The eco-hydrological process related to vegetation on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau is special, and the impact of snow cover on the growth of vegetation is unique and important. In this study, we analyzed the multi-year variations in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and snow cover on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau from spatial and temporal perspectives and determined the relationship between the changes in the NDVI and snow cover. Results showed that in the last 40 years, the rate of change in the snow depth on the plateau was −0.016 mm/a, and the NDVI changed by 0.0005/a. The correlations (|R| values) between the different factors and the NDVI followed the order of precipitation (0.77) > snow depth (0.76) > temperature (0.67) > solar radiation (0.21). The responses of the NDVI to changes in meteorological elements were synchronous, whereas the opposite was found for the snow cover. The snow cover had more significant impacts on vegetation at higher elevations. The NDVI had a lag of about 2 months from the onset of the snow cover, and heavy snow events had negative impacts on the NDVI for more than 3 years. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) can depict the status of vegetation growth and coverage in grasslands, whereas coarse spatial resolution, cloud cover, and vegetation phenology limit its applicability in fine-scale research, especially in areas covering various vegetation or in fragmented landscapes. In this study, a methodology was developed for obtaining the 30 m annual maximum NDVI to overcome these shortcomings. First, the Landsat NDVI was simulated by fusing Landsat and MODIS NDVI by using the enhanced spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (ESTARFM), and then a single-peaked symmetric logistic model was employed to fit the Landsat NDVI data and derive the maximum NDVI in a year. The annual maximum NDVI was then used as a season-independent substitute to monitor grassland variation from 2001 to 2022 in a typical area covering the major vegetation types in the Qinghai Lake Basin. The major conclusions are as follows: (1) Our method for reconstructing the NDVI time series yielded higher accuracy than the existing dataset. The root mean square error (RMSE) for 91.8% of the pixels was less than 0.1. (2) The annual maximum NDVI from 2001 to 2022 exhibited spatial distribution characteristics, with higher values in the northern and southern regions and lower values in the central area. In addition, the earlier vegetation growth maximum dates were related to the vegetation type and accompanied by higher NDVI maxima in the study area. (3) The overall interannual variation showed a slight increasing trend from 2001 to 2022, and the degraded area was characterized as patches and was dominated by Alpine kobresia spp., Forb Meadow, whose change resulted from a combination of permafrost degradation, overgrazing, and rodent infestation and should be given more attention in the Qinghai Lake Basin. In the context of global climate change and the increase in drought frequency, monitoring and accurately assessing the impact of hydrological process limitations on vegetation growth is of paramount importance. Our study undertakes a comprehensive evaluation of the efficacy of satellite remote sensing vegetation indices—Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (MODIS NDVI product), kernel NDVI (kNDVI), and Solar-Induced chlorophyll Fluorescence (GOSIF product) in this regard. Initially, we applied the LightGBM-Shapley additive explanation framework to assess the influencing factors on the three vegetation indices. We found that Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) is the primary factor affecting vegetation in southern China (18°–30°N). Subsequently, using Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) estimates from flux tower sites as a performance benchmark, we evaluated the ability of these vegetation indices to accurately reflect vegetation GPP changes during drought conditions. Our findings indicate that SIF serves as the most effective surrogate for GPP, capturing the variability of GPP during drought periods with minimal time lag. Additionally, our study reveals that the performance of kNDVI significantly varies depending on the estimation of different kernel parameters. The application of a time-heuristic estimation method could potentially enhance kNDVI's capacity to capture GPP dynamics more effectively during drought periods. Overall, this study demonstrates that satellite-based SIF data are more adept at monitoring vegetation responses to water stress and accurately tracking GPP anomalies caused by droughts. These findings not only provide critical insights into the selection and optimization of remote sensing vegetation product but also offer a valuable framework for future research aimed at improving our monitoring and understanding of vegetation growth status under climatic changes. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is widely used for monitoring vegetation status, as accurate and reliable NDVI time series are crucial for understanding the relationship between environmental conditions, vegetation health, and productivity. Ground digital cameras have been recognized as important potential data sources for validating remote-sensing NDVI products. However, differences in the spectral characteristics and imaging methods between sensors onboard satellites and ground digital cameras hinder direct consistency analyses, thereby limiting the quantitative application of camera-based observations. To address this limitation and meet the needs of vegetation monitoring research and remote-sensing NDVI validation, this study implements a novel NDVI camera. The proposed camera incorporates narrowband dual-pass filters designed to precisely separate red and near-infrared (NIR) spectral bands, which are aligned with the configuration of sensors onboard satellites. Through software-controlled imaging parameters, the camera captures the real radiance of vegetation reflection, ensuring the acquisition of accurate NDVI values while preserving the evolving trends of the vegetation status. The performance of this NDVI camera was evaluated using a hyperspectral spectrometer in the Hulunbuir Grassland over a period of 93 days. The results demonstrate distinct seasonal characteristics in the camera-derived NDVI time series using the Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC) index. Moreover, in comparison to the GCC index, the camera's NDVI values exhibit greater consistency with those obtained from the hyperspectral spectrometer, with a mean deviation of 0.04, and a relative root mean square error of 9.68%. This indicates that the narrowband NDVI, compared to traditional color indices like the GCC index, has a stronger ability to accurately capture vegetation changes. Cross-validation using the NDVI results from the camera and the PlanetScope satellite further confirms the potential of the camera-derived NDVI data for consistency analyses with remote sensing-based NDVI products, thus highlighting the potential of camera observations for quantitative applications The research findings emphasize that the novel NDVI camera, based on a narrowband spectral design, not only enables the acquisition of real vegetation index (VI) values but also facilitates the direct validation of vegetation remote-sensing NDVI products. We studied the correspondence between historical series of tree-ring width (TRW) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI, i.e., greenness index) values acquired monthly over an entire year by unmanned aerial vehicles. Dendrochronological techniques revealed differentiated responses between species and seasonality. Pinus engelmannii Carrière and Juniperus deppeana Steudel were affected by warm temperatures (TMAX) during the winter prior to growth and benefited from precipitation (PP) during the seasons prior to the spring period. The standardized precipitation–evapotranspiration index (SPEI) confirmed the high sensitivity of P. engelmannii to drought (r = 0.7 SPEI). Quercus grisea Liebm. presented a positive association with PP at the beginning and end of its growth season. Monthly NDVI data at the individual tree level in the three species (NDVI ~0.37–0.48) statistically confirmed the temporal differences. Q. grisea showed a drastic decrease during the dry season (NDVI = 0.1) that had no impact on drought sensitivity in the same period, according to the climate-TRW relationship. We conclude that a relationship is plausible between the crown greenness index and radial growth, although more extended temporal windows of the NDVI should be explored. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is one of the most common metrics used to describe vegetation dynamics. Unfortunately, low-quality pixels resulting from contamination (by features including clouds, snow, aerosols, and mixed factors) have impeded NDVI products' widespread application. Researchers have thought of several ways to improve NDVI quality when contamination occurs. However, most of these algorithms are based on the noise-negative deviation principle, which aligns low-value NDVI products to an upper line but ignores cases where absolute surface values are low. Consequently, to fill in these research gaps, in this article, we use the random forest model to produce a set of high-quality NDVI products to represent actual surface characteristics more accurately and naturally. Climate and geographical products are used as model inputs to describe environmental factors. They represent the random forest (RF) model that establishes relationships between MODIS NDVI products and meteorological products in high-quality areas. In addition, auxiliary data and empirical knowledge are employed to meet filling requirements. Notably, the random forest (RF) algorithm exhibits a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.024 and a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.034, in addition to a coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.974. Furthermore, the MAE and RMSE of the RF-based method decreased by 0.014 and 0.019, respectively, when compared to those of the STSG (spatial–temporal Savitzky–Golay) plan and by 0.013 and 0.015, respectively, when compared to the LSTM (long short-term memory) method. R2 increased by 0.039 and 0.027, respectively, compared to the STSG and LSTM methods. We introduced a novel series of NDVI products that demonstrated consistent spatial and temporal connectivity. Vegetation is an important type of land cover. Long-term, large-scale, and high-precision vegetation monitoring is of great significance for ecological environment investigation and regional sustainable development in protected areas. This paper develops a long-term remote sensing monitoring method for vegetation by calculating the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform and Landsat satellite remote sensing images. First, based on Landsat long-term satellite images and GEE, the spatiotemporal distribution map of the NDVI is accurately drawn. Subsequently, the NDVI is accurately classified, and the time trend analysis of the NDVI is conducted based on the NDVI mean trend graphs, transition matrices, etc. Then, combined with Moran's I, high/low clusters, and other methods, the spatial pattern characteristics of the NDVI are analyzed. Finally, climate factors, terrain factors, and anthropologic factors are considered comprehensively. An analysis of the factors affecting the evolution