a tradeoff between economy and the environment. Further, the role of trade is found as constructive for environmental quality and economic progress in B5 economies. Using panel data of 102 countries from 1990 to 2018, this research investigates the varying effect of renewable energy policies on renewable energy green innovation along with the distribution of green innovation. The panel quantile model with additive fixed effect is adopted in this paper, and the research conclusions are as follows. (1) Green innovation positively correlates with national renewable energy policy. (2) Renewable policy is more effective in countries with stronger green innovation capacity. (3) In five different areas of renewable energy, renewable policy is unable to promote green innovation in the lowest innovative countries. (4) Renewable policy exerts the smallest influence on green innovation of geothermal energy compared to other renewable energies. Global economy is developing rapidly and consequently energy requirements has been focused, particularly in developing countries. There are potentials of using renewable energies in the cities and Islands located in Iranian Seas. In this study, five locations in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, combining of wind and solar energies have been considered. This paper evaluates the best locations for using different renewable energies in some important cities in the south of Iran. The paper presents a comparative study among different hybrid renewable energies (Wind and Solar) in five cities of Iran located in the coast of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman namely, Kish Island, Qeshm Island, Chabahar, Jask, and Genaveh. To evaluate the feasibility of using renewable energies in the above-mentioned locations, four types of building namely; hospital, large hotel, medium office, and strip mall have been analyzed. HOMER Software has been used to analyze and optimize different configurations. Considering the load profiles of chosen cases, the optimum solution for different configuration along with cost summary is obtained and analyzed. The simulation results presents that Kish Island owns the most load profile among other cities and PV-Diesel-Battery-Converter is the most suitable hybrid system, which possesses the optimum cost for the considered buildings. Moreover, Chabahar has mostly the most amount of carbon emission for the proposed case studies and owns the maximum lowest cost system among all considered cities except in the case of large hotel where Jask has the maximum initial capital cost. System risks caused by volatility spillover would possibly threaten the stability of financial markets. Effective control of volatility spillover is conducive to prevent of financial system risks. Therefore, this paper studies volatility spillover in the main renewable energy markets from 2010 to 2019 and analyzes how risks spread in hope of finding effective management to reduce financial system risks. For this purpose, this paper identifies the volatility spillover effect from a multidimensional perspective by using the BEKK model and reveals the risk spread path by using the multidimensional analysis method. Further, the risk spread relationships among the renewable energy markets are comprehensively analyzed. The main findings of the paper are: (1) The volatility spillover in the renewable energy markets tends to exist in the high dimensions. (2) In the renewable energy market system, the volatility spillover relationships involving multiple markets are more complicated than those between two markets. (3) The fuel cell energy market and solar energy markets occupy a significant position in the path of risk spread which should be paid more attention by policymakers to prevent financial system risks. Power-to-ammonia (P2A) technology has attracted more and more attention since ammonia is recognized as a natural zero-carbon fuel. In this context, this paper constructs a renewable energy powered multi-energy hub (MEH) system which integrates with a thermo-electrochemical effect based P2A facility. Subsequently, the energy management of proposed MEH system is casted to a multi-agent coordinated optimization problem, which aims to minimize operating cost and carbon dioxide emissions while satisfying constraints. Then, a novel multi-agent deep reinforcement learning method called CommNet is applied to solve this problem to obtain the optimal coordinated energy management strategy of each energy hub by achieving the distributed computation of global information. At present, energy represents a key element in the social and economic development of a territory. This is particularly true for fragile territories that are not interconnected, such as small island states. As is true for many of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) worldwide, the energy situation of the Comoros is substantially based on fossil fuel imports. The socioeconomic development of this archipelago is overwhelmingly dependent on energy security from sustainability, availability and affordability perspectives. As a forward-looking response to energy vulnerability, the deployment of renewables to diversify the generation of electricity appears to be an essential prerequisite for guaranteeing a sustainable future. Nevertheless, despite a high potential for renewable energy, only 3.8% of the electricity supply in the Comoros is provided by hydropower. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the energy situation throughout the Comoros and focuses on renewable energy opportunities to facilitate the supply of green power. This study ultimately shows that renewable energies are rarely exploited despite the powerful potential of different resources. World electricity consumption has grown permanently since 1990, dramatically increasing the emission of greenhouse gases. The worldwide efforts to reduce them and address climate change are leading to the massive electrification of different end-users, increasing the power demand. Therefore, achieving Sustainable Development Goals regarding affordable and clean energy requires the extensive availability of capital investments in electricity generation from renewable sources. Project Finance (PF) is a suitable financing alternative for large projects. This paper presents the advantages of PF contracts in allocating risks to appropriate counterparts and reducing the likelihood of default. Additionally, this study analyzes the characteristics that favor PF financing for renewable energy projects. The results reveal that country's governance levels, well-developed financial systems, and project costs affect the financing probability of a PF initiative, particularly for low and middle-income countries. The fundamental way for China