The ecological environment of the Yellow River Basin in China is characterized by drought, which has been exacerbated by global warming. It is critical to keep accurate track of the region’s agricultural drought conditions. To enhance the vegetation health index (VHI), the optimal time scale for the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) was determined by using the maximum correlation coefficient method, and the calculation method for VHI was optimized. The contributions of the vegetation condition index (VCI) and the temperature condition index (TCI) to the VHI were scientifically optimized, leading to the development of the optimal VHI (VHIopt). Soil moisture anomaly (SMA) and the SPEI were employed for assessing the performance of VHIopt. Furthermore, the temporal and spatial evolution of agricultural drought in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) was analyzed using VHIopt. The results indicate the following: (1) In the YRB, the optimal contribution of the VCI to the VHI is lower than that of the TCI. (2) The drought monitoring accuracy of VHIopt in forests, grasslands, croplands, and other vegetation types exceeds that of the original VHI (VHIori). Additionally, it demonstrates a high level of consistency with the SMA and the SPEI03 regarding spatial and temporal characteristics. (3) Agricultural drought in the YRB is gradually diminishing; however, significant regional differences remain. Generally, the findings of this study highlight that VHIopt is better suited to the specific climate and vegetation conditions of the Yellow River Basin, enhancing its effectiveness for agricultural drought monitoring in this region.

Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (Global Precipitation Measurement) (IMERG) is the primary high spatiotemporal resolution precipitation product of the GPM era. To assess the applicability of the latest released IMERG_V07 in mainland China, this study systematically evaluates the error characteristics of IMERG_V07 from the perspective of different seasons, precipitation intensity, topography, and climate regions on an hourly scale. Ground-based meteorological observations are used as the reference, and the performance improvement of IMERG_V07 relative to IMERG_V06 is verified. Error evaluation is conducted in terms of precipitation amount and precipitation frequency, and an improved error component procedure is utilized to trace the error sources. The results indicate that IMERG_V07 exhibits a smaller RMSE in mainland China, especially with significant improvements in the southeastern region. IMERG_V07 shows better consistency with ground station data. IMERG_V07 shows an overall improvement of approximately 4% in capturing regional average precipitation events compared to IMERG_V06, with the northwest region showing particularly notable enhancement. The error components of IMERG_V06 and IMERG_V07 exhibit similar spatial distributions. IMERG_V07 outperforms V06 in terms of lower Missed bias but slightly underperforms in Hit bias and False bias compared to IMERG_V06. IMERG_V07 shows improved ability in capturing precipitation frequency for different intensities, but challenges remain in capturing heavy precipitation events, missing light precipitation, and winter precipitation events. Both IMERG_V06 and IMERG_V07 exhibit notable topography dependency in terms of Total bias and error components. False bias is the primary error source for both versions, except in winter, where high-altitude regions (DEM > 1200 m) primarily contribute to Missed bias. IMERG_V07 has enhanced the accuracy of precipitation retrieval in high-altitude areas, but there are still limitations in capturing precipitation events. Compared to IMERG_V06, IMERG_V07 demonstrates more concentrated error component values in the four climatic regions, with reduced data dispersion and significant improvement in Missed bias. The algorithm improvements in IMERG_V07 have the most significant impact in arid regions. False bias serves as the primary error source for both satellite-based precipitation estimations in the four climatic regions, with a secondary contribution from Hit bias. The evaluation results of this study offer scientific references for enhancing the algorithm of IMERG products and enhancing users’ understanding of error characteristics and sources in IMERG.

