The convective rainfall rate from cloud physical properties (CRPh) algorithm for Meteosat second-generation satellites is a day-only precipitation algorithm developed at the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) for EUMETSAT’ Satellite Application Facility in support of nowcasting and very short-range forecasting (NWC SAF). It is therefore mainly intended to provide input for monitoring and near-real-time forecasts for a few hours. This letter critically discusses the theoretical basis of the algorithm with special emphasis on the empirical values and assumptions in the microphysics of precipitation, and compares the qualitative performances of the CRPh with its antecessor, the convective rainfall rate algorithm (CRR), using an object-based method applied to a case-study. The analyses show that AEMET’s CRPh is physically consistent and outperforms the CRR. The applicability of the algorithm for nowcasting and the challenges of improving the product to an all-day algorithm are also presented.

The accurate prediction of heavy precipitation in convective environments is crucial because such events, often occurring in Italy during the summer and fall seasons, can be a threat for people and properties. In this paper, we analyse the impact of satellite-derived surface-rainfall-rate data assimilation on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model’s precipitation prediction, considering 15 days in summer 2022 and 17 days in fall 2022, where moderate to intense precipitation was observed over Italy. A 3DVar realised at CNR-ISAC (National Research Council of Italy, Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate) is used to assimilate two different satellite-derived rain rate products, both exploiting geostationary (GEO), infrared (IR), and low-Earth-orbit (LEO) microwave (MW) measurements: One is based on an artificial neural network (NN), and the other one is the operational P-IN-SEVIRI-PMW product (H60), delivered in near-real time by the EUMETSAT HSAF (Satellite Application Facility in Support of Operational Hydrology and Water Management). The forecast is verified in two periods: the hours from 1 to 4 (1–4 h phase) and the hours from 3 to 6 (3–6 h phase) after the assimilation. The results show that the rain rate assimilation improves the precipitation forecast in both seasons and for both forecast phases, even if the improvement in the 3–6 h phase is found mainly in summer. The assimilation of H60 produces a high number of false alarms, which has a negative impact on the forecast, especially for intense events (30 mm/3 h). The assimilation of the NN rain rate gives more balanced predictions, improving the control forecast without significantly increasing false alarms.

Due to the severe threat of tropical cyclones to human life, recent years have witnessed an increase in the investigations on raindrop size distributions of tropical cyclones to improve their quantitative precipitation estimation algorithms and modeling simulations. So far, the raindrop size distributions of tropical cyclones using disdrometer measurements have been conducted at coastal and inland stations, but such studies are still missing for oceanic locations. To the authors’ knowledge, the current study examines—for the first time—the raindrop size distributions of fourteen tropical cyclones observed (during 2003–2007) at an oceanic station, Aimeliik, located in the Palau islands in the Western Pacific. The raindrop size distributions of Western Pacific tropical cyclones measured in the Palau islands showed unlike characteristics between stratiform and convective clusters, with a larger mass-weighted mean diameter and smaller normalized intercept parameter in the convective type. The contribution of the drop diameters to the total number concentration showed a gradual decrease with the increase in drop diameter size. Raindrop size distributions of Western Pacific tropical cyclones measured in the Palau islands differed slightly from Taiwan and Japan. The helpfulness of empirical relations in raindrop size distribution in rainfall estimation algorithms of ground-based (Z–R, μ–Λ, Dm–R, and Nw–R) and remote-sensing (σm–Dm, μo–Dm, Dm–Zku, and Dm–Zka) radars are evaluated. Furthermore, the present study also related the rainfall kinetic energy of fourteen tropical cyclones with rainfall rate and mass-weighted mean diameter (KEtime–R, KEmm–R, and KEmm–Dm). The raindrop size distribution empirical relations appraised in this study offer a chance to: (1) enhance the rain retrieval algorithms of ground-based, remote sensing radars; and (2) improve rainfall kinetic energy estimations using disdrometers and GPM DPR in rainfall erosivity studies.

Quantification of uncertainties associated with satellite precipitation products is a prior requirement for their better applications in earth science studies. An improved scheme is developed in this study to decompose mean bias error (MBE) and mean square error (MSE) into three components, i.e., MBE and MSE associated hits, missed precipitation, and false alarms, respectively, which are weighted by their relative frequencies of occurrence (RFO). The trend of total MBE or MSE is then naturally decomposed into six components according to the chain rule for derivatives. Quantitative estimation of individual contributions to total MBE and MSE is finally derived. The method is applied to validation of Integrated MultisatellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) in Mainland China. MBE associated with false alarms is an important driver for total MBE, while MSE associated with hits accounts for more than 85% of MSE, except in inland semi-arid area. The RFO of false alarms increases, whereas the RFO of missed precipitation decreases. Both factors lead in part to a growing trend for total MBE. Detection of precipitation should be improved in the IMERG algorithm. More specifically, the priority should be to reduce false alarms.

