The GaoFen-1 wide field of view (GF-1 WFV) has produced level 1 digital number data globally; however, most applications have focused on China, and data quality outside China has not been validated. This study presents a preliminary assessment of the 2020 GF-1 WFV surface reflectance data for Nepal, Azerbaijan, Kenya, and Sri Lanka along "the Belt and Road" route using Sentinel-2 Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI), Landsat-8 Operational Land Image (OLI), and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. A method for obtaining the GF-1 WFV surface reflectance data was also proposed, with steps including atmospheric correction, cross-radiation calibration, and bidirectional reflectance distribution function correction. The results showed that WFV surface reflectance data was not significantly different from MSI, OLI, and MODIS surface reflectance data. In the visible and near-infrared bands, for most landcover types, the bias was less than 0.02, and the precision and root mean square error were less than 0.04. When the landcover types were forest and water, the MSI, OLI, and MODIS surface reflectance data were higher than that of WFV in the near-infrared band. Precipitation in the Tianshan Mountains is abundant, and the quantitative estimation of precipitation in mountainous areas is important to the application and evaluation of regional water resources. With remote sensing technology, satellite inversion of precipitation can estimate precipitation in mountainous areas. However, the Tianshan Mountain terrain is complex, and the spatiotemporal variation in precipitation is large, so the accuracy of satellite precipitation inversion is not high. Here, precipitation data from around 1000 automatic weather stations in the Tianshan Mountains are used to study the correction technology of the Integrated Multisatellite Retrievals for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission's (IMERG) monthly precipitation products using stepwise regression (STEP), geographically weighted regression (GWR), and random forest (RF). First, geographic information system technology was used to extract topographic variables from a digital elevation model, and vegetation indexes, which are important precipitation indicators, were introduced as explanatory factors to correct satellite precipitation data. Second, GPM IMERG precipitation was corrected by establishing the stepwise regression, the geographically weighted regression model, and the random forest model. The three correction methods can improve the GPM IMERG in terms of relative bias, root mean square error, correlation coefficient, and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency, while the random forest method shows better corrections than the two traditional methods. For dense rainfall stations, the geographically weighted regression method is as effective as random forest. For different altitudes, the results show that RF has the best correction effect in the first three zones, but the correction effect in the last zone (over 3000 m) is worse than STEP. This study provides a practical reference method for estimating precipitation data in the non-rainfall observation area, which helps to deepen the scientific understanding of the water resource distribution in the Tianshan Mountains and provide scientific data support for regional hydrological and meteorological research. Despite the fact that point cloud registration under noisy conditions has recently begun to be tackled by several non-correspondence algorithms, they neither struggle to fuse the global features nor abandon early state estimation during the iterative alignment. To solve the problem, we propose a novel method named R-PCR (recurrent point cloud registration). R-PCR employs a lightweight cross-concatenation module and large receptive network to improve global feature performance. More importantly, it treats the point registration procedure as a high-order Markov decision process and introduces a recurrent neural network for end-to-end optimization. The experiments on indoor and outdoor benchmarks show that R-PCR outperforms state-of-the-art counterparts. The mean average error of rotation and translation of the aligned point cloud pairs are, respectively, reduced by 75% and 66% on the indoor benchmark (ScanObjectNN), and simultaneously by 50% and 37.5% on the outdoor benchmark (AirLoc). BeiDou Global Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3) provides a regional Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service, called PPP-B2b, for users in China and surrounding areas through B2b signal transmitted from its three geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites. The information broadcasted by the B2b signal include satellite orbit corrections, satellite clock offset corrections, and differential code bias (DCB) corrections of BDS-3 satellites. In this study, the accuracies of PPP-B2b corrections along with real-time PPP performance are comprehensively evaluated referenced to precise orbit and clock products from GFZ and the precise DCB products from CAS. The result indicates that the accuracy of the BDS-3 broadcast orbit is similar to that of the PPP-B2b real-time orbit. The PPP-B2b clock offset correction improved the satellite clock offset precision of the BDS-3 broadcast ephemeris. The Signal-in-Space Range Error (SISRE) of broadcast ephemeris and PPP-B2b are calculated, which are 0.536 and 1.24 m, respectively. The large SISRE value of PPP-B2b is caused by the satellite-specified systematic bias to IGS final products. The positioning performance evaluation of real-time PPP with B2b service is carried out and compared with the real-time product provided by Wuhan University (WHU) based on the eight IGS MGEX stations in China and