Aiming to address errors in the estimation of the position and attitude of an unmanned vessel, especially during vibration, where the rapid loss of feature point information hinders continuous attitude estimation and global trajectory mapping, this paper improves the monocular ORB-SLAM framework based on the characteristics of the marine environment. In general, we extract the location area of the artificial sea target in the video, build a virtual feature set for it, and filter the background features. When shaking occurs, GNSS information is combined and the target feature set is used to complete the map reconstruction task. Specifically, firstly, the sea target area of interest is detected by YOLOv5, and the feature extraction and matching method is optimized in the front-end tracking stage to adapt to the sea environment. In the key frame selection and local map optimization stage, the characteristics of the feature set are improved to further improve the positioning accuracy, to provide more accurate position and attitude information about the unmanned platform. We use GNSS information to provide the scale and world coordinates for the map. Finally, the target distance is measured by the beam ranging method. In this paper, marine unmanned platform data, GNSS, and AIS position data are autonomously collected, and experiments are carried out using the proposed marine ranging system. Experimental results show that the maximum measurement error of this method is 9.2%, and the average error is 4.7%.

In this study, wind speed sensitivity and calibration bias were first determined for Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite Ka-band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn) Normalized Radar Backscatter Cross Section (NRCS) data at VV and HH polarizations. Here, the calibration bias was estimated by comparing the KaRIn NRCS with collocated simulations from a model developed using Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) data. To recalibrate the bias, the correlation coefficient between the KaRIn data and the simulations was estimated, and the data with the corresponding top 10% correlation coefficients were used to estimate the recalibration coefficients. After recalibration, a Ka-band NRCS model was developed from the KaRIn data to retrieve ocean surface wind speeds. Finally, wind speed retrievals were evaluated using the collocated European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis winds, Haiyang-2C scatterometer (HY2C-SCAT) winds and National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) and Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) buoy winds. Evaluation results show that the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) at both polarizations is less than 1.52 m/s, 1.34 m/s and 1.57 m/s, respectively, when compared to ECMWF, HY2C-SCAT and buoy collocated winds. Moreover, both the bias and RMSE were constant with the incidence angles and polarizations. This indicates that the winds from the SWOT KaRIn data are capable of correcting the sea state bias for sea surface height products.

Research on coastal ocean circulation patterns over long time periods is significant for various marine endeavors: environmental protection, coastal engineering construction, and marine renewable energy extraction. Based on sea surface current data remotely observed using a shore-based high frequency radar (HFR) system for one year (2016), spatiotemporal characteristics of surface flow fields of sea surface flow fields along the west coast of Ireland are studied using harmonic analysis, rotary spectral analysis and representative flow fields over different seasons and the whole year. Coastal surface currents in the study area are strongly affected by tidal dynamics of the M2 constituent, showing significant characteristics of regular semidiurnal tide, such as M2 and S2. The energy spectrum distribution indicates that the tidal constituents M2 and S2 are the dominant periodic energy constituents in a counterclockwise spectrum, which mainly presents rotating flow; the representative diurnal tidal constituents is the constituent K1, and its energy spectrum distribution is mainly clockwise. A comparison between probable maximum current velocity (PMCV) and measured maximum current velocity (MMCV) is presented. It shows that although tidal current characteristics in the study area are significant, the main driving force of the currents at the time of the maximum currents is wind energy. These results provide new insights into a region of huge societal potential at early stages of sustainable economic exploitation where few data currently exist.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery plays an important role in observing tropical cyclones (TCs). However, the C-band attenuation caused by rain bands and the problem of signal saturation at high wind speeds make it impossible to retrieve the fine structure of TCs effectively. In this paper, a dual-level contextual attention generative adversarial network (DeCA-GAN) is tailored for reconstructing SAR wind speeds in TCs. The DeCA-GAN follows an encoder–neck–decoder architecture, which works well for high wind speeds and the reconstruction of a large range of low-quality data. A dual-level encoder comprising a convolutional neural network and a self-attention mechanism is designed to extract the local and global features of the TC structure. After feature fusion, the neck explores the contextual features to form a reconstructed outline and up-samples the features in the decoder to obtain the reconstructed results. The proposed deep learning model has been trained and validated using the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric model product and can be directly used to improve the data quality of SAR wind speeds. Wind speeds are reconstructed well in regions of low-quality SAR data. The root mean square error of the model output and ECMWF in these regions is halved in comparison with the existing SAR wind speed product for the test set. The results indicate that deep learning methods are effective for reconstructing SAR wind speeds.

