As drought vulnerability assessment is fundamental to risk management, it is urgent to develop scientific and reasonable assessment models to determine such vulnerability. A vulnerability curve is the key to risk assessment of various disasters, connecting analysis of hazard and risk. To date, the research on vulnerability curves of earthquakes, floods and typhoons is relatively mature. However, there are few studies on the drought vulnerability curve, and its application value needs to be further confirmed and popularized. In this study, on the basis of collecting historical disaster data from 52 drought events in China from 2009 to 2013, three drought remote sensing indexes were selected as disaster-causing factors; the affected population was selected to reflect the overall disaster situation, and five typical regional drought vulnerability curves were constructed. The results showed that (1) in general, according to the statistics of probability distribution, most of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the temperature vegetation drought index (TVDI) variance ratios were concentrated between 0 and ~0.15, and most of the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) variance ratios were concentrated between 0.15 and ~0.6. From a regional perspective, the NDVI and EVI variance ratio values of the northwest inland perennial arid area (NW), the southwest mountainous area with successive years of drought (SW), and the Hunan Hubei Jiangxi area with sudden change from drought to waterlogging (HJ) regions were close and significantly higher than the TVDI variance ratio values. (2) Most of the losses (drought at-risk populations, DRP) were concentrated in 0~0.3, with a cumulative proportion of about 90.19%. At the significance level, DRP obeys the Weibull distribution through hypothesis testing, and the parameters are optimal. (3) The drought vulnerability curve conformed to the distribution rule of the logistic curve, and the line shape was the growth of the loss rate from 0 to 1. It was found that the arid and ecologically fragile area in the farming pastoral ecotone (AP) region was always a high-risk area with high vulnerability, which should be the focus of drought risk prevention and reduction. The study reduces the difficulty of developing the vulnerability curve, indicating that the method can be widely used to other regions in the future. Improving high-resolution (meter-scale) mapping of snow-covered areas in complex and forested terrains is critical to understanding the responses of species and water systems to climate change. Commercial high-resolution imagery from Planet Labs, Inc. (Planet, San Francisco, CA, USA) can be used in environmental science, as it has both high spatial (0.7–3.0 m) and temporal (1–2 day) resolution. Deriving snow-covered areas from Planet imagery using traditional radiometric techniques have limitations due to the lack of a shortwave infrared band that is needed to fully exploit the difference in reflectance to discriminate between snow and clouds. However, recent work demonstrated that snow cover area (SCA) can be successfully mapped using only the PlanetScope 4-band (Red, Green, Blue and NIR) reflectance products and a machine learning (ML) approach based on convolutional neural networks (CNN). To evaluate how additional features improve the existing model performance, we: (1) build on previous work to augment a CNN model with additional input data including vegetation metrics (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and DEM-derived metrics (elevation, slope and aspect) to improve SCA mapping in forested and open terrain, (2) evaluate the model performance at two geographically diverse sites (Gunnison, Colorado, USA and Engadin, Switzerland), and (3) evaluate the model performance over different land-cover types. The best augmented model used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) along with visible (red, green, and blue) and NIR bands, with an F-score of 0.89 (Gunnison) and 0.93 (Engadin) and was found to be 4% and 2% better than when using canopy height- and terrain-derived measures at Gunnison, respectively. The NDVI-based model improves not only upon the original band-only model's ability to detect snow in forests, but also across other various land-cover types (gaps and canopy edges). We examined the model's performance in forested areas using three forest canopy quantification metrics and found that augmented models can better identify snow in canopy edges and open areas but still underpredict snow cover under forest canopies. While the new features improve model performance over band-only options, the models still have challenges identifying the snow under trees in dense forests, with performance varying as a function of the geographic area. The improved high-resolution snow maps in forested environments can support studies involving climate change effects on mountain ecosystems and evaluations of hydrological impacts in snow-dominated river basins. The vegetation green-up date (GUD) of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is highly sensitive to climate change. Accurate estimation of GUD is essential for understanding the dynamics and stability of terrestrial ecosystems and their interactions with climate. The GUD is usually determined from a time-series of vegetation indices (VIs). The adoption of different VIs and GUD extraction methods can lead to different GUDs. However, our knowledge of the uncertainty in these GUDs on TP is still limited. In this study, we evaluated the performance of different VIs and GUD extraction methods on TP from 2003 to 2020. The GUDs were determined from six Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) derived VIs: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), normalized difference infrared index (NDII), phenology index (PI), normalized difference phenology index (NDPI), and normalized difference greenness index (NDGI). Four extraction methods (βmax, CCRmax, G20, and RCmax) were applied individually to each VI to determine GUD. The GUDs obtained from all VIs showed similar patterns of early green-up in the eastern and late green-up in the western plateau, and similar trend of GUD advancement in the eastern and postponement in the western plateau. The accuracy of the derived GUDs was evaluated by comparison with