of the NDVI is performed. Taking Zhoushan Island, China, as an example, an experiment is conducted, and the results reveal that (1) the average NDVI exhibits a decreasing trend from 1985 to 2022, decreasing from 0.53 in 1985 to 0.46 in 2022. (2) Regarding vegetation index transitions, the high NDVI areas (0.6–1) exhibit the most substantial shift toward moderately high NDVI values (0.4–0.6), covering an area of 83.10 km2. (3) There is an obvious spatial agglomeration phenomenon in the NDVI on Zhoushan Island. The high-high NDVI clusters and the significant hot spots are predominantly concentrated in the island's interior regions, while the low-low NDVI clusters and the significant cold spots are mainly situated along the coastal areas. (4) The DEM, slope, and temperature have a greater influence among the single factors on the spatial pattern distribution of the NDVI in 2015. There are significant differences in the spatial pattern distribution of the NDVI between the temperature and DEM, temperature and slope, DEM and precipitation, slope and precipitation, aspect and population, and aspect and gross domestic product (GDP). The DEM and slope, DEM and temperature, and DEM and population are three sets of factors with a strong influence on spatial pattern interaction. This study provides data support for the scientific management of vegetation resources on Zhoushan Island and is of great significance to the sustainable development of the island region. The successful launch of Landsat-9 marks a significant achievement in preserving the data legacy and ensuring the continuity of Landsat's calibrated Earth observations. This study comprehensively assesses the continuity of reflectance and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) between Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 Operational Land Imagers (OLIs) over diverse Chinese landscapes. It reveals that sensor discrepancies minimally impact reflectance and NDVI consistency. Although Landsat-9's top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance is slightly lower than that of Landsat-8, small root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) ranging from 0.0102 to 0.0248 for VNIR and SWIR bands (and larger RMSE for NDVI at 0.0422) fall within acceptable ranges for Earth observation applications. Applying atmospheric corrections markedly enhances reflectance uniformity and brings regression slopes closer to unity. Further, Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) adjustments improve comparability, ensuring measurement reliability, and the NDVI maintains robust consistency across various reflectance types, time series, and land cover classes. These findings affirm Landsat-9's success in achieving data continuity within the Landsat program, allowing interchangeable use of Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 OLI data for diverse Earth observation purposes. Future research may explore specific sensor correlations across different vegetation types and seasons while integrating data from complementary platforms, such as Sentinel-2, to enhance the understanding of data continuity factors. Estimating crop coefficients and evapotranspiration (ET) accurately is crucial for optimizing irrigation. Remote sensing techniques using green canopy cover, leaf area index (LAI), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) have been applied to estimate basal crop coefficients (Kcb) and ET for different crops. However, analysis of the potential of these techniques to improve water management in irrigated potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is still lacking. This study aimed to assess the modified nonlinear relationship between LAI, Kcb and NDVI in estimating crop coefficients (Kc) and ET of potato. Moreover, Kc and ET were derived from the measured fraction of green canopy cover (FGCC) and the FAO-56 approach. ET estimated from the FAO-56, FGCC and NDVI approaches were compared with the ET simulated using the LINTUL-Potato model. The results showed that the Kc values based on FGCC and NDVI were on average 0.16 lower than values based on FAO-56 Kc during the mid-season growing stage. ET estimated from FAO-56, FGCC and NDVI compared well with ET calculated by the LINTUL-Potato model, with RMSE values of 0.83, 0.79, and 0.78 mm day−1, respectively. These results indicate that dynamic crop coefficients and potato ET can be estimated from canopy cover and NDVI. Monitoring wheat yield and production is essential for ensuring global food security. Remote sensing can be used to achieve it due to its ability to provide global, comprehensive, synoptic, and repetitive information in near real-time. This study used the 2006–2016 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NVDI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index 2 (EVI2) time series at a 250 m spatial resolution and 2006–2011 MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI) time series at a 300 m spatial resolution. The post-maximum period for pixels containing wheat was selected based on the EU's Common Agrarian Policy (CAP) and Corine Land Cover (CLC) data. It was correlated with yield and production values from governmental statistics (GS) of the largest Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics level 2 (NUTS-2) wheat producers in Spain and for Spain overall. The selection of wheat masks was crucial for the accuracy of the models, with CAP masks offering greater forecasting capability. Models using CLC produced R2 values between 0.45 and 0.7, while those using CAP outperformed the former with R2 values of 0.9 throughout Spain. Production models outperformed yield models, and MTCI was the vegetation index (VI) that provided the greatest R2 value of 0.94. The phenological parameters estimated from different data may vary, especially in response to climatic factors. Therefore, we estimated the start of the growing season (SOS) and the end of the growing season (EOS) based on sunlight-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the near-infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIRv). The SIF, NDVI and NIRv breakpoints were detected, and the trends and change-points of phenological parameters based on these data were analyzed. The correlations between the phenological parameters and snow-related factors, precipitation, temperature, soil moisture and population density were also analyzed. The results showed that SIF and NIRv could identify breakpoints early. SIF could estimate the latest SOS and the earliest EOS. NDVI could estimate the earliest SOS and the latest EOS. The change-points of SOSSIF were mostly concentrated from 2001 to 2003, and those of SOSNDVI and SOSNIRv occurred later. The change-points of EOSSIF and EOSNIRv were mostly concentrated from 2001 to 2007, and those of EOSSIF occurred later. Differently from the weak correlation with SOSSIF, SOSNDVI and SOSNIRv were significantly correlated with snow-related factors. The correlation between the meteorological factors in the summer and autumn and EOSSIF was the most significant. The population density showed the highest degree of interpretation for SOSNIRv and EOSNDVI. The results reveal the differences and potentials of different remote-sensing parameters in estimating phenological indicators, which is helpful for better understanding the dynamic changes in phenology and the response to changes in various influencing factors. Extreme drought is increasing in frequency and intensity in many regions globally. Understanding the changes in vegetation resistance and resilience under aggravated drought is essential for maintaining regional ecosystem stability. In this study, a drought event–vegetation response framework was developed to explore vegetation resistance and resilience changes. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was correlated with the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) at multiple timescales to screen out the vegetation response time to drought. Then, the SPEI for the response time was detected using run theory to identify drought events during the period 2000–2017. Finally, drought-induced NDVI anomaly changes were identified using a sliding window to explore the changes in resistance and resilience to drought. This study focuses on Jilin province, China, which contains a famous environmentally vulnerable area. The results illustrate that the response time of vegetation to drought is 3 months. The northwest of Jilin province is considered to be drought-vulnerable because it has suffered the most drought events, i.e., 19–21 times, with severities in the range of 2.6–3.2 and durations in the range of 3.6–4.1 months. Grassland shows the weakest resistance and the strongest resilience, and tree cover shows the strongest resistance and the weakest resilience under severe drought disturbance among all vegetation. As the severity and duration of drought increase, the resistance decreases, and the resilience increases. During the growing season, the drought from May to July significantly impacts the vegetation resistance. Drought occurring from June to July has much less impact on resilience. Drought in August to September has less impact on resistance and a more significant impact on resilience. In the context of global climate change, many studies have focused on the interannual vegetation variation trends and their response to precipitation and temperature, but ignored the effects of seasonal variability. This study explored the relationship between normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and seasonal climate elements in the Wuliangsu Lake Basin area from 1990 to 2020, and quantified the impacts of human activities on vegetation dynamics. We used Landsat series data to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of the NDVI using the trend analysis method, the Theil–Sen median, the Mann–Kendall test, and the Hurst index. Then, we used meteorological data and land use data to quantify the effects of human activities using residual analysis, and correlation methods to determine the driving forces of NDVI variations. The results showed that the NDVI changes presented obvious regional characteristics, with a decreasing trend from southeast to northwest in Wuliangsu Lake Basin. Due to global warming, the start of the growing season (SOS) is 4.3 days (2001 to 2010) and 6.8 days (2011 to 2020) earlier compared with 1990 to 2000. The end of the season (EOS) is advanced by 3.6 days (2001 to 2010), and delayed by 8.9 days (2011 to 2020). Seasonal (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) NDVIs with precipitation and temperature show spatial heterogeneity. Further, changes in grasslands and woodlands were vulnerable to climate change and human activities. Since the beginning of the 21st century, human activity was the driving force for vegetation improvement in the Dengkou, west-central, north and southwest regions, where ecological instability is weak. This finding can provide a theoretical basis for the implementation of the same type of ecological restoration projects and the construction of ecological civilization, and contribute to the regional green and sustainable development. This paper utilizes high-resolution ERA5 hourly data from 1980 to 2020 and long-term normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series obtained from remote sensing and applies trend analysis, correlation analysis, lag analysis, and other methods to study the spatiotemporal characteristics of extreme rainfall at daily and hourly scales in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. The