Urban green spaces, such as parks, cemeteries, and allotment gardens provide important cooling functions for mitigating the urban heat island (UHI) effect. In the densely populated Ruhr Area (Germany), rehabilitated tailing piles (TPs), as relicts of the coal-mining history, are widespread hill-shaped landscape forms mainly used for local recreation. Their potential role as cooling islands has never been analyzed systematically. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating the TP surface cooling potential compared to other urban green spaces (UGSs). We analyzed the factors controlling the piles' summer land surface temperature (LST) patterns using k-mean clustering and random forest regression modeling. Generally, mean LST values of the TPs were comparable to those of other UGSs in the region. Indices describing vegetation moisture (NDMI), vitality (NDVI), and height (VH) were found to control the LST pattern of the piles during summer. The index for soil moisture (TVDI) was directly related to VH, with the highest values on the north and northeast-facing slopes and lowest on slopes with south and southeast expositions. Terrain attributes such as altitude, slope, aspect, and curvature were of minor relevance in that context, except on TPs exceeding heights of 125 m. In conclusion, we advise urban planners to maintain and improve the benefit of tailing piles as green cooling islands for UHI mitigation. As one measure, the soil's water-holding capacity could be increased through thicker soil covers or soil additives during mine tailing rehabilitation, especially on the piles' south and southeast expositions. Accurate land surface temperature (LST) retrieval from satellite data is pivotal in environmental monitoring and scientific research. This study addresses the impact of variability in the effective wavelengths used for LST retrieval from the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) data of Landsat 8. We conduct a detailed analysis comparing the effective wavelengths reported by Yu et al. (2014) and those derived from data provided by the USGS. Our analysis reveals significant variability in the effective wavelengths for bands 10 and 11 of Landsat 8. By applying Planck's Law and utilizing the K1 and K2 coefficients available in the metadata of Landsat 8 products, we derive the effective wavelengths for bands 10 and 11. We also rederive the effective wavelength by integrating the spectral response function of the TIRS1 sensor. Our findings indicate that the effective wavelength for band 10 is 10.814 μm, aligning with the USGS data, while the effective wavelength for band 11 is 12.013 μm. We discuss the implications of these corrected effective wavelengths on the accuracy of LST retrieval algorithms, particularly the single channel algorithm (SC) and the radiative transfer equation (RT) employed by Yu et al. The importance of using precise effective wavelengths in satellite-based temperature retrieval is emphasized, to ensure the reliability and consistency of results. This analysis underscores the critical role of accurate spectral calibration parameters in remote sensing studies and provides valuable insights in the field of land surface temperature retrieval from Landsat 8 TIRS data. Land surface temperature (LST) serves as a pivotal component within the surface energy cycle, offering fundamental insights for the investigation of agricultural water environment, urban thermal environment, and land planning. However, LST monitoring at a point scale entails substantial costs and poses implementation challenges. Moreover, the existing LST products are constrained by their low spatiotemporal resolution, limiting their broader applicability. The fusion of multi-source remote sensing data offers a viable solution to enhance spatiotemporal resolution. In this study, the Enhanced Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (ESTARFM) was used to estimate time series LST utilizing multi-temporal Landsat 8 (L8) and MOD21A2 within the Haihe basin in 2021. Validation of ESTARFM LST was conducted against L8 LST and in situ LST. The results can be summarized as follows: (1) ESTARFM was found to be effective in heterogeneous regions within the Haihe basin, yielding LST with a spatiotemporal resolution of 30 m and 8 d while retaining clear texture information; (2) the comparison between ESTARFM LST and L8 LST shows a coefficient determination (R2) exceeding 0.59, a mean absolute error (MAE) lower than 2.43 K, and a root mean square error (RMSE) lower than 2.63 K for most dates; (3) comparison between ESTARFM LST and in situ LST showcased high validation accuracy, revealing a R2 of 0.87, a MAE of 2.27 K, and a RMSE of 4.12 K. The estimated time series LST exhibited notable reliability and robustness. This study introduced ESTARFM for LST estimation, achieving satisfactory outcomes. The findings offer a valuable reference for other regions to generate LST data with a spatiotemporal resolution of 8 d and 30 m, thereby enhancing the application of data products in agriculture and hydrology contexts. Forest biomass estimation is undoubtedly one of the most pressing research subjects at present. Combining multi-source remote sensing information can give full play to the advantages of different remote sensing technologies, providing more comprehensive and rich information for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation research. Based on Landsat 8, Sentinel-2A, and ALOS2 PALSAR data, this paper takes the artificial coniferous forests in the Saihanba Forest of Hebei Province as the object of study, fully explores and establishes remote sensing factors and information related to forest structure, gives full play to the advantages of spectral signals in detecting the horizontal structure and multi-dimensional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in detecting the vertical structure, and combines environmental factors to carry out multivariate synergistic methods of estimating the AGB. This paper uses three variable selection methods (Pearson correlation coefficient, random forest significance, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)) to establish the variable sets, combining them with three typical non-parametric models to estimate AGB, namely, random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), to analyze the effect of forest structure on biomass estimation, explore the suitable AGB of artificial coniferous forests estimation of machine learning models, and develop the method of quantifying saturation value of the combined variables. The results show that the horizontal structure is more capable of explaining the AGB compared to the vertical structure information, and that combining the multi-structure information can improve the model results and the saturation value to a great extent. In this study, different sets of variables can produce relatively superior results in different models. The variable set selected using LASSO gives the best results in the SVR model, with an R 2 values of 0.9998 and 0.8792 for the training and the test set, respectively, and the highest saturation value obtained is 185.73 t/ha, which is beyond the range of the measured data. The problem of saturation in biomass estimation in boreal medium- and high-density forests was overcome to a certain extent, and the AGB of the Saihanba area was better estimated. Analysis of land use/land cover (LULC) in catchment areas is the first action toward safeguarding freshwater resources. LULC information in the watershed has gained popularity in the natural science field as it helps water resource managers and environmental health specialists develop natural resource conservation strategies based on available quantitative information. Thus, remote sensing is the cornerstone in addressing environmental-related issues at the catchment level. In this study, the performance of four machine learning algorithms (MLAs), namely Random Forests (RFs), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), and Naïve Bayes (NB), were investigated to classify the catchment into nine relevant classes of the undulating watershed landscape using Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (L8-OLI) imagery. The assessment of the MLAs was based on a visual inspection of the analyst and commonly used assessment metrics, such as user's accuracy (UA), producers' accuracy (PA), overall accuracy (OA), and the kappa coefficient. The MLAs produced good results, where RF (OA = 97.02%, Kappa = 0.96), SVM (OA = 89.74%, Kappa = 0.88), ANN (OA = 87%, Kappa = 0.86), and NB (OA = 68.64%, Kappa = 0.58). The results show the outstanding performance of the RF model over SVM and ANN with a significant margin. While NB yielded satisfactory results, its sensitivity to limited training samples could primarily influence these results. Natural resource managers may utilize remotely sensed data to monitor vegetation within their decision-making frameworks for improving habitats. Under binational agreements between the United States and Mexico, seven reaches were targeted for riparian habitat enhancement. Monitoring was carried out using Landsat 8 16-day intervals of the two-band enhanced vegetation index 2 (EVI2) for greenness and actual evapotranspiration (ETa). In-channel water was delivered in 2021 and 2022 at four places in Reach 4. Three reaches (Reaches 4, 5 and 7) showed no discernable difference in EVI2 from reaches that did not receive in-channel water (Reaches 1, 2, 3 and 6). EVI2 in 2021 was higher than 2020 in all reaches except Reach 3, and EVI2 in 2022 was lower than 2021 in all reaches except Reach 7. ET(EVI2) was higher in 2020 than in 2021 and 2022 in all seven reaches; it was highest in Reach 4 (containing restoration sites) in all years. Excluding restoration sites, compared with 2020, unrestored reaches showed that EVI2 minimally increased in 2021 and 2022, while ET(EVI2) minimally decreased despite added water in 2021–2022. Difference maps comparing 2020 (no-flow year) to 2021 and 2022 (in-channel flows) reveal areas in Reaches 5 and 7 where the in-channel flows increased greenness and ET(EVI2). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, Geoscience Australia has undertaken a successful continental-scale validation program, targeting Landsat and Sentinel analysis-ready data surface reflectance products. The field validation model used for this program was successfully built upon earlier studies, and the measurement uncertainties associated with these protocols have been quantified and published. As a consequence, the Australian earth observation community was well-prepared to respond to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) call for collaborators with the 2021 Landsat 8 (L8) and Landsat 9 (L9) underfly. Despite a number of challenges, seven validation datasets were captured across five sites. As there was only a single 100% overlap transit across Australia, and the country was amidst a strong La Niña climate cycle, it was decided to deploy teams to the two available overpasses with only 15% side lap. The validation sites encompassed rangelands, chenopod shrublands, and a large inland lake. Apart from instrument problems at one site, good weather enabled the capture of high-quality field data allowing for meaningful comparisons between the radiometric performance of L8 and L9, as well as the USGS and Australian Landsat analysis-ready data processing models. Duplicate (cross-calibration) spectral sampling at different sites provides evidence of the field protocol reliability, while the off-nadir view of L9 over the water site has been used to better compare the performance of different water and atmospheric correction processing models. Medium- to high-resolution imagery is indispensable for various applications. Combining images from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 can improve the accuracy of observing dynamic changes on the Earth's surface. Many researchers use Sentinel-2 10 m resolution data in conjunction with Landsat 8 30 m resolution data to generate 10 m resolution data series. However, current fusion techniques have some algorithmic weaknesses, such as simple processing of coarse or fine images, which fail to extract image features to the fullest extent, especially in rapidly changing land cover areas. Facing the aforementioned limitations, we proposed a multiscale and attention mechanism-based residual spatiotemporal fusion network (MARSTFN) that utilizes Sentinel-2 10 m resolution data and Landsat 8 15 m resolution data as auxiliary data to upgrade Landsat 8 30 m resolution data to 10 m resolution. In this network, we utilized multiscale and attention mechanisms to extract features from coarse and fine images separately. Subsequently, the features outputted from all input branches are combined and further feature information is extracted through residual networks and skip connections. Finally, the features obtained from the residual network are merged with the feature information of the coarsely processed images from the multiscale mechanism to generate accurate prediction images. To assess the efficacy of our model, we compared it with existing models on two datasets. Results demonstrated that our fusion model outperformed baseline methods across various evaluation indicators, highlighting its ability to integrate Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data to produce 10 m resolution data. This study proposes a fusion approach to enhancing urban remote sensing applications by integrating SAR (Sentinel-1) and optical (Landsat-8) satellite datasets. The fusion technique combines feature-based fusion and simple layer stacking (SLS) to improve the accuracy of urban impervious surface (UIS) extraction. SAR textures and modified indices are used for feature extraction, and classification is performed using the XGBoost machine learning algorithm in Python and Google Earth Engine. The study focuses on four global cities (New York, Paris, Tokyo, and London) with heterogeneous climatic zones and urban dynamics. The proposed method showed significant results. The accuracy assessment using random validation points shows an overall accuracy of 86% for UIS classification with the SLS method, outperforming single-data classification. The proposed approach achieves higher accuracy (86%) compared to three global products (ESA, ESRI, and Dynamic World). New York exhibits the highest overall accuracy at 88%. This fusion approach with the XGBoost classifier holds potential for new applications and insights into UIS mapping, with implications for environmental factors such as land surface temperature, the urban heat island effect, and urban pluvial flooding. Cuba is struggling with a growing environmental problem: the uncontrolled spread of the allochthonous weed species marabou (Dichrostachys cinerea) throughout the country. Over the last 70 years, marabou has become a formidable invasive species that poses a threat to Cuban biodiversity and agricultural productivity. In this paper, we present a free and affordable method for regularly mapping the spatial distribution of the marabou based on the Google Earth Engine platform and ecological surveys. To test its accuracy, we develop an 18-year remote sensing analysis (2000–2018) of marabou dynamics using the Valle de los Ingenios, a Cuban UNESCO World Heritage Site, as an experimental model. Our spatial analysis reveals clear patterns of marabou distribution and highlights areas of concentrated growth. Temporal trends illustrate the aggressive nature of the species, identifying periods of expansion and decline. In addition, our system is able to detect specific, large-scale human interventions against the marabou plague in the area. The integration of optical and SAR datasets through ensemble machine learning models shows promising results in urban remote sensing applications. The integration of multi-sensor datasets enhances the accuracy of information extraction. This research presents a comparison of two ensemble machine learning classifiers (random forest and extreme gradient boost (XGBoost)) classifiers using an integration of optical and SAR features and simple layer stacking (SLS) techniques. Therefore, Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Landsat 8 (optical) datasets were used with SAR textures and enhanced modified indices to extract features for the year 2023. The classification process utilized two machine learning algorithms, random forest and XGBoost, for urban impervious surface extraction. The study focused on three significant East Asian cities with diverse urban dynamics: Jakarta, Manila, and Seoul. This research proposed a novel index called the Normalized Blue Water Index (NBWI), which distinguishes water from other features and was utilized as an optical feature. Results showed an overall accuracy of 81% for UIS classification using XGBoost and 77% with RF while classifying land use land cover into four major classes (water, vegetation, bare soil, and urban impervious). However, the proposed framework with the XGBoost classifier outperformed the RF algorithm and Dynamic World (DW) data product and comparatively showed higher classification accuracy. Still, all three results show poor separability with bare soil class compared to ground truth data. This paper presents a comprehensive intercomparison study investigating the radiometric performance of and concurrence among the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (L8 OLI), and Landsat 9 OLI (L9 OLI) instruments. This study leverages data sourced from the Radiometric Calibration Network (RadCalNet) and focuses on spectral bands relevant for vegetation analysis and land cover classification, encompassing a thorough assessment of data quality, uncertainties, and underlying influencing factors. This study's outcomes underscore the efficacy of RadCalNet in evaluating the precision and reliability of remote sensing data, offering valuable insights into the strengths and limitations of ASTER, L8 OLI, and L9 OLI. These insights serve as a foundation for informed decision making in environmental monitoring and resource management, highlighting the pivotal role of RadCalNet in gauging the radiometric performance of remote sensing sensors. Results from RadCalNet sites, namely Railroad Valley Playa and Gobabeb, show their possible suitability for sensors with spatial resolutions down to 15 m. The results indicate that the measurements from both ASTER and OLI closely align with the data from RadCalNet, and the observed agreement falls comfortably within the total range of potential errors associated with the sensors and the test site information. Remote sensing technology is widely used to obtain evapotranspiration (ETa), but whether it can distinguish the differences in farmland energy balance components and ETa under different irrigation methods has not been studied. We used Landsat 8 data as the primary dataset to drive the METRIC model and inverted the surface parameters and ETa of the Shiyang River Basin from 2014 to 2018. After improving the METRIC model using Ta obtained by the regression method instead of interpolation to calculate the net radiation flux (Rn), R2 was improved from 0.45 to 0.53, and the RMSE was reduced from 61 W/m2 to 51 W/m2. The ETa estimation results on satellite overpass days performed well, with R2 equal to 0.93 and RMSE equal to 0.48 mm when compared with the Eddy covariance method (EC) observations. Subsequently, the different growth stages and daily average ETa estimates of maize were compared with three observations (water balance, WB; Bowen ratio and energy balance method, BREB; and EC). The daily estimates of ETa correlate well with the observations of BREB (R2BI = 0.82, R2DI = 0.92; RMSEBI = 0.46 mm/day, RMSEDI = 0.32 mm/day) and EC (R2BI = 0.85, R2DI = 0.92; RMSEBI = 0.45 mm/day, RMSEDI = 0.34 mm/day), and the estimation for drip irrigation was found to be better than for border irrigation. The total accuracy of the ETa estimation on the five-year overpass day of maize farmland reached R2 = 0.93 and RMSE = 0.48 mm. With sufficient remote sensing data, the 4-year average ETa of maize was 31 mm lower for DI than for BI, and the mean value of ETa obtained from the three observation methods was 40 mm. Landsat 9 (L9) was launched on 27 September 2021. This spacecraft contained two instruments, the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) and Thermal Infrared Sensor-2 (TIRS-2), that allow for a continuation of the Landsat program and the mission to acquire multi-spectral observations of the globe on a moderate scale. Following a period of commissioning, during which time the spacecraft and instruments were initialized and set up for operations, with the initial calibration performed, the mission moved to an operational mode This operational mode involved the same cadence and methods that were performed for the Landsat 8 (L8) spacecraft and the two instruments onboard, the Operational Land Imager-1 (OLI-1) and Thermal Infrared Sensor-1 (TIRS-1), with respect to calibration, characterization, and validation. This paper discusses the geometric operational aspects of the L9 instruments during the first year of the mission and post-commissioning, and compares these same geometric activities performed for L8 during the same time frame. During this time, optical axes of the two sensors, OLI-1 and OLI-2, were adjusted to stay aligned with the spacecraft's Attitude Control System (ACS), and the TIRS-1 and TIRS-2 instruments were adjusted to stay aligned with the OLI-1 and OLI-2 instruments, respectively. In this paper, the L9 operational adjustments are compared to the same operational aspects of L8 during this same time frame. The comparisons shown in this paper will demonstrate that both instruments aboard L8 and L9 performed very similar