Due to its low cost and privacy protection, Channel-State-Information (CSI)-based activity detection has gained interest recently. However, to achieve high accuracy, which is challenging in practice, a significant number of training samples are required. To address the issues of the small sample size and cross-scenario in neural network training, this paper proposes a WiFi human activity-recognition system based on transfer learning using an antenna array: Wi-AR. First, the Intel5300 network card collects CSI signal measurements through an antenna array and processes them with a low-pass filter to reduce noise. Then, a threshold-based sliding window method is applied to extract the signal of independent activities, which is further transformed into time–frequency diagrams. Finally, the produced diagrams are used as input to a pretrained ResNet18 to recognize human activities. The proposed Wi-AR was evaluated using a dataset collected in three different room layouts. The testing results showed that the suggested Wi-AR recognizes human activities with a consistent accuracy of about 94%, outperforming the other conventional convolutional neural network approach. Road building has long been under-mapped globally, arguably more than any other human activity threatening environmental integrity. Millions of kilometers of unmapped roads have challenged environmental governance and conservation in remote frontiers. Prior attempts to map roads at large scales have proven inefficient, incomplete, and unamenable to continuous road monitoring. Recent developments in automated road detection using artificial intelligence have been promising but have neglected the relatively irregular, sparse, rustic roadways characteristic of remote semi-natural areas. In response, we tested the accuracy of automated approaches to large-scale road mapping across remote rural and semi-forested areas of equatorial Asia-Pacific. Three machine learning models based on convolutional neural networks (UNet and two ResNet variants) were trained on road data derived from visual interpretations of freely available high-resolution satellite imagery. The models mapped roads with appreciable accuracies, with F1 scores of 72–81% and intersection over union scores of 43–58%. These results, as well as the purposeful simplicity and availability of our input data, support the possibility of concerted program of exhaustive, automated road mapping and monitoring across large, remote, tropical areas threatened by human encroachment. Riparian zones play a critical role in ecosystems. Accurately extracting the area of a riparian zone in open water is challenging due to human activities and climate change. This study used Sentinel-1 satellite data to investigate the capabilities of the support vector machine, extreme gradient boosting, and random forest methods, which were optimized by genetic algorithms for the detection of area changes in the riparian zone in the heart region of the Three Gorges Reservoir area of China. A total of 29 images were collected in 2020, and three models were created for each image, which were then transferred to other phases. The models' performance metrics were validated using all of the images. The results indicated that the SVM method achieved the best performance with an accuracy of 0.945, an F1_Score of 0.950, and a kappa coefficient of 0.889. The optimal model was then used to monitor the area changes in the riparian zone over the study area in 2020. It was calculated that the area of the riparian zones was the smallest on 26 December and the largest on 17 June, with a maximum riparian zone of 31.97 km 2 . Overall, this study demonstrates that an SVM is the most stable method for detecting area changes in a riparian zone when using Sentinel-1 data compared to the RF and XGB methods. The findings are anticipated to provide a feasible plan for detecting the area dynamics in open-water riparian zones and to provide valuable information for the rational utilization of land resources and the ecological safety of the riparian zone in the Three Gorges Reservoir. The measurement of atmospheric NO 2 pollution concentrations has become a critical topic due to its impact on human health. Ground sensors are the most popular method for measuring atmospheric pollution, but they can be expensive to purchase, install, and maintain. In contrast, satellite technology offers global coverage but typically provides concentration estimates at the tropospheric level, not at the ground level where most human activities take place. This work presents a model that can be used to estimate NO 2 ground-level concentrations in metropolitan areas using Sentinel-5P satellite images and ERA5 meteorological data. The primary goal is to offer a cost-effective solution for Low- and Medium-Income Countries (LMICs) to assess air quality, thereby addressing the air quality measurement constraints. To validate the model's accuracy, study points were selected in alignment with the Regional Agency for the Environment Protection (ARPA) NO 2 sensor network in the Metropolitan City of Milan. The results showed that the RMSE of the model estimations was significantly lower than the standard deviation of the real measurements. This work fills the gaps in the literature by providing an accurate estimation model of NO 2 in the Metropolitan City of Milan using both satellite data and ERA5 meteorological data. According to current research, machine learning algorithms have been proven to be effective in detecting both optical and non-optical parameters of water quality. The use of satellite remote sensing is a valuable method for monitoring long-term changes in the quality of lake water. In this study, Sentinel-2 MSI images and in situ data from the Dianshan Lake area from 2017 to 2023 were used. Four machine learning methods were tested, and optimal detection models were determined for each water quality parameter. It was ultimately determined that these models could be applied to long-term images to analyze the spatiotemporal variations and distribution patterns of water quality in Dianshan Lake. Based on the research findings, integrated learning algorithms, especially CatBoost, have achieved good results in the retrieval of all water quality parameters. Spatiotemporal analysis reveals that the overall distribution of water quality parameters is uneven, with significant spatial variations. Permanganate index (CODMn), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP) show relatively small interannual differences, generally exhibiting a decreasing trend in concentrations. In contrast, chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), dissolved oxygen (DO), and Secchi Disk Depth (SDD) exhibit significant interannual and inter-year differences. Chl-a reached its peak in 2020, followed by a decrease, while DO and SDD showed the opposite trend. Further analysis indicated that the distribution of water quality parameters is significantly influenced by climatic factors and human activities such as agricultural expansion. Overall, there has been an improvement in the water quality of Dianshan Lake. The study demonstrates the feasibility of accurately monitoring water quality even without measured spectral data, using machine learning methods and satellite reflectance data. With the influence of climate change and human activities, the frequency and scale of forest fires have been increasing continuously, posing a significant threat to the environment and human safety. Therefore, rapid and accurate forest fire detection has become essential for effective control of forest fires. This study proposes a Forest Fire Detection and Segmentation Model (FFDSM) based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) infrared images to address the problems of forest fire occlusion and the poor adaptability of traditional forest fire detection methods. The FFDSM integrates the YOLO (You Only Look Once) v5s-seg, Efficient Channel Attention (ECA), and Spatial Pyramid Pooling Fast Cross-Stage Partial Channel (SPPFCSPC) to improve the detection accuracy of forest fires of different sizes. The FFDSM enhances the detection and extraction capabilities of forest fire features, enabling the accurate segmentation of forest fires of different sizes and shapes. Furthermore, we conducted ablation and controlled experiments on different attention mechanisms, spatial pyramid pooling (SPP) modules, and fire sizes to verify the effectiveness of the added modules and the adaptability of the FFDSM model. The results of the ablation experiment show that, compared to the original YOLOv5s-seg model, the models fused with the ECA and SPPFCSPC achieve an improved accuracy, with FFDSM showing the greatest improvement. FFDSM achieves a 2.1% increase in precision, a 2.7% increase in recall, a 2.3% increase in mAP@0.5, and a 4.2% increase in mAP@0.5:0.95. The results of the controlled experiments on different attention mechanisms and SPP modules demonstrate that the