paper explores the NDVI's variability and its relationship with extreme hourly precipitation and analyzes the main factors affecting it. The study made the following observations: (1) The extreme daily precipitation in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain shows a decreasing trend, with a 13.6 mm/yr reduction rate. In contrast, the proportion of extreme rainfall to total precipitation generally exceeds 20%, and the intensity of extreme rain has gradually increased. The spatial distribution pattern of extreme rainfall follows the distribution pattern of China's rain belts, with the terrain being an important influencing factor. The high-incidence areas for extreme rainfall are the Huaihe River region and the Shandong Peninsula. (2) The observed significant increase in hourly extreme precipitation events in the Shandong and Henan provinces of the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain has led to an increased risk of flooding, while the corresponding events in the northwest region of the Plain have exhibited a gradual weakening trend over time. (3) The extreme hourly precipitation in the Huang-Huai-Hai plain shows a frequent and scattered pattern, with decreasing intensity over time. Extreme precipitation mainly occurs in the first half of the night, especially between 19:00 and 21:00, with extreme hourly rainfall intensity fluctuating between 0.2 and 0.25 and the proportion of rainfall to total precipitation reaching as high as 10%. The spatial distribution of extreme hourly rainstorms during the peak period (19:00–21:00) exhibits a high rainfall volume, intensity, and frequency pattern in the eastern region, while the western part exhibits low rainfall volume, intensity, and frequency. (4) The incidence of extremely heavy rainfall in an hour has exhibited a more significant increase compared to extreme daily events in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, primarily in the form of backward-type precipitation. Hourly extreme precipitation events in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain are affected by terrain and land use/cover change (LUCC), with the micro-topography of hilly areas leading to a concentrated distribution of precipitation and LUCC suppressing extreme precipitation events in arid climates. (5) At the ten-day scale, the spatial distribution of the NDVI shows a gradually increasing trend from northwest to southeast, with the highest NDVI value reaching up to 0.6 in the southern part of the study area. For extreme hourly precipitation, there is no significant change observed at the multi-year ten-day scale; while the NDVI in the northern and central parts of the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain shows a significant decreasing trend, in contrast, it presents a significant increasing trend in the southern region. (6) Finally, the correlation between NDVI at the ten-day scale and extreme hourly precipitation exhibits a decreasing pattern from north to south, with a correlation coefficient decreasing from 0.48 to 0.08. The lagged correlation analysis of extreme hourly rainfall and NDVI for one, two, and three ten-day periods shows that the lagged effect of extreme hourly precipitation on NDVI is negligible. Analyzing the correlation between extreme hourly rainfall and NDVI for different months, the impact of extreme hourly precipitation on NDVI is predominantly negative, except for June, which shows a positive correlation (0.35), passing the significance test. Land degradation destroys human habitats, and vegetation is a marker reflecting land degradation. In this article, the Balochistan Province of Pakistan, which has a fragile ecological environment, was selected as a typical case to analyze its land degradation over 21 years. Relevant studies that used the NDVI and remote sensing data to monitor land degradation already existed. Based on the data product of MODIS, this study obtained the spatio-temporal trends of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) changes from 2000 to 2020 using the sen+ Mann–Kendall (MK) test and Hurst index and analyzed the driving factors of land degradation and restoration by employing the multiple stepwise regression method. The residual analysis method was an effective tool for distinguishing between anthropogenic and climatic impacts, given that not all regions have a significant correlation between the NDVI and rainfall. The main climatic drivers of the NDVI were derived based on the Geodetector analysis and stripped of the main climatic factors by residual analysis to explore the influence of anthropogenic factors on the NDVI. The results show the following: (1) Balochistan is dominated by land restoration. Land restoration is mainly dominated by climate as well as both climate and human factors, and land degradation is mainly dominated by climate and human factors. (2) The Geodetector-based study found high correlations between the NDVI and TMP, MAP, AET and PET, complementing most previous residual analyses that considered only precipitation and temperature. In Balochistan, TMP, AET, PET and MAP were the dominant climatic factors affecting the spatial distribution of the NDVI; TMP with MAP and TMP with AET were the main interactive factors in the spatial distribution of the NDVI. (3) The article quantifies the impact of the anthropogenic drivers on land degradation. Human activities positively influenced the NDVI in 91.02% of the area and negatively influenced it in 8.98% of the area. (4) The overall trend of the NDVI was mainly stable, with stronger improvement than degradation, and showed strong persistence. The above findings enrich our understanding of the climatic impacts of land degradation and human impacts in arid or semi-arid regions and provide a scientific basis for ecological engineering to achieve ecological conservation and quality development in Balochistan, Pakistan. The vegetation on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), as a major component of the land–atmosphere interaction, affects the TP thermal conditions. And, as a direct climatic factor of vegetation, precipitation over the TP is significantly regulated by the Indian summer monsoon (ISM). Using remote-sensing-based vegetation images, meteorological observations, and reanalysis datasets, this study deeply explored the influence of the ISM on vegetation on the TP in its main growing season, where the vegetation on the TP is indicated by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The findings reveal that the ISM is a critical external factor impacting the TP vegetation and has a significantly positive correlation with the TP precipitation and NDVI. Corresponding to a strong ISM, the South Asia high moves northwestward toward the TP and Iranian Plateau with an increase in intensity, and the cyclonic circulation develops over the south of the TP in the middle-lower troposphere. This tropospheric circulation structure aids in the transportation of more water vapor to the TP and enhances convection there, which facilitates more precipitation and thus the TP vegetation growth, featuring a uniform NDVI pattern. Since the positive correlation between precipitation over the TP and NDVI is weaker than that between the ISM and NDVI, we suggest that the ISM can influence the TP vegetation growth not only through changing precipitation but also through other local climatic factors. The increased convection and precipitation over the TP induced by the ISM can also affect the surface thermal conditions, featuring an interaction between the TP vegetation and heat sources. The evapotranspiration of vegetation and its coverage affect local latent and sensible heat fluxes, while the TP thermal condition changes affect in return the vegetation growth. In addition, the changes in thermal conditions over the TP caused by the substantial increase in vegetation may have a de-correlation effect on the relationship between the ISM and uniform NDVI pattern after the TP vegetation reaches its maximum coverage. Exploring the relationship between cereal yield and the remotely sensed normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is of great importance to decision-makers and agricultural stakeholders. In this study, an approach based on the Pearson correlation coefficient and linear regression is carried out to reveal the relationship between cereal yield and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) NDVI data in the Fez-Meknes region of Morocco. The results obtained show strong correlations reaching 0.70 to 0.89 between the NDVI and grain yield. The linear regression model explains 58 to 79% of the variability in yield in regional provinces marked by the importance of cereal cultivation, and 51 to 53% in the mountainous provinces with less agricultural land devoted to major cereals. The regression slopes indicate that a 0.1 increase in the NDVI results in an expected increase in grain yield of 4.9 to 8.7 quintals (q) per ha, with an average of 6.8 q/ha throughout the Fez-Meknes region. The RMSE ranges from 2.12 to 4.96 q/ha. These results are promising in terms of early yield forecasting based on MODIS-NDVI data, and consequently, in terms of grain import planning, especially since the national grain production does not cover the demand. As one of the earliest remote sensing indices, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been employed extensively for vegetation research. However, despite an abundance of NDVI review articles, these studies are predominantly limited to either one subject area or one area, with systematic NDVI reviews being relatively rare. Bibliometrics is a useful method of analyzing scientific literature that has been widely used in many disciplines; however, it has not yet been applied to comprehensively analyze NDVI research. Therefore, we used bibliometrics and scientific mapping methods to analyze citation data retrieved from the Web of Science during 1985–2021 with NDVI as the topic. According to the analysis results, the amount of NDVI research increased exponentially during the study period, and the related research fields became increasingly varied. Moreover, a greater number of satellite and aerial remote sensing platforms resulted in more diverse NDVI data sources. In future, machine learning methods and cloud computing platforms led by Google Earth Engine will substantially improve the accuracy and production efficiency of NDVI data products for more effective global research. Remote sensing image composites are crucial for a wide range of remote sensing applications, such as multi-decadal time series analysis. The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument has provided daily data since the early 1980s at a spatial resolution of 1 km, allowing analyses of climate change-related environmental processes. For monitoring vegetation conditions, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is the most widely used metric. However, to actually enable such analyses, a consistent NDVI time series over the AVHRR time-span needs to be created. In this context, the aim of this study is to thoroughly assess the effect of different compositing procedures on AVHRR NDVI composites, as no standard procedure has been established. Thirteen different compositing methods have been implemented; daily, decadal, and monthly composites over Europe and Northern Africa have been calculated for the year 2007, and the resulting data sets have been thoroughly evaluated according to six criteria. The median approach was selected as the best-performing compositing algorithm considering all the investigated aspects. However, the combination of the NDVI value and viewing and illumination angles as the criteria for the best-pixel selection proved to be a promising approach, too. The generated NDVI time series, currently ranging from 1981–2018, shows a consistent behavior and close agreement to the standard MODIS NDVI product. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is a key parameter in precision agriculture. It has been used globally since the 1970s as a proxy to monitor crop growth and correlates to the crop coefficient (Kc), leaf area index (LAI), crop cover, and more. Yet, it is susceptible to clouds and other atmospheric conditions that might alter the crop's real NDVI value. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), on the other hand, can penetrate clouds and is hardly affected by atmospheric conditions, but it is sensitive to the physical structure of the crop and therefore does not give a direct indication of the NDVI. Several SAR indices and methods have been suggested to estimate NDVIs via SAR; however, they tend to work for local spatial and temporal conditions and do not work well globally. This is because they are not flexible enough to capture the changing NDVI–SAR relationship throughout the crop-growing season. This study suggests a new method for converting Sentinel-1 to NDVIs for Agricultural Fields (SNAF) by utilizing a hyperlocal machine learning approach. This method generates multiple on-the-fly disposal field- and time-specific models for every available Sentinel-1 image across 2021. Each model learns the field-specific NDVI (from Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8) –SAR (Sentinel-1) relationship based on recent NDVI and SAR time series and consequently estimates the optimal NDVI value from the current SAR image. The SNAF was tested on 548 commercial fields from 18 countries with 28 crop types and, based on 6880 paired NDVI–SAR images, achieved an RMSE, bias, and R2 of 0.06, 0.00, and 0.92, respectively. The outcome of this study aspires to a persistent seamless stream of NDVI values, regardless of the atmospheric conditions, illumination, or local conditions, which can assist in agricultural decision making. Vegetation is the main component of the terrestrial Earth, and it plays an imperative role in carbon cycle regulation and surface water/energy exchange/balance. The coupled effects of climate change and anthropogenic forcing have undoubtfully impacted the vegetation cover in linear/non-linear manners. Considering the essential benefits of vegetation to the environment, it is vital to investigate the vegetation dynamics through spatially and temporally consistent workflows. In this regard, remote sensing, especially Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), has offered a reliable data source for vegetation monitoring and trend analysis. In this paper, two decades (2000 to 2020) of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) NDVI datasets (MOD13Q1) were used for vegetation trend analysis throughout Iran. First, the per-pixel annual NDVI dataset was prepared using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) by averaging all available NDVI values within the growing season and was then fed into the PolyTrend algorithm for linear/non-linear trend identification. In total, nearly 14 million pixels (44% of Iran) were subjected to trend analysis, and the results indicated a higher rate of greening than browning across the country. Regarding the trend types, linear was the dominant trend type with 14%, followed by concealed (11%), cubic (8%), and quadratic (2%), while 9% of the vegetation area remained stable (no trend). Both positive and negative directions were observed in all trend types, with the slope magnitudes ranging between −0.048 and 0.047 (NDVI units) per year. Later, precipitation and land cover datasets were employed to further investigate the vegetation dynamics. The correlation coefficient between precipitation and vegetation (NDVI) was 0.54 based on all corresponding observations (n = 1785). The comparison between vegetation and precipitation trends revealed matched trend directions in 60% of cases, suggesting the potential impact of precipitation dynamics on vegetation covers. Further incorporation of land cover data showed that grassland areas experienced significant dynamics with the highest proportion compared to other vegetation land cover types. Moreover, forest and cropland had the highest positive and negative trend direction proportions. Finally, independent (from trend analysis) sources were used to examine the vegetation dynamics (greening/browning) from other perspectives, confirming Iran's greening process and agreeing with the trend analysis results. Satellite-based normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series data are useful for monitoring the changes in vegetation ecosystems in the context of global climate change. However, most of the current NDVI products cannot effectively reconcile high spatial resolution and continuous observations in time. Here, to produce a global-scale, long-term, and high-resolution NDVI database, we developed a simple and new data downscaling approach. The downscaling algorithm considers the pixel-wise ratios of the coefficient of variation (CV) between the coarse- and fine-resolution NDVI data and relative changes in the NDVI against a baseline period. The algorithm successfully created a worldwide monthly NDVI database with 250 m resolution from 1982 to 2018 by translating the fine spatial information from MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data and the long-term temporal information from AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) data. We employed the evaluation indices of root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and Pearson's correlation coefficient (Pearson's R) to assess the accuracy of the downscaled data against the MODIS NDVI. Both the RMSE and MAE values at the regional and global scales are typically between 0 and 0.2, whereas the Pearson's R values are mostly above 0.7, which implies that the downscaled NDVI product is similar to the MODIS NDVI product. We then used the downscaled data to monitor the NDVI changes in different plant types and places with significant vegetation heterogeneity, as well as to investigate global vegetation trends over the last four decades. The Google Earth Engine platform was used for all the data downscaling processes, and here we provide a code for users to easily acquire data corresponding to any part of the world. The downscaled global-scale NDVI time series has high potential for the monitoring of the long-term temporal and spatial dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems under changing environments. The detection and attribution of vegetation dynamics in drylands is an important step for the development of effective adaptation and mitigation strategies to combat the challenges posed by human activities and climate change. However, due to the spatial heterogeneity and interactive influences of various factors, quantifying the contributions of driving forces on vegetation change remains challenging. In this study, using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as a proxy of vegetation growth status and coverage, we analyzed the temporal and spatial characteristics of the NDVI in China's Inner Mongolian grasslands using Theil–Sen slope statistics and Mann–Kendall trend test methods. In addition, using the GeoDetector method, a spatially-based statistical technique, we assessed the individual and interactive influences of natural factors and human activities on vegetation-NDVI change. The results show that the growing season average NDVI exhibited a fluctuating upward trend of 0.003 per year from 2000 to 2018. The areas with significant increases in NDVI (p < 0.05) accounted for 45.63% of the entire region, and they were mainly distributed in the eastern part of the Mu Us sandy land and the eastern areas of the Greater Khingan Range. The regions with a decline in the NDVI were mainly distributed in the central and western regions of the study area. The GeoDetector results revealed that both natural and human factors had significant impacts on changes in the NDVI (p < 0.001). Precipitation, livestock density, wind speed, and population density were the dominant factors affecting NDVI changes in the Inner Mongolian grasslands, explaining more than 15% of the variability, while the contributions of the two topography factors (terrain slope and slope aspect) were relatively low (less than 2%). Furthermore, NDVI changes responded to the changes in the level of specific influencing factors in a nonlinear way, and the interaction of two factors enhanced the effect of each singular factor. The interaction between precipitation and temperature was the highest among all factors, accounting for 39.3% of NDVI variations. Findings from our study may aid policymakers in better understanding the relative importance of various factors and the impacts of the interactions between factors on vegetation change, which has important implications for preventing and mitigating land degradation and achieving sustainable pasture use in dryland ecosystems. In recent decades, frequent compound dry and hot events have posed a great threat to humans and the ecological environment, especially in Inner Mongolia, which has arid and semi-arid characteristics. In this study, monthly temperature and precipitation data from 115 meteorological stations in Inner Mongolia from 1982 to 2020 were used to establish a standardized dry and hot index (SDHI). Theil–Sen median trend analysis, Mann–Kendall test, partial correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression models were used to characterize the changes in compound dry and hot events and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from 1982 to 2020, and the relationship between the SDHI and NDVI was quantitatively evaluated. The results showed that the overall SDHI values in Inner Mongolia showed a significant decrease at a rate of 0.03/year from 1982 to 2020, indicating an increase in the severity of compound dry and hot events. NDVI values showed a significant increasing trend and NDVI showed mutated 2001. Among the grassland vegetation types, SDHI and NDVI trends were more significant in forests, and meadow steppe, desert steppe, and desert were more susceptible to compound dry and hot events, and forests had the greatest severity of compound dry and hot events. The results of the partial correlation analysis showed that the average value of the partial correlation coefficient between the SDHI and NDVI was 0.68, and the area of positive correlation was 84.13%. Spatially, it showed strong response characteristics in the middle and gradual weakening towards the east and west sides. The correlation between NDVI and climatic conditions varied greatly in different vegetation areas. The forest area is most sensitive to the influence of temperature, and the desert steppe area is most affected by compound dry and hot events. The overall vegetation growth in Inner Mongolia was most affected by temperature conditions, followed by compound dry and hot conditions, and the influence of drought conditions was the least significant. The results of the relative importance analysis confirmed this. The research results provide a more detailed understanding of compound dry and hot events in arid and semi-arid regions and useful insights and support for ecological protection. The