surrounding countries. The positioning accuracy of static positioning mode with PPP-B2b service achieved centimeter-level accuracy in the selected station, and that of kinematic positioning mode achieved decimeter-level accuracy. The availability rate of PPP-B2b corrections in the surrounding area of China, however, degrades from 88.76% to 60.91% in the selected stations. The accuracy of the PPP solution using PPP-B2b correction is better than that of using WHU real-time product within China. The positioning performance of stations located at the boundary of the PPP-B2b service area, however, is affected by the number of PPP-B2b available satellites. With the rapid development in the global economy and technology, urbanization has accelerated. It is important to characterize the urban expansion and determine its driving force. In this study, we used the Xiaonan District in Hubei Province, China, as an example to map and quantify the spatiotemporal dynamics of urban expansion from the two perspectives of built-up area and urban land in 1990–2020 by using remote sensing images. The location of rivers was found to be a primary limiting factor for spatial patterns and expansion of the built-up area. The transfer of the city center and the main direction of expansion generally corresponded well to the topography, policies, and development strategies. The built-up area expanded faster than the urban population in 1995–2020, which caused a waste in land resources. The results showed that the urban expansion first decreased and then increased during the research period. The increase in the proportion of the secondary industry was the main driving force of the urban expansion. Based on the characteristics of urban expansion in the past three decades, we conclude that the urban land of Xiaonan District will expand quickly in the future and will occupy vast agricultural land. Accurate estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) over croplands on a regional scale can provide useful information for agricultural management. The hybrid ET model that combines the physical framework, namely the Penman-Monteith equation and machine learning (ML) algorithms, have proven to be effective in ET estimates. However, few studies compared the performances in estimating ET between multiple hybrid model versions using different ML algorithms. In this study, we constructed six different hybrid ET models based on six classical ML algorithms, namely the K nearest neighbor algorithm, random forest, support vector machine, extreme gradient boosting algorithm, artificial neural network (ANN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), using observed data of 17 eddy covariance flux sites of cropland over the globe. Each hybrid model was assessed to estimate ET with ten different input data combinations. In each hybrid model, the ML algorithm was used to model the stomatal conductance (Gs), and then ET was estimated using the Penman-Monteith equation, along with the ML-based Gs. The results showed that all hybrid models can reasonably reproduce ET of cropland with the models using two or more remote sensing (RS) factors. The results also showed that although including RS factors can remarkably contribute to improving ET estimates, hybrid models except for LSTM using three or more RS factors were only marginally better than those using two RS factors. We also evidenced that the ANN-based model exhibits the optimal performance among all ML-based models in modeling daily ET, as indicated by the lower root-mean-square error (RMSE, 18.67–21.23 W m−2) and higher correlations coefficient (r, 0.90–0.94). ANN are more suitable for modeling Gs as compared to other ML algorithms under investigation, being able to provide methodological support for accurate estimation of cropland ET on a regional scale. Building extraction refers to the automatic identification and separation of buildings from the background in remote sensing images. It plays a significant role in urban planning, land management, and disaster monitoring. Deep-learning methods have shown advantages in building extraction, but they still face challenges such as variations in building types, object occlusions, and complex backgrounds. To address these issues, SDSNet, a deep convolutional network that incorporates global multi-scale feature extraction and cross-level feature fusion, is proposed. SDSNet consists of three modules: semantic information extraction (SIE), multi-level merge (MLM), and semantic information fusion (SIF). The SIE module extracts contextual information and improves recognition of multi-scale buildings. The MLM module filters irrelevant details guided by high-level semantic information, aiding in the restoration of edge details for buildings. The SIF module combines filtered detail information with extracted semantic information for refined building extraction. A series of experiments conducted on two distinct public datasets for building extraction consistently demonstrate that SDSNet outperforms the state-of-the-art deep-learning models for building extraction tasks. On the WHU building dataset, the overall accuracy (OA) and intersection over union (IoU) achieved impressive scores of 98.86% and 90.17%, respectively. Meanwhile, on the Massachusetts dataset, SDSNet achieved OA and IoU scores of 94.05% and 71.6%, respectively. SDSNet exhibits a unique advantage in recovering fine details along building edges, enabling automated and intelligent building extraction. The Global Navigation Satellite System Occultation Sounder II (GNOS-II) payload onboard the Chinese Fengyun-3E (FY-3E) satellite is the world's first operational spaceborne mission that can utilize reflected signals from multiple navigation systems for Earth remote sensing. The satellite was launched