A thorough evaluation of the recently released Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) is critical for both end-users and algorithm developers. In this study, six products from three versions of GSMaP version 8, including real time (NOW-R and NOW-C), near real time (NRT-R and NRT-C), and post-real time (MVK-R and MVK-C), are systematically and quantitatively evaluated based on time-by-time observations from 2167 stations in mainland China. Among each version, both products with and without gauge correction are adopted to detect the gauge correction effect. Error quantification is carried out on an hourly timescale. Three common statistical indices (i.e., correlation coefficient (CC), relative bias (RB), and root mean square error (RMSE)) and three event detection capability indices (i.e., probability of detection (POD), false alarm ratio (FAR), and critical success index (CSI)) were adopted to analyze the inversion errors in precipitation amount and precipitation event frequency across the various products. Additionally, in this study, we examine the dependence of GSMaP errors on rainfall intensity and elevation. The following main results can be concluded: (1) MVK-C exhibits the best ability to retrieve rainfall on the hourly timescale, with higher CC values (0.31 in XJ to 0.47 in SC), smaller RMSE values (0.14 mm/h in XJ to 0.99 mm/h in SC), and lower RB values (−4.78% in XJ to 16.03% in NC). (2) Among these three versions, the gauge correction procedure plays a crucial role in reducing errors, especially in the post-real-time version. After being corrected, MVK-C demonstrates an obvious CC value improvement (>0.3 on the hourly timescale) in various sub-regions, increasing the percentage of sites with CC values above 0.5 from 0.03% (MVK-R) to 28.47% (MVK-C). (3) GSMaP products generally exhibit error dependencies on precipitation intensity and elevation, particularly in areas with drastic elevation changes (such as 1200–1500 m and 3000–3300 m), where the accuracy of satellite precipitation estimates is significantly affected. (4) CC values decreased with an increasing rainfall intensity; RB and RMSE values increased with an increasing rainfall intensity. The results of this study may be helpful for algorithm developers and end-users and provide a scientific reference for different hydrological applications and disaster risk reduction.

Multispectral and hyperspectral image fusion (MHF) aims to reconstruct high-resolution hyperspectral images by fusing spatial and spectral information. Unlike the traditional canonical polyadic decomposition and Tucker decomposition models, the block-term tensor decomposition model is able to improve the quality of fused images using known endmember and abundance information. This paper presents an improved hyperspectral image fusion algorithm. Firstly, the two abundance matrices are combined into a single bulk matrix to promote structural sparsity by introducing the L2,1-norm to eliminate the scaling effects present in the model. Secondly, the counter-scaling effect is eliminated by adding the L2-norm to the endmember matrix. Finally, the chunk matrix and the endmember matrix are coupled together, and the matrix is reorganized by adding the L2,1-norm to the matrix to facilitate chunk elimination and solved using an extended iterative reweighted least squares (IRLS) method, focusing on the problem of the inability to accurately estimate the tensor rank in the chunk-term tensor decomposition model and the noise/artifact problem arising from overestimation of rank. Experiments are conducted on standard and local datasets, and the fusion results are compared and analyzed in four ways: visual result analysis, metric evaluation, time of the algorithm, and classification results, and the experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than the existing methods. An extensive performance evaluation of the algorithms is performed by conducting experiments on different datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves significant improvements in terms of reconstruction error, signal-to-noise ratio, and image quality compared with the existing methods. Especially in the case of a low signal-to-noise ratio, the proposed algorithm shows stronger robustness and accuracy. These results show that the proposed algorithm has significant advantages in dealing with multispectral high-resolution hyperspectral data.

The problem of multispectral and hyperspectral image fusion (MHF) is to reconstruct images by fusing the spatial information of multispectral images and the spectral information of hyperspectral images. Focusing on the problem that the hyperspectral canonical polyadic decomposition model and the Tucker model cannot introduce the physical interpretation of the latent factors into the framework, it is difficult to use the known properties and abundance of endmembers to generate high-quality fusion images. This paper proposes a new fusion algorithm. In this paper, a coupled non-negative block-term tensor model is used to estimate the ideal high spatial resolution hyperspectral images, its sparsity is characterized by adding 1-norm, and total variation (TV) is introduced to describe piecewise smoothness. Secondly, the different operators in two directions are defined and introduced to characterize their piecewise smoothness. Finally, the proximal alternating optimization (PAO) algorithm and the alternating multiplier method (ADMM) are used to iteratively solve the model. Experiments on two standard datasets and two local datasets show that the performance of this method is better than the state-of-the-art methods.

