This research is part of a wider framework of index literature studies that have been conducted in the past few years. Some of these have had a focus on specific remote sensing (RS) technologies, while others have tackled specific threats to cultural heritage and landscapes. By considering both damages to heritage sites and technologies used for documentation and the monitoring of such occurrences, this paper unveils the current trends on a global scale in the study of the threats to heritage caused by both human-induced and natural hazards. Papers published by Europe-based researchers over the last 20 years using RS and Earth Observation (EO) techniques were surveyed alongside recommendations and programmatic documents issued by institutions in charge of heritage protection and management of several countries in Europe. Around 300 documents, including scientific articles (published from 2000 until 2022) and Grey literature (from 2008 and 2022), were analysed. The data collection and analysis were undertaken by a working group that was intentionally composed to bring together diverse perspectives and expertise, i.e., requirements of heritage professionals using RS and EO technologies, knowledge on technologies and their use in the field, and expertise in methodology implementation to support heritage management. The results highlight the type of hazards considered the most and the geographical distribution of the archaeological sites and monuments targeted by these studies; the countries the researchers are affiliated with; the types of RS and specifically satellite-based technologies used (and hence the type of data used); the tendencies of satellite data usage—visual interpretation, image processing, employment of machine learning, and AI; the technologies most applied by public institutions and practitioners; and many others. Recommendations and future trajectories are then outlined to efficiently reframe discrepancies between types of damage that have received the greatest attention in the literature and the most impactful ones in terms of the number of sites damaged. The ionospheric anomalies before an earthquake may be related to earthquake preparation. The study of the ionospheric anomalies before an earthquake provides potential value for earthquake prediction. This paper proposes a method for detecting ionospheric total electron content (TEC) anomalies before an earthquake, taking the MS 7.8 earthquake in Türkiye on 6 February 2023 as an example. First, the data of four ground-based GNSS stations close to the epicenter were processed by using the sliding interquartile range method and the long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The anomaly dates detected by the two methods were identified as potential pre-earthquake TEC anomaly dates after eliminating solar and geomagnetic interference. Then, by using the sliding interquartile range method to process and analyze the CODE GIM (Center for Orbit Determination in Europe, Global Ionospheric Map) data from a global perspective, we further verified the existence of TEC anomalies before the earthquake on the above TEC anomaly days. Finally, the influence of the equatorial ionospheric anomaly (EIA) on the TEC anomaly disturbance was excluded. The results show that the ionospheric TEC anomalies on January 20, January 27, February 4, and February 5 before the Türkiye earthquake may be correlated with the earthquake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using airborne drones to monitor water quality in inland, transitional or coastal surface waters is an emerging research field. Airborne drones can fly under clouds at preferred times, capturing data at cm resolution, filling a significant gap between existing in situ, airborne and satellite remote sensing capabilities. Suitable drones and lightweight cameras are readily available on the market, whereas deriving water quality products from the captured image is not straightforward; vignetting effects, georeferencing, the dynamic nature and high light absorption efficiency of water, sun glint and sky glint effects require careful data processing. This paper presents the data processing workflow behind MapEO water, an end-to-end cloud-based solution that deals with the complexities of observing water surfaces and retrieves water-leaving reflectance and water quality products like turbidity and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration. MapEO water supports common camera types and performs a geometric and radiometric correction and subsequent conversion to reflectance and water quality products. This study shows validation results of water-leaving reflectance, turbidity and Chl-a maps derived using DJI Phantom 4 pro and MicaSense cameras for several lakes across Europe. Coefficients of determination values of 0.71 and 0.93 are obtained for turbidity and Chl-a, respectively. We conclude that airborne drone data has major potential to be embedded in operational monitoring programmes and can form useful links between satellite and in situ observations. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the surface concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) inferred from the Sentinel-5 Precursor Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (S5P/TROPOMI) NO2 tropospheric column densities over Central Europe for two time periods, summer 2019 and winter 2019–2020. Simulations of the NO2 tropospheric vertical column densities and surface concentrations from the Long-Term Ozone Simulation–European Operational Smog (LOTOS-EUROS) chemical transport model are also applied in the methodology. More than two hundred in situ air quality monitoring stations, reporting to the European Environment Agency (EEA) air quality database, are used to carry out comparisons with the model simulations and the spaceborne inferred surface concentrations. Stations are separated into seven types (urban traffic, suburban traffic, urban background, suburban background, rural background, suburban industrial and rural industrial) in order to examine the strengths and shortcomings of the different air quality markers, namely the NO2 vertical column densities and NO2 surface concentrations. S5P/TROPOMI NO2 surface concentrations are inferred by multiplying the fraction of the satellite and model NO2 vertical column densities with the model surface concentrations. The estimated inferred TROPOMI NO2 surface concentrations are examined further with the altering of three influencing factors: the model vertical leveling scheme, the versions of the TROPOMI NO2 data and the air mass factors applied to the satellite and model NO2 vertical column densities. Overall, the inferred TROPOMI NO2 surface concentrations show a better correlation with the in situ measurements for both time periods and all station types, especially for the industrial stations (R > 0.6) in winter. The calculated correlation for background stations is moderate for both periods (R~0.5 in summer and R > 0.5 in winter), whereas for traffic stations it improves in the winter (from 0.20 to 0.50). After the implementation of the air mass factors from the local model, the bias is significantly reduced for most of the station types, especially in winter for the background stations, ranging from +0.49% for the urban background to +10.37% for the rural background stations. The mean relative bias in winter between the inferred S5P/TROPOMI NO2 surface concentrations and the ground-based measurements for industrial stations is about −15%, whereas for traffic urban stations it is approximately −25%. In summer, biases are generally higher for all station types, especially for the traffic stations (~−75%), ranging from −54% to −30% for the background and industrial stations. As powerful economic and cultural centers, fortified sites played an important role in early medieval society. In Central Europe, early medieval fortified site research has been an essential topic for several generations. However, gradual changes in the landscape are a threat to these cultural heritage monuments. The main task of this paper was to compare the previous results from archaeological excavations with new data acquired by geophysical methods. The presented study is based on the three methods widely used in archaeology: magnetometry, ground-penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity tomography. New surveys provide information about the internal structure and the state of preservation of the fortifications in a non-destructive way. Comparison of the results encourages the evaluation of archaeological excavation and helps determine the suitability and effectiveness of geophysical methods in specific natural conditions. Individual tree detection algorithms (ITD) are used to obtain accurate information about trees. Following the process of individual tree detection, it is possible to use additional processing tools to determine tree parameters such as tree height, crown base height, crown volume, or stem volume. However, many of the methods developed so far have focused on parameterising the algorithms based on the study area, height structure or tree species analysed. Applying the parameters of the method can be challenging in areas with dense and heterogeneous forests with a diverse stand structure. Therefore, this work aimed to develop a method to correct the results of ITD algorithms to identify individual trees more reliably, taking into account different ITD methods based on the Canopy Height Model. In the present study, we proposed a three-step approach to correct segmentation errors. In the first step, erroneous (under- and over-segmentation errors) and correct segments were classified. After classification, the second step was to refine the under-segmentation errors. The final step was to merge segments from the over-segmentation class with correct segments based on the specified conditions. The study was conducted in one of the most complex and diverse forest communities in Europe, making tree identification a major challenge. The accuracy of the segmentation improvements varied depending on the method applied and tree species group examined. Thus, based on the results, the paper advocates for the correction method due to its efficiency in mixed forest stands. Therefore, the present study offers a possible solution to reduce segmentation errors by considering different forest types and different CHM-based ITD methods for identifying individual trees. The