Forests are an essential part of the ecosystem and play an irreplaceable role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem and protecting biodiversity. The monitoring of forest distribution plays an important role in the conservation and management of forests. This paper analyzes and compares the performance of imagery from GF-1 WFV, Landsat 8, and Sentinel-2 satellites with respect to forest/non-forest classification tasks using the random forest algorithm (RF). The results show that in the classification task of this paper, although the differences in classification accuracy among the three satellite datasets are not remarkable, the Sentinel-2 data have the highest accuracy, GF-1 WFV the second highest, and Landsat 8 the lowest. In addition, it was found that remotely sensed data of different processing levels show little influence on the classification accuracy with respect to the forest/non-forest classification task. However, the classification accuracy of the top of the atmosphere reflectance product was the most stable, and the vegetation index has a marginal effect on the distinction between forest and non-forest areas. Protected areas (PAs) are among the main tools for preserving biodiversity and creating an environment for the natural course of ecological processes. The identification of forest biodiversity is especially important for large metropolitan areas. An obvious problem in assessing the efficiency of the PAs network is the lack of up-to-date cartographic materials representing the typological diversity of vegetation. The aim of the paper is to identify forest biodiversity and fragmentation in the example of the Moscow region (MR)—the largest metropolis in Eastern Europe. The typological classification was carried out at a detailed hierarchical level—33 association groups (ass. gr.) considering the diversity of the land cover. A random forest algorithm was used for cartographic mapping (overall accuracy 0.59). Remote sensing (RS) data included Sentinel-2A, DEM SRTM, and PALSAR radar images. Six fragmentation metrics were calculated based on the raster map of forest typological diversity. A significant correlation between the forest diversity and PAs forest patch fragmentation metrics was noted. It has been established that the PAs proportion of the territory accounts for almost 20% only within the northernmost district and noticeably decreases to the south to 1–2%. At the same time, fragmentation noticeably increases from Northeast to Southwest. The category of PAs does not affect the state of the forest cover. Additionally, there was no direct influence of the anthropogenic factor from both local sources and a large regional source, i.e., the city of Moscow. It is shown that the average area of PAs, supporting 75% of the typological diversity of regional communities, was about 1000 ha. The results of the study suggest that there is a general lack of environmental protection measures in the region. It is recommended to increase the area of PAs, primarily for less fragmented forest patches, including indigenous forest-steppe and forest types of communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mapping of tropical rainforest forest structure parameters plays an important role in biodiversity and carbon stock estimation. The current mechanism models based on PolInSAR for forest height inversion (e.g., the RVoG model) are physical process models, and realistic conditions for model parameterization are often difficult to establish for practical applications, resulting in large forest height estimation errors. As an alternative, machine learning approaches offer the benefit of model simplicity, but these tools provide limited capabilities for interpretation and generalization. To explore the forest height estimation method combining the mechanism model and the empirical model, we utilized UAVSAR multi-baseline PolInSAR L-band data from the AfriSAR project and propose a solution of a mechanism model combined with machine learning. In this paper, two mechanism models were used as controls, the RVoG three-phase method and the RVoG phase-coherence amplitude method. The vertical structure parameters of the forest obtained from the mechanism model were used as the independent variables of the machine learning model. Random forest (RF) and partial least squares (PLS) regression models were used to invert the forest canopy height. Results show that the inversion accuracy of the machine learning method, combined with the mechanism model, is significantly better than that of the single-mechanism model method. The most influential independent variables were penetration depth, volume coherence phase center height, coherence separation, and baseline selection. With the precondition that the cumulative contribution of the independent variables was greater than 90%, the number of independent variables in the two study areas was reduced from 19 to 4, and the accuracy of the RF-RVoG-DEP model was higher than that of the PLS-RVoG-DEP model. For the Lope test area, the R2 of the RVoG phase coherence amplitude method is 0.723, the RMSE is 8.583 m, and the model bias is −2.431 m; the R2 of the RVoG three-stage method is 0.775, the RMSE is 7.748, and the bias is 1.120 m, the R2 of the PLS-RVoG-DEP model is 0.850, the RMSE is 6.320 m, and the bias is 0.002 m; and the R2 of the RF-RVoG-DEP model is 0.900, the RMSE is 5.154 m, and the bias is −0.061 m. The results for the Pongara test area are consistent with the pattern for the Lope test area. The accurate large-scale classification of tree species is crucial for the monitoring, protection, and management of the Earth's invaluable forest ecosystems. Numerous previous studies have recognized the suitability of satellite imagery, particularly Sentinel-2 imagery, for this task. In this study, we utilized a dense phenology Sentinel-2 time series, which offered consistent data across multiple granules, to map tree species across the entire forested area in Austria. Aiming for the classification scheme to more accurately represent actual forest conditions, we included mixed tree species and sparsely populated classes (classes with sparse canopy cover) alongside pure tree species classes. To enhance the training data for the mixed and sparse classes, synthetic data creation was employed. Autocorrelation has significant implications for the validation of thematic maps. To investigate the impact of spatial dependency on validation data, two methods were employed at numerous split and buffer distances: spatial split validation and a validation method based on a buffered ground reference probability samples provided by the National Forest inventory (NFI). While a random training data holdout set yielded 99% accuracy, the spatial split validation resulted in 74% accuracy, emphasizing the importance of accounting for spatial autocorrelation when validating with holdout sets derived from polygon-based training data. The validation based on NFI data resulted in 55% overall accuracy, 91% post-hoc pure class accuracy, and 79% accuracy when confusions in phenological proximity were disregarded (e.g., spruce–larch confused with spruce). The significant differences in accuracy observed between spatial split and NFI validation underscore the challenge for polygon-based training data to capture ground reference forest complexity, particularly in areas with diverse forests. This hardship is further accentuated by the pure class accuracy of 91%, revealing the substantial impact of mixed stands on the accuracy of tree species maps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban trees and forests provide multiple ecosystem services (ES), including temperature regulation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity. Interest in ES has increased amongst policymakers, scientists, and citizens given the extent and growth of urbanized areas globally. However, the methods and techniques used to properly assess biodiversity and ES provided by vegetation in urban environments, at large scales, are insufficient. Individual tree identification and characterization are some of the most critical issues used to evaluate urban biodiversity and ES, given the complex spatial distribution of vegetation in urban areas and the scarcity or complete lack of systematized urban tree inventories at large scales, e.g., at the regional or national levels. This often limits our knowledge on their contributions toward shaping biodiversity and ES in urban areas worldwide. This paper provides an analysis of the state-of-the-art studies and was carried out based on a systematic review of 48 scientific papers published during the last five years (2016–2020), related to urban tree and greenery characterization, remote sensing