ECA+SPPFCSPC model (FFDSM) performs the best, with a precision, recall, mAP@0.5, and mAP@0.5:0.95 reaching 0.959, 0.870, 0.907, and 0.711, respectively. The results of the controlled experiment on different fire sizes show that FFDSM outperforms YOLOv5s-seg for all three fire sizes, and it performs the best for small fires, with a precision, recall, mAP@0.5, and mAP@0.5:0.95 reaching 0.989, 0.938, 0.964, and 0.769, respectively, indicating its good adaptability for early forest fire detection. The results indicate that the forest fire detection model based on UAV infrared images (FFDSM) proposed in this study exhibits a high detection accuracy. It is proficient in identifying obscured fires in optical images and demonstrates good adaptability in various fire scenarios. Lakes play a crucial role in the earth's ecosystems and human activities. While turbidity is not a direct biochemical indicator of lake water quality, it is relatively easy to measure and indicates trophic status and lake health. Although ocean color satellites have been widely used to monitor water color parameters, their coarse spatial resolution makes it hard to capture the fine spatial variability of turbidity in lakes. The combination of Sentinel-2 and Landsat provides an opportunity to monitor lake turbidity with high spatial and temporal resolution. This study aims to generate consistent turbidity products in Taihu Lake from 2018 to 2022 using the Multispectral Instrument (MSI) on board Sentinel-2A/B and the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on board Landsat-8/9. We first tested the performance of three atmospheric correction methods to retrieve consistent reflectance from MSI and OLI images. We found that the Rayleigh correction and a subtraction of the SWIR band from Rayleigh-corrected reflectance can generate the most consistent reflectance (the coefficient of determination (R2) > 0.84, the mean absolution percentage error (MAPE) < 7%, the median error (ME) < 0.0035, and slope > 0.92). Machine learning models outperformed an existing semi-analytical retrieval algorithm in retrieving turbidity (MSI: R2 = 0.92, MAPE = 18.78%, and OLI: R2 = 0.93, MAPE = 16.20%). The consistency of turbidity from the same-day MSI and OLI images was also satisfactory (N = 3110 and MAPE = 26.48%). The distribution of turbidity exhibited obvious spatial and seasonal variability in Taihu Lake from 2018 to 2022. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), known as drones, have played a significant role in recent years in creating resilient smart cities. UAVs can be used for a wide range of applications, including emergency response, civil protection, search and rescue, and surveillance, thanks to their high mobility and reasonable price. Automatic recognition of human activity in aerial videos captured by drones is critical for various tasks for these applications. However, this is difficult due to many factors specific to aerial views, including camera motion, vibration, low resolution, background clutter, lighting conditions, and variations in view. Although deep learning approaches have demonstrated their effectiveness in a variety of challenging vision tasks, they require either a large number of labelled aerial videos for training or a dataset with balanced classes, both of which can be difficult to obtain. To address these challenges, a hybrid data augmentation method is proposed which combines data transformation with the Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based feature augmentation method. In particular, we apply the basic transformation methods to increase the amount of video in the database. A Convolutional Neural Network–Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-LSTM) model is used to learn the spatio-temporal dynamics of actions, then a GAN-based technique is applied to generate synthetic CNN-LSTM features conditioned on action classes which provide a high discriminative spatio-temporal features. We tested our model on the YouTube aerial database, demonstrating encouraging results that surpass those of previous state-of-the-art works, including an accuracy rate of 97.83%. The Brazilian Legal Amazon (BLA) is the largest administrative unit in Brazil. The region has undergone a series of territorial policies that have led to specific conditions of occupation of the land and particular urban environments. This plurality expresses specific physical relations with the environment and infrastructure, which require innovative methods for detecting and profiling human settlements in this region. The aim of this work is to demonstrate how angular composites of nighttime lights can be associated with specific profiles of urban infrastructure, sociodemographic parameters, and mining sites present in the BLA. We make use of sets of yearly VNP46A4 angular composites specifically associated with the narrowest ranges of observations across the year, i.e., observations right below the sensor's pathway (near-nadir range) and observations in between the oblique range (off-nadir), to identify urban typologies that expose the presence of structures such as vertical buildings, industrial sites, and areas with different income levels. Through a non-parametric evaluation of the simple difference in radiance values ranging from 2012 to 2021, followed by an ordinary least squares regression (OLS), we find that off-nadir values are persistently higher than near-nadir values except in areas where obstructing structures and particular anisotropic characteristics are present, generally changing trends of the so-called angular effect. We advocate that relational metrics can be extracted from the angular annual composites to provide additional information on the current urban structural state. By calculating the simple difference (DIF), the relative difference (REL), and the residual values of the linear regression formula estimated for the off-nadir and near-nadir composites (RES), it is possible to differentiate urban environments by their physical aspects, such as high-mid income areas, low-income settlements with different levels of density, industrial sites, and verticalized areas. Moreover, pixels that were exclusively found in one of the angular composites could be spatially associated with phenomena such as the overglow effect for the exclusive off-nadir samples and with the wetlands of the northwest portion of the Amazon Forest for the near-nadir samples. This work deepens our current understanding of how to optimize the use of the VNP46A4 angular series for monitoring human activities in the Amazon biome and provides further directions on research possibilities concerning nighttime light angular composites. In surveillance and monitoring systems, the use of mobile vehicles or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), like the drone type, provides advantages in terms of access to the environment with enhanced range, maneuverability, and safety due to the ability to move omnidirectionally to explore, identify, and perform some security tasks. These activities must be performed autonomously by capturing data from the environment; usually, the data present errors and uncertainties that impact the recognition and resolution in the detection and identification of objects. The resolution in the acquisition of data can be improved by integrating data sensor fusion systems to measure the same physical phenomenon from two or more sensors by retrieving information simultaneously. This paper uses the constant turn and rate velocity (CTRV) kinematic model of a drone but includes the angular velocity not considered in previous works as a complementary alternative in Lidar and Radar data sensor fusion retrieved using UAVs and applying the extended Kalman filter (EKF) for the detection of moving targets. The performance of the EKF is evaluated by using a dataset that jointly includes position data captured from a LiDAR and a Radar sensor for an object in movement following a trajectory with sudden changes. Additive white Gaussian noise is then introduced into the data to degrade the data. Then, the root mean square error (RMSE) versus the increase in noise power is evaluated, and the results show an improvement of 0.4 for object detection over other conventional kinematic models that do not consider significant trajectory changes. The tremendous advancement of cities has caused changes to the urban subsurface. Urban climate problems have become increasingly prominent, especially with regard to the intensification of the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The local climate zone (LCZ) is a new quantitative method for analyzing urban climate that is based on the kind of urban surface and can effectively deal with the problem of the hazy distinction between urban and rural areas in UHI effect research. LCZs are widely used in regional climate modeling, urban planning, and thermal comfort surveys. Existing large-scale LCZ classification methods usually use visual features