to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality is to continuously improve the penetration of renewable energy (RE) in the power system and establish an electricity mix dominated by RE power. According to China's 14th Five-Year Plan, the proportion of non-fossil energy power generation should reach about 39% by 2025. However, the impact of the increase in share of RE power on carbon emissions of the electricity sector remains to be estimated. To this end, the purpose of this paper is to capture the nonlinear characteristics of RE on electricity-related carbon emissions by using panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model and provincial panel data covering the period 1991–2020 under the background of provincial RE quota system. The estimation results indicate that, (i) in the four transition variables of PSTR model such as the installed capacity of power generation, substation equipment capacity, total electricity consumption and total power generation, the nexus between RE deployment and electricity-related carbon emissions was detected as nonlinear. (ii) The heterogeneous RE carbon abatement effect is reflected in its increasing penetration in provincial power systems. (iii) Carbon abatement performance of RE generation decreases in the negative range with the increase of transition variables. (iv) The estimation coefficient of RE is positive at the higher value of the transition variable in the PSTR model of carbon emissions per capita. As a result, the RE quota with the best emission abatement performance should be designed based on the provincial power resource endowment and the medium and long-term expected electricity consumption. This paper aims to examine the relationship between oil prices and the indices of renewable energy and technology companies using Quantile Regression (QR.), Quantile-on-Quantile Regression (QQR), and Granger-Causality in Quantiles (GCQ) techniques. The results show strong evidence of an asymmetric effect at the sum of oil prices and technology companies' index on clean energy, indicating that the relationship is vital when these variables decrease than increase. The main finding of the QQR method demonstrates that the impact of oil prices and the technology stock index on clean energy is higher at the upper quantile than the lower quantile. We also establish bi-directional GCQ indicating the considerable change in oil price led to a change in renewable energy; besides, the outcome of the change in renewable energy does not support the causal link to the variation in oil prices across lower extreme quantile at 1%. Finally, our findings support the bi-directional causality from the tech companies market to the conventional and unconventional energy markets. In this paper, we explore the co-movements between renewable and non-renewable energy sources and CO 2 emissions and GDP per capita in Saudi Arabia, respectively. Using the spectral Granger causality approach, our results suggested that non-renewable energy sources lead to carbon emission expansion in the frequency domain. Taken together, a significant causal relationship from fossil to economic growth is perceived over the long-term horizon while renewable energy source drives economic growth over different frequencies and considerably contributes to carbon emissions reduction. The wavelet plots revealed strong discrepancies in all variables in the time-frequency space. While non-renewable energy sources indorsed the economic growth across short-and medium-term scales and contribute to a polluted environment, renewable energy consumption has a substantial effect on carbon emission drop and on economic growth in the short-term. The multiple wavelet outcomes show that renewable energy may not only stimulate the economic growth but also promote sustainable and cleaner environment. The development of information and communication technology (ICT), a subset of many functions such as visual communication, can positively affect renewable energy development in different countries. In this paper, focusing on China as the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, the relationship between visual communication and the deployment of renewable energy is investigated using the dynamic ARDL (autoregressive distributed lag) method and annual data from 1990 to 2021. Regarding the empirical estimations, a 1% increase in green finance market size leads to an improvement of sustainable energy deployment by 0.01%. In addition, the ICT development index has a significant and positive effect only in the long term. Furthermore, there is evidence of uni-directional causality from ICT to renewable energy deployment in the medium and long term. Many subarctic communities rely entirely on fossil fuels for their energy needs. Solar-assisted ground-coupled heat pumps (SAGCHP) can be a solution to integrate renewable energy sources into their energy portfolios. However, it is currently unknown how such systems could operate in the context of the high North (cold ground, extreme mismatch between insolation and heating need, electricity from diesel). The objective of the paper is to develop a detailed model of a SAGCHP heating a house in Nunavik (Quebec, Canada) in order to gain a better understanding of its potential and limitations. The solar assistance is provided by PVs. Simulations with and without electric storage (batteries) were run. A complex tradeoff between four different modes of operation was obtained depending on the conditions of the system at each time step. For the test case, results show that the ground experiences a weak long-term thermal depletion partly compensated solar energy, but that a significant portion of the PV power production is preferably used by the compressor or stored in batteries rather than stored in the ground as heat. Short-term forecasting of electricity generation from variable renewable energy sources is not an end in itself but should provide some net benefit to its user. In the case of electricity trading, which is in the focus of this paper, the benefit can be quantified in terms of an improved economic outcome. Although some effort has been made to evaluate and to improve the profitability of electricity forecasts, the understanding of the underlying effects has remained incomplete so far. In this paper, we develop a more comprehensive theoretical framework of the connection between the statistical and the economic properties of day-ahead electricity forecasts. We find that, apart from the accuracy and the bias, which have already been extensively researched, the correlation between the forecast errors and the market price spread determines the economic implications - a phenomenon which we refer to as 'correlation effect'. The primary purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impacts of green finance