techniques for tree identification, processing methods, and data analysis to classify and segment trees. In particular, we focused on urban tree and forest characterization using remotely sensed data and identified frontiers in scientific knowledge that may be expanded with new developments in the near future. We found advantages and limitations associated with both data sources and processing methods, from which we drew recommendations for further development of tree inventory and characterization in urban forestry science. While protected areas (PAs) are an important conservation strategy to protect vulnerable ecosystems and species, recent analyses question their effectiveness in curbing deforestation and maintaining landscape connectivity. The spatial arrangement of forests inside and outside of PAs may affect ecosystem functioning and wildlife movement. The Osa Peninsula—and Costa Rica in general—are unique conservation case studies due to their high biodiversity, extensive PA network, environmental policies, and payment for ecosystem services (PES) programs. This study explores the relationship between forest management initiatives—specifically PAs, the 1996 Forest Law, and PES—and forest cover and landscape metrics in the Osa Conservation Area (ACOSA). The Google Earth Engine API was used to process Surface Reflectance Tier 1 Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager data for 1987, 1998, and 2019, years with relatively cloud-free satellite imagery. Land use/land cover (LULC) maps were generated with the pixel-based random forest machine learning algorithm, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and functional landscape metrics were calculated. The LULC maps are the first to track land use change, from 1987 to 2019 and the first to separately classify mature and secondary forest in the region, and have already proven useful for conservation efforts. The results suggest that forest cover, NDVI, EVI, and structural connectivity increased from 1987 to 2019 across the study area, both within and surrounding the PAs, suggesting minimal deforestation encroachment and local leakage. These changes may have contributed to the increasing vertebrate abundance observed in the region. PAs, especially national parks with stricter conservation regulations, displayed the highest forest cover and connectivity. Forest cover increased in properties receiving PES payments. Following the Forest Law's 1996 deforestation ban, both forest conversion and reforestation rates decreased, suggesting the law curbed deforestation but did not drive reforestation across the region. Connectivity outside of PAs slightly declined following the adoption of the law, so the subsequent forest growth likely occurred in mostly previously unforested areas. Forest expansion alone does not ensure connectivity. We highlight the importance of developing policies, PES programs, and monitoring systems that emphasize conserving and restoring large, connected forest patches for biodiversity conservation and landscape resilience. Resumen: Aunque las áreas protegidas (APs) son una importante estrategia de conservación para proteger ecosistemas y especies vulnerables, algunos análisis recientes cuestionan su eficacia para frenar la deforestación y mantener la conectividad del paisaje. La distribución espacial de los bosques dentro y fuera de las AP puede afectar el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas y los movimientos de la fauna. La Península de Osa–y Costa Rica en general–constituyen casos de estudio únicos de conservación debido a su elevada biodiversidad, su extensa red de AP, sus políticas medioambientales y sus programas de Pago por Servicios Ambientales (PSA). Este estudio explora la relación entre APs, la Ley Forestal de 1996, PSA, cobertura y métricas del paisaje en el Área de Conservación Osa (ACOSA). Se utilizó la plataforma Google Earth Engine API para procesar datos de Reflectancia Superficial Tier 1 Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper y Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager para 1987, 1998 y 2019, años con imágenes satelitales relativamente libres de nubes. Se generaron mapas de uso del suelo con el algoritmo de aprendizaje automático basado en pixeles Random Forest, y se calcularon el índice de vegetación de diferencia normalizada (NDVI), el índice de vegetación mejorado (EVI) y las métricas de paisaje funcionales. Estos mapas, los primeros en clasificar por separado los bosques maduros y secundarios de la región, han demostrado su utilidad para los esfuerzos de conservación. Los resultados sugieren que la cobertura forestal, el NDVI, el EVI y la conectividad estructural aumentaron entre 1987 y 2019 en toda la región de estudio, tanto dentro de las AP como en sus alrededores, lo que sugiere una expansión mínima de la deforestación dentro y fuera de las AP. Estos cambios pueden haber contribuido al aumento de la abundancia de vertebrados observado en la región. Las AP, especialmente los parques nacionales con regulaciones de conservación más estrictas, mostraron la mayor cobertura forestal y conectividad. Remote sensing provides a consistent form of observation for biodiversity monitoring across space and time. However, the regional mapping of forest species diversity is still difficult because of the complexity of species distribution and overlapping tree crowns. A new method called "spectranomics" that maps forest species richness based on leaf chemical and spectroscopic traits using imaging spectroscopy was developed by Asner and Martin. In this paper, we use this method to detect the relationships among the spectral, biochemical and taxonomic diversity of tree species, based on 20 dominant canopy species collected in a subtropical forest study site in China. Eight biochemical components (chlorophyll, carotenoid, specific leaf area, equivalent water thickness, nitrogen, phosphorus, cellulose and lignin) are quantified by spectral signatures (R² = 0.57-0.85, p < 0.01). We also find that the simulated maximum species number based on the eight optimal biochemical components is approximately 15, which is suitable for most 30 m × 30 m forest sites within this study area. Deforestation is a threat to habitat quality and biodiversity. In intact forests, even small levels of deforestation can have profound consequences for vertebrate biodiversity. The risk hotspots are Borneo, the Central Amazon, and the Congo Basin. Earth observation (EO) now provides regular, high-resolution satellite images from the Copernicus Sentinel missions and other platforms. To assess the impact of forest conversion and forest loss on biodiversity and habitat quality, forest loss in a tiger conservation landscape in Malaysia is analysed using Sentinel-2 imagery and the InVEST habitat quality model. Forest losses are identified from satellites using the random forest classification and validated with PlanetScope imagery at 3–5 m resolution for a test area. Two scenarios are simulated using InVEST, one with and one without the forest loss maps. The outputs of the InVEST model are maps of tiger habitat quality and habitat degradation in northeast Peninsular Malaysia. In addition to forest loss, OpenStreetMap road vectors and the GLC2000 land-cover map are used to model habitat sensitivity to threats from roads, railways, water bodies, and urban areas. The landscape biodiversity score simulation results fall sharply from ~0.8 to ~0.2 for tree-covered land cover when forest loss is included in the habitat quality model. InVEST makes a reasonable assumption that species richness is higher in pristine tropical forests than in agricultural landscapes. The landscape biodiversity score is used to compare habitat quality between administrative areas. The coupled EO/InVEST modelling framework presented here can support decision makers in reaching the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Forest loss information is essential for the quantification of habitat quality and biodiversity in tropical forests. Automatic, efficient, and accurate individual tree species identification and crown parameters extraction is of great significance for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem function assessment. UAV multispectral data have the advantage of low cost and easy access, and hyperspectral data can finely characterize spatial and spectral features. As such, they have attracted extensive attention in the field of forest resource investigation, but their applicability for end-to-end individual tree species identification is unclear. Based on the Mask R-CNN instance segmentation model, this study utilized UAV hyperspectral images to generate spectral thinning data, spectral dimensionality reduction data, and simulated