In recent years, with the rapid growth of State Grid digitization, it has become necessary to perform three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of power elements with high efficiency and precision to achieve full coverage when simulating important transmission lines. Limited by the performance of acquisition equipment and the environment, the actual scanned point cloud usually has problems such as noise interference and data loss, presenting a great challenge for 3D reconstruction. This study proposes a model-driven 3D reconstruction method based on Airborne LiDAR point cloud data. Firstly, power pylon redirection is realized based on the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithm. Secondly, the vertical and horizontal distribution characteristics of the power pylon point cloud and the graphical characteristics of the overall two-dimensional (2D) orthographic projection are analyzed to determine segmentation positions and the key segmentation position of the power pylon. The 2D alpha shape algorithm is adopted to obtain the pylon body contour points, and then the pylon feature points are extracted and corrected. Based on feature points, the components of original pylon and model pylon are registered, and the distance between the original point cloud and the model point cloud is calculated at the same time. Finally, the model with the highest matching degree is regarded as the reconstructed model of the pylon. The main advantages of the proposed method include: (1) identifying the key segmentation position according to the graphical characteristics; (2) for some pylons with much missing data, the complete model can be accurately reconstructed. The average RMSE (Root-Mean-Square Error) of all power pylon components in this study was 15.4 cm. The experimental results reveal that the effects of power pylon structure segmentation and reconstruction are satisfactory, which provides method and model support for digital management and security analysis of transmission lines.

Grassland aboveground biomass is crucial for evaluating grassland desertification, degradation, and grassland and livestock balance. Given the lack of understanding of mechanical processes and limited simulation accuracy for grassland aboveground biomass estimation, especially at the regional scale, this study investigates a new method combining remote sensing data assimilation technology and a grassland process-based model to estimate regional grassland biomass, focusing on improving the simulation accuracy by modeling and revealing the mechanism interpretability of grassland growth processes. Xilinhot City of Inner Mongolia was used as the study area. The ModVege model was selected as the grass dynamic simulation model. A likelihood function was constructed composed of the LAI, grassland aboveground biomass, and daily measurements wherein the accumulated temperature reached ST2 (the temperature sum defining the end of reproductive growth). Then, the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methodology was adapted to calibrate the ModVege model by maximizing the likelihood function. The time-series LAI from MOD15A3H was assimilated into the ModVege model, and the model parameters ST2 and BMGV0 (initial biomass and green vegetative tissues, respectively) were optimized at a 500 m pixel scale based on the four-dimensional variational method (4DVar) method. Compared with August 15th, the RMSE and MAPE of aboveground biomass were 242 kg/ha and 10%, respectively, after calibration. Data assimilation improved this accuracy, with the RMSE decreasing to 214 kg/ha. Overall, the aboveground grassland biomass of Xilinhot City shows spatial distribution patterns of high value in the northeast and low value in the central and southeast areas. Generally, the method implemented in this study provides an important reference for the aboveground biomass estimation of regional grassland.

Heterogeneous synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images contain more complementary information compared with homologous SAR images; thus, the comprehensive utilization of heterogeneous SAR images could potentially improve performance for the monitoring of sea surface objects, such as sea ice and enteromorpha. Image registration is key to the application of monitoring sea surface objects. Heterogeneous SAR images have intensity differences and resolution differences, and after the uniform resolution, intensity differences are one of the most important factors affecting the image registration accuracy. In addition, sea surface objects have numerous repetitive and confusing features for feature extraction, which also limits the image registration accuracy. In this paper, we propose an improved L2Net network for image registration with intensity differences and repetitive texture features, using sea ice as the research object. The deep learning network can capture feature correlations between image patch pairs, and can obtain the correct matching from a large number of features with repetitive texture. In the SAR image pair, four patches of different sizes centered on the corner points are proposed as inputs. Thus, local features and more global features are fused to obtain excellent structural features, to distinguish between different repetitive textural features, add contextual information, further improve the feature correlation, and improve the accuracy of image registration. An outlier removal strategy is proposed to remove false matches due to repetitive textures. Finally, the effectiveness of our method was verified by comparative experiments.