on green energy deployment in China's tourism industry. To this end, the annual data over 1992–2021 through the ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lag) approach for the case of China are analyzed. The findings confirm that the issued green bonds positively impact the green efficiency of China's tourism industry in the long term. In contrast, the coefficient of issued green bonds is insignificant for the short-term approach. In addition, in the short and long term, the consumer price index also has a significant adverse effect on the green efficiency of China's tourism industry. The lack of partnerships between biomass generating producers is one of the main barriers to efficient biogas production. Partnerships can help producers properly dispose of waste, assist in the supply of biodigesters, allow the union of properties with different potential biomass generators into clusters, and optimize operating costs. In this sense, new measures must be adopted with regard to the establishment of strategic partnerships between producers. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new clustering algorithm, BiogasCluster , to decide the optimal number of clusters for generating a renewable energy community. To test the proposed algorithm's applicability, we implemented the algorithm in R language. Experiments with real databases showed that the BiogasCluster proved to be efficient in generating stable clusters for all considered scenarios. It was also found that the filters and criteria used in the proposed algorithm have not been used in previous studies. This study provides important guidance to creating strategic partnerships within bioenergy generation in addition to obtaining a preliminary assessment of the possibility of establishing clusters of rural properties with the aim of achieving energy security and adding value to their businesses. This paper investigates the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis for the G7 group of countries through the ecological footprint and its components (namely built-up land, carbon, cropland, fishing grounds, forest land, and grazing land). Most previous contributions rely on CO 2 emissions as a measure of environmental damage, whereas using disaggregated ecological footprint allows us to consider resource consumption and waste generation compared to nature's resource generation and waste absorption. The empirical application is based on a panel data analysis for G7 countries from 1980 to 2018. The results indicate that the EKC hypothesis is confirmed for the ecological footprint overall, but the impact of GDP growth is unequal across its components. Long-term elasticities point to renewable energy generation significantly improving environmental sustainability. Renewable energy attracts increasing attention from both industry and academia under the context of carbon neutrality. For wind and solar energy, the strong dependence on natural processes results in the imbalance between energy production and real demands. Energy storage technologies, e.g., Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), are promising solutions to increase the renewable energy penetration. However, the CAES system is a multi-component structure with multiple energy forms involved in the process subject to high temperature and high-pressure working conditions. The CAES system is a complex process flowsheet consisting of charging and discharging process. The process should be optimized to achieve the best thermodynamic and economic performance. Under the optimal design conditions, it might lead to severe consequences once a failure occurs, e.g., harm to humans, the environment, and assets. Limited attention and scarce available information have been paid to the CAES system risk management yet. Hence, this paper applies the System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), which is a top-down method based on system theory, to identify the CAES system safety hazards. The results are expected to provide a preliminary guideline for practitioners regarding the safety and reliability of the CAES system. The combination of biomass and solar energy in the combined cooling heating and power (CCHP) system is conducive to reducing carbon dioxide emissions of the system. To improve the system's economic performance under the punishment of carbon tax, this paper optimizes the system from system design and operation strategies. A hybrid renewable energy CCHP system with shaft power distribution structure of an internal combustion engine (ICE) is proposed. By optimizing the shaft power distribution of ICE, the direct drive heat pump is realized, and the efficiency of the shaft power of ICE is improved. A double-layer optimization method considering the long and short-term benefits is proposed based on the system, fully improving the system economy in design and operation. The case study shows that the CCHP system reduces the annual cost by 40.37% and the CO 2 emission by 88.93% compared with the separate production system. Compared with the non-shaft power distribution system, the maximum daily operation cost is saved by 557.11CNY. Compared with the hourly optimization method, the proposed optimization method based on total daily benefit reduces the annual cost by 7.73% and CO 2 emission by 35.87%, and the utilization rate of the energy storage device is higher. We analyzed the nonlinear and asymmetric effects of green finance and renewable energy on energy efficiency. We collected data from 1985 to 2017 and applied the NARDL and 2SLS methods. The results reveal that the differences in green finance development in the E−7 region are as follows: China (0.61), Brazil (0.55), India (0.53), Indonesia (0.49), Mexico (0.37), and Russia (0.39). In 2019, the Gini coefficient was the largest in Russia (0.57), followed by Turkey. Based on empirical findings, the largest barrier to green energy efficiency is insufficient private and governmental investment in the energy sector to improve access to power, to increase energy security and promote economic growth in an environmentally sustainable manner. The findings point to a promising but vulnerable future for renewable energy and energy efficiency deployment in E−7 countries. This paper investigates the connectedness among the climate change index, green financial assets, renewable energy markets, and geopolitical risk index from June 1, 2012 to June 13, 2022, using Quantile Vector Autoregressive (QVAR) and wavelet coherence (WC). The Total connectedness index (TCI) varies as long as the highest TCI originates in the upper quantile. We also note that the higher TCI decreases after the second wave of COVID-19 and increases during the first 100 days of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Moreover, the results show that Geopolitical