objective of this paper is to manifest the intellectual and cognitive structure of CORINE Land Cover (CLC) research applications. Data from the Web of Science (WoS) was used to delimit publication on CLC during the period from 1985 until 2019 (29th April), retrieving a total of 873 documents. Through author citations, the origins and the most influential papers were identified. The main lines of research were identified from word co-occurrences extracted from the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the papers. In the view of both structures, it can be concluded that CORINE land cover constitutes a relatively young set of scientific data, with a constant expansion and a strongly interdisciplinary structure. The development of this application is dependent on the knowledge of such research areas as geography, remote sensing, ecology, forestry, agriculture, engineering, optics, and/or computer science. We believe that this information could be very useful for CLC users, as it reflects a large-scale analysis of the research lines of CLC and illuminates how research has changed over time in diverse areas of applications. Moreover, this study is intended to offer a useful tool for the CLC scientific community, showcasing the main research lines and the most noteworthy papers. The time series of GNSS coordinates contain signals caused by the age-related movement of tectonic plates, the deformation of the Earth's surface, as well as errors at different time scales from sub-daily tidal deformation to the long-term deformation of the surface load. Depending on the nature of the signal, specific approaches are used for both the visual interpretation and pre-processing of time series and their statistical analysis. However, none of the present software analyzes the nature of the residual errors but assumes their random nature and obedience to the classical normal distribution. One of the methods for analyzing the time series of coordinates with residual, unaccounted-for systematic errors is the non-classical error theory of measurements. The result of this work is a developed software solution for analyzing the time series of GNSS coordinates to test their normality, or in other words, to test whether a particular GNSS station is subject to the influence of small, unaccounted-for errors. Conclusions: After testing our software on four reference stations in Europe, we concluded that none of the chosen stations followed the normal law of distribution; thus, it is vital to perform such tests before conducting any experiments on the time series from reference stations. The way we drive, and the transport of today are going through radical changes. Intelligent mobility envisions to improve the efficiency of traditional transportation through advanced digital technologies, such as robotics, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things. Central to the development of intelligent mobility technology is the emergence of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) where vehicles are capable of navigating environments autonomously. For this to be achieved, autonomous vehicles must be safe, trusted by passengers, and other drivers. However, it is practically impossible to train autonomous vehicles with all the possible traffic conditions that they may encounter. The work in this paper presents an alternative solution of using infrastructure to aid CAVs to learn driving policies, specifically for complex junctions, which require local experience and knowledge to handle. The proposal is to learn safe driving policies through data-driven imitation learning of human-driven vehicles at a junction utilizing data captured from surveillance devices about vehicle movements at the junction. The proposed framework is demonstrated by processing video datasets captured from uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) from three intersections around Europe which contain vehicle trajectories. An imitation learning algorithm based on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is proposed to learn and predict safe trajectories of vehicles. The proposed framework can be used for many purposes in intelligent mobility, such as augmenting the intelligent control algorithms in driverless vehicles, benchmarking driver behavior for insurance purposes, and for providing insights to city planning. The signal-in-space range error (SISRE) has a direct impact on the performance of global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs). It is an important indicator of navigation satellite space server performance. The new B-CNAV navigation messages (B-CNAV1 and B-CNAV2) are broadcast on the satellites of the Beidou Global Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3), and they are different from D1 navigation messages in satellite orbit parameters. The orbit accuracy of B-CNAV navigation messages lacks analyses and comparisons with D1. The accuracy and stability of the new hydrogen and rubidium clocks on BDS-3 satellites need annual analyses of long time series, which will affect the service quality of this system. Based on precise ephemeris products from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (COD), the orbit error, clock error, and SISRE of 24 medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellite D1 and B-CNAV navigation messages of BDS-3 were computed, analyzed, and compared. Their annual evolution processes for the entire year of 2022 were studied. Thanks to the use of inter-satellite links (ISLs) adopted by BDS-3 MEO satellites, the ages of the ephemeris are accurate and the percent of ages of data, ephemerides (AODEs), and ages of data and clocks (AODCs) shorter than 12 h were 99.95% and 99.96%, respectively. In addition, the broadcast orbit performance was also improved by ISLs. The root mean square (RMS) values of the BDS-3 MEO broadcast ephemeris orbit error were 0.067 m, 0.273 m, and 0.297 m in the radial, cross, and along directions, respectively. Moreover, the 3D RMS value was 0.450 m. Thanks to the use of new orbit parameters in the B-CNAV navigation messages of BDS-3 MEO, its satellite orbit accuracy was obviously better than that of D1 in the radial direction. Its improved accuracy can reach up to about 1.2 cm, and the percentage of its accuracy improvement was about 19.06%. With respect to clock errors, the timescale differences between the two clock products were eliminated to assess the accuracy of broadcasting ephemeris clock errors. A standard deviation value of 0.256 m shows good performances as a result of the use of the two new types of atomic clocks, although the RMS value was 0.541 m due to a nonzero mean bias. Overall, the accuracy of atomic clocks was good. For the new hydrogen and rubidium atomic clocks, their RMS and standard deviation were 0.563 m and 0.231 m and 0.519 m and 0.281 m, respectively. The stability of the former was better than that of the latter. However, due to the nonzero mean bias the latter was better than the former in accuracy. The RMS value of the SISRE of BDS-3 MEO's broadcast ephemeris was 0.556 m, and the value was 0.920 m when it had a 95% confidence level. In contrast, after deducting the influence of the clock error, the value of SISRE_ORB was 0.092 m. Since the satellite clock error was substantially larger than the orbit radial error, the SISRE was mainly affected by the clock error, and their annual evolutions were consistent. Because of the improvement to the B-CNAV's navigation message with respect to orbit radial accuracy, SISRE_ORB has improved in accuracy. Compared to D1, it had a significant effect on improving the accuracy of SISRE_ORB, and the percentage of the accuracy improvement was 8.40%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil organic carbon (SOC) contents and stocks provide valuable insights into soil health, nutrient cycling, greenhouse gas emissions, and overall ecosystem productivity. Given this, remote sensing data coupled with advanced machine learning (ML) techniques have eased SOC level estimation while revealing its patterns across different ecosystems. However, despite these advances, the intricacies of training reliable and yet certain SOC models for specific end-users remain a great challenge. To address this, we need robust SOC uncertainty quantification techniques. Here, we introduce a methodology that leverages conformal prediction to address the uncertainty in estimating SOC contents while using remote sensing data. Conformal prediction generates statistically reliable uncertainty intervals for predictions made by ML models. Our analysis, performed on the LUCAS dataset in Europe and incorporating a suite of relevant environmental covariates, underscores the efficacy of integrating conformal prediction with another ML model, specifically random forest. In addition, we conducted a comparative assessment of our results against prevalent uncertainty quantification methods for SOC prediction, employing different evaluation metrics to assess both model uncertainty and accuracy. Our methodology showcases the utility of the generated prediction sets as informative indicators of uncertainty. These sets accurately identify samples that pose prediction challenges, providing valuable insights for end-users seeking reliable predictions in the complexities of SOC estimation. Water scarcity and quality deterioration, driven by rapid population growth, urbanization, and intensive industrial and agricultural activities, emphasize the urgency for effective water management. This study aims to develop a model to comprehensively monitor various water quality parameters (WQP) and evaluate the feasibility of implementing this model in real-world scenarios, addressing the limitations of conventional in-situ sampling. Thus, a comprehensive model for monitoring WQP was developed using a 38-year dataset of Landsat imagery and in-situ data from the Water Information System of Europe (WISE), employing Back-Propagated Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Correlation analyses revealed strong associations between remote sensing data and various WQPs, including Total Suspended Solids (TSS), chlorophyll-a (chl-a), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP). Optimal band combinations for each parameter were identified, enhancing the accuracy of the WQP estimation. The ANN-based model exhibited very high accuracy, particularly for chl-a and TSS (R2 > 0.90, NRMSE < 0.79%), surpassing previous