The current study summarizes the raindrop size distributions (RSDs) characteristic of the North Indian Ocean (NIO) tropical cyclones (TCs) measured with ground-based disdrometers installed at the coastal (Thiruvananthapuram, 8.5335°N, 76.9047°E) and inland (Kadapa, 14.4742°N, 78.7098°E) stations in south India. Raindrop size distribution (DSD) over the complex terrain of Guangdong Province, southern China, was studied using six disdrometers operated by the Guangdong Meteorology Service during the period 1 March 2018 to 30 August 2022 (~5 years). To analyze the long-term DSD characteristics over complex topography in southern China, three stations on the windward side, Haifeng, Enping and Qingyuan, and three stations on the leeward side, Meixian, Luoding and Xuwen, were utilized. The median mass-weighted diameter (Dm) value was higher on the windward than on the leeward side, and the windward-side stations also showed greater Dm variability. With regard to the median generalized intercept (log10Nw) value, the log10Nw values decreased from coastal to mountainous areas. Although there were some differences in Dm, log10Nw and liquid water content (LWC) frequency between the six stations, there were still some similarities, with the Dm, log10Nw and LWC frequency all showing a single-peak curve. In addition, the diurnal variation of the mean log10Nw had a negative relationship with Dm diurnal variation although the inverse relationship was not particularly evident at the Haifeng site. The diurnal mean rainfall rate also peaked in the afternoon and exceeded the maximum at night which indicated that strong land heating in the daytime significantly influenced the local DSD variation. What is more, the number concentration of drops, N(D), showed an exponential shape which decreased monotonically for all rainfall rate types at the six observation sites, and an increase in diameter caused by increases in the rainfall rate was also noticeable. As the rainfall rate increased, the N(D) for sites on the windward side (i.e., Haifeng, Enping and Qingyuan) were higher than for the sites on the leeward side (i.e., Meixian, Luoding and Xuwen), and the difference between them also became distinct. The abovementioned DSD characteristic differences also showed appreciable variability in convective precipitation between stations on the leeward side (i.e., Meixian, Luoding and Xuwen) and those on the windward side (Haifeng and Enping, but not Qingyuan). This study enhances the precision of numerical weather forecast models in predicting precipitation and verifies the accuracy of measuring precipitation through remote sensing instruments, including weather radars located on the ground. Dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) on the Core GPM satellite provides spaceborne three-dimensional observations of precipitation fields and surface rainfall rate with quasi-global coverage. The present study evaluates the behavior of liquid precipitation intensity, radar reflectivity factor (ZKu and ZKa) and drop size distribution (DSD) parameters (weighted mean diameter Dm and intercept parameter Nw) of the GPM DPR-derived products, version 07, from 2014 to 2023. Observations from seven Parsivel disdrometers located in different topographic zones in the Western Mediterranean are taken as ground references. Four matching techniques between satellite estimates and ground level observations were tested, and the best results were found for the so-called optimal comparison approach. Overall, GPM DPR products captured the variability of the observed DSD well at different rainfall intensities. However, overestimation of the mean Dm and underestimation of the mean Nw were observed, being much more sensitive to errors in drop diameters larger than 1.5 mm. Moreover, the lowest errors were found for radar reflectivity factor and Dm, and the highest for Nw and rainfall rate. In addition, the GPM DPR convective and stratiform classification was tested, and a substantial overestimation of stratiform cases compared to disdrometer observations were found. The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Core Observatory is equipped with a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) with capability of measuring precipitation simultaneously at frequencies of 13.6 GHz (Ku-band) and 35.5 GHz (Ka-band). Since the GPM-DPR cannot use information from polarization diversity, radar reflectivity factor is the most important parameter used in all retrievals. In this study, GPM’s observations of reflectivity at dual-frequency and instantaneous rainfall products are compared quantitatively against dual-polarization ground-based NEXRAD radars from the GPM Validation Network (VN). The ground radars, chosen for this study, are located in the southeastern plains of the U.S.A. with altitudes varying from 5 to 210 m. It is a challenging task to quantitatively compare measurements from space-based and ground-based platforms due to their difference in resolution volumes and viewing geometry. To perform comparisons on a point-to-point basis, radar observations need to be volume matched by averaging data in common volume or by re-sampling data to a common grid system. In this study, a 3-D volume matching technique first proposed by Bolen and Chandrasekar (2003) and later modified by Schwaller and Morris (2011) is applied to both radar data. DPR and ground radar observations and products are cross validated against each other with a large data set. Over 250 GPM overpass cases at 5 NEXRAD locations, starting from April 2014 to June 2018, have been considered. Analysis shows that DPR Ku- and Ka-Band reflectivities are well matched with ground radar with correlation coefficient as high as 0.9 for Ku-band and 0.85 for Ka-band. Ground radar calibration is also checked by observing variation in mean biases of reflectivity between DPR and GR over time. DPR rainfall products are also evaluated. Though DPR underestimates higher rainfall rates in convective cases, its overall performance is found to be satisfactory.

Wireless communication has become a very important part of our lives, and it is well known that meteorological factors affect the quality of communication links, especially at higher frequencies because the physical dimensions of raindrops, hail stones, and snowflakes are on a similar wavelength to the propagating radio frequency. Millimeter-waves are an important technology for fifth-generation cellular networks which are currently being deployed all over the world. Since atmospheric effects are challenging in millimeter-wave transmissions, in this paper, we conducted line-of-sight field measurements at 25 GHz and 38 GHz. We monitored the received signal during rainfall events and compared the theoretical attenuation and the recorded rain-induced attenuation. We also derived the rain-induced attenuation (A) and rainfall rate (R) relation for stratiform and convective rain, respectively, using local rain drop size distribution (DSD) information at our measurement site collected during the period of two years. Furthermore, opportunistic sensing of atmospheric phenomena using microwave or millimeter-wave communication links in commercial cellular networks has recently attracted more attention in meteorological research worldwide. The accuracy of calculating rainfall rates from microwave links highly depends on the retrieval model and values of coefficients in the model, i.e., a and b of the A-R relation model. Here, the coefficients a and b are estimated based on local DSD measurement, and the performance of the improved A-R model is evaluated using propagated signal power based on measurement data. Compared to the (a, b) coefficients in the International Telecommunication Union Recommendation (ITU-R) P.838 document, the derived coefficients achieved an improved rainfall rate estimation. In this study, the quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) capability of three X-band dual-polarization phased array radars (PAR) in Guangzhou, South China, was demonstrated, with an S-band operational dual-polarization radar as the benchmark. Rainfall rate (R) estimators based on the specific differential phase (KDP) for summer precipitation for both X-band and S-band radars were derived from the raindrop size distributions (DSDs) observed by a 2-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) in South China. Rainfall estimates from the radars were evaluated with gauge observations in three events, including pre-summer rainfall, typhoon precipitation, and local severe convective precipitation. Observational results showed that