Grasslands, as an important part of terrestrial ecosystems, are facing serious threats of land degradation. Therefore, the remote monitoring of grasslands is an important tool to control degradation and protect grasslands. However, the existing methods are often disturbed by clouds and fog, which makes it difficult to achieve all-weather and all-time grassland remote sensing monitoring. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data can penetrate clouds, which is helpful for solving this problem. In this study, we verified the advantages of the fusion of multi-spectral (MS) and SAR data for improving classification accuracy, especially for cloud-covered areas. We also proposed an adaptive feature fusion method (the SK-like method) based on an attention mechanism, and tested two types of patch construction strategies, single-size and multi-size patches. Experiments have shown that the proposed SK-like method with single-size patches obtains the best results, with 93.12% accuracy and a 0.91 average f1-score, which is a 1.02% accuracy improvement and a 0.01 average f1-score improvement compared with the commonly used feature concatenation method. Our results show that the all-weather, all-time remote sensing monitoring of grassland is possible through the fusion of MS and SAR data with suitable feature fusion methods, which will effectively enhance the regulatory capability of grassland resources.

Long-term satellite-based precipitation estimates (LSPE) play a significant role in climatological studies like drought monitoring. In this study, three popular LSPEs (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks–Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR), Rainfall Estimates from Rain Gauge and Satellite Observations (CHIRPS) and Multi-Source Weighted-Ensemble Precipitation (MSWEP)) were evaluated on a monthly scale using ground-based stations for capturing drought event characteristics over northwestern China from 1983 to 2013. To reflect dry or wet evolution, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was adopted, and the Run theory was used to identify drought events and their characteristics. The conventional statistical indices (relative bias (RB), correlation coefficient (CC), and root mean square error (RMSE)), as well as categorical indices (probability of detection (POD), false alarm ratio (FAR), and missing ratio (MISS)) are used to evaluate the capability of LSPEs in estimating precipitation and drought characteristics. We found that: (1) three LSPEs showed generally satisfactory performance in estimating precipitation and characterizing drought events. Although LSPEs have acceptable performance in identifying drought events with POD greater than 60%, they still have a high false alarm ratio (>27%) and a high missing ratio (>33%); (2) three LSPEs tended to overestimate drought severity, mainly because of an overestimation of drought duration; (3) the ability of CHIRPS to replicate the temporal evolution of precipitation and SPI values is limited; (4) in severe drought events, PERSIANN-CDR tends to overestimate precipitation, and drought severity, as well as drought area; (5) among the three LSPEs, MSWEP outperformed the other two in identifying drought events (POD > 66%) and characterizing drought features. Finally, we recommend MSWEP for drought monitoring studies due to its high accuracy in estimating drought characteristics over northwestern China. In drought monitoring applications, the overestimation of PERSIANN-CDR for drought peak value and area, as well as CHIRPS’s inferiority in capturing drought temporal evolution, must be considered.

High-quality training samples are essential for accurate land cover classification. Due to the difficulties in collecting a large number of training samples, it is of great significance to collect a high-quality sample dataset with a limited sample size but effective sample distribution. In this paper, we proposed an object-oriented sampling approach by segmenting image blocks expanded from systematically distributed seeds (object-oriented sampling approach) and carried out a rigorous comparison of seven sampling strategies, including random sampling, systematic sampling, stratified sampling (stratified sampling with the strata of land cover classes based on classification product, Latin hypercube sampling, and spatial Latin hypercube sampling), object-oriented sampling, and manual sampling, to explore the impact of training sample distribution on the accuracy of land cover classification when the samples are limited. Five study areas from different climate zones were selected along the China–Mongolia border. Our research identified the proposed object-oriented sampling approach as the first-choice sampling strategy in collecting training samples. This approach improved the diversity and completeness of the training sample set. Stratified sampling with strata defined by the combination of different attributes and stratified sampling with the strata of land cover classes had their limitations, and they performed well in specific situations when we have enough prior knowledge or high-accuracy product. Manual sampling was greatly influenced by the experience of interpreters. All these sampling strategies mentioned above outperformed random sampling and systematic sampling in this study. The results indicate that the sampling strategies of training datasets do have great impacts on the land cover classification accuracies when the sample size is limited. This paper will provide guidance for efficient training sample collection to increase classification accuracies.