ground-observed GUDs from 19 agrometeorological stations. Our results show that two snow-free VIs, NDGI and NDPI, had better performance in GUD extraction than the snow-calibrated conventional VIs, NDVI and EVI. Among all the VIs, NDGI gave the highest GUD accuracy when combined with the four extraction methods. Based on NDGI, the GUD extracted by the CCRmax method was found to have the highest consistency (r = 0.62, p < 0.01, RMSE = 11 days, bias = −3.84 days) with ground observations. The NDGI also showed the highest accuracy for preseason snow-covered site-years (r = 0.71, p < 0.01, RMSE = 10.69 days, bias = −4.05 days), indicating its optimal resistance to snow cover influence. In comparison, NDII and PI hardly captured GUD. NDII was seriously affected by preseason snow cover, as indicated by the negative correlation coefficient (r = −0.34, p < 0.1), high RMSE and bias (RMSE = 50.23 days, bias = −24.25 days). Differentiation of grassland/forage types and accurate estimates of their location and extent are important for understanding their ecological processes and for applying appropriate management practices. We are aiming to reveal the different spectral characteristics of six grassland/forage land covers in three ecoregions located in the Canadian Prairies, based on field data and satellite images. Three spectral indices representing productivity (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)), moisture content (Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI)), and plant photosynthetic activity (Plant Senescence Reflectance Index (PSRI)) were used for comparison of means, comparison of coefficient of variation (CV), and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results indicated that different grassland types show distinguishable spectral characteristics in the Moist-Mixed and Mixed Ecoregions, while it was not possible to differentiate the classes in the Fescue Ecoregion. To further investigate the within-sites and between-sites heterogeneity, we calculated the CV in a 3 × 3 window and placed them in comparative triangles to demonstrate their potential separability. Salt marshes are highly important wetlands; however, external pressures are causing their widespread deterioration and loss. Continuous monitoring of their extent is paramount for the preservation and recovery of deteriorated and threatened salt marshes. In general, moderate-resolution satellite remote sensing data allow for the accurate detection of salt marsh shorelines; however, their detection in narrow and fringing salt marshes remains challenging. This study aims to evaluate the ability of Landsat-5 (TM), Landsat-7 (ETM+), and Sentinel-2 (MSI) data to be used to accurately determine the shoreline of narrow and fringing salt marshes, focusing on three regions of the Aveiro lagoon in Mira, Ílhavo and S. Jacinto channels. Shorelines were determined considering the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and the accuracy of this methodology was evaluated against reference shorelines by computing the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). Once validated, the method was used to determine historical salt marsh shorelines, and rates of change between 1984 and 2022 were quantified and analyzed in the three locations. Results evidence that the 30 m resolution Landsat data accurately describe the salt marsh shoreline (RMSE~15 m) and that the accuracy is maintained when increasing the spatial resolution through pan-sharpening or when using 10 m resolution Sentinel-2 (MSI) data. These also show that the salt marshes of the Ílhavo and S. Jacinto channels evolved similarly, with salt marsh shoreline stability before 2000 followed by retreats after this year. At the end of the four decades of study, an average retreat of 66.23 ± 1.03 m and 46.62 ± 0.83 m was found, respectively. In contrast to these salt marshes and to the expected evolution, the salt marsh of the Mira Channel showed retreats before 2000, followed by similar progressions after this year, resulting in an average 2.33 ± 1.18 m advance until 2022. Soil moisture (SM) is an indicator of the moisture status of the land surface, which is useful for monitoring extreme weather events. Representative global SM datasets include the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis 5 (ERA5), but due to their low spatial resolutions, none of these datasets well describe SM changes in local areas, and they tend to have a low accuracy. Machine learning (ML)-based SM predictions have demonstrated high accuracy, but obtaining semi-real-time SM information remains challenging, and the dependence of the validation accuracy on the data sampling method used, such as random or yearly sampling, has led to uncertainties. In this study, we aimed to develop an ML-based model for real-time SM estimation that can capture local-scale variabilities in SM and have reliable accuracy, regardless of the sampling method. This study was conducted in South Korea, and satellite image data, numerical weather prediction (NWP) data, and topographic data provided within one day were used as the input data. For SM modeling, 13 input variables affecting the surface SM status were selected: 10- and 20-day cumulative standardized precipitation indexes (SPI10 and SPI20), a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), downward shortwave radiation (DSR), air temperature (Tair), land surface temperature (LST), soil temperature (Tsoil), relative humidity (RH), latent heat flux (LE), slope, elevation, topographic ruggedness index (TRI), and aspect. Then, SM models based on random forest (RF) and automated machine learning (AutoML) were constructed, trained, and validated using random sampling and leave-one-year-out (LOYO) cross-validation. The RF- and AutoML-based SM models had significantly high accuracy rates based on comparisons with in situ SM (mean absolute error (MAE) = 2.212–4.132%; mean bias error (MBE) = −0.110–0.136%; root mean square error (RMSE) = 3.186–5.384%; correlation coefficient (CC) = 0.732–0.913), while the AutoML-based SM model tended to have a higher accuracy than the RF-based SM model, regardless of the data sampling method used. In addition, when compared to in situ SM data, the SM models demonstrated the highest accuracy, outperforming both GLDAS and ERA5 SM data and well representing changes in the