risk (GPR) is a net transmitter of the climate change index during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The green bond and clean energy markets are negatively connected to the GPR at extreme 10 th and 90 th quantiles. The wavelet coherence confirms the QVAR results that the climate change market can be a safe haven against GPR during the Russian invasion. The climate change index, green financial assets, and clean energy are strong influencers in the financial markets and are vital to international peace, reducing geopolitical risk. Hydropower renewable energy is known to be pro-environment: flexible and affordable. Above all, it is compatible with other energy frames and also with the policies that otherwise prove to be inimical towards its future. Where environmental stability is concerned it needs an assiduous study coupled with research by the policymakers to get around knowing the different perspectives of hydropower renewable energy. The study has taken nine different and diverse perspectives of hydropower renewable energy into account to stop the process of environmental degradation. EKC framework has been put to use in a case study of South and East Asia economies. Time period has been selected from 1975 to 2020 to measure the long-term impact. GMM model has been used for the panel estimation besides getting future dynamics. The results which have come about confirmed EKC in the selected countries. Non-renewable energy (coal and gas) had an adverse impact on environmental stability. However, switching towards hydropower renewable energy can mitigate these environmental losses. Empirical findings have proved that more use of clean energy production can bring about a considerable amount of environmental stability. Insofar as East Asia economies are considered they have reached the second stage of EKC with a turning point of $13844 (per capita income). This paper, therefore, suggests that the future depends upon renewable hydropower energies in South and East Asia economies. Innovation and adaptation of renewable energy technologies significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and increase energy efficiency. Understanding the convergence patterns in renewable energy innovation will enable policymakers to design policies to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy consumption and reduce CO2 emissions. This paper applies the convergence algorithm proposed by Philips and Sul to assess the convergence in renewable energy innovation for 90 countries covering the period between 1993 and 2018. This paper also examines the determinants/factors driving the convergence clubs of the countries using Probit and Logit regression. The convergence analyses suggest that there is no global convergence in renewable energy innovation. Findings highlight two convergence clubs: i) a club comprising more innovative countries and ii) another club that includes less innovative countries. We find that countries with higher income per capita, CO2 emissions per capita, research and development (R&D) investment, better environmental regulations and stronger institutional settings are more likely to be part of the innovative club. Countries should increase their R&D investment and environmental regulations and improve their institutional quality to increase their likelihood of belonging to a more innovative club. Pathways to decarbonisation are commonly explored by government and industry through the use of energy system models. However, such models rarely consider where new energy infrastructure might be located. This is problematic as the spatial context of new renewable energy infrastructure will determine, in part, the environmental, social, and technical impacts of the energy transition. This paper presents the ADVENT-NEV model which brings together innovations in energy and natural capital modelling to identify the optimal locations of multiple renewable energy technologies at a national scale and high spatial resolution. Using Great Britain as a case study, the results show how the spatial distribution of renewable energy technologies changes when a natural capital approach is taken. In particular, the least-cost locations for onshore wind farms and bioenergy crops are highly influenced by the value of carbon sequestration, or emissions associated with their land use change. Siting using a natural capital approach produced appreciable ecosystem service benefits, such that the overall welfare gain to society was estimated at nearly £25 B. Overall, this paper demonstrates that understanding the geospatial context of the energy transition is essential to identifying which renewable energy pathways are consistent with decarbonisation and environmental objectives. The modern lifestyle and economic development of the European Union countries are closely connected to high energy consumption and environmental pollution. Renewable energy has arisen as one solution to this problem, even though the obstacles and challenges regarding the deployment of renewable energy lie in high costs, technology and legislation. The investigation of the determinants of renewable energy has become very attractive and popular because of the Sustainable Development Goals and COP26 targets. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the role of energy taxes and environmental taxes in addition to that of economic and environmental indicators in renewable energy development for the panel of EU countries by applying reliable and robust econometric techniques to the annual data from 1995 to 2019. The empirical results suggest that an increase in economic growth and oil prices supports renewable energy while environmental taxes and energy taxes have a negative impact on renewable energy deployment in EU countries. This paper studies the production decisions of a power plant with two different risk attitudes, in which the power plant faces the risks of uncertainty in renewable energy production, and two types of risk attitudes are considered, namely, risk neutrality and risk aversion. First, we construct the optimization models of a power plant with two different risk attitudes under the Feed-in-Tariffs (FIT) policy, and obtain the optimal outcomes by solving the models, including the optimal output and the expected profit. Then, by comparing the optimal outcomes under the two risk attitudes, we reveal the impacts of the different risk attitudes of power plants on their power production decisions. In addition, we also give an extended study to analyze the change from the FIT policy to the market-oriented Tradable Green Certificates (TGC) policy. The results show that the expected profit of the power plant decreases if it switches from risk-neutral to risk-averse, and the fossil energy output of the risk-neutral power plant is higher