The CO2 efflux from forest soil (FCO2) is one of the largest components of the global carbon cycle. Accurate estimation of FCO2 can help us better understand the carbon cycle in forested areas and precisely predict future climate change. However, the scarcity of field-measured FCO2 data in the subtropical forested area greatly limits our understanding of FCO2 dynamics at regional and global scales. This study used an automatic cavity ring-down spectrophotometer (CRDS) analyzer to measure FCO2 in a typical subtropical forest of southern China in the dry season. We found that the measured FCO2 at two experimental areas experienced similar temporal trends in the dry season and reached the minima around December, whereas the mean FCO2 differed apparently across the two areas (9.05 vs. 5.03 g C m−2 day−1) during the dry season. Moreover, we found that both abiotic (soil temperature and moisture) and biotic (vegetation productivity) factors are significantly and positively correlated, respectively, with the FCO2 variation during the study period. Furthermore, a machine-learning random forest model (RF model) that incorporates remote sensing data is developed and used to predict the FCO2 pattern in the subtropical forest, and the topographic effects on spatiotemporal patterns of FCO2 were further investigated. The model evaluation indicated that the proposed model illustrated high prediction accuracy for the training and testing dataset. Based on the proposed model, the spatiotemporal patterns of FCO2 in the forested watershed that encloses the two monitoring sites were mapped. Results showed that the spatial distribution of FCO2 is obviously affected by topography: the high FCO2 values mainly occur in relatively high altitudinal areas, in slopes of 10–25°, and in sunny slopes. The results emphasized that future studies should consider topographical effects when simulating FCO2 in subtropical forests. Overall, our study unraveled the spatiotemporal variations of FCO2 and their driving factors in a subtropical forest of southern China in the dry season, and demonstrated that the proposed RF model in combination with remote sensing data can be a useful tool for predicting FCO2 in forested areas, particularly in subtropical and tropical forest ecosystems.

Identifying ecologically vulnerable areas and understanding the responses of phenology to negative changes in vegetation growth are important bases for ecological restoration. However, identifying ecologically vulnerable areas is difficult because it requires high spatial resolution and dense temporal resolution data over a long time period. In this study, a novel method is presented to identify ecologically vulnerable areas based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series from MOD09A1. Here, ecologically vulnerable areas are defined as those that experienced negative changes frequently and greatly in vegetation growth after the disturbances during 2000–2018. The number and magnitude of negative changes detected by the Breaks for Additive Season and Trend (BFAST) algorithm based on the NDVI time-series data were combined to identify ecologically vulnerable areas. TIMESAT was then used to extract the phenology metrics from an NDVI time series dataset to characterize the vegetation responses due to the abrupt negative changes detected by the BFAST algorithm. Focus was given to Jilin Province, a region of China known to be ecologically vulnerable because of frequent drought. The results showed that 13.52% of the study area, mostly in Jilin Province, is ecologically vulnerable. The vulnerability of trees is the lowest, while that of sparse vegetation is the highest. The response of phenology is such that the relative amount of vegetation biomass and length of the growing period were decreased by negative changes in growth for dense vegetation types. The present research results will be useful for the protection of environments being disturbed by regional ecological restoration.

Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP), Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Preconception with Station data (CHIRPS), Tropical Rain Measurement Mission Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TRMM 3B42 V7) and Rainfall Estimation from Soil Moisture Observations (SM2RAIN) are satellite precipitation products with high applicability, but their applicability in hydrological research in arid mountainous areas is not clear. Based on precipitation and runoff data, this study evaluated the applicability of each product to hydrological research in a typical mountainous basin (the Qaraqash River basin) in an arid region by using two methods: a statistical index and a hydrological model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool, SWAT). Simulation results were evaluated by Nash efficiency coefficient (NS), relative error (PBIAS) and determination coefficient (R2). The results show that: (1) The spatial distributions of precipitation estimated by these four products in the Qaraqash River basin are significantly different, and the multi-year average annual precipitation of GSMaP is 97.11 mm, which is the closest to the weather station interpolation results. (2) On the annual and monthly scales, GSMaP has the highest correlation (R ≥ 0.82) with the observed precipitation and the smallest relative error (BIAS < 6%). On the seasonal scale, the inversion accuracy of GSMaP in spring, summer and autumn is significantly higher than other products. In winter, all four sets of products perform poorly in estimating the actual precipitation. (3) Monthly runoff simulations based on SM2RAIN and GSMaP show good fitting (R2 > 0.6). In daily runoff simulation, GSMaP has the greatest ability to reproduce runoff changes. The study provides a reference for the optimization of precipitation image data and hydrological simulation in data-scarce areas.