geometric qualities while fully meeting the expected requirements. This paper describes the geometric differences between the L9 imagery that was made available to the public prior to the reprocessing campaign that was performed using the new calibration updates to the sensor and to ACS and TIRS-to-OLI alignment parameters. Combining images from multiple Earth Observing (EO) satellites increases the temporal resolution of the data, overcoming the limitations imposed by low revisit time and cloud coverage. However, this requires an intercalibration process to ensure that there is no radiometric difference in top-of-atmosphere (TOA) observations or to quantify any offset in the respective instruments. In addition, combining vicarious calibration processes to the intercalibration of instruments can provide a useful mechanism to validate and compare data from multiple sensors. The Radiometric Calibration Network (RadCalNet) provides automated surface and top-of-atmosphere reflectance data from multiple participating ground sites that can be used for instrument vicarious calibration. We present a comparative analysis of the Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 Operational Land Imagers (OLI) sensors and validate the data by comparing them to measurements from RadCalNet sites as a quantitative intercalibration approach. RadCalNet serves as a common reference for instrument radiometric calibration, providing SI-traceable TOA reflectance with its associated absolute uncertainties. This paper discusses the method of combining data from multiple sites and calculating the weighted average by comparing the TOA reflectance of the instruments and their associated uncertainties. The presented process provides a SI-traceable intercalibration methodology and quantifies the offset and uncertainty in the Landsat 8 and 9 OLI instruments, demonstrating that the two instruments are in good agreement with each other and the data can be reliably cross-correlated and used by the scientific community. The cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera, Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) poses significant risks to maize. Changes in the maize plant, such as its phenology, influence the short-distance movement and oviposition of cotton bollworm adults and, thus, the distribution of the subsequent larval damage. We aim to provide an overview of future approaches to the surveillance of maize ear damage by cotton bollworm larvae based on remote sensing. We focus on finding a near-optimal combination of Landsat 8 or Sentinel-2 spectral bands, vegetation indices, and maize phenology to achieve the best predictions. The study areas were 21 sweet and grain maze fields in Hungary in 2017, 2020, and 2021. Correlations among the percentage of damage and the time series of satellite images were explored. Based on our results, Sentinel-2 satellite imagery is suggested for damage surveillance, as 82% of all the extremes of the correlation coefficients were stronger, and this satellite provided 20–64% more cloud-free images. We identified that the maturity groups of maize are an essential factor in cotton bollworm surveillance. No correlations were found before canopy closure (BBCH 18). Visible bands were the most suitable for damage surveillance in mid–late grain maize (|rmedian| = 0.49–0.51), while the SWIR bands, NDWI, NDVI, and PSRI were suitable in mid–late grain maize fields (|rmedian| = 0.25–0.49) and sweet maize fields (|rmedian| = 0.24–0.41). Satellite sensors like Landsat 8 OLI (L8) and Sentinel-2 MSI (S2) provide valuable multispectral Earth observations that differ in spatial resolution and spectral bands, limiting synergistic use. L8 has a 30 m resolution and a lower revisit frequency, while S2 offers up to a 10 m resolution and more spectral bands, such as red edge bands. Translating observations from L8 to S2 can increase data availability by combining their images to leverage the unique strengths of each product. In this study, a conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) is developed to perform sensor-specific domain translation focused on green, near-infrared (NIR), and red edge bands. The models were trained on the pairs of co-located L8-S2 imagery from multiple locations. The CGAN aims to downscale 30 m L8 bands to 10 m S2-like green and 20 m S2-like NIR and red edge bands. Two translation methodologies are employed—direct single-step translation from L8 to S2 and indirect multistep translation. The direct approach involves predicting the S2-like bands in a single step from L8 bands. The multistep approach uses two steps—the initial model predicts the corresponding S2-like band that is available in L8, and then the final model predicts the unavailable S2-like red edge bands from the S2-like band predicted in the first step. Quantitative evaluation reveals that both approaches result in lower spectral distortion and higher spatial correlation compared to native L8 bands. Qualitative analysis supports the superior fidelity and robustness achieved through multistep translation. By translating L8 bands to higher spatial and spectral S2-like imagery, this work increases data availability for improved earth monitoring. Various physical characteristics of urban impervious surfaces (ISAs) and urban green spaces (UGSs) collectively regulate environmental temperatures through heating and cooling processes. However, current research often analyzes each regulating factor as an independent variable when examining its relationship with land surface temperature (LST), with limited studies considering the combined contribution weights of all regulating factors. Based on multi-source remote sensing data and ground observations from the near summers of 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018 in the built-up area of Xuzhou City, numerical values and spatial distributions of 15 regulating factors, including ISA density (fi), land surface albedo (Albedo), population density (Population), anthropogenic heat flux (AHF), maximum ISA patch index (LPIISA), natural connectivity of ISA patches (COHESIONISA), aggregation index of ISA patches (AIISA), average shape index of ISA patches (SHAPE_MNISA), UGS density (fv), evapotranspiration (ET), UGS shading index (UGSSI), maximum UGS patch index (LPIUGS), natural connectivity of UGS patches (COHESIONUGS), aggregation index of UGS patches (AIUGS), and average shape index of UGS patches (SHAPE_MNUGS), were separately extracted within the study area. Using geographically weighted regression models and bivariate spatial autocorrelation models, we separately obtained the quantitative and spatial correlations between the 15 regulating factors and LST. The results revealed that all selected regulating factors exhibited high goodness-of-fit and significant spatial correlations with LST, which led to their categorization into eight warming factors and seven cooling factors. The factor detection of the Geographic Detector further reveals the combined contribution of all regulating factors to LST. The results indicate that cooling factors collectively have higher explanatory power for LST compared to warming factors, with UGSSI contributing the most to LST, while Population contributed the least. Furthermore, the interaction detection results of the Geographic Detector have highlighted variations in the explanatory power of different factor combinations on LST. Ultimately, it has identified factor combinations that have proven to be most effective in mitigating the urban heat environment across three scenarios: warming factors alone, cooling factors alone, and a combination of both warming and cooling factors. The suggested factor combinations are as follows: fi ∩ Albedo, fi ∩ LPIISA, UGSSI ∩ fv, UGSSI ∩ LPIUGS, fi ∩ UGSSI, and Albedo ∩ UGSSI. In order to evaluate forest quality and carbon stocks and improve our understanding of ecosystems and carbon cycling processes, the accurate measurement of aboveground biomass (AGB) and other forest characteristics is crucial. This paper considers the response differences between the bands obtained from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2A sensors, respectively, and combines the exhaustive combination of spectral indices with normalization and ratio techniques to establish suitable weights for the bands in the vegetation index using relative sensitivity and noise equivalent (NE) to improve the saturation effect between the vegetation index and forest parameters (canopy closure (CC), forest stand density (S), basal area (BA), and AGB) and extend the linear relationship between them. This paper also considers the effects of window size, direction, and principal component analysis on texture features, adds weight to textures and combines textures using linear correlation and NE, establishes texture indices to improve the limitations of information contained in individual texture features, analyzes the potential of texture features to evaluate each forest parameter under different conditions, and better captures the variation of forest parameters. In this paper, we only analyze the planted coniferous forest in Saihanba to avoid the differences in electromagnetic wave effects that are difficult to judge and analyze because of the differences in leaf size and leaf orientation between coniferous and broad-leaf forests. In contrast, the vegetation indices and texture indices obtained from Sentinel-2A could better estimate each vegetation parameter, and the linear estimation of each vegetation parameter using the new texture index reached an R 2 above 0.65. The results of this study indicate that Sentinel-2A and Landsat 8 are promising remote sensing datasets for estimating vegetation parameters at the regional scale, and Sentinel-2A data can be employed as the primary source of earth observation data for assessing forest resources in the Saihanba area. Currently, climate change requires the quantification of carbon stored in forest biomass. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data offers a significant advantage over other remote detection measurement methods in providing structural and biomass-related information about ecosystems. This study aimed to develop non-parametric Random Forest regression models to assess the changes in the aboveground forest biomass (AGB), basal area (G), and tree density (N) of Mediterranean pine forests by integrating ALOS-PALSAR, Sentinel 1, and Landsat 8 data. Variables selected from the Random Forest models were related to NDVI and optical textural variables. For 2015, the biomass models with the highest performance integrated ALS-ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 data (R2 = 0.59) by following the model using ALS data (R2 = 0.56), and ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 (R2 = 0.50). The validation set showed that R2 values vary from 0.55 (ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8) to 0.60 (ALS-ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 model) with RMSE below 20 Mg ha−1. It is noteworthy that the individual Sentinel 1 (R2 = 0.49). and Landsat 8 (R2 = 0.47) models yielded equivalent results. For 2020, the AGB model ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 had a performance of R2 = 0.55 (validation R2 = 0.70) and a RMSE of 9.93 Mg ha−1. For the 2015 forest structural variables, Random Forest models, including ALOS PAL-SAR 2-Sentinel 1 Landsat 8 explained between 30% and 55% of the total variance, and for the 2020 models, they explained between 25% and 55%. Maps of the forests' structural variables were generated for 2015 and 2020 to assess the changes during this period using the ALOS PALSAR 2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 model. Aboveground biomass (AGB), diameter at breast height (dbh), and dominant height (Ho) maps were consistent throughout the entire study area. However, the Random Forest models underestimated higher biomass levels (>100 Mg ha−1) and overestimated moderate biomass levels (30–45 Mg ha−1). The AGB change map showed values ranging from gains of 43.3 Mg ha−1 to losses of −68.8 Mg ha−1 during the study period. The present study links monitoring and simulation models to predict water quality distribution in lakes using an optimized neural network and remote sensing data processing. Two data driven models were developed. First, a monitoring model was established that is able to convert spectral images to TDS distribution. Moreover, a simulation model was developed to generate a TDS distribution map for unseen scenarios for which no spectral images are available. Outputs of the monitoring model were applied as the observations for training the simulation model. The Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE) was utilized in the system performance measurement of the models. Based on the results in the case study, the monitoring model was sufficiently robust to convert the operational land imager spectral bands of Landsat 8 to the TDS distribution map. The NSE was more than 0.6 for the monitoring model, which confirms the predictive skills of the model. Furthermore, the simulation model was highly reliable in generating the TDS distribution map of the lakes. Three tests were carried out to demonstrate the reliability of the model. When comparing the results of the monitoring model and simulation model, an NSE of more than 0.6 was found for all the tests. It is recommendable to apply the proposed method instead of conventional hydrodynamic models that might be highly time consuming for simulating water quality parameters distribution in lakes. Analysis of the spatial and temporal variation patterns of surface evapotranspiration is important for understanding global climate change, promoting scientific deployment of regional water resources, and improving crop yield and water productivity. Based on Landsat 8 OIL_TIRS data and remote sensing image data of the lower Yangtze River urban cluster for the same period of 2016–2021, combined with soil and meteorological data of the study area, this paper constructed a multiple linear regression (MLR) model and an extreme learning machine (ELM) inversion model with evapotranspiration as the target and, based on the model inversion, quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed the spatial and temporal variability in surface evapotranspiration in the study area in the past six years. The results show that both models based on feature factors and spectral indices obtained a good inversion accuracy, with the fusion of feature factors effectively improving the inversion ability of the model for ET. The best model for ET in 2016, 2017, and 2021 was MLR, with an R2 greater than 0.8; the best model for ET in 2018–2019 was ELM, with an R2 of 0.83 and 0.62, respectively. The inter-annual ET in the study area showed a "double-peak" dynamic variation, with peaks in 2018 and 2020; the intra-annual ET showed a single-peak cycle, with peaks in July–August. Seasonal differences were obvious, and spatially high-ET areas were mainly found in rural areas north of the Yangtze River and central and western China where agricultural land is concentrated. The net solar radiation, soil heat flux, soil temperature and humidity, and fractional vegetation cover all had significant positive effects on ET, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.39 to 0.94. Satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) is the process of estimating water depth in shallow coastal and inland waters using satellite imagery. Recent advances in technology and data processing have led to improvements in the accuracy and availability of SDB. The increased availability of free optical satellite sensors, such as Landsat missions and Sentinel 2 satellites, has increased the quantity and frequency of SDB research and mapping efforts. In addition, machine learning (ML)- and deep learning (DL)-based algorithms, which can learn to identify features that are indicative of water depth, such as color or texture variations, have started to be used for extracting bathymetry information from satellite imagery. This study aims to produce an initial optical image-based SBD map of Horseshoe Island's shallow coasts and to perform a comprehensive and comparative evaluation with Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 satellite images. Our research considers the performance of empirical SDB models (classical, ML-based, and DL-based) and the effects of the atmospheric correction methods ACOLITE, iCOR, and ATCOR. For all band combinations and depth intervals, the ML-based random forest and XGBoost models delivered the highest performance and best fitting ability by achieving the lowest error with MAEs smaller than 1 m up to 10 m depth and a maximum correlation of R2 around 0.80. These models are followed by the DL-based ANN and CNN models. Nonetheless, the non-linearity of the reflectance–depth connection was significantly reduced by the ML-based models. Furthermore, Landsat 8 showed better performance for 10–20 m depth intervals and in the entire range of (0–20 m), while Sentinel 2 was slightly better up to 10 m depth intervals. This paper evaluates the Arable Mark 2 sensor, an automated and low-cost radiometer, for its potential to retrieve surface reflectance data and validate orbital sensors such as the Landsat-8 (L8) Operational Land Imager (OLI) Level 2 product. While orbital sensors are widely used for monitoring solar radiation changes, managing natural resources, and understanding climatic trends, atmospheric effects can make it challenging to obtain accurate measurements. Equipped with multiple sensors, including long-wave and short-wave radiometers, the Arable Mark 2 sensor can measure upwelling and downwelling irradiance to calculate surface reflectance. To assess the accuracy and consistency of the Arable Mark 2 sensor, the study performed a cross-calibration using a ground truth measurement collected with the Analytical Spectral Device (ASD) as the reference point. Additionally, a spectral band adjustment factor (SBAF) was applied across the calibrated Arable surface reflectance to compare it against the orbital sensor. An automated library aided in calculating SBAF for the days with unavailable hyperspectral data. The study found that the Arable Mark 2 sensor can provide accurate surface reflectance data that can be used for orbital sensor validation. The Arable sensor was successfully calibrated against the ASD FieldSpec with an average difference of less than 1/10 reflectance unit (reflectance unit = 0.01) for the blue, green, yellow, and red bands. The red-edge and NIR-1 bands showed an average difference of less than 1/2 reflectance units, while the NIR-2 band had an average difference of less than 1/10 reflectance unit of calibration accuracy. The calibrated Arable surface reflectance data was then compared against orbital sensor surface reflectance data, and the results showed good agreement between the two datasets. The study concludes that the low-cost and automated nature of the Arable Mark 2 sensor makes it a promising tool for surface reflectance retrieval and orbital sensor validation. Urban green space takes a dominant role in alleviating the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Most investigations into the effects of cooling factors from urban green spaces on the UHI have evaluated the correlation between each factor and land surface temperature (LST) separately, and the contribution weights of various typical cooling factors in mitigating the thermal environment have rarely been analyzed. For this research, three periods of Landsat 8 data captured between 2014 and 2018 of Xuzhou during the summer and autumn seasons were selected along with corresponding meteorological and flux measurements. The mono-window method was employed to retrieve LST. Based on the characteristics of the vegetation and spatial features of the green space, eight factors related to green space were selected and computed, consisting of three indices that measure vegetation and five metrics that evaluate landscape patterns: vegetation density (VD), evapotranspiration (ET), green space shading degree (GSSD), patch area ratio (PLAND), largest patch index (LPI), patch natural connectivity (COHESION), patch aggregation (AI), and patch mean shape index distribution (SHPAE_MN). Linear regression and bivariate spatial autocorrelation analyses between each green space factor and LST showed that there were significant negative linear and spatial correlations between all factors and LST, which proved that the eight factors were all cooling factors. In addition, LST was strongly correlated with all factors (|r| > 0.5) except for SHPAE_MN, which was moderately correlated (0.3 < |r| < 0.5). Based on this, two principal components were extracted by applying principal component analysis with all standardized green space factors as the original variables. To determine the contribution weight of each green space factor in mitigating the urban heat island (UHI) effect, we multiplied the influence coefficient matrix of the initial variables with the standardized multiple linear regression coefficients between the two principal component variables and LST. The final results indicated that the vegetation indices of green space contribute more to the alleviation of the UHI than its landscape pattern metrics, and the contribution weights are ranked as VD ≥ ET > GSSD > PLAND ≈ LPI > COHESION > AI > SHAPE_MN. Our study suggests that increasing vegetation density is preferred in urban planning to mitigate urban thermal environment, and increasing broadleaf forests with high evapotranspiration and shade levels in urban greening is also an effective way to reduce ambient temperature. For urban green space planning, a priority is to multiply the regional green space proportion or the area of