In the post-pandemic era, outdoor jogging has become an increasingly popular form of exercise due to the growing emphasis on health. It is essential to comprehensively analyze the factors influencing the spatial distribution of outdoor jogging activities and to propose planning strategies with practical guidance. Using multi-source geospatial big data and multiple models, this study constructs a comprehensive analytical framework to examine the association between environmental variables and the frequency of outdoor jogging activities in Guangzhou. Firstly, outdoor jogging trajectory data were collected from a fitness app, and potential influencing factors were selected based on multi-source big data from the perspectives of the built environment, street perception, and natural environment. For example, using the street-view imagery, objective environmental elements such as greenery and subjective elements such as safety perception were extracted from a human-centric perspective. Secondly, the framework included three models: a backward stepwise regression, an optimal parameters-based geographical detector, and a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model. These models served, to screen significant variables, identify the synergistic effects among the variables, and quantify the spatial heterogeneity of the effects, respectively. Finally, the study area was clustered based on the results of the GWR model to propose urban planning strategies with clear spatial positions and practical significance. The results indicated the following: (1) Factors related to the built environment and street perception significantly influence jogging frequency distribution. (2) Public sports facilities, the level of greenery, and safety perception were identified as key factors influencing jogging activities, representing the three aspects of service facilities, objective perception, and subjective perception, respectively. (3) Specifically, the influence of each factor on jogging activities displayed significant spatial variation. For instance, sports facilities and greenery level were positively correlated with jogging frequency in the city center. (4) Lastly, the study area was divided into four clusters, each representing different local associative characteristics between variables and jogging activities. With the development of satellite technology, the importance of multi-temporal remote sensing (RS) image change detection (CD) in urban planning, environmental monitoring, and other fields is increasingly prominent. Deep learning techniques enable a profound exploration of the intrinsic features within hyperspectral (HS) data, leading to substantial enhancements in CD accuracy while addressing several challenges posed by traditional methodologies. However, existing convolutional neural network (CNN)-based CD approaches frequently encounter issues during the feature extraction process, such as the loss of detailed information due to downsampling, which hampers a model's ability to accurately capture complex spectral features. Additionally, these methods often neglect the integration of multi-scale information, resulting in suboptimal local feature extraction and, consequently, diminished model performance. To address these limitations, we propose a multi-scale fusion network (MsFNet) which leverages dynamic spectral features for effective multi-temporal HS-CD. Our approach incorporates a dynamic convolution module with spectral attention, which adaptively modulates the receptive field size according to the spectral characteristics of different bands. This flexibility enhances the model's capacity to focus on critical bands, thereby improving its ability to identify and differentiate changes across spectral dimensions. Furthermore, we develop a multi-scale feature fusion module which extracts and integrates features from deep feature maps, enriching local information and augmenting the model's sensitivity to local variations. Experimental evaluations conducted on three real-world HS-CD datasets demonstrate that the proposed MsFNet significantly outperforms contemporary advanced CD methods in terms of both efficacy and performance. In this study, we tackle the task of road segmentation from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery, which is vital for remote sensing applications including urban planning and disaster management. Despite its significance, SAR-based road segmentation is hindered by the scarcity of high-resolution, annotated SAR datasets and the distinct characteristics of SAR imagery, which differ significantly from more commonly used electro-optical (EO) imagery. To overcome these challenges, we introduce a multi-source data approach, creating the HybridSAR Road Dataset (HSRD). This dataset includes the SpaceNet 6 Road (SN6R) dataset, derived from high-resolution SAR images and OSM road data, as well as the DG-SAR and SN3-SAR datasets, synthesized from existing EO datasets. We adapt an off-the-shelf road segmentation network from the optical to the SAR domain through an enhanced training framework that integrates both real and synthetic data. Our results demonstrate that the HybridSAR Road Dataset and the adapted network significantly enhance the accuracy and robustness of SAR road segmentation, paving the way for future advancements in remote sensing. Urban areas in sub-Saharan Africa are facing significant developmental challenges due to rapid population growth and urban expansion, this study aims to predict urban growth and assess the SDG 11.3.1 indicator in the Chambishi multi-facility economic zone (CFEMZ) in Zambia through the integration of remote sensing data and spatial cooperative simulation so as to realize sustainable development goals (SDGs). The study utilized DMSP-OLS and VIIRS nighttime light data between 2000 and 2020 to extract the urban built-up area by applying the Pseudo-Invariant Features (PIFs) method to determine thresholds. The land-use and population changes under several development scenarios in 2030 were simulated in the study using the Spatial Cooperative Simulation (SCS) approach. The changes in SDG 11.3.1 indicators were also calculated in the form of a spatialized kilometer grid. The findings show a substantial rise in the built-up area and especially indicate a most notable increase in Chambishi. The primary cause of this growth is the development of industrial parks, which act as the region's principal engine for urban expansion. Under the natural scenario, the land-use distribution in the study area presents an unplanned state that will make it difficult to realize SDGs. The results of the spatialization form of the SDG 11.3.1 indicator demonstrate the areas and problems of imbalance between urban construction and population growth in the CMFEZ. Analyzing the impacts of urban landscape patterns on the thermal environment has become one of the key research areas in addressing urban heat islands (UHIs) and improving the living environment. A case study was carried out in Fuzhou, Fujian Province of China, and bi-temporal Landsat imagery was selected to calculate land surface temperature (LST), percent impervious surface area (ISA), and fractional vegetation cover (FVC). The urban area was further divided into three concentric urban zones, ranging from the city center to the urban periphery, based on urban development densities. The spatial pattern of LST and its variance were analyzed and compared between different zones and different dates. The thermal environment contribution of different zones was also quantified to indicate the change in urban landscape patterns resulting from urban expansion in different zones. Furthermore, Geodetector was used to explore the single factors and interaction factors controlling the spatial patterns of LST in each zone. The results showed that (i) urban expansion primarily increased in Zone 2 and Zone 3, and the areal proportion of high and sub-high LST areas increased from 56.11% and 21.08% to 62.03% and 32.49% in Zone 2 and Zone 3, respectively, from 2004 to 2021; (ii) the heat effect contribution of Zones 2 and 3 reached from 75.16% in 2004 to 89.40% in 2021, indicating that the increase in ISA with >LSTmean was more pronounced in Zone 3 and Zone 2 during the period; (iii) the driving factors of LST spatial distribution were regionally different because of the different landscape patterns, and the explanatory power for the heterogeneity of LST in Zone 1 was weaker than in Zone 2 and Zone 3 in the study area; (iv) the interaction of different factors had a higher explanatory power in the spatial distribution of LST than a single factor in each zone because the distributions of land cover types are heterogeneous in urban areas. Recent advancements in satellite technology have significantly increased the availability of high-resolution imagery for Earth observation, enabling nearly all regions to be captured frequently throughout the year. These images have become a vast source of big data and hold immense potential for various applications, including environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management. However, obtaining ground control points (GCPs) and performing geometric correction is a time-consuming and costly process, often limiting the efficient use of these images. To address this challenge, this study introduces a Rational Function Model (RFM)-based rigorous bundle adjustment method to enhance the relative geometric positioning accuracy of multiple KOMPSAT-3A images without the need for GCPs. The proposed method was tested using KOMPSAT-3A images. The results showed a significant improvement in geometric accuracy, with mean positional errors reduced from 30.02 pixels to 2.21 pixels. Investigating urban vitality and comprehending the influence mechanisms of the built environment is essential for achieving sustainable urban growth and improving the quality of life for residents. Current research has rarely addressed the nonlinear relationships and synergistic effects between urban vitality and the built environment at the neighborhood scale. This oversight