multispectral data, thereby evaluating the importance of high-resolution spectral information, the effectiveness of PCA dimensionality reduction processing of hyperspectral data, and the feasibility of multispectral data for individual tree identification. The results showed that the individual tree species identification accuracy of spectral thinning data was positively correlated with the number of bands, and full-band hyperspectral data were better than other hyperspectral thinning data and PCA dimensionality reduction data, with Precision, Recall, and F1-score of 0.785, 0.825, and 0.802, respectively. The simulated multispectral data are also effective in identifying individual tree species, among which the best result is realized through the combination of Green, Red, and NIR bands, with Precision, Recall, and F1-score of 0.797, 0.836, and 0.814, respectively. Furthermore, by using Green–Red–NIR data as input, the tree crown area and width are predicted with an RMSE of 3.16m2 and 0.51m, respectively, along with an rRMSE of 0.26 and 0.12. This study indicates that the Mask R-CNN model with UAV optical images is a novel solution for identifying individual tree species and extracting crown parameters, which can provide practical technical support for sustainable forest management and ecological diversity monitoring. Plant diversity is an important parameter in maintaining forest ecosystem services, functions and stability. Timely and accurate monitoring and evaluation of large-area wall-to-wall maps on plant diversity and its spatial heterogeneity are crucial for the conservation and management of forest resources. However, traditional botanical field surveys designed to estimate plant diversity are usually limited in their spatiotemporal resolutions. Using Sentinel-1 (S-1) and Sentinel-2 (S-2) data at high spatiotemporal scales, combined with and referenced to botanical field surveys, may be the best choice to provide accurate plant diversity distribution information over a large area. In this paper, we predicted and mapped plant diversity in a subtropical forest using 24 months of freely and openly available S-1 and S-2 images (10 m × 10 m) data over a large study area (15,290 km2). A total of 448 quadrats (10 m × 10 m) of forestry field surveys were captured in a subtropical evergreen-deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest to validate a machine learning algorithm. The objective was to link the fine Sentinel spectral and radar data to several ground-truthing plant diversity indices in the forests. The results showed that: (1) The Simpson and Shannon-Wiener diversity indices were the best predicted indices using random forest regression, with ȓ2 of around 0.65; (2) The use of S-1 radar data can enhance the accuracy of the predicted heterogeneity indices in the forests by approximately 0.2; (3) As for the mapping of Simpson and Shannon-Wiener, the overall accuracy was 67.4% and 64.2% respectively, while the texture diversity's overall accuracy was merely 56.8%; (4) From the evaluation and prediction map information, the Simpson, Shannon-Wiener and texture diversity values (and its confidence interval values) indicate spatial heterogeneity in pixel level. The large-area forest plant diversity indices maps add spatially explicit information to the ground-truthing data. Based on the results, we conclude that using the time-series of S-1 and S-2 radar and spectral characteristics, when coupled with limited ground-truthing data, can provide reasonable assessments of plant spatial heterogeneity and diversity across wide areas. This paper focuses on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) data availability over the 2 million km2 Cerrado, the Brazilian central savanna biome and one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Overall, about 2.5 million laser shots, distributed along the seven years of ICESat operation (2003-2009) and comprising three major seasonal domains, were acquired, from which, 206,026 and 176,035 screened footprints are coincident with the remnant vegetation and cultivated pasture areas (the dominant land-use form in the Cerrado). Although these points are well distributed over the entire Cerrado, the ICESat track data collection results in substantial data gaps. In relation to the 15,612 Cerrado watersheds (6th order Otto basin system), 8,369 and 4,415 watersheds are completely deprived of data points over their remnant vegetation and pasture covers, respectively. Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) availability was also evaluated in relation to specific targets of interest, including both fully-protected conservation units as well as areas impacted by fire and deforestation. In spite of the very few occurrences, our assessments indicate that enough LIDAR data is available for retrieving structural and functional properties of a variety of Cerrado physiognomies, as well as to assess how these physiognomies respond to anthropogenic induced changes. In fact, the comprehensive data availability analysis conducted in this study corroborate the potential of GLAS LIDAR waveforms for the retrieval of biophysical properties at both local and regional scales, particularly concerning remnant carbon stocks and pasture conditions, key information for the conservation of the fast-changing and severely threatened Cerrado. The Puuc Biocultural State Reserve (PBSR) is a unique model for tropical dry forest conservation in Mexico. Preserving forest biodiversity and carbon within the PBSR depends on maintaining low-impact productive activities coordinated by multiple communal and private landowners. In this study, we used state-of-the-art remote sensing data to investigate past spatial patterns in forest clearing dynamics and their relation to forest carbon density and forest plant species richness and diversity in the context of the forest conservation goals of the PBSR. We used a Landsat-based continuous change detection product for the 2000–2021 period and compared it to carbon density and tree species richness models generated from ALOS-2 PALSAR 2 imagery and national scale forest inventory data. The estimated error-adjusted area of detected annual forest clearings from the year 2000 until the year 2021 was 230,511 ha in total (±19,979 ha). The analysis of annual forest clearing frequency and area suggests that although forest clearing was significantly more intensive outside of the PBSR than within the PBSR during the entire 2000–2021 period, there is no evidence suggesting that the frequency and magnitude of forest clearing changed over the years after the creation of the PBSR in 2011. However, an emergent hotspot analysis shows that high spatiotemporal clustering of forest clearing events (hotspots) during the 2012–2021 period was less common than prior to 2011, and these more recent hotspots have been confined to areas outside the PBSR. After comparing forest clearing events to carbon density and tree species richness models, the results show that landowners outside the PBSR often clear forests with lower carbon density and species diversity than those inside the PBSR. This suggests that, compared to landowners outside the PBSR, landowners within the PBSR might be practicing longer fallow periods allowing forests to attain higher carbon density and tree species richness and hence better soil nutrient recovery after land abandonment. In conclusion, our results show that the PBSR effectively acted as a stabilizing forest management scheme during the 2012–2021 period, minimizing the impact of productive activities by lowering the frequency of forest clearing events and preserving late secondary forests within the PBSR. We recommend continuing efforts to provide alternative optimal field data collection strategies and modeling techniques to spatially predict key tropical forest attributes. Combining these models with continuous change detection datasets will allow for underlying ecological processes to be revealed and the generation of information better adapted to forest governance scales. The special issue "Tree species diversity mapping" presents research focused on the remote assessment of tree species diversity, using different sensor modalities and platforms. The special issue thereby recognizes that the continued loss of biodiversity poses a great challenge to humanity. Precise and regularly updated baseline information is urgently needed, which is difficult, using field inventories, especially on a large scale. On such scales, remote sensing methods excel. The work presented in the special issue demonstrates the great potential of Earth Observation (EO) for addressing knowledge gaps, as EO provides rich (spectral) information at high revisit frequencies and spatial