dryness/wetness of the land surface according to meteorological events (heatwave, drought, and rainfall). The SM models proposed in this study can, thus, offer semi-real-time SM data, aiding in the monitoring of moisture changes in the land surface, as well as short-term meteorological disasters, like flash droughts or floods. Time-series remote sensing images are important in agricultural monitoring and investigation. However, most time-series data with high temporal resolution have the problem of insufficient spatial resolution which cannot meet the requirement of precision agriculture. The unmixing technique can obtain the object abundances with richer spatial information from the coarse-resolution images. Although the unmixing technique is widely used in hyperspectral data, it is insufficiently researched for time-series data. Temporal unmixing extends spectral unmixing to the time domain from the spectral domain, and describes the temporal characteristics rather than the spectral characteristics of different ground objects. Deep learning (DL) techniques have achieved promising performance for the unmixing problem in recent years, but there are still few studies on temporal mixture analysis (TMA), especially in the application of crop phenological monitoring. This paper presents a novel spatial–temporal deep image prior method based on a Bayesian framework (ST-Bdip), which innovatively combines the knowledge-driven TMA model and the DL-driven model. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) data is used as the object for TMA, while the extracted seasonal crop signatures and the fractional coverages are perceived as the temporal endmembers (tEMs) and corresponding abundances. The proposed ST-Bdip method mainly includes the following contributions. First, a deep image prior model based on U-Net architecture is designed to efficiently learn the spatial context information, which enhances the representation of abundance modeling compared to the traditional non-negative least squares algorithm. Second, The TMA model is incorporated into the U-Net training process to exploit the knowledge in the forward temporal model effectively. Third, the temporal noise heterogeneity in time-series images is considered in the model optimization process. Specifically, the anisotropic covariance matrix of observations from different time dimensions is modeled as a multivariate Gaussian distribution and incorporated into the calculation of the loss function. Fourth, the "purified means" approach is used to further optimize crop tEMs and the corresponding abundances. Finally, the expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm is designed to solve the maximum a posterior (MAP) problem of the model in the Bayesian framework. Experimental results on three synthetic datasets with different noise levels and two real MODIS datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach in comparison with seven traditional and advanced unmixing algorithms. Surface upward longwave radiation (SULR) is one of the four components of surface net radiation. Geostationary satellites can provide high temporal but coarse spatial resolution SULR products. Downscaling coarse SULR to a higher resolution is important for fine-scale thermal condition monitoring. Statistical regression downscaling is widely used due to its simplicity and is built on the assumption that the thermal parameter like land surface temperature (LST) or SULR has a relationship with the related surface factors like the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the relationship remains unchanged in any scales. In this study, to establish the relationship between SULR and the related surface factors, we chose the multiple linear regression (MLR) model and five surface factors (i.e., the modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI), normalized difference built-up and soil index (NDBSI), NDVI, normalized moisture difference index (NMDI), and urban index (UI)) to drive the downscaling process. Additionally, a step-by-step downscaling strategy was applied to reach the 100-fold increase in spatial resolution, transitioning the estimated SULR from 4 km of the advanced geostationary radiation imager (AGRI) onboard FengYun-4B (FY-4B) satellite to 40 m of the visual and infrared multispectral imager (VIMI) in infrared spectrum onboard GaoFen5-02 (GF5-02). Finally, we evaluated the downscaling results by comparing the downscaled SULR values with the in situ measured SULR and GF5-02-calculated SULR, and the root mean square errors (RMSEs) were 19.70 W/m2 and 24.86 W/m2, respectively. Throughout this MLR-based step-by-step downscaling method (high-frequency data from FY-4B and high spatial resolution data from GF5-02), high spatiotemporal SULR (15 min temporal resolution, 40 m spatial resolution) were successfully generated instead of coarse spatial resolution ones from the FY-4B satellite or a coarse temporal resolution one from the GF5-02 satellite, relieving the above-mentioned conflict to some extent. Drought is a frequent global phenomenon. Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), an electromagnetic signal, has been proven to be an efficient tool for monitoring and assessing gross primary productivity (GPP) and drought. To address the issue of the sparse resolution of satellite-based SIF, researchers have developed different downscaling algorithms. Recently, the most frequently used SIF products had a spatial resolution of 0.05 degrees. However, these spatial resolution SIF data are not conducive to regional agricultural drought monitoring. In this study, we utilized the global 'OCO-2' solar-induced fluorescence (GOSIF) products along with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) products. With the powerful advantages offered by Google Earth Engine (GEE), we could conveniently acquire the necessary data. Additionally, employing the random forest (RF) method, we successfully acquired downscaled SIF data at an enhanced spatial resolution of 1 km. Using those downscaled SIF results with 1 km resolution, an SIF anomaly index was established and calculated to monitor drought. Results showed that the RF-based downscaled SIF result followed the same trend as the GOSIF value. Subsequently, correlation coefficients between SIF and GPP were calculated. The downscaled SIF demonstrated a higher