may overlook the influence of key neighborhoods and overestimate or underestimate the influence of different factors on urban vitality. Using Guangzhou's central urban area as a case study, this research develops a comprehensive urban vitality assessment system that includes economic, social, cultural, and ecological dimensions, utilizing multi-source data such as POI, Dazhong Dianping, Baidu heatmap, and NDVI. Additionally, the XGBoost-SHAP model is applied to uncover the nonlinear impacts of different built environment factors on neighborhood vitality. The findings reveal that: (1) urban vitality diminishes progressively from the center to the periphery; (2) proximity to Zhujiang New Town is the most critical factor for neighborhood vitality (with a contribution of 0.039), while functional diversity and public facility accessibility are also significant (with contributions ranging from 0.033 to 0.009); (3) built environment factors exert nonlinear influences on neighborhood vitality, notably with a threshold effect for subway station accessibility (feature value of 0.1); (4) there are notable synergistic effects among different built environment dimensions. For example, neighborhoods close to Zhujiang New Town (feature value below 0.12) with high POI density (feature value above 0.04) experience significant positive synergistic effects. Regular detection of land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes with high accuracy is necessary for natural resources management and sustainable urban planning. The produced LULC maps from Google Earth Engine (GEE) also illustrate the transformation of the LULC for the respective landscape over time. The selected study area, Cottbus City and the Spree-Neisse district in northeastern Germany, has undergone significant development over the past decades due to various factors, including urbanization and industrialization; also, the landscape has been converted in some areas for post-mining activities. Detection of LULC changes that have taken place over the last few decades thus plays a vital role in quantifying the impact of these factors while improving the knowledge of these developments and supporting the city planners or urban management officials before implementing further long-term development initiatives for the future. Therefore, the study aims to (i) detect LULC changes for the time slices 2002 and 2022, testing machine learning (ML) algorithms in supervised and unsupervised classification for Landsat satellite imageries, and (ii) validate the newly produced LULC maps with the available regional database (RDB) from the federal and state statistical offices, Germany, and the Dynamic World (DW) near real-time 10 m global LULC data set powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The results of the Random Forest (RF) and the Smilecart classifiers of supervised classification using Landsat 9 OLI-2/TIRS-2 in 2022 demonstrated a validation accuracy of 88% for both, with Kappa Index (KI) of 83% and 84%, respectively. Moreover, the Training Overall Accuracy (TOA) was 100% for both years. The wekaKMeans cluster of the unsupervised classification also illustrated a similar transformation pattern in the LULC maps. Overall, the produced LULC maps offered an improved representation of the selected region's various land-cover classes (i.e., vegetation, waterbodies, built areas, and bare ground) in the last two decades (20022 to 2022). Solar radiation impacts diverse aspects of city life, such as harvesting energy with PV panels, passive heating of buildings in winter, cooling the loads of air-conditioning systems in summer, and the urban microclimate. Urban digital twins and 3D city models can support solar studies in the process of urban planning and provide valuable insights for data-driven decision support. This study examines the calculation of solar incident radiation at the city scale in Sofia using remote sensing data for the large shading context in a mountainous region and 3D building data. It aims to explore the methods of geometry optimisation, limitations, and performance issues of a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) tool dedicated to small-scale solar analysis and employed at the city scale. Two cases were considered at the city and district scales, respectively. The total face count of meshes for the simulations constituted approximately 2,000,000 faces. A total of 64,379 roofs for the whole city and 4796 buildings for one district were selected. All calculations were performed in one batch and visualised in a 3D web platform. The use of a 3D CAD environment establishes a seamless process of updating 3D models and simulations, while preprocessing in Geographic Information System (GIS) ensures working with large-scale datasets. With rapid urbanization, retrieving information about residential complexes in a timely manner is essential for urban planning. To develop efficiency and accuracy of building extraction in residential complexes, a Segment Anything Model-based residential building instance segmentation method with an automated prompt generator was proposed combining LiDAR data and VHR remote sensing images in this study. Three key steps are included in this method: approximate footprint detection using LiDAR data, automatic prompt generation for the SAM, and residential building footprint extraction. By applying this method, residential building footprints were extracted in Pukou District, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. Based on this, a comprehensive assessment model was constructed to systematically evaluate the spatial layout of urban complexes using six dimensions of assessment indicators. The results showed the following: (1) The proposed method was used to effectively extract residential building footprints. (2) The residential complexes in the study area were classified into four levels. The numbers of complexes classified as Excellent, Good, Average, and Poor were 10, 29, 16, and 1, respectively. Residential complexes of different levels exhibited varying spatial layouts and building distributions. The results provide a visual representation of the spatial distribution of residential complexes that belong to different levels within the study area, aiding in urban planning. The accumulation of artificially built environment stock during urbanization processes has been actively involved in altering the material and energy use pattern of human societies. Therefore, an accurate assessment of built environment stock can provide insights for decision makers to implement appropriate environmentally sustainable retrofitting strategies. This study presents a building stock estimation enhancement framework (BSEEF) that leverages nighttime light (NTL) to accurately assess and spatially map building stocks. By innovatively integrating a region classification module with a hybrid region-specified self-optimization module, BSEEF adaptively enhances the estimation accuracy across diverse urban landscapes. A comparative case study of Japan demonstrated that BSEEF significantly outperformed a traditional linear regression model, with improvements ranging from 1.81% to 16.75% across different metrics used for assessment, providing more accurate building stock estimates. BSEEF enhances environment/sustainability studies by enabling precise spatial analysis of built environment stocks, offering a versatile and robust framework that adapts to technological changes and achieves superior accuracy without extensive reliance on complex datasets. Knowledge of hazard conditions due to mass movements is one of the non-structural measures for risk management, urban planning, and protection of natural resources. To obtain this type of mapping, a spatial construction was started by correlating the historical movements with the inherent variables of the terrain by means of the bivariate statistical method, which assigns densities or weights of evidence to estimate the degree of susceptibility. This model was combined with the triggering factors (rainfall and earthquake) to determine the spatiotemporal conditions (hazard). From this procedure, it was obtained that the susceptibility model presents 34% (32.33 km2) of the total area in the high and very high categories, especially in the regions of Mount Siradella and Mount Faro. The validation of the present model obtained a value of 0.945 with the ROC curve. For the hazard condition, 34.1% (32.06 km2) of the study area was found to be in the high and very high category, especially in the municipalities of El Grove, Sanxenxo, and A Illa de Arousa, which have the greatest extension. The present evaluation is an advance in the knowledge of the risk and the actions that can be derived, as in turn, this type of study is an easy tool to obtain due to its low cost and information processing. Due to ever-accelerating urbanization in recent decades, exploring the contributions of trees in mitigating atmospheric carbon in urban areas has become one of the paramount concerns. Remote sensing-based approaches have been primarily implemented to estimate the tree-stand atmospheric carbon stock (CS) for the trees in parks and streets. However, a convenient yet high-accuracy computation methodology is hardly available. This study introduces an approach that has been tested for a small urban area. A data fusion approach based on a three-dimensional (3D) computation methodology was applied to calibrate the individual tree CS. This photogrammetry-based technique employed an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and spherical image data to compute the total height (H) and diameter at breast height (DBH) for each tree, consequently estimating the tree-stand CS. A regression analysis was conducted to compare the results with the ones obtained with high-cost laser scanner data. Our study demonstrates the applicability of this method, highlighting its advantages even for large city areas in contrast to other approaches that are often more expensive. This approach could serve as an efficient tool for assisting urban planners in ensuring the proper