of optical images, such as spectral and textural features. There are many problems with hyperspectral LCZ extraction over large areas. LCZ is an integrated concept that includes features of the geography, society, and economy. Consequently, it makes sense to consider the characteristics of human activity and the visual features of the images to interpret them accurately. ALOS_DEM data can depict the city's physical characteristics; however, images of nighttime lights are crucial indicators of human activity. These three datasets can be used in combination to portray the urban environment. Therefore, this study proposes a method for fusing daytime and nighttime data for LCZ mapping, i.e., fusing daytime Zhuhai-1 hyperspectral images and their derived feature indices, ALOS_DEM data, and nighttime light data from Luojia-1. By combining daytime and nighttime information, the proposed approach captures the temporal dynamics of urban areas, providing a more complete representation of their characteristics. The integration of the data allows for a more refined identification and characterization of urban land cover. It comprehensively integrates daytime and nighttime data, exploits synergistic information from multiple sources, and provides higher accuracy and resolution for LCZ mapping. First, we extracted various features, namely spectral, red-edge, and textural features, from the Zhuhai-1 images, ALOS_DEM data, and nighttime light data from Luojia-1. Random forest (RF) and XGBoost classifiers were used, and the average impurity reduction method was employed to assess the significance of the variables. All the input variables were optimized to select the best combination of variables. The results from a study of the 5th ring road area of Beijing, China, revealed that the technique achieved LCZ mapping with good precision, with a total accuracy of 87.34%. In addition, to examine and contrast the effects of various feature indices on the LCZ classification accuracy, feature combination methods were used. The results of the study showed that the accuracies of LCZ classification in terms of spectral and textural were improved by 2.33% and 2.19% using the RF classifier, respectively. The radiation brightness value (RBV) (GI value = 0.0212) attained the classification's highest variable importance value; the DEM also produced a high GI value (0.0159), indicating that night lighting and landform features strongly influence LCZ classification. Cultural heritage is a testimony of past human activity, and, as such, cultural objects exhibit great variety in their nature, size, and complexity, from small artefacts and museum items to cultural landscapes, and from historic buildings and ancient monuments to city centers and archaeological sites. Cultural heritage around the globe suffers from wars, natural disasters, and human negligence. More specifically, cultural goods and artefacts are put at risk through several anthropogenic actions: Anthropogenic threats take various dimensions, ranging from theft from museums, private collections, and religious buildings, smuggling of and illicit trade in cultural goods, the irremediable looting and demolition of archaeological sites by clandestine excavators, or simply neglect of heritage sites. Illicit trading has expanded dramatically recently, especially in areas affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters, either aiming at destroying collective memory and dismembering people's identity or mostly motivated by the pursuit of profit. Moreover, the illicit trafficking of cultural goods contributes to the funding of terrorism, organized crime, and money laundering. The mission of ENIGMA, a EUR 4 million EU funded project, is to achieve excellence in the protection of cultural goods and artefacts from man-made threats by contributing to their identification, traceability, and provenance research, as well as by safeguarding and monitoring endangered heritage sites. ENIGMA objectives are designed to help the involved stakeholders better respond to this complex and multi-dimensional problem and leverage active collaboration by fostering and enabling interlinking of databases, and evidence-based deployment of preventative measures. Satellite data provide crucial information to better understand volcanic processes and mitigate associated risks. In recent years, exploiting the growing number of spaceborne polar platforms, several automated volcanic monitoring systems have been developed. These, however, rely on good geometrical and meteorological conditions, as well as on the occurrence of thermally detectable activity at the time of acquisition. A multiplatform approach can thus increase the number of volcanological-suitable scenes, minimise the temporal gap between acquisitions, and provide crucial information on the onset, evolution, and conclusion of both transient and long-lasting volcanic episodes. In this work, we assessed the capabilities of the MEdium Resolution Spectral Imager-II (MERSI-II) sensor aboard the Fengyun-3D (FY-3D) platform to detect and quantify heat flux sourced from volcanic activity. Using the Middle Infrared Observation of Volcanic Activity (MIROVA) algorithm, we processed 3117 MERSI-II scenes of Mount Etna acquired between January 2020 and February 2023. We then compared the Volcanic Radiative Power (VRP, in Watt) timeseries against those obtained by MODIS and VIIRS sensors. The remarkable agreement between the timeseries, both in trends and magnitudes, was corroborated by correlation coefficients (ρ) between 0.93 and 0.95 and coefficients of determination (R2) ranging from 0.79 to 0.84. Integrating the datasets of the three sensors, we examined the effusive eruption of Mount Etna started on 27 November 2022, and estimated a total volume of erupted lava of 8.15 ± 2.44 × 106 m3 with a Mean Output Rate (MOR) of 1.35 ± 0.40 m3 s−1. The reduced temporal gaps between acquisitions revealed that rapid variations in cloud coverage as well as geometrically unfavourable conditions play a major role in thermal volcano monitoring. Evaluating the capabilities of MERSI-II, we also highlight how a multiplatform approach is essential to enhance the efficiency of satellite-based systems for volcanic surveillance. Moving object detection in remote sensing image sequences has been widely used in military and civilian fields. However, the complex background of remote sensing images and the small sizes of moving objects bring great difficulties for effective detection. To solve this problem, we propose a real-time moving object detection method for remote sensing image sequences. This method works by fusing the semantic information from a single image extracted by the object detection branch with the motion information of multiple frames extracted by the motion detection branch. Specifically, in the motion detection branch, we design a motion feature enhancement module (MFE) to improve the interframe motion information. Then, we design a Motion Information Extraction network (MIE) to extract motion information. Finally, the moving object information is directly output by fusing the motion and semantic information extracted by the object detection branch. Based on the experimental results of the two datasets, the proposed method achieves an accuracy rate of 93.21%, a recall rate of 92.72%, an average frame rate of 25.25 frames (fps), and a performance of 96.71% in terms of AP@0.5. Human activity recognition plays a vital role in many applications, such as body falling surveillance and healthcare for elder's in-home monitoring. Instead of using traditional micro-Doppler signals based on time-frequency distribution, we turn to another way and use the Relax algorithm to process the radar echo so as to obtain the required parameters. In this paper, we aim at the multi-view idea in which two radars at different views work synchronously and fuse the features extracted from each radar, respectively. Furthermore, we discuss the common estimated time-frequency features and time-varying spatial features of multi-view radar-echo and then formulate the parameters matrix via principal component analysis, and finally transform them into the machine learning classifiers to make further comparisons. Simulations and results show that our proposed multi-view parameter fusion idea could lead to relative-high accuracy and robust recognition performance, which would provide a feasible application for future human–computer monitoring scenarios. Due to land contamination and human activities, the sea surface height (SSH) data retrieved from altimeter coastal waveforms have poor precision and cannot provide effective information for various tasks. The along-track high-resolution characteristic of the new synthetic aperture radar (SAR) altimeter makes the retracking methods of traditional coastal waveforms difficult to apply. This study proposes a partial reconstruction method for SAR altimeter coastal waveforms. By making adaptive threshold judgments of