correlation with GPP from MODIS compared to 0.05-degree GOSIF, with coefficients of 0.74 and 0.68 in May 2018, respectively. Moreover, the SIF anomaly index showed positive correlations with crop yield; the correlation coefficients were 0.93 for wheat and 0.89 for maize. The drought index had a negative correlation with areas affected by drought, with a correlation coefficient of −0.58. Finally, the SIF anomaly index was used to monitor drought from 2001 to 2020 in Henan Province. The 1 km SIF results obtained through the RF-based downscaled method were deemed reliable, thereby establishing the suitability of the SIF anomaly index for drought monitoring at a regional scale. Cladophora qinghaiensis, an endemic species of Cladophora in saltwater lakes, was scientifically named in 2021 (hereafter referred to as Cladophora). Cladophora exists in different morphologies, including attached submerged Cladophora (AC), grown floating Cladophora (GFC), and death floating Cladophora (DFC). Previous satellite remote sensing has mainly focused on identifying floating algae. In this study, Qinghai Lake served as a case study, and a classification decision tree model (CDTM) was proposed. The model employed the chlorophyll spectral index (CSI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to differentiate AC, Floating Cladophora (FC), and water. Additionally, the floating Cladophora index (FCI) was introduced to further distinguish GFC and DFC within FC. The method was applicable to Sentinel-2 images from 2016–2023. Visual interpretation methods were used for Landsat series images from the summer months (July to September) to obtain the AC and FC. The results demonstrate that over the past 30 years, the areas inhabited by AC and FC have increased gradually. The three morphologies of Cladophora also exhibited seasonal variations, with growth observed annually in May–June, reaching peaks in August–September, and gradually declining in October. In addition, by combining factors such as water surface area and climatic factors, we analyzed the driving forces influencing the changes in Cladophora. In this research, AC and FC showed significant correlations with the water surface area, with correlation coefficients (r) of approximately 0.9 and 0.7, respectively. Precision viticulture systems are essential for enhancing traditional intensive viticulture, achieving high-quality results, and minimizing costs. This study explores the integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and artificial intelligence in precision viticulture, focusing on vine detection and vineyard zoning. Vine detection employs the YOLO (You Only Look Once) deep learning algorithm, achieving a remarkable 90% accuracy by analysing UAV imagery with various spectral ranges from various phenological stages. Vineyard zoning, achieved through the application of the K-means algorithm, incorporates geospatial data such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the assessment of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content in leaf blades and petioles. This approach enables efficient resource management tailored to each zone's specific needs. The research aims to develop a decision-support model for precision viticulture. The proposed model demonstrates a high vine detection accuracy and defines management zones with variable weighting factors assigned to each variable while preserving location information, revealing significant differences in variables. The model's advantages lie in its rapid results and minimal data requirements, offering profound insights into the benefits of UAV application for precise vineyard management. This article aims to estimate the water footprint (WF) of cereals—specifically, wheat and barley—in the Kairouan plain, located in central Tunisia. To achieve this objective, two components must be determined: actual evapotranspiration (ETa) and crop yield. The study covers three growing seasons from 2010 to 2013. The ETa estimation employed the S-SEBI (simplified surface energy balance index) model, utilizing Landsat 7 and 8 optical and thermal infrared spectral bands. For yield estimation, an empirical model based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was applied. Results indicate the effectiveness of the S-SEBI model in estimating ETa, demonstrating an R2 of 0.82 and an RMSE of 0.45 mm/day. Concurrently, yields mapped over the area range between 6 and 77 qx/ha. Globally, cereals' average WF varied from 1.08 m3/kg to 1.22 m3/kg over the three study years, with the majority below 1 m3/kg. Notably in dry years, the importance of the blue WF is emphasized compared to years with average rainfall (WFb-2013 = 1.04 m3/kg, WFb-2012 = 0.61 m3/kg, WFb-2011 = 0.41 m3/kg). Moreover, based on an in-depth agronomic analysis combining yields and WF, four classes were defined, ranging from the most water efficient to the least, revealing that over 30% of cultivated areas during the study years (approximately 40% in 2011 and 2012 and 29% in 2013) exhibited low water efficiency, characterized by low yields and high WF. A unique index, the WFI, is proposed to assess the spatial variability of green and blue water. This study utilized a remotely sensed dataset with a high spatial resolution of 3 m to predict species diversity in the Bobiri Forest Reserve (BFR), a moist semi-deciduous tropical forest in Ghana. We conducted a field campaign of tree species measurements to achieve this objective for species diversity estimation. Thirty-five field plots of 50 m × 20 m were established, and the most dominant tree species within the forest were identified. Other measurements, such as diameter at breast height (DBH ≥ 5 cm), tree height, and each plot's GPS coordinates, were recorded. The following species diversity indices were estimated from the field measurements: Shannon–Wiener (H′), Simpson diversity index (D2), species richness (S), and species evenness (J′). The PlanetScope surface reflectance data at 3 m spatial resolution was acquired and preprocessed for species diversity prediction. The spectral/pixel information of all bands, except the coastal band, was extracted for further processing. Vegetation indices (VIs) (NDVI—normalized difference vegetation index, EVI—enhanced vegetation index, SRI—simple ratio index, SAVI—soil adjusted vegetation index, and NDRE—normalized