Stripe noise is a general phenomenon in original remote sensing images that both degrades image quality and severely limits its quantitative application. While the classical statistical method is effective in correcting common stripes caused by inaccurately calibrating relative gains and offsets between detectors, it falls short in correcting other nonlinear stripe noises originating from subtle nonlinear changes or random contamination within the same detector. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel trend repair method based on two normal columns directly adjacent to a defective column to rectify the trend by considering the geospatial structure of contaminated pixels, eliminating residual stripe noise evident in level 0 (L0) remote sensing images after histogram matching. GF5-02 VIMI (Gaofen5-02, visual and infrared multispectral imager) images and simulated Landsat 8 thermal infrared sensor (TIRS) images deliberately infused with stripe noise are selected to test the new method and two other existing methods, the piece-wise method and the iterated weighted least squares (WLS) method. The effectiveness of these three methods is reflected by streaking metrics (Streaking), structural similarity (SSIM), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and improvement factor (IF) on the uniformity, structure, and information content of the corrected GF5-02 VIMI images and by the accuracy of the corrected simulated Landsat 8 TIRS images. The experimental results indicate that the trend repair method proposed in this paper removes nonlinear stripe noise effectively, making the results of IF > 20. The remaining indicators also show satisfactory results; in particular, the mean accuracy derived from the simulated image remains below a digital number (DN) of 15, which is far superior to the other two methods. Recent advancements in deep learning have spurred the development of numerous novel semantic segmentation models for land cover mapping, showcasing exceptional performance in delineating precise boundaries and producing highly accurate land cover maps. However, to date, no systematic literature review has comprehensively examined semantic segmentation models in the context of land cover mapping. This paper addresses this gap by synthesizing recent advancements in semantic segmentation models for land cover mapping from 2017 to 2023, drawing insights on trends, data sources, model structures, and performance metrics based on a review of 106 articles. Our analysis identifies top journals in the field, including MDPI Remote Sensing, IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Earth Science, and IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, and ISPRS Journal Of Photogrammetry And Remote Sensing. We find that research predominantly focuses on land cover, urban areas, precision agriculture, environment, coastal areas, and forests. Geographically, 35.29% of the study areas are located in China, followed by the USA (11.76%), France (5.88%), Spain (4%), and others. Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, and Landsat satellites emerge as the most used data sources. Benchmark datasets such as ISPRS Vaihingen and Potsdam, LandCover.ai, DeepGlobe, and GID datasets are frequently employed. Model architectures predominantly utilize encoder–decoder and hybrid convolutional neural network-based structures because of their impressive performances, with limited adoption of transformer-based architectures due to its computational complexity issue and slow convergence speed. Landsat 9 (L9) was launched on 27 September 2021. This spacecraft contained two instruments, the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) and Thermal Infrared Sensor-2 (TIRS-2), that allow for a continuation of the Landsat program and the mission to acquire multi-spectral observations of the globe on a moderate scale. Following a period of commissioning, during which time the spacecraft and instruments were initialized and set up for operations, with the initial calibration performed, the mission moved to an operational mode This operational mode involved the same cadence and methods that were performed for the Landsat 8 (L8) spacecraft and the two instruments onboard, the Operational Land Imager-1 (OLI-1) and Thermal Infrared Sensor-1 (TIRS-1), with respect to calibration, characterization, and validation. This paper discusses the geometric operational aspects of the L9 instruments during the first year of the mission and post-commissioning, and compares these same geometric activities performed for L8 during the same time frame. During this time, optical axes of the two sensors, OLI-1 and OLI-2, were adjusted to stay aligned with the spacecraft's Attitude Control System (ACS), and the TIRS-1 and TIRS-2 instruments were adjusted to stay aligned with the OLI-1 and OLI-2 instruments, respectively. In this paper, the L9 operational adjustments are compared to the same operational aspects of L8 during this same time frame. The comparisons shown in this paper will demonstrate that both instruments aboard L8 and L9 performed very similar geometric qualities while fully meeting the expected requirements. This paper describes the geometric differences between the L9 imagery that was made available to the public prior to the reprocessing campaign that was performed using the new calibration updates to the sensor and to ACS and TIRS-to-OLI alignment parameters. Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) has grown rapidly in China since its introduction in 1979, showing the trend of alien species invasion, which has seriously affected the ecosystem balance of coastal wetlands. The temporal and spatial expansion law of S. alterniflora can be obtained through remote sensing monitoring, which can provide a reference and basis for S. alterniflora management. This paper presents a method for extracting and mapping S. alterniflora based on phenological characteristics. The coastal areas of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration are selected as the research area, and the Landsat time series data from 1990 to 2022 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform are used to support the experiment in this paper. Firstly, the possible growing area of S. alterniflora was extracted using the normalized differential moisture index (NDMI), normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), and normalized differential water index (NDWI); Then, the time series curve characterizing the phenological characteristics of vegetation was constructed using the vegetation index to determine the difference phase of phenological characteristics between S. alterniflora and other vegetation. Finally, a decision tree was constructed based on the phenological feature difference phase data to extract S. alterniflora, and it is applied to the analysis of temporal and spatial changes of S. alterniflora in the study area from 1990 to 2022. The results show that the area of S. alterniflora increased from ~1426 ha in 1990 to ~44,508 ha in 2022. However, the area of S. alterniflora began to show negative growth in 2015 due to the construction of nature reserves and ecological management. The results of correlation analysis showed that the growth of C. japonicum was significantly affected by temperature stress and weakly affected by precipitation. This study verified that Landsat time series images can effectively extract vegetation phenological information, which has strong feasibility for extraction and dynamic monitoring of S. alterniflora and provides technical support for the management and monitoring of invasive plants in coastal wetlands. Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager (L9-OLI) was launched on 27 September 2021, after completing a successful radiometric pre-launch calibration and characterization phase. The radiometric math model that governs the ground system—the data processing and analysis system (DPAS)—uses various calibration parameters that had been derived based on the pre-launch tests and analysis. During the on-orbit commissioning phase, the OLI system acquired specific sets of data collects, which enabled the revalidation of the pre-launch absolute calibration scale and other associated instrument performance characteristics. The analysis results shown in this paper focus on the activities and results related to the transfer-to-orbit analysis for the SI-traceable pre-launch radiometric scale. Key topics discussed in this paper include: radiance and reflectance calibration parameters for OLI; solar diffuser collects; stimulation-lamp collects; dark response; signal-to-noise ratios; and noise characteristics; radiometric response stability and the on-orbit update to the radiance to reflectance conversion factors. It will be shown that the OLI response during the early on-orbit operation matched pre-launch results and therefore this re-validates the absolute radiometric scaling at the predicted pre-launch level within the expected level of uncertainties. The launch did not cause any significant changes to the OLI system from the perspective of the absolute radiometric calibration performance. Once the transfer to orbit of the absolute calibration was confirmed, it created a solid basis for further on-orbit refinements of the radiance calibration parameters. As such, follow-on calibration refinements are discussed in other articles within this special issue, and they address issues such as uniformity as well as cross-calibration activities. Although there is extensive research demonstrating the significant loss and fragmentation of urban spaces caused by rapid urbanization, to date, no empirical research in Shanghai has investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban open spaces using a comprehensive set of integrated geospatial techniques based on long-sequence time series. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and using the Random Forest (RF) classifier, multiple techniques, namely landscape metrics, trend analysis, open space ratio, transition matrix, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and fractal dimension analysis, were applied to analyze the Landsat satellite data. Next, Geographic Detector (GeoDetector) methods were used to investigate the driving forces of such spatial variations. The results showed that (1) the RF classification algorithm, supported by the GEE, can accurately and quickly obtain a research object dataset, and that calculating the optimal spatial grain size for open space pattern was 70 m; (2) open spaces exhibited declining and contracting trends; and open spaces in the city experienced a decline from 91.83% in 1980 to 69.63% in 2020. Meanwhile, the degree of open spaces in each district increased to different extents, whilst connectivity markedly decreased. Furthermore, the open space of city center districts showed the lowest rate of decrease, with open space patterns fragmenting due to encroaching urbanization; (3) the contribution of socioeconomic factors to the spatial–temporal changes in open space continually has increased over the past 40 years, and were also higher than natural geographic factors to some extent. Apart from offering policy insights guiding the future spatial planning and development of the city, this paper has contributions from both methodological and empirical perspectives. Large rivers without hydrological data from remote sensing observations have recently become a hot research topic. The Irrawaddy River is among the major tropical rivers worldwide; however, published hydrological data on this river have rarely been obtained in recent years. In this paper, based on the existing measured the total suspended matter flux (FTSM) and discharge data for the Irrawaddy River, an inversion model of the total suspended matter concentration (CTSM) is constructed for the Irrawaddy River, and the CTSM and FTSM from 1990 to 2020 are estimated using the L1 products of Landsat-8 OLI/TIRS and Landsat-5 TM. The results show that over the last 30 years, the FTSM of the Irrawaddy River decreased at a rate of 3.9 Mt/yr, which is significant at the 99% confidence interval. An increase in the vegetation density of the Irrawaddy Delta has increased the land conservation capacity of the region and reduced the inflow of land-based total suspended matter (TSM). The FTSM of the Irrawaddy River was estimated by fusing satellite data and data measured at hydrological stations. Due to the limited penetration of visible bands, optical remote sensing images are inevitably contaminated by clouds. Therefore, cloud detection or cloud mask products for optical image processing is a very important step. Compared with conventional optical remote sensing satellites (such as Landsat series and Sentinel-2), sustainable development science Satellite-1 (SDGSAT-1) multi-spectral imager (MII) lacks a short-wave infrared (SWIR) band that can be used to effectively distinguish cloud and snow. To solve the above problems, a cloud detection method based on spectral and gradient features (SGF) for SDGSAT-1 multispectral images is proposed in this paper. According to the differences in spectral features between cloud and other ground objects, the method combines four features, namely, brightness, normalized difference water index (NDWI), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and haze-optimized transformation (HOT) to distinguish cloud and most ground objects. Meanwhile, in order to adapt to different environments, the dynamic threshold using Otsu's method is adopted. In addition, it is worth mentioning that gradient features are used to distinguish cloud and snow in this paper. With the test of SDGSAT-1 multispectral images and comparison experiments, the results show that SGF has excellent performance. The overall accuracy of images with snow surface can reach 90.80%, and the overall accuracy of images with other surfaces is above 94%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Land surface temperature (LST) is important in a variety of applications, such as urban thermal environment monitoring and water resource management. In this paper, eleven candidate split-window (SW) algorithms were adapted to Thermal Infrared Sensor-2 (TIRS-2) data of the Landsat 9 satellite for estimating the LST. The simulated dataset produced by extensive radiative transfer modeling and five global atmospheric profile databases was used to determine the SW algorithm coefficients. Ground measurements gathered at Surface Radiation Budget Network sites were used to confirm the efficiency of the SW algorithms after their performance was initially examined using the independent simulation dataset. Five atmospheric profile databases perform similarly in training accuracy under various subranges of total water vapor. The candidate SW algorithms demonstrate superior performance compared to the radiative transfer equation algorithm, exhibiting a reduction in overall bias and RMSE by 1.30 K and 1.0 K, respectively. Cold-temperate forests (CTFs) are not only an important source of wood but also provide significant carbon storage in China. However, under the increasing pressure of human activities and climate change, CTFs are experiencing severe disturbances, such as logging, fires, and pest infestations, leading to evident degradation trends. Though these disturbances impact both regional and global carbon budgets and their assessments, the disturbance patterns in CTFs in northern China remain poorly understood. In this paper, the Genhe forest area, which is a typical CTF region located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Northeast China (with an area of about 2.001 × 104 km2), was selected as the study area. Based on Landsat historical archived data on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, we used the continuous change detection and classification (CCDC) algorithm and considered seasonal features to detect forest disturbances over nearly 30 years. First, we created six inter-annual time series seasonal vegetation index datasets to map forest coverage using the maximum between-class variance algorithm (OTSU). Second, we used the CCDC algorithm to extract disturbance information. Finally, by using the ECMWF climate reanalysis dataset, MODIS C6, the snow phenology dataset, and forestry department records, we evaluated how disturbances relate to climate and human activities. The results showed that the disturbance map generated using summer (June–August) imagery and the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) had the highest overall accuracy (88%). Forests have been disturbed to the extent of 12.65% (2137.31 km2) over the last 30 years, and the disturbed area generally showed a trend toward reduction, especially after commercial logging activities were banned in 2015. However, there was an unusual increase in the number of disturbed areas in 2002 and 2003 due to large fires. The monitoring of potential widespread forest disturbance due to extreme drought and fire events in the context of climate change should be strengthened in the future, and preventive and salvage measures should be taken in a timely manner. Our results demonstrate that CTF disturbance can be robustly mapped by using the CCDC algorithm based on Landsat time series seasonal imagery in areas with complex meteorological conditions and spatial heterogeneity, which is essential for understanding forest change processes. Many studies in recent years have been devoted to estimating the per-pixel proportions of three broad classes of materials (e.g., photosynthetic vegetation, non-photosynthetic vegetation and bare soil) using data from multispectral sensors. Oftentimes, the estimated proportions are used to monitor environmental change in both urban and non-urban environments. Many of these papers use proportion estimation methods based on the linear mixture model. Very few of these papers assess the accuracy of their estimators. This paper shows how to produce confidence intervals (CIs) and joint confidence regions (JCRs) for the proportions associated with various linear mixture models. There are two main models, both of which assume that the coefficients in the model are non-negative. The first model assumes that the coefficients sum to 1. The second does not, but uses rescaling of the estimated coefficients to produce estimated proportions. Three variants of these two models are also analysed. JCRs are shown to be particularly informative, because they are typically better at localising the information than CIs are. The methodology is illustrated using examples from Landsat Thematic Mapper data at 1169 locations across Australia, each of which has associated field observations. Surface reflectance measurement is an integral part of the vicarious calibration of satellite sensors and the validation of satellite-derived top-of-atmosphere (TOA) and surface reflectance products. A well-known practice for estimating surface reflectance is to conduct a field campaign with a spectrometer and a calibration panel, which is labor-intensive and expensive. To address this issue, the Radiometric Calibration Network, RadCalNet, has been developed, which automatically collects surface reflectance over several selected sites. Neither of these approaches can continuously track the atmosphere, which limits their ability to compensate for atmospheric transmittance change during target measurement. This paper presents the dual-spectrometer approach that uses a stationary spectrometer dedicated to continuously tracking changes in atmospheric transmittance by staring at a calibrated reference panel while the mobile spectrometer measures the target. Simultaneous measurement of the reflectance panel and target help to transfer calibration from the stationary spectrometer to the mobile spectrometer and synchronize the measurements. In this manner, atmospheric transmittance changes during target measurement can be tracked and used to reduce the variability of the target surface reflectance. This paper uses field measurement data from combined field campaigns between different calibration groups at Brookings, South Dakota, and Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 underfly efforts over Coconino National Forest, Arizona, and Guymon, Oklahoma. Preliminary results show that even in a clear sky condition, where atmospheric transmittance changes are minimal, the precision of target surface reflectance estimated using the dual-spectrometer approach is 2–6% better than the single-spectrometer approach. The dual-spectrometer approach shows the potential for a substantial improvement in the precision of the target spectral profile when the atmospheric transmittance is changing rapidly during field