model matching errors and repairing the contaminated waveforms based on the nearest linear prediction, the success rate of retracking and retrieval precision of SSH are significantly improved. The data from the coastal experimental areas of the Sentinel-3B satellite altimeter are processed. The results indicate that the mean proportion of waveform quality improvement brought by partial reconstruction is 80.30%, the mean retracking success rate of reconstructed waveforms is 85.60%, and the mean increasing percentage is 30.98%. The noise levels of SSH data retrieved by different methods are calculated to evaluate the processing precision. It is shown that the 20 Hz SSH precisions of the original and reconstructed coastal waveforms are 12.75 cm and 6.32 cm, respectively, and the corresponding 1 Hz SSH precisions are 2.85 cm and 1.41 cm, respectively. The results validate that the proposed partial reconstruction method has improved the SSH precision by a factor of two, and the comparison results with mean sea surface (MSS) model data further verify this conclusion. Grassland locusts harm a large amount of grassland every year. Grassland locusts have caused devastating disasters across grassland resources and have greatly impacted the lives of herdsmen. Due to the impacts of climate change and human activity, the distribution of grassland locust habitats changes constantly. The monitoring and identification of locust habitats is of great significance for the production and utilization of grassland resources. In order to further understand the behavior of these grassland pests and carry out precise prevention and control strategies, researchers have often used survey points to reveal the distribution of habitat-suitability areas or establish the high density of locusts (more than 15 locusts/m2) to identify the different risk levels of habitat-suitability areas for grassland locusts. However, the results of these two methods have often been too large, which is not conducive to the precise control of grassland locusts in large areas. Starting from the sample points of our locust investigation, we conducted a hierarchical prediction of the density of locusts and used the probability value of locust occurrence, as predicted by a maximum entropy model, to categorize the habitat-suitability areas according to the probability thresholds of suitable species growth. The results were in good agreement with the actual situation and there was little difference between the prediction results for locust densities greater than 15 locusts/m2 in the middle- and high-density habitat-suitability areas and those for all survey points, while there was a big difference between the prediction results for densities in the middle- and low-density habitat-suitability areas and those for all survey points. Since the deployment of EO resources into orbit, archaeological surveys have made extensive use of space imaging. In particular, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data have often proved useful in many geomorphic investigations. In this study, we tested the potential of SAR/InSAR datasets for archaeological applications, which were conducted for southern Mesopotamia. While identifying the embedded human settlements, we attempted to reconstruct the paleoclimatic conditions and the paleotopography imprinted onto contemporary geography as key features of the environmental context of ancient human activity. First, Sentinel-1 and PALSAR-2 SAR/InSAR time-series data were compiled and used to identify the paleoshoreline and other ancient hydrologic backgrounds in southern Mesopotamia. We defined regions of interest (ROI) based on this and further used a rotational decomposition of the time-series signature to detect shallow subsurface features in predefined ROI. SAR/InSAR data processing identified ancient channels and shorelines that match the historical/archaeological records of key Sumerian cities. Our findings in Eridu and Larsa-Uruk-Umma, as well as their hydrological contexts, are archaeologically significant and suggest the need for more ground surveys. In terms of global coverage and resolving power, this study shows that the potential of SAR/InSAR for probing the background environment of ancient civilizations is comparable to high-resolution commercial optical imaging. This study investigates whether the intensity of human activities conducted by urban populations and carried by urban land follows a wave-shaped diffusion rule using a harmonized DMSP-like NTL dataset during 1992–2018 in 234 cities of China. The results show that variations in the intensity of human activities are diffused in a wave-shaped manner from the urban center to the periphery in cities of different sizes and structures. The results demonstrate that variations in the intensity of human activity also exhibit a wave-shaped diffusion pattern, which is best modeled by a Gaussian function with an average R2 of 0.79 and standard deviation of 0.36 across all fitted functions. The outward movement of these waves in monocentric cities with an urban population <8 million occurred at a pace of ~0.5–1.0 km per year, reaching an average distance of ~18 km from the urban centers. While the pace decreased to ~0.2–0.6 km per year in larger or polycentric cities, the average distance of the waves from the urban centers increased to ~22–25 km in these larger cities. In addition, a process-pattern link between the distance-decayed rule and the wave-shaped rule of human activity dynamics was established. Moreover, a spatiotemporal Gaussian function was further discussed to enable modelers to forecast future variations in the intensity of human activities. The disclosed wave-shape rule and model can benefit the simulation of urban dynamics if integrated with other simulation technologies, such as agent-based models and cellular automata. Desertification is of significant concern as one of the world's most serious ecological and environmental problems. China has made great achievements in afforestation and desertification control in recent years. The climate varies greatly across northern China. Using a long-time series of remote sensing data to study the effects of desertification will further the understanding of China's desertification control engineering and climate change mechanisms. The moist index was employed in this research to determine the climate type and delineate the potential occurrence range of desertification in China. Then, based on the Google Earth Engine platform, MODIS data were used to construct various desertification monitoring indicators and applied to four machine learning models. By comparing different combinations of indicators and machine learning models, it was concluded that the random forest model with four indicator combinations had the highest accuracy of 86.94% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.84. Therefore, the random forest model with four indicator combinations was used to monitor desertification in the study area from 2000 to 2020. According to our studies, the area of desertification decreased by more than 237,844 km2 between 2000 and 2020 due to the impact of human activities and in addition to climatic factors such as the important role of precipitation. The study of ecological security patterns (ESPs) is of great significance for improving the value of ecosystem services and promoting both ecological protection and high-quality socio-economic development. As an important part of the "Loss Plateau-Sichuan-Yunnan Ecological Barrier" and "Northern Sand Control Belt" in the national security strategic pattern, there is an urgent need to study the ESPs on the Loess Plateau. Based on a remote sensing dataset, this study identified the ESPs at different spatial scales, and analyzed the similarities and differences of ecological sources, corridors, and key strategic points, so as to better inform the development and implantation of macro and micro ecological protection strategies. When taken as a whole unit, we identified 58 ecological sources (areas with higher levels of ecosystem services) on the Loess Plateau (total area of 57,948.48 km2), along with 134 corridors (total length of 14,094.32 km), 1325 pinch points (total area of 315.01 km2), and 2406 barrier points (total area of 382.50 km2). When splits into ecoregions, we identified 108 sources (total area of 67,892.51 km2), 226 corridors (total length of 13,403.49 km), 2801 pinch points (total area of 851.07 km2, and 3657 barrier points (total area of 800.70 km2). Human activities and land use types are the main factors influencing the number and spatial distribution of corridors, ecological pinch points, and barrier points. ESPs constructed at different spatial scales are broadly similar, but significant differences among details were identified. As such, when formulating ecological protection and restoration strategies, the spatial scale should be considered. Moreover, specific programs should be determined based on ESP