studies. The independent validation showcased accurate classification for TSS and TN, while DO estimation faced challenges during high variation periods, highlighting the complexity of DO dynamics. The usability of the developed model was successfully tested in a real-case scenario, proving to be an operational tool for water management. Future research avenues include exploring additional data sources for improved model accuracy, potentially enhancing predictions and expanding the model's utility in diverse environmental contexts. The rapid pace of urbanization and increasing demands for urban functionalities have led to diversification and complexity in the types of urban surface elements. The conventional approach of relying solely on remote sensing imagery for urban surface element extraction faces emerging challenges. Data-driven techniques, including deep learning and machine learning, necessitate a substantial number of annotated samples as prerequisites. In response, our study proposes a knowledge-driven approach that integrates multisource data with ontology to achieve precise urban surface element extraction. Within this framework, components from the EIONET Action Group on Land Monitoring in Europe matrix serve as ontology primitives, forming a shared vocabulary. The semantics of surface elements are deconstructed using these primitives, enabling the creation of specific descriptions for various types of urban surface elements by combining these primitives. Our approach integrates multitemporal high-resolution remote sensing data, network big data, and other heterogeneous data sources. It segments high-resolution images into individual patches, and for each unit, urban surface element classification is accomplished through semantic rule-based inference. We conducted experiments in two regions with varying levels of urban scene complexity, achieving overall accuracies of 93.03% and 97.35%, respectively. Through this knowledge-driven approach, our proposed method significantly enhances the classification performance of urban surface elements in complex scenes, even in the absence of sample data, thereby presenting a novel approach to urban surface element extraction. Impervious surfaces (IS) are a key indicator of environmental quality, and mapping of urban IS is important for a wide range of applications including hydrological modelling, water management, urban and environmental planning and urban climate studies. This paper addresses the accuracy and applicability of vegetation indices (VI), from Landsat imagery, to estimate IS fractions for European cities. The accuracy of three different measures of vegetation cover is examined for eight urban areas at different locations in Europe. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) are converted to IS fractions using a regression modelling approach. Also, NDVI is used to estimate fractional vegetation cover (FR), and consequently IS fractions. All three indices provide fairly accurate estimates (MAEs ≈ 10%, MBE's < 2%) of sub-pixel imperviousness, and are found to be applicable for cities with dissimilar climatic and vegetative conditions. The VI/IS relationship across cities is examined by quantifying the MAEs and MBEs between all combinations of models and urban areas. Also, regional regression models are developed by compiling data from multiple cities to examine the potential for developing and applying a single regression model to estimate IS fractions for numerous urban areas without reducing the accuracy considerably. Our findings indicate that the models can be applied broadly for multiple urban areas, and that the accuracy is reduced only marginally by applying the regional models. SAVI is identified as a superior index for the development of regional quantification models. The findings of this study highlight that IS fractions, and spatiotemporal changes herein, can be mapped by use of simple regression models based on VIs from remote sensors, and that the method presented enables simple, accurate and resource efficient quantification of IS. In recent years, some volcanic eruptions have focused scientists' attention on the detection and monitoring of volcanic clouds, as their impact on the air traffic control system has been unprecedented. In 2010, the Eyjafjallajökull eruption forced the disruption of the airspace of several countries, generating one of the largest air traffic shutdowns ever. Extreme convective events cause many deaths and injuries, and much damage to property every year, accounting for major economic damages related to natural disasters in several countries. Due to global warming, Atlantic tropical cyclones have increased their maximum intensity, hurricanes have more often become extratropical cyclones affecting northern Europe, and southeastern Europe is characterized by increasing annual stormy days. Convective and Volcanic Clouds (CVC) are very dangerous for aviation operations, as they can affect aircraft safety and economic, political, and cultural activities. From the raw measurements at a single Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) ground-based station, the Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) and the tropospheric gradient can be estimated. In order to assimilate such data into Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models, the observation operator must be developed. Our previously developed tropospheric gradient operator is based on a linear combination of tropospheric delays and, therefore, is difficult to implement into NWP Data Assimilation (DA) systems. In this technical note, we develop a fast observation operator. This observation operator is based on an integral expression which contains the north–south and east–west horizontal gradients of refractivity. We run a numerical weather model (the horizontal resolution is 10 km) and show that for stations located in central Europe and in the warm season, the root-mean-square deviation between the tropospheric gradients calculated by the fast and original approach is about 0.15 mm. This deviation is regarded acceptable for assimilation since the typical root-mean-square deviation between observed and forward modelled tropospheric gradients is about 0.5 mm. We then implement the developed operator in our experimental DA system and test the proposed approach. In particular, we analyze the impact of the assimilation on the refractivity field. The widespread tree mortality caused by the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) is a significant concern for Norway spruce-dominated (Picea abies H. Karst) forests in Europe and there is evidence of increases in the affected areas due to climate warming. Effective forest monitoring methods are urgently needed for providing timely data on tree health status for conducting forest management operations that aim to prepare and mitigate the damage caused by the beetle. Unoccupied aircraft systems (UASs) in combination with machine learning image analysis have emerged as a powerful tool for the fast-response monitoring of forest health. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of deep neural networks (DNNs) in identifying bark beetle infestations at the individual tree level from UAS images. The study compares the efficacy of RGB, multispectral (MS), and hyperspectral (HS) imaging, and evaluates various neural network structures for each image type. The findings reveal that MS and HS images perform better than RGB images. A 2D-3D-CNN model trained on HS images proves to be the best for detecting infested trees, with an F1-score of 0.759, while for dead and healthy trees, the F1-scores are 0.880 and 0.928, respectively. The study also demonstrates that the tested classifier networks outperform the state-of-the-art You Only Look Once (YOLO) classifier module, and that an effective analyzer can be implemented by integrating YOLO and the DNN classifier model. The current research provides a foundation for the further exploration of MS and HS imaging in detecting bark beetle disturbances in time, which can play a crucial role in forest management efforts to combat large-scale outbreaks. The study highlights the potential of remote sensing and machine learning in monitoring forest health and mitigating the impacts of biotic stresses. Regional climate change affects the state of inland water bodies and their water balance, which is determined by a number of hydrometeorological and hydrogeological factors. An integral characteristic of changes in the water balance is the behavior of the level of lakes and reservoirs, which not only largely determines the physical and ecological state of water bodies, but also significantly affects the coastal infrastructure and socio-economic development of the region. This paper investigates the interannual variability of the level of the Ladoga and Onega lakes, the largest lakes in Europe located in the northwest of Russia, according to satellite altimetry data for 1993–2020. For this purpose, we used three specialized altimetry databases: DAHITI, G-REALM, and HYDROWEB. Water level data from these altimetry databases were compared with in-situ records at water level gauge stations. Information on air temperature (1945–2019) and precipitation (1966–2019) acquired at three meteostations located at Ladoga and Onega lakes was used to investigate interannual trends in the regional climate change. This paper describes the combination of terrestrial vegetation observations from two sensors, providing a historical dataset used for an in-depth analysis of the corresponding spatio-temporal patterns. The Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) is an important variable suitable for regional to large-scale monitoring of climate impacts on vegetation. In this work, we create an extensive dataset of FAPAR using a 10-day product at ∼1 km resolution from September, 1997, to April, 2012, combining information from two sensors: the NASA/Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) and the European Space Agency (ESA)/Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (MERIS). The proposed methodology reduces the noise, fills the gaps and corrects for the spurious trends in the data, providing a time-consistent coverage of FAPAR. Earth Observation satellite data allows for the monitoring of the surface of our planet at predefined intervals covering large areas. However, there is only one medium resolution sensor family in orbit that