utilization of the available green space, especially in a complex urban environment. Building land-use type classification using earth observation data is essential for urban planning and emergency management. Municipalities usually do not hold a detailed record of building land-use types in their jurisdictions, and there is a significant need for a detailed classification of this data. Earth observation data can be beneficial in this regard, because of their availability and requiring a reduced amount of fieldwork. In this work, we imported Google Street View (GSV), light detection and ranging-derived (LiDAR-derived) features, and orthophoto images to deep learning (DL) models. The DL models were trained on building land-use type data for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The data was created using building land-use type labels from OpenStreetMap (OSM) and web scraping. Then, we classified buildings into apartment, house, industrial, institutional, mixed residential/commercial, office building, retail, and other. Three DL-derived classification maps from GSV, LiDAR, and orthophoto images were combined at the decision level using the proposed ranking classes based on the F1 score method. For comparison, the classifiers were combined using fuzzy fusion as well. The results of two independent case studies, Vancouver and Fort Worth, showed that the proposed fusion method could achieve an overall accuracy of 75%, up to 8% higher than the previous study using CNNs and the same ground truth data. Also, the results showed that while mixed residential/commercial buildings were correctly detected using GSV images, the DL models confused many houses in the GTA with mixed residential/commercial because of their similar appearance in GSV images. Urban planning has, in recent years, been significantly assisted by remote sensing data. The data and techniques that are used are very diverse and are available to government agencies as well as to private companies that are involved in planning urban and peri-urban areas. Synthetic aperture radar data are particularly important since they provide information on the geometric and electrical characteristics of ground objects and, at the same time, are unaffected by sunlight (day–night) and cloud cover. SAR data are usually combined with optical data (fusion) in order to increase the reliability of the terrain information. Most of the existing relative classification methods have been reviewed. New techniques that have been developed use decorrelation and interferometry to record changes on the Earth's surface. Texture-based features, such as Markov random fields and co-occurrence matrices, are employed, among others, for terrain classification. Furthermore, target geometrical features are used for the same purpose. Among the innovative works presented in this manuscript are those dealing with tomographic SAR imaging for creating digital elevation models in urban areas. Finally, tomographic techniques and digital elevation models can render three-dimensional representations for a much better understanding of the urban region. The above-mentioned sources of information are integrated into geographic information systems, making them more intelligent. In this work, most of the previous techniques and methods are reviewed, and selected papers are highlighted in order for the reader-researcher to have a complete picture of the use of SAR in urban planning. For accurate urban planning, three-dimensional (3D) building models with a high level of detail (LOD) must be developed. However, most large-scale 3D building models are limited to a low LOD of 1–2, as the creation of higher LOD models requires the modeling of detailed building elements such as walls, windows, doors, and roof shapes. This process is currently not automated and is performed manually. In this study, an end-to-end framework for the creation of 3D building models was proposed by integrating multi-source data such as omnidirectional images, building footprints, and aerial photographs. These different data sources were matched with the building ID considering their spatial location. The building element information related to the exterior of the building was extracted, and detailed LOD3 3D building models were created. Experiments were conducted using data from Kobe, Japan, yielding a high accuracy for the intermediate processes, such as an 86.9% accuracy in building matching, an 88.3% pixel-based accuracy in the building element extraction, and an 89.7% accuracy in the roof type classification. Eighty-one LOD3 3D building models were created in 8 h, demonstrating that our method can create 3D building models that adequately represent the exterior information of actual buildings. The study of the expansion potential of artificial oases based on remote sensing data is of great significance for the rational allocation of water resources and urban planning in arid areas. Based on the spatio-temporal relationship between morphogenetic landform types and the development of artificial oases in Xinjiang, this study explored the development pattern of artificial oases in the past 30 years by using trend analysis and centroid migration analysis, constructing a series of landform–artificial oasis change indices, and investigating the suitability of different landforms for the development of artificial oases based on geomorphological location by adopting a hierarchical clustering method. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) From 1990 to 2020, the area of artificial oases in the whole territory continued to increase, with significant expansion to the south from 2005 to 2010. (2) Six categories of landform types for artificial oasis development were created based on the clustering results. Of these, 7.39% and 6.15% of the area's geomorphological types belonged to the first and second suitability classes, respectively. (3) The optimal scale for analyzing the suitability of landforms for the development of artificial oases over the past 30 years in the whole area was 8 km, which could explain more than 96% of the changes in the growth of artificial oases. The distribution of landforms of first- and second-class suitability within the 8 km buffer zone of an artificial oasis in the year 2020 was 10.55% and 9.90%, respectively, and landforms of first-class suitability were mainly concentrated in the near plain side of the urban agglomerations located on the northern and southern slopes of the Tianshan Mountains, and the urban agglomerations at the southern edge of Altai Mountains. In this study, we developed a XGBoost-based algorithm to downscale 2 km-resolution land surface temperature (LST) data from the GOES satellite to a finer 70 m resolution, using ancillary variables including NDVI, NDBI, and DEM. This method demonstrated a superior performance over the conventional TsHARP technique, achieving a reduced RMSE of 1.90 °C, compared to 2.51 °C with TsHARP. Our approach utilizes the geostationary GOES satellite data alongside high-resolution ECOSTRESS data, enabling hourly LST downscaling to 70 m—a significant advancement over previous methodologies that typically measure LST only once daily. Applying these high-resolution LST data, we examined the hottest days in Chicago and their correlation with ethnic inequality. Our analysis indicated that Hispanic/Latino communities endure the highest LSTs, with a maximum LST that is 1.5 °C higher in blocks predominantly inhabited by Hispanic/Latino residents compared to those predominantly occupied by White residents. This study highlights the intersection of urban development, ethnic inequality, and environmental inequities, emphasizing the need for targeted urban planning to mitigate these disparities. The enhanced spatial and temporal resolution of our LST data provides deeper insights into diurnal temperature variations, crucial for understanding and addressing the urban heat distribution and its impact on vulnerable communities. Building extraction plays an important role in urban information analysis, which is helpful for urban planning and disaster monitoring. With the improvement of SAR resolution, rich detailed information in urban areas is revealed, but the discretized features also pose challenges for object detection. This paper addresses the problem of individual high-rise building extraction based on single high-resolution SAR image. Different from previous methods that require building facades to be presented in specific appearances, the proposed method is suitable for extraction of various types of high-rise buildings. After analyzing the SAR images of many types of high-rise buildings, we establish a unified high-rise building part model, on the basis of a scattering mechanism of building structures, to describe the facade characteristics of high-rise buildings, including a facade regularity part, facade bright line part, double bounce part, and their spatial topological relationships. A three-level high-rise building extraction framework, named HRBE-PM, is proposed based on the high-rise building part model. At the pixel level, a modified spot filter is used to extract bright spots and bright lines of different scales simultaneously to obtain salient features. At the structure level, building parts are generated based on the salient features according to semantic information. At the object level, spatial topological information between parts is introduced to generate building hypotheses. We define two indicators, completeness and compactness, to comprehensively evaluate each building hypothesis and select the optimal ones. After postprocessing, the final high-rise building extraction results are obtained. Experiments on two TerraSAR-X images show that the high-rise building extraction precision rate of the HRBE-PM method is above 85.29%, the recall rate is above 82.95%, and the F1-score is above 0.87. The results indicate that the HRBE-PM method can accurately extract individual high-rise buildings higher than 24 m in most dense scenes, regardless of building types. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Semantic segmentation of remote sensing images (RSIs) is pivotal for numerous applications in urban planning, agricultural monitoring, and environmental conservation. However, traditional approaches have primarily emphasized learning within the spatial domain, which frequently leads to less than optimal discrimination of features. Considering the inherent spectral qualities of RSIs, it is essential to bolster these representations by incorporating the spectral context in conjunction with spatial information to improve discriminative capacity. In this paper, we introduce the spectral–spatial context-boosted network (SSCBNet), an innovative network designed to enhance the accuracy semantic segmentation in RSIs. SSCBNet integrates synergetic attention (SYA) layers and cross-fusion modules (CFMs) to harness both spectral and spatial information, addressing the intrinsic complexities of urban and natural landscapes within RSIs. Road extraction is a crucial aspect of remote sensing imagery processing that plays a significant role in various remote sensing applications, including automatic driving, urban planning, and path navigation. However, accurate road extraction is a challenging task due to factors such as high road density, building occlusion, and complex traffic environments. In this study, a Spatial Attention Swin Transformer (SASwin Transformer) architecture is proposed to create a robust encoder capable of extracting roads from remote sensing imagery. In this architecture, we have developed a spatial self-attention (SSA) module that captures efficient and rich spatial information through spatial self-attention to reconstruct the feature map. Following this, the module performs residual connections with the input, which helps reduce interference from unrelated regions. Additionally, we designed a Spatial MLP (SMLP) module to aggregate spatial feature information from multiple branches while simultaneously reducing computational complexity. Two public road datasets, the Massachusetts dataset and the DeepGlobe dataset, were used for extensive experiments. The results show that our proposed model has an improved overall performance compared to several state-of-the-art algorithms. Generative models have recently gained popularity in remote sensing, offering substantial benefits for interpreting and utilizing satellite imagery across diverse applications such as climate monitoring, urban planning, and wildfire detection. These models are particularly adept at addressing the challenges posed by satellite images, which often exhibit domain variability due to seasonal changes, sensor characteristics, and, especially, variations in spectral bands. Such variability can significantly impact model performance across various tasks. In response to these challenges, our work introduces an adaptive approach that harnesses the capabilities of generative adversarial networks (GANs), augmented with contrastive learning, to generate target domain images that account for multispectral band variations effectively. By maximizing mutual information between corresponding patches and leveraging the power of GANs, our model aims to generate realistic-looking images across different multispectral domains. Highly accurate data on urban and rural settlement (URS) are essential for urban planning and decision-making in response to climate and environmental changes. This study developed an optimal random forest classification model for URSs based on spectral–topographic–radar polarization features using Landsat 8, NASA DEM, and Sentinel-1 SAR as the remote-sensing data sources. An optimal urban and rural settlement boundary (URSB) extraction technique based on morphological and pixel-level statistical methods was established to link discontinuous URSs and improve the accuracy of URSB extraction. An optimal random forest classification model for URSs was developed, as well as a technique to optimize URSB, using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The URSB of Xining, China, in 2020 was then extracted at a spatial resolution of 30 m, achieving an overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of 96.21% and 0.92, respectively. Compared to using a single spectral feature, these corresponding metrics improved by 16.21% and 0.35, respectively. This research also demonstrated that the newly constructed Blue Roof Index (BRI), with enhanced blue roof features, is highly indicative of URSs and that the URSB was best extracted when the window size of the structural elements was 13 × 13. Building change detection (BCD) plays a vital role in city planning and development, ensuring the timely detection of urban changes near metro lines. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has the advantage of providing continuous image time series with all-weather and all-time capabilities for earth observation compared with optical remote sensors. Deep learning algorithms have extensively been applied for BCD to realize the automatic detection of building changes. However, existing deep learning-based BCD methods with SAR images suffer limited accuracy due to the speckle noise effect and insufficient feature extraction. In this paper, an attention-guided dual-branch fusion network (ADF-Net) is proposed for urban BCD to address this limitation. Specifically, high-resolution SAR images collected by TerraSAR-X have been utilized to detect building changes near metro line 8 in Shanghai with the ADF-Net model. In particular, a dual-branch structure is employed in ADF-Net to extract heterogeneous features from radiometrically calibrated TerraSAR-X images and log ratio images (i.e., difference images (DIs) in dB scale). In addition, the attention-guided cross-layer addition (ACLA) blocks are used to precisely locate the features of changed areas with the transformer-based attention mechanism, and the global attention mechanism with the residual unit (GAM-RU) blocks is introduced to enhance the representation learning capabilities and solve the problems of gradient fading. The effectiveness of ADF-Net is verified using evaluation metrics. The results demonstrate that ADF-Net generates better building change maps than other methods, including U-Net, FC-EF, SNUNet-CD, A2Net, DMINet, USFFCNet, EATDer, and DRPNet. As a result, some building area changes near metro line 8 in Shanghai have been accurately detected by ADF-Net. Semantic segmentation of remote sensing (RS) images is a pivotal branch in the realm of RS image processing, which plays a significant role in urban planning, building extraction, vegetation extraction, etc. With the continuous advancement of remote sensing technology, the spatial resolution of remote sensing images is progressively improving. This escalation in resolution gives rise to challenges like imbalanced class distributions among ground objects in RS images, the significant variations of ground object scales, as well as the presence of redundant information and noise interference. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale context extraction network, ASPP+-LANet, based on the LANet for semantic segmentation of high-resolution RS images. Firstly, we design an ASPP+ module, expanding upon the ASPP module by incorporating an additional feature extraction channel, redesigning the dilation rates, and introducing the Coordinate Attention (CA) mechanism so that it can effectively improve the segmentation performance of ground object targets at different scales. Secondly, we introduce the Funnel ReLU (FReLU) activation function for enhancing the segmentation effect of slender ground object targets and refining the segmentation edges. Extracting buildings in urban scenes from remote sensing images is crucial for the construction of digital cities, urban monitoring, urban planning, and autonomous driving. Traditional methods generally rely on shadow detection or stereo matching from multi-view high-resolution remote sensing images, which is cost-intensive. Recently, machine learning has provided solutions for the estimation of building heights from remote sensing images, but challenges remain due to the limited observation angles and image quality. The inherent lack of information in a single modality greatly limits the extraction precision. This article proposes an advanced method using multi-source remote sensing images for urban building height estimation, which is characterized by multi-level cross-fusion, the multi-task joint learning of footprint extraction and height estimation, and semantic information to refine the height estimation results. The complementary and effective features of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical (EO) images are transferred through multi-level cross-fusion. We use the semantic information of the footprint extraction branch to refine the height estimation results, enhancing the height results from coarse to fine. Finally, We evaluate our model on the SpaceNet 6 dataset and achieve 0.3849 and 0.7231 in the height estimation metric δ 1 and footprint extraction metric D i c e , respectively, which indicate effective improvements in the results compared to other methods. High-spatial-resolution urban buildings play a crucial role in urban planning, emergency response, and disaster management. However, challenges such as missing building contours due to occlusion problems (occlusion between buildings of different heights and buildings obscured by trees), uneven contour extraction due to mixing of building edges with other feature elements (roads, vehicles, and trees), and slow training speed in high-resolution image data hinder efficient and accurate building extraction. To address these issues, we propose a semantic segmentation model composed of a lightweight backbone, coordinate attention module, and pooling fusion module, which achieves lightweight building extraction and adaptive recovery of spatial contours. Comparative experiments were conducted on datasets featuring typical urban building instances in China and the Mapchallenge dataset, comparing our method with several classical and mainstream semantic segmentation algorithms. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, achieving excellent mean intersection over union (mIoU) and frames per second (FPS) scores on both datasets (China dataset: 85.11% and 110.67 FPS; Mapchallenge dataset: 90.27% and 117.68 FPS). Quantitative evaluations indicate that our model not only significantly improves computational speed but also ensures high accuracy in the extraction of urban buildings from high-resolution imagery. Specifically, on a typical urban building dataset from China, our model shows an accuracy improvement of 0.64% and a speed increase of 70.03 FPS compared to the baseline model. On the Mapchallenge dataset, our model achieves an accuracy improvement of 0.54% and a speed increase of 42.39 FPS compared to the baseline model. Our research indicates that lightweight networks show significant potential in urban building extraction tasks. Heterogeneous change detection (CD) is widely applied in various fields such as urban planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster management. It enhances the accuracy and comprehensiveness of surface change monitoring by integrating multi-sensor remote sensing data. Scholars have proposed many graph-based methods to address the issue of incomparable heterogeneous images caused by imaging differences. However, these methods often overlook the influence of changes in vertex status on the graph structure, which limits their ability to represent image structural features. To tackle this problem, this paper presents an unsupervised heterogeneous CD method based on enhanced graph structure representation (EGSR). This method enhances the representation capacity of the graph structure for image structural features by measuring the unchanged probabilities of vertices, thereby making it easier to detect changes in heterogeneous images. Firstly, we construct the graph structure using image superpixels and measure the structural graph differences of heterogeneous images in the same image domain. Then, we calculate the unchanged probability of each vertex in the structural graph and reconstruct the graph structure using this probability. To accurately represent the graph structure, we adopt an iterative framework for enhancing the representation of the graph structure. Finally, at the end of the iteration, the final change map (CM) is obtained by binary segmentation of the graph vertices based on their unchanged probabilities. The timely, accurate acquisition of geographic spatial information such as the location, scope, and distribution of built-up areas is of great importance for urban planning, management, and decision-making. Due to the diversity of target features and the complexity of spatial layouts, the large-scale mapping of urban built-up areas using high-resolution (HR) satellite imagery still faces considerable challenges. To address this issue, this study adopted a block-based processing strategy and constructed a lightweight multilevel feature-fusion (FF) convolutional neural network for the feature representation and discrimination of built-up areas in HR images. The proposed network consists of three feature extraction modules composed of lightweight convolutions to extract features at different levels, which are further fused sequentially through two attention-based FF modules. Furthermore, to improve the problem of incorrect discrimination and severe jagged boundaries caused by block-based processing, a majority voting method based on a grid offset is adopted to achieve a refined extraction of built-up areas. The effectiveness of this method is evaluated using Gaofen-2 satellite image data covering Shenzhen, China. Compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms for detecting built-up areas, the proposed method achieves a higher detection accuracy and preserves better shape integrity and boundary smoothness in the extracted results. Monitoring vegetation health and its response to climate conditions is critical for assessing the impact of climate change on urban environments. While many studies simulate and map the health of vegetation, there seems to be a lack of high-resolution, low-scale data and easy-to-use tools for managers in the municipal administration that they can make use of for decision-making. Data related to climate and vegetation indicators, such as those provided by the C3S Copernicus Data Store (CDS), are mostly available with a coarse resolution but readily available as freely available and open data. This study aims to develop a systematic approach and workflow to provide a simple tool for monitoring vegetation changes and health. We built a toolbox to streamline the geoprocessing workflow. The data derived from CDS included bioclimate indicators such as the annual moisture index and the minimum temperature of the coldest month (BIO06). The biophysical parameters used are leaf area index (LAI) and fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FAPAR). We used a linear regression model to derive equations for downscaled biophysical parameters, applying vegetation indices derived from Sentinel-2, to identify the vegetation health status. We also downscaled the bioclimatic indicators using the digital elevation model (DEM) and Landsat surface temperature derived from Landsat 8 through Bayesian kriging regression. The downscaled indicators serve as a critical input for forest-based classification regression to model climate envelopes to address suitable climate conditions for vegetation growth. The results derived contribute to the overall development of a workflow and tool for and within the CoKLIMAx project to gain and deliver new insights that capture vegetation health by explicitly using data from the CDS with a focus on the City of Constance at Lake Constance in southern Germany. The results shall help gain new insights and improve urban resilient, climate-adaptive planning by providing an intuitive tool for monitoring vegetation health and its response to climate conditions. With the rapid advancement of technology, satellite and drone technologies have had significant impacts on various fields, creating both opportunities and challenges. In areas like the military, urban planning, and environmental monitoring, the application of remote sensing technology is paramount. However, due to the unique characteristics of remote sensing images, such as high resolution, large-scale scenes, and small, densely packed targets, remote sensing object detection faces numerous technical challenges. Traditional detection methods are inadequate for effectively detecting small targets, rendering the accurate and efficient detection of objects in complex remote sensing images a pressing issue. Current detection techniques fall short in accurately detecting small targets compared to medium and large ones, primarily due to limited feature information, insufficient contextual data, and poor localization capabilities for small targets. In response, we propose an innovative detection method. Unlike previous approaches that often focused solely on either local or contextual information, we introduce a novel Global and Local Attention Mechanism (GAL), providing an in-depth modeling method for input images. Our method integrates fine-grained local feature analysis with global contextual information processing. The local attention concentrates on details and spatial relationships within local windows, enabling the model to recognize intricate details in complex images. Meanwhile, the global attention addresses the entire image's global information, capturing overarching patterns and structures, thus enhancing the model's high-level semantic understanding. Ultimately, a specific mechanism fuses local details with global context, allowing the model to consider both aspects for a more precise and comprehensive interpretation of images. Furthermore, we have developed a multi-head prediction module that leverages semantic information at various scales to capture the multi-scale characteristics of remote sensing targets. Adding decoupled prediction heads aims to improve the accuracy and robustness of target detection. Additionally, we have innovatively designed the Ziou loss function, an advanced loss calculation, to enhance the model's precision in small target localization, thereby boosting its overall performance in small target detection. Experimental results on the Visdrone2019 and DOTA datasets demonstrate that our method significantly surpasses traditional methods in detecting small targets in remote sensing imagery. Urban renewal planning and development are vital for enhancing the living quality of city residents. However, such improvement activities are often expensive, time-consuming, and in need of standardization. The convergence of remote sensing technologies, social big data, and artificial intelligence solutions has created unprecedented opportunities for comprehensive digital planning and analysis in urban renewal development and management. However, fast interdisciplinary development imposes some challenges because the data collected and the solutions built are defined piece by piece and require further fusion and integration of knowledge, evaluation standards, systematic analyses, and new methodologies. To address these challenges, we propose a municipal and urban renewal development index (MUDI) system with data modeling and mathematical analysis models. The MUDI system is applied and studied in three circumstances: (1) at regional level, 337 cities are selected in China to demonstrate the MUDI system's comparable analysis capabilities on a large scale across cities; (2) at city level, 285 residential communities are selected in Xiamen to demonstrate the use of remote sensing data as key MUDIs for a temporal urban land change analysis; and (3) at the level of residential neighborhoods' urban renewal practices, Xiamen's Yingping District is selected to demonstrate the MUDI system's project management capabilities. We find that the MUDI system is highly effective in municipal and urban data model building through the abstraction and summation of