into an 836-km early-morning polar orbit on 5 July 2021. Different GNSS signals show different characteristics in the observations and thus require different calibration methods. With an average data latency of less than 3 h, many near real-time applications are possible. This article first introduces the FY-3E/GNOS-II mission and instrument design, then describes the extensive calibration methods for the multi-GNSS measurements, and finally presents application results in the remote sensing of ocean surface winds, land soil moisture and sea ice extent. Especially, the ocean surface wind product has been used in operational applications such as assimilation in the numerical weather prediction model and monitoring of tropical cyclones. Currently, GNOS-II has been carried by FY-3E, FY-3F (launched in August 2023) and FY-3G (launched in April 2023). The Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a crucial vegetation parameter for climate and ecological models. Reflectance anisotropy contains valuable supplementary information for the retrieval of properties of an observed target surface. Previous studies have utilized multi-angular reflectance data and physically based Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) models with detailed vegetation structure descriptions for LAI estimation. However, the optimal selection of viewing angles for improved inversion results has received limited attention. By optimizing directional observations and integrating the PROSAIL and Ross–Li models, this study aims to enhance LAI estimation from MODIS BRDF data. A dataset of 20,000 vegetation parameter combinations was utilized to identify the directions in which the PROSAIL model exhibits higher sensitivity to LAI changes and better consistency with the Ross–Li BRDF models. The results reveal significant variations in the sensitivity of the PROSAIL model to LAI changes and its consistency with the Ross–Li model over the viewing hemisphere. In the red band, directions with high sensitivity to LAI changes and strong model consistency are mainly found at smaller solar and viewing zenith angles. In the near-infrared band, these directions are distributed at positions with larger solar and viewing zenith angles. Validation using field measurements and LAI maps demonstrates that the proposed method achieves comparable accuracy to an algorithm utilizing 397 viewing angles by utilizing reflectance data from only 30 directions. Moreover, there is a significant improvement in computational efficiency. The accuracy of LAI estimation obtained from simulated multi-angle data is relatively high for LAI values below 3.5 when compared with the MODIS LAI product from two tiles. Additionally, there is also a slight improvement in the results when the LAI exceeds 4.5. Overall, our results highlight the potential of utilizing multi-angular reflectance in specific directions for vegetation parameter inversion, showcasing the promise of this method for large-scale LAI estimation. The FengYun-3E Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) occultation sounder II (FY-3E GNOS II) was launched on 5 July 2021. For the first time, based on the new GNOS II sensor, this mission realizes radio occultation (RO) and reflectometry observations using the navigation signals from the third-generation BeiDou System (BDS-3), and it is hence important to assess and analyze the BDS-3 remote sensing performances relative to other systems. Here, we assessed FY-3E GNOS II RO atmospheric retrievals by inter-comparing with corresponding data from the NCEP FNL global atmospheric analysis and FY-3D GNOS mission. The GNOS RO data quality and consistency of the different FY-3 meteorological satellites, i.e., FY-3D and FY-3E, as well as different GNSS systems (GPS, BDS-2, BDS-3) were analyzed. We find that the FY-3E GNOS II RO data exhibit better quality than FY-3D GNOS, particularly in the number, penetration height toward surface, and global coverage by BDS RO profiles, due to the integration of BDS-2 and BDS-3. Additionally, comparing with co-located NCEP FNL analysis profiles, the mean difference (and standard deviation) of the FY-3E GNOS II RO atmospheric refractivity profile retrievals is found to be smaller than 0.2% (and 1%), in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, from 5 to 30 km, and remains consistent at this accuracy and precision level with the FY-3D GNOS RO data. Road extraction is crucial in urban planning, rescue operations, and military applications. Compared to traditional methods, using deep learning for road extraction from remote sensing images has demonstrated unique advantages. However, previous convolutional neural networks (CNN)-based road extraction methods have had limited receptivity and failed to effectively capture long-distance road features. On the other hand, transformer-based methods have good global information-capturing capabilities, but face challenges in extracting road edge information. Additionally, existing excellent road extraction methods lack validation for the Chinese region. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel road extraction model called the global–local information fusion network (GLNet). In this model, the global information extraction (GIE) module effectively integrates global contextual relationships, the local information extraction (LIE) module accurately captures road edge information, and the information fusion (IF) module combines the output features from both global and local branches to generate the final extraction results. Further, a series of experiments on two different Chinese road datasets with geographic robustness demonstrate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art deep learning models for road extraction tasks in China. On the CHN6-CUG dataset, the overall accuracy (OA) and intersection over union (IoU) reach 97.49% and 63.27%, respectively, while on the RDCME dataset, OA and IoU reach 98.73% and 84.97%, respectively. Continuous, rapid, and precise monitoring of calving events contributes to an in-depth understanding of calving mechanisms, which have the potential to cause significant mass loss from the Antarctic ice sheet. The difficulties in the precise monitoring of iceberg calving lie with the coexistence of ice shelf advances and calving. The manual location of iceberg calving is time-consuming and painstaking, while achieving precise extraction has mostly relied on the surface textural characteristics of the ice shelves and the quality of the images. Here, we propose a new and efficient method of separating the expansion and calving processes of ice shelves. We visualized the extension process by simulating a new coastline, based on the ice velocity, and detected the calved area using the simulated coastline and single-temporal post-calving images. We extensively tested the validity of this method by extracting four annual calving datasets (from August 2015 to August 2019) from the Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar mosaic of the Antarctic coastline. A total of 2032 annual Antarctic calving events were detected, with areas ranging from 0.05 km2 to 6141.0 km2, occurring on almost every Antarctic ice shelf. The extraction accuracy of the calved area depends on the positioning accuracy of the simulated coastline and the spatial resolution of the images. The positioning error of the simulated coastline is less than one pixel, and the determined minimum valid extraction area is 0.05 km2, when based on 75 m resolution images. Our method effectively avoids repetition and omission errors during the calved area extraction process. Furthermore, its efficiency is not affected by the surface textural characteristics of the calving fronts and the various changes in the frontal edge velocity, which makes it fully applicable to the rapid and accurate extraction of different calving types. The observation error covariance (R) matrix is a key component in the data assimilation (DA) process for retrieval of atmospheric state parameters (ASPs), also impacting the subsequent numerical weather forecast. However, one commonly used type of R matrix depends on instrument noise, which contravenes reality because the retrieved ASPs would depend on the instrument used. Other types of R matrix rely on the observation operator (H), analyzed state ( x a ), background error covariance (B) matrix or the background state ( x b ), and the selected forecast ensemble. All these dependences reduce the representativeness of the R matrix, since the correctness of H needs verification and no true values exist for x a or x b . As such, a better method to correctly specify the R matrix is needed. Through the physical mechanism occurring between incident radiation and particles in the atmosphere, which complies with the phenomena of energy absorption and emission, correlations among bands or channels in a detected atmospheric radiance spectrum occur. This paper thus proposes a data-derived R matrix based on a large number (N) of detected atmospheric radiance spectra constructed from N real-time measurements, where N real-time measurements can be acquired by staring at some observation location of interest during a short amount of time. This data-derived R matrix for satellite radiance observations does not rely on any assumed quantities and is unambiguous. The velocity of ice flow in the Antarctic is a crucial factor to determine ice discharge and thus future sea level rise. Feature tracking has been widely used in optical and radar imagery with fine resolution to retrieve flow parameters, although the primitive result may be contaminated by noise. In this paper, we present a series of modified post-processing steps, such as SNR thresholding by residual, complex Butterworth filters, and triple standard deviation truncation, to improve the performance of primitive results, and apply it to MODIS-based Mosaic of Antarctica (MOA) datasets. The final velocity field result displays the general flow pattern of the peripheral Antarctic. Seventy-eight out of 97 streamlines starting from seed points are smooth and continuous. The RMSE with 178 manually selected tie points is within 60 m·a−1. The systematic comparison with Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) datasets in seven drainages shows that the results regarding high magnitude and large-scale ice shelf are highly reliable; absolute mean and median difference are less than 18 m·a−1, while the result of localized drainage suffered from too much tracking error. The relative differences from manually selected and random points are controlled within 8% when speed is beyond 500 m·a−1, but bias and uncertainty are pronounced when speed is lower than that. The result through our accuracy control strategy highlights that coarse remote-sensed images such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrophotometer (MODIS) can still offer the capability for comprehensive and long-term continental ice sheet surface velocity mapping. Ship noise observation is of great significance to marine environment research and national defense security. Acoustic stealth technology makes a variety of ship noise significantly reduced, which is a new challenge for marine noise monitoring. However, there are few high spatial gain detection methods for low-noise ship monitoring. Therefore, a high Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) MEMS noise listener for ship noise detection is developed in this paper. The listener achieves considerable gain by suppressing isotropic noise in the ocean. The working principle and posterior