than that of the risk-averse power plant if the difference between the levelized costs of renewable energy and fossil energy exceeds a certain threshold. The European Union's ambitious target of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 necessitates a transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources. Hydrogen has emerged as a promising alternative, particularly as a fuel for large-scale transportation, including heavy-duty vehicles. The fleet buses in Ajaccio travel 1 494 007.9 km per year, responsible for 1453.67 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Utilizing green hydrogen, derived from renewable sources, can reduce these emissions by 87.3 %. This paper conducts a comprehensive techno-economic analysis of a hydrogen refueling station, aiming to foster the adoption of this technology and gain widespread acceptance. Our objective is to determine the economic viability of a hydrogen station capable of producing 440 kg of hydrogen daily. The Levelized Hydrogen Cost (LHC) is found to be 6.95 €/kg over a 20-year lifespan with electrolyzers operating at a power of 4.5 MW. The total installation cost amounts to 22 324 617 €. Remarkably, the return on investment is realized in the 11th year of operation. Electrolyzers account for 46 % of the system's total CAPEX and 29 % of its OPEX, indicating that advancements in electrolyzer technology will play a crucial role in reducing production costs. Our findings underscore the economic viability of the hydrogen refueling station, with a compelling LHC value indicative of its cost-effectiveness. When powered by electricity, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), an emerging mode of transportation, possess the capacity to reduce exhaust emissions greatly. However, accurately measuring carbon emissions in urban transportation remains a challenge, especially considering emissions from electricity generation and gasoline consumption. This paper proposes an innovative method for calculating CAVs' carbon emissions distribution, utilizing both renewable and non-renewable energy. The study employs SUMO, an agent-based simulation platform, to develop an intelligent driver model and cooperative adaptive cruise control modules, tracking vehicle movement behavior across various vehicle types, including Gasoline Vehicles (GVs), Electric Vehicles (EVs), Human-Driven Vehicles (HDVs), and CAVs. Subsequently, a lifecycle electric carbon emission model is constructed, integrating the energy consumption model of EVs with carbon emission factors of renewable and non-renewable energy. Visualization models are then developed to clarify the carbon emission distribution within the traffic network. A case study conducted in Suzhou, China validates the model, analyzing the spatiotemporal distribution of carbon emissions. Results show EVs can reduce carbon emissions by 70%–90 % compared to GVs on urban roads during rush hour, while CAVs can further reduce emissions by 35%–50 % compared to HDVs. The exploitation and utilisation of solar energy is challenging because of both diurnal and seasonal variation. Seasonal thermal energy storage is a prominent solution to solve the problem of seasonal variation of solar production. This paper investigates both the optimal design and energy management of a renewable energy plant with seasonal thermal energy storage. As a case study, the thermal, cooling and electrical energy demands of a university campus during one year are considered. Three scenarios, characterized by a different available area (20,555 m2, area covered at present; 50,000 m2, potentially available area by exploiting the entire rooftop and parking area; unlimited area) for solar thermal collectors and photovoltaic panels are investigated. In the first two scenarios, the exploitation of solar energy allows a primary energy saving of 31% and 57%, respectively compared to the use of a conventional plant. The seasonal storage reaches an overall efficiency (thus considering both charging and discharging) up to 84%. Finally, the analysis of the third scenario shows that the feasibility of meeting the energy demands by only exploiting solar energy is technically challenging because a large area equal to about 100,293 m2 is needed for solar thermal collectors and photovoltaic panels. The sustainability of economic growth has recently become a major objective for the global economy. Innovation is a newly emerged key factor for an efficient energy market and sustainable development. It can reduce pollution by increasing production efficiency (the first effect of CO 2 e reduction) and direct involvement in renewable energy development (the second effect of CO 2 e reduction) by replacing fossil fuel instruments with their counterparts that rely on renewable energy. The main question of this research is: Will the impact of innovation on per capita CO2e be the same on a threshold with different levels of renewable energy consumption? This paper explores the impact of innovation on CO 2 emissions in a panel of 29 selected EU countries from 2000 to 2019 using the fixed-effect panel threshold model. The results indicated that innovation had a significantly negative effect on per capita CO 2 e. In the early levels of the use of renewable energy, innovations have been directed more towards clean energy (the second effect on CO 2 e). Innovations were directed more towards clean energy in using renewable energy at early levels. It can be concluded that this policy has led to more innovation in clean energy production and more use of renewable energy, thus reducing CO2e considerably (the second effect). Although the socio-economic determinants of terrorism are conducted by many researchers using different samples and time spans, the impact of renewable energy consumption on terrorism has been ignored for a long time. To bridge the gap, this paper aims to investigate the impact of renewable energy consumption on terrorism regarding economic growth, non-renewable energy consumption, and income inequality over the period straddling 1990 and 2019 for a panel of the USA, China, India, Iran, Germany, and Russia. We employ the CUP-FM and CUP-BC estimators to reveal the long-run relationship between variables. The empirical findings suggest that renewable energy consumption has a negative impact on terrorism. A 1% increase in renewable energy consumption decreases terrorism by 0.315% and 0.631%, according to the CUP-FM and CUP-BC estimators, respectively. Economic growth also has a negative impact on terrorism, whereas non-renewable energy consumption and income inequality positively affect terrorism. Our empirical findings highlighted that renewable energy consumption and economic growth are crucial for combating terrorism in these countries. The energy-growth nexus has been explored