enables an observation time span of 40 and more years at a daily repeat interval. This is the AVHRR sensor family. If we want to investigate the long-term impacts of climate change on our environment, we can only do so based on data that remains available for several decades. If we then want to investigate processes with respect to climate change, we need very high temporal resolution enabling the generation of long-term time series and the derivation of related statistical parameters such as mean, variability, anomalies, and trends. The challenges to generating a well calibrated and harmonized 40-year-long time series based on AVHRR sensor data flown on 14 different platforms are enormous. However, only extremely thorough pre-processing and harmonization ensures that trends found in the data are real trends and not sensor-related (or other) artefacts. The generation of European-wide time series as a basis for the derivation of a multitude of parameters is therefore an extremely challenging task, the details of which are presented in this paper. Observations from permanent GNSS stations are actively used for the research and monitoring of geodynamic processes. Today, with the use of modern scientific programs and IGS products, it is possible to determine GNSS station coordinates and velocities at the level of a few millimeters. However, the scientific community constantly faces the question of increasing the accuracy of coordinate definitions to obtain more reliable data in the study of geodynamic phenomena. One of the main sources of errors is systematic measurement errors. To date, the procedure for their removal is still incomplete and imperfect. Also, during the processing of long-term GNSS measurements, it was found that the coordinate time series, after the removal of trend effects, are also characterized by seasonal variations, mainly of annual and semi-annual periods. We estimated the daily coordinate time series of 10 permanent GNSS stations in the central-eastern part of Europe from 2001 to 2019 and calculated the seasonal variation coefficients for these stations. The average value of the coefficients for the annual cycle for the N, E, and H components is −0.7, −0.2, and −0.7 mm, and for the semi-annual cycle the average value is 0.3, 0.4, and −0.5 mm. The obtained coefficients are less than 1 mm, which is why it can be argued that there is no seasonal component in the coordinate time series or that it is so small that it is a problematic task to calculate it. This practical absence of a seasonal component in long-term time series of GNSS coordinates, in our opinion, is partly compensated by the use of modern models of mapping functions (such as VMF3) for zenith tropospheric delays instead of the empirical GMF. To test the obtained results, we calculated the coefficients of seasonal variations for the sub-network of GNSS stations included in the category of the best EPN stations—C0 and C1. The values of the coefficients for the stations of this network are also less than 1 mm, which confirms the previous statement about the absence of a seasonal component in the long-term time series of coordinates. We also checked the presence of seasonal changes in the time series using the well-known decomposition procedure, which showed that the seasonal component is not observed because the content does not exceed 10% for additive decomposition and 20% for multiplicative decomposition. Today societies face an unprecedented challenge to limit global warming and restore agricultural soils. Recent studies show that the introduction of cover crops over Europe could result in a cooling impact due to an increase in soil organic carbon stocks, a decrease in the use of fertilizers, and an increase in surface albedo of the croplands. Based on the use of remote sensing data, land cover database, meteorological data, national agricultural statistics, and ground measurements, a generic model was developed to simulate the radiative forcing following the change in surface albedo. This article analyzes the impact of the introduction of cover crops in Europe during the fallow periods. Compared to previous studies, this work discusses: (i) The maximum greening potential in Europe and the associated indirect surface properties changes (ii) for snowfall episodes, and (iii) due to an increase in organic matter. This study shows that the mitigation potential of cover crops through albedo effects could reach 6.74 MtCO2-eq.yr−1 by extending the periods of the introduction of the cover crops to all possible fallow periods. This mitigation could be limited to 5.68 MtCO2-eq.yr−1 if the impact of snowfalls is considered. This would be equivalent to 9.12 gCO2.m−2.yr−1. Finally, this study investigates the feedback loop due to soil darkening with soil organic carbon content increase when cover crops are introduced, considering two scenarios. The first considers the soil organic carbon content increase following repeated incorporation of cover crop biomass into the soil, simulated with the DayCent model. The second, more conceptual and extreme scenario aims at alerting on the possible impact of a combination of carbon farming practices, such as biochar or organic amendments. Our results show that this effect could lead to a loss of 20% of the climate benefit (i.e., 5.39 MtCO2-eq.yr−1). In conclusion, this study shows that cover crops have a strong potential for climate mitigation through direct albedo effects (soil coverage). Functioning ecosystems offer multiple services for human well-being (e.g., food, freshwater, fiber). Agriculture provides several of these services but also can cause negative impacts. Thus, it is essential to derive up-to-date information about agricultural land use and its change. This paper describes the multi-temporal classification of agricultural land use based on high resolution spotlight TerraSAR-X images. A stack of 14 dual-polarized radar images taken during the vegetation season have been used for two different study areas (North of Germany and Southeast Poland). They represent extremely diverse regions with regard to their population density, agricultural management, as well as geological and geomorphological conditions. Thereby, the transferability of the classification method for different regions is tested. The Maximum Likelihood classification is based on a high amount of ground truth samples. Classification accuracies differ in both regions. Overall accuracy for all classes for the German area is 61.78% and 39.25% for the Polish region. Accuracies improved notably for both regions (about 90%) when single vegetation classes were merged into groups of classes. Such regular land use classifications, applicable for different European agricultural sites, can serve as basis for monitoring systems for agricultural land use and its related ecosystems. The recent COVID-19 pandemic affected various aspects of life. Several studies established the consequences of pandemic lockdown on air quality using satellite remote sensing. However, such studies have limitations, including low spatial resolution or incomplete spatial coverage. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a machine learning-based scheme to solve the pre-mentioned limitations by training an optimized space-time extra trees model for each year of the study period. The results have shown that our trained models reach a prediction accuracy up to 95% when predicting the missing values in the MODIS MCD19A2 Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) product. The outcome of the mentioned scheme was a geo-harmonized atmospheric dataset for aerosol optical depth at 550 nm with 1 km spatial resolution and full coverage over Europe. As an application, we used the proposed machine learning based prediction approach in AOD levels analysis. We compared the mean AOD levels between the lockdown period from March to June in 2020 and the mean AOD values of the same period for the past 5 years. We found that AOD levels dropped over most European countries in 2020 but increased in several eastern and western countries. The Netherlands had the most significant average decrease in AOD levels (19%), while Spain had the highest average increase (10%). Moreover, we analyzed the relationship between the relative percentage difference of AOD and four meteorological variables. We found a positive correlation between AOD and relative humidity and a negative correlation between AOD and wind speed. The value of the proposed prediction scheme is further emphasized by taking into consideration that the reconstructed dataset can be used for future air quality studies concerning Europe. Agricultural land abandonment is an increasing problem in Europe. The Comunitat Valenciana Region (Spain) is one of the most important citrus producers in Europe suffering this problem. This region characterizes by small sized citrus plots and high spatial fragmentation which makes necessary to use Very High-Resolution images to detect abandoned plots. In this paper spectral and Gray Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM)-based textural information derived from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are used to map abandoned citrus plots in Oliva municipality (eastern Spain). The proposed methodology is based on three general steps: (a) extraction of spectral and textural features from the image, (b) pixel-based classification of the image using the Random Forest algorithm, and (c) assignment of a single value per plot by majority voting. The best results were obtained when extracting the texture features with a 9 × 9 window size and the Random Forest model showed convergence around 100 decision trees. Cross-validation of the model showed an overall accuracy of the pixel-based classification of 87% and an overall accuracy of the plot-based classification of 95%. All the variables used are statistically significant for the classification, however the most important were contrast, dissimilarity, NIR band (720 nm), and blue band (620 nm). According to our results, 31% of the plots classified as citrus in Oliva by current methodology are abandoned. This is very important to avoid overestimating crop yield calculations by public administrations. The model was applied successfully outside the main study area (Oliva municipality); with a slightly lower accuracy (92%). Time series of optical remote sensing data are instrumental for monitoring vegetation dynamics, but are hampered