Residual current characteristics are indicators for the net transports of sediments, nutrients, and pollutants, and for the dilution and diffusion of soluble substances in coastal areas, yet their driving mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we studied the characteristics of surface residual currents along the west coast of the island of Ireland, as well as the response mechanisms to wind at a seasonal scale based on the continuous observation data of high-frequency radar (HFR) for one year. Our analyses indicate that wind has a significant effect on generating surface residual currents, with correlation coefficients of 0.6–0.8 between wind speeds and residual current speeds at both annual and seasonal scales. However, the correlation between the directions of residual currents and the wind was not as significant as speed, likely because the directions of residual currents were not only affected by sea surface wind, but also by land boundary conditions in the research area. Moreover, the residual currents had a significant eastward flow trend identical to the wind direction at the maximum wind speed time, during which the effect of the tide on residual currents was relatively weak. Additionally, when compared with wind fields, HFR surface flow fields and surface residual current fields show that wind is the dominant driver of the variations of surface and residual flow fields. These findings shed light on coastal ecological and environmental management and can assist in the prevention and mitigation of marine disasters, by providing helpful information for improving the ability and accuracy of forecasting coastal currents.

Accurate information on tropical cyclone position, intensity, and structure is critical for storm surge prediction. Atmospheric reanalysis datasets can provide gridded, full coverage, long-term and multi-parameter atmospheric fields for the research on the impact of tropical cyclones on the upper ocean, which effectively makes up for the uneven temporal and spatial distribution of satellite remote sensing and in situ data. However, the reanalysis data cannot accurately describe characteristic parameters of tropical cyclones, especially in high wind conditions. In this paper, the performance of the tropical cyclone representation in ERA5 (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5th Generation) is investigated and analyzed with respect to IBTrACS (International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship) during the period 2018–2020. Comparisons demonstrate that ERA5 winds significantly underestimate the maximum wind speed during the tropical cyclones (>30 m/s) compared to those provided by IBTrACS. An effective wind reconstruction method is examined to enhance tropical cyclone intensity representation in reanalysis data in 94 cases of 31 tropical cyclones 2018–2020. The reconstructed wind speeds are in good agreement with the SFMR (Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer) measured data and SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) L-band radiometer remotely sensed measurements. The proposed wind reconstruction method can effectively improve the accuracy of the tropical cyclone representation in ERA5, and will benefit from the establishment of remote sensing satellite retrieval model and the forcing fields of the ocean model.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CyGNSS) mission was launched in December 2016, which can remotely sense sea surface wind with a relatively high spatio-temporal resolution for tracking tropical cyclones. In recent years, with the gradual development of the geophysical model function (GMF) for CyGNSS wind retrieval, different versions of CyGNSS Level 2 products have been released and their performance has gradually improved. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of CyGNSS wind product v1.1 produced by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Cross-Calibrated Multi-Platform (CCMP) analysis wind (v02.0 and v02.1 near real time) products produced by Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) were used as the reference. Data pairs between the NOAA CyGNSS and RSS CCMP products were processed and evaluated by the bias and standard deviation SD. The CyGNSS dataset covers the period between May 2017 and December 2020. The statistical comparisons show that the bias and SD of CyGNSS relative to CCMP-nonzero collocations when the flag of CCMP winds is nonzero are –0.05 m/s and 1.19 m/s, respectively. The probability density function (PDF) of the CyGNSS winds coincides with that of CCMP-nonzero. Furthermore, the average monthly bias and SD show that CyGNSS wind is consistent and reliable generally. We found that negative deviation mainly appears at high latitudes in both hemispheres. Positive deviation appears in the China Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the west of Africa and South America. Spatial–temporal analysis demonstrates the geographical anomalies in the bias and SD of the CyGNSS winds, confirming that the wind speed bias shows a temporal dependency. The verification and comparison show that the remotely sensed wind speed measurements from NOAA CyGNSS wind product v1.1 are in good agreement with CCMP winds.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are essential for many reasons, including their destruction of human lives and property and their effect on heat and nutrient fluxes between the ocean’s surface and its depths. A better understanding of ocean fluxes is needed to predict the impact of global climate change on the oceans and to quantify how ocean heat content modulates the dynamics of global climate change. Similarly, improved modeling of nutrient fluxes is crucial for maintaining fisheries and preserving crucial marine ecosystems to benefit both humanity and marine life. Numerous remote sensors measure crucial geophysical quantities before, during, and after TCs, including sea surface temperature (SST), ocean color, chlorophyll concentration, ocean surface winds, sea surface height, and significant wave height. In this special issue, an international group of researchers have written articles describing (1) novel techniques and remote sensors for measuring the aforementioned quantities in tropical cyclones, (2) methods for validating and improving the accuracy of those measurements and harmonizing them among different sensors, (3) scientific analyses that investigate the relationships between remote-sensed ocean surface measurements and in situ measurements of vertical profiles of ocean temperature, salinity, and current, and (4) strategies for utilizing remote-sensed measurements to improve operational forecasts in order to provide better tropical cyclone warnings to human populations.