radar echoes from the X-band PARs suffered much more severely from attenuation than those from the S-band radar. Compared to S-band observations, the X-band echoes can disappear when the signal-to-noise ratio drops to a certain level due to severe attenuation, resulting in different estimated rainfall areas for X- and S-band radars. The attenuation corrected by KDP had good consistency with S-band observations, but the accuracy of attenuation correction was affected by DSD uncertainty and may vary in different types of precipitation. The QPE results demonstrated that the R(KDP) estimator produced better rainfall accumulations from the X-band PAR observations compared to the S-band observations. For both the X-band and S-band radars, the estimates of hourly accumulated rainfall became more accurate in heavier rainfall, due to the decreases of both the DSD uncertainty and the impact of measurement errors. In the heavy precipitation area, the estimation accuracy of the X-band radar was high, and the overestimation of the S-band radar was obvious. Through the analysis of the ZH-ZDR distribution in the three weather events, it was found that the X-band PAR with the capability of high spatiotemporal observations can capture minute-level changes in the microphysical characteristics, which help improve the estimation accuracy of ground rainfall. A methodology to process radar wind profiler Doppler spectra is presented and implemented for an UHF Degreane PCL1300 system. First, double peak signal detection is conducted at each height level and, then, vertical continuity checks for each radar beam ensure physically consistent measurements. Second, horizontal and vertical wind, kinetic energy flux components, Doppler moments, and different precipitation-related variables are computed. The latter include a new precipitation type estimate, which considers rain, snow, and mixed types, and, finally, specific variables for liquid precipitation, including drop size distribution parameters, liquid water content and rainfall rate. The methodology is illustrated with a 48 h precipitation event, recorded during the Cerdanya-2017 field campaign, carried out in the Eastern Pyrenees. Verification is performed with a previously existing process for wind profiler data regarding wind components, plus precipitation estimates derived from Micro Rain Radar and disdrometer observations. The results indicated that the new methodology produced comparable estimates of wind components to the previous methodology (Bias < 0.1 m/s, RMSE ≈ 1.1 m/s), and was skilled in determining precipitation type when comparing the lowest estimate of disdrometer data for snow and rain, but did not correctly identify mixed precipitation cases. Satellite communication is a promising transmission technique to implement 5G and beyond networks. Attenuation due to rain begins at a frequency of 10 GHz in temperate regions. However, some research indicates that such attenuation effects start from 5–7 GHz, especially in tropical regions. Therefore, modeling rain attenuation is significant for propagating electromagnetic waves to achieve the required quality of service. In this survey, different slant link rain attenuation prediction models have been examined, classified, and analyzed, and various features like improvements, drawbacks, and particular aspects of these models have been tabulated. This survey provides various techniques for obtaining input data sets, including rain height, efficient trajectory length measurement techniques, and rainfall rate conversion procedures. No survey of the Earth–space link models for rain attenuation is available to the best of our knowledge. In this study, 23 rain attenuation models have been investigated. For easy readability and conciseness, the details of each model have not been included. The comparative analysis will assist in propagation modeling and planning the link budget of slant links. Iraq is facing a water shortage due to water scarcity and anthropogenic activities. The recent advance in technologies in geophysical methods has made groundwater monitoring possible. Time-variable gravity data and outputs of the climatic model, as well as rainfall data, are integrated to investigate the spatio-temporal mass variations caused by groundwater changes over Iraq. The findings are: (1) For the entire study period (04/2002–12/2020), Period I (04/2002–12/2006), Period II (01/2007–12/2017), and Period III (01/2018–12/2020), the study region had an average annual precipitation rate of 223.4, 252.5, 194.2, and 311.6 mm/y, respectively. (2) The average Terrestrial Water Storage variations (ΔTWSs) varied from −5.79 ± 0.70 to −5.11 ± 0.70 mm/y based on the three different gravity solutions with a mean of −5.51 ± 0.68 mm/y for the entire investigated period. (3) For Periods I, II, and III, the average ΔTWS fluctuation was calculated to be +6.82 ± 1.92, −6.20 ± 1.17, and +28.58 ± 12.78 mm/y, respectively. (4) During the entire period, Periods I, II, and II, the groundwater fluctuation was averaged at −4.86 ± 0.68, +2.47 ± 2.20, −3.79 ± 1.20, and −4.63 ± 12.99 mm/y, respectively, after subtracting the non-groundwater components. (5) At the beginning of the 2007 drought during Period II, a decline in rainfall rate, and significant groundwater withdrawal during Period III all appear to have contributed to groundwater depletion. The Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, as well as the Mesopotamian plain, receive water from the running streams created by the ground relief. The area of the Mesopotamian plain, which has a thicker sedimentary sequence that can reach 9000 m, is found to have a positive TWS signal, indicating that its groundwater potential is higher. For quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) based on polarimetric radar (PR) and rain gauges (RGs), the quality of the radar data is crucial for estimation accuracy. This paper proposes a combined radar quality index (CRQI) to represent the quality of the radar data used for QPE and an algorithm that uses CRQI to improve the QPE performance. Nine heavy rainfall events that occurred in Guangdong Province, China, were used to evaluate the QPE performance in five contrast tests. The QPE performance was evaluated in terms of the overall statistics, spatial distribution, near real-time statistics, and microphysics. CRQI was used to identify good-quality data pairs (i.e., PR-based QPE and RG observation) for correcting estimators (i.e., relationships between the rainfall rate and the PR parameters) in real-time. The PR-based QPE performance was improved because estimators were corrected according to variations in the drop size distribution, especially for data corresponding to 1.1 mm < average Dm < 1.4 mm, and 4 < average log10Nw < 4.5. Some underestimations caused by the beam broadening effect, excessive beam height, and partial beam blockages, which could not be mitigated by traditional algorithms, were significantly mitigated by the proposed algorithm using CRQI. The proposed algorithm reduced the root mean square error by 17.5% for all heavy rainfall events, which included three precipitation types: convective precipitation (very heavy rainfall), squall line (huge raindrops), and stratocumulus precipitation (small but dense raindrops). Although the best QPE performance was observed for stratocumulus precipitation, the biggest improvement in performance with the proposed algorithm was observed for the squall line. Traditional radar-based rainfall estimation is typically done by known functional relationships between the rainfall intensity (R) and radar measurables, such as R–Zh, R–(Zh, ZDR), etc. One of the biggest advantages of machine learning algorithms is the applicability to a non-linear relationship between a dependent variable and independent variables without any predefined relationships. We explored the potential use of two supervised machine learning methods (regression tree and random forest) in rainfall estimation using dual-polarization radar variables. The regression tree does not require normalization and scaling of data; however, this method is quite unstable since each split depends on the parent split. Since the random forest is an ensemble method of regression trees, it has less variability in prediction compared with regression trees, but consumes more computer resources. We considered several different configurations for machine learning algorithms with different sets of dependent and independent variables. The random forest model was appropriately tuned. In the test of variable importance, the specific differential