by missing or noisy observations due to varying atmospheric conditions. Reconstruction methods have been proposed, most of which focus on time series of a single vegetation index. Under the assumption that relatively high vegetation index values can be considered as trustworthy, a successful approach is to adjust the smoothed value to the upper envelope of the time series. However, this assumption does not hold for surface reflectance in general. Clouds and cloud shadows result in, respectively, high and low values in the visible and near infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum. A novel spectral Reflectance Time Series Reconstruction (RTSR) method is proposed. Smoothed values of surface reflectance values are adjusted to approach the trustworthy observations, using a vegetation index as a proxy for reliability. The Savitzky–Golay filter was used as the smoothing algorithm here, but different filters can be used as well. The RTSR was evaluated on 100 sites in Europe, with a focus on agriculture fields. Its potential was shown using different criteria, including smoothness and the ability to retain trustworthy observations in the original time series with RMSE values in the order of 0.01 to 0.03 in terms of surface reflectance. The development of a sustainable water quality monitoring system at national scale remains a big challenge until today, acting as a hindrance for the efficient implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). This work provides valuable insights into the current state-of-the-art Earth Observation (EO) tools and services, proposing a synergistic use of innovative remote sensing technologies, in situ sensors, and databases, with the ultimate goal to support the European Member States in effective WFD implementation. The proposed approach is based on a recent research and scientific analysis for a six-year period (2017–2022) after reviewing 71 peer-reviewed articles in international journals coupled with the scientific results of 11 European-founded research projects related to EO and WFD. Special focus is placed on the EO data sources (spaceborne, in situ, etc.), the sensors in use, the observed water Quality Elements as well as on the computer science techniques (machine/deep learning, artificial intelligence, etc.). The combination of the different technologies can offer, among other things, low-cost monitoring, an increase in the monitored Quality Elements per water body, and a minimization of the percentage of water bodies with unknown ecological status. Remote sensing image composites are crucial for a wide range of remote sensing applications, such as multi-decadal time series analysis. The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument has provided daily data since the early 1980s at a spatial resolution of 1 km, allowing analyses of climate change-related environmental processes. For monitoring vegetation conditions, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is the most widely used metric. However, to actually enable such analyses, a consistent NDVI time series over the AVHRR time-span needs to be created. In this context, the aim of this study is to thoroughly assess the effect of different compositing procedures on AVHRR NDVI composites, as no standard procedure has been established. Thirteen different compositing methods have been implemented; daily, decadal, and monthly composites over Europe and Northern Africa have been calculated for the year 2007, and the resulting data sets have been thoroughly evaluated according to six criteria. The median approach was selected as the best-performing compositing algorithm considering all the investigated aspects. However, the combination of the NDVI value and viewing and illumination angles as the criteria for the best-pixel selection proved to be a promising approach, too. The generated NDVI time series, currently ranging from 1981–2018, shows a consistent behavior and close agreement to the standard MODIS NDVI product. Most of the recent research in the field of marine target detection has been concentrating on ships with large metallic parts. The focus of this work is on much more challenging targets represented by small rubber inflatables. They are of importance, since in recent years they have largely been used by migrants to cross the Mediterranean Sea between Libya and Europe. The motivation of this research is to mitigate the ongoing humanitarian crisis at Europe's southern borders. These boats, packed with up to 200 people, are in no way suitable to cross the Mediterranean Sea or any other big water body and are in distress from the moment of departure. The establishment of a satellite-based surveillance infrastructure could considerably support search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean Sea, reduce the number of such boats being missed and mitigate the ongoing death in the open ocean. In this work we describe and analyze data from the InflateSAR acquisition campaign, wherein we gathered multiple-platform SAR imagery of an original refugee inflatable. The test site for this campaign is a lake which provides background clutter that is more predictable. The analysis considered a sum of experiments, enabling investigations of a broad range of scene settings, such as the vessel's orientation, superstructures and speed. We assess their impact on the detectability of the chosen target under different sensor parameters, such as polarimetry, resolution and incidence angle. Results show that TerraSAR-X Spotlight and Stripmap modes offer good capabilities to potentially detect those types of boats in distress. Low incidence angles and cross-polarization decrease the chance of a successful identification, whereas a fully occupied inflatable, orthogonally oriented to the line of sight, seems to be better visible than an empty one. The polarimetric analyses prove the vessel's different polarimetric behavior in comparison with the water surface, especially when it comes to entropy. The analysis considered state-of-the-art methodologies with single polarization and dual polarization channels. Finally, different metrics are used to discuss whether and to which extent the results are applicable to other open ocean datasets. This paper does not introduce any vessel detection or classification algorithm from SAR images. The Water Framework Directive in Europe requires extending metering and water abstraction controls to accurately satisfy the necessary water resource requirements. However, in situ measurement instruments are inappropriate for large irrigation surface areas, considering the high investment and maintenance service costs. In this study, Remote Sensing-based Irrigation Water Accounting (RS-IWA) (previously evaluated for commercial plots, water user associations, and groundwater water management scales) was applied to over 11 Spanish river basin districts during the period of 2014–2018. Using the FAO56 methodology and incorporating remote sensing basal crop coefficient time series to simulate the Remote Sensing-based Soil Water Balance (RS-SWB), we were able to provide spatially and temporally distributed net irrigation requirements. The results were evaluated against the irrigation water demands estimated by the Hydrological Planning Offices and published in the River Basin Management Plans applying the same spatial (Agricultural Demand Units and Exploitation Systems) and temporal (annual and monthly) water management scales used by these public water managers, ultimately returning ranges of agreement (r2 and dr) (Willmott refined index) of 0.79 and 0.99, respectively. Thus, this paper presents an operational tool for providing updated spatio-temporal maps of RS-IWA over large and diverse irrigation surface areas, which is ready to serve as a complementary irrigation water monitoring and management tool. The environmental challenges the world faces have never been greater or more complex. Global areas that are covered by forests and urban woodlands are threatened by large-scale forest fires that have increased dramatically during the last decades in Europe and worldwide, in terms of both frequency and magnitude. To this end, rapid advances in remote sensing systems including ground-based, unmanned aerial vehicle-based and satellite-based systems have been adopted for effective forest fire surveillance. In this paper, the recently introduced 360-degree sensor cameras are proposed for early fire detection, making it possible to obtain unlimited field of view captures which reduce the number of required sensors and the computational cost and make the systems more efficient. More specifically, once optical 360-degree raw data are obtained using an RGB 360-degree camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle, we convert the equirectangular projection format images to stereographic images. Then, two DeepLab V3+ networks are applied to perform flame and smoke segmentation, respectively. Subsequently, a novel post-validation adaptive method is proposed exploiting the environmental appearance of each test image and reducing the false-positive rates. For evaluating the performance of the proposed system, a dataset, namely the "Fire detection 360-degree dataset", consisting of 150 unlimited field of view images that contain both synthetic and real fire, was created. Experimental results demonstrate the great potential of the proposed system, which has achieved an F-score fire detection rate equal to 94.6%, hence reducing the number of required sensors. Europe's mountain forests, which are naturally valuable areas due to their high biodiversity and well-preserved natural characteristics, are experiencing major alterations, so an important component of monitoring is obtaining up-to-date information concerning species composition, extent, and location. An important aspect of mapping tree stands is the selection of remote sensing data that vary in temporal, spectral, and spatial resolution, as well as in open and commercial access. For the Tatra Mountains area, which is a unique alpine ecosystem in central Europe, we classified 13 woody species by iterative machine learning methods using random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms of more than 1000 polygons collected in the field. For this task, we used free Sentinel-2 multitemporal satellite data (10 m pixel size, 12 spectral bands, and 21 acquisition dates), commercial PlanetScope data (3 m pixel size, 8 spectral