characteristics to maximize the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem integrity from multiple perspectives and directions. Although mariculture contributes significantly to regional/local economic development, it also promotes environmental degradation. Therefore, it is essential to understand mariculture dynamics before taking adaptive measures to deal with it. In the present study, a framework that integrates the Google Earth Engine (GEE) based methods and GeoDetector software was developed to identify patterns and drivers of mariculture dynamics. This framework was then applied to Zhao'an Bay, which is an intensive aquaculture bay in Coastal China, based on Landsat 8 OLI (2013–2022) and Sentinel-2 (December 2015–May 2022) data. The results show that the GEE-based method produces acceptable classification accuracy. The overall accuracy values for the interpretation are >85%, where the kappa coefficients are >0.9 for all years, excluding 2015 (0.83). Mariculture increased in the study area from 2013 to 2022, and this is characterised by distinct spatiotemporal variations. Cage mariculture is primarily concentrated around islands, whereas raft mariculture is dominant in bay areas, and pond and mudflat mariculture types are mostly in nearshore areas. The growth of mariculture in Zhao'an Bay is attributed to a combination of geographic and human factors. The initial area associated with mariculture in a grid significantly impacted the expansion of the raft, cage, and mudflat mariculture. The distance to an island, spatial proximity to similar types of mariculture and types of mariculture are the main drivers of change in mariculture. Human activities greatly contribute to the dynamics of mudflat mariculture; regulation regarding the clearing of waterways directly impacts the dynamics of mariculture. The present study demonstrates that the proposed framework facilitates the effective monitoring of the mariculture dynamics and identification of driving factors. Mangrove wetlands are rapidly being lost due to anthropogenic disturbances and natural processes, such as sea-level rise (SLR), but are also recovering as a result of conservation efforts. Accurate and contemporary mangrove maps to detect their distribution and changes are urgently needed to understand how mangroves respond to global change and develop effective conservation projects. Here, we developed a new change detection algorithm called temporal consistency checking combining annual classification and spectral time series (TCC-CS) for tracking mangrove losses and gains. Specifically, mangrove change events were determined by measuring the deviation of greenness and wetness of candidate change segments from automatically collected mangrove reference samples. By applying to the world's largest mangrove patches, we monitored the 35-year mangrove trajectory in the Sundarbans from 1988 to 2022 using all available Landsat images on the Google Earth Engine platform. In the Sundarbans, 18,501.89 ha of mangroves have been gained, but these have been offset by losses of 27,009.79 ha, leading to a net mangrove loss of 1.42% (8507.9 ha) in the past 35 years. We further mapped the pixel-level change agents and found that SLR-induced erosion and degradation, instead of human activities, were the major drivers of losses in the Sundarbans. Trend analysis on loss agents indicates that mangrove losses caused by human activities, such as the expansion of croplands and aquaculture ponds, have declined, but SLR is still a persistent threat to mangrove wetlands in this iconic mangrove area. Our study provides a computationally efficient methodology for examining large-scale mangrove changes, and the resultant annual mangrove maps provide strong support for mangrove conservation in the Sundarbans. Nighttime light (NTL) intensity is highly associated with the unique footprint of human activities, reflecting the development of socioeconomic and urbanization. Therefore, better understanding of the relationship between NTL intensity and human activities can help extend the applications of NTL remote sensing data. Different from the global effect of human activities on NTL intensity discussed in previous studies, we focused more attention to the local effect caused by the spatial heterogeneity of human activities with the support of the multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model in this study. In particular, the Suomi National Polar Orbiting Partnership/Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP/VIIRS) NTL data within Chongqing, China were taken as example, and the point of interest (POI) data and road network data were adopted to characterize the intensity of human activity type. Our results show that there is significant spatial variation in the effect of human activities to the NTL intensity, since the accuracy of fitted MGWR (adj.R2: 0.86 and 0.87 in 2018 and 2020, respectively; AICc: 4844.63 and 4623.27 in 2018 and 2020, respectively) is better than that of both the traditional ordinary least squares (OLS) model and the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model. Moreover, we found that almost all human activity features show strong spatial heterogeneity and their contribution to NTL intensity varies widely across different regions. For instance, the contribution of road network density is more homogeneous, while residential areas have an obviously heterogeneous distribution which is associated with house vacancy. In addition, the contributions of the commercial event and business also have a significant spatial heterogeneity distribution, but show a distinct decrement when facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study successfully explores the relationship between NTL intensity and human activity features considering the spatial heterogeneity, which aims to provide further insights into the future applications of NTL data. Facilitated by the Internet of Things (IoT) and diverse IoT devices, remote sensing data are evolving into the multimedia era with an expanding data scale. Massive remote sensing data are collected by IoT devices to monitor environments and human activities. Because IoT devices are involved in the data collection, there are probably private data contained in the collected remote sensing data, such as the device owner information and the precise location. Therefore, when data analysts, researchers, and other stakeholders require remote sensing data from numerous IoT devices for different analyses and investigations, how to distribute massive remote sensing data efficiently and regulate different people to view different parts of the distributed remote sensing data is a challenge to be addressed. Many general solutions rely on granular access control for content distribution but do not consider the low computational efficiency caused by the huge file size of the remote sensing data or certain IoT devices only have a constrained computational performance. Therefore, we propose a new granular content distribution scheme, which is more lightweight and practical for the distribution of multimedia remote sensing data with the consideration of the large data size to avoid complicated operations to the data. Furthermore, a dual data integrity check (hash summary and watermark) designed in our scheme can detect tampering or forgery from encrypted remote sensing data before decrypting it and validate it again after decryption. The security analyses and experimental results manifest that our new scheme can maintain high computational efficiency and block tampering and forgery during the granular content distribution for IoT remote sensing data. The spatial distribution of night-time lights (NTL) provides a new perspective for studying the range and influence of human activities. However, most studies employing NTL time series are based on monthly or annual composite data, and time series studies incorporating sliding windows are currently lacking. Therefore, using National Polar-Orbiting Partnership's visible infrared imaging radiometer suite (NPP-VIIRS) night-time light remote sensing (NTLRS) data, VNP46A2, toponym, and Yunnan census statistical data, this study proposes a sliding-window-based NTLRS time series detection and analysis method. We extracted ethnic minority areas on the PyCharm platform using ethnic minority population proportion data and toponym and excluding data representing interference from urban areas. We used a sliding window approach to analyze NTLRS time series data of each ethnic group and calculated the cosine similarity between the NTL brightness curve of original data and the sliding window analysis result. The cosine similarity was greater than 0.96 from 2018 to 2020; we also conducted a field trip to the 2019 Torch Festival to demonstrate the applicability of the employed method. Finally, the temporal and spatial pattern of the Torch Festival was analyzed using the festival in Yunnan Province as an example. Results showed that