phase (differential reflectivity) was the most important variable to predict the rainfall rate (residual that is the difference between the true rainfall rate and the one estimated from the R–Z relationship). The models were evaluated by 10-fold cross-validation. The best model was the random forest model using a residual with the non-classified training set. The results indicated that the machine learning algorithms outperformed the traditional R–Z relationship. Then, we applied the best machine learning model to an S-band dual-polarization radar (Mt. Myeonbong) and validated the result with ground rain gauges. The results of the application to radar data showed that the estimates of the residuals had spatial variability. The stratiform and weak rain areas had positive residuals while convective areas had negative residuals, indicating that the spatial error structure driven by the R–Z relationship was well captured by the model. The rainfall rates of all pixels over the study area were adjusted with the estimated residuals. Satellite remote sensing complements rain gauges and ground radars as the primary sources of precipitation data. While significant advancements have been made in spaceborne precipitation estimation since the 1960s, the emergence of multi-sensor precipitation estimation (MPE) in the early 1990s revolutionized global precipitation data generation by integrating infrared and microwave observations. Among others, Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) plays a crucial role in providing invaluable data sources for MPE by utilizing passive microwave sensors and geostationary infrared sensors. MPE represents the current state-of-the-art approach for generating high-quality, high-resolution global satellite precipitation products (SPPs), employing various methods such as cloud motion analysis, probability matching, adjustment ratios, regression techniques, neural networks, and weighted averaging. International collaborations, such as the International Precipitation Working Group and the Precipitation Virtual Constellation, have significantly contributed to enhancing our understanding of the uncertainties associated with MPEs and their corresponding SPPs. It has been observed that SPPs exhibit higher reliability over tropical oceans compared to mid- and high-latitudes, particularly during cold seasons or in regions with complex terrains. To further advance MPE research, future efforts should focus on improving accuracy for extremely low- and high-precipitation events, solid precipitation measurements, as well as orographic precipitation estimation. To improve radar-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) methods, this study investigated the relationship between radar reflectivity (Z) and hourly rainfall intensity (R) using data from 289 precipitation events in Shanghai between September 2020 and March 2024. Two Z-R relationship models were compared in terms of their fitting performance: Z = 270.81 R1.09 (empirically fitted relationship) and Z = 300 R1.4 (standard relationship). The results show that the Z = 270.81 R1.09 model outperforms the Z = 300 R1.4 model in terms of fitting accuracy. Specifically, the Z = 270.81 R1.09 model more effectively captures the nonlinear relationship between radar reflectivity and rainfall intensity, with a higher degree of agreement between the fitted curve and the observed data points. This model demonstrated superior performance across all 289 precipitation events. This study evaluated the performance of four machine learning approaches while incorporating five meteorological features: specific differential phase shift (KDP), echo-top height (ET), vertical liquid water content (VIL), differential reflectivity (ZDR), and correlation coefficient (CC). Nine QPE models were constructed using these inputs. The key findings are as follows: (1) For models with a single-variable input, the KAN deep learning model outperformed Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Decision Trees, Support Vector Machines, and the traditional Z-R relationship. (2) When six features were used as inputs, the accuracy of the machine learning models improved significantly, with the KAN deep learning model outperforming other machine learning methods. Compared to using only radar reflectivity, the KAN deep learning model reduced the MRE by 20.78%, MAE by 4.07%, and RMSE by 12.74%, while increasing the coefficient of determination (R2) by 18.74%. (3) The integration of multiple meteorological features and machine learning optimization significantly enhanced QPE accuracy, with the KAN deep learning model performing best under varying meteorological conditions. The Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative, which started in 2007 and is still in development as of 2024, aims to combat desertification and enhance sustainability over 8000 km across Africa's Sahel-Sahara region, encompassing 11 key countries and 7 countries associated with the initiative. Because of limited ground measurements for the GGW project, the progress and impacts of the GGW initiative have been a challenging problem to monitor and assess. This study aims to utilize satellite remote sensing data to analyze changes in the key factors related to the sustainability of the GGW region, including land cover type, vegetation index, precipitation rate, land surface temperature (LST), surface soil moisture, etc. Results from temporal analysis of these factors indicate that the deserts along the GGW are retreating and the regional mean of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has an increasing trend, although the precipitation has a slightly decreasing trend, over the past two decades. Further analysis shows spatial heterogeneity of vegetation, precipitation, and soil moisture changes. Desertification is still a challenging issue in some GGW countries. Mediterranean tropical-like cyclones, or Medicanes, present unique challenges for precipitation estimations due to their rapid development and localized impacts. This study evaluates the performance of satellite precipitation products in capturing the precipitation associated with Medicane Daniel that struck Greece in early September 2023. Utilizing a combination of ground-based observations, reanalysis, and satellite-derived precipitation data, we assess the accuracy and spatial distribution of the satellite precipitation products GPM IMERG, GSMaP, and CMOPRH during the cyclone event, which formed in the Eastern Mediterranean from 4 to 7 September 2023, hitting with unprecedented, enormous amounts of rainfall, especially in the region of Thessaly in central Greece. The results indicate that, while satellite precipitation products demonstrate overall skill in capturing the broad-scale precipitation patterns associated with Medicane Daniel, discrepancies exist in estimating localized intense rainfall rates, particularly in convective cells within the cyclone's core. Indeed, most of the satellite precipitation products studied in this work showed a misplacement of the highest amounts of associated rainfall, a significant underestimation of the event, and large unbiased root mean square error in the areas of heavy precipitation. The total precipitation field from IMERG Late Run and CMORPH showed the smallest bias (but significant) and good temporal correlation against rain gauges and ERA5-Land reanalysis data as a reference, while IMERG Final Run and GSMaP showed the largest underestimation and overestimation, respectively. In recent years, precipitable water vapor has emerged as a key atmospheric parameter in weather prediction research. However, relying on only one parameter does not always accurately predict rainfall, as other atmospheric parameters also contribute to initiating rain events. In our previous study, we explored a methodology for rainfall forecasting based on the atmospheric delay gradient at an individual station in the tropical region. Commonly referred to as the atmospheric gradient, it accounts for the delay in GNSS signals due to changes in horizontal refractivity while propagating through the troposphere to the ground station. This paper discusses the spatial and temporal correlation of the gradient with precipitation occurring over a region. We have investigated different features, such as gradient magnitude, gradient convergence, and the flux of the atmospheric gradient, to propose potential nowcasting criteria for precipitation in the tropical climatic zone. The atmospheric gradient in the surrounding region orients toward the area of precipitation as the rain event approaches. This