measurement. Results show that during non-optimal atmospheric conditions, the dual-spectrometer approach improved the precision of the surface reflectance by 50–60% compared to the single-spectrometer approach across most spectral regions. The ability to estimate surface reflectance more precisely using the dual-spectrometer approach in different atmospheric conditions improves the vicarious calibration of optical satellite sensors and the validation of both TOA and surface reflectance products. As satellite observation technology develops and the number of Earth observation (EO) satellites increases, satellite observations have become essential to developments in the understanding of the Earth and its environment. However, the current impacts to the remote sensing community of different EO satellite data and possible future trends of EO satellite data applications have not been systematically examined. In this paper, we review the impacts of and future trends in the use of EO satellite data based on an analysis of data from 15 EO satellites whose data are widely used. Articles that reference EO satellite missions included in the Web of Science core collection for 2020 were analyzed using scientometric analysis and meta-analysis. We found the following: (1) the number of publications and citations referencing EO satellites is increasing exponentially; however, the number of articles referencing AVHRR, SPOT, and TerraSAR is tending to decrease; (2) papers related to EO satellites are concentrated in a small number of journals: 43.79% of the articles that were reviewed were published in only 13 journals; and (3) remote sensing impact factor (RSIF), a new impact index, was constructed to measure the impacts of EO satellites and to predict future trends in applications of their data. Landsat, Sentinel, MODIS, Gaofen, and WorldView were found to be the most significant current EO satellite missions and MODIS data to have the widest range of applications. Beach morphology can be observed over large spatio-temporal scales, and future shoreline positions can be predicted and coastal risk indicators can be derived by measuring satellite-derived instantaneous waterlines. Long-term satellite missions, such as Landsat and Sentinel-2, provide decades of freely available, high-resolution optical measurement datasets, enabling large-scale data collection and relatively high-frequency monitoring of sandy beaches. Satellite-Derived Shoreline (SDS) extraction methods are emerging and are increasingly being applied over large spatio-temporal scales. SDS generally consists of two steps: a mathematical relationship is applied to obtain a ratio index or pixel classification by machine-learning algorithms, and the land/sea boundary is then determined by edge detection. Indexes from lake waterline detection, such as AWEI or NDWI, are often transferred towards the shore without taking into account that these indexes are inherently affected by wave breaking. This can be overcome by using pixel classification to filter the indices, but this comes at a computational cost. In this paper, we carry out a thorough evaluation of the relationship between scene-dependent variables and waterline extraction accuracy, as well as a robust and efficient thresholding method for coastal land–water classification that optimises the index to satellite radiometry. The method developed for sandy beaches combines a new purpose-built multispectral index (SCoWI) with a refinement method of Otsu's threshold to derive sub-pixel waterline positions. Secondly, we present a waterline extraction pipeline, called Shoreliner, which combines the SCoWI index and the extraction steps to produce standardised outputs. Implemented on the CNES High Performance Cluster (HPC), Shoreliner has been quantitatively validated at Duck, NC, USA, using simultaneous Sentinel-2 acquisitions and in situ beach surveys over a 3-year period. Out of six dates that have a satellite acquisition and an in situ survey, five dates have a sub-pixel RMS error of less than 10 m. This sub-pixel performance of the extraction processing demonstrates the ability of the proposed SDS extraction method to extract reliable, instantaneous and stable waterlines. In addition, preliminary work demonstrates the transferability of the method, initially developed for Sentinel-2 Level1C imagery, to Landsat imagery. When evaluated at Duck on the same day, Sentinel-2 and Landsat imagery several minutes apart provide similar results for the detected waterline, within the method's precision. Sandy coastlines are very dynamic spaces affected by a variety of natural and human factors. In Central Chile, changes in oceanographic and wave conditions, modes of inter-annual climate variability such as El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and extreme events such as earthquakes and tsunamis condition the beach morphology. At the same time, direct human actions alter the arrival of sediments to the coast and their alongshore distribution. Despite the relevance of the beaches for this coastal region and the interesting relationship their morphology has with the aforementioned factors, there is a lack of robust morphological datasets to provide a deep characterization and understanding of the dynamism of the Chilean coast. Based on the information provided by satellite-derived shorelines (SDSs) defined by using the SHOREX algorithm, this paper characterizes the morphological changes of Playa Grande in Cartagena Bay (Central Chile) during the period 1985–2019. The shoreline position data are analyzed in the context of changing beach transforming elements, allowing for a better understanding of the changes according to multiple drivers. While some of these factors, such as earthquakes or coastal storms, have a punctual character, changes in wave patterns vary at different time scales, from seasonal to multi-annual, linked to climate phases such as ENSO. Its effects are translated into shoreline erosion and accretion conditioned by the morphology and orientation of the coast while influenced by the availability of sediment in the coastal system. According to that, a conceptual model of the dynamism and redistribution of sediment in the Bay of Cartagena is proposed. The work proves the high utility that the systematic analysis of multi-decadal SDS datasets obtained from the images acquired in the optical by the Landsat and Sentinel-2 offer for beach monitoring and understanding the coastal dynamism. Landsat data correction using the Land Surface Reflectance Code (LaSRC) has been proposed as the basis for the atmospheric correction of smallsats. While atmospheric correction can enhance smallsat data, the Landsat/LaSRC pathway delays output and may constrain accuracy and utility. The alternative, the Closed-form Method for Atmospheric Correction (CMAC), developed for smallsat application, provides surface reflectance derived solely from scene statistics. In a prior paper, CMAC closely agreed with LaSRC software for correction of the four VNIR bands of Landsat-8/9 images for conditions of low to moderate atmospheric effect over quasi-invariant warehouse-industrial targets. Those results were accepted as surrogate surface reflectance to support analysis of CMAC and LaSRC reliability for surface reflectance retrieval in two contrasting environments: shortgrass prairie and barren desert. Reliability was defined and tested through a null hypothesis: the same top-of-atmosphere reflectance under the same atmospheric condition will provide the same estimate of surface reflectance. Evaluated against the prior surrogate surface reflectance, the results found decreasing error with increasing wavelength for both methods. From 58 comparisons across the four bands, the LaSRC average absolute error ranged from 0.59% (NIR) to 50.30% (blue). The attitude accuracy of high-resolution satellite images is the main factor affecting their geometric positioning accuracy. Bundle block adjustment is the main method for realizing the simultaneous estimation of attitude models for overlapping images over a large area. In the current research on the joint positioning of high-resolution multi-line array satellite images, the adjustment is usually carried out with the view or load as a unit without considering the consistency of the error of the same platform. In this paper, we develop a self-calibration strip bundle adjustment scheme that considers the boresight misalignment among multiple cameras. By introducing the installation angle between multiple loads, we fully utilized their geometric constraint relationship with the same platform to establish a unified attitude compensation model for multiple loads. The experimental results of the ZiYuan3 (ZY-3) satellite image show that, when the ground control points (GCPs) are laid only at four corner points of the image, the image plane and elevation accuracies are 1.85 m and 1.87 m after an adjustment using this method, which can achieve comparable accuracies with those obtained by a traditional program based on an adjustment with more GCPs. Understanding changes of soil organic carbon (SOC) in top layers of croplands and their driving factors is a vital prerequisite in decision-making for maintaining sustainable agriculture. However, high-precision estimation of SOC of croplands at regional scale is still an issue to be solved. Based on soil samples, synthetic image of bare soil and geographical data, this paper predicted SOC density of croplands using Random Forest model in the Black Soil Region of Jilin Province, China in 2005 and 2020, and analyzed its influencing factors. Results showed that random forest model that integrates bare soil composite images improve the accuracy and robustness of SOC density prediction. From 2005 to 2020, the total SOC storage in croplands decreased from 89.96 to 82.79 Tg C with an annual decrease of 0.48 Tg C yr−1. The mean value of SOC density of croplands decreased from 3.42 to 3.32 kg/m2, and high values are distributed in middle parts. Changes of SOC represented significant heterogeneity spatially. 