the Torch Festival, mostly celebrated by the Yi ethnic group, was usually held on the 24th (and ranged from the 22nd to 26th) day in the sixth month of the lunar calendar (LC) every year. We found that during the Torch Festival, the greater the increase in the percentage of NTL brightness reduction in the main urban area of Kunming, the greater the percentage of ethnic minorities' NTL brightness. The width of the sliding window can be adjusted appropriately according to the research objective, with these results showing good continuity. Our study presents a new application of the sliding window approach in the field of remote sensing, suitable for research into festivals related to night lights and fire all over the world. Vigorous human activities have strengthened the development and utilization of land, causing huge damage to the earth's surface, while mining the disturbance pattern of human activities can capture the influence process and spatial interaction between human activities and land use. Therefore, in order to explore the inherent relationship between human activities and land use in mountainous counties, a spatial quantitative model of human activity disturbance intensity and land use intensity was proposed based on GF-6 image, traffic data, and socioeconomic data. The model can quantitatively evaluate the disturbance intensity of human activity and land use intensity from "production-living-ecological space", and unfold the correlation between human activity disturbance intensity and land use intensity with Pearson correlation coefficient and bivariate spatial autocorrelation method. Our study presents several key findings: (1) the spatial difference of human activity disturbance is significant in Mianzhu City, and it has steady aggregation (Moran's I index is 0.929), showing a decreasing trend from the southeast to the northwest area; (2) there is a strong positive correlation between the disturbance intensity of human activity and the intensity of land use with Pearson value 0.949; (3) among the eight selected factors, the proportion of construction land area plays a leading role in the disturbance intensity of human activity in Mianzhu City, while the township final account data have the least impact. The study results can provide an important reference for the quantitative identification and evaluation of human disturbances in similar cities and the coordinated development of the human–land relationship. Forest dynamics, including forest loss and gain, are long-term complex ecological processes affected by nature and human activities. It is particularly important to understand the long-term forest dynamics of protected areas to evaluate their conservation efforts. This study adopted the Landsat tree-canopy cover (TCC) method to derive annual TCC data for the period 1984–2020 for the protected areas of northeast China, where protection policies have been carried out since the end of the 20th century, e.g., the Natural Forest Conversion Program (NFCP). A strong correlation was found between the TCC estimates derived from Landsat and LiDAR observations, suggesting the high accuracy of TCC. Forest loss and gain events were also identified from the time series of TCC estimates. High correlations were reported for both forest loss (Producer's accuracy = 85.21%; User's accuracy = 84.26%) and gain (Producer's accuracy = 87.74%; User's accuracy = 88.31%), suggesting that the approach can be used for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the NFCP and other forest conservation efforts. The results revealed a fluctuating upward trend of the TCC of the protected area from 1986 to 2018. The increased area of TCC was much larger than the decreased area, accounting for 59.68% and 40.34%, respectively, suggesting the effectiveness of protection policies. Since the NFCP was officially implemented in 1998, deforestation was effectively curbed, the area of forest loss was significantly reduced (slope: −14.24%/year), and the area of forest gain significantly increased (slope: 4.13%/year). We found that regional forest changes were mainly manifested in "forest gain after loss (forest recovery)" and "forest gain with no loss (forest newborn)", accounting for 40.29% and 37.28% of the total area of forest change, respectively. Moreover, the forest gain area far exceeds the forest loss area, reaching 11.24 million hectares, suggesting a successful forest recovery due to forest protection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses opportunities to use remote sensing (RS) technologies in addressing the persistent global challenges related to the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector. The paper uses a systematic literature review to identify, analyze, and synthesize various uses of RS on the detection and monitoring of ASGM activities across the globe. The study covers the use of spaceborne sensors and available opportunities for data access and processing and emphasizes the important role that freely-available data has played in understanding ASGM activities. It discusses applications and opportunities offered in assessing the geospatial and temporal characteristics of ASGM and its impacts on the surrounding environment. Furthermore, it examines different indicators for the detection of ASGM in the landscape. Finally, technological capabilities described in the study are illustrated with case studies in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Colombia using cloud computing with the Open Data Cube. The case studies demonstrate the identification and quantification of impacts of ASGM activities on land degradation and water turbidity in remote areas and results are dissiminated using the MapX platform. Pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR), enabled by smartphones’ embedded inertial sensors, is widely applied as a type of indoor positioning system (IPS). However, traditional PDR faces two challenges to improve its accuracy: lack of robustness for different PDR-related human activities and positioning error accumulation over elapsed time. To cope with these issues, we propose a novel adaptive human activity-aided PDR (HAA-PDR) IPS that consists of two main parts, human activity recognition (HAR) and PDR optimization. (1) For HAR, eight different locomotion-related activities are divided into two classes: steady-heading activities (ascending/descending stairs, stationary, normal walking, stationary stepping, and lateral walking) and non-steady-heading activities (door opening and turning). A hierarchical combination of a support vector machine (SVM) and decision tree (DT) is used to recognize steady-heading activities. An autoencoder-based deep neural network (DNN) and a heading range-based method to recognize door opening and turning, respectively. The overall HAR accuracy is over 98.44%. (2) For optimization methods, a process automatically sets the parameters of the PDR differently for different activities to enhance step counting and step length estimation. Furthermore, a method of trajectory optimization mitigates PDR error accumulation utilizing the non-steady-heading activities. We divided the trajectory into small segments and reconstructed it after targeted optimization of each segment. Our method does not use any a priori knowledge of the building layout, plan, or map. Finally, the mean positioning error of our HAA-PDR in a multilevel building is 1.79 m, which is a significant improvement in accuracy compared with a baseline state-of-the-art PDR system.

Short-range radar has become one of the latest sensor technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT), and it plays an increasingly vital role in IoT applications. As the essential task for various smart-sensing applications, radar-based human activity recognition and person identification have received more attention due to radar’s robustness to the environment and low power consumption. Activity recognition and person identification are generally treated as separate problems. However, designing different networks for these two tasks brings a high computational complexity and wastes of resources to some extent. Furthermore, there are some correlations in activity recognition and person identification tasks. In this work, we propose a multiscale residual attention network (MRA-Net) for joint activity recognition and person identification with radar micro-Doppler signatures. A fine-grained loss weight learning (FLWL) mechanism is presented for elaborating a multitask loss to optimize MRA-Net. In addition, we construct a new radar micro-Doppler dataset with dual labels of activity and identity. With the proposed model trained on this dataset, we demonstrate that our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance in both radar-based activity recognition and person identification tasks. The impact of the FLWL mechanism was further investigated, and ablation studies of the efficacy of each component in MRA-Net were also conducted.