end signal processing method of the listener are introduced in detail. A gain of 10 dB over the sound pressure detector is obtained by detecting the standard sound source. In addition, the traffic vessel noise monitoring experiment verifies that the listener can detect the ship noise. Clarifying the evolution pattern of groundwater storage (GWS) is crucial for exploring the amount of available water resources at a regional or basin scale. Currently, the groundwater resources of Northeast China have been extensively exploited, but only limited studies have assessed the extent of GWS depletion and its driving mechanisms. In this study, the groundwater storage anomaly (GWSA) in the black soil region of Northeast China was explored based on the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite combined with the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) hydrological model. The results show that from 2002 to 2021, the overall GWSA decreased (−0.4204 cm/a), and specifically, the average rates of decrease in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning Provinces were −0.2786, −0.5923, and −0.6694 cm/a, respectively, with the eastern, southern, and central parts of Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning Provinces losing seriously. Especially the GWSA deficit trend can reach −0.7471 cm/a in southern Jilin Province. The GWSA deficits in the three provinces from April to September were greater than 0.40 cm/a, while the deficit values from January to March and from October to December were less than 0.40 cm/a. This study is the first to quantitatively analyze the GWSA and its influencing factors in Northeast China for 2002–2021. The results of the study help clarify the differences in the spatial and temporal distribution of groundwater resources and their driving mechanisms in the northeastern black soil regions and provide a reference for the conservation and sustainable utilization of groundwater resources in the black soil region. Vegetation in arid central Asia (ACA) has been experiencing significant changes due to substantial warming and humidification since the 1980s. These changes are inhomogeneous due to the ecological vulnerability and topographic complexity of ACA. However, the heterogeneity of vegetation changes has received limited attention in the literature, which has focused more on the region's overall general features. Thus, this paper analyzes the regional heterogeneity of vegetation changes during the growing season in ACA and further explores their underlying drivers. The results reveal an antiphase trend of vegetation, with an increase in eastern ACA and a decrease in western ACA. This antiphase pattern is primarily constrained by the divergent hydrothermal and climatic contexts of different elevation gradients. At elevations higher than 300 m (in the eastern ACA), increased growing season precipitation dominates vegetation greening. Conversely, vegetation at elevations lower than 300 m (in western ACA) is influenced by growing season soil water, which is driven by winter precipitation (pre-growing season precipitation). Additionally, the temperature could indirectly impact vegetation trends by altering precipitation, soil water, glaciers, snow cover, and runoff. Surface reflectance anisotropy and insufficient multi-angular observations are the main challenges in albedo estimation from satellite observations. Numerous studies have been developed for albedo retrieval from a single directional reflectance by associating the anisotropy information extracted from coarse-resolution bidirectional-reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data. The contribution of land-cover type (LCT) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in distinguishing reflectance anisotropy in these methods remains controversial. This study first proposed an approach to extracting a priori BRDF (F) from the MODIS BRDF/albedo product by considering the distribution characteristics of the model parameters. LCT- and NDVI-based F were also extracted from the corresponding subset. Then, the F-based albedo was derived from simulated or satellite directional reflectance and the anisotropic information of F. Finally, the directional reflectance and F-based albedo were compared with the MODIS albedo or ground measurement, in order to show the ability of F to compensate for the effect of reflectance anisotropy in the albedo retrieval process. The method was fully validated by the global and time-series MODIS BRDF data. The results showed that reflectance anisotropy has an aggregated distribution pattern, and F can represent the reflectance anisotropy of most pixels within a tile. The improvement of LCT and NDVI only occurs when the tile contains a large area of vegetated and barren ground. With the exception of the hotspot and large viewing-zenith-angle area in the forward hemisphere, the F-based shortwave albedo has high consistency with the MODIS albedo product. A comparison with the ground measurements and MODIS albedo showed that the F-based albedo from a single directional reflectance generally achieves an absolute accuracy requirement, with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.027 and 0.036. Determining the driving climatic factors at critical periods and potential legacy effects is crucial for grassland productivity predictions on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP). However, studies with limited and ex situ ground samples from highly heterogeneous alpine meadows brought great uncertainties. This study determined the key climatic factors at critical plant developmental stages and the impact of previous plant growth status for interannual aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) variations in different QTP grassland types. We