extensively by researchers and academia; however, the role of cleaner energy, especially in the context of emerging economies, i.e., Nex-11 countries, have been ignored. Therefore, to fill the gap in the literature, this paper considers a non-parametric panel method, to test directly for the importance of renewable energy in economic performance for Next eleven (N-11) countries. The econometric estimations—which focused on a panel of N-11 countries—determined that: (i) renewable energy consumption boosts economic growth in short run only; and (ii) industry value added, human development, and consumption expenditures accelerate economic, whereas globalization decrease it. Hence, all countries need to reduce the risk associated with renewable energy so that to make them effective for economic growth. Moreover, there is a need to provide different types of invested capital for ongoing activities of renewable energy production. This research examines the effect of environmental policy stringency on green innovation in renewable energy technology and whether the green innovation response differs with varying degrees of environmental policy. Based on panel data of 33 countries over the period 1990–2015, we show that a stringent environmental policy does encourage green innovation in renewable energy technology, and this impact is more pronounced in OECD countries and high-income countries. More specifically, a stringent non-market-based environmental policy induces more patents in renewable energy generation. The findings also show that a stringent environmental policy yields green innovation for geothermal energy, hydro energy, and marine energy, but not for wind energy and solar energy. Heterogeneity analysis suggests that innovation capacity and environmental pressure enhance the impact of environmental policy stringency on green innovation in the renewable energy field. Finally, the paper presents that clean energy investment plays the role of a mechanism through which environmental policy stringency spurs green innovation in the renewable energy field, offering insights into the influence of environmental policy stringency on green innovation. Abstract Currently, renewable energy is rapidly developing across the world in response to technical, economic and environmental developments, as well as political and social initiatives. On the other hand, excessive penetration of distributed generation (DG) systems into electrical networks may lead to various problems and operational limit violations, such as over and under voltages, excessive line losses, overloading of transformers and feeders, protection failure and high harmonic distortion levels exceeding the limits of international standards. These problems occur when the system exceeds its hosting capacity (HC) limit. The HC is a transactive approach that provides a way for the distribution network to be integrated with different types of energy systems. Accordingly, HC assessment and enhancements become an essential target for both distribution system operators and DG investors. This paper provides, for the first time, a systematic and extensive overview of the HC research, developments, assessment techniques and enhancement technologies. The paper consists of four HC principal sections: historical developments, performance limits, perceptions and enhancement techniques. Besides, practical experiences of system operators, energy markets and outcomes gained from real case studies are presented and discussed. It was concluded that success in integrating more distributed generation hinges on accurate hosting capacity assessment. In view of the climate crisis, the development and the path of growth and expansion of renewable energy systems is an urgent task, but must carried out with great care on environmental compatibility and protection. Renewable energy supply systems that are suitable for grid-bound heat supply, particularly in urban areas in Europe, are geothermal binary plants that provide power as well as power and heat. This paper will present studies whose objective was the assessment of hydrogeothermal power and heat generation in low-enthalpy regions from the environmental standpoint. The German Environment Agency published results of a network of studies conducted between 2008 and 2016 on the analysis of detailed and comprehensive environmental impacts of the geothermal energy generation in Germany and has continuously evaluated these findings. In this article, the results of the Life Cycle Assessment are discussed, taking into account all effects and material flows within the entire life cycle. Based on these balances, differing geothermal systems are compared to each other and to other renewable and fossil energy generation systems in order to assess the ecological advantages and disadvantages of these systems. Taking into account local environmental impacts as well a comprehensive ecologic evaluation of potential environmental and human health impacts becomes possible. The paper presents the results of a) the mass and energy fluxes of the process chain along the life cycle, and b) the local environmental impacts along the life cycle with regard to the environmental indicators of these cases. The focus is on the impact of site and plant parameters. Concluding, it can be summarised that geothermal power and heat generation is a very low-carbon technology and can contribute to a sustainable energy supply. Hydrogeothermal plants show a significantly low surface consumption, and environmental impacts are only locally relevant and technically controllable. Through the development of optimised overall concepts, geothermal based power and heat generation can achieve minimal environmental impacts in all areas. The combined heat and power generation from geothermal resources is by far the most environmentally and climate-friendly energy supply compared to all other regenerative and fossil systems. Woody biomass energy makes up a large share of renewable energy consumption in the EU, and the largest share in countries like Denmark. However, little is known about how the public perceive it. This paper presents the results of a questionnaire-based survey of the public in Denmark focusing on attitudes toward woody biomass for energy. The main findings are that, while more people favor than oppose it, a large proportion are undecided about the use of woody biomass. The survey also revealed a lack of knowledge about this energy source. A Best-Worst Scaling methodology revealed that Danes prioritize environmental sustainability concerns – namely biodiversity loss, the hindering of the development of other renewable energy sources and the climate change mitigation potential of woody biomass – over societal and/or economic ones when it comes to the promotion of woody biomass. Finally, it