gradient gradually alters its orientation and converges toward the region of rainfall at the time of precipitation, introducing the concept of gradient convergence. This phenomenon results in an inward gradient flux at the time of the downpour, which presents a potential parameter for rainfall prediction over an area. We also proposed investigating area sizes of 4° × 4° or 8° × 8°, depending on the gradient feature, to establish a forecasting methodology for rainfall. The weather front in the tropical region begins to initiate 12 h before the actual time of occurrence and advances toward the area where it will have an impact from a more distant location. This article presents a detailed investigation of various features of the atmospheric gradient and its potential to nowcast rainfall for a region, as well as proposes the lead time for long-term weather predictions. The microphysical characteristics of precipitation and their differences among four typical weather systems over Hainan Island were investigated via multi-source observations from 2019 to 2023. We find that the cold fronts (CFs) have the greatest concentration of small raindrops, with a more substantial raindrop condensation process. The subtropical highs (SHs), with primarily deep convection and more prominent evaporation at low levels, lead to greater medium-to-large raindrops (diameters > 1 mm). Tropical cyclones (TCs) are characterized mainly by raindrop condensation and breakup, resulting in high concentrations of small raindrops and low concentrations of large raindrops. The trough of low pressures (TLPs) produces the lowest concentration of small raindrops because of evaporation processes. The convective clusters of the SHs are between maritime-like and continental-like convective clusters, and those of the other three types of weather systems are closer to maritime-like convective clusters. The relationships between the shape parameter (μ) and the slope parameter (Λ), as well as between the reflectivity factors (Z) and the rain rates (R), were established for the four weather systems. Accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) is fundamental for a large number of hydrometeorological applications, especially when addressing extreme rainfall phenomena. This paper presents a comprehensive comparison of various rainfall estimation methods, specifically those relying on weather radar data, rain gauge data, and their fusion. The study evaluates the accuracy and reliability of each method in estimating rainfall for a severe event that occurred in Tuscany, Italy. The results obtained confirm that merging radar and rain gauge data outperforms both individual approaches by reducing errors and improving the overall reliability of precipitation estimates. To control the quality of X-band marine radar images for retrieving information and improve the inversion accuracy, the research on rainfall detection from marine radar images is investigated in this paper. Currently, the difference in the correlation characteristic between the rain-contaminated radar image and the rain-free radar image is utilized to detect rainfall. However, only the correlation coefficient at a position in the lagged azimuth is utilized, and a statistical hard threshold is adopted. By deeply investigating the difference between the calculated correlation characteristic and the marine radar images, the correlation coefficient in the lagged azimuth can be used to constitute the correlation coefficient feature vector (CCFV). Then, an unsupervised K-means clustering learning method is used to obtain the clustering centers. Based on the constituted CCFV and the K-means clustering algorithm, a new method of rainfall detection from the collected X-band marine radar images is proposed. The acquired X-band marine radar images are utilized to verify the effectiveness of the proposed rainfall detection method. Compared with the zero-pixel percentage (ZPP) method, the correlation coefficient difference (CCD) method, the support vector machine (SVM) method and the wave texture difference (WTD) method, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method could finish the task of rainfall detection, and the detection accuracy increases by 10.0 % , 6.3 % , 2.0 % and 0.6 % , respectively, for the proportion of the 25 % training dataset. Millimeter-wave radars are widely used in various environments due to their excellent detection capabilities. However, the detection performance in severe weather environments is still an important research challenge. In this paper, the propagation characteristics of millimeter-wave radar in a rainfall environment are thoroughly investigated, and the modeling of the millimeter-wave radar echo signal in a rainfall environment is completed. The effect of rainfall on radar detection performance is verified through experiments, and an anti-rain clutter interference method based on a convolutional neural network is proposed. The method combines image recognition and classification techniques to effectively distinguish target signals from rain clutter in radar echo signals based on feature differences. In addition, this paper compares the recognition results of the proposed method with VGGnet and Resnet. The experimental results show that the proposed convolutional neural network method significantly improves the target detection capability of the radar system in a rainfall environment, verifying the method's effectiveness and accuracy. Melt ponds play a crucial role in the melting of Arctic sea ice. Studying the evolution of melt ponds is essential for understanding changes in Arctic sea ice. In this study, we used a revised sea ice model to simulate the evolution of melt ponds along the MOSAiC drift at a resolution of 10 m. A novel melt pond parameterization scheme simulates the movement of meltwater under the influence of gravity over a realistic sea ice topography. We evaluated different melt pond parameterization schemes based on remote sensing observations. The absolute deviation of the maximum pond coverage simulated by the new scheme is within 3%, while differences among parameterization schemes exceed 50%. Errors were found to be primarily due to the calculation of macroscopic meltwater loss, which is related to sea ice surface topography. Previous studies have indicated that sea ice with a lower surface roughness has a larger catchment area, resulting in larger pond coverage during the melt season. This study has identified an opposing mechanism: sea ice with lower surface roughness has a larger catchment area connected to the macroscopic flaws of the sea ice surface, which leads to more macroscopic drainage into the ocean and thereby a decrease in melt pond coverage. Experimental simulations showed that sea ice with 46% higher surface roughness, resulting in 12% less macroscopic drainage, exhibited a 38% higher maximum pond fraction. The presence of macroscopic flaws is related to the fragmentation of sea ice cover. As Arctic sea ice cover becomes increasingly fragmented and mobile, this mechanism will become more significant. The Normalized Differential Spectral Attenuation (NDSA) technique was proposed years ago as an active method for measuring integrated water vapor (IWV) along a Ku/K-band radio link immersed (totally or partially) in the troposphere. The approach is of the active kind, as it relies on the transmission of a couple of sinusoidal signals, whose power is measured at the receiver, thus providing the differential attenuation measurements from which IWV estimates can be in turn derived. In 2018, a prototype instrument providing such differential attenuation measurements was completed and set up for a first measurement campaign aimed at demonstrating the NDSA method. By the end of June 2022, the instrument was profoundly modified and upgraded so that a second measurement campaign could be carried out from 1 August to 30 November 2022. The transmitter was placed on the top of Monte Gomito (44.1277°lat, 10.6434°lon, 1892 m a.s.l.) and the receiver on the roof of the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Florence (43.7985°lat, 11.2528°lon, 50 m a.s.l.). The resulting radio link length was 61.15 km. Four ground weather stations of the regional weather service were selected among those available. In this paper, we describe the upgraded instrument and present the outcomes of the new measurement campaign, whose purpose was mainly to compare the IWV estimates provided by the instrument with the ground sensor measurements of air temperature, air humidity, barometric pressure, and rainfall. In