difference red edge index) were also calculated from the spectral bands and their pixel value extracted. A correlation analysis was then performed between the spectral bands and VIs with the species diversity index. The results showed that spectral bands 6 (red) and 2 (blue) significantly correlated with the two main species diversity indices (S and H′) due to their influence on vegetation properties, such as canopy biomass and leaf chlorophyll content. Furthermore, we conducted a stepwise regression analysis to investigate the most important spectral bands to consider when estimating species diversity from the PlanetScope satellite data. Like the correlation results, bands 6 (red) and 2 (blue) were the most important bands to be considered for predicting species diversity. The model equations from the stepwise regression were used to predict tree species diversity. Overall, the study's findings emphasize the relevance of remotely sensed data in assessing the ecological condition of protected areas, a tool for decision-making in biodiversity conservation. Drought is the most widespread climatic extreme that has negative impacts on ecohydrology. Studies have shown that drought can cause certain degrees of disturbances to different ecohydrological variables, but the duration and severity thresholds of drought that are sufficient to cause changes in ecohydrological variables remain largely unknown. At the same time, we should not ignore the dynamic variation of drought's effect on ecohydrological variables under the condition of climate change. Here, we derived the thresholds of several ecohydrological variables in response to drought in a historical period (1982–2015), including evapotranspiration (ET), soil moisture (SM), the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and we projected the occurrence probability's change trend of drought events that cause changes in ecohydrological variables under future climate change. The results show that the impact of drought on ecohydrological variables is not dependent on drought indicators. ET and NDVI were expected to decrease in most parts of the world due to increases in radiation (RAD) and temperature (TEMP) and decreases in precipitation (PRE) during drought periods. SM decreased in most regions of the world (93.47%) during the drought period, while VPD increased in 85.41% of the globe. The response thresholds for different ecohydrological variables to drought in the same area did not differ significantly (especially for ET, SM and VPD). When a drought lasted for 8 to 15 months and the corresponding drought severity reached 10 to 15 (the inverse of the cumulative values of the drought index when the drought occurs), the drought caused changes in the ecohydrological variables in most regions of the world. Compared with arid and semiarid regions, ecohydrological variables are more sensitive to drought in humid and semihumid regions (p < 0.05), and high-intensity human activities in different climatic conditions increased significantly the severity of drought processes. Between 2071 and 2100, more than half of the world's ecohydrological variables are expected to be more susceptible to drought disturbances (regions with shorter return periods of drought events that cause significant changes in ET, SM, VPD and NDVI account for 60.1%, 64.4%, 59.6% and 54.5% of the global land area, respectively). Recent studies offer more evidence that the rate of warming is amplified with elevation, indicating thereby that high-elevation ecosystems tend to be exposed to more accelerated changes in temperature than ecosystems at lower elevations. The phenomenon of elevation-dependent warming (EDW), as one of the regional climate-change impacts, has been observed across the Tibetan Plateau. Studies have often found large-scale greening trends, but the drivers of vegetation dynamics are still not fully understood in this region, such that the local implications of vegetation change have been infrequently discussed. This study was designed to quantify and characterize the seasonal changes in vegetation across the Three Rivers Headwaters Region (TRHR), where the land cradles the headwaters of the Yangtze, the Yellow, and the Lancang (Mekong). By mapping the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) over the growing season from 1982 to 2015, we were able to evaluate seasonal changes in vegetation cover over time. The results show a slightly increased tendency in green vegetation cover, which could possibly be attributed to sustained warming in this region over the past three decades, whereas a decline in the green-up rate with elevation was found, indicating an inconsistent trend of vegetation greening with EDW. The cause of the green-up rate decline at high elevations could be linked to the reduced soil water availability induced by the fast increase in warming rates associated with EDW. Frequent water table measurements are crucial for sustainable groundwater management in arid regions. Such monitoring is more important in areas that are already facing an acute problem with excessive groundwater withdrawal. In the majority of these locations, continuous readings of groundwater levels are lacking. Therefore, an approximate estimate of the rate of increase or decrease in water consumption over time may serve as a proxy for the missing data. This could be achieved by tracking the changes in vegetated areas that generally correlate with changes in the rate of water use. The technique proposed in this paper is based on two remote sensing datasets: Landsat 7 and 8 from 2001 to 2021, and Sentinel 2A from 2015 to 2021, as well as five vegetation indices: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Renormalized Difference Vegetation Index (RDVI), Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and Transformed Vegetation Index (TVI). The findings have shown that the datasets chosen performed best for small-scale land farms at the research location, which was chosen to be the El-Qaa plain, in the southwestern corner of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Landsat 7 data with a resolution of 30 m revealed a substantial increase in land farms from 2.9 km2 in 2001 to 23.3 km2 in 2021. By using the five indices based on Sentinel 2A data, vegetated areas were categorized as heavy, moderate, or light. In addition, the expansion