bands, and 3 acquisitions dates), and airborne HySpex hyperspectral data (2 m pixel size, 430 spectral bands, and a single acquisition) with fusion of the data of topographic derivatives based on Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. The iterative classification method achieved the highest F1-score with HySpex (0.95 RF; 0.92 SVM) imagery, but the multitemporal Sentinel-2 data cube, which consisted of 21 scenes, offered comparable results (0.93 RF; 0.89 SVM). The use of very long spatial datasets from satellites has opened up numerous opportunities, including the monitoring of vegetation phenology over the course of time. Considering the importance of grassland systems and the influence of climate change on their phenology, the specific objectives of this study are: (a) to identify a methodology for a reliable estimation of grassland phenological dates from a satellite vegetation index (i.e., kernel normalized difference vegetation index, kNDVI) and (b) to quantify the changes that have occurred over the period 2001–2021 in a representative dataset of European grasslands and assess the extent of climate change impacts. In order to identify the best methodological approach for estimating the start (SOS), peak (POS) and end (EOS) of the growing season from the satellite, we compared dates extracted from the MODIS-kNDVI annual trajectories with different combinations of fitting models (FMs) and extraction methods (EM), with those extracted from the gross primary productivity (GPP) measured from eddy covariance flux towers in specific grasslands. SOS and POS were effectively identified with various FM×EM approaches, whereas satellite-EOS did not obtain sufficiently reliable estimates and was excluded from the trend analysis. The methodological indications (i.e., FM×EM selection) were then used to calculate the SOS and POS for 31 grassland sites in Europe from MODIS-kNDVI during the period 2001–2021. SOS tended towards an anticipation at the majority of sites (83.9%), with an average advance at significant sites of 0.76 days year−1. For POS, the trend was also towards advancement, although the results are less homogeneous (67.7% of sites with advancement), and with a less marked advance at significant sites (0.56 days year−1). From the analyses carried out, the SOS and POS of several sites were influenced by the winter and spring temperatures, which recorded rises during the period 2001–2021. Contrasting results were recorded for the SOS-POS duration, which did not show a clear trend towards lengthening or shortening. Considering latitude and altitude, the results highlighted that the greatest changes in terms of SOS and POS anticipation were recorded for sites at higher latitudes and lower altitudes. Reflectance of light across the visible, near-infrared and shortwave infrared (VIS-NIR-SWIR, 0.4–2.5 µm) spectral region is very useful for investigating mineralogical, physical and chemical properties of soils, which can reduce the need for traditional wet chemistry analyses. As many collections of multispectral satellite data are available for environmental studies, a large extent with medium resolution mapping could be benefited from the spectral measurements made from remote sensors. In this paper, we explored the use of bare soil composites generated from the large historical collections of Landsat images for mapping cropland topsoil attributes across the European extent. For this task, we used the Geospatial Soil Sensing System (GEOS3) for generating two bare soil composites of 30 m resolution (named synthetic soil images, SYSI), which were employed to represent the median topsoil reflectance of bare fields. The first (framed SYSI) was made with multitemporal images (2006–2012) framed to the survey time of the Land-Use/Land-Cover Area Frame Survey (LUCAS) soil dataset (2009), seeking to be more compatible to the soil condition upon the sampling campaign. The second (full SYSI) was generated from the full collection of Landsat images (1982–2018), which although displaced to the field survey, yields a higher proportion of bare areas for soil mapping. For evaluating the two SYSIs, we used the laboratory spectral data as a reference of topsoil reflectance to calculate the Spearman correlation coefficient. Furthermore, both SYSIs employed machine learning for calibrating prediction models of clay, sand, soil organic carbon (SOC), calcium carbonates (CaCO3), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and pH determined in water, using the gradient boosting regression algorithm. The original LUCAS laboratory spectra and a version of the data resampled to the Landsat multispectral bands were also used as reference of prediction performance using VIS-NIR-SWIR multispectral data. Our results suggest that generating a bare soil composite displaced to the survey time of soil observations did not improve the quality of topsoil reflectance, and consequently, the prediction performance of soil attributes. Despite the lower spectral resolution and the variability of soils in Europe, a SYSI calculated from the full collection of Landsat images can be employed for topsoil prediction of clay and CaCO3 contents with a moderate performance (testing R2, root mean square error (RMSE) and ratio of performance to interquartile range (RPIQ) of 0.44, 9.59, 1.77, and 0.36, 13.99, 1.54, respectively). Thus, this study shows that although there exist some constraints due to the spatial and temporal variation of soil exposures and among the Landsat sensors, it is possible to use bare soil composites for mapping key soil attributes of croplands across the European extent. The differential code bias (DCB) of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receiver should be precisely corrected when conducting ionospheric remote sensing and precise point positioning. The DCBs can usually be estimated by the ground GNSS network based on the parameterization of the global ionosphere together with the global ionospheric map (GIM). In order to reduce the spatial-temporal complexities, various algorithms based on GIM and local ionospheric modeling are conducted, but rely on station selection. In this paper, we present a recursive method to estimate the DCBs of Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites based on a recursive filter and independent reference station selection procedure. The satellite and receiver DCBs are estimated once per local day and aligned with the DCB product provided by the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE). From the statistical analysis with CODE DCB products, the results show that the accuracy of GPS satellite DCB estimates obtained by the recursive method can reach about 0.10 ns under solar quiet condition. The influence of stations with bad performances on DCB estimation can be reduced through the independent iterative reference selection. The accuracy of local ionospheric modeling based on recursive filter is less than 2 Total Electron Content Unit (TECU) in the monthly median sense. The performance of the recursive method is also evaluated under different solar conditions and the results show that the local ionospheric modeling is sensitive to solar conditions. Land cover area estimates can be derived via design-based approaches using a probability (random) reference sample. The collection of samples is usually costly and requires an effective sampling design. Earth-Observation-based mapping approaches do not have this requirement but can be biased in providing area estimates. Combining reference samples with remote sensing products can reduce sampling efforts and provide a more effective method to estimate land cover. The Copernicus High-Resolution Layer (HRL) provides remote-sensing-based data across Europe to support area estimation. Different methods are tested to estimate areas of imperviousness in four selected countries in Europe to demonstrate the use and shortcomings of existing reference information from the LUCAS survey program and the HRL Imperviousness products from 2015 and 2018. High-precision habitat mapping can contribute to the identification and quantification of the human footprint on the seafloor. As a representative of seafloor habitats, seabed sediment classification is crucial for marine geological research, marine environment monitoring, marine engineering construction, and seabed biotic and abiotic resource assessment. Multibeam echo-sounding systems (MBES) have become the most popular tool in terms of acoustic equipment for seabed sediment classification. However, sonar images tend to consist of obvious noise and stripe interference. Furthermore, the low efficiency and high cost of seafloor field sampling leads to limited field samples. The factors above restrict high accuracy classification by a single classifier. To further investigate the classification techniques for seabed sediments, we developed a decision fusion algorithm based on voting strategies and fuzzy membership rules to integrate the merits of deep learning and shallow learning methods. First, in order to overcome the influence of obvious noise and the lack of training samples, we employed an effective deep learning framework, namely random patches network (RPNet), for classification. Then, to alleviate the over-smoothness and misclassifications of RPNet, the misclassified pixels with a lower fuzzy membership degree were rectified by other shallow learning classifiers, using the proposed decision fusion algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed method was tested in two areas of Europe. The results show that RPNet outperforms other traditional classification methods, and the decision fusion framework further improves the accuracy compared with the results of a single classifier. Weighted average temperature (Tm) plays a crucial role in global navigation satellite system (GNSS) precipitable water vapor (PWV) retrieval. Aiming at the poor applicability of the existing Tm models in Europe, in the article, we used observations from 48 radiosonde stations over Europe from 2014 to 2020 to establish a weighted average temperature model in Europe (ETm) by the nonlinear least squares estimation method. The ETm model takes into account factors such as ground temperature, water vapor pressure, latitude, and their annual variation, semiannual variation and diurnal variation. Taking the Tm obtained from the radiosonde data by the integration method in 2021 as the reference value, the accuracy of the ETm model was evaluated and compared with the commonly used Bevis model, ETmPoly model, and GPT2w model. The results of the 48 modeled stations showed that the mean bias and root mean square (RMS) values of the ETm model were 0.06 and 2.85 K, respectively, which were 21.7%, 11.5%, and 31.8% higher than the Bevis, ETmPoly, and GPT2w-1 (1° × 1° resolution) models, respectively. In addition, the radiosonde data of 12 non-modeling stations over Europe in 2021 were selected to participate in the model accuracy validation. The mean bias and RMS values of the ETm model were –0.07 and 2.87 K, respectively. Compared with the Bevis, ETmPoly, and GPT2w-1 models, the accuracy (in terms of RMS values) increased by 20.5%, 10.6%, and 35.2%, respectively. Finally, to further verify the superiority of the ETm model, the ETm model, and other Tm models were applied to the GNSS PWV calculation. The ETm model had mean RMSPWV and RMSPWV/PWV values of 0.17 mm and 1.03%, respectively, which were less than other Tm models. Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) maps can be effectively produced by cost-effective and frequent satellite observations. Powerful cloud computing platforms are emerging as a growing trend in the high utilization of freely accessible remotely sensed data for LULC mapping over large-scale regions using big geodata. This study proposes a workflow to generate a 10 m LULC map of Europe with nine classes, ELULC-10, using European Sentinel-1/-2 and Landsat-8 images, as well as the LUCAS reference samples. More than 200 K and 300 K of in situ surveys and images, respectively, were employed as inputs in the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to perform classification by an object-based segmentation algorithm and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). A novel ANN-based data preparation was also presented to remove noisy reference samples from the LUCAS dataset. Additionally, the map was improved using several rule-based post-processing steps. The overall accuracy and kappa coefficient of 2021 ELULC-10 were 95.38% and 0.94, respectively. A detailed report of the classification accuracies was also provided, demonstrating an accurate classification of different classes, such as Woodland and Cropland. Furthermore, rule-based post processing improved LULC class identifications when compared with current studies. The workflow could also supply seasonal, yearly, and change maps considering the proposed integration of complex machine learning algorithms and large satellite and survey data. In the Global Navigation Satellite System, ionospheric delay is a significant source of error. The magnitude of the ionosphere total electron content (TEC) directly impacts the magnitude of the ionospheric delay. Correcting the ionospheric delay and improving the accuracy of satellite navigation positioning can both benefit from the accurate modeling and forecasting of ionospheric TEC. The majority of current ionospheric TEC forecasting research only considers the temporal or spatial dimensions, ignoring the ionospheric TEC's spatial and temporal autocorrelation. Therefore, we constructed a spatiotemporal network model with two modules: (i) global spatiotemporal characteristics extraction via forwarding spatiotemporal characteristics transfer and (ii) regional spatiotemporal characteristics correction via reverse spatiotemporal characteristics transfer. This model can realize the complementarity of TEC global spatiotemporal characteristics and regional spatiotemporal characteristics. It also ensures that the global spatiotemporal characteristics of the global ionospheric TEC are transferred to each other in both temporal and spatial domains at the same time. The spatiotemporal network model thus achieves a spatiotemporal prediction of global ionospheric TEC. The Huber loss function is also used to suppress the gross error and noise in the ionospheric TEC data to improve the forecasting accuracy of global ionospheric TEC. We compare the results of the spatiotemporal network model with the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE), the convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (convLSTM) model and the Predictive Recurrent Neural Network (PredRNN) model for one-day forecasts of global ionospheric TEC under different conditions of time and solar activity, respectively. With internal data validation, the average root mean square error (RMSE) of our proposed algorithm increased by 21.19, 15.75, and 9.67%, respectively, during the maximum solar activity period. During the minimum solar activity period, the RMSE improved by 38.69, 38.02, and 13.54%, respectively. In Europe, heating of houses and commercial areas is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. When considering the drastic impact of an increasing emission of greenhouse gases as well as the finiteness of fossil resources, the usage of efficient and renewable energy generation technologies has to be increased. In this context, small-scale heating networks are an important technical component, which enable the efficient and sustainable usage of various heat generation technologies. This paper investigates how the potential of district heating for different settlement structures can be assessed. In particular, we analyze in which way remote sensing and GIS data can assist the planning of optimized heat allocation systems. In order to identify the best suited locations, a spatial model is defined to assess the potential for small district heating networks. Within the spatial model, the local heat demand and the economic costs of the necessary heat allocation infrastructure are compared. Therefore, a first and major step is the detailed characterization of the settlement structure by means of remote sensing data. The method is developed on the basis of a test area in the town of Oberhaching in the South of Germany. The results are validated through detailed in situ data sets and demonstrate that the model facilitates both the calculation of the required input parameters and an accurate assessment of the district heating potential. The described method can be transferred to other investigation areas with a larger spatial extent. The meteorological reanalysis data has been widely applied to derive zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) with a high spatial and temporal resolution. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, machine learning also begins as a high-efficiency tool to be employed in modeling and predicting ZTD. In this paper, we develop three new regional ZTD models based on the least squares support vector machine (LSSVM), using both the International GNSS Service (IGS)-ZTD products and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis 5 (ERA5) data over Europe throughout 2018. Among them, the ERA5 data is extended to ERA5S-ZTD and ERA5P-ZTD as the background data by the model method and integral method, respectively. Depending on different background data, three schemes are designed to construct ZTD models based on the LSSVM algorithm, including the without background data, with the ERA5S-ZTD, and with the ERA5P-ZTD. To investigate the advantage and feasibility of the proposed ZTD models, we evaluate the accuracy of two background data and three schemes by segmental comparison with the IGS-ZTD of 85 IGS stations in Europe. The results show that the overall average Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) value of all sites is 30.1 mm for the ERA5S-ZTD, and 10.7 mm for the ERA5P-ZTD. The overall average RMSE is 25.8 mm, 22.9 mm, and 9 mm for the three schemes, respectively. Moreover, the overall improvement rate is 19.1% and 1.6% for the ZTD model with ERA5S-ZTD and ERA5P-ZTD, respectively. In order to explore the reason of the lower improvement for the ZTD model with ERA5P-ZTD, the loop verification is performed by estimating the ZTD values of each available IGS station. In actuality, the monthly improvement rate of estimated ZTD is positive for most stations, and the biggest improvement rate can even reach about 40%. The negative rate mainly comes from specific stations, these stations are located on the edge of the region, near the coast, as well as the lower similarity between the individual verified station and training stations. Land surface phenology (LSP), the study of the timing of recurring cycles of changes in the land surface using time-series of satellite sensor-derived vegetation indices, is a valuable tool for monitoring vegetation at global and continental scales. Characterisation of LSP and its spatial variation is required to reveal and predict ongoing changes in Earth system dynamics. This study presents and analyses the LSP of the pan-European continent for the last decade, considering three phenological metrics: onset of greenness (OG), end of senescence (EOS), and length of season (LS). The whole time-series of Multi-temporal Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI) data at 1 km spatial resolution was used to estimate the phenological metrics. Results show a progressive pattern in phenophases from low to high latitudes. OG dates are distributed widely from the end of December to the end of May. EOS dates range from the end of May to the end of January and the spatial distribution is generally the inverse of that of the OG. Shorter growing seasons (approximately three months) are associated with rainfed croplands in Western Europe, and forests in boreal and mountainous areas. Maximum LS values appear in the Atlantic basin associated with grasslands. The LSP maps presented in this study are supported by the findings of a previous study where OG and EOS estimates were compared to those of the pan-European phenological network at certain locations corresponding to numerous observations of deciduous tree plant species. Moreover, the spatio-temporal pattern of the OG and EOS produced close agreement with the dates of deciduous tree leaf unfolding and autumnal colouring, respectively (pseudo R-squared equal to 0.70 and 0.71 and root mean square error of six days (over 365 days)). The AVHRR aerosol optical depth (AOD) is inverted from measured reflectances in the red band using a statistical correlation of surface reflectance with mid-infrared channel reflectances and a modelling climatology of the aerosol type. For such a sensor not specifically designed for AOD retrieval, propagating uncertainties is crucial because the