resolutions. Many tree species can be distinguished well using optical data, in particular, when simultaneously leveraging both the spectral and temporal dimensions. A combination with other sensor modalities can further improve performance. EO approaches are, however, limited by the availability of high-quality reference information. This complicates the task as the collection of field data is labor and time-consuming. To mitigate this limiting factor, resources should be better shared amongst the community. The reliance on in situ data also highlights the need to focus research on the extraction of more permanent (i.e., species-inherent) properties. In this respect, we identify and discuss some inherent limitations of current approaches regarding tree species discrimination. To this end, we offer a more fundamental view on tree species classification based on physical principles. To provide both a summary of the special issue and some stimulating thoughts about possible future research directions, we structured the present communication into four parts. We first introduce the need for biodiversity information, followed by a summary of all 19 articles published within the special issue. The articles are ordered by the number of species investigated. Next, we provide a short summary of the main outputs. To stimulate further research and discussion within the scientific community, we conclude this communication by offering a more fundamental view on tree species classification based on EO data and its biophysical foundations. In particular, we purport that species can possibly be more robustly identified if we classify/identify them in the biophysical feature space and not in the spectral-temporal feature space. This involves the creation and inversion of so-called physically-based radiative transfer models (RTM), which take hyper/multispectral observations together with their observation geometry (as well as other priors), and project these into biophysical variables such as chlorophyll content and LAI etc. The perceived advantage of such an approach is that the generalizability (and scalability) of EO based classifications will increase, as the temporal trajectory of species in the biophysical parameter space is probably more robust compared to the sole analysis of spectral data, which—amongst other perturbing factors—also depend on site/time specific illumination geometry. With the acceleration of global warming, research on forests has become important. Vertical forest structure is an indicator of forest vitality and diversity. Therefore, further studies are essential. The investigation of forest structures has traditionally been conducted through in situ surveys, which require substantial time and money. To overcome these drawbacks, in our previous study, vertical forest structure was mapped through machine learning techniques and multi-seasonal remote sensing data, and the classification performance was improved to a 0.92 F1-score. However, the use of multi-seasonal images includes tree location errors owing to changes in the timing and location of acquisition between images. This error can be reduced by using a modified U-Net model that generates a low-resolution output map from high-resolution input data. Therefore, we mapped vertical forest structures from a multi-seasonal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) optic and LiDAR data using three modified U-Net models to improve mapping performance. Spectral index maps related to forests were calculated as optic images, and canopy height maps were produced using the LiDAR-derived digital surface model (DSM) and digital terrain model (DTM). Spectral index maps and filtered canopy height maps were then used as input data and applied to the following three models: (1) a model that modified only the structure of the decoder, (2) a model that modified both the structure of the encoder and decoder, and (3) a model that modified the encoder, decoder, and the part that concatenated the encoder and decoder. Model 1 had the best performance with an F1-score of 0.97. The F1-score value was higher than 0.9 for both Model 2 and Model 3. Accurate information on dominant tree species and their spatial distribution in subtropical natural forests are key ecological monitoring factors for accurately characterizing forest biodiversity, depicting the tree competition mechanism and quantitatively evaluating forest ecosystem stability. In this study, the subtropical natural forest in northwest Yunnan province of China was selected as the study area. Firstly, an object-oriented multi-resolution segmentation (MRS) algorithm was used to segment individual tree crowns from the UAV RGB imagery and satellite multispectral imagery in the forests with different densities (low (547 n/ha), middle (753 n/ha) and high (1040 n/ha)), and parameters of the MRS algorithm were tested and optimized for accurately extracting the tree crown and position information of the individual tree. Secondly, the texture metrics of the UAV RGB imagery and the spectral metrics of the satellite multispectral imagery within the individual tree crown were extracted, and the random forest algorithm and three deep learning networks constructed in this study were utilized to classify the five dominant tree species. Finally, we compared and evaluated the performance of the random forest algorithm and three deep learning networks for dominant tree species classification using the field measurement data, and the influence of the number of training samples on the accuracy of dominant tree species classification using deep learning networks was investigated. The results showed that: (1) Stand density had little influence on individual tree segmentation using the object-oriented MRS algorithm. In the forests with different stand densities, the F1 score of individual tree segmentation based on satellite multispectral imagery was 71.3–74.7%, and that based on UAV high-resolution RGB imagery was 75.4–79.2%. (2) The overall accuracy of dominant tree species classification using the light-weight network MobileNetV2 (OA = 71.11–82.22%), residual network ResNet34 (OA = 78.89–91.11%) and dense network DenseNet121 (OA = 81.11–94.44%) was higher than that of the random forest algorithm (OA = 60.00–64.44%), among which DenseNet121 had the highest overall accuracy. Texture metrics improved the overall accuracy of dominant tree species classification. In the light of the "Biological Diversity" concept, habitats are cardinal pieces for biodiversity quantitative estimation at a local and global scale. In Europe EUNIS (European Nature Information System) is a system tool for habitat identification and assessment. Earth Observation (EO) data, which are acquired by satellite sensors, offer new opportunities for environmental sciences and they are revolutionizing the methodologies applied. These are providing unprecedented insights for habitat monitoring and for evaluating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators. This paper shows the results of a novel approach for a spatially explicit habitat mapping in Italy at a national scale, using a supervised machine learning model (SMLM), through the combination of vegetation plot database (as response variable), and both spectral and environmental predictors. The procedure integrates forest habitat data in Italy from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA), with Sentinel-2 imagery processing (vegetation indices time series, spectral indices, and single bands spectral signals) and environmental data variables (i.e., climatic and topographic), to parameterize a Random Forests (RF) classifier. The obtained results classify 24 forest habitats according to the EUNIS III level: 12 broadleaved deciduous (T1), 4 broadleaved evergreen (T2) and eight needleleaved forest habitats (T3), and achieved an overall accuracy of 87% at the EUNIS II level classes (T1, T2, T3), and an overall accuracy of 76.14% at the EUNIS III level. The highest overall accuracy value was obtained for the broadleaved evergreen forest equal to 91%, followed by 76% and 68% for needleleaved and broadleaved deciduous habitat forests, respectively. The results of the proposed methodology open the way to increase the EUNIS habitat categories to be mapped together with their geographical extent, and to test different semi-supervised machine learning algorithms and ensemble modelling methods. The biodiversity loss in Southeast Asia indicates an urgent need for long-term monitoring, which is lacking. Much attention is being directed toward bird diversity monitoring using remote sensing, based on relation to forest structure. However, few studies have utilized space-borne active microwave remote sensing, which has considerable advantages in