of each class area from 2015 to 2021 was tracked. Additionally, the NDVI index was modified to better reflect the arid environment (subsequently naming this new index as the Arid Vegetation Index: AVI). Quantifying vegetation responses after natural disasters helps clarify complex relationships between vegetation and surface processes such as soil erosion. The heterogenous post-disaster landscape offers a naturally stratified environment for this study. Existing research tends to be frequently monitored but small-scale or sporadically monitored but large-scale. The availability of high-quality and free satellite imagery bridges this gap by offering continuous, longer-term observations at the landscape scale. Here we take advantage of a dense Landsat time series to investigate landscape-scale vegetation response rates and factors at Unzen volcano, Japan. We do this by first investigating differences between two popular vegetation indices—The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), when applied to recovery studies. We then apply pixel-wise regressions to quantify spatio-temporal vegetation response and regression tree analyses to investigate drivers of recovery. Our findings showed that simple linear-log functions best model recovery rates reflecting primary succession trajectories caused by extreme disturbance and damage. Regression tree analyses showed that despite secondary disturbances, vegetation recovery in both the short and long-term is still dominated by eruption disturbance type and elevation. Dryland occupies about 46% of the global land surface area (except Antarctica) and is the most vulnerable area to climate change. From the conditions of vegetation and land surface wetness and blown sand phenomena, a simple observation system was developed to monitor regional wind erosion and applied to Khuld of Mongolia, which is sensitive to drought and desertification. The system was composed of instruments that observed blown sand, vegetation amount, land surface wetness, and landscape features related to regional wind erosion. Sixteen blown sand and eight sandstorm events were evaluated from 5 March to 5 June 2023 (i.e., during the Asian dust season in northeast Asia). The normalized difference vegetation index and visible images showed that the vegetation amount was considerably less, and the developed moisture index related to land surface wetness indicated dry conditions. Mangrove ecosystems provide numerous ecological services and serve as vital habitats for a wide range of flora and fauna. Thus, accurate mapping and monitoring of relevant land covers in mangrove ecosystems are crucial for effective conservation and management efforts. In this study, we proposed a novel approach for mangrove ecosystem mapping using a Hybrid Selective Kernel-based Convolutional Neural Network (HSK-CNN) framework and multi-temporal Sentinel-2 imagery. A time series of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) products derived from Sentinel-2 imagery was produced to capture the temporal behavior of land cover types in the dynamic ecosystem of the study area. The proposed algorithm integrated Selective Kernel-based feature extraction techniques to facilitate the effective learning and classification of multiple land cover types within the dynamic mangrove ecosystems. The model demonstrated a high Overall Accuracy (OA) of 94% in classifying eight land cover classes, including mangrove, tidal zone, water, mudflat, urban, and vegetation. The HSK-CNN demonstrated superior performance compared to other algorithms, including random forest (OA = 85%), XGBoost (OA = 87%), Three-Dimensional (3D)-DenseNet (OA = 90%), Two-Dimensional (2D)-CNN (OA = 91%), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP)-Mixer (OA = 92%), and Swin Transformer (OA = 93%). Additionally, it was observed that the structure of the network, such as the types of convolutional layers and patch sizes, affected the classification accuracy using the proposed model and, thus, the optimum scenarios and values of these parameters should be determined to obtain the highest possible classification accuracy. Overall, it was observed that the produced map could offer valuable insights into the distribution of different land cover types in the mangrove ecosystem, facilitating informed decision-making for conservation and sustainable management efforts. Spectral confusion among land cover classes is quite common, let alone in a complex and heterogenous system like the semi-arid Mediterranean environment; thus, employing new developments in remote sensing, such as multispectral imagery (MSI) captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) techniques, with deep learning (DL) algorithms for land cover classification can help to address this problem. Therefore, we propose an image-based land cover classification methodology based on fusing multispectral and airborne LiDAR data by adopting CNN-based semantic segmentation in a semi-arid Mediterranean area of northeastern Aegean, Greece. The methodology consists of three stages: (i) data pre-processing, (ii) semantic segmentation, and (iii) accuracy assessment. The multispectral bands were stacked with the calculated Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the LiDAR-based attributes height, intensity, and number of returns converted into two-dimensional (2D) images. Then, a hyper-parameter analysis was performed to investigate the impact on the classification accuracy and training time of the U-Net architecture by varying the input tile size and the patch size for prediction, including the learning rate and algorithm optimizer. Finally, comparative experiments were conducted by altering the input data type to test our hypothesis, and the CNN model performance was analyzed by using accuracy assessment metrics and visually comparing the segmentation maps. The findings of this investigation showed that fusing multispectral and LiDAR data improves the classification accuracy of the U-Net, as it yielded the highest overall accuracy of 79.34% and a kappa coefficient of 0.6966, compared to using multispectral (OA: 76.03%; K: 0.6538) or LiDAR (OA: 37.79%; K: 0.0840) data separately. Human activities coupled with climate change impacts are becoming the main factors in decreasing inland surface water quantity and quality, leading to the