leaf area index (LAI) is a direct indicator of vegetation activity, and its relationship with the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has been investigated in many research studies. Remote sensing makes available NDVI data over large areas, and researchers developed specific equations to derive the LAI from the NDVI, using empirical relationships grounded in field data collection. We conducted a literature search using "NDVI" AND "LAI" AND "crop" as the search string, focusing on the period 2017–2021. We reviewed the available equations to convert the NDVI into the LAI, aiming at (i) exploring the fields of application of an NDVI-based LAI, (ii) characterizing the mathematical relationships between the NDVI and LAI in the available equations, (iii) creating a software library with the retrieved methods, and (iv) releasing a publicly available software as a service, implementing these equations to foster their reuse by third parties. The literature search yielded 92 articles since 2017, where 139 equations were proposed. We analyzed the mathematical form of both the single equations and ensembles of the NDVI to LAI conversion methods, specific for crop, sensor, and biome. The characterization of the functions highlighted two main constraints when developing an NDVI-LAI conversion function: environmental conditions (i.e., water and light resource, land cover, and climate) and the availability of recurring data during the growing season. We found that the trend of an NDVI-LAI function is usually driven by the ecosystem water availability for the crop rather than by the crop type itself, as well as by the data availability; the data should be adequate in terms of the sample size and temporal resolution for reliably representing the phenomenon under investigation. Our study demonstrated that the choice of the NDVI-LAI equation (or ensemble of equations) should be driven by the trade-off between the scale of the investigation and data availability. The implementation of an extensible and reusable software library publicly queryable via API represents a valid mean to assist researchers in choosing the most suitable equations to perform an NDVI-LAI conversion. Vegetation, a key intermediary linking water, the atmosphere, and the ground, performs extremely important functions in nature and for our existence. Although satellite-based remote-sensing technologies have become important for monitoring vegetation dynamics, selecting the correct remote-sensing vegetation indicator has become paramount for such investigations. This study investigated the consistencies between a photosynthetic activity index (the solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) indicator) and the traditional vegetation index (the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)) among different land-cover types and in different seasons and explored the applicability of NDVI and SIF in different cases by comparing their performances in gross primary production (GPP) and grain-yield-monitoring applications. The vegetation cover and photosynthesis showed decreasing trends, which were mainly concentrated in northern Xinjiang and part of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau; a decreasing trend was also identified in a small part of Northeast China. The correlations between NDVI and SIF were strong for all land-cover types except evergreen needleleaf forests and evergreen broadleaf forests. Compared with NDVI, SIF had some advantages when monitoring the GPP and grain yields among different land-cover types. For example, SIF could capture the effects of drought on GPP and grain yields better than NDVI. To summarize, as the temporal extent of the available SIF data is extended, SIF will certainly perform increasingly wide applications in agricultural-management research that is closely related to GPP and grain-yield monitoring. Adjusting nitrogen fertilization to the nutritional requirements of crops is one of the major challenges of modern agriculture. The amount of N needed is mainly determined by crop yield, so yield maps can be used to optimize N fertilization. As the adoption of yield monitors is low among farmers, implementation of this approach is still low. However, as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is related to grain yield, the main objective of this work was to identify at which wheat growth stage a moderate agreement between NDVI and yield is obtained. For this, NDVI images obtained from Sentinel-2 were used, and the evolution of concordance was analyzed in 13 classified parcels of wheat employing the Kappa index (KI). In one-third of the plots, a moderate agreement (KI > 0.4) was reached before the stem elongation growth phase (when the last N application was made). In another one-third, moderate agreement was reached later, in more advanced development stages. For the cases in which this agreement did not exist, an attempt was made to find the causes. The MANOVA and subsequent descriptive discriminant analysis (DDA) showed that the NDVI dates that contribute the most to the differentiation between plots with and without agreement between grain yield maps and NDVI images were those corresponding to tillering. The sum of the NDVI values of the tillering phase was significantly lower in the group of plots that did not show concordance. Sentinel-2 imagery was successful on 66% of plots for delineation of management zones after GS 30, and thus is useful for producing fertilization maps for the upcoming season. Beijing's One Million Mu Plain Afforestation Project involves planting large areas with the exotic North American tree species Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh (ash). As an exotic tree species, ash is very vulnerable to infestations by the emerald ash borer (EAB), a native Chinese wood borer pest. In the early stage of an EAB infestation, attacked trees show no obvious sign. Once the stand has reached the late damage stage, death occurs rapidly. Therefore, there is a need for efficient early detection methods of EAB stress over large areas. The combination of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based hyperspectral imaging (HI) with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a promising practical approach for monitoring insect disturbance. In this study, we identified the most useful narrow-band spectral HI data and 3D LiDAR data for the early detection of EAB stress in ash. UAV-HI data of different infested stages (healthy, light, moderate and severe) of EAB in the 400–1000 nm range were collected from ash canopies and were processed by Partial Least Squares–Variable Importance in Projection (PLS-VIP) to identify the maximally sensitive bands. Band R678 nm had the highest PLS-VIP scores and the most robust classification ability. We combined this band with band R776 nm to develop an innovative normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI(776,678)) to estimate EAB stress. LiDAR data were used to segment individual trees and supplement the HI data. The new NDVI(776,678) identified different stages of EAB stress, with a producer's accuracy of 90% for healthy trees, 76.25% for light infestation, 58.33% for moderate infestation, and 100% for severe infestation, with an overall accuracy of 82.90% when combined with UAV-HI and LiDAR. The frequency of extreme climate events has increased resulting in major changes to vegetation in arid and semi-arid areas. We selected 12 extreme climate indices and used trend analysis and multiple linear regression models to analyze extreme climate trends in steppe areas of Inner Mongolia and their impact on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). From 1998 to 2017, the NDVI of the Inner Mongolia steppe increased overall; however, there was a small area of decrease. Extreme climate indices related to warming exhibited increasing trends, particularly in the desert steppe. Although the extreme precipitation index did not change significantly overall, it increased in the northeastern and southwestern regions of the study area and decreased in the central region. The established model showed that the extreme climate explained the highest NDVI variation in desert steppe (R2 = 0.413), followed by typical steppe (R2 = 0.229), and meadow steppe (R2 = 0.109). In desert steppe, TX90P (warm days index) had the greatest impact; in typical steppe, R10 (number of heavy precipitation days index) had the greatest impact; in meadow steppe, R95P (very wet days index) had the greatest impact. This study offered new insights into dynamic vegetation changes in steppe areas of Inner Mongolia and provided a scientific basis for implementing environmental protection strategies. Geomorphic classification of large rivers identifies morphological patterns, as a foundation for estimating biogeochemical and ecological processes. In order to support the modelling of in-channel nutrient retention or export, the classification of geomorphic units (GUs) was done in the Padma River, Bangladesh, a large and geomorphically-complex lowland river. GUs were classified using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) four times over a year, so as to cover the seasonal variation of water flows. GUs were categorized as primary and secondary channels (C & S); longitudinal bar (L); transverse bar (T); side bar (SB); unvegetated bank (EK); dry channel (ED); island (VI); and water depression (WD). All types of GUs were observed over the four distinct annual seasons, except ED, which was absent during the high flow, monsoon season. Seasonal variation of the surface area of GUs and discharge showed an inverse relation between discharge and exposed surface areas of VI, L, T, and SB. Nutrients mainly enter the river system through water and sediments, and during monsoon, the maximum portion of emergent GUs were submerged. Based on the assumption that nutrient retention is enhanced in the seasonally inundated portions of GUs, nutrient retention-/export-relevant geomorphic units (NREGUs) were identified. Seasonal variation in the area of NREGUs was similar to that of GUs. The mean NDVI values of the main identified NREGUs were different. The variation of NDVI values among seasons in these NREGUs resulted from changes of vegetation cover and type. The variation also occurred due to alteration of the surface area of GUs in different seasons. On 26 August 2020, a devastating flash flood struck Charikar city, Parwan province, Afghanistan, causing building damage and killing hundreds of people. Rapid identification and frequent mapping of the flood-affected area are essential for post-disaster support and rapid response. In this study, we used Google Earth Engine to evaluate the performance of automatic detection of flood-inundated areas by using the spectral index technique based on the relative difference in the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (rdNDVI) between pre- and post-event Sentinel-2 images. We found that rdNDVI was effective in detecting the land cover change from a flash flood event in a semi-arid region in Afghanistan and in providing a reasonable inundation map. The result of the rdNDVI-based flood detection was compared and assessed by visual interpretation of changes in the satellite images. The overall accuracy obtained from the confusion matrix was 88%, and the kappa coefficient was 0.75, indicating that the methodology is recommendable for rapid assessment and mapping of future flash flood events. We also evaluated the NDVIs' changes over the course of two years after the event to monitor the recovery process of the affected area. Cropland mapping using remote sensing data is the basis for effective crop monitoring, crop rotation control, and the detection of irrational land use. Classification using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series from multi-year data requires additional time costs, especially when sentinel data are sparse. Approximation by nonlinear functions was proposed to solve this problem. Time series of weekly NDVI composites were plotted using multispectral Sentinel-2 (Level-2A) images at a resolution of 10 m for sites in Khabarovsk District from April to October in the years 2021 and 2022. Missing values due to the lack of suitable images for analysis were recovered using cubic polynomial, Fourier series, and double sinusoidal function approximation. The classes that were considered included crops, namely, soybean, buckwheat, oat, and perennial grasses, and fallow. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of each class fitting was calculated. It was found that Fourier series fitting showed the highest accuracy, with a mean error of 8.2%. Different classifiers, such as the support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and gradient boosting (GB), were comparatively evaluated. The overall accuracy (OA) for the site pixels during the cross-validation (Fourier series restored) was 67.3%, 87.2%, and 85.9% for the SVM, RF, and GB classifiers, respectively. Thus, it was established that the best result in terms of combined accuracy, performance, and limitations in cropland mapping was achieved by composite construction using Fourier series and machine learning using GB. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) serves as a crucial ecological barrier in Asia, with vegetation playing a pivotal role in the terrestrial ecosystem by facilitating energy exchange between the land and atmosphere, regulating climate, and participating in the carbon cycle. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of surface vegetation on the TP in the growing season during 1982–2018 using satellite remote sensing data obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD). We investigate how these characteristics respond to climate change under different warming and humidification conditions across the TP. The main conclusions are as follows. (1) The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values on the TP exhibit a gradual decrease from southeast to northwest during the growing season. There is a significant overall increasing trend at a climate tendency rate of 0.01·decade−1 (p < 0.01) from 1982 to 2018, characterized by a notable mutation of around 1998. Over the past 37 years, a polarized trend of vegetation was observed on the TP, with notable improvement in its central and eastern regions. However, there has been noticeable degradation in northwestern TP, specifically within the Kunlun Mountains and Qaidam Basin. (2) The climate of the TP demonstrates distinct regional disparities in terms of warming and humidification characteristics before and after 1998. During the period of 1982–1998 (1998–2018), the temperature increase is primarily concentrated in the northern (southern) TP, while precipitation increase is mainly observed in the southern and northwestern (northeastern and western) regions of the TP. (3) The responses of surface vegetation to climate factors exhibit significant variations across diverse climatic backgrounds. It is noteworthy that moisture conditions have a substantial impact on the response of vegetation to air temperature on the TP. During the period of 1982–1998, under relatively insufficient moisture conditions, a positive correlation was observed between air temperature and surface vegetation in the humid and semi-humid regions of the southeastern TP, while a negative correlation was found in the semi-arid regions of northeastern TP. During 1998–2018, as moisture conditions became relatively sufficient, surface vegetation in the semi-arid regions showed positive correlations with both temperature and precipitation. However, surface vegetation in the humid and semi-humid regions exhibited a significant negative correlation with precipitation. During this period, the synergistic effects between warm and humid climates in the semi-arid regions of northeastern TP and warm and dry climates in humid and semi-humid regions of southeastern TP substantially enhanced surface vegetation on the TP. Furthermore, our results indicate that thermal factors (air temperature) primarily influence variations in surface vegetation within the high-altitude arid region of the TP. During 1998–2018, a significant cooling trend was observed in the northwestern TP, which could potentially account for the degradation of surface vegetation in the Kunlun Mountains. The second-largest wildfire in the history of South Korea occurred in 2022 due to strong winds and dry climates. Quantitative evaluation of soil erosion is necessary to prevent subsequent sediment disasters in the wildfire areas. The erosion rates in two watersheds affected by the wildfires were assessed using the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE), a globally popular model, and the soil erosion model for mountain areas (SEMMA) developed in South Korea. The GIS-based models required the integration of maps of the erosivity factor, erodibility factor, length and slope factors, and cover and practice factors. The rainfall erosivity factor considering the 50-year and 80-year probability of rainfall increased from coastal to mountainous areas. For the LS factors, the traditional version (TV) was initially used, and the flow accumulation version (FAV) was additionally considered. The cover factor of the RUSLE and the vegetation index of the SEMMA were calculated using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) extracted from Sentinel-2 images acquired before and after the wildfire. After one year following the wildfire, the NDVI increased compared to during the year of the wildfire. Although the RUSLE considered a low value of the P factor (0.28) for post-fire watersheds, it overestimated the erosion rate by from 3 to 15 times compared to the SEMMA. The erosion risk with the SEMMA simulation decreased with the elapsed time via the vegetation recovery and stabilization of topsoil. While the FAV of RUSLE oversimulated by 1.65~2.31 times compared to the TV, the FAV of SEMMA only increased by 1.03~1.19 times compared to the TV. The heavy rainfall of the 50-year probability due to Typhoon Khanun in 2023 generated rill and gully erosions, landslides, and sediment damage in the post-fire watershed on forest roads for transmission tower construction or logging. Both the RUSLE and SEMMA for the TV and FAV predicted high erosion risks for disturbed hillslopes; however, their accuracy varied in terms of the intensity and extent. According to a comparative analysis of the simulation results of the two models and the actual erosion situations caused by heavy rain, the FAV of SEMMA was found to simulate spatial heterogeneity and a reasonable erosion rate. The accurate evaluation of shifts in vegetation phenology is essential for understanding of vegetation responses to climate change. Remote-sensing vegetation index (VI) products with multi-day scales have been widely used for phenology trend estimation. VI composites should be interpolated into a daily scale for extracting phenological metrics, which may not fully capture daily vegetation growth, and how this process affects phenology trend estimation remains unclear. In this study, we chose 120 sites over four vegetation types in the mid-high latitudes of the northern hemisphere, and then a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MCD43A4 daily surface reflectance data was used to generate a daily normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) dataset in addition to an 8-day and a 16-day NDVI composite datasets from 2001 to 2019. Five different time interpolation methods (piecewise logistic function, asymmetric Gaussian function, polynomial curve function, linear interpolation, and spline interpolation) and three phenology extraction methods were applied to extract data from the start of the growing season and the end of the growing season. We compared the trends estimated from daily NDVI data with those from NDVI composites among (1) different interpolation methods; (2) different vegetation types; and (3) different combinations of time interpolation methods and phenology extraction methods. We also analyzed the differences between the trends estimated from the 8-day and 16-day composite datasets. Our results indicated that none of the interpolation methods had significant effects on trend estimation over all sites, but the discrepancies caused by time interpolation could not be ignored. Among vegetation types with apparent seasonal changes such as deciduous broadleaf forest, time interpolation had significant effects on phenology trend estimation but almost had no significant effects among vegetation types with weak seasonal changes such as evergreen needleleaf forests. In addition, trends that were estimated based on the same interpolation method but different extraction methods were not consistent in showing significant (insignificant) differences, implying that the selection of extraction methods also affected trend estimation. Compared with other vegetation types, there were generally fewer discrepancies between trends estimated from the 8-day and 16-day dataset in evergreen needleleaf forest and open shrubland, which indicated that the dataset with a lower temporal resolution (16-day) can be applied. Vegetation on the Southwestern Tibetan Plateau (SWTP) is critical to ensuring ecological security and promoting regional economic and social development. Here, we explored the relationship between topographic factors (elevation, slope, and aspect) and the spatial patterns in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the SWTP over the past 20 years. The results found that the NDVI in the SWTP was primarily influenced by elevation and slope. The regions with significant variations in NDVI were concentrated between 4500 m to 5500 m and slopes ranging from 0° to 15°. Although the influence of aspect on NDVI was small, there was a decreasing trend in NDVI on sunny slopes and an increasing trend on shady slopes. Dominant topographic conditions were identified by considering 230 different combinations of elevation, slope, and aspect. The combination of topographic parameters indicated stronger patterns in NDVI variability, notably within sections of 0°–25°slopes and below 5000 m elevation. These findings highlight the relevance of topography, notably slope and aspect, for vegetation in alpine settings. The information gathered from this study about the prevailing topographic distribution and vegetation growth state in the SWTP can help with future ecological restoration and conservation efforts in the Tibetan Plateau and other comparable regions worldwide. Vegetation is one of the most important indicators of climate change, as it can show regional change in the environment. Vegetation health is affected by various factors, including drought, which has cumulative and time-lag effects on vegetation response. However, the cumulative and time-lag effects of drought on different terrestrial vegetation in China are still unclear. To address this issue, this study examined the cumulative and time-lag effects of drought on vegetation from 2001 to 2020 using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) in the Global SPEI database and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in MOD13A3. Based on Sen-Median trend analysis and the Mann–Kendall test, the change trend and significance of the NDVI from 2001 to 2020 were explored. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between the SPEI and NDVI at each cumulative scale and time-lag scale and to further analyze the cumulative and time-lag effects of drought on vegetation. The results show the following: (1) The NDVI value increased at a rate of 0.019/10 years, and the increased area of the NDVI accounted for 80.53% of mainland China, with a spatial trend of low values in the west and high values in the east. (2) The average SPEI cumulative time scale most relevant to the NDVI was 7.3 months, and the cumulative effect demonstrated a high correlation at the scale of 9–12 months and revealed different distributions in different areas. The cumulative effect was widely distributed at the 9-month scale, followed by the 12-month scale. The correlation coefficients of cumulative effects between the SPEI and NDVI for cropland, woodland and grassland peaked at 9 months. (3) The average SPEI time-lag scale for the NDVI was 6.9 months, and the time-lag effect had the highest correlation coefficient at the 7-month scale. The strongest time-lag effect for cropland and grassland was seen at 7 months, while the strongest time-lag effect for woodland was seen at 6 months. Woodland had a lower time-lag effect than grassland at different scales. Given rapid global urban development, increases to impervious surfaces, urban population growth, building construction, and energy consumption result in the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon. However, the spatial extent of UHIs is not clearly mapped in many UHI studies based on a remote sensing approach. Therefore, we developed a method to extract the spatial extent of the UHI during the period from 2000 to 2021 in Nanjing, China, and explored the impact of urban two- and three-dimensional expansion on UHI spatial extent and UHI intensity. After cropland effects (i.e., bare soil) were eliminated, our proposed method combines the Getis-Ord-Gi* and the standard deviation of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI STD) to extract the UHI area from Landsat 5 and Landsat 8 images using land surface temperature (LST) spatial autocorrelation characteristics and the seasonal variation of vegetation. Our results show the following: (1) Bare farmland has a large influence on the extraction results of UHI—combined with the seasonal variation characteristics of NDVI STD, the impact of bare soil on UHI extraction was highly reduced, strongly improving the accuracy of UHI extraction. (2) The dynamics of the UHI area are consistent with the changes in the built-up area in Nanjing at both spatial and temporal scales, but with the increase of the urban green ratio, the UHI area of mature urban areas trends to decrease due to the cooling effect of green space. (3) The accumulation of population and GDP promote the vertical expansion of urban buildings. Rapid and accurate monitoring of spatial distribution patterns of winter wheat over a long period is of great significance for crop yield prediction and farmland water consumption estimation. However, weather conditions and relatively long revisit cycles often result in an insufficient number of continuous medium-high resolution images over large areas for many years. In addition, the cropland pattern changes frequently in the fallow rotation area. A novel rapid mapping model for winter wheat based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time-series coefficient of variation (NDVI_COVfp) and peak-slope difference index (PSDI) is proposed in this study. NDVI_COVfp uses the time-series index volatility to distinguish cultivated land from background land-cover types. PSDI combines the key growth stages of winter wheat phenology and special bimodal characteristics, substantially reducing the impact of abandoned land and other crops. Taking the Heilonggang as an example, this study carried out a rapid mapping of winter wheat for four consecutive years (2014–2017), and compared the proposed COV_PSDI with two state-of-the-art methods and traditional methods (the Spectral Angle Mapping (SAM) and the Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique Algorithm (ISODATA)). The verification results revealed that the COV_PSDI model improved the overall accuracy (94.10%) by 4% compared with the two state-of-art methods (90.80%, 89.00%) and two traditional methods (90.70%, 87.70%). User accuracy was the highest, which was 93.74%. Compared with the other four methods, the percentage error (PE) of COV_PSDI for four years was the lowest in the same year, with the minimum variation range of PE being 1.6–3.6%. The other methods resulted in serious overestimation. This demonstrated the effectiveness and stability of the method proposed in the rapid and accurate extraction of winter wheat in a large area of fallow crop rotation region. This study explored the long-term trends and breakpoints of vegetation, rainfall, and temperature in Taiwan from overall and regional perspectives in terms of vertical differences from 1982 to 2012. With time-series Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data and Taiwan Climate Change Estimate and Information Platform (TCCIP) gridded monthly climatic data, their vertical dynamics were investigated by employing the Breaks for Additive Seasonal and Trend (BFAST) algorithm, Pearson's correlation analysis, and the Durbin–Watson test. The vertical differences in NDVI values presented three breakpoints and a consistent trend from positive (1982 to 1989) to negative at varied rates, and then gradually increased after 2000. In addition, a positive rainfall trend was discovered. Average and maximum temperature had similar increasing trends, while minimum temperature showed variations, especially at higher altitudes. In terms of regional variations, the vegetation growth was stable in the north but worse in the central region. Higher elevations revealed larger variations in the NDVI and temperature datasets. NDVI, along with average and minimum temperature, showed their largest changes earlier in higher altitude areas. Specifically, the increasing minimum temperature direction was more prominent in the mid-to-high-altitude areas in the eastern and central regions. Seasonal variations were observed for each region. The difference between the dry and wet seasons is becoming larger, with the smallest difference in the northern region and the largest difference in the southern region. Taiwan's NDVI and climatic factors have a significant negative correlation (p < 0.05), but the maximum and minimum temperatures have significant positive effects at low altitudes below 500 m. The northern and central regions reveal similar responses, while the south and east display different feedbacks. The results illuminate climate change evidence from assessment of the long-term dynamics of vegetation and climatic factors, providing valuable references for establishing correspondent climate-adaptive strategies in Taiwan. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is an important agricultural parameter that is closely correlated with crop growth. In this study, a novel method combining the dynamic time warping (DTW) model and the long short-term memory (LSTM) deep recurrent neural network model was developed to predict the short and medium-term winter wheat NDVI. LSTM is well-suited for modelling long-term dependencies, but this method may be susceptible to overfitting. In contrast, DTW possesses good predictive ability and is less susceptible to overfitting. Therefore, by utilizing the combination of these two models, the prediction error caused by overfitting is reduced, thus improving the final prediction accuracy. The combined method proposed here utilizes the historical MODIS time series data with an 8-day time resolution from 2015 to 2020. First, fast Fourier transform (FFT) is used to decompose the time series into two parts. The first part reflects the inter-annual and seasonal variation characteristics of winter wheat NDVI, and the DTW model is applied for prediction. The second part reflects the short-term change characteristics of winter wheat NDVI, and the LSTM model is applied for prediction. Next, the results from both models are combined to produce a final prediction. A case study in Hebei Province that predicts the NDVI of winter wheat at five prediction horizons in the future indicates that the DTW–LSTM model proposed here outperforms the LSTM model according to multiple evaluation indicators. Crop yield forecasting is performed monthly during the growing season by the United States Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service. The underpinnings are long-established probability surveys reliant on farmers' feedback in parallel with biophysical measurements. Over the last decade though, satellite imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) has been used to corroborate the survey information. This is facilitated through the Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies/Global Agricultural Monitoring system, which provides open access to pertinent real-time normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data. Hence, two relatively straightforward MODIS-based modeling methods are employed operationally. The first model constitutes mid-season timing based on the maximum peak NDVI value, while the second is reflective of late-season timing by integrating accumulated NDVI over a threshold value. Corn model results nationally show the peak NDVI method provides a R2 of 0.88 and a coefficient of variation (CV) of 3.5%. The accumulated method, using an optimally derived 0.58 NDVI threshold, improves the performance to 0.93 and 2.7%, respectively. Both these models outperform simple trend analysis, which is 0.48 and 7.4%, correspondingly. For soybeans the R2 results of the peak NDVI model are 0.62, and 0.73 for the accumulated using a 0.56 threshold. CVs are 6.8% and 5.7%, respectively. Spring wheat's R2 performance with the accumulated NDVI model is 0.60 but just 0.40 with peak NDVI. The soybean and spring wheat models perform similarly to trend analysis. Winter wheat and upland cotton show poor model performance, regardless of method. Ultimately, corn yield forecasting derived from MODIS imagery is robust, and there are circumstances when forecasts for soybeans and spring wheat have merit too. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents a new method that mitigates biases between the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from geostationary (GEO) and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites for Earth observation. The method geometrically and spectrally transforms GEO NDVI into LEO-compatible GEO NDVI, in which GEO's off-nadir view is adjusted to a near-nadir view. First, a GEO-to-LEO NDVI transformation equation is derived using a linear mixture model of anisotropic vegetation and nonvegetation endmember spectra. The coefficients of the derived equation are a function of the endmember spectra of two sensors. The resultant equation is used to develop an NDVI transformation method in which endmember spectra are automatically computed from each sensor's data independently and are combined to compute the coefficients. Importantly, this method does not require regression analysis using two-sensor NDVI data. The method is demonstrated using Himawari 8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) data at off-nadir view and Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data at near-nadir view in middle latitude. The results show that the magnitudes of the averaged NDVI biases between AHI and MODIS for five test sites (0.016–0.026) were reduced after the transformation (<0.01). These findings indicate that the proposed method facilitates the combination of GEO and LEO NDVIs to provide NDVIs with smaller differences, except for cases in which the fraction of vegetation cover (FVC) depends on the view angle. Further investigations should be conducted to reduce the remaining errors in the transformation and to explore the feasibility of using the proposed method to predict near-real-time and near-nadir LEO vegetation index time series using GEO data. Dust events in Northeast Asia have several adverse effects on human health, agricultural land, infrastructure, and transport. Wind speed is the most important factor in determining the total dust emission at the land surface; however, various land-surface conditions must be considered as well. Recently, the Korea Meteorological Administration updated the dust emission reduction factor (RF) in the Asian Dust Aerosol Model 3 (ADAM3) using data from the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). We evaluated the improvements of ADAM3 according to soil types. We incorporated new RF formulations in the evaluation based on real-time MODIS NDVI data obtained over the Asian dust source regions in northern China during spring 2017. This incorporation improved the simulation performance of ADAM3 for the PM10 mass concentration in Inner Mongolia and Manchuria for all soil types, except Gobi. The ADAM3 skill scores for sand, loess, and mixed types in a 24 h forecast increased by 6.6%, 20.4%, and 13.3%, respectively, compared with those in forecasts employing the monthly RF based on the NDVI data. As surface conditions in the dust source regions continually change, incorporating real-time vegetation data is critical to improving performance of dust forecast models such as ADAM3. Wide mode SAR images have an apparent incidence angle effect. The existing incident angle normalization methods assume that the relationship between the incident angle (θ) and the backscattering coefficient (σPQ) does not change with the growth stage of crops, which is in conflict with the real-life situation. Therefore, the normalization results of σPQ based on these existing methods will affect the accuracy of object classification, target recognition, and land surface parameter inversion. Here, the change in θ-σPQ relationship was investigated based on time-series (April to October) σPQ of maize canopies in northeast China, and a dynamic method based on normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was developed to normalize the effect of θ on σPQ. Through the accuracy evaluation, the following conclusions are obtained: (1) the dependence (referring to N) of Sentinel 1 C-band σPQ on θ varies with maize NDVI. In addition, the value of N changed from 9.35 to 0.66 at VV polarization from bare soil to biomass peak, and from 6.26 to 0.99 at VH polarization; (2) a dynamic method was proposed to quantify the change of N based on its strong correlation with NDVI, indicated by R2 of 0.82 and 0.80 for VV and VH polarization, respectively; and (3) the overall root mean square error of normalized σPQ based on the newly-developed dynamic method is 0.51 dB, and this accuracy outperforms the original first-order cosine method (1.37 dB) and cosine square law method (1.08 dB) by about 63% and 53% on the whole. The bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is crucial in determining the quantity of reflected light on the earth's surface as a function of solar and view angles (i.e., azimuth and zenith angles). The Vegetation and ENvironment monitoring Micro-Satellite (VENµS) provides a unique opportunity to acquire data from the same site, with the same sensor, with almost constant solar and view zenith angles from two (or more) view azimuth angles. The present study was aimed at exploring the view angles' effect on the stability of the values of albedo and of two vegetation indices (VIs): the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the red-edge inflection point (REIP). These products were calculated over three polygons representing urban and cultivated areas in April, June, and September 2018, under a minimal time difference of less than two minutes. Arithmetic differences of VIs and a change vector analysis (CVA) were performed. The results show that in urban areas, there was no difference between the VIs, whereas in the well-developed field crop canopy, the REIP was less affected by the view azimuth angle than the NDVI. Results suggest that REIP is a more appropriate index than NDVI for field crop studies and monitoring. Spectral unmixing remains the most popular method for estimating the composition of mixed pixels. However, the spectral-based unmixing method cannot easily distinguish vegetation with similar spectral characteristics (e.g., different forest tree species). Furthermore, in large areas with significant heterogeneity, extracting a large number of pure endmember samples is challenging. Here, we implement a fractional evergreen forest cover-self-adaptive parameter (FEVC-SAP) approach to measure FEVC at the regional scale from continuous intra-year time-series normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values derived from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery acquired over southern China, an area with a complex mixture of temperate, subtropical, and tropical climates containing evergreen and deciduous forests. Considering the cover of evergreen forest as a fraction of total forest (evergreen forest plus non-evergreen forest), the dimidiate pixel model combined with an index of evergreen forest phenological characteristics (NDVIann-min: intra-annual minimum NDVI value) was used to distinguish between evergreen and non-evergreen forests within a pixel. Due to spatial heterogeneity, the optimal model parameters differ among regions. By dividing the study area into grids, our method converts image spectral information into gray level information and uses the Otsu threshold segmentation method to simulate the appropriate parameters for each grid for adaptive acquisition of FEVC parameters. Mapping accuracy was assessed at the pixel and sub-pixel scales. At the pixel scale, a confusion matrix was constructed with higher overall accuracy (87.5%) of evergreen forest classification than existing land cover products, including GLC 30 and MOD12. At the sub-pixel scale, a strong linear correlation was found between the cover fraction predicted by our method and the reference cover fraction obtained from GF-1 images (R2 = 0.86). Compared to other methods, the FEVC-SAP had a lower estimation deviation (root mean square error = 8.6%). Moreover, the proposed method had greater estimation accuracy in densely than sparsely forested areas. The spatiotemporal evolution of vegetation and its influencing factors can be used to explore the relationships among vegetation, climate change, and human activities, which are of great importance for guiding scientific management of regional ecological environments. In recent years, remote sensing technology has been widely used in dynamic monitoring of vegetation. In this study, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and standardized precipitation–evapotranspiration index (SPEI) from 1998 to 2017 were used to study the spatiotemporal variation of NDVI in China. The influences of climate change and human activities on NDVI variation were investigated based on the Mann–Kendall test, correlation analysis, and other methods. The results show that the growth rate of NDVI in China was 0.003 year−1. Regions with improved and degraded vegetation accounted for 71.02% and 22.97% of the national territorial area, respectively. The SPEI decreased in 60.08% of the area and exhibited an insignificant drought trend overall. Human activities affected the vegetation cover in the directions of both destruction and restoration. As the elevation and slope increased, the correlation between NDVI and SPEI gradually increased, whereas the impact of human activities on vegetation decreased. Climate warming hampers grassland growth, particularly in dryland regions. To preserve robust grassland growth and ensure the resilience of grassland in these arid areas, a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between vegetation and climate is imperative. However, existing studies often analyze climate–vegetation interactions using concurrent vegetation indices and meteorological data, neglecting time-lagged influences from various determinants. To address this void, we employed the random forest machine learning method to predict the grassland NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) in Asian drylands (including five central Asia countries, the Republic of Mongolia, and Parts of China) from 2001 to 2020, incorporating time-lag influences. We evaluated the prediction model's performance using three indexes, namely the coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). The results underscore the superiority of the model incorporating time-lag influences, demonstrating its enhanced capability to capture the grassland NDVI in Asian drylands (R2 ≥ 0.915, RMSE ≤ 0.033, MAE ≤ 0.019). Conversely, the model without time-lag influences exhibited relatively poor performance, notably inferior to the time-lag-inclusive model. The latter result aligns closely with remote sensing observations and more accurately reproduces the spatial distributions of the grassland NDVI in Asian drylands. Over the study period, the grassland NDVI in Asian drylands exhibited a weak decreasing trend, primarily concentrated in the western region. Notably, key factors influencing the grassland NDVI included the average grassland NDVI in the previous month, total precipitation in the current month, and average soil moisture in the previous month. This study not only pioneers a novel approach to predicting grassland growth but also contributes valuable insights for formulating sustainable strategies to preserve the integrity of grassland ecosystems. As a by-product of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR, InSAR) technique, interferometric coherence is a measure of the decorrelation noise for InSAR observation, where the lower the coherence value, the more serious the decorrelation noise. In the densely vegetated area, the coherence value could be too low to obtain any valuable signals, leading to the degradation of InSAR performance and the possible waste of expensive SAR data. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) value is a measure of the vegetation coverage and can be estimated from the freely available optical satellite images. In this paper, a multi-stage model is established to quantitatively estimate the decorrelation noise for vegetable areas based on Landsat-derived NDVI prior to the acquisition of SAR data. The modeling process is being investigated with the L-band ALOS-1/PALSAR-1 data and the Landsat-5 optical data acquired in the Meitanba area of Hunan Province, China. Furthermore, the reliability of the established model is verified in the Longhui area, which is situated near the Meitanba area. The results demonstrate that the established model can quantitatively estimate InSAR decorrelation associated with the vegetation coverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