was found that concern about climate change, belief in the mitigation potential of woody biomass, and being younger explained the formation of positive attitudes toward woody biomass. Policy makers aiming to take public concerns into account in discussions about Denmark's energy future should focus more on minimizing the negative environmental impacts associated with woody biomass rather than on its economic benefits. This paper proposes the first application of a split-range control technique on a concentrating solar collector to improve an absorption plant production. Solar absorption plants have solar power availability in phase with cooling demand under design conditions. Thus, it is a powerful cooling technology in the context of renewable energy and energy efficiency. These plants need control systems to cope with solar irradiance intermittency, reject irradiation disturbances, manage fossil fuels backup systems and dump closed-loop thermal-hydraulic oscillations. In this work, control techniques are proposed and simulated in an absorption plant in Spain. The plant consists of a concentrating Fresnel solar collector connected to an absorption chiller. The objectives are to operate with 100% renewable solar energy and avoid safety defocus events while reducing temperature oscillations and control actuators effort. Firstly, the current available plant controllers are defined, then two modifications are proposed. The first modification is a split-range controller capable of manipulating both flow and defocus of the Fresnel collector, the second modification is a PI controller to substitute the original chiller on-off controller. The results compare, through validated models, the different control systems and indicate that using both proposed controllers reduces 94% of the sum of actuators effort and 43% of the integral of absolute set-point tracking error compared to the plant's factory pre-set controllers. The suggested controllers increase 66% of energy production and 63% of exergy production. Besides, the split-range technique can be extended to any concentrating solar collector control. An important methodological point that has been over-looked by most of the literature is that renewable energy consumption (REC) is not only correlated in time but also in space. The omission of relevant spatial interaction terms in econometric analysis could be a methodological issue of major importance as it could lead to biased and inefficient estimates. This study accounts for spatial interaction effects to investigate the determinants of REC using a balanced panel of 41 countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) over the period 2002 to 2015. The paper computes the Spatial Moran's I value to explore the spatial agglomeration phenomenon. Then, the Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) is applied to investigate the determinants of REC. The result from the Moran's I value indicates positive spatial correlation between REC and the spatial spill-over effect, representing spatial agglomeration. The decomposition of the SDM Model reveals that the direct effect of Gross Domestic Product per capita is negative while the direct effect of quality of governance level is positive. Green hydrogen is widely recognized as one of the most promising new renewable energy sources that can replace traditional fossil fuels. At the same time, the photocatalytic decomposition of water to produce hydrogen is also considered a renewable and sustainable process of converting solar energy into chemical energy. Herein, in this paper, a high-performance MoP/SiC composite photocatalyst was synthesized by a facile low-temperature hydrothermal method. Notably, we used a solid-state low-temperature phosphating method to prepare MoP with amorphous properties and quantum dot size (2–3 nm) as a photocatalytic hydrogen production co-catalyst, which affords an effective way of alternating precious metal co-catalysts. The results of H 2 production studies display that amorphous MoP quantum dots can dramatically strengthen the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance of SiC. Especially, as the loading of MoP is up to 2.5%, it has the optimal hydrogen production performance, the hydrogen production rate is so high that it reaches 589.23 μmol h−1 g−1 with a quantum yield (QY 400–700 nm) 27.66%, which is 25 folds compared with that of pure SiC. The brilliant co-catalytic behaviour of the amorphous MoP quantum dots is ascribed to their unique amorphous structure and ultra-small particle size, which substantially enhances the photogenerated charge separation efficiency of the main catalyst SiC, as well as reveals plenty of hydrogen-producing active sites, which further facilitates the reaction over the catalyst surface. Automotive technology is currently on the verge of transitioning to electric vehicles, and both the impact of these vehicles on electricity consumption and their environmental performance are the focus of significant interest. In this paper, the emission impacts based on the use of electric vehicles are analyzed using the Well-to-Wheel methodology. In order to evaluate electric vehicle emissions, emissions based on electricity generation and consumption are first determined. Emission intensities are found in gCO 2 e/kWh for electricity consumption and gCO 2 e/km for battery electric vehicles. Well-to-wheel emissions are found 172.2 and 89.1 gCO 2 e/km for conventional and electric vehicles, respectively. With the renewable penetration in electricity generation, the emission intensity will be lower, which means that the emissions of electric vehicles will be further reduced. Thus, a renewable energy supported charging station is simulated and it is shown that emission intensities can be reduced by 60 %. It is concluded that Türkiye should focus primarily on renewable energy sources and then nuclear energy in order to meet the increasing electricity demand and reduce emission intensities. This paper presents a robust technique to evaluate utilization-oriented renewable energy systems (RESs) for sustainable development in Industry 4.0. This goal is accomplished by incorporating circular intuitionistic fuzzy sets (CIFS) into the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). The concept of CIFS efficiently expresses decision makers (DMs) preference in the MCDM process with degrees of membership (DM), degrees of non-membership (NDM), and a parameter radius r that represents the degree of information uncertainty. Firstly, weights are allocated to these criteria through an improved entropy based step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA) method. Secondly, the combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) technique is modified to match CIFS requirements to complete the ranking of the available