grid-based satellite and social big data. Secondly, the MUDI system enables comprehension of the high dimensionality and complexity of multisource datasets for municipal and urban renewal development. Thirdly, the system is applied to enable the use of the newly developed UMAP algorithm, a model based on Riemannian geometry and algebraic topology, and the carrying out of a principal component analysis for the key dimensions and an index correlation analysis. Fourthly, various artificial intelligence-driven algorithms can be developed for urban renewal analyses based on the MUDIs. With the development of remote sensing satellite technology for Earth observation, remote sensing stereo images have been used for three-dimensional reconstruction in various fields, such as urban planning and construction. However, remote sensing images often contain noise, occluded regions, untextured areas, and repeated textures, which can lead to reduced accuracy in stereo matching and affect the quality of 3D reconstruction results. To reduce the impact of complex scenes in remote sensing images on stereo matching and to ensure both speed and accuracy, we propose a new end-to-end stereo matching network based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The proposed stereo matching network can learn features at different scales from the original images and construct cost volumes with varying scales to obtain richer scale information. Additionally, when constructing the cost volume, we introduce negative disparity to adapt to the common occurrence of both negative and non-negative disparities in remote sensing stereo image pairs. For cost aggregation, we employ a 3D convolution-based encoder–decoder structure that allows the network to adaptively aggregate information. Before feature aggregation, we also introduce an attention module to retain more valuable feature information, enhance feature representation, and obtain a higher-quality disparity map. By training on the publicly available US3D dataset, we obtain an accuracy of 1.115 pixels in end-point error (EPE) and 5.32% in the error pixel ratio (D1) on the test dataset, and the inference speed is 92 ms. Comparing our model with existing state-of-the-art models, we achieve higher accuracy, and the network is beneficial for the three-dimensional reconstruction of remote sensing images. Urban Functional Zones (UFZs) serve as the fundamental units of cities, making the classification and recognition of UFZs of paramount importance for urban planning and development. These differences between UFZs not only encompass geographical landscape disparities but also incorporate socio-economic information. Therefore, it is essential to extract high-precision two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Urban Morphological Parameters (UMPs) and integrate socio-economic data for UFZ classification. In this study, we conducted UFZ classification using airborne LiDAR point clouds, aerial images, and point-of-interest (POI) data. Initially, we fused LiDAR and image data to obtain high-precision land cover distributions, building height models, and canopy height models, which served as accurate data sources for extracting 2D and 3D UMPs. Subsequently, we segmented city blocks based on road network data and extracted 2D UMPs, 3D UMPs, and POI Kernel Density Features (KDFs) for each city block. We designed six classification experiments based on features from single and multiple data sources. K-Nearest Neighbors (KNNs), random forest (RF), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) were employed to classify UFZs. Furthermore, to address the potential data redundancy stemming from numerous input features, we implemented a feature optimization experiment. The results indicate that the experiment, which combined POI KDFs and 2D and 3D UMPs, achieved the highest classification accuracy. Three classifiers consistently exhibited superior performance, manifesting a substantial improvement in the best Overall Accuracy (OA) that ranged between 8.31% and 17.1% when compared to experiments that relied on single data sources. Among these, XGBoost outperformed the others with an OA of 84.56% and a kappa coefficient of 0.82. By conducting feature optimization on all 107 input features, the classification accuracy of all three classifiers exceeded 80%. Specifically, the OA for KNN improved by 10.46%. XGBoost maintained its leading performance, achieving an OA of 86.22% and a kappa coefficient of 0.84. An analysis of the variable importance proportion of 24 optimized features revealed the following order: 2D UMPs (46.46%) > 3D UMPs (32.51%) > POI KDFs (21.04%). This suggests that 2D UMPs contributed the most to classification, while a ranking of feature importance positions 3D UMPs in the lead, followed by 2D UMPs and POI KDFs. This highlights the critical role of 3D UMPs in classification, but it also emphasizes that the socio-economic information reflected by POI KDFs was essential for UFZ classification. Our research outcomes provide valuable insights for the rational planning and development of various UFZs in medium-sized cities, contributing to the overall functionality and quality of life for residents. The increasing proportion of night consumption in the total daily consumption means the night economy has become an indispensable part of national economic development. However, early social science research on alcohol in the night economy and social science research on the night leisure industry dominated our understanding of the night city. Few researchers have built effective mathematical statistical models to explore the spatio-temporal distribution and regional interactions of the night economy. This paper presents a method to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution pattern of the night economy based on multi-source data. Firstly, K-Means++ and DBSCAN were used to cluster OD points to identify the gathering areas of night activities. Then, the local L-function in "flow space" was used to extract the aggregated flow of each aggregation area and analyze the regional interactions. Finally, the correlation between night activity and night service facilities was calculated by using geographic detector, and night activity and lighting were coupled by the profit and loss value. The research shows that this method can identify the main areas of night activity, dig out the interrelationships at the community level, and find the new night activity gathering points and night economic growth areas in the future. This study extends the current situation that the night economy is limited to theoretical research and research in central urban areas, provides the temporal and spatial distribution of night activities and night lighting supplies from the perspective of big data, and provides a basis for future night economy research, urban planning, and relevant policy issuance. Land cover (LC) products play a crucial role in various fields such as change detection, resource management, and urban planning. The diversity in methods and principles used to create different products poses a challenge for researchers in choosing the most suitable one for research needs. Mainstream evaluation methods typically consider only a portion of the accuracy information from the product and require a significant effort in creating validation datasets. Here, we propose a relative accuracy assessment method for LC products based on optimal transport theory, which provides a comprehensive evaluation by utilizing a broader range of accuracy information within the product. The method can directly compute the similarity between the target product and the reference truth at a global scale, addressing the issue of quantitatively assessing product accuracy in the absence of a validation dataset. To validate the effectiveness of the method, we select Beijing as the study area to assess the accuracy of four LC products. The results suggest that the method allows for precise quantification of product accuracy, aligning closely with validation outcomes, which can provide valuable guidance to researchers in both product creation and selection. In urban settings, trees and greenery play a vital role in environmental well-being and community vitality. This study explores the impact of Miami-Dade County's tree-planting initiative on urban greenness and considers the influence of climate dynamics. Using Landsat data from 2006 to 2019, we find stable overall greenness, with 5.64% of the Census blocks exhibiting significant changes. Seasonal analysis reveals winter as prominent, with 61.47% of Census blocks showing increased greenness. Temperature and precipitation, especially post-2010, correlate with greenness changes. Despite a reported increase in tree cover from 14% to 20%, our findings show only 5–6% of Census blocks with statistically significant changes, highlighting the complexity of achieving substantial improvements in green canopy coverage. The study raises questions about the efficacy of large-scale tree-planting initiatives in densely urbanized areas when human factors are not well understood. Rural–urban fringe areas serve as crucial transitional zones within urban structures, and their spatiotemporal evolution holds significant reference value for scientifically planning urban configurations. The existing research predominantly focuses on large cities, overlooking the spatiotemporal evolution mechanisms of small- to medium-sized cities. This study employs nighttime light data as the data source to ensure continuous and consistent data, overcoming administrative boundaries. Taking Taizhou City as a case study, a combination of the threshold method and an improved Mann–Kendall algorithm is employed to reveal the evolution process of fringe areas. And a gravity model is utilized to unearth the interaction relationships among regions. The results indicate that from 2010 to 2020, the urban area expanded from 1097 km2 to 2791 km2, with fringe areas experiencing initial contraction followed by gradual expansion. The central urban areas of Jiaojiang, Luqiao, and