62.14% of croplands with SOC density greater than 4.0 kg/m2 decreased significantly, and 38.60% of croplands with SOC density between 2.5 and 3.0 kg/m2 significantly increased. Climatic factors made great contributions to SOC density, however, their relative importance (RI) to SOC density decreased from 44.65% to 37.26% during the study period. Synthetic images of bare soil constituted 23.54% and 26.29% of RI in the SOC density prediction, respectively, and the contribution of each band was quite different. The RIs of topographic and vegetation factors were low but increased significantly from 2005 to 2020. This study can aid local land managers and governmental agencies in assessing carbon sequestration potential and carbon credits, thus contributing to the protection and sustainable use of black soils. The study of ancient irrigation is crucial in the archaeological research of arid regions. It covers a wide range of topics, with the Near East being the focus for decades. However, political instability and limited data have posed challenges to these studies. The primary objective is to establish a standardised method applicable to different arid environments using the Google Earth Engine platform, considering local relief of terrain and seasonal differences in vegetation. This study integrates multispectral data from LANDSAT 5, Sentinel-2, SAR imagery from Sentinel 1, and TanDEM-X (12 m and 30 m) DSMs. Using these datasets, calculations of selected vegetation indices such as the SMTVI and NDVSI, spectral decomposition methods such as TCT and PCA, and topography-based methods such as the MSRM contribute to a comprehensive understanding of landscape irrigation. This paper investigates the influence of modern environmental conditions on the visibility of features like levees and palaeo-channels by testing different methods and parameters. This study aims to identify the most effective approach for each case study and explore the possibility of applying a consistent method across all areas. Urban tree classification enables informed decision-making processes in urban planning and management. This paper introduces a novel data reformation method, pseudo tree crown (PTC), which enhances the feature difference in the input layer and results in the improvement of the accuracy and efficiency of urban tree classification by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The study involved a comparative analysis of the performance of various machine learning (ML) classifiers. The results revealed a significant enhancement in classification accuracy, with an improvement exceeding 10% observed when high spatial resolution imagery captured by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was utilized. Furthermore, the study found an impressive average classification accuracy of 93% achieved by a classifier built on the PyTorch framework, with ResNet50 leveraged as its convolutional neural network layer. Forests are an essential part of the ecosystem and play an irreplaceable role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem and protecting biodiversity. The monitoring of forest distribution plays an important role in the conservation and management of forests. This paper analyzes and compares the performance of imagery from GF-1 WFV, Landsat 8, and Sentinel-2 satellites with respect to forest/non-forest classification tasks using the random forest algorithm (RF). The results show that in the classification task of this paper, although the differences in classification accuracy among the three satellite datasets are not remarkable, the Sentinel-2 data have the highest accuracy, GF-1 WFV the second highest, and Landsat 8 the lowest. In addition, it was found that remotely sensed data of different processing levels show little influence on the classification accuracy with respect to the forest/non-forest classification task. However, the classification accuracy of the top of the atmosphere reflectance product was the most stable, and the vegetation index has a marginal effect on the distinction between forest and non-forest areas. Many rocks, minerals, and soil types reflect short-wave infrared (SWIR) imagery (900–2500 nm) in distinct ways, and geologists have long relied on this property to aid in the mapping of differing surface lithologies. Although surface archaeological features including artifacts, anthrosols, or structural remains also likely reflect SWIR wavelengths of light in unique ways, archaeological applications of SWIR imagery are rare, largely due to the low spatial resolution and high acquisition costs of these data. Fortunately, a new generation of compact, drone-deployable sensors now enables the collection of ultra-high-resolution (<10 cm), hyperspectral (>100 bands) SWIR imagery using a consumer-grade drone, while the analysis of these complex datasets is now facilitated by powerful imagery-processing software packages. This paper presents an experimental effort to develop a methodology that would allow archaeologists to collect SWIR imagery using a drone, locate surface artifacts in the resultant data, and identify different artifact types in the imagery based on their reflectance values across the 900–1700 nm spectrum. Our results illustrate both the potential of this novel approach to exploring the archaeological record, as we successfully locate and characterize many surface artifacts in our experimental study, while also highlighting challenges in successful data collection and analysis, largely related to current limitations in sensor and drone technology. These findings show that as underlying hardware sees continued improvements in the coming years, drone-acquired SWIR imagery can become a powerful tool for the discovery, documentation, and analysis of archaeological landscapes. The operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model has been utilized to generate gridded evapotranspiration data from Landsat images. These estimates are primarily driven by two sources of information: reference evapotranspiration and Landsat land surface temperature (LST) values. Hence, SSEBop is limited by the availability of Landsat data. Here, in this proof-of-concept paper, we utilize the Continuous Change Detection and Classification (CCDC) algorithm to generate synthetic Landsat data, which are then used as input for SSEBop to generate evapotranspiration estimates for six target areas in the continental United States, representing forests, shrublands, and irrigated agriculture. These synthetic land cover data are then used to generate the LST data required for SSEBop evapotranspiration estimates. The synthetic LST, evaporative fractions, and evapotranspiration data from CCDC closely mirror the phenological cycles in the observed Landsat data. Across the six sites, the median correlation in seasonal LST was 0.79, and the median correlation in seasonal evapotranspiration was 0.8. The median root mean squared error (RMSE) values were 2.82 °C for LST and 0.50 mm/day for actual evapotranspiration. CCDC predictions typically underestimate the average evapotranspiration by less than 1 mm/day. The average performance of the CCDC evaporative fractions, and corresponding evapotranspiration estimates, were much better than the initial LST estimates and, therefore, promising. Future work could include bias correction to improve CCDC's ability to accurately reproduce synthetic Landsat data during the summer, allowing for more accurate evapotranspiration estimates, and determining the ability of SSEBop to predict regional evapotranspiration at seasonal timescales based on projected land cover change from CCDC. Surface water is a vital component of the Earth's water cycle and characterizing its dynamics is essential for understanding and managing our water resources. Satellite-based remote sensing has been used to monitor surface water dynamics, but cloud cover can obscure surface observations, particularly during flood events, hindering water identification. The fusion of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data leverages the advantages of both sensors to provide accurate surface water maps while increasing the temporal density of unobstructed observations for monitoring surface water spatial dynamics. This paper presents a method for generating dense time series of surface water observations using optical–SAR sensor fusion and gap filling. We applied this method to data from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Landsat 8 satellite data from 2019 over six regions spanning different ecological and climatological conditions. We validated the resulting surface water maps using an independent, hand-labeled dataset and found an overall accuracy of 0.9025, with an accuracy range of 0.8656–0.9212 between the different regions. The validation showed an overall false alarm ratio (FAR) of 0.0631, a probability of detection (POD) of 0.8394, and a critical success index (CSI) of 0.8073, indicating that the method generally performs well at identifying water areas. However, it slightly underpredicts water areas with more false negatives. We found that fusing optical and SAR data for surface water mapping increased, on average, the number of observations for the regions and months validated in 2019 from 11.46 for optical and 55.35 for SAR to 64.90 using both, a 466% and 17% increase, respectively. The results show that the method can effectively fill in gaps in optical data caused by cloud cover and produce a dense time series of surface water maps. Deriving bathymetry by means of multispectral satellite imagery proves to be a replicable method, offering high-resolution coverage over large areas while keeping costs low. Maritime archaeologists often require bathymetric mapping at a high resolution and with a large spatial coverage. In this paper, we demonstrate the implementation of SDB in maritime archaeology using high-resolution (5 m/pixel) data from Vegetation and Environment monitoring on a New Micro-Satellite (VENμS) imagery. We focus on the area of the Roman harbour of Sebastos, located at Caesarea Maritima along the Israeli coast of the Eastern Mediterranean. For extracting SDB, we take an empirical approach, which is based on the integration of satellite imagery and sonar depth measurements, resulting in a blue-green band ratio algorithm that provides reliable results up to a water depth of 17 m. Comparison with in situ depth measurements yielded an RMSE of 0.688 m. The SDB mapping is complemented by satellite-based identification of above- and below-water rocks. The presented approach can readily be replicated in other regions using various types of multispectral satellite imagery, particularly