largest patches. Second, improving the connectivity or aggregation among patches of green space can enhance their ability to cool the surrounding environment. Multispectral images accessible free of charge have increased significantly from the acquisitions by the wide-field-of-view (WFV) sensors onboard Gaofen-1/-6 (GF-1/-6), the Operational Land Imager (OLI) onboard Landsat 8 (L8), and the Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) onboard Sentinel-2 (S2). These images with medium spatial resolutions are beneficial for land-cover mapping to monitor local to global surface dynamics. Comparative analyses of the four sensors in classification were made under different scenarios with five classifiers, mainly based on the simulated multispectral reflectance from well-processed hyperspectral data. With channel reflectance, differences in classification between the L8 OLI and the S2 MSI were generally dependent on the classifier considered, although the two sensors performed similarly. Meanwhile, without channels over the shortwave infrared region, the GF-1/-6 WFVs showed inferior performances. With channel reflectance, the support vector machine (SVM) with Gaussian kernel generally outperformed other classifiers. With the SVM, on average, the GF-1/-6 WFVs and the L8 OLI had great increases (more than 15%) in overall accuracy relative to using the maximum likelihood classifier (MLC), whereas the overall accuracy improvement was about 13% for the S2 MSI. Both SVM and random forest (RF) had greater overall accuracy, which partially solved the problems of imperfect channel settings. However, under the scenario with a small number of training samples, for the GF-1/-6 WFVs, the MLC showed approximate or even better performance compared to RF. Since several factors possibly influence a classifier's performance, attention should be paid to a comparison and selection of methods. These findings were based on the simulated multispectral reflectance with focusing on spectral channel (i.e., number of channels, spectral range of the channel, and spectral response function), whereas spatial resolution and radiometric quantization were not considered. Furthermore, a limitation of this paper was largely associated with the limited spatial coverage. More case studies should be carried out with real images over areas with different geographical and environmental backgrounds. Rapid and accurate identification of mangroves using remote sensing images is of great significance for assisting ecological conservation efforts in coastal zones. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, deep learning methods have been successfully applied to a variety of fields. However, few studies have applied deep learning methods to the automatic detection of mangroves and few scholars have used medium-resolution Landsat images for large-scale mangrove identification. In this study, cloud-free Landsat 8 OLI imagery of the Indus Delta was acquired using the GEE platform, and NDVI and land use data were used to produce integrated labels to reduce the complexity and subjectivity of manually labeled samples. We proposed the use of MSNet, a semantic segmentation model fusing multiple-scale features, for mangrove extraction in the Indus Delta, and compared the performance of the MSNet model with three other semantic segmentation models, FCN-8s, SegNet, and U-Net. The overall performance ranking of the deep learning methods was MSNet > U-Net > SegNet > FCN-8s. The parallel-structured MSNet model was easy to train, had the fewest parameters and the highest validation accuracy, and provided the best results for the extraction of mangrove pixels with weak features. The MSNet model not only maintains the high-resolution features of the image and fully learns the pixels with weak features during the training process but also fuses the multiple-scale underlying features at different scales to enhance the semantic information and improve the accuracy of feature recognition and segmentation localization. Finally, the areas covered by mangroves in the Indus Delta in 2014 and 2022 were extracted using the best-performing MSNet. The statistics show an increase in mangrove-covered areas in the Indus Delta between 2014 and 2022, with a reduction of 44.37 km2, an increase of 170.48 km2, and a net increase of 126.11 km2. The increasing availability and variety of global satellite products and the rapid development of new algorithms has provided great potential to generate a new level of data with different spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions. However, the ability of these synthetic spatiotemporal datasets to accurately map and monitor our planet on a field or regional scale remains underexplored. This study aimed to support future research efforts in estimating crop yields by identifying the optimal spatial (10 m, 30 m, or 250 m) and temporal (8 or 16 days) resolutions on a regional scale. The current study explored and discussed the suitability of four different synthetic (Landsat (L)-MOD13Q1 (30 m, 8 and 16 days) and Sentinel-2 (S)-MOD13Q1 (10 m, 8 and 16 days)) and two real (MOD13Q1 (250 m, 8 and 16 days)) NDVI products combined separately to two widely used crop growth models (CGMs) (World Food Studies (WOFOST), and the semi-empiric Light Use Efficiency approach (LUE)) for winter wheat (WW) and oil seed rape (OSR) yield forecasts in Bavaria (70,550 km2) for the year 2019. For WW and OSR, the synthetic products' high spatial and temporal resolution resulted in higher yield accuracies using LUE and WOFOST. The observations of high temporal resolution (8-day) products of both S-MOD13Q1 and L-MOD13Q1 played a significant role in accurately measuring the yield of WW and OSR. For example, L- and S-MOD13Q1 resulted in an R2 = 0.82 and 0.85, RMSE = 5.46 and 5.01 dt/ha for WW, R2 = 0.89 and 0.82, and RMSE = 2.23 and 2.11 dt/ha for OSR using the LUE model, respectively. Similarly, for the 8- and 16-day products, the simple LUE model (R2 = 0.77 and relative RMSE (RRMSE) = 8.17%) required fewer input parameters to simulate crop yield and was highly accurate, reliable, and more precise than the complex WOFOST model (R2 = 0.66 and RRMSE = 11.35%) with higher input parameters. Conclusively, both S-MOD13Q1 and L-MOD13Q1, in combination with LUE, were more prominent for predicting crop yields on a regional scale than the 16-day products; however, L-MOD13Q1 was advantageous for generating and exploring the long-term yield time series due to the availability of Landsat data since 1982, with a maximum resolution of 30 m. A stable and reliable cloud detection algorithm is an important step of optical satellite data preprocessing. Existing threshold methods are mostly based on classifying spectral features of isolated individual pixels and do not contain or incorporate the spatial information. This often leads to misclassifications of bright surfaces, such as human-made structures or snow/ice. Multi-temporal methods can alleviate this problem, but cloud-free images of the scene are difficult to obtain. To deal with this issue, we extended four deep-learning Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models to improve the global cloud detection accuracy for Landsat imagery. The inputs are simplified as all discrete spectral channels from visible to short wave infrared wavelengths through radiometric calibration, and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) global Landsat 8 Biome cloud-cover assessment dataset is randomly divided for model training and validation independently. Experiments demonstrate that the cloud mask of the extended U-net model (i.e., UNmask) yields the best performance among all the models in estimating the cloud amounts (cloud amount difference, CAD = −0.35%) and capturing the cloud distributions (overall accuracy = 94.9%) for Landsat 8 imagery compared with the real validation masks; in particular, it runs fast and only takes about 41 ± 5.5 s for each scene. Our model can also actually detect broken and thin clouds over both dark and bright surfaces (e.g., urban and barren). Last, the UNmask model trained for Landsat 8 imagery is successfully applied in cloud detections for the Sentinel-2 imagery (overall accuracy = 90.1%) via transfer learning. Recent global warming has led to increased coastal disturbances through a significant transfer of heat between the land and the ocean surface. The polar regions show excessive temperature changes resulting in massive ice sheet melting. Mid-latitudinal storms pull heat away from the equator towards the poles; therefore, the global sea level is rising, making coastal cities the most vulnerable. In last few decades, rapid urbanization in big cities has drastically changed the land cover and land use due to deforestation, which has led to increased land surface temperatures (LSTs). This eventually leads to urban flooding due to oceanic storm surges frequently created by low pressure over the ocean during summer. This paper considered factors such as drastic unplanned urbanization to analyze coastal cities as the focal point of the generation of heat yielding the annihilation of the natural topography. Urban heat pockets (UHP) were studied for nine megacities, which were selected at an interval of 5° of latitudinal difference in the northern hemisphere (NH) since 70% of densely populated megacities are located in coastal regions. A comparative surface temperature analysis was effectively carried out with the same latitudinal reference for nine mid-sized cities using the derived LST data from Landsat 8. The results provide a comparative classification of surface temperature variations across the coastal cities over the NH. This study infers that the issues pertaining to growing urbanization are very important for analyzing the proportional impact caused by the settlement hierarchy and lays a robust foundation for advanced studies of global warming in coastal urban environments. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in 1979, due to the high environmental and public health risks with which they are associated. However, PCBs continue to persist in the San Francisco Bay (SFB), often at concentrations deemed unsafe for humans. In situ PCB monitoring within the SFB is extremely limited, due in large part to the high monetary costs associated with sampling. Here we offer a cost effective alternative to in situ PCB monitoring by demonstrating the feasibility of indirectly quantifying PCBs in the SFB via satellite remote sensing using a two-step approach. First, we determined the relationship between in situ PCB concentrations and suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) in the SFB. We then correlated in situ SSC with spatially and temporally consistent Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2A reflectances. We demonstrate strong relationships between SSC and PCBs in all three SFB sub-embayments (R2 > 0.28–0.80, p < 0.01), as well as a robust relationship between SSC and satellite measurements for both Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2A (R2 > 0.72, p < 0.01). These relationships held regardless of the atmospheric correction regime that we applied. The end product of these relationships is an empirical two-step relationship capable of deriving PCBs from satellite imagery. Our approach of estimating PCBs in the SFB by remotely sensing SSC is extremely cost-effective when compared to traditional in situ techniques. Moreover, it can also be utilized to generate PCB concentration maps for the SFB. These maps could one day serve as an important tool for PCB remediation in the SFB, as they can provide valuable insight into the spatial distribution of PCBs throughout the bay, as well as how this distribution changes over time.