hypothesize that the impact of climatic factors on grassland productivity varies in different periods and different vegetation types, while its legacy effects are not great. Pixel-based partial least squares regression was used to associate interannual ANPP with precipitation and air temperature at different developmental stages and prior-year ANPP from 2000 to 2019 using remote sensing techniques. Results indicated different findings from previous studies. Precipitation at the reproductive stage (July–August) was the most prominent controlling factor for ANPP which was also significantly affected by precipitation and temperature at the withering (September–October) and dormant stage (November–February), respectively. The influence of precipitation was more significant in alpine meadows than in alpine steppes, while the differentiated responses to climatic factors were attributed to differences in water consumption at different developmental stages induced by leaf area changes, bud sprouting, growth, and protection from frost damage. The prior-year ANPP showed a non-significant impact on ANPP of current year, except for alpine steppes, and this impact was much less than that of current-year climatic factors, which may be attributed to the reduced annual ANPP variations related to the inter-annual carbon circulation of alpine perennial herbaceous plants and diverse root/shoot ratios in different vegetation types. The freshwater flux from icebergs into the Southern Ocean plays an important role in the global climate through its impact on the deep-water formation. Large uncertainties exist in the ice volume transported by Southern Ocean icebergs due to the sparse spatial and temporal coverage of observations, especially observations of ice thickness. The iceberg freeboard is a critical geometric parameter for measuring the thickness of an iceberg and then estimating its volume. This study developed a new, highly efficient shadow-height method to precisely measure the freeboard of various icebergs surrounded by sea ice using Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager 15-m bi-temporal panchromatic image shadows at low-solar-elevation angles. We evaluated and validated shadow length precision according to bi-temporal measurements and comparison with the measurements from the unmanned aerial vehicle. We determined freeboard precision according to shadow length precision and solar elevation angle. In our case study area, 4832 available freeboard measuring points with shadow length precision better than 2 pixels covered 376 icebergs with sizes ranging from 0.002 to 0.7 km² and with freeboard ranging from 2.3 to 83.4 m. At the solar elevation angles of 5.2°, the freeboard precision of 64.1% data could reach 1 m and 86.9% could reach 2 m. Actual evapotranspiration (ET) with high spatiotemporal resolution is very important for the research on agricultural water resource management and the water cycle processes, and it is helpful to realize precision agriculture and smart agriculture, and provides critical references for agricultural layout planning. Due to the impact of the clouds, weather environment, and the orbital period of optical satellite, there are difficulties in providing daily remote sensing data that are not contaminated by clouds for estimating daily ET with high spatial-temporal resolution. By improving the enhanced spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (ESTARFM), this manuscript proposes the method to fuse high temporal and low spatial resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model surface skin temperature (TSK) with the low temporal and high spatial resolution remote sensing surface temperature for obtaining high spatiotemporal resolution daily surface temperature to be used in the estimation of the high spatial resolution daily ET (ET_WRFHR). The distinction of this study from the previous literatures can be summarized as the novel application of the fusion of WRF-simulated TSK and remote sensing surface temperature, giving full play to the availability of model surface skin temperature data at any time and region, making up for the shortcomings of the remote sensing data, and combining the high spatial resolution of remote sensing data to obtain ET with high spatial (Landsat-like scale) and temporal (daily) resolution. The ET_WRFHR were cross-validated and quantitatively verified with MODIS ET products (MOD16) and observations (ET_Obs) from eddy covariance system. Results showed that ET_WRFHR not only better reflects the difference and dynamic evolution process of ET for different land types but also better identifies the details of various fine geographical objects. It also represented a high correlation with the ET_Obs by the R2 amount reaching 0.9186. Besides, the RMSE and BIAS between ET_WRFHR and the ET_Obs are obtained as 0.77 mm/d and −0.08 mm/d respectively. Accurate cropland classification is important for agricultural monitoring and related decision-making. The commonly used input spectral features for classification cannot be employed to effectively distinguish crops that have similar spectro-temporal features. This study attempted to improve the classification accuracy of crops using both the thermal feature, i.e., the land surface temperature (LST), and the spectral feature, i.e., the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), for classification. To amplify the temperature differences between the crops, a temperature index, namely, the modified land surface temperature index (mLSTI) was built using the LST. The mLSTI was calculated by subtracting the average LST of an image from the LST of each pixel. To study the adaptability of the proposed method to different areas, three study areas were selected. A comparison of the classification results