when only coarse bathymetric sonar data are available, thus substantially contributing to our ability to perform maritime archaeological research. This paper presents the initial vicarious radiometric calibration results for Landsat 9 OLI using a combination of ground-based techniques and test sites located in Nevada, California, and South Dakota, USA. The field data collection methods include the traditional reflectance-based approach and the automated Radiometric Calibration Test Site (RadCaTS). The results for top-of-atmosphere spectral radiance show an average ratio (OLI/ground measurements) of 1.03, 1.01, 1.00, 1.02, 1.02, 1.01, 0.98, and 1.01 for Landsat 9 OLI bands 1–8, which is within the design specification of ±5% for spectral radiance. The launch of Landsat 9 (L9) on 27 September 2021 marks the ongoing commitment of the Landsat mission to delivering users with calibrated Earth observations for fifty years. The two imaging sensors on L9 are the Thermal Infrared Sensor-2 (TIRS-2) and the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2). Shortly after launch, the image data from OLI-2 and TIRS-2 were evaluated for both radiometric and geometric quality. This paper provides a synopsis of the evaluation of the spatial response of the TIRS-2 instrument. The assessment focuses on determining the instrument's ability to detect a perfect knife edge. The spatial response was evaluated both pre- and post-launch. Pre-launch testing was performed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) under flight-like thermal vacuum (TVAC) conditions. On orbit, coastline targets were identified to evaluate the spatial response and compared against Landsat 8 (L8). The pre-launch results indicate that the spatial response of the TIRS-2 sensor is consistent with its predecessor on board L8, with no noticeable decline in image quality to compromise any TIRS science objectives. The Landsat-9 satellite, launched in September 2021, carries the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) as one of its payloads. This instrument is a clone of the Landsat-8 OLI and its mission is to continue the operational land imaging of the Landsat program. The OLI-2 instrument is not significantly different from OLI though the instrument-level pre-launch spectral characterization process was much improved. The focal plane modules used on OLI-2 were manufactured as spares for OLI and much of the spectral characterization of the components was performed for OLI. However, while the spectral response of the fully assembled OLI was characterized by a double monochromator system, the OLI-2 spectral characterization made use of the Goddard Laser for Absolute Measurement of Radiance (GLAMR). GLAMR is a system of tunable lasers that cover 350–2500 nm which are fiber-coupled to a 30 in integrating sphere permanently monitored by NIST-traceable radiometers. GLAMR allowed the spectral characterization of every detector of the OLI-2 focal plane in nominal imaging conditions. The spectral performance of the OLI-2 was, in general, much better than requirements. The final relative spectral responses (RSRs) represent the best characterization any Landsat instrument spectral response. Seagrass and seaweed meadows hold a very important role in coastal and marine ecosystems. However, anthropogenic impacts pose risks to these delicate habitats. This paper analyses the multitemporal impact of the construction of the largest industrial port in the Canary Islands, near the Special Area of Conservation Natura 2000, on Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadows (sebadales) of the South of Tenerife, in the locality of Granadilla (Canary Islands, Spain). Very-high-resolution WorldView-2 multispectral satellite data were used for the analysis. Specifically, three images were selected before, during, and after the construction of the port (2011, 2014, and 2022, correspondingly). Initially, advanced pre-processing of the images was performed, and then seabed maps were obtained using the machine learning K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) supervised classification model, discriminating 12 different bottom types in Case-2 complex waters. The maps achieved high-quality metrics with Precision values of 85%, 81%, and 80%, recall of 76%, 77%, and 77%, and F1 scores of 80%, 79%, and 77% for 2011, 2014, and 2022, respectively. The results mainly show that the construction directly affected the seagrass and seaweed habitats. In particular, the impact of the port on the meadows of Cymodocea nodosa, Caulerpa prolifera, and maërl was assessed. The total maërl population was reduced by 1.9 km2 throughout the study area. However, the Cymodocea nodosa population was maintained at the cost of colonizing maërl areas. Furthermore, the port sedimented a total of 0.98 km2 of seabed, especially Cymodocea nodosa and maërl. In addition, it was observed that Caulerpa prolifera was established as a meadow at the entrance of the port, replacing part of the Cymodocea nodosa and maërl areas. Leveraging mid-resolution satellite images such as Landsat 8 for accurate farmland segmentation and land change monitoring is crucial for agricultural management, yet is hindered by the scarcity of labelled data for the training of supervised deep learning pipelines. The particular focus of this study is on addressing the scarcity of labelled images. This paper introduces several contributions, including a systematic satellite image data augmentation approach that aims to maintain data population consistency during model training, thus mitigating performance degradation. To alleviate the labour-intensive task of pixel-wise image labelling, we present a novel application of a modified conditional generative adversarial network (CGAN) to generate artificial satellite images and corresponding farm labels. Additionally, we scrutinize the role of spectral bands in satellite image segmentation and compare two prominent semantic segmentation models, U-Net and DeepLabV3+, with diverse backbone structures. Our empirical findings demonstrate that augmenting the dataset with up to 22.85% artificial samples significantly enhances the model performance. Notably, the U-Net model, employing standard convolution, outperforms the DeepLabV3+ models with atrous convolution, achieving a segmentation accuracy of 86.92% on the test data. Meandering channel migration is a widespread phenomenon in rivers all around the world. Channel activity, which reflects the rate of change of a meandering channel, is calculated by averaging lateral channel migration. Channel migration can create new channels and abandon old ones, with effects on the natural environment. Floods can even lead to excessive rates of channel migration, which can threaten cities or farmland. Remote sensing can detect the spatial and temporal dynamic characteristics of the river channel, taking into account both spatial and temporal resolution, and can help in planning for the safety of the river channel in advance. Previous studies on river channels have suffered from a low accuracy of data, low level of automation, and subjectivity. To overcome these limitations, we propose a channel activity remote sensing retrieval model (CARSM) in this paper. CARSM extracts water using the modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) combined with Otsu's method on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, then extracts the channel centerlines via water mask maps using RivWidthCloud, and finally calculates channel activity based on the geometric relationship of the channel centerlines. With more objective extraction results, CARSM can guarantee more than 95% accuracy of channel activity and its high degree of automation can save a lot of labor costs. We use Landsat images to monitor the channel of the Lower Yellow River and calculate the overall and segmental channel activity separately. Our results show that the overall channel activity of the Lower Yellow River has gradually decreased between 1990 and 2020, with decreases of 33.04% and 41.06%, respectively. Analysis of channel activity reveals that the water sediment pattern of the Lower Yellow River changed from siltation to scouring after the completion of Xiaolangdi Reservoir, and the Lower Yellow River is gradually becoming stable. With the wide application of remote sensing technology, target detection based on deep learning has become a research hotspot in the field of remote sensing. In this paper, aimed at the problems of the existing deep-learning-based desert land intelligent extraction methods, such as the spectral similarity of features and unclear texture features, we propose a multispectral remote sensing image desert land intelligent extraction method that takes into account band information. Firstly, we built a desert land intelligent interpretation dataset based on band weighting to enhance the desert land foreground features of the images. On this basis, we introduced the deformable convolution adaptive feature extraction capability to U-Net and developed the Y-Net model to extract desert land from Landsat remote sensing images covering the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Finally, in order to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of the desert land in the study area, we used a structural equation model (SEM) to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of natural conditions and human activities, i.e., population density (PD), livestock volume (LS), evaporation (Evp), temperature (T), days of sandy wind conditions (LD), humidity (RH), precipitation (P), anthropogenic disturbance index (Adi), and cultivated land (CL). The results show that the F1-score of the Y-Net model proposed in this paper is 95.6%, which is 11.5% more than that of U-Net. Based on the Landsat satellite images, the area of desert land in the study area for six periods from 1990 to 2020 was extracted. The results show that the area of desert land in the study area first increased and then decreased. The main influencing factors have been precipitation, humidity, and anthropogenic disturbance, for which the path coefficients are 0.646, 0.615, and 0.367, respectively. In order to evaluate forest quality and carbon stocks and improve our understanding of ecosystems and carbon cycling processes, the accurate measurement of aboveground biomass (AGB) and