terms of repetitive observations over tropical areas. Here, we evaluate threatened bird occurrence from L-band satellite data explaining forest structure in Sumatra, Indonesia. First, we identified L-band parameters with strong correlations with the forest layer structure, defined as forest floor, understory, and canopy layers. Then, we analyzed the correlation between threatened bird occurrence and L-band parameters identified as explaining forest structure. The results reveal that several parameters can represent the layers of forest floor, understory, and canopy. Subsequent statistical analysis elucidated that forest-dependent and threatened bird species exhibit significant positive correlations with the selected L-band parameters explaining forest floor and understory. Our results highlight the potential of applying microwave satellite remote sensing to evaluate bird diversity through forest structure estimation, although a more comprehensive study is needed to strengthen our findings. Europe's mountain forests, which are naturally valuable areas due to their high biodiversity and well-preserved natural characteristics, are experiencing major alterations, so an important component of monitoring is obtaining up-to-date information concerning species composition, extent, and location. An important aspect of mapping tree stands is the selection of remote sensing data that vary in temporal, spectral, and spatial resolution, as well as in open and commercial access. For the Tatra Mountains area, which is a unique alpine ecosystem in central Europe, we classified 13 woody species by iterative machine learning methods using random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms of more than 1000 polygons collected in the field. For this task, we used free Sentinel-2 multitemporal satellite data (10 m pixel size, 12 spectral bands, and 21 acquisition dates), commercial PlanetScope data (3 m pixel size, 8 spectral bands, and 3 acquisitions dates), and airborne HySpex hyperspectral data (2 m pixel size, 430 spectral bands, and a single acquisition) with fusion of the data of topographic derivatives based on Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. The iterative classification method achieved the highest F1-score with HySpex (0.95 RF; 0.92 SVM) imagery, but the multitemporal Sentinel-2 data cube, which consisted of 21 scenes, offered comparable results (0.93 RF; 0.89 SVM). The retention of structural elements such as habitat trees in forests managed for timber production is essential for fulfilling the objectives of biodiversity conservation. This paper seeks to predict tree-related microhabitats (TreMs) by close-range remote sensing parameters. TreMs, such as cavities or crown deadwood, are an established tool to quantify the suitability of habitat trees for biodiversity conservation. The aim to predict TreMs based on remote sensing (RS) parameters is supposed to assist a more objective and efficient selection of retention elements. The RS parameters were collected by the use of terrestrial laser scanning as well as unmanned aerial vehicles structure from motion point cloud generation to provide a 3D distribution of plant tissue. Data was recorded on 135 1-ha plots in Germany. Statistical models were used to test the influence of 28 RS predictors, which described TreM richness (R2: 0.31) and abundance (R2: 0.31) in moderate precision and described a deviance of 44% for the abundance and 38% for richness of TreMs. Our results indicate that multiple RS techniques can achieve moderate predictions of TreM occurrence. This method allows a more efficient and objective selection of retention elements such as habitat trees that are keystone features for biodiversity conservation, even if it cannot be considered a full replacement of TreM inventories due to the moderate statistical relationship at this stage. Efforts to assess and understand changes in plant diversity and ecosystem functioning focus on the analysis of taxonomic diversity. However, the resilience of ecosystems depends not only on species richness but also on the functions (responses and effects) of species within communities and ecosystems. Therefore, a functional approach is required to estimate functional diversity through functional traits and to model its changes in space and time. This study aims to: (i) assess the accuracy of estimates of species richness and tree functional richness obtained from field data and Sentinel-2 imagery in tropical dry forests of the Yucatan Peninsula; (ii) map and analyze the relationships between these two variables. We calculated species richness and functional richness (from six functional traits) of trees from 87 plots of the National Forest Inventory in a semi-deciduous tropical forest and 107 in a semi-evergreen tropical forest. Species richness and functional richness were mapped using reflectance values, vegetation indices, and texture measurements from Sentinel-2 imagery as explanatory variables. Validation of the models to map these two variables yielded a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.43 and 0.50, and a mean squared relative error of 25.4% and 48.8%, for tree species richness and functional richness, respectively. For both response variables, the most important explanatory variables were Sentinel-2 texture measurements and spectral bands. Tree species richness and functional richness were positively correlated in both forest types. Bivariate maps showed that 44.9% and 26.5% of the forests studied had high species richness and functional richness values. Our findings highlight the importance of integrating field data and remotely sensed variables for estimating tree species richness and functional richness. In addition, the combination of species richness and functional richness maps presented here is potentially valuable for planning, conservation, and restoration strategies by identifying areas that maximize ecosystem service provisioning, carbon storage, and biodiversity conservation. Forests are essential for global environmental well-being because of their rich provision of ecosystem services and regulating factors. Global forests are under increasing pressure from climate change, resource extraction, and anthropologically-driven disturbances. The results are dramatic losses of habitats accompanied with the reduction of species diversity. There is the urgent need for forest biodiversity monitoring comprising analysis on α , β , and γ scale to identify hotspots of biodiversity. Remote sensing enables large-scale monitoring at multiple spatial and temporal resolutions. Concepts of remotely sensed spectral diversity have been identified as promising methodologies for the consistent and multi-temporal analysis of forest biodiversity. This review provides a first time focus on the three spectral diversity concepts "vegetation indices", "spectral information content", and "spectral species" for forest biodiversity monitoring based on airborne and spaceborne remote sensing. In addition, the reviewed articles are analyzed regarding the spatiotemporal distribution, remote sensing sensors, temporal scales and thematic foci. We identify multispectral sensors as primary data source which underlines the focus on optical diversity as a proxy for forest biodiversity. Moreover, there is a general conceptual focus on the analysis of spectral information content. In recent years, the spectral species concept has raised attention and has been applied to Sentinel-2 and MODIS data for the analysis from local spectral species to global spectral communities. Airborne lidar has been widely used for forest characterization to facilitate forest ecological and management studies. With the availability of increasingly higher point density, individual tree delineation (ITD) from airborne lidar point clouds has become a popular yet challenging topic, due to the complexity and diversity of forests. One important step of ITD is segmentation, for which various methodologies have been studied. Among them, a long proven image segmentation method, mean shift, has been applied directly onto 3D points, and has shown promising results. However, there are variations among those who implemented the algorithm in terms of the kernel shape, adaptiveness and weighting. This paper provides a detailed assessment of the mean shift algorithm for the segmentation of airborne lidar data, and the effect of crown top detection upon the validation of segmentation results. The results from three different datasets revealed that a crown-shaped kernel consistently generates better results (up to 7 percent) than other variants, whereas weighting and adaptiveness do not warrant improvements. Forest fungi provide recreational and economic services, as well as