Invasive alien species reduce biodiversity. In southern Brazil, the genus Pinus is considered invasive, and its dispersal by humans has resulted in this species reaching ecosystems that are more sensitive and less suitable for cultivation, as is the case for the restingas on Santa Catarina Island. Invasion control requires persistent efforts to identify and treat each new invasion case as a priority. In this study, areas invaded by Pinus sp. in restingas were mapped using images taken by a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS, or drone) to identify the invasion areas in great detail, enabling management to be planned for the most recently invaded areas, where management is simpler, more effective, and less costly. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) was applied on images taken from a conventional RGB camera embedded in an RPAS, which resulted in a global accuracy of 89.56%, a mean kappa index of 0.86, and an F-score of 0.90 for Pinus sp. The Cerrado biome is being gradually reduced. Remote sensing has been widely used to investigate spatio-temporal changes in the landscape, which are frequently limited to mapping with orbital sensors, while the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) proved to be advantageous in terms of spatial resolution and the application of advanced digital processing techniques. In this study, we investigated a vereda (humid area) of a conservation unit in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) was applied to images obtained by RPAS to distinguish the phytophysiognomies of plant strata from the vereda and to diagnose the recovery of native and invasive vegetation after prescribed burning. The study was carried out in the following five stages: biomass collection; quality analysis of the land cover; phytosociological survey; collection of control points using a GNSS receiver (type L1/L2); and the capture of aerial images with an RGB camera coupled to a DJI Phantom 4 Pro, which was performed through overflights in three different periods. Object–Based Image Analysis was subsequently performed using the Nearest Neighbor classifier combined with Feature Space Optimization, obtaining classifications with accuracy and Kappa indexes greater than 80% and 0.80, respectively. The results of image processing allowed us to infer that fire acted as a renewing agent for native vegetation and as an inhibiting agent for invasive vegetation. The classification analyses combined with the phytosociological analysis allowed us to infer that the vereda is in the process of maturation. Therefore, the study demonstrated the potential of data obtained by RPAS for the diagnosis and analysis of vegetation dynamics in small wetlands submitted to Integrated Fire Management (IFM). The applicability of remote sensing enables the prediction of nutritional value, phytosanitary conditions, and productivity of crops in a non-destructive manner, with greater efficiency than conventional techniques. By identifying problems early and providing specific management recommendations in bean cultivation, farmers can reduce crop losses, provide more accurate and adequate diagnoses, and increase the efficiency of agricultural resources. The aim was to analyze the efficiency of vegetation indices using remote sensing techniques from UAV multispectral images and Sentinel-2A/MSI to evaluate the spectral response of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivation in different phenological stages (V4 = 32 DAS; R5 = 47 DAS; R6 = 60 DAS; R8 = 74 DAS; and R9 = 89 DAS, in 99 days after sowing—DAS) with the application of doses of magnesium (0, 250, 500, and 1000 g ha−1). The field characteristics analyzed were mainly chlorophyll content, productivity, and plant height in an experimental area by central pivot in the midwest region of Brazil. Data from UAV vegetation indices served as variables for the treatments implemented in the field and were statistically correlated with the crop's biophysical parameters. The spectral response of the bean crop was also detected through spectral indices (NDVI, NDMI_GAO, and NDWI_GAO) from Sentinel-2A/MSI, with spectral resolutions of 10 and 20 m. The quantitative values of NDVI from UAV and Sentinel-2A/MSI were evaluated by multivariate statistical analysis, such as principal components (PC), and cophenetic correlation coefficient (CCC), in the different phenological stages. The NDVI and MCARI vegetation indices stood out for productivity prediction, with r = 0.82 and RMSE of 330 and 329 kg ha−1, respectively. The TGI had the best performance in terms of plant height (r = 0.73 and RMSE = 7.4 cm). The best index for detecting the relative chlorophyll SPAD content was MCARI (r = 0.81; R2 = 0.66 and RMSE = 10.14 SPAD), followed by NDVI (r = 0.81; R2 = 0.65 and RMSE = 10.19 SPAD). The phenological stage with the highest accuracy in estimating productive variables was R9 (Physiological maturation). GNDVI in stages R6 and R9 and VARI in stage R9 were significant at 5% for magnesium doses, with quadratic regression adjustments and a maximum point at 500 g ha−1. Vegetation indices based on multispectral bands of Sentinel-2A/MSI exhibited a spectral dynamic capable of aiding in the management of bean crops throughout their cycle. PCA (PC1 = 48.83% and PC2 = 39.25%) of the satellite multiple regression model from UAV vs. Sentinel-2A/MSI presented a good coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.667) and low RMSE = 0.12. UAV data for the NDVI showed that the Sentinel-2A/MSI samples were more homogeneous, while the UAV samples detected a more heterogeneous quantitative pattern, depending on the development of the crop and the application of doses of magnesium. Results shown denote the potential of using geotechnologies, especially the spectral response of vegetation indices in monitoring common bean crops. Although UAV and Sentinel-2A/MSI technologies are effective in evaluating standards of the common bean crop cycle, more studies are needed to better understand the relationship between field variables and spectral responses. In two small and isolated wetlands located at the interface of the Atlantic Forest and Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) in São Paulo State, Brazil, we employed a pixel-based supervised classification approach using a combination of panchromatic and multispectral bands obtained from Landsat 2, 5, 7, and CBERS-04A satellites (ranging from 80 to 2 m/pixel). In addition, we acquired DJI Phantom 4 Pro UAV-RGB images in twelve different periods with a resolution of +5 cm/pixel. Furthermore, we utilized 2D and 3D Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to obtain data on the surroundings and center of the wetlands. Finally, we conducted a climatological data analysis. The results from the multisource data allowed us to classify the ecosystems as geographically isolated wetlands (GIWs), for which we documented a seasonal month-to-month (12 months) spatial variation of inundated area, vegetation pattern, soil water interaction, and a point of surface and deep-subsurface water interaction. These results are essential for high-accuracy characterization of small wetlands' hydrodynamics and hydroperiods at the local scale. Our study contributes to optimizing GIWs understanding, monitoring, and reapplication of the methodology in other wetlands or small ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brazilian livestock is predominantly extensive, with approximately 90% of the production being sustained on pasture, which occupies around 20% of the territory. It is estimated that more than half of Brazilian pastures have some level of degradation. In this study, we mapped and evaluated the spatiotemporal dynamics of pasture quality in Brazil, between 2010 and 2018, considering three classes of degradation: Absent (D0), Intermediate (D1), and Severe (D2). There was no variation in the total area occupied by pastures in the evaluated period, in spite of the accentuated spatial dynamics. The percentage of non-degraded pastures increased by ~12%, due to the recovery of degraded areas and the emergence of new pasture areas. However, about 44 Mha of the pasture area is currently severely degraded. The dynamics in pasture quality were not homogeneous in property size classes. We observed that in the approximately 2.68 million properties with livestock activity, the proportion with quality gains was twice as low in small properties compared with large ones, and the proportion with losses was three times greater, showing an increase in inequality between properties with more and fewer resources (large and small properties, respectively). The areas occupied by pastures in Brazil present a unique opportunity to increase livestock production and make areas available for agriculture, without the need for new deforestation in the coming decades.