other forest characteristics is crucial. This paper considers the response differences between the bands obtained from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2A sensors, respectively, and combines the exhaustive combination of spectral indices with normalization and ratio techniques to establish suitable weights for the bands in the vegetation index using relative sensitivity and noise equivalent (NE) to improve the saturation effect between the vegetation index and forest parameters (canopy closure (CC), forest stand density (S), basal area (BA), and AGB) and extend the linear relationship between them. This paper also considers the effects of window size, direction, and principal component analysis on texture features, adds weight to textures and combines textures using linear correlation and NE, establishes texture indices to improve the limitations of information contained in individual texture features, analyzes the potential of texture features to evaluate each forest parameter under different conditions, and better captures the variation of forest parameters. In this paper, we only analyze the planted coniferous forest in Saihanba to avoid the differences in electromagnetic wave effects that are difficult to judge and analyze because of the differences in leaf size and leaf orientation between coniferous and broad-leaf forests. In contrast, the vegetation indices and texture indices obtained from Sentinel-2A could better estimate each vegetation parameter, and the linear estimation of each vegetation parameter using the new texture index reached an R 2 above 0.65. The results of this study indicate that Sentinel-2A and Landsat 8 are promising remote sensing datasets for estimating vegetation parameters at the regional scale, and Sentinel-2A data can be employed as the primary source of earth observation data for assessing forest resources in the Saihanba area. Starting with launch of Landsat 7 (L7) on 15 April 1999, the USGS Landsat Image Assessment System (IAS) has been performing calibration and characterization operations for over 20 years on the Landsat spacecrafts and their associated payloads. With the launch of Landsat 9 (L9) on 27 September 2021, that spacecraft and its payloads, the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) and Thermal Infrared Sensor-2 (TIRS-2), were added to the existing suite of missions supported by the IAS. This paper discusses the geometric characterizations, calibrations, and performance analyses conducted during the commissioning period of the L9 spacecraft and its instruments. During this time frame the following calibration refinements were performed; (1) alignment between the OLI-2 and TIRS-2 instruments and the spacecraft attitude control system, (2) within-instrument band alignment, (3) instrument-to-instrument alignment. These refinements, carried out during commissioning and discussed in this paper, were performed to provide an on-orbit update to the pre-launch calibration parameters that were determined through Ground System Element (GSE) testing and Thermal Vacuum Testing (TVAC) for the two instruments and the L9 spacecraft. The commissioning period calibration update captures the effects of launch shift and zero-G release, and typically represents the largest changes that are made to the on-orbit geometric calibration parameters during the mission. The geometric calibration parameter updates performed during commissioning were done prior to releasing any L9 products to the user community. This commissioning period also represents the time frame during which focus is more strictly placed on the spacecraft and instrument performance, ensuring that system and instrument requirements are met, as contrasted with the post commissioning time frame when a greater focus is placed on the products generated, their behavior and their impact on the user community. Along with the calibration updates discussed in this paper key geometric performance requirements with respect to geodetic accuracy, geometric accuracy, and swath width are presented, demonstrating that the geometric performance of the L9 spacecraft and its' instruments with respect to these key performance requirements are being met. Within the paper it will be shown that the absolute geodetic accuracy is met for OLI-2 and TIRS-2 with a margin of approximately 79% and 65% respectively while the geometric accuracy is met for OLI-2 and TIRS-2 with a margin of approximately 68% and 43% respectively. The Landsat and Sentinel series satellites contain their own quality tagging data products, marking the source image pixel by pixel with several specific semantic categories. These data products generally contain categories such as cloud, cloud shadow, land, water body, and snow. Due to the lack of mid-wave and thermal infrared bands, the accuracy of traditional cloud detection algorithm is unstable when facing Chinese Gaofen-1/6 (GF-1/6) data. Moreover, it is challenging to distinguish clouds from snow. In order to produce GF-1/6 satellite pixel-by-pixel quality tagging data products, this paper builds a training sample set of more than 100,000 image pairs, primarily using Sentinel-2 satellite data. Then, we adopt the Swin Transformer model with a self-attention mechanism for GF-1/6 satellite image quality tagging. Experiments show that the model's overall accuracy reaches the level of Fmask v4.6 with more than 10,000 training samples, and the model can distinguish between cloud and snow correctly. The Landsat 8 and 9 Underfly Event occurred in November 2021, during which Landsat 9 flew beneath Landsat 8 in the final stages before settling in its final orbiting path. An analysis was performed on the images taken during this event, which resulted in a cross-calibration with uncertainties estimated to be less than 0.5%. This level of precision was due, in part, to the near-identical sensors aboard each instrument, as well as the underfly event itself, which allowed the sensors to take nearly the exact same image at nearly the exact same time. This initial calibration was applied before the end of the on-orbit initial verification (OIV) period; this meant the analysis was performed in less than a month. While it was an effective and efficient first look at the data, a longer-term analysis was deemed prudent to obtain the most accurate cross-calibration with the smallest uncertainties. The three forms of uncertainty established in the initial analysis, dubbed "Phase 1", were geometric, spectral, and angular. This paper covers Phase 2 of the underfly analysis; several modifications were made to the Phase 1 process to improve the cross-calibration results, including a spectral correction in the form of a spectral band adjustment factor (SBAF) and a more robust filtering system that used the statistics of the reflectance data to better include important data compared to the more aggressive filters used in Phase 1. A proper uncertainty analysis was performed to more accurately quantify the uncertainty associated with the underfly cross-calibration. The results of Phase 2 showed that the Phase 1 analysis was within its 0.5% uncertainty estimation, and the cross-calibration gain values in this paper were used by USGS EROS to update the Landsat 9 calibration at the end of 2022. Performing research on the variation in lake water on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) can give the area's ecological environmental preservation a scientific foundation. In this paper, we first created a high-precision dataset of lake water level variation every 10 days, from July 2002 to December 2022, using multi-source altimetry satellite SGDR data (Envisat RA-2, SARAL, Jason-1/2, and Sentinel-3A/3B SRAL), which integrated the methods of atmospheric path delay correction, waveform re-tracking, outlier detection, position reduction using a height difference model, and inter-satellite deviation adjustment. Then, using Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper, Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper, and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager data, an averaged area series of Lake Qinghai (LQ) from September to November, each year from 2002 to 2019, was produced. The functional connection between the water level and the area was determined by fitting the water level–area series data, and the lake area time series, of LQ. Using the high-precision lake water level series, the fitted lake surface area time series, and the water storage variation equation, the water storage variation time series of LQ was thus calculated every 10 days, from July 2002 to December 2022. When the hydrological gauge data from the Xiashe station and data from the worldwide inland lake water level database are used as references, the standard deviations of the LQ water level time series are 0.0676 m and 0.1201 m, respectively. The results show that the water storage of LQ increases by 11.022 × 109 m3 from July 2002 to December 2022, with a growth rate of 5.3766 × 108 m3/a. The growth rate from January 2005 to January 2015 is 4.4850 × 108 m3/a, and from January 2015 to December 2022, the growth rate is 8.9206 × 108 m3/a. Comprehending the spatiotemporal dynamics and driving factors of small and micro wetlands (SMWs) holds paramount significance in their conservation and sustainable development. This paper investigated the spatiotemporal evolution and driving mechanisms of SMWs in the Yellow River Basin, utilizing buffer zones, overlay analysis, and the Geodetector model based on Landsat satellite images and an open-surface water body dataset from 1990 to 2020. The results revealed that (1) from 1990 to 2020, SMWs in the Yellow River Basin exhibited an overall pattern of fluctuation reduction. The total area decreased by approximately 1.12 × 105 hm2, with the predominant decline occurring in the 0–1 hm2 and 1–3 hm2 size categories. In terms of spatial distribution, SMWs in Qinghai and Gansu decreased significantly, while the SMWs in Inner Mongolia, Henan, and Shandong gradually increased. (2) From 1990 to 2020, SMWs were mostly converted into grassland and cropland, with some transformed into impervious water surface and barren, and only a small percentage converted into other land types in the Yellow River basin. (3) The alterations in SMWs were influenced by factors, with their interplay exhibiting nonlinear or