Huangyan gradually merged, forming a concentrated region. Linhai maintained a high level of attraction, while spatial gravity weakened in other areas. This study quantitatively analyzes the expansion trends of fringe areas in small- to medium-sized cities, elucidating the attractive effects of time–cost distance and land resources on development and providing valuable support for subsequent spatial planning and governance. We chose Nansha District, the geographical center of the Greater Bay Area, as the study area to analyze its surface subsidence characteristics in recent years. The 20-view Sentinel-1A data and SBAS-InSAR technique were used to monitor the ground subsidence in Nansha from 2017 to 2023. The main rate of ground subsidence in Nansha ranges from −19.4 to 7.7 mm/yr and is distributed in the urban area, along the rivers, in the construction area, and in the reclamation area. As of 4 May 2023, the average ground settlement in Nansha is 10.05 mm and the maximum settlement can be up to 142.45 mm. The 6-year total settlement at all four settlement intensities is greater than 60 mm, with the highest value exceeding 110 mm. The cumulative settlement increases with time, but inverse settlement and no settlement also occur at points where settlement is severe. For settlement caused by soft soil consolidation, it is recommended that drainage pipes be installed to accelerate drainage as a means of stabilizing settlement. For settlement caused by groundwater extraction and additional loads on the road surface, it is recommended to rationally extract groundwater and reinforce the foundation of the road surface with severe settlement. As a significant manifestation of human activities influencing natural environment, rapid urbanization has enhanced economic prosperity while simultaneously posing threats to ecological quality. Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH), the core region of the Yangtze River Delta (CYRD), and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) stand as three major economic centers characterized by the highest level of urbanization in China, encompassing areas of heightened ecological sensitivity. Nevertheless, the ecological quality at the scale of urban agglomerations remains ambiguous, with many studies failing to develop a comprehensive and effective method for comparing diverse urban agglomerations. Consequently, this study integrates multi-source remote sensing data, including information on land cover and other socio-economic parameters, to construct the Ecological Quality Index (EQI) based on the "Function–Interaction–Pressure–Stability" (FIPS) framework. Through a stratified determination of indicator weights grounded in both objective importance and empirical knowledge, we mapped the spatiotemporal changes of EQI and analyzed the impact of urbanization on ecological quality in three urban agglomerations from 2001 to 2020. We determined the following: (1) The calculated EQI can further capture the nuanced details with better performance at both underlining the discrepancy of highs and lows of EQI and describing the spatial detail of urban agglomerations' characteristics. (2) Substantial disparities in EQI and its changes are evident across different urban agglomerations. Notably, only the average EQI improves in PRD, while ecological degradation is prominent in specific regions, such as the southeastern plains of BTH area, along the Yangtze River, and around Shanghai in CYRD and central PRD. The CYRD exhibits the largest affected area. (3) Urbanization predominantly influences ecological quality through land cover transitions. In expansion areas, ecological deterioration is significantly more pronounced, constituting approximately 90% of the total area. (4) Despite significant urbanization, city-level analysis in CYRD reveals a better coordination between urban expansion and ecological protection, with a lower intensity of ecological degradation compared to urban expansion rates. Conversely, some cities in the BTH, despite modest urban expansion, exhibit substantial declines in ecological quality, highlighting the need for targeted policy interventions. Deep learning-based methods for building extraction from remote sensing images have been widely applied in fields such as land management and urban planning. However, extracting buildings from remote sensing images commonly faces challenges due to specific shooting angles. First, there exists a foreground–background imbalance issue, and the model excessively learns features unrelated to buildings, resulting in performance degradation and propagative interference. Second, buildings have complex boundary information, while conventional network architectures fail to capture fine boundaries. In this paper, we designed a multi-task U-shaped network (BFL-Net) to solve these problems. This network enhances the expression of the foreground and boundary features in the prediction results through foreground learning and boundary refinement, respectively. Specifically, the Foreground Mining Module (FMM) utilizes the relationship between buildings and multi-scale scene spaces to explicitly model, extract, and learn foreground features, which can enhance foreground and related contextual features. The Dense Dilated Convolutional Residual Block (DDCResBlock) and the Dual Gate Boundary Refinement Module (DGBRM) individually process the diverted regular stream and boundary stream. The former can effectively expand the receptive field, and the latter utilizes spatial and channel gates to activate boundary features in low-level feature maps, helping the network refine boundaries. The predictions of the network for the building, foreground, and boundary are respectively supervised by ground truth. The experimental results on the WHU Building Aerial Imagery and Massachusetts Buildings Datasets show that the IoU scores of BFL-Net are 91.37% and 74.50%, respectively, surpassing state-of-the-art models. Accurate building extraction holds paramount importance in various applications such as urbanization rate calculations, urban planning, and resource allocation. In response to the escalating demand for precise low-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) building segmentation in intricate scenarios, this study introduces a semi-supervised methodology to alleviate the labor-intensive process of procuring pixel-level annotations. Within the framework of adversarial networks, we employ a dual-channel parallel generator strategy that amalgamates the morphology-driven optical flow estimation channel with an enhanced multilayer sensing Deeplabv3+ module. This approach aims to comprehensively capture both the morphological attributes and textural intricacies of buildings while mitigating the dependency on annotated data. To further enhance the network's capability to discern building features, we introduce an adaptive attention mechanism via a feature fusion module. Additionally, we implement a composite loss function to augment the model's sensitivity to building structures. Across two distinct low-altitude UAV datasets within the domain of UAV-based building segmentation, our proposed method achieves average mean pixel intersection-over-union (mIoU) ratios of 82.69% and 79.37%, respectively, with unlabeled data constituting 70% of the overall dataset. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image change detection aims to detect changes with images of the same area acquired at different times. It has wide applications in environmental monitoring, urban planning and resource management. Traditional change detection methods for spaceborne SAR time-series images typically adopt a pairwise comparison strategy to obtain multi-temporal change information. However, this kind of method has the problem of losing the overall change information, which is time consuming. To address this problem, this paper proposes a new change detection algorithm for spaceborne SAR time-series data based on SAR-SIFT-Logarithm Background Subtraction. This algorithm combines the SAR-SIFT image registration technology with Logarithm Background Subtraction. The method first preprocesses the input time-series data with steps like noise reducing and radiometric calibration. Then, the images will be coregistered by the SAR-SIFT step to avoid mismatches-induced detection performance degradation. Next, the parts that remained unchanged throughout the time period are modeled with a median filter to obtain the static background. The change information is then obtained via the subtraction of background and CFAR detection and clustering. The proposed algorithm is validated using the Sentinel-1 GRD and PAZ-1 time-series dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively detects the overall change information and reduces processing time compared to traditional pairwise comparison methods. Drone imagery has the potential to enrich urban planning and historic preservation, especially where it converges with the growing creation and use of 3D models in the context of cities and metro regions. Nevertheless, the widespread adoption of drones in these fields faces limitations, and there is a shortage of research addressing this issue. Therefore, we have conducted a systematic literature review of articles published between 2002 and 2022 drawing from reputable academic repositories, including Science Direct, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), to identify current gaps in the existing research on the application of UAVs to the creation of 3D models in the contexts of urban planning and historic preservation. Our findings indicate five research shortcomings for 3D city modeling: limited participation of planning experts, research focus imbalance, lack of usage for special scenarios, lack of integration with smart city planning, and limited interdisciplinary collaboration. Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data are increasingly used in various fields such as topographic mapping, urban planning, and emergency management. A necessary processing step in the application of airborne LiDAR data is the elimination of mismatch errors. This paper proposes a new method for airborne LiDAR strip adjustment based on point clouds with planar neighborhoods; this method is intended to eliminate errors in airborne LiDAR point clouds. Initially, standard pre-processing tasks such as denoising, ground separation, and resampling are performed on the airborne LiDAR point clouds. Subsequently, this paper introduces a unique approach to extract point clouds with planar neighborhoods which is designed to enhance the registration accuracy of the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm within the context of airborne LiDAR point clouds. Following the registration of the point clouds using the ICP algorithm, tie points are extracted via a point-to-plane projection method. Finally, a strip adjustment calculation is executed using the extracted tie points, in accordance with the strip adjustment equation for airborne LiDAR point clouds that was derived in this study. Three sets of airborne LiDAR point cloud data were utilized in the experiment outlined in this paper. The results indicate that the proposed strip adjustment method can effectively eliminate mismatch errors in airborne LiDAR point clouds, achieving a registration accuracy and absolute accuracy of 0.05 m. In various regions worldwide, people rely heavily on groundwater as a significant water source for daily usage. The resulting large-scale depletion of groundwater has triggered surface deformation in densely populated urban areas. This paper aims to employ Persistent Scattered Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) techniques to monitor and quantify the land surface deformation (LSD), assess the relationships between LSD and groundwater levels (GWL), and provide insights for urban planning in Lahore, Pakistan, as the research area. A series of Sentinel-1 images from the ascending track between 2017 and 2020 were analyzed. Moreover, the Mann–Kendall (MK) test and coefficient of determination were computed to analyze the long-term trends and spatial relationships between GWL depletion and line of sight (LOS) displacement. Our findings reveal significant increases in land subsidence (LS) and GWL from 2017 to 2020, particularly in the city center of Lahore. Notably, the annual mean subsidence during this period rose from −27 mm/year to −106 mm/year, indicating an accelerating trend with an average subsidence of −20 mm/year. Furthermore, the MK test indicated a declining trend in GWL, averaging 0.49 m/year from 2003 to 2020, exacerbating LS. Regions with significant groundwater discharge are particularly susceptible to subsidence rates up to −100 mm. The LS variation was positively correlated with the GWL at a significant level (p < 0.05) and accounted for a high positive correlation at the center of the city, where the urban load was high. Overall, the adopted methodology effectively detects, maps, and monitors land surfaces vulnerable to subsidence, offering valuable insights into efficient sustainable urban planning, surface infrastructure design, and subsidence-induced hazard mitigation in large urban areas. Due to a lack of geographical reference information, complex panoramic camera models, and intricate distortions, including radiation, geometric, and land cover changes, it can be challenging to effectively apply the large number (800,000+) of high-resolution Corona KH-4B panoramic images from the 1960s and 1970s for surveying-related tasks. This limitation hampers their significant potential in the remote sensing of the environment, urban planning, and other applications. This study proposes a method called 2OC for the automatic and accurate orientation and orthorectification of Corona KH-4B images, which is based on generalized control information from reference images such as Google Earth orthophoto. (1) For the Corona KH-4B panoramic camera, we propose an adaptive focal length variation model that ensures accuracy and consistency. (2) We introduce a robust multi-source remote sensing image matching algorithm, which includes an accurate primary orientation estimation method, a multi-threshold matching enhancement strategy based on scale, orientation, and texture (MTE), and a model-guided matching strategy. These techniques are employed to extract high-accuracy generalized control information for Corona images with significant geometric distortions and numerous weak texture areas. (3) A time-iterative Corona panoramic digital differential correction method is proposed. The orientation and orthorectification results of KH-4B images from multiple regions, including the United States, Russia, Austria, Burkina Faso, Beijing, Chongqing, Gansu, and the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in China, demonstrate that 2OC not only achieves automation but also attains a state-of-the-art level of generality and accuracy. Specifically, the standard deviation of the orientation is less than 2 pixels, the mosaic error of orthorectified images is approximately 1 pixel, and the standard deviation of ground checkpoints is better than 4 m. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), have gained numerous applications due to their low cost, ease of use, vertical takeover and landing, and ability to operate in high-risk or hard-to-reach areas. The contribution of this review is that of building the bridge between drone technology and its application and advancements in the field of Geographic Information System (GIS). The integration of drones and GIS is valuable as it reduces costs and improves accessibility for geospatial data collection. Traditional methods involving aircraft for aerial photography are expensive, requiring the hiring of aircraft, pilots, and photographers. Drones equipped with advanced cameras and artificial intelligence software can replace the conventional technique and at the same time, be economical and time-efficient. The integration of drones and GIS is expected to bring revolutionary benefits in the fields of precision agriculture, urban planning, emergency health response, disaster management, the development of smart cities, food delivery, etc. In this paper, a state-of-the-art review of the deployment of drone-integrated GIS applications in different fields is presented. Various physical characteristics of urban impervious surfaces (ISAs) and urban green spaces (UGSs) collectively regulate environmental temperatures through heating and cooling processes. However, current research often analyzes each regulating factor as an independent variable when examining its relationship with land surface temperature (LST), with limited studies considering the combined contribution weights of all regulating factors. Based on multi-source remote sensing data and ground observations from the near summers of 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018 in the built-up area of Xuzhou City, numerical values and spatial distributions of 15 regulating factors, including ISA density (fi), land surface albedo (Albedo), population density (Population), anthropogenic heat flux (AHF), maximum ISA patch index (LPIISA), natural connectivity of ISA patches (COHESIONISA), aggregation index of ISA patches (AIISA), average shape index of ISA patches (SHAPE_MNISA), UGS density (fv), evapotranspiration (ET), UGS shading index (UGSSI), maximum UGS patch index (LPIUGS), natural connectivity of UGS patches (COHESIONUGS), aggregation index of UGS patches (AIUGS), and average shape index of UGS patches (SHAPE_MNUGS), were separately extracted within the study area. Using geographically weighted regression models and bivariate spatial autocorrelation models, we separately obtained the quantitative and spatial correlations between the 15 regulating factors and LST. The results revealed that all selected regulating factors exhibited high goodness-of-fit and significant spatial correlations with LST, which led to their categorization into eight warming factors and seven cooling factors. The factor detection of the Geographic Detector further reveals the combined contribution of all regulating factors to LST. The results indicate that cooling factors collectively have higher explanatory power for LST compared to warming factors, with UGSSI contributing the most to LST, while Population contributed the least. Furthermore, the interaction detection results of the Geographic Detector have highlighted variations in the explanatory power of different factor combinations on LST. Ultimately, it has identified factor combinations that have proven to be most effective in mitigating the urban heat environment across three scenarios: warming factors alone, cooling factors alone, and a combination of both warming and cooling factors. The suggested factor combinations are as follows: fi ∩ Albedo, fi ∩ LPIISA, UGSSI ∩ fv, UGSSI ∩ LPIUGS, fi ∩ UGSSI, and Albedo ∩ UGSSI. Therefore, our findings hold the potential to provide a valuable reference for urban planning and climate governance. Instance segmentation has been widely applied in building extraction from remote sensing imagery in recent years, and accurate instance segmentation results are crucial for urban planning, construction and management. However, existing methods for building instance segmentation (BSI) still have room for improvement. To achieve better detection accuracy and superior performance, we introduce a Hybrid Task Cascade (HTC)-based building extraction method, which is more tailored to the characteristics of buildings. As opposed to a cascaded improvement that performs the bounding box and mask branch refinement separately, HTC intertwines them in a joint multilevel process. The experimental results also validate its effectiveness. Our approach achieves better detection accuracy compared to mainstream instance segmentation methods on three different building datasets, yielding outcomes that are more in line with the distinctive characteristics of buildings. Furthermore, we evaluate the effectiveness of each module of the HTC for building extraction and analyze the impact of the detection threshold on the model's detection accuracy.