disturbance of the aquatic ecological balance. Under such conditions, the introduction and proliferation of aquatic invasive alien species are more likely to occur. Hence, frequent surface water quality monitoring is required for aquatic ecosystem sustainability. The main objectives of the present study are to analyze the seasonal variation in the invasive plant species water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes) and biogeochemical water quality parameters, i.e., chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended matter (TSM), and to examine their relationship in Lake Tana (Ethiopia) during a one-year study period (2020). Sentinel-2A/B satellite images are used to monitor water hyacinth expansion and Chl-a and TSM concentrations in the water. The Case 2 Regional Coast Colour processor (C2RCC) is used for atmospheric and sunglint correction over inland waters, while the Sen2Cor atmospheric processor is used to calculate the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for water hyacinth mapping. The water hyacinth cover and biomass are determined by NDVI values ranging from 0.60 to 0.95. A peak in cover and biomass is observed in October 2020, just a month after the peak of Chl-a (25.2 mg m−3) and TSM (62.5 g m−3) concentrations observed in September 2020 (end of the main rainy season). The influx of sediment and nutrient load from the upper catchment area during the rainy season could be most likely responsible for both Chl-a and TSM increased concentrations. This, in turn, created a fertile situation for water hyacinth proliferation in Lake Tana. In recent decades, European countries have faced repeated heat waves. Traditionally, atmospheric CO2 concentration linked to repeated heat wave-induced photosynthetic inhibition has been explored based on local-specific in-situ observations. However, previous research based on field surveys has limitations in exploring area-wide atmospheric CO2 concentrations linked to repeated heat wave-induced photosynthetic inhibition. The present study aimed to evaluate the spatial cross-correlation of Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) CO2 concentrations with repeated heat wave-induced photosynthetic inhibition in Europe from 2009 to 2017 by applying geographically weighted regression (GWR). The local standardized coefficient of a fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR: −0.24) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI: −0.22) indicate that photosynthetic inhibition increases atmospheric CO2 in Europe. Furthermore, from 2009 to 2017, the heat waves in Europe contributed to CO2 emissions (27.2–32.1%) induced by photosynthetic inhibition. Surface reflectance anisotropy and insufficient multi-angular observations are the main challenges in albedo estimation from satellite observations. Numerous studies have been developed for albedo retrieval from a single directional reflectance by associating the anisotropy information extracted from coarse-resolution bidirectional-reflectance distribution function (BRDF) data. The contribution of land-cover type (LCT) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in distinguishing reflectance anisotropy in these methods remains controversial. This study first proposed an approach to extracting a priori BRDF (F) from the MODIS BRDF/albedo product by considering the distribution characteristics of the model parameters. LCT- and NDVI-based F were also extracted from the corresponding subset. Then, the F-based albedo was derived from simulated or satellite directional reflectance and the anisotropic information of F. Finally, the directional reflectance and F-based albedo were compared with the MODIS albedo or ground measurement, in order to show the ability of F to compensate for the effect of reflectance anisotropy in the albedo retrieval process. The method was fully validated by the global and time-series MODIS BRDF data. The results showed that reflectance anisotropy has an aggregated distribution pattern, and F can represent the reflectance anisotropy of most pixels within a tile. The improvement of LCT and NDVI only occurs when the tile contains a large area of vegetated and barren ground. With the exception of the hotspot and large viewing-zenith-angle area in the forward hemisphere, the F-based shortwave albedo has high consistency with the MODIS albedo product. A comparison with the ground measurements and MODIS albedo showed that the F-based albedo from a single directional reflectance generally achieves an absolute accuracy requirement, with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.027 and 0.036. Estimating the optimum harvest time and yield embodies an essential food security factor. Vegetation indices have proven to be an effective tool for widescale in-field plant health mapping. A drone-based multispectral camera then conveniently allows acquiring data on the condition of the plant. This article examines and discusses the relationships between vegetation indices and nutritiolnal values that have been determined via chemical analysis of plant samples collected in the field. In this context, emphasis is placed on the normalized difference red edge index (NDRE), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI), and nutritional values, such as those of dry matter. The relationships between the variables were correlated and described by means of regression models. This produced equations that are applicable for estimating the quantity of dry matter and thus determining the optimum corn harvest time. The net primary productivity (NPP) of vegetation holds a pivotal character for the global carbon balance as a key parameter for characterizing terrestrial ecological processes. The most commonly used indices for estimating vegetation NPP, for instance, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), often suffer from saturation issues that can compromise the accuracy of NPP estimation. This research utilizes a new vegetation index based on the radial basis function (RBF) to estimate vegetation NPP in Chinese terrestrial ecosystems over the past two decades (2001–2020) and investigates the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of NPP and the driving mechanisms. The results indicate that the kernel vegetation index (kNDVI) can effectively alleviate the saturation problem and significantly