bilinear enhancement. Among these factors, annual precipitation, elevation, and potential evapotranspiration were the primary natural factors influencing the changes in the distribution of SMWs. The Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) is a critical spatial distribution parameter in the quantitative research of remote sensing and has a wide range of applications in radiometric correction, elemental inversion, and surface feature estimation. As a new means of BRDF modeling, UAV push-broom hyperspectral imaging is limited by the push-broom imaging method, and the multi-angle information is often difficult to obtain. In addition, the random variation of solar illumination during UAV low-altitude flight makes the irradiance between different push-broom hyperspectral rows and different airstrips inconsistent, which significantly affects the radiometric consistency of BRDF modeling and results in the difficulty of accurately portraying the three-dimensional spatial reflectance distribution in the UAV model. These problems largely impede the application of outdoor BRDF. Based on this, this paper proposes a fast multi-angle information acquisition scheme with a high-accuracy BRDF modeling method considering illumination variations, which mainly involves a lightweight system for BRDF acquisition and three improved BRDF models considering illumination corrections. We adopt multi-rectangular nested flight paths for multi-gray level targets, use multi-mode equipment to acquire spatial illumination changes and multi-angle reflectivity information in real-time, and introduce the illumination correction factor K through data coupling to improve the kernel, Hapke, and RPV models, and, overall, the accuracy of the improved model is increased by 20.83%, 11.11%, and 31.48%, respectively. The results show that our proposed method can acquire multi-angle information quickly and accurately using push-broom hyperspectral imaging, and the improved model eliminates the negative effect of illumination on BRDF modeling. This paper presents a comprehensive intercomparison study investigating the radiometric performance of and concurrence among the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (L8 OLI), and Landsat 9 OLI (L9 OLI) instruments. This study leverages data sourced from the Radiometric Calibration Network (RadCalNet) and focuses on spectral bands relevant for vegetation analysis and land cover classification, encompassing a thorough assessment of data quality, uncertainties, and underlying influencing factors. This study's outcomes underscore the efficacy of RadCalNet in evaluating the precision and reliability of remote sensing data, offering valuable insights into the strengths and limitations of ASTER, L8 OLI, and L9 OLI. These insights serve as a foundation for informed decision making in environmental monitoring and resource management, highlighting the pivotal role of RadCalNet in gauging the radiometric performance of remote sensing sensors. Results from RadCalNet sites, namely Railroad Valley Playa and Gobabeb, show their possible suitability for sensors with spatial resolutions down to 15 m. The results indicate that the measurements from both ASTER and OLI closely align with the data from RadCalNet, and the observed agreement falls comfortably within the total range of potential errors associated with the sensors and the test site information. Forest stock volume is the main factor to evaluate forest carbon sink level. At present, the combination of multi-source remote sensing and non-parametric models has been widely used in FSV estimation. However, the biodiversity of natural forests is complex, and the response of the spatial information of remote sensing images to FSV is significantly reduced, which seriously affects the accuracy of FSV estimation. To address this challenge, this paper takes China's Baishanzu Forest Park with representative characteristics of natural forests as the research object, integrates the forest survey data, SRTM data, and Landsat 8 images of Baishanzu Forest Park, constructs a time series dataset based on survey time, and establishes an FSV estimation model based on the CNN-LSTM-Attention algorithm. The model uses the convolutional neural network to extract the spatial features of remote sensing images, uses the LSTM to capture the time-varying characteristics of FSV, captures the feature variables with a high response to FSV through the attention mechanism, and finally completes the prediction of FSV. The experimental results show that some features (e.g., texture, elevation, etc.) of the dataset based on multi-source data feature variables are more effective in FSV estimation than spectral features. Compared with the existing models such as MLR and RF, the proposed model achieved higher accuracy in the study area (R2 = 0.8463, rMSE = 26.73 m3/ha, MAE = 16.47 m3/ha). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main challenge in protecting ecosystems and improving the supply of ecosystem services is to quantify the ecological services value (ESV). However, the detailed spatiotemporal changes, sensitivity, spatial autocorrelation, and driving mechanisms of ESV are not clear in rapidly developing regions, particularly subsidence, floods, landslides, and the rapid urban development of Anhui province, China. In this paper, the ecological service value of Anhui Province in the past 30 years was calculated using the improved equivalent factor assessment method from satellite remote sensing such as Landsat. The spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of ESV were analyzed and the driving mechanism of ESV changes was studied using Geodetector. Finally, The GeoSOS-FLUS model was selected to predict the ecosystem service value until 2030 with three scenarios: business as usual (BAU), ecological protection (EP), and cultivated land protection (CLP). The main results were obtained: (1) the ESV in Anhui Province continued to decrease by 2.045 billion yuan (−6.03%) from 1990 to 2020. The top two contributors were the forest land, followed by water area. (2) The global Moran's I of ESV at the landform subdivision, county, town, and grid scales in Anhui Province were −0.157, 0.321, 0.357 and 0.759, respectively. (3) The order of influence degree of driving factors was: precipitation (F4), distance to intercity road (F9), net primary productivity, NPP (F6), distance to urban road (F8), population (F13), temperature (F5), aspect (F3), distance to settlement (F11), slope (F2), elevation (F1), GDP (F14), distance to water (F12), distance to railway (F10), and soil erosion (F7). (4) In 2030, the simulated ESV under the three scenarios will decrease to varying degrees. The classification of ship images has become a significant area of research within the remote sensing community due to its potential applications in maritime security, traffic monitoring, and environmental protection. Traditional monitoring methods like the Automated Identification System (AIS) and the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) have their limitations, such as challenges with sea clutter and the problem of ships turning off their transponders. Additionally, classifying ship images in remote sensing is a complex task due to the spatial arrangement of geospatial objects, complex backgrounds, and the resolution limitations of sensor platforms. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel approach that leverages a unique dataset termed Heterogeneous Ship data and a new technique called the Spatial–Channel Attention with Bilinear Pooling Network (SCABPNet). First, we introduce the Heterogeneous Ship data, which combines Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical satellite imagery, to leverage the complementary features of the SAR and optical modalities, thereby providing a richer and more-diverse set of features for ship classification. Second, we designed a custom layer, called the Spatial–Channel Attention with Bilinear Pooling (SCABP) layer. This layer sequentially applies the spatial attention, channel attention, and bilinear pooling techniques to enhance the feature representation by focusing on extracting informative and discriminative features from input feature maps, then classify them. Finally, we integrated the SCABP layer into a deep neural network to create a novel model named the SCABPNet model, which is used to classify images in the proposed Heterogeneous Ship data. Our experiments showed that the SCABPNet model demonstrated superior performance, surpassing the results of several state-of-the-art deep learning models. SCABPNet achieved an accuracy of 97.67% on the proposed Heterogeneous Ship dataset during testing. This performance underscores SCABPNet's capability to focus on ship-specific features while suppressing background noise and feature redundancy. Combining images from multiple Earth Observing (EO) satellites increases the temporal resolution of the data, overcoming the limitations imposed by low revisit time and cloud coverage. However, this requires an intercalibration process to ensure that there is no radiometric difference in top-of-atmosphere (TOA) observations or to quantify any offset in the respective instruments. In addition, combining vicarious calibration processes to the intercalibration of instruments can provide a useful mechanism to validate and compare data from multiple sensors. The Radiometric Calibration Network (RadCalNet) provides automated surface and top-of-atmosphere reflectance data from multiple participating ground sites that can be used for instrument vicarious calibration. We present a comparative analysis of the Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 Operational Land Imagers (OLI) sensors and validate the data by comparing them to measurements from RadCalNet sites as a quantitative intercalibration approach. RadCalNet serves as a common reference for instrument radiometric calibration, providing SI-traceable TOA reflectance with its associated absolute uncertainties. This paper discusses the method of combining data from multiple sites and calculating the weighted average by comparing the TOA reflectance of the instruments and their associated uncertainties. The presented process provides a SI-traceable intercalibration methodology and quantifies the offset and uncertainty in the Landsat 8 and 9 OLI instruments, demonstrating