Marine dynamic disasters, such as storm surges and huge waves, can cause large economic and human losses. The assessment of marine dynamic disasters is, thus, important, but improvements to its reliability are needed. The current study improved and integrated the assessment from the perspective of multi-factor coupling. Using a weighted index system, a marine dynamic disaster assessment indicator system suitable for China's coastal waters was established, and a method for calculating the weight of disaster indicators was proposed from the perspective of rapid assessment. To reduce the assessment deviation in coastal waters, a multi-factor coupling algorithm was proposed. This algorithm obtained amplitude variations of wave orbital motion in horizontal and vertical directions, which was used to evaluate the influence of background current and terrain slope on coastal ocean waves. Landsat 8 remote sensing images were used to carry out an object-oriented extraction of raft and cage aquaculture areas in China's coastal waters. The aquaculture density was then used as the main basis for a vulnerability assessment. Finally, the whole assessment system was integrated and verified during a typical storm surge process in coastal waters around the Shandong Peninsula in China. Pistachio is an important economic crop in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran. A major problem leading to a reduction in crop quality and reduced marketability is extreme air temperature in summer, which causes sunburn of pistachio leaves and fruit. A solution proposed to deal with the negative effects of high temperatures and increase water consumption efficiency in pistachio orchards is use of light-reflecting compounds. This study investigated the effect of foliar application of gypsum, sulfur, and NAX-95 (calcium-based suspension coating) to trees in a pistachio orchard (150 ha) in central Iran. The effect of these foliar products is assessed at plot scale, using control plots sprayed with calcium sulfate, based on temperature and evapotranspiration changes analyzed through remote sensing. Landsat 8 sensor images and RGB images collected by UAVs (spatial resolution of 30 m and 20 cm, respectively), on the same dates, before and after foliar spray application, were merged using the PCA method and bilinear interpolation re-sampling. Land surface temperature (LST) was then estimated using the split-window algorithm, and daily evapotranspiration using the surface energy balance algorithm for land (SEBAL) algorithm. A land use map was prepared and used to isolate pistachio trees in the field and assess weed cover, whose effect was not accounted. The results showed that temperature remained constant in the control plot between the spraying dates, indicating no environmental changes. In the main plots, gypsum had the greatest effect in reducing the temperature of pistachio trees. The plots with foliar spraying with gypsum displayed a mean tree temperature (47–48 °C) decrease of 3.3 °C in comparison with the control plots (>49 °C), leading to an average decline in evapotranspiration of 0.18 mm/day. NAX-95 and sulfur reduced tree temperature by on average 1.3 °C and 0.6 °C, respectively. The MODIS 8-day composite evapotranspiration (ET) product (MOD16A2) is widely used to study large-scale hydrological cycle and energy budgets. However, the MOD16A2 spatial resolution (500 m) is too coarse for local and regional water resource management in agricultural applications. In this study, we propose a Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based MOD16A2 downscaling approach to generate 30 m ET using Landsat 8 surface reflectance and temperature and AgERA5 meteorological variables. The model was trained at a 500 m resolution using the MOD16A2 ET as reference and applied to the Landsat 8 30 m resolution. The approach was tested on 15 Landsat 8 images over three agricultural study sites in the United States and compared with the classical random forest regression model that has been often used for ET downscaling. All evaluation sample sets applied to the DNN regression model had higher R2 and lower root-mean-square deviations (RMSD) and relative RMSD (rRMSD) (the average values: 0.67, 2.63 mm/8d and 14.25%, respectively) than the random forest model (0.64, 2.76 mm/8d and 14.92%, respectively). Spatial improvement was visually evident both in the DNN and the random forest downscaled 30 m ET maps compared with the 500 m MOD16A2, while the DNN-downscaled ET appeared more consistent with land surface cover variations. Comparison with the in situ ET measurements (AmeriFlux) showed that the DNN-downscaled ET had better accuracy, with R2 of 0.73, RMSD of 5.99 mm/8d and rRMSD of 48.65%, than the MOD16A2 ET (0.65, 7.18 and 50.42%, respectively). The landscape patterns of urban green spaces have been proven to be important factors that affect urban thermal environments. However, the spatial effect of the landscape patterns of urban patches with different vegetation densities on land surface temperature (LST) has not been investigated in detail. In this study, the built-up area of Xuzhou City was taken as the study region, and the four phases of Landsat 8 images and their corresponding ground observations from 2014 to 2020 were selected as the basic data. Normalized spectral mixture analysis and an improved mono-window algorithm were used to invert the vegetation component fraction (VF) and LST maps of the study area, respectively, and the surface patches were classified into five levels according to the VF values, from low to high. Four landscape-level and five class-level metrics were then selected to represent the landscape characteristics of each VF-level patch. The tested values of 60 and 780 m were regarded as the best grain size and spatial extent, respectively, in the calculation of all landscape metrics of ALL VF-level patches (VFLM) using the moving-window method. The results of bivariate Moran's I for VFLM and LST showed the following: (1) for landscape-level metrics, only the Shannon diversity index and patch diversity have substantial negative spatial correlations with LST (with average |Moran's I| < 0.2), indicating that the types of VF levels and the number of patches exert weak negative effects on the thermal environment for a certain area; (2) for class-level metrics such as percentage of landscape, patch cohesion index, largest patch index, landscape shape index, and aggregation index, only the class-level metrics of sub-high VF (LV4) and extreme-high (LV5) VF levels patches have significant negative spatial correlations with LST (with high Moran's I value, and high–high and low–high distributions in local indications of spatial association cluster maps), indicating that only the patches of high VF levels can effectively alleviate LST and that patch proportion, natural connectivity degree, predominance degree, shape complexity, and aggregation degree are important landscape factors for regulating the thermal environment. Principal component analysis and multiple linear regression were applied to determine the impact weights of the class-level VFLMs of LV4 and LV5 patches on LST, which revealed the contributions of these landscape metrics to mitigating the urban heat island effect (UHI). These results signify the importance of and differences in the spatial patterns of various VF-level patches for UHI regulation; these patterns can provide new perspectives and references for urban green space planning and climate management. Forests are an essential part of the ecosystem and play an irreplaceable role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem and protecting biodiversity. The monitoring of forest distribution plays an important role in the conservation and management of forests. This paper analyzes and compares the performance of imagery from GF-1 WFV, Landsat 8, and Sentinel-2 satellites with respect to forest/non-forest classification tasks using the random forest algorithm (RF). The results show that in the classification task of this paper, although the differences in classification accuracy among the three satellite datasets are not remarkable, the Sentinel-2 data have the highest accuracy, GF-1 WFV the second highest, and Landsat 8 the lowest. In addition, it was found that remotely sensed data of different processing levels show little influence on the classification accuracy with respect to the forest/non-forest classification task. However, the classification accuracy of the top of the atmosphere reflectance product was the most stable, and the vegetation index has a marginal effect on the distinction between forest and non-forest areas. Many species of shorebirds migrate long distances from their overwintering grounds in the southern hemisphere to breeding grounds in the northern hemisphere. The coastal intertidal zone, consisting of sand and mud flats exposed at low tide and covered at high tide, is heavily used as a migratory stopover or overwintering habitat. Understanding the spatial distribution of sediment types at these stopover sites is a critical step for understanding habitat use by shorebird species. Due to their importance as overwintering and stopover habitat for the imperiled western Atlantic subpopulation of the shorebird, the red knot (Calidris canutus rufa), as well as other migratory shorebirds, the northern coast of Brazil between Pará and Maranhão, and Bahía Lomas in northern Tierra del Fuego, Chile, were selected for further investigation as to the applicability of remotely sensed characterization of the intertidal flat habitats. Examination of the Landsat 8 multispectral reflectance and Sentinel-1 SAR backscatter reveals that sand and mud represent endmembers at opposite ends of a continuous gradient in feature space. While remotely sensed data can be used to discriminate between mud and sand intertidal types, the spectral relationships varied between the two very different geographic locations. The inclusion of both multispectral and radar sensing imagery can lead to important insights about the physical properties of the sediment