improve the accuracy of NPP estimation compared to NDVI. Over the past two decades, the NPP of Chinese terrestrial vegetation ranged from 64.13 to 79.72 g C/m2, with a mean value of 72.75 g C/m2, showing a fluctuating upward trend. Changes in the NPP of terrestrial ecosystems in China are mainly affected by precipitation. The dominant factors influencing NPP changes varied over time and had different impacts. For instance, in the period of 2001–2005 the climate had a positive effect on NPP changes, with the dominant factors being evaporation and precipitation. However, in the period of 2010–2015 the dominant climate factors shifted to evaporation and temperature, and their effect on NPP changes became negative. Understanding the impact of water availability on vegetation growth in the context of climate change is crucial for assessing the resilience of vegetation to environmental shifts. In this study, the relationship between vegetation growth and water availability was studied using a variety of indicators. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF) were utilized as vegetation growth indicators, while the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and soil moisture indicators served as water use indices. To investigate the vegetation response to water deficit in the Loess Plateau during the growing season from 2000 to 2020, Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated using a 5-year sliding window approach. The spatial and temporal heterogeneity of vegetation response to water deficit during the growing seasons were also explored. The results showed that: (1) with the improvement of moisture conditions, vegetation growth recovered significantly, and there was no expansion trend for vegetation water deficit. (2) The most sensitive timescale of vegetation to water deficit was 6–8 months; the response degree and sensitivity of vegetation to water surplus and deficit were the highest from June to August; and broadleaved forest was the vegetation type most sensitive to water deficit in the early growing season, while grass was the vegetation type most sensitive to water deficit during the mid and late growing seasons. (3) Soil moisture emerged as the dominant factor influencing vegetation growth in the Loess Plateau, followed by precipitation, albeit to a lesser extent. This study aims to investigate how alternations of the land surface temperature (LST) affects the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in Paphos forest, Cyprus, using Landsat-5 and Landsat-8 imagery for the time periods 1993–2000 and 2013–2018, respectively. A total of 262 Landsat images were processed to compute the mean monthly NDVI and LST values and create a time series. Using the Cook's distance, the effect of missing values in the analysis of the time series were examined. Results from the cross-correlation and cross-variograms, decomposition model, and the BFAST algorithm were compared to produce reliable conclusions on forest changes and satellite, meteorological, and environmental data were combined to interpret the changes that occurred inside the forest. The decomposition analysis showed a decrease of 2.7% in the LST for the period 1993–2000 and an increase of 4.6% in the LST during the period 2013–2018. The NDVI trend is negatively correlated to the LST trend for both time periods. An increase in the LST trend was identified in November 1998 as well as in the NDVI trend in October 1994 and May 2014 that was caused by favorable climatic conditions. An increase in the NDVI trend from May 2014 to December 2015 may be related to reduced pityocampa attacks. An abrupt decrease was detected in December 2015 that was probably caused by the locust invasion that occurred in the island earlier that year. A positive correlation appears for LST and NDVI variables for time lags 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 months. The traditional method for determining wine grape total soluble solid (TSS) is destructive laboratory analysis, which is time consuming and expensive. In this study, we explore the potential of using different predictor variables from various advanced techniques to predict the grape TSS in a non-destructive and rapid way. Calculating Pearson's correlation coefficient between the vegetation indices (VIs) obtained from UAV multispectral imagery and grape TSS resulted in a strong correlation between OSAVI and grape TSS with a coefficient of 0.64. Additionally, seven machine learning models including ridge regression and lasso regression, k-Nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector regression (SVR), random forest regression (RFR), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and artificial neural network (ANN) are used to build the prediction models. The predictor variables include the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) derived VIs, and other ancillary variables including normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI_proximal) and soil electrical conductivity (ECa) measured by proximal sensors, elevation, slope, trunk circumference, and day of the year for each sampling date. When using 23 VIs and other ancillary variables as input variables, the results show that ensemble learning models (RFR, and XGBoost) outperform other regression models when predicting grape TSS, with the average of root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.19 and 1.2 °Brix, and coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.52 and 0.52, respectively, during the 20 times testing process. In addition, this study examines the prediction performance of using optimized soil adjusted vegetation index (OSAVI) or normalized green-blue difference index (NGBDI) as the main input for different machine learning models with other ancillary variables. When using OSAVI-based models, the best prediction model is RFR with an average R2 of 0.51 and RMSE of 1.19 °Brix, respectively. For NGBDI-based model, the RFR model showed the best average result of predicting TSS were a R2 of 0.54 and a RMSE of 1.16 °Brix, respectively. Landslides are among the most frequent hazards in Latin America and the world. In Brazil, they occur every year and cause economic and social loss. Landslide inventories are essential for assessing susceptibility, vulnerability, and risk. Over the decades, a variety of mapping