Today’s smartphones are equipped with embedded sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, which have enabled a variety of measurements and recognition tasks. In this paper, we jointly investigate two types of recognition problems in a joint manner, e.g., human activity recognition and smartphone on-body position recognition, in order to enable more robust context-aware applications. So far, these two problems have been studied separately without considering the interactions between each other. In this study, by first applying a novel data preprocessing technique, we propose a joint recognition framework based on the multi-task learning strategy, which can reduce computational demand, better exploit complementary information between the two recognition tasks, and lead to higher recognition performance. We also extend the joint recognition framework so that additional information, such as user identification with biometric motion analysis, can be offered. We evaluate our work systematically and comprehensively on two datasets with real-world settings. Our joint recognition model achieves the promising performance of 0.9174 in terms of F 1 -score for user identification on the benchmark RealWorld Human Activity Recognition (HAR) dataset. On the other hand, in comparison with the conventional approach, the proposed joint model is shown to be able to improve human activity recognition and position recognition by 5.1 % and 9.6 % respectively.

Radar, as one of the sensors for human activity recognition (HAR), has unique characteristics such as privacy protection and contactless sensing. Radar-based HAR has been applied in many fields such as human–computer interaction, smart surveillance and health assessment. Conventional machine learning approaches rely on heuristic hand-crafted feature extraction, and their generalization capability is limited. Additionally, extracting features manually is time–consuming and inefficient. Deep learning acts as a hierarchical approach to learn high-level features automatically and has achieved superior performance for HAR. This paper surveys deep learning based HAR in radar from three aspects: deep learning techniques, radar systems, and deep learning for radar-based HAR. Especially, we elaborate deep learning approaches designed for activity recognition in radar according to the dimension of radar returns (i.e., 1D, 2D and 3D echoes). Due to the difference of echo forms, corresponding deep learning approaches are different to fully exploit motion information. Experimental results have demonstrated the feasibility of applying deep learning for radar-based HAR in 1D, 2D and 3D echoes. Finally, we address some current research considerations and future opportunities.

Ultra-wideband radar-based penetrating detection and recognition of human activities has become a focus on remote sensing in various military applications in recent years, such as urban warfare, hostage rescue, and earthquake post-disaster rescue. However, an excellent micro-Doppler signature (MDS) extracting method of human motion with high time-frequency resolution, outstanding anti-interference ability, and extensive adaptability, which aims to provide favorable and more detailed features for human activity recognition and classification, especially in the non-free space detection environment, is in great urgency. To cope with the issue, a multiple Hilbert-Huang transform (MHHT) method is proposed for high-resolution time-frequency analysis of finer-grained human activity MDS hidden in ultra-wideband (UWB) radar echoes during the through-wall detection environment. Based on the improved HHT with effective intrinsic mode function (IMF) selection according to the cosine similarity (CS) principle, the improved HHT is applied to each channel signal in the effective channel scope of the UWB radar signal and then integrated along the range direction. The activities of swinging one or two arms while standing at a spot 3 m from a wall were used to validate the abilities of the proposed method for extracting and separating the MDS of different moving body structures with a high time-frequency resolution. Simultaneously, the corresponding relationship between the frequency components in MHHT-based spectra and structures of the moving human body was demonstrated according to the radar Doppler principle combined with the principle of human body kinematics. Moreover, six common finer-grained human activities and a piaffe at different ranges under the through-wall detection environment were exploited to confirm the adaptability of the novel method for different activities and pre-eminent anti-interference ability under a low signal-noise-clutter ratio (SNCR) environment, which is critical for remote sensing in various military application, such as urban warfare, hostage rescue, earthquake post-disaster rescue. According to the real-living environment, radar-based human activity recognition (HAR) is dedicated to recognizing and classifying a sequence of activities rather than individual activities, thereby drawing more attention in practical applications of security surveillance, health care and human–computer interactions. This paper proposes a parallelism long short-term memory (LSTM) framework with the input of multi-frequency spectrograms to implement continuous HAR. Specifically, frequency-division short-time Fourier transformation (STFT) is performed on the data stream of continuous activities collected by a stepped-frequency continuous-wave (SFCW) radar, generating spectrograms of multiple frequencies which introduce different scattering properties and frequency resolutions. In the designed parallelism LSTM framework, multiple parallel LSTM sub-networks are trained separately to extract different temporal features from the spectrogram of each frequency and produce corresponding classification probabilities. At the decision level, the probabilities of activity classification from these sub-networks are fused by addition as the recognition output. To validate the proposed method, an experimental data set is collected by using an SFCW radar to monitor 11 participants who continuously perform six activities in sequence with three different transitions and random durations. The validation results demonstrate that the average accuracies of the designed parallelism unidirectional LSTM (Uni-LSTM) and bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM) based on five frequency spectrograms are 85.41% and 96.15%, respectively, outperforming traditional Uni-LSTM and Bi-LSTM networks with only a single-frequency spectrogram by 5.35% and 6.33% at least. Additionally, the recognition accuracy of the parallelism LSTM network reveals an upward trend as the number of multi-frequency spectrograms (namely the number of LSTM subnetworks) increases, and tends to be stable when the number reaches 4. High-quality data for REDD+ monitoring, measurement, and reporting are critical for the continued success of REDD+ implementation and Results-Based Payments. Collect Earth is a free, user-friendly, and open-source software for land monitoring developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The tool allows countries to undertake land monitoring easily and rapidly through a sample-based approach and generate Activity Data (data on the magnitude of human activity resulting in emissions or removals during a given period of time) through augmented visual interpretation with low costs. Under the Paris Agreement, countries will have to update the greenhouse gas inventories that they report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change every two years through the Biennial Update Reports. One of the important benefits of using sample-based approaches such as the one proposed by Collect Earth is the possibility to achieve a detailed classification of the land-use sub-categories with high accuracy of the estimates for land-use changes occurring since 2000. However, most guidance documents developed for capacity building in developing countries for REDD+ reporting only advocate developing land-cover and land-cover change maps using remote sensing. As several countries already use Collect Earth and the sample-based methodology to report on REDD+, this commentary advocates for a more representative approach and a methodological debate on the potential of sample-based approaches using remote sensing, and when possible combined with ground truthing, to estimate Activity Data for REDD+ and countries' greenhouse gas inventories for the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use sector in general. Characterizing roads is important for conservation since the relationship between road use and ecological impact can vary across species. However, road use is challenging to monitor due to limited data and high spatial-temporal variability, especially for unpaved roads, which often coincide with critical habitats. In this study, we developed and evaluated two methods to characterize off-highway road use across a large management area of grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) habitat using: (1) a 'network-based' approach to connect human activity hotspots identified from social media posts and remotely detected disturbances and (2) an 'image-based' approach, in which we modeled road surface conditions and travel speed from high spatial resolution satellite imagery trained with crowd-sourced smartphone data. To assess the differences between these approaches and their utility for characterizing roads in the context of habitat integrity, we evaluated how behavioural patterns of global positioning system (GPS)-collared grizzly bears were related to road use characterized by these methods compared to (a) assuming all roads have equal human activity and (b) using a 'reference' road classification