ecosystem biodiversity. Wild mushroom yields are difficult to estimate; climatic conditions are known to trigger temporally localised yields, and forest structure also affects productivity. In this work, we analyse the capacity of remotely sensed variables to estimate wild mushroom biomass production in Mediterranean Pinus pinaster forests in Soria (Spain) using generalised additive mixed models (GAMMs). In addition to climate variables, multitemporal NDVI derived from Landsat data, as well as structural variables measured with mobile Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), are considered. Models are built for all mushroom species as a single pool and for Lactarius deliciosus individually. Our results show that, in addition to autumn precipitation, the interaction of multitemporal NDVI and vegetation biomass are most explanatory of mushroom productivity in the models. When analysing the productivity models of Lactarius deliciosus, in addition to the interaction between canopy cover and autumn minimum temperature, basal area (BA) becomes relevant, indicating an optimal BA range for the development of this species. Information on tree species and changes in forest composition is necessary to understand species-specific responses to change, and to develop conservation strategies. Remote sensing methods have been increasingly used for tree detection and species classification. In mixed species forests, conventional tree detection methods developed with assumptions about uniform tree canopy structure often fail. The main aim of this study is to identify effective methods for tree delineation and species classification in an Australian native forest. Tree canopies were delineated at three different spatial scales of analysis: (i) superpixels representing small elements in the tree canopy, (ii) tree canopy objects generated using a conventional segmentation technique, multiresolution segmentation (MRS), and (iii) individual tree bounding boxes detected using deep learning based on the DeepForest open-source algorithm. Combinations of spectral, texture, and structural measures were tested to assess features relevant for species classification using RandomForest. The highest overall classification accuracies were achieved at the superpixel scale (0.84 with all classes and 0.93 with Eucalyptus classes grouped). The highest accuracies at the individual tree bounding box and object scales were similar (0.77 with Eucalyptus classes grouped), highlighting the potential of tree detection using DeepForest, which uses only RGB, compared to site-specific tuning with MRS using additional layers. This study demonstrates the broad applicability of DeepForest and superpixel approaches for tree delineation and species classification. Remotely sensed morphological traits have been used to assess functional diversity of forests. This approach is potentially spatial-scale-independent. Lidar data collected from the ground or by drone at a high point density provide an opportunity to consider multiple ecologically meaningful traits at fine-scale ecological units such as individual trees. However, high-spatial-resolution and multi-trait datasets used to calculate functional diversity can produce large volumes of data that can be computationally resource demanding. Functional diversity can be derived through a trait probability density (TPD) approach. Computing TPD in a high-dimensional trait space is computationally intensive. Reductions of the number of dimensions through trait selection and principal component analysis (PCA) may reduce the computational load. Trait selection can facilitate identification of ecologically meaningful traits and reduce inter-trait correlation. This study investigates whether kernel density estimator (KDE) or one-class support vector machine (SVM) may be computationally more efficient in calculating TPD. Four traits were selected for input into the TPD: canopy height, effective number of layers, plant to ground ratio, and box dimensions. When simulating a high-dimensional trait space, we found that TPD derived from KDE was more efficient than using SVM when the number of input traits was high. For five or more traits, applying dimension reduction techniques (e.g., PCA) are recommended. Furthermore, the kernel size for TPD needs to be appropriate for the ecological target unit and should be appropriate for the number of traits. The kernel size determines the required number of data points within the trait space. Therefore, 3–5 traits require a kernel size of at least 7 × 7 pixels. This study contributes to improving the quality of TPD calculations based on traits derived from remote sensing data. We provide a set of recommendations based on our findings. Deforestation and forest degradation from human land use, including primary forest loss, are of growing concern. The conservation of old-growth and other forests with important environmental values is central to many international initiatives aimed at protecting biodiversity, mitigating climate change impacts, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. Current remote-sensing products largely focus on deforestation rather than forest degradation and are dependent on machine learning, calibrated with extensive field measurements. To help address this, we developed a novel approach for mapping forest ecosystem stability, defined in terms of constancy, which is a key characteristic of long-undisturbed (including primary) forests. Our approach categorizes forests into stability classes based on satellite-data time series related to plant water–carbon relationships. Specifically, we used long-term dynamics of the fraction of photosynthetically active radiation intercepted by the canopy (fPAR) and shortwave infrared water stress index (SIWSI) derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for the period 2003–2018. We calculated a set of variables from annual time series of fPAR and SIWSI for representative forest regions at opposite ends of Earth's climatic and latitudinal gradients: boreal forests of Siberia (southern taiga, Russia) and tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin (Kayapó territory, Brazil). Independent validation drew upon high-resolution Landsat imagery and forest cover change data. The results indicate that the proposed approach is accurate and applicable across forest biomes and, thereby, provides a timely and transferrable method to aid in the identification and conservation of stable forests. Forest stock volume (FSV) is a basic data source for estimating forest carbon sink. It is also a crucial parameter that reflects the quality of forest resources and forest management level. The use of remote sensing data combined with a support vector regression (SVR) algorithm has been widely used in FSV estimation. However, due to the complexity and spatial heterogeneity of the forest biological community, in the FSV high-value area with dense vegetation, the optical re-mote sensing variables tend to be saturated, and the sensitivity of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) backscattering features to the FSV is significantly reduced. These factors seriously affect the ac-curacy of the FSV estimation. In this study, Landsat 8 (L8) Operational Land Imager multispectral images and C-band Sentinel-1 (S1) hyper-temporal SAR images were used to extract three re-mote sensing feature datasets: spectral variables (L8), backscattering coefficients (S1), and inter-ferometric SAR factors (S1-InSAR). We proposed a feature selection method based on SVR (FS-SVR) and compared the FSV estimation performance of FS-SVR and stepwise regression analysis (SRA) on the aforementioned three remote sensing feature datasets. Finally, an estima-tion model of coniferous FSV was constructed using the SVR algorithm in Wangyedian Forest Farm, Inner Mongolia, China, and the spatial distribution map of coniferous FSV was predicted. The experimental results show the following: (1) The coherence amplitude and DSM data ob-tained based on S1 images contain information relat-ed to forest canopy height, and the hy-per-temporal S1 image data significantly enrich the diversity of S1-InSAR feature factors. There-fore, the S1-InSAR dataset has a better FSV response than remote sensing factors such as the S1 backscattering coefficient and L8 vegetation index, and the corresponding root mean square er-ror (RMSE) and relative RMSE (rRMSE) values reached 47.6 m3/ha and 20.9%, respectively. (2) The integrated dataset can provide full play to the synergy of the L8, S1, and S1-InSAR remote sensing data. Its RMSE and rRMSE values are 44.3 m3/ha and 19.4% respectively. (3) The proposed FS-SVR method can better select remote sensing variables suitable for FSV estimation than SRA. The