obtained using the NDVI time series and NDVI + mLSTI time series showed that for long time series from June to November, the classification accuracy when using the mLSTI and NDVI time series was higher (85.6% for study area 1 in California, 96.3% for area 2 in Kansas, and 91.2% for area 3 in Texas) than that when using the NDVI time series alone (82.0% for area 1, 94.7% for area 2, and 90.9% for area 3); the same was true in most of the cases when using the shorter time series. With the addition of the mLSTI time series, the shorter time series achieved higher classification accuracy, which is beneficial for timely crop identification. The sorghum and soybean crops, which exhibit similar NDVI feature curves in this study, could be better distinguished by adding the mLSTI time series. The results demonstrated that the classification accuracy of crops can be improved by adding mLSTI long time series, particularly for distinguishing crops with similar NDVI characteristics in a given study area. Spatially explicit and reliable data on poverty is critical for both policy makers and researchers. However, such data remain scarce particularly in developing countries. Current research is limited in using environmental data from different sources in isolation to estimate poverty despite the fact that poverty is a complex phenomenon which cannot be quantified either theoretically or practically by one single data type. This study proposes a random forest regression (RFR) model to estimate poverty at 10 km × 10 km spatial resolution by combining features extracted from multiple data sources, including the National Polar-orbiting Partnership Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP-VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) nighttime light (NTL) data, Google satellite imagery, land cover map, road map and division headquarter location data. The household wealth index (WI) drawn from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) program was used to reflect poverty level. We trained the RFR model using data in Bangladesh and applied the model to both Bangladesh and Nepal to evaluate the model's accuracy. The results show that the R2 between the actual and estimated WI in Bangladesh is 0.70, indicating a good predictive power of our model in WI estimation. The R2 between actual and estimated WI of 0.61 in Nepal also indicates a good generalization ability of the model. Furthermore, a negative correlation is observed between the district average WI and the poverty head count ratio (HCR) in Bangladesh with the Pearson Correlation Coefficient of -0.6. Using Gini importance, we identify that proximity to urban areas is the most important variable to explain poverty which contribute to 37.9% of the explanatory power. Compared to the study that used NTL and Google satellite imagery in isolation to estimate poverty, our method increases the accuracy of estimation. Given that the data we use are globally and publicly available, the methodology reported in this study would also be applicable in other countries or regions to estimate the extent of poverty. Whereas monthly and annual nighttime light (NTL) composite datasets are being increasingly used to estimate socioeconomic status, use of the National Polar-orbiting Partnership Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP-VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) daily data has been limited for detecting and assessing the impact of short-term disastrous events. This study explores the application of daily NPP-VIIRS DNB data in assessing the impact of three types of natural disasters: earthquakes, floods, and storms. Daily DNB images one month prior to and 10 days after a disastrous event were collected and a Percent of Normal Light (PNL) image was produced as the ratio of the mean DNB radiance of the pre- and post-disaster images. Areas with a PNL value lower than one were considered as being affected by the event. The results were compared with the damaged proxy map and the flood proxy map generated using synthetic aperture radar data as well as the reported power outage rates. Our analyses show that overall NPP-VIIRS DNB daily data are useful for detecting damages and power outages caused by earthquake, storm, and flood events. Cloud coverage was identified as a major limitation in using the DNB daily data; rescue activities, traffic, and socioeconomic status of the areas also affect the use of DNB daily data in assessing the impact of natural disasters. Our findings offer new insight into the use of the daily DNB data and provide a practical guide for researchers and practitioners who may consider using such data in different situations or regions. Fengyun-3C (FY-3C) is the first Chinese satellite that is capable of using the Radio Occultation (RO) technique to retrieve atmospheric profiles. This research evaluates the quality of FY-3C RO profiles including refractivity, temperature, and specific humidity by comparing with corresponding information from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Interim Reanalysis (ERA-Interim) data over the period of 2015–2018. The evaluation is carried out by calculating and analyzing mean systematic differences between FY-3C and ERA-Interim profiles and corresponding standard deviations over a selected spatial and temporal domain. Results show that the FY-3C RO profiles are overall with good agreements with the ERA-Interim data. Global mean refractivity systematic differences are within ±0.2% from 5 to 30 km altitude range with relative standard deviations of less than 2%. Global temperature mean systematic differences vary within ±0.2 K from a 10- to 20-km altitude range with standard deviations of less than 2 K. Global mean specific humidity differences are found to be within ±0.2 g/kg