that the two instruments are in good agreement with each other and the data can be reliably cross-correlated and used by the scientific community. This paper presents the MSSFF (multistage spectral–spatial feature fusion) framework, which introduces a novel approach for semantic segmentation from hyperspectral imagery (HSI). The framework aims to simplify the modeling of spectral relationships in HSI sequences and unify the architecture for semantic segmentation of HSIs. It incorporates a spectral–spatial feature fusion module and a multi-attention mechanism to efficiently extract hyperspectral features. The MSSFF framework reevaluates the potential impact of spectral and spatial features on segmentation models and leverages the spectral–spatial fusion module (SSFM) in the encoder component to effectively extract and enhance these features. Additionally, an efficient Transformer (ET) is introduced in the skip connection part of deep features to capture long-term dependent features and extract global spectral–spatial information from the entire feature map. This highlights the significant potential of Transformers in modeling spectral–spatial feature maps within the context of hyperspectral remote sensing. Moreover, a spatial attention mechanism is adopted in the shallow skip connection part to extract local features. The framework demonstrates promising capabilities in hyperspectral remote sensing applications. The monitoring of rapidly changing land surface processes requires remote sensing images with high spatiotemporal resolution. As remote sensing satellites have different satellite orbits, satellite orbital velocities, and sensors, it is challenging to acquire remote sensing images with high resolution and dense time series within a reasonable temporal interval. Remote sensing spatiotemporal fusion is one of the effective ways to acquire high-resolution images with long time series. Most of the existing STF methods use artificially specified fusion strategies, resulting in blurry images and poor generalization ability. Additionally, some methods lack continuous time change information, leading to poor performance in capturing sharp changes in land covers. In this paper, we propose an adaptive multiscale network for spatiotemporal fusion (AMS-STF) based on a generative adversarial network (GAN). AMS-STF reconstructs high-resolution images by leveraging the temporal and spatial features of the input data through multiple adaptive modules and multiscale features. In AMS-STF, for the first time, deformable convolution is used for the STF task to solve the shape adaptation problem, allowing for adaptive adjustment of the convolution kernel based on the different shapes and types of land use. Additionally, an adaptive attention module is introduced in the networks to enhance the ability to perceive temporal changes. We conducted experiments comparing AMS-STF to the most widely used and innovative models currently available on three Landsat-MODIS datasets, as well as ablation experiments to evaluate some innovative modules. The results demonstrate that the adaptive modules significantly improve the fusion effect of land covers and enhance the clarity of their boundaries, which proves the effectiveness of AMS-STF. Semantic segmentation is a fundamental task in remote sensing image analysis that aims to classify each pixel in an image into different land use and land cover (LULC) segmentation tasks. In this paper, we propose MeViT (Medium-Resolution Vision Transformer) on Landsat satellite imagery for the main economic crops in Thailand as follows: (i) para rubber, (ii) corn, and (iii) pineapple. Therefore, our proposed MeViT enhances vision transformers (ViTs), one of the modern deep learning on computer vision tasks, to learn semantically rich and spatially precise multi-scale representations by integrating medium-resolution multi-branch architectures with ViTs. We revised mixed-scale convolutional feedforward networks (MixCFN) by incorporating multiple depth-wise convolution paths to extract multi-scale local information to balance the model's performance and efficiency. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments on the publicly available dataset of Thailand scenes and compare the results with several state-of-the-art deep learning methods. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed MeViT outperforms existing methods and performs better in the semantic segmentation of Thailand scenes. The evaluation metrics used are precision, recall, F1 score, and mean intersection over union (IoU). Among the models compared, MeViT, our proposed model, achieves the best performance in all evaluation metrics. MeViT achieves a precision of 92.22%, a recall of 94.69%, an F1 score of 93.44%, and a mean IoU of 83.63%. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach in accurately segmenting Thai Landsat-8 data. Calving front location plays a crucial role in studying ice–ocean interaction, mapping glacier area change, and constraining ice dynamic models. However, relying solely on visual interpretation to extract annual changes in the calving front of ice shelves is a time-consuming process. In this study, a comparative analysis was conducted on the segmentation obtained from fully convolutional networks (FCN), U-Net, and U2-Net models, revealing that U2-Net exhibited the most effective classification. Notably, U2-Net outperformed the other two models by more than 30 percent in terms of the F1 parameter. Therefore, this paper introduces an automated approach that utilizes the U2-Net model to extract the calving front of ice shelves based on a Landsat image, achieving an extraction accuracy of 58 m. To assess the model's performance on additional ice shelves in the polar region, the calving front of the Totten and Filchner ice shelves were also extracted for the past decade. The findings demonstrated that the ice velocity of the Filchner ice shelf exceeded that of the Totten ice shelf. Between February 2014 and March 2015, the majority of the calving fronts along the Filchner Ice Shelf showed an advancing trend, with the fastest-moving front measuring 3532 ± 58 m/yr. Vegetation is an important type of land cover. Long-term, large-scale, and high-precision vegetation monitoring is of great significance for ecological environment investigation and regional sustainable development in protected areas. This paper develops a long-term remote sensing monitoring method for vegetation by calculating the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform and Landsat satellite remote sensing images. First, based on Landsat long-term satellite images and GEE, the spatiotemporal distribution map of the NDVI is accurately drawn. Subsequently, the NDVI is accurately classified, and the time trend analysis of the NDVI is conducted based on the NDVI mean trend graphs, transition matrices, etc. Then, combined with Moran's I, high/low clusters, and other methods, the spatial pattern characteristics of the NDVI are analyzed. Finally, climate factors, terrain factors, and anthropologic factors are considered comprehensively. An analysis of the factors affecting the evolution of the NDVI is performed. Taking Zhoushan Island, China, as an example, an experiment is conducted, and the results reveal that (1) the average NDVI exhibits a decreasing trend from 1985 to 2022, decreasing from 0.53 in 1985 to 0.46 in 2022. (2) Regarding vegetation index transitions, the high NDVI areas (0.6–1) exhibit the most substantial shift toward moderately high NDVI values (0.4–0.6), covering an area of 83.10 km2. (3) There is an obvious spatial agglomeration phenomenon in the NDVI on Zhoushan Island. The high-high NDVI clusters and the significant hot spots are predominantly concentrated in the island's interior regions, while the low-low NDVI clusters and the significant cold spots are mainly situated along the coastal areas. (4) The DEM, slope, and temperature have a greater influence among the single factors on the spatial pattern distribution of the NDVI in 2015. There are significant differences in the spatial pattern distribution of the NDVI between the temperature and DEM, temperature and slope, DEM and precipitation, slope and precipitation, aspect and population, and aspect and gross domestic product (GDP). The DEM and slope, DEM and temperature, and DEM and population are three sets of factors with a strong influence on spatial pattern interaction. This study provides data support for the scientific management of vegetation resources on Zhoushan Island and is of great significance to the sustainable development of the island region. Demand for food and water are increasing while the extent of arable land and accessible fresh water are decreasing. This poses global challenges as economies continue to develop and the population grows. With agriculture as the leading consumer of water, better understanding how water is used to produce food may help support the increase of Crop Water Productivity (CWP; kg/m3), the ratio of crop output per unit of water input (or crop per drop). Previous large-scale CWP studies have been useful for broad water use modeling at coarser resolutions. However, obtaining more precise CWP, especially for specific crop types in a particular area and growing season as outlined here are important for informing farm-scale water management decision making. Therefore, this study focused on California's Central Valley utilizing high-spatial resolution satellite imagery of 30 m (0.09 hectares per pixel) to generate more precise CWP for commonly grown and water-intensive irrigated crops. First, two products were modeled and mapped. 1. Landsat based Actual Evapotranspiration (ETa; mm/d) to determine Crop Water Use (CWU; m3/m2), and 2. Crop Productivity (CP; kg/m2) to estimate crop yield per growing season. Then, CWP was calculated by dividing CP by CWU and mapped. The amount of water that can be saved by increasing CWP of each crop was further calculated. For example, in the 434 million m2 study area, a 10% increase in CWP across the 9 crops analyzed had a potential water savings of 31.5 million m3 of water. An increase in CWP is widely considered the best approach for saving maximum quantities of water. This paper proposed, developed, and implemented a workflow of combined methods utilizing cloud computing based remote sensing data.