average value of the rRMSE (23.17%) based on the three datasets was 13.8% lower than that of the SRA method (26.87%). Protected areas (PAs) are among the main tools for preserving biodiversity and creating an environment for the natural course of ecological processes. The identification of forest biodiversity is especially important for large metropolitan areas. An obvious problem in assessing the efficiency of the PAs network is the lack of up-to-date cartographic materials representing the typological diversity of vegetation. The aim of the paper is to identify forest biodiversity and fragmentation in the example of the Moscow region (MR)—the largest metropolis in Eastern Europe. The typological classification was carried out at a detailed hierarchical level—33 association groups (ass. gr.) considering the diversity of the land cover. A random forest algorithm was used for cartographic mapping (overall accuracy 0.59). Remote sensing (RS) data included Sentinel-2A, DEM SRTM, and PALSAR radar images. Six fragmentation metrics were calculated based on the raster map of forest typological diversity. A significant correlation between the forest diversity and PAs forest patch fragmentation metrics was noted. It has been established that the PAs proportion of the territory accounts for almost 20% only within the northernmost district and noticeably decreases to the south to 1–2%. At the same time, fragmentation noticeably increases from Northeast to Southwest. The category of PAs does not affect the state of the forest cover. Additionally, there was no direct influence of the anthropogenic factor from both local sources and a large regional source, i.e., the city of Moscow. It is shown that the average area of PAs, supporting 75% of the typological diversity of regional communities, was about 1000 ha. The results of the study suggest that there is a general lack of environmental protection measures in the region. It is recommended to increase the area of PAs, primarily for less fragmented forest patches, including indigenous forest-steppe and forest types of communities.

In managed landscapes, conservation planning requires effective methods to identify high-biodiversity areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of airborne laser scanning (ALS) and forest estimates derived from satellite images extracted at two spatial scales for predicting the stand-scale abundance and species richness of birds and beetles in a managed boreal forest landscape. Multiple regression models based on forest data from a 50-m radius (i.e., corresponding to a homogenous forest stand) had better explanatory power than those based on a 200-m radius (i.e., including also parts of adjacent stands). Bird abundance and species richness were best explained by the ALS variables "maximum vegetation height" and "vegetation cover between 0.5 and 3 m" (both positive). Flying beetle abundance and species richness, as well as epigaeic (i.e., ground-living) beetle richness were best explained by a model including the ALS variable "maximum vegetation height" (positive) and the satellite-derived variable "proportion of pine" (negative). Epigaeic beetle abundance was best explained by "maximum vegetation height" at 50 m (positive) and "stem volume" at 200 m (positive). Our results show that forest estimates derived from satellite images and ALS data provide complementary information for explaining forest biodiversity patterns. Forest biodiversity is a key element to support ecosystem functions. Measuring biodiversity is a necessary step to identify critical issues and to choose interventions to be applied in order to protect it. Remote sensing provides consistent quality and standardized data, which can be used to estimate different aspects of biodiversity. The Height Variation Hypothesis (HVH) represents an indirect method for estimating species diversity in forest ecosystems from the LiDAR data, and it assumes that the higher the variation in tree height (height heterogeneity, HH), calculated through the 'Canopy Height Model' (CHM) metric, the more complex the overall structure of the forest and the higher the tree species diversity. To date, the HVH has been tested exclusively with CHM data, assessing the HH only with a single heterogeneity index (the Rao's Q index) without making use of any moving windows (MW) approach. In this study, the HVH has been tested in an alpine coniferous forest situated in the municipality of San Genesio/Jenesien (eastern Italian Alps) at 1100 m, characterized by the presence of 11 different tree species (mainly Pinus sylvestris, Larix decidua, Picea abies followed by Betula alba and Corylus avellana). The HH has been estimated through different heterogeneity measures described in the new R rasterdiv package using, besides the CHM, also other LiDAR metrics (as the percentile or the standard deviation of the height distribution) at various spatial resolutions and MWs (ALS LiDAR data with mean point cloud density of 2.9 point/m 2 ). For each combination of parameters, and for all the considered plots, linear regressions between the Shannon's H′ (used as tree species diversity index based on field data) and the HH have been derived. The results showed that the Rao's Q index (singularly and through a multidimensional approach) performed generally better than the other heterogeneity indices in the assessment of the HH. The CHM and the LiDAR metrics related to the upper quantile point cloud distribution at fine resolution (2.5 m, 5 m) have shown the most important results for the assessment of the HH. The size of the used MW did not influence the general outcomes but instead, it increased when compared to the results found in the literature, where the HVH was tested without MW approach. The outcomes of this study underline that the HVH, calculated with certain heterogeneity indices and LiDAR data, can be considered a useful tool for assessing tree species diversity in considered forest ecosystems. European aspen (Populus tremula L.) is a keystone species for biodiversity of boreal forests. Large-diameter aspens maintain the diversity of hundreds of species, many of which are threatened in Fennoscandia. Due to a low economic value and relatively sparse and scattered occurrence of aspen in boreal forests, there is a lack of information of the spatial and temporal distribution of aspen, which hampers efficient planning and implementation of sustainable forest management practices and conservation efforts. Our objective was to assess identification of European aspen at the individual tree level in a southern boreal forest using high-resolution photogrammetric point cloud (PPC) and multispectral (MSP) orthomosaics acquired with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The structure-from-motion approach was applied to generate RGB imagery-based PPC to be used for individual tree-crown delineation. Multispectral data were collected using two UAV cameras: Parrot Sequoia and MicaSense RedEdge-M. Tree-crown outlines were obtained from watershed segmentation of PPC data and intersected with multispectral mosaics to extract and calculate spectral metrics for individual trees. We assessed the role of spectral data features extracted from PPC and multispectral mosaics and a combination of it, using a machine learning classifier—Support Vector Machine (SVM) to perform two different classifications: discrimination of aspen from the other species combined into one class and classification of all four species (aspen, birch, pine, spruce) simultaneously. In the first scenario, the highest classification accuracy of 84% (F1-score) for aspen and overall accuracy of 90.1% was achieved using only RGB features from PPC, whereas in the second scenario, the highest classification accuracy of 86 % (F1-score) for aspen and overall accuracy of 83.3% was achieved using the combination of RGB and MSP features. The proposed method provides a new possibility for the rapid assessment of aspen occurrence to enable more efficient forest management as well as contribute to biodiversity monitoring and conservation efforts in boreal forests. Sustainable forest management increasingly highlights the maintenance of biological diversity and requires up-to-date information on the occurrence and distribution of key ecological features in forest environments. European aspen (Populus tremula L.) is one key feature in boreal forests contributing significantly to the biological diversity of boreal forest landscapes. However, due to their sparse and scattered occurrence in northern Europe, the explicit spatial data on aspen remain scarce and incomprehensive, which hampers biodiversity management and conservation efforts. Our objective was to study tree-level discrimination of aspen from