solutions. Thirdly, the robustness of the approach is evaluated by the execution of a sensitivity study, which demonstrates the technique's consistency in the face of shifting circumstances. The study develops a robust three-way MCDM framework namely Entropy-SWARA-COCoSo that include evaluation criteria and prospective sources of RESs. The usefulness of this technique in making complex decisions on sustainable energy in the face of unpredictability is further proven by a comparative study that demonstrates how it outperforms other MCDM methods that are already in practice. The European Union targets for 27% renewable energy share by 2030. At the same time, all new buildings should be nearly zero energy buildings from 2020 onwards. A major obstacle to these objectives is a combination of current economic stagnation and limited investors' confidence, which leads to low investment proportion. Despite many renewable energy technologies are already at a competitive level, the implementation rate in buildings is still low. In this paper, we focus on advances in efficient mechanisms to overcome non-technical barriers to the increase of renewable energy applications in buildings, such as Energy Performance Contracting (EPC). Tertiary sector holds a huge untapped potential for such applications, especially in Southern Europe. The Trust-EPC-South European initiative, implemented in six southern EU countries with a mix of beginner and intermediate energy service markets, aims at encouraging the financing of sustainable energy solutions in the tertiary sector, by creating a framework for standardization, assessment and benchmarking, thus improving trust and confidence in the financing parties. This paper presents three case studies in Greece, a Mediterranean family resort hotel, a resort and spa hotel and an office building. The installation of renewable energy measures, including photovoltaic systems, solar thermal systems and heat pumps, was examined and their EPC potential was rated, by using the described standardization and benchmarking methodology. Their economic savings range from 3 to 23% on yearly energy costs, at a discounted payback of 3–6 years, depending on the measure. A sensitivity analysis shows the impact of the variation of technical and economic parameters on the EPC projects feasibility. The standardization practice applied is expected to support the project actors in securing appropriate financing and eventually proceed with the renewable energy installations through the EPC. The main objective of this paper is to analyze and propose the United Arab Emirates (UAE) plan of Renewable Energy mix in 2030 to achieve the government target of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of CO 2 while maintaining the electricity price to a minimum. The study includes many proposals of the energy mix for electricity to achieve the target, and a comparison study to IRENA's proposal to select the most suitable energy mix plan in terms of CO 2 reduction while maintaining the electricity price. The analysis has been conducted in two different cases: the first case analyzed where the government of UAE does not implement CO 2 taxation of hydrocarbon fuels used to generate electricity; however, the second case analyzed if the government apply CO 2 taxations what would the results be. Further on, calculations of the surplus energy were implemented for future studies on utilization of the excess energy or reducing the power capacity. This paper utilizes data from 26 countries to document the relationship between renewable energy consumption, shadow banking, traditional banking, and economic growth covering 2010–2021. Employing panel quantile approaches, the results indicate a negative and significant impact of renewable energy consumption on economic growth, highlighting the initial high costs inherent in transitioning to renewable energy sources. Moreover, the findings reveal that shadow banking, along with traditional banking, tends to weaken the negative impacts of renewable energy consumption on economic growth, particularly in countries with medium and high levels of economic development. Finally, panel causality tests confirm bidirectional causality between economic growth and renewable energy consumption, economic growth and shadow banking, and renewable energy consumption and shadow banking. Energy complementarity is a promising approach in the realm of renewable energy systems, enabling the integration of multiple energy sources to achieve a stable and sustainable power supply. This paper presents a comprehensive solar-wind complementarity study encompassing all regions of Morocco. A novel method for assessing complementarity is introduced, utilizing a fluctuation approach that classifies the power output of each source based on the median and the standard deviation. The classifications of both solar and wind sources are then combined to establish a basis for complementary classification, categorizing each day as complementary, non-complementary, low-complementary, or concurrent for both sources. An innovative complementarity index is proposed, ranging from 0 to 1, with values closer to 1 indicating high complementarity. This index is applicable to any location and is used to generate maps illustrating solar-wind complementarity. Additionally, dominance metric is derived from this approach that indicates which source is most likely to complement the other source. The results reveal that temporal complementarity is high in the internal Northern regions reaching indices above 0.7, followed by the Northern coastal regions with indices that range between 0.6 and 0.7. The lowest complementarity occurs in the South with indices below 0.6. Additionally, the complementarity plots that displays the monthly indices reveled, for most regions, that complementarity maintains certain level except in the summer where it peaks or drops. The solar dominance is higher in the South reaching above 60 %, even though the wind potential is important in those regions. For spatial complementarity, two locations were considered and the method is applied for four scenarios: solar-wind, wind-solar, solar-solar and wind-wind. Results favor all the combinations except for the solar-solar scenario. The suggested index yields similar results to Kendall's tau correlation. The negative correlation index indicates high complementarity when positive and a low complementarity when close to −1. For this approach, it is not limited to the degree complementarity but can describe other states of complementarity and its frequency of occurrence compared to other states. This provides additional insights compared to the commonly used correlation methods. The proposed method contributes to a more profound understanding of complementarity between two energy sources.