from 2 to 20 km with standard deviations of less than 1 g/kg. FY-3C profiles show visible latitudinal and altitudinal variations, while the seasonal variations are minor. Sampling errors of refractivity and temperature are also found to be larger at higher latitudinal regions due to RO events being less sampled in the polar region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low accuracy and coarse spatial resolution are the two main drawbacks of satellite precipitation products. Therefore, calibration and downscaling are necessary before these products are applied. This study proposes a two-step framework to improve the accuracy of satellite precipitation estimates. The first step is data merging based on optimum interpolation (OI), and the second step is downscaling based on geographically weighted regression (GWR); therefore, the framework is called OI-GWR. An Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) (IMERG) product is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of OI-GWR in the Tianshan Mountains, China. First, the original IMERG precipitation data (OIMERG) are merged with rain gauge data using the OI method to produce corrected IMERG precipitation data (CIMERG). Then, using CIMERG as the first guess and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as the auxiliary variable, GWR is utilized for spatial downscaling. The two-step OI-GWR method is compared with several traditional methods, including GWR downscaling (Ori_GWR) and spline interpolation. The cross-validation results show that (1) the OI method noticeably improves the accuracy of OIMERG, and (2) the 1-km downscaled data obtained using OI-GWR are much better than those obtained from Ori_GWR, spline interpolation, and OIMERG. The proposed OI-GWR method can contribute to the development of high-resolution and high-accuracy regional precipitation datasets. However, it should be noted that the method proposed in this study cannot be applied in regions without any meteorological stations. With the accumulation of the ionospheric radio occultation (IRO) data observed by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) occultation sounder (GNOS) onboard FengYun-3C (FY3C) satellite, it is possible to use GNOS IRO data for ionospheric climatology research. Therefore, this work aims to validate the feasibility of FY3C/GNOS IRO products in climatology research by comparison with that of Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC), laying the foundation for its application in climatology study. Since previous verification works of FY3C/GNOS were done by comparison with ionosondes, this work matched NmF2/hmF2 of FY3C/GNOS and COSMIC into data pairs to verify the profile-level accuracy of FY3C/GNOS IRO data. The statistical results show that the overall correlation coefficients of both NmF2 and hmF2 are above 0.9, the overall bias and std of NmF2 differences between FY3C/GNOS and COSMIC are −2.19% and 17.48%, respectively, and the bias and std of hmF2 differences are −3.29 and 18.01 km, respectively, indicating a high profile-level precision consistency between FY3C/GNOS and COSMIC. In ionospheric climatology comparison, we divided NmF2/hmF2 of FY3C/GNOS into four seasons, then presented the season median NmF2/hmF2 in 5° × 10° grids and compared them with that of COSMIC. The results show that the ionospheric climatological characteristics of FY3C/GNOS and COSMIC are highly matched, both showing the typical climatological features such as equatorial ionosphere anomaly (EIA), winter anomaly, semiannual anomaly, Weddell Sea anomaly (WSA) and so on, though minor discrepancies do exist like the differences in magnitude of longitude peak structures and WSA, which verifies the reliability of FY3C/GNOS IRO products in ionospheric climatology research. Mapping landfast sea ice at a fine spatial scale is not only meaningful for geophysical study, but is also of benefit for providing information about human activities upon it. The combination of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) with structure from motion (SfM) methods have already revolutionized the current close-range Earth observation paradigm. To test their feasibility in characterizing the properties and dynamics of fast ice, three flights were carried out in the 2016–2017 austral summer during the 33rd Chinese National Antarctic Expedition (CHINARE), focusing on the area of the Prydz Bay in East Antarctica. Three-dimensional models and orthomosaics from three sorties were constructed from a total of 205 photos using Agisoft PhotoScan software. Logistical challenges presented by the terrain precluded the deployment of a dedicated ground control network; however, it was still possible to indirectly assess the performance of the photogrammetric products through an analysis of the statistics of the matching network, bundle adjustment, and Monte-Carlo simulation. Our results show that the matching networks are quite strong, given a sufficient number of feature points (mostly > 20,000) or valid matches (mostly > 1000). The largest contribution to the total error using our direct georeferencing approach is attributed to inaccuracies in the onboard position and orientation system (POS) records, especially in the vehicle height and yaw angle. On one hand, the 3D precision map reveals that planimetric precision is usually about one-third of the vertical estimate (typically 20 cm in the network centre). On the other hand, shape-only errors account for less than 5% for the X and Y dimensions and 20% for the Z dimension. To further illustrate the UAS's capability, six representative surface features are selected and interpreted by sea ice experts. Finally, we offer pragmatic suggestions and guidelines for planning future UAS-SfM surveys without the use of ground control.