Surface and deep potential geophysical signals respond to the spatial redistribution of global mass variations, which may be monitored by geodetic observations. In this study, we analyze dense Global Positioning System (GPS) time series in the Eastern Tibetan Plateau using principal component analysis (PCA) and wavelet time-frequency spectra. The oscillations of interannual and residual signals are clearly identified in the common mode component (CMC) decomposed from the dense GPS time series from 2000 to 2018. The newly developed spherical harmonic coefficients of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Release-06 (GRACE RL06) are adopted to estimate the seasonal and interannual patterns in this region, revealing hydrologic and atmospheric/nontidal ocean loads. We stack the averaged elastic GRACE-derived loading displacements to identify the potential physical significance of the CMC in the GPS time series. Interannual nonlinear signals with a period of ~3 to ~4 years in the CMC (the scaled principal components from PC1 to PC3) are found to be predominantly related to hydrologic loading displacements, which respond to signals (El Niño/La Niña) of global climate change. We find an obvious signal with a period of ~6 yr on the vertical component that could be caused by mantle-inner core gravity coupling. Moreover, we evaluate the CMC’s effect on the GPS-derived velocities and confirm that removing the CMC can improve the recognition of nontectonic crustal deformation, especially on the vertical component. Furthermore, the effects of the CMC on the three-dimensional velocity and uncertainty are presented to reveal the significant crustal deformation and dynamic processes of the Eastern Tibetan Plateau.

Satellite altimeters can capture storm surges generated by typhoons and tropical storms, if the satellite flies over at the right time. In this study, we show TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter-observed storm surge features off Southeast China on 10 October 1994 during Typhoon Seth. We then use a three-dimensional, barotropic, finite-volume community ocean model (FVCOM) to simulate storm surges. An innovative aspect is that satellite data are used to calibrate the storm surge model to improve model performance, by adjusting model wind forcing fields (the National Center for Environment Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis product) in reference to the typhoon best-track data. The calibration reduces the along-track root-mean-square (RMS) difference between model and altimetric data from 0.15 to 0.10 m. It also reduces the RMS temporal difference from 0.21 to 0.18 m between the model results and independent tide-gauge data at Xiamen. In particular, the calibrated model produces a peak storm surge of 1.01 m at 6:00 10 October 1994 at Xiamen, agreeing with tide-gauge data; while the peak storm surge with the NCEP forcing is 0.71 m only. We further show that the interaction between storm surges and astronomical tides contributes to the peak storm surge by 34% and that the storm surge propagates southwestward as a coastally-trapped Kelvin wave.

This study analyzed the noise equivalent sigma zero (NESZ) and ocean wind sensitivity for Chinese C-band Gaofen-3 (GF-3) quad-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) measurements to facilitate further operational wind extraction from GF-3 data. Data from the GF-3 quad-polarization SAR and collocated winds from both NOAA/NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS) atmospheric model and National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) buoys were used in the analysis. For NESZ, the co-polarization was slightly higher compared to the cross-polarization. Regarding co-polarization and cross-polarization, NESZ was close to RadarSAT-2 and Sentinel-1 A. Wind sensitivity was analyzed by evaluating the dependence on winds in terms of normalized radar cross-sections (NRCS) and polarization combinations. The closest geophysical model function (GMF) and the polarization ratio (PR) model to GF-3 data were determined by comparing data and the model results. The dependence of co-polarized NRCS on wind speed and azimuth angle was consistent with the proposed GMF models. The combination of CMOD5 and CMOD5.N was considered to be the closest GMF in co-polarization. The cross-polarized NRCS exhibited a strong linear relationship with moderate wind speeds higher than 4 m·s−1, but a weak correlation with the azimuth angle. The proposed model was considered as the closest GMF in cross-polarization. For polarization combinations, PR and polarization difference (PD) were considered. PR increased only with the incidence angle, whereas PD increased with wind speed and varied with azimuth angle. There were three very close PR models and each can be considered as the closest. Preliminary results indicate that GF-3 quad-polarization data are valid and have the ability to extract winds in each polarization.

Sea surface wind affects the fluxes of energy, mass and momentum between the atmosphere and ocean, and therefore regional and global weather and climate. With various satellite microwave sensors, sea surface wind can be measured with large spatial coverage in almost all-weather conditions, day or night. Like any other remote sensing measurements, sea surface wind measurement is also indirect. Therefore, it is important to develop appropriate wind speed and direction retrieval models for different types of microwave instruments. In this paper, a new sea surface wind direction retrieval method from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is developed. In the method, local gradients are computed in frequency domain by combining the operation of smoothing and computing local gradients in one step to simplify the process and avoid the difference approximation. This improved local gradients (ILG) method is compared with the traditional two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D FFT) method and local gradients (LG) method, using interpolating wind directions from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) reanalysis data and the Cross-Calibrated Multi-Platform (CCMP) wind vector product. The sensitivities to the salt-and-pepper noise, the additive noise and the multiplicative noise are analyzed. The ILG method shows a better performance of retrieval wind directions than the other two methods.