particular, we show that the temporal trends of the two IWV estimates are qualitatively consistent, and that the instrument is able to provide IWV estimates also in the presence of fog and rainfall. Conversely, a quantitative evaluation through comparison with IWV data from point weather station measurements appears challenging due to the significant spatial variability in temperature and relative humidity, even between couples of stations that are quite close to each other. Climate change is a major issue in wastewater management at local and regional levels, as it affects the frequency of flooding and therefore the need to update infrastructure and design regulations. To this end, rainfall data are the main input to hydraulic models used for the design of drainage systems and, in advanced contexts, for their real-time monitoring. Field observations are of great interest and water authorities are increasing the number of existing rain gauges, but at present they are scarce and require maintenance, so their number needs to be considered with their O&M costs. Remote sensors, including both the existing satellite rain products (SRPs) and radar imagery (RI), can complete the spatial distribution of rainfall and optimise the cost of observations. While most SRPs are based on re-analysis and have a lag in availability, RI can be obtained in near real time and is becoming increasingly popular in weather forecasting applications. Unfortunately, actual rainfall forecasts from RI observations are not accurate enough for real-time monitoring of drainage systems. It is rare to conduct a comparative analysis of precipitation characteristics across regions based on long-term homogeneous active satellite observations. By collocating the Global Precipitation Measurement Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (GPM DPR) observations with European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts 5th Reanalysis (ERA5) data, this study comparatively examines the microphysics of monsoon precipitation in the rainy season over the Yangtze-and-Huai River Basin (YHRB) and South China (SC) from 2014 to 2023. The comparative analysis is made in terms of precipitation types and intensities, precipitation efficiency index (PEI), and ice phase layer (IPL) width. The results show that the mean near-surface precipitation rate and PEI are generally higher over SC (2.87 mm/h, 3.43 h−1) than over YHRB (2.27 mm/h, 3.22 h−1) due to the more frequent occurrence of convective precipitation. The DSD characteristics of heavy precipitation in the wet season for both regions are similar to those of deep ocean convection, which is associated with a greater amount of water vapor. However, over SC, there are larger but fewer raindrops in the near-surface precipitation. Moreover, moderate PEI precipitation is the main contributor to heavy precipitation (>8 mm/h). Stratiform precipitation over YHRB is frequent enough to contribute more than convective precipitation to heavy precipitation (8–20 mm/h). The combined effect of stronger convective available potential energy and low-level vertical wind favors intense convection over SC, resulting in a larger storm top height (STH) than that over YHRB. Consequently, it is conducive to enhancing the microphysical processes of the ice and melt phases within the precipitation. The vertical wind can also influence the liquid phase processes below the melting layer. An investigation is undertaken to explore a sudden quasi-linear precipitation and gale event that transpired in the afternoon of 30 May 2024 over Beijing. It was situated at the southwestern periphery of a double-center low-vortex system, where a moisture-rich belt efficiently channeled abundant warm, humid air northward from the south. The interplay between dynamical lifting, convergent airflow-induced uplift, and the amplifying effects of the northern mountainous terrain's topography creates favorable conditions that support the development and persistence of quasi-linear convective precipitation, accompanied by gale-force winds at the surface. The study also analyzes the impacts of five microphysics schemes (Lin, WSM6, Goddard, Morrison, and WDM6) employed in a weather research and forecasting (WRF) numerical model, with which the simulated rainfall and radar reflectivity are compared against ground-based rain gauge network and weather radar observations, respectively. Simulations with the five microphysics schemes demonstrate commendable skills in replicating the macroscopic quasi-linear pattern of the event. Among the schemes assessed, the WSM6 scheme exhibits its superior agreement with radar observations. The Morrison scheme demonstrates superior performance in predicting cumulative rainfall. Nevertheless, five microphysics schemes exhibit limitations in predicting the rainfall amount, the rainfall duration, and the rainfall area, with a discernible lag of approximately 30 min in predicting precipitation onset, indicating a tendency to forecast peak rainfall events slightly posterior to their true occurrence. Accurate predictions are crucial for addressing the challenges posed by climate change. Given South Korea's location within the East Asian summer monsoon domain, characterized by high spatiotemporal variability, enhancing prediction accuracy for regions experiencing heavy rainfall during the summer monsoon is essential. This study aims to derive temporal weighting functions using hybrid surface rainfall radar-observation data as the target, with input from two forecast datasets: the McGill Algorithm for Precipitation Nowcasting by Lagrangian Extrapolation (MAPLE) and the KLAPS Forecast System. The results indicated that the variability in the optimized parameters closely mirrored the variability in the rainfall events, demonstrating a consistent pattern. Comparison with previous blending results, which employed event-type-based weighting functions, showed significant deviation in the average AUC (0.076) and the least deviation (0.029). The optimized temporal weighting function effectively mitigated the limitations associated with varying forecast lead times in individual datasets, with RMSE values of 0.884 for the 1 h lead time of KLFS and 2.295 for the 4–6 h lead time of MAPLE. Qualitative precipitation forecasting plays a vital role in marine operational services. However, predicting heavy precipitation over the open ocean presents a significant challenge due to the limited availability of ground-based radar observations far from coastal regions. Recent advancements in deep learning models offer potential for oceanic precipitation nowcasting using satellite images. This study implemented an enhanced UNet model with an attention mechanism and a residual architecture (RA-UNet) to predict the precipitation rate within a 90 min time frame. A comparative analysis with the standard UNet and UNet with an attention algorithm revealed that the RA-UNet method exhibited superior accuracy metrics, such as the critical ratio index and probability of detection, with fewer false alarms. Two typical cases demonstrated that RA-UNet had a better ability to forecast monsoon precipitation as well as intense precipitation in a tropical cyclone. Understanding the macro and micro characteristics of precipitation in landfall typhoons is crucial to predicting the path and intensity of tropical cyclones by using numerical models. In this study, we use observations from the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission to analyze the microphysics of convection and stratiform precipitation during the landfall of Typhoon Lekima. The statistical results show that the correlation coefficient of the reflectivity factors of the spaceborne and ground-based radars is 0.77 and that the water content detected by the 18.7 GHz low-frequency vertical channel is positively correlated with the intense-precipitation rate. The storm top height is generally consistent with the location of heavy precipitation. The average near-surface precipitation rate and liquid water content of convective precipitation are higher than those of stratiform precipitation. The average mass-weighted raindrop diameter and particle number concentration of convective (stratiform) precipitation at a distance of 2 km above ground level are 1.52 mm (1.29 mm) and 39.52 (36.44, in decibel scale), respectively. Below the melting layer, there is a significant increase in average particle diameter, indicating that the collision aggregation growth process of raindrops is dominant. A new satellite-based technique for rainfall retrieval in high spatio-temporal resolution (3 