sensitivity of the retrieved AOD to the measured signal varies largely with retrieval conditions (AOD itself, surface brightness, aerosol optical properties/aerosol type, observing geometry). In order to quantify the different contributions to the AOD uncertainties, we have undertaken a thorough analysis of the retrieval operator and its sensitivities to the used input and auxiliary variables. Uncertainties are then propagated from measured reflectances to geophysical retrieved AOD datasets at the super-pixel level and further to gridded daily and monthly products. The propagation uses uncertainty correlations of separate uncertainty contributions from the FIDUCEO easyFCDR level1b products (common fully correlated, independent random, and structured parts) and estimated uncertainty correlation structures of other major effects in the retrieval (surface brightness, aerosol type ensemble, cloud mask). The pixel-level uncertainties are statistically validated against true error estimates versus AERONET ground-based AOD measurements. It is shown that a 10-year time record over Europe compares well to a merged multi-satellite record and that pixel-level uncertainties provide a meaningful representation of error distributions. The study demonstrates the benefits of new recipes for uncertainty characterization from the Horizon-2020 project FIDUCEO ("Fidelity and uncertainty in climate data records from Earth Observations") and extends them further with recent additions developed within the ESA Climate Change Initiative. A spatiotemporally extended dust aerosol episode that occurred over the Mediterranean Basin (MB) from 16 to 18 June 2016 is investigated using observational satellite and reanalysis data, focusing on the effects of high dust loads on cloud formation and temperature fields, including the creation of temperature inversions. The atmospheric conditions before and during the 3-day dust aerosol episode case (DAEC) are also analyzed. The dust episode, which is identified using a contemporary satellite algorithm, consists of long-range transport of African dust to the western and central MB. The day to day, before and during the DAEC, atmospheric circulation, dust-cloud interactions, and dust effect on temperature are examined using a variety of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Level-3 Collection 6.1 satellite and Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis data. According to the obtained results, the dust export from N. Africa, which occurs under the prevalence of a trough over the western MB, and a ridge over the central MB, extends from southwest to northeast along two axes, one in the western and another in the central Mediterranean, covering remote areas up to the coasts of southern Europe, including the Balearic and Tyrrhenian Seas, the Italian peninsula, the Ionian and Adriatic Seas, and the Balkan peninsula. The analysis provides evidence of the formation of mixed-phase clouds, with high cloud-top heights (CTH higher than 10 km) and low cloud-top temperatures (CTT as low as 230 K), which spatiotemporally coincide with the high dust loadings that provide the necessary CCN and IN. Dust aerosols are transported either in the boundary layer (within the first 1–2 km) of areas close to the North African dust source areas or in the free troposphere over the Mediterranean Sea and the Italian and Balkan peninsulas (between 2 and 8 km). Distinct and extended layers of remarkable temperature inversions (up to 20 K/km) are created below the exported dust layers in the boundary layer of Mediterranean Sea areas, while weak/reduced lapse rates are formed over continental areas of MB undergoing the dust transport. Today, European forests face many challenges but also offer opportunities, such as climate change mitigation, provision of renewable resources, energy and other ecosystem services. Large-scale analyses to assess these opportunities are hindered by the lack of a consistent, spatial and accessible forest structure data. This study presents a freely available pan-European forest structure data set. Building on our previous work, we used data from six additional countries and consider now ten key forest stand variables. Harmonized inventory data from 16 European countries were used in combination with remote sensing data and a gap-filling algorithm to produce this consistent and comparable forest structure data set across European forests. We showed how land cover data can be used to scale inventory data to a higher resolution which in turn ensures a consistent data structure across sub-regional, country and European forest assessments. Cross validation and comparison with published country statistics of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) indicate that the chosen methodology is able to produce robust and accurate forest structure data across Europe, even for areas where no inventory data were available. Biomass and bioenergy play a central role in Europe's Green Transition. Currently, biomass is representing half of the renewable energy sources used. While the role of renewables in the energy mix is undisputed, there have been many controversial discussions on the use of biomass for energy due to the "food versus fuel" debate. Using previously underutilized lands for bioenergy is one possibility to prevent this discussion. This study supports the attempts to increase biomass for bioenergy through the provision of improved methods to identify underutilized lands in Europe. We employ advanced analysis methods based on time series modelling using Sentinel-2 (S2) data from 2017 to 2019 in order to distinguish utilized from underutilized land in twelve study areas in different bio-geographical regions (BGR) across Europe. The calculated parameters of the computed model function combined with temporal statistics were used to train a random forest classifier (RF). The achieved overall accuracies (OA) per study area vary between 80.25 and 96.76%, with confidence intervals (CI) ranging between 1.77% and 6.28% at a 95% confidence level. All in all, nearly 500,000 ha of underutilized land potentially available for agricultural bioenergy production were identified in this study, with the greatest amount mapped in Eastern Europe. Time series of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) are important data sources for environmental monitoring. Continuous efforts are put into their production and updating. The recently released Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS) NDVI3g data set is a consistent time series with 1/12° spatial and bi-monthly temporal resolution. It covers the time period from 1981 to 2011. However, it is unclear if vegetation density and phenology derived from GIMMS are comparable to those obtained from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) NDVI with 250 m ground resolution. To check the consistency between GIMMS and MODIS data sets, a comparative analysis was performed. For a large European window (40 × 40°), data distribution, spatial and temporal agreement were analyzed, as well as the timing of important phenological events. Overall, only a moderately good agreement of NDVI values was found. Large differences occurred during winter. Large discrepancies were also observed for phenological metrics, in particular the start of season. Information regarding the maximum of season was more consistent. A satellite-based climate record of monthly mean surface solar irradiance (SIS) is investigated with regard to possible inhomogeneities in time. The data record is provided by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Satellite Application Facility on Climate Monitoring (CM SAF) for the period of 1983 to 2005, covering a disk area between ±70° in latitude and longitude. The Standard Normal Homogeneity Test (SNHT) and two other homogeneity tests are applied with and without the use of reference SIS data (from the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) and from the ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) ERA -Interim reanalysis. The focus is on the detection of break-like inhomogeneities, which may occur due to satellite or SIS retrieval algorithm changes. In comparison with the few suitable BSRN SIS observation series with limited extension in time (no data before 1992), the CM SAF SIS time series do not show significant inhomogeneities, even though slight discrepancies in the surface measurements appear. The investigation of the full CM SAF SIS domain reveal inhomogeneities related to most of the documented satellite and retrieval changes, but only for relatively small domain fractions (especially in mountainous desert-like areas in Africa). In these regions the retrieval algorithm is not capable of adjusting for the changes of the satellite instruments. For other areas, e.g., Europe, no such breaks in the time series are found. We conclude that the CM SAF SIS data record has to be further assessed and regionally homogenized before climate trend investigations can be conducted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work summarizes the activities carried out by the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) Barcelona Expert Center (SMOS-BEC) team in conjunction with the CIALE/Universidad de Salamanca team, within the framework of the European Space Agency (ESA) CALIMAS project in preparation for the SMOS mission and during its first year of operation. Under these activities several studies were performed, ranging from Level 1 (calibration and image reconstruction) to Level 4 (land pixel disaggregation techniques, by means of data fusion with higher resolution data from optical/infrared sensors). Validation of SMOS salinity products by means of surface drifters developed ad-hoc, and soil moisture products over the REMEDHUS site (Zamora, Spain) are also presented. Results of other preparatory activities carried out to improve the performance of eventual SMOS follow-on missions are presented, including GNSS-R to infer the sea state correction needed for improved ocean salinity retrievals and land surface parameters. Results from CALIMAS show a satisfactory performance of the MIRAS instrument, the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithms implemented in the ground data processors, and explore the limits of spatial resolution of soil moisture products using data fusion, as well as the feasibility of GNSS-R techniques for sea state determination and soil moisture monitoring.