Droughts are one of the costliest natural disasters. Reliable drought monitoring and prediction are valuable for drought relief management. This study monitors and predicts droughts in Xinjiang, an arid area in China, based on the three drought indicators, i.e., the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Standardized Soil Moisture Index (SSMI) and the Multivariate Standardized Drought Index (MSDI). Results indicate that although these three indicators could capture severe historical drought events in the study area, the spatial coverage, persistence and severity of the droughts would vary regarding different indicators. The MSDI could best describe the overall drought conditions by incorporating the characteristics of the SPI and SSMI. For the drought prediction, the predictive skill of all indicators gradually decayed with the increasing lead time. Specifically, the SPI only showed the predictive skill at a 1-month lead time, the MSDI performed best in capturing droughts at 1- to 2-month lead times and the SSMI was accurate up to a 3-month lead time owing to its high persistence. These findings might provide scientific support for the local drought management.

This paper examines the spatial error structures of eight precipitation estimates derived from four different satellite retrieval algorithms including TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH), Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN). All the original satellite and bias-corrected products of each algorithm (3B42RTV7 and 3B42V7, CMORPH_RAW and CMORPH_CRT, GSMaP_MVK and GSMaP_Gauge, PERSIANN_RAW and PERSIANN_CDR) are evaluated against ground-based Asian Precipitation-Highly Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of Water Resources (APHRODITE) over Central Asia for the period of 2004 to 2006. The analyses show that all products except PERSIANN exhibit overestimation over Aral Sea and its surrounding areas. The bias-correction improves the quality of the original satellite TMPA products and GSMaP significantly but slightly in CMORPH and PERSIANN over Central Asia. 3B42RTV7 overestimates precipitation significantly with large Relative Bias (RB) (128.17%) while GSMaP_Gauge shows consistent high correlation coefficient (CC) (>0.8) but RB fluctuates between −57.95% and 112.63%. The PERSIANN_CDR outperforms other products in winter with the highest CC (0.67). Both the satellite-only and gauge adjusted products have particularly poor performance in detecting rainfall events in terms of lower POD (less than 65%), CSI (less than 45%) and relatively high FAR (more than 35%).

Phenotyping provides important support for corn breeding. Unfortunately, the rapid detection of phenotypes has been the major limiting factor in estimating and predicting the outcomes of breeding programs. This study was focused on the potential of phenotyping to support corn breeding using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images, aiming at mining and deepening UAV techniques for comparing phenotypes and screening new corn varieties. Two geometric traits (plant height, canopy leaf area index (LAI)) and one lodging resistance trait (lodging area) were estimated in this study. It was found that stereoscopic and photogrammetric methods were promising ways to calculate a digital surface model (DSM) for estimating corn plant height from UAV images, with R2 = 0.7833 (p < 0.001) and a root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.1677. In addition to a height estimation, the height variation was analyzed for depicting and validating the corn canopy uniformity stability for different varieties. For the lodging area estimation, the normalized DSM (nDSM) method was more promising than the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) textural features method. The estimation error using the nDSM ranged from 0.8% to 5.3%, and the estimation error using the GLCM ranged from 10.0% to 16.2%. Associations between the height estimation and lodging area estimation were done to find the corn varieties with optimal plant heights and lodging resistance. For the LAI estimation, the physical radiative transfer PROSAIL model offered both an accurate and robust estimation performance both at the middle (R2 = 0.7490, RMSE = 0.3443) and later growing stages (R2 = 0.7450, RMSE = 0.3154). What was more exciting was that the estimated sequential time series LAIs revealed a corn variety with poor resistance to lodging in a study area of Baogaofeng Farm. Overall, UAVs appear to provide a promising method to support phenotyping for crop breeding, and the phenotyping of corn breeding in this study validated this application.