that would be omitted by using one data source alone. Spectral unmixing techniques in Google Earth Engine were used to map the intertidal zone into general sediment classes spanning the gradient (i.e., mud, sandy mud, muddy sand, and sand). Comparison of the mapped outputs with field reference data suggests that mapping of mud- vs. sand-dominated areas can be accomplished with reasonable accuracy (overall accuracy of 75%). Sun glint, i.e., direct solar radiation reflected from a water surface, negatively affects the accuracy of ocean color retrieval schemes if entering the field-of-view of the observing instrument. Herein, a simple and robust method to quantify the sun glint contribution to top-of-atmosphere reflectances in the visible and near-infrared is proposed, exploiting concomitant observations of the sun glint's morphology in the shortwave infrared. The method, termed Glint Removal through Contrast Minimization (GRCM), requires high spatial resolution (ca. 10–50 m) imagery to resolve the sun glint's characteristic morphology, meeting additional criteria on radiometric resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and temporal delay between the individual band's acquisitions. It has been applied with good success to a selection of cloud-free Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) scenes, otherwise encompassing a wide range of environmental conditions in terms of observation geometry, glint intensity, water types, as well as aerosol and Rayleigh optical depths. GRCM is entirely image based and does not require ancillary information on the sea surface roughness or related parameters (e.g., surface wind), nor the presence of homogeneous clear water areas in the image under consideration. Thermal infrared (TIR) satellite imagery collected by multispectral scanners is important to map land surface temperature on a global scale. However, the TIR spectral bands are typically available in coarser spatial resolution than other multispectral bands of shorter wavelengths. Therefore, the spatial resolution of the derived land surface temperature (LST) is limited to around 100 m. This constrains the applications of such thermal satellite sensors in which finer detail of LST spatial pattern is relevant, especially in an urban environment where the land cover structure is complex. Among the missions deployed on the Earth's orbit, NASA's TIRS sensor onboard Landsat 8 and Landsat 9, and ASTER onboard Terra provide the highest spatial resolution of the thermal band. On the other hand, ESA's Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery is collected at a higher spatial resolution of 10 m with a 5-day temporal resolution, but scanning in the TIR band is not available. This study makes use of the known relationship between LST and land cover metrics, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), built-up index (NDBI), and water index (NDWI). We define a multiple linear regression model based on the spectral indices and LST derived from Landsat 8 data to inform the same model in which the equivalent spectral indices derived from Sentinel-2 are used to predict LST at 10 m resolution. Results of this approach are demonstrated in a case study for Košice city, Slovakia, where the multiple linear model based on Landsat 8 data achieved an R2 of 0.642. The correlation between the observed Landsat 8 LST and predicted LST from Sentinel-2 aggregated to the same resolution as the observed LST was high (r = 0.91). Despite the imperfections of the downscaling model, the derived LST at 10 m resolution provides a better perception of the LST field that can be easily associated with land cover features present in urban environment. The LST downscaling approach was implemented into Google Earth Engine. It provides a user-friendly online application that can be used for any city or urban region for generating a more realistic spatial pattern of LST than can be directly observed by contemporary Earth observation satellites. In this study, we used RVUS data from RadCalNet as a benchmark to verify the radiometric accuracy and stability of operational and reprocessed SNPP/VIIRS data and the accuracy of NOAA-20/VIIRS data, as well as to assess the efficiency of the SNPP/VIIRS reprocessing algorithm. In addition, to remove the uncertainty of the RVUS site itself, we used Landsat 8/OLI as another benchmark with which to validate the accuracy and stability of VIIRS data through the RUVS site. The radiometric biases of the operational and reprocessed SNPP VIIRS bands were within ±4% and ±2%, respectively, as compared with the RUVS site and OLI, except for the M10 and M11 bands. In particular, the biases of the M5 and M7 bands were reduced by ~2% in this study. NOAA-20 VIIRS, on the other hand, was consistently lower than SNPP by ~2 to ~4% for all the bands. For the equivalent bands, the drift differences between operational and reprocessed SNPP/VIIRS and OLI were no larger than 0.24%/year and 0.1%/year, respectively. Over the past decades, remote sensing satellite sensors have significantly increased their performance and, at the same time, differed in their characteristics. Therefore, making the data repeatable over time and uniform with respect to different platforms has become one of the most challenging issues to obtain a representation of the intrinsic characteristics of the observed target. In this context, atmospheric correction has the role of cleaning the signal from unwanted contributions and moving from the sensor radiance to a quantity more closely related to the intrinsic properties of the target, such as ground reflectance. To this end, atmospheric correction procedures must consider a number of factors, closely related to the specific scene acquired and to the characteristics of the sensor. In mountainous environments, atmospheric correction must include a topographic correction level to compensate for the topographic effects that heavily affect the remote signal. In this paper, we want to estimate the impact of topographic correction on remote sensing images based on a statistical analysis, using data acquired under different illumination conditions with different sensors. The Landsat program has a long history of providing remotely sensed data to the user community. This history is being extended with the addition of the Landsat 9 satellite, which closely mimics the Landsat 8 satellite and its instruments. These satellites contain two instruments, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS). OLI is a push-broom sensor that collects visible and near-infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) wavelengths at 30 m ground sample distance, along with a panchromatic 15 m band. The TIRS sensor contains two long-wave thermal spectral channels centered at 10.9 and 12 µm. The data from these two instruments, on both satellites, are combined into a single Landsat product. The Landsat 5–9 satellites follow a 16 day repeat cycle designated as the Worldwide Reference System (WRS-2), which provides a global notional gridded mapping for identifying individual Landsat scenes. The Landsat 8 and 9 satellites are flown such that their orbital tracks are separated by 8 days in this 16 day cycle. During the commissioning period of Landsat 9, and during its ascent to its operational WRS-2 orbit, the Landsat 9 satellite's orbital track went under and crossed over the orbital track of the Landsat 8 satellite. This produced a unique situation where nearly time-coincident imagery could be obtained from the instruments of the two spacecrafts. From a radiometric standpoint, this allowed for near-time cross-calibration between the instruments to be performed. From a geometry perspective, calibration is achieved through high-resolution reference imagery over specific ground locations, thus ensuring calibration of the instruments and for the instruments to be well cross-calibrated geometrically. Although these underfly data do not provide calibration of the instruments between the platforms from a geometric perspective, they allow for the verification of the calibration steps involving the instruments and spacecraft. This paper discusses the co-registration of this unique set of data while also discussing other geometric aspects of these data by looking at and comparing the differences in sensor viewing and sun angles associated with the collections from the two platforms for imagery obtained over common geographic locations. The image-to-image comparisons between Landsat 8 and 9 coincident pairs, where both datasets are precision terrain products, are registered to within 2.2 m with respect to their root-mean-squared radial error (RMSEr). The 2.2 m represents less than 0.1 of a 30 m multispectral pixel in misregistration between the L9 and L8 underfly products that will be available to the user community. This unique dataset will provide well-registered, near-coincident image acquisitions between the two platforms that can be a key to any calibration or application comparisons. The paper also presents that, for images for which one of the image pairs failed precision corrections and became a terrain-corrected only product type, a range of 8–14 m RMSEr could be expected in co-registration, while, in cases where both image pairs failed the precision correction step and both images became a terrain-corrected only product type, a 14 m RMSEr could be expected for co-registration. This study evaluates the geological attributes of rocks within the Abu Ghalaga area using spatial, geochemical, and petrographic approaches. ASTER and Landsat imagery processed using band ratio and principal component analysis were used to map hydrothermal alterations, while a regional tectonic evaluation was based on automated extraction of lineaments from a digital elevation model. Geochemical and petrographic analyses were then employed for discrete scale evaluation of alteration patterns of rocks across the study location. Based on satellite image processing, alteration patterns across the study area are widespread, while evidence from lineament analysis suggests a dominant NW–SE tectonic trend accompanied by a less dominant ENE–WSW direction. The different rock units exposed in the studied district are arranged chronologically from oldest to youngest as arc metavolcanic group (basalt and rhyolite), arc metagabbro–diorite, gneissose granite (granodiorite and tonalite), and dykes (aplite and felsite). Various types of igneous and metamorphic rocks have propylitic, phyllic, and argillic zones. Geochemical data indicate that the studied rocks are classified into granite, granodiorite, gabbroic diorite, and gabbro. Geochemically, the rocks have a sub-alkaline magma type. The granodiorite–tonalite is derived from the calc–alkaline magma nature, while gabbro and diorite samples exhibit tholeiitic to calc–alkaline affinity. The tectonic setting of the studied rocks trends toward volcanic arc granite (VAG). Based on petrographic, geochemical, and remote analyses, sericitization, chloritization, epidotization, kaolinitization, carbonatization, and silicification are the main alteration types present in the study area. The Copernicus Sentinel-2 (S2) constellation comprises of two satellites in a sun-synchronous orbit. The S2 sensors have three spatial resolutions: 10, 20, and 60 m. The Landsat 8 (L8) satellite has sensors that provide seasonal coverage at spatial resolutions of 15, 30, and 60 m. Many remote sensing applications require the spatial resolutions of all data to be at the highest resolution possible, i.e., 10 m for S2. To address this demand, researchers have proposed various methods that exploit the spectral and spatial correlations within multispectral data to sharpen the S2 bands to 10 m. In this study, we combined S2 and L8 data. An S2 sharpening method called Sentinel-2 Sharpening (S2Sharp) was modified to include the 30 m and 15 m spectral bands from L8 and to sharpen all bands (S2 and L8) to the highest resolution of the data, which was 10 m. Models for bathymetry retrieval from multispectral images have not considered the errors caused by tidal fluctuation. A rigorous bathymetric model that considers the variation in tide height time series, including the tide height calculation and instantaneous tide height correction at the epoch of satellite flight into the bathymetric retrieval model, is proposed in this paper. The model was applied on Weizhou Island, located in Guangxi Province, China, and its accuracy verificated with four check lines and seven checkpoints. A scene from the Landsat 8 satellite image was used as experimental data. The reference ("true") water depth data collected by a RESON SeaBat 7125 multibeam instrument was used for comparison analysis. When satellite-derived bathymetry is compared, it is found that maximum absolute error, mean absolute error, and RMSE have decreased 54, 45, and 30% relative to that of the traditional model in the entire test field. The accuracy of the water depths retrieved by our model increased 30 and 56% when validated using four check lines and seven checkpoints, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the model proposed in this paper can effectively improve the accuracy of bathymetry retrieved from Landsat 8 images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research utilized various methods for extracting soil characteristics from Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS imagery in the Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam. In this study, the Object-Based Oriented Classification (OBOC) method was used to extract information about land cover (focusing on rock outcrops) on the basis of the TGSI, NDVI, and NDBI indicators. The soil moisture information was determined by examining the correlation between the Land Surface Temperature (LST) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The findings indicated that 40 locations in the study area were covered with rock outcrops, with a Kappa index of 85.10%. In addition, soil moisture varied markedly from the sandy coastal regions, urban areas, and hilly and mountainous areas on the study area's surface. Space-based cropland phenology monitoring substantially assists agricultural managing practices and plays an important role in crop yield predictions. Multitemporal satellite observations allow analyzing vegetation seasonal dynamics over large areas by using vegetation indices or by deriving biophysical variables. The Nile Delta represents about half of all agricultural lands of Egypt. In this region, intensifying farming systems are predominant and multi-cropping rotations schemes are increasing, requiring a high temporal and spatial resolution monitoring for capturing successive crop growth cycles. This study presents a workflow for cropland phenology characterization and mapping based on time series of green Leaf Area Index (LAI) generated from NASA's Harmonized Landsat 8 (L8) and Sentinel-2 (S2) surface reflectance dataset from 2016 to 2019. LAI time series were processed for each satellite dataset, which were used separately and combined to identify seasonal dynamics for a selection of crop types (wheat, clover, maize and rice). For the combination of L8 with S2 LAI products, we proposed two time series smoothing and fitting methods: (1) the Savitzky–Golay (SG) filter and (2) the Gaussian Processes Regression (GPR) fitting function. Single-sensor and L8-S2 combined LAI time series were used for the calculation of key crop Land Surface Phenology (LSP) metrics (start of season, end of season, length of season), whereby the detection of cropland growing seasons was based on two established threshold methods, i.e., a seasonal or a relative amplitude value. Overall, the developed phenology extraction scheme enabled identifying up to two successive crop cycles within a year, with a superior performance observed for the seasonal than for the relative threshold method, in terms of consistency and cropland season detection capability. Differences between the time series collections were analyzed by comparing the phenology metrics per crop type and year. Results suggest that L8-S2 combined LAI data streams with GPR led to a more precise detection of the start and end of growing seasons for most crop types, reaching an overall detection of 74% over the total planted crops versus 69% with S2 and 63% with L8 alone. Finally, the phenology mapping allowed us to evaluate the spatial and temporal evolution of the croplands over the agroecosystem in the Nile Delta. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mapping of fire extent and severity across broad landscapes and timeframes using remote sensing approaches is valuable to inform ecological research, biodiversity conservation and fire management. Compiling imagery from various satellite sensors can assist in long-term fire history mapping; however, inherent sensor differences need to be considered. The New South Wales Fire Extent and Severity Mapping (FESM) program uses imagery from Sentinel and Landsat satellites, along with supervised classification algorithms, to produce state-wide fire maps over recent decades. In this study, we compared FESM outputs from Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 sensors, which have different spatial and spectral resolutions. We undertook independent accuracy assessments of both Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 sensor algorithms using high-resolution aerial imagery from eight training fires. We also compared the FESM outputs from both sensors across 27 case study fires. We compared the mapped areas of fire severity classes between outputs and assessed the classification agreement at random sampling points. Our independent accuracy assessment demonstrated very similar levels of accuracy for both sensor algorithms. We also found that there was substantial agreement between the outputs from the two sensors. Agreement on the extent of burnt versus unburnt areas was very high, and the severity classification of burnt areas was typically either in agreement between the sensors or in disagreement by only one severity class (e.g., low and moderate severity or high and extreme severity). Differences between outputs are likely partly due to differences in sensor resolution (10 m and 30 m pixel sizes for Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8, respectively) and may be influenced by landscape complexity, such as terrain roughness and foliage cover. The expanded Trend-to-Trend (T2T) cross-calibration technique has the potential to calibrate two sensors in much less time and provides trends on a daily assessment basis. The trend obtained from the expanded technique aids in evaluating the differences between satellite sensors. Therefore, this technique was validated with several trusted cross-calibration techniques to evaluate its accuracy. Initially, the expanded T2T technique was validated with three independent RadCaTS RRV, DIMITRI-PICS, and APICS models, and results show a 1% average difference with other models over all bands. Further, this technique was validated with other SDSU techniques to calibrate the newly launched satellite Landsat 9 with 8, demonstrating good agreement in all bands within 0.5%. This technique was also validated for Terra MODIS and ETM+, showing consistency within 1% for all bands compared to four PICS sites. Additionally, the T2T technique was applied to a global scale using EPICS Global sites. The expanded T2T cross-calibration gain result obtained for Landsat 8 versus Landsat 7/8, Sentinel 2A/2B, and Terra/Aqua MODIS presented that the difference between these pairs was within 0.5–1% for most of the spectral bands. Total uncertainty obtained for these pairs of sensors using Monte Carlo Simulation varies from 2.5–4% for all bands except for SWIR2 bands, which vary up to 5%. The difference between EPICS Global and EPICS North Africa was calculated using the ratio of trend gain; the difference among them was within 0.5–1% difference on average for all the sensors and bands within a 0.5% uncertainty level difference.

Offset tracking technology is widely studied to evaluate glacier surface displacements. However, few studies have used a cross-platform to this end. In this study, two heterogeneous data sources, Sentinel-1 and Landsat 8, from January 2019 to January 2021, were used to estimate the offset, and then the optimal estimation of the 3D deformation rate of a Himalayan glacier was obtained based on the joint model of variance component estimation. The results show that the maximum deformation rates of the glacier in the east–west direction, north–south direction, and vertical direction are 85, 126, and 88 mm/day, respectively. The results of the joint model were compared and analyzed with the results of simultaneous optical image pixel offset tracking. The results showed that the accuracy of the joint solution model increased by 41% in the east–west direction and 36% in the south–north direction. The regional flow velocity of the moraine glacier after the joint solution was consistent with the vector boundary of the glacier cataloging data. The time-series results of the glacier displacement were calculated using more images. These results indicate that the joint solution model is feasible for calculating temporal glacier velocity. The model can improve the time resolution of the monitoring results and obtain further information on glacier characteristics. Our results show that the glacier velocity is affected by local terrain slope and temperature. However, there is no absolute positive correlation between glacier velocity and slope. This study provides a reference for the joint acquisition of large-scale three-dimensional displacement of glaciers using multi-source remote sensing data and provides support for the identification and early warning of glacier disasters.