from a government database. The network- and image-based methods showed similar patterns of road use and grizzly bear response compared to the reference, and all three revealed nocturnal behaviour near high-use roads and better predicted grizzly bear habitat selection compared to assuming all roads had equal human activity. Pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR), enabled by smartphones' embedded inertial sensors, is widely applied as a type of indoor positioning system (IPS). However, traditional PDR faces two challenges to improve its accuracy: lack of robustness for different PDR-related human activities and positioning error accumulation over elapsed time. To cope with these issues, we propose a novel adaptive human activity-aided PDR (HAA-PDR) IPS that consists of two main parts, human activity recognition (HAR) and PDR optimization. (1) For HAR, eight different locomotion-related activities are divided into two classes: steady-heading activities (ascending/descending stairs, stationary, normal walking, stationary stepping, and lateral walking) and non-steady-heading activities (door opening and turning). A hierarchical combination of a support vector machine (SVM) and decision tree (DT) is used to recognize steady-heading activities. An autoencoder-based deep neural network (DNN) and a heading range-based method to recognize door opening and turning, respectively. The overall HAR accuracy is over 98.44%. (2) For optimization methods, a process automatically sets the parameters of the PDR differently for different activities to enhance step counting and step length estimation. Furthermore, a method of trajectory optimization mitigates PDR error accumulation utilizing the non-steady-heading activities. We divided the trajectory into small segments and reconstructed it after targeted optimization of each segment. Our method does not use any a priori knowledge of the building layout, plan, or map. Finally, the mean positioning error of our HAA-PDR in a multilevel building is 1.79 m, which is a significant improvement in accuracy compared with a baseline state-of-the-art PDR system. The Białowieża Forest (BF), a unique ecosystem of historical significance in central Europe, has a long history of assumed human settlement, with at least 200 known archaeological sites (until 2016). This study uncovers new evidence of the cultural heritage of this unique forest area using Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) technology combined with traditional archaeological field assessment methods to verify the ALS data interpretations and to provide additional evidence about the function and origin of the newly detected archaeological sites. The results of this study include (1) a scientific approach for an improved identification of archaeological resources in forest areas; (2) new evidence about the history of the human use of the BF based on ALS data, covering the entire Polish part of the BF; and (3) an improved remote sensing infrastructure, supporting existing GIS (Geographic Information System) systems for the BF, a famous UNESCO Heritage site. Our study identified numerous locations with evidence of past human agricultural activities known in the literature as "field systems", "lynchets" and "Celtic fields". The initial identification included more than 300 km of possible field boundaries and plough headlands, many of which we have verified on the ground. Various past human activities creating those boundaries have existed since the (pre-) Roman Period up to the 13th century AD. The results of this study demonstrate that past human activities in the Polish part of the Białowieża Forest had been more prevalent than previously believed. As a practical result of the described activities, a geodatabase was created; this has practical applications for the system of monument protection in Poland, as well as for local communities and the BF's management and conservation. The more widely achieved results are in line with the implementation of the concept of a cultural heritage inventory in forested and protected areas—the actions taken specify (built globally) the forms of protection and management of cultural and environmental goods. Short-range radar has become one of the latest sensor technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT), and it plays an increasingly vital role in IoT applications. As the essential task for various smart-sensing applications, radar-based human activity recognition and person identification have received more attention due to radar's robustness to the environment and low power consumption. Activity recognition and person identification are generally treated as separate problems. However, designing different networks for these two tasks brings a high computational complexity and wastes of resources to some extent. Furthermore, there are some correlations in activity recognition and person identification tasks. In this work, we propose a multiscale residual attention network (MRA-Net) for joint activity recognition and person identification with radar micro-Doppler signatures. A fine-grained loss weight learning (FLWL) mechanism is presented for elaborating a multitask loss to optimize MRA-Net. In addition, we construct a new radar micro-Doppler dataset with dual labels of activity and identity. With the proposed model trained on this dataset, we demonstrate that our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance in both radar-based activity recognition and person identification tasks. The impact of the FLWL mechanism was further investigated, and ablation studies of the efficacy of each component in MRA-Net were also conducted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Today's smartphones are equipped with embedded sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, which have enabled a variety of measurements and recognition tasks. In this paper, we jointly investigate two types of recognition problems in a joint manner, e.g., human activity recognition and smartphone on-body position recognition, in order to enable more robust context-aware applications. So far, these two problems have been studied separately without considering the interactions between each other. In this study, by first applying a novel data preprocessing technique, we propose a joint recognition framework based on the multi-task learning strategy, which can reduce computational demand, better exploit complementary information between the two recognition tasks, and lead to higher recognition performance. We also extend the joint recognition framework so that additional information, such as user identification with biometric motion analysis, can be offered. We evaluate our work systematically and comprehensively on two datasets with real-world settings. Our joint recognition model achieves the promising performance of 0.9174 in terms of F 1 -score for user identification on the benchmark RealWorld Human Activity Recognition (HAR) dataset. On the other hand, in comparison with the conventional approach, the proposed joint model is shown to be able to improve human activity recognition and position recognition by 5.1 % and 9.6 % respectively. Nighttime light observations from remote sensing provide us with a timely and spatially explicit measure of human activities, and therefore enable a host of applications such as tracking urbanization and socioeconomic dynamics, evaluating armed conflicts and disasters, investigating fisheries, assessing greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, and analyzing light pollution and health effects. The new and improved sensors, algorithms, and products for nighttime lights, in association with other Earth observations and ancillary data (e.g., geo-located big data), together offer great potential for a deep understanding of human activities and related environmental consequences in a changing world. This paper reviews the advances of nighttime light sensors and products and examines the contributions of nighttime light remote sensing to perceiving the changing world from two aspects (i.e., human activities and environmental changes). Based on the historical review of the advances in nighttime light remote sensing, we summarize the challenges in current nighttime light remote sensing research and propose four strategic directions, including: Improving nighttime light data; developing a long time series of consistent nighttime light data; integrating nighttime light observations with other data and knowledge; and promoting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary analyses of nighttime light observations. Radar, as one of the sensors for human activity recognition (HAR), has unique characteristics such as privacy protection and contactless sensing. Radar-based HAR has been applied in many fields such as human–computer interaction, smart surveillance and health assessment. Conventional machine learning approaches rely on heuristic hand-crafted feature extraction, and their generalization capability is limited. Additionally, extracting features manually is time–consuming and inefficient. Deep learning acts as a hierarchical approach to learn high-level features automatically and has achieved superior performance for HAR. This paper surveys deep learning based HAR in radar from three aspects: deep learning techniques, radar systems, and deep learning for radar-based HAR. Especially, we elaborate deep learning approaches designed for activity recognition in radar according to the dimension of radar returns (i.e., 1D, 2D and 3D echoes). Due to the difference of echo forms, corresponding deep learning approaches are different to fully exploit motion information. Experimental results have demonstrated the feasibility of applying deep learning for radar-based HAR in 1D, 2D and 3D echoes.