other common species in northern boreal forests using airborne high-resolution hyperspectral and airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. The study contained multiple spatial analyses: First, we assessed the role of different spectral wavelengths (455–2500 nm), principal component analysis, and vegetation indices (VI) in tree species classification using two machine learning classifiers—support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF). Second, we tested the effect of feature selection for best classification accuracy achievable and third, we identified the most important spectral features to discriminate aspen from the other common tree species. SVM outperformed the RF model, resulting in the highest overall accuracy (OA) of 84% and Kappa value (0.74). The used feature set affected SVM performance little, but for RF, principal component analysis was the best. The most important common VI for deciduous trees contained Conifer Index (CI), Cellulose Absorption Index (CAI), Plant Stress Index 3 (PSI3), and Vogelmann Index 1 (VOG1), whereas Green Ratio (GR), Red Edge Inflection Point (REIP), and Red Well Position (RWP) were specific for aspen. Normalized Difference Red Edge Index (NDRE) and Modified Normalized Difference Index (MND705) were important for coniferous trees. The most important wavelengths for discriminating aspen from other species included reflectance bands of red edge range (724–727 nm) and shortwave infrared (1520–1564 nm and 1684–1706 nm). The highest classification accuracy of 92% (F1-score) for aspen was achieved using the SVM model with mean reflectance values combined with VI, which provides a possibility to produce a spatially explicit map of aspen occurrence that can contribute to biodiversity management and conservation efforts in boreal forests. Knowledge about forest structures, particularly of deadwood, is fundamental for understanding, protecting, and conserving forest biodiversity. While individual tree-based approaches using single wavelength airborne laserscanning (ALS) can successfully distinguish broadleaf and coniferous trees, they still perform multiple tree species classifications with limited accuracy. Moreover, the mapping of standing dead trees is becoming increasingly important for damage calculation after pest infestation or biodiversity assessment. Recent advances in sensor technology have led to the development of new ALS systems that provide up to three different wavelengths. In this study, we present a novel method which classifies three tree species (Norway spruce, European beech, Silver fir), and dead spruce trees with crowns using full waveform ALS data acquired from three different sensors (wavelengths 532 nm, 1064 nm, 1550 nm). The ALS data were acquired in the Bavarian Forest National Park (Germany) under leaf-on conditions with a maximum point density of 200 points/m 2 . To avoid overfitting of the classifier and to find the most prominent features, we embed a forward feature selection method. We tested our classification procedure using 20 sample plots with 586 measured reference trees. Using single wavelength datasets, the highest accuracy achieved was 74% (wavelength = 1064 nm), followed by 69% (wavelength = 1550 nm) and 65% (wavelength = 532 nm). An improvement of 8–17% over single wavelength datasets was achieved when the multi wavelength data were used. Overall, the contribution of the waveform-based features to the classification accuracy was higher than that of the geometric features by approximately 10%. Our results show that the features derived from a multi wavelength ALS point cloud significantly improve the detailed mapping of tree species and standing dead trees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation structure is a crucial component of habitat selection for many taxa, and airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology is increasingly used to measure forest structure. Many studies have examined the relationship between LiDAR-derived structural characteristics and wildlife, but few have examined those characteristics in relation to small mammals, specifically, small mammal diversity. The aim of this study was to determine if LiDAR could predict small mammal diversity in a temperate-mixed forest community in Northern Wisconsin, USA, and which LiDAR-derived structural variables best predict small mammal diversity. We calculated grid metrics from LiDAR point cloud data for 17 plots in three differently managed sites and related the metrics to small mammal diversity calculated from five months of small mammal trapping data. We created linear models, then used model selection and multi-model inference as well as model fit metrics to determine if LiDAR-derived structural variables could predict small mammal diversity. We found that small mammal diversity could be predicted by LiDAR-derived variables including structural diversity, cover, and canopy complexity as well as site (as a proxy for management). Structural diversity and canopy complexity were positively related with small mammal diversity, while cover was negatively related to small mammal diversity. Although this study was conducted in a single habitat type during a single season, it demonstrates that LiDAR can be used to predict small mammal diversity in this location and possibly can be expanded to predict small mammal diversity across larger spatial scales. Recent advances in remote sensing technology provide sufficient spatial detail to achieve species-level classification over large vegetative ecosystems. In deciduous-dominated forests, however, as tree species diversity and forest structural diversity increase, the frequency of spectral overlap between species also increases and our ability to classify tree species significantly decreases. This study proposes an operational workflow of individual tree-based species classification for a temperate, mixed deciduous forest using three-seasonal WorldView images, involving three steps of individual tree crown (ITC) delineation, non-forest gap elimination, and object-based classification. The process of species classification started with ITC delineation using the spectral angle segmentation algorithm, followed by object-based random forest classifications. A total of 672 trees was located along three triangular transects for training and validation. For single-season images, the late-spring, mid-summer, and early-fall images achieve the overall accuracies of 0.46, 0.42, and 0.35, respectively. Combining the spectral information of the early-spring, mid-summer, and early-fall images increases the overall accuracy of classification to 0.79. However, further adding the late-fall image to separate deciduous and coniferous trees as an extra step was not successful. Compared to traditional four-band (Blue, Green, Red, Near-Infrared) images, the four additional bands of WorldView images (i.e., Coastal, Yellow, Red Edge, and Near-Infrared2) contribute to the species classification greatly (OA: 0.79 vs. 0.53). This study gains insights into the contribution of the additional spectral bands and multi-seasonal images to distinguishing species with seemingly high degrees of spectral overlap. Afromontane forests are biodiversity hotspots and provide essential ecosystem services. However, they are under pressure as a result of an expanding human population and the impact of climate change. In many instances electric fencing has become a necessary management strategy to protect forest integrity and reduce human-wildlife conflict. The impact of confining hitherto migratory elephant populations within forests remains unknown, and monitoring largely inaccessible areas is challenging. We explore the application of remote sensing to monitor the impact of confinement, employing the Breaks For Additive Season and Trend (BFAST) time-series decomposition method over a 15-year period on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) (MOD13Q1) datasets for two Kenyan forests. Results indicated that BFAST was able to identify disturbances from anthropogenic, fire and elephant damage. Sequential monitoring enabled the detection of gradual changes in the forest canopy, with degradation and regeneration being observed in both sites. Annual rates of forest loss in both areas were significantly lower than reported in other studies on Afromontane forests, suggesting that installing fences has reduced land-use conversion from human-related disturbances. Negative changes in EVI were predominantly gradual degradation rather than large-scale, abrupt clearings of the forest. Results presented here demonstrate that BFAST can be used to monitor biotic and abiotic drivers of change in Afromontane forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