Coastal land cover classification is a significant yet challenging task in remote sensing because of the complex and fragmented nature of coastal landscapes. However, availability of multitemporal and multisensor remote sensing data provides opportunities to improve classification accuracy. Meanwhile, rapid development of deep learning has achieved astonishing results in computer vision tasks and has also been a popular topic in the field of remote sensing. Nevertheless, designing an effective and concise deep learning model for coastal land cover classification remains problematic. To tackle this issue, we propose a multibranch convolutional neural network (MBCNN) for the fusion of multitemporal and multisensor Sentinel data to improve coastal land cover classification accuracy. The proposed model leverages a series of deformable convolutional neural networks to extract representative features from a single-source dataset. Extracted features are aggregated through an adaptive feature fusion module to predict final land cover categories. Experimental results indicate that the proposed MBCNN shows good performance, with an overall accuracy of 93.78% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.9297. Inclusion of multitemporal data improves accuracy by an average of 6.85%, while multisensor data contributes to 3.24% of accuracy increase. Additionally, the featured fusion module in this study also increases accuracy by about 2% when compared with the feature-stacking method. Results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively mine and fuse multitemporal and multisource Sentinel data, which improves coastal land cover classification accuracy.

In this paper, Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks–Climate Data Record (PERSIANN-CDR) is analyzed for the assessment of meteorological drought. The evaluation is conducted over China at 0.5° spatial resolution against a ground-based gridded China monthly Precipitation Analysis Product (CPAP) from 1983 to 2014 (32 years). The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) at various time scales (1 month to 12 months) is calculated for detecting drought events. The results show that PERSIANN-CDR depicts similar drought behavior as the ground-based CPAP in terms of capturing the spatial and temporal patterns of drought events over eastern China, where the intensity of gauge networks and the frequency of droughts are high. 6-month SPI shows the best agreement with CPAP in identifying drought months. However, large differences between PERSIANN-CDR and CPAP in depicting drought patterns and identifying specific drought events are found over northwestern China, particularly in Xinjiang and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region. Factors behind this may be due to the relatively sparse gauge networks, the complicated terrain and the performance of PERSIANN algorithm.

Knowledge of current vegetation dynamics and an ability to make accurate predictions of ecological changes are essential for minimizing food scarcity in developing countries. Vegetation trends are also closely related to sustainability issues, such as management of conservation areas and wildlife habitats. In this study, AVHRR and MODIS NDVI datasets have been used to assess the spatial temporal dynamics of vegetation greenness in Rwanda under the contrasting trends of precipitation, for the period starting from 1990 to 2014, and for the first growing season (season A). Based on regression analysis and the Hurst exponent index methods, we have investigated the spatial temporal characteristics and the interrelationships between vegetation greenness and precipitation in light of NDVI and gridded meteorological datasets. The findings revealed that the vegetation cover was characterized by an increasing trend of a maximum annual change rate of 0.043. The results also suggest that 81.3% of the country’s vegetation has improved throughout the study period, while 14.1% of the country’s vegetation degraded, from slight (7.5%) to substantial (6.6%) deterioration. Most pixels with severe degradation were found in Kigali city and the Eastern Province. The analysis of changes per vegetation type highlighted that five types of vegetation are seriously endangered: The “mosaic grassland/forest or shrubland” was severely degraded, followed by “sparse vegetation,” “grassland or woody vegetation regularly flooded on water logged soil,” “artificial surfaces” and “broadleaved forest regularly flooded.” The Hurst exponent results indicated that the vegetation trend was consistent, with a sustainable area percentage of 40.16%, unsustainable area of 1.67% and an unpredictable area of 58.17%. This study will provide government and local authorities with valuable information for improving efficiency in the recently targeted countrywide efforts of environmental protection and regeneration.