km, 15 min) for Iran is presented. The algorithm is based on the infrared bands of the Meteosat Second Generation Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (MSG SEVIRI). Random forest models using microwave-only rainfall information of the Integrated Multi-SatEllite Retrieval for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) (IMERG) product as a reference were developed to (i) delineate the rainfall area and (ii) to assign the rainfall rate. The method was validated against independent microwave-only GPM IMERG rainfall data not used for model training. Additionally, the new technique was validated against completely independent gauge station data. The validation results show a promising performance of the new rainfall retrieval technique, especially when compared to the GPM IMERG IR-only rainfall product. The standard verification scored an average Heidke Skill Score of 0.4 for rain area delineation and an average R between 0.1 and 0.7 for rainfall rate assignment, indicating uncertainties for the Lut Desert area and regions with high altitude gradients. The current study summarizes the raindrop size distributions (RSDs) characteristic of the North Indian Ocean (NIO) tropical cyclones (TCs) measured with ground-based disdrometers installed at the coastal (Thiruvananthapuram, 8.5335°N, 76.9047°E) and inland (Kadapa, 14.4742°N, 78.7098°E) stations in south India. The NIO TCs observed at the coastal station showed more mid- and large-size drops (>1 mm) than the inland station. On the other hand, for both inland and coastal stations, small and mid-size drops (<3 mm) primarily contributed to the total number concentration and rainfall rate. The RSDs of the NIO TCs segregated into precipitation types (stratiform and convective) demonstrated the presence of more mid- and large-size drops at the coastal station. The RSD relations of the NIO TCs, which are used in rain retrieval algorithms of remote sensing (global precipitation measurement) radars, exhibited contrasts between the coastal and inland station. Further, the NIO TCs' rainfall kinetic energy relations, which are crucial in rainfall erosivity studies, estimated for the coastal station revealed dissimilar characteristics to that of the inland station. The conceivable thermo-dynamical and microphysical processes that are accountable for the disparities in the NIO TCs RSDs measured at the coastal and inland stations are also elucidated in this work. With current advances in automated driving, optical sensors like cameras and LiDARs are playing an increasingly important role in modern driver assistance systems. However, these sensors face challenges from adverse weather effects like fog and precipitation, which significantly degrade the sensor performance due to scattering effects in its optical path. Consequently, major efforts are being made to understand, model, and mitigate these effects. In this work, the reverse research question is investigated, demonstrating that these measurement effects can be exploited to predict occurring weather conditions by using state-of-the-art deep learning mechanisms. In order to do so, a variety of models have been developed and trained on a recorded multiseason dataset and benchmarked with respect to performance, model size, and required computational resources, showing that especially modern vision transformers achieve remarkable results in distinguishing up to 15 precipitation classes with an accuracy of 84.41% and predicting the corresponding precipitation rate with a mean absolute error of less than 0.47 mm/h, solely based on measurement noise. Therefore, this research may contribute to a cost-effective solution for characterizing precipitation with a commercial Flash LiDAR sensor, which can be implemented as a lightweight vehicle software feature to issue advanced driver warnings, adapt driving dynamics, or serve as a data quality measure for adaptive data preprocessing and fusion. Accurate marine wind detection under all-weather conditions is crucial for maritime activities. The joint detection of lidar and radar is supposed to be a potential way to carry out the all-weather sensing of wind. However, their performance analysis has not been well studied, particularly in the far sea area, where the wind-tracing particles are quite different from those inland. Based on the particle distributions above the sea surface under different weather conditions, this study investigated the scattering and attenuation effects of lidar and radar waves in open sea areas with the Mie theory and T-matrix method. Then, the maximum detection range and velocity accuracies of lidar/radar were comprehensively analyzed based on detection principles to optimize the combination of lidar and radar. According to the simulation results, it was difficult to maintain the detection capability of a single lidar/radar under all-weather conditions, and 1.55 μ m lidar and W-band radar presented a promising joint detection scheme, as they exhibited optimal weather adaptability in clear sky and precipitation conditions, respectively. The IMERG data product is an optimal combination of precipitation estimates from the Global Precipitation Mission (GPM), making use of a variety of data types, primarily data from various spaceborne passive instruments. Previous versions of the IMERG product have been extensively validated by comparisons with gauge data and ground-based radars over land. However, IMERG rain rates, especially sub-daily, over open ocean are less validated due to the scarcity of comparison data, particularly with the relatively new Version 07. To address this issue, we consider IMERG V07 30-min data acquired in tropical cyclones over open ocean. We perform two tasks. The first is a straightforward comparison between IMERG precipitation rates and those retrieved from the GPM Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR). From this, we find that IMERG and DPR are close at low rain rates, while, at high rain rates, IMERG tends to be lower than DPR. The second task is the assessment of IMERG's ability to represent or detect structures commonly seen in tropical cyclones, including the annular structure and concentric eyewalls. In addressing the challenges of quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) using weather radar, the importance of enhancing the rainfall estimates for applications such as flash flood forecasting and hydropower generation management is recognized. This study employed dual-polarization weather radar data to refine the traditional Z–R relationship, which often needs higher accuracy in areas with complex meteorological phenomena. Utilizing tree-based machine learning algorithms, such as random forest and gradient boosting, this research analyzed polarimetric variables to capture the intricate patterns within the Z–R relationship. The results highlight machine learning's potential to improve the precision of precipitation estimation, especially under challenging weather conditions. Satellite precipitation products can help improve precipitation estimates where ground-based observations are lacking; however, their relative accuracy and applicability in data-scarce areas remain unclear. Here, we evaluated the accuracy of different satellite precipitation datasets for the Lancang River Basin, Western China, including the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42RT, the Global Precipitation Measurement Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals (GPM IMERG), and Fengyun 2G (FY-2G) datasets. The results showed that GPM IMERG and FY-2G are superior to TRMM 3B42RT for meeting local research needs. A subsequent bias correction on these two datasets significantly increased the correlation coefficient and probability of detection of the products and reduced error indices such as the root mean square error and mean absolute error. To further improve data quality, we proposed a novel correction–fusion method based on window sliding data correction and Bayesian data fusion. Specifically, the corrected FY-2G dataset was merged with GPM IMERG Early, Late, and Final Runs. The resulting FY-Early, FY-Late, and FY-Final fusion datasets showed high correlation coefficients, strong detection performances, and few observation errors, thereby effectively extending local precipitation data sources. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for the rational use of satellite precipitation products in data-scarce areas, as well as reliable data support for precipitation forecasting and water resource management in the Lancang River Basin. Satellite rainfall estimates (SREs) play a crucial role in weather monitoring, forecasting and modeling, particularly in regions where ground-based observations may be limited. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of three commonly used SREs—African Rainfall Climatology version 2 (ARC2), Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS) and Tropical Application of Meteorology using SATellite data and ground-based observation (TAMSAT)— with respect to their performance in detecting rainfall patterns in Nigeria at daily scales from 2002 to 2022. Observed data obtained from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) are used as reference data. Evaluation metrics such as correlation coefficient, root mean square error, mean error, bias, probability of detection (POD), false alarm ratio (FAR), and critical success index (CSI) are employed to assess the performance of the SREs. The results show that all the SREs exhibit low bias during the major rainfall season from May to October, and the products significantly overestimate observed rainfall during the dry period from November to March in the Sahel and Savannah Zones. Similarly, over the Guinea Zone, all the products indicate overestimation in the dry season. The underperformance of SREs in dry seasons could be attributed to the rainfall retrieval algorithms, intensity of rainfall occurrence and spatial-temporal resolution. These factors could potentially lead to the accuracy of the rainfall retrieval being reduced due to intense stratiform clouds. However, all the SREs indicated better detection capabilities and less false alarms during the wet season than in dry periods. CHIRPS and TAMSAT exhibited high POD and CSI values with the least FAR across agro-climatic zones during dry periods. Point cloud-based detection focuses on land traffic, rarely marine, facing issues with ships: it struggles in bad weather due to reliance on adverse weather data and fails to detect ships effectively due to overlooking size and appearance differences. Addressing the above challenges, our work introduces point cloud data of marine scenarios under realistically simulated adverse weather conditions and a dedicated Ship Detector tailored for marine environments. To adapt to various maritime weather conditions, we simulate realistic rain and fog in collected marine scene point cloud data. Additionally, addressing the issue of losing geometric and height information during feature extraction for large objects, we propose a Ship Detector. It employs a dual-branch sparse convolution layer for extracting multi-scale 3D feature maps, effectively minimizing height information loss. Additionally, a multi-scale 2D convolution module is utilized, which encodes and decodes feature maps and directly employs 3D feature maps for target prediction. To reduce dependency on existing data and enhance model robustness, our training dataset includes simulated point cloud data representing adverse weather conditions. This paper describes a new rainfall rate retrieval algorithm, developed within the EUMETSAT H SAF program, based on the Passive microwave Neural network Precipitation Retrieval approach (PNPR v3), designed to work with the conically scanning Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI). A new rain/no-rain classification scheme, also based on the NN approach, which provides different rainfall masks for different minimum thresholds and degree of reliability, is also described. The algorithm is trained on an extremely large observational database, built from GPM global observations between 2014 and 2016, where the NASA 2B-CMB (V04) rainfall rate product is used as reference. In order to assess the performance of PNPR v3 over the globe, an independent part of the observational database is used in a verification study. The good results found over all surface types (CC > 0.90, ME < −0.22 mm h−1, RMSE < 2.75 mm h−1 and FSE% < 100% for rainfall rates lower than 1 mm h−1 and around 30–50% for moderate to high rainfall rates), demonstrate the good outcome of the input selection procedure, as well as of the training and design phase of the neural network. For further verification, two case studies over Italy are also analysed and a good consistency of PNPR v3 retrievals with simultaneous ground radar observations and with the GMI GPROF V05 estimates is found. PNPR v3 is a global rainfall retrieval algorithm, able to optimally exploit the GMI multi-channel response to different surface types and precipitation structures, that provide global rainfall retrieval in a computationally very efficient way, making the product suitable for near-real time operational applications. The Tianshan Mountains are known as the “Water Tower of Central Asia” and are of significant strategic importance for Xinjiang as well as the Central Asian region. Accurately monitoring the spatiotemporal distribution of precipitation in the Tianshan Mountains is crucial for understanding global water cycles and climate change. Raindrop Size Distribution (DSD) parameters play an important role in improving quantitative precipitation estimation with radar and understanding microphysical precipitation processes. In this study, DSD parameters in the Tianshan Mountains were evaluated on the basis of Global Precipitation Measurement mission (GPM) dual-frequency radar data (DPR) and ground-based laser disdrometer observations from 2019 to 2024. With the disdrometer observations as the true values, we performed spatiotemporal matching between the satellite radar and laser disdrometer data. The droplet spectrum parameters retrieved with the GPM dual-frequency radar system were compared with those calculated from the laser disdrometer observations. The reflectivity observations from the GPM DPR in both the Ku and Ka bands (ZKu and ZKa) were greater than the actual observations, with ZKa displaying a greater degree of overestimation than ZKu. In the applied single-frequency retrieval algorithm (SFA), the rainfall parameters retrieved from the Ka band outperformed those retrieved from the Ku band, indicating that the Ka band has stronger detection capability in the Tianshan Mountains area, where light rain predominates. The dual-frequency ratio (DFR), i.e., the differences in the reflectivity of the raindrop spectra obtained from both the Ku and Ka bands, fluctuated more greatly than those of the GPM DPR. DFR is a monotonically increasing function of the mass-weighted mean drop diameter (Dm). Rainfall rate (R) and Dm exhibited a strong positive correlation, and the fitted curve followed a power function distribution.

Precipitation is the basic component of the Earth's water cycle. Obtaining high-resolution and high-precision precipitation data is of great significance. This paper establishes a precipitation retrieval model based on a random forest classification and regression model during the day and at night with FY-4B/AGRI Level1 data on China from July to August 2022. To evaluate the retrieval effect of the model, the GPM IMERG product is used as a reference, and the retrieval results are compared against those of the FY-4B/AGRI operational precipitation product. In addition, the retrieval results are analyzed according to different underlying surfaces. The results showed that compared with the FY-4B/AGRI operational precipitation product, the retrieval model can better identify precipitation and capture precipitation areas of light rain, moderate rain, heavy rain and torrential rain. Among them, the probability of detection (POD) of the day model increased from 0.328 to 0.680, and the equitable threat score (ETS) increased from 0.252 to 0.432. The POD of the night model increased from 0.337 to 0.639, and the ETS score increased from 0.239 to 0.369. Meanwhile, the precipitation estimation accuracy of the day model increased by 38.98% and that of the night model increased by 40.85%. Our results also showed that due to the surface uniformity of the ocean, the model can identify precipitation better on the ocean than on the land. Our findings also indicated that for the different underlying surfaces of the land, there is no significant difference in each evaluation index of the model. This is a strong argument for the universal applicability of the model. Notably, the results showed that, especially for more vegetated areas and areas covered by water, the model is capable of estimating precipitation. In conclusion, the precipitation retrieval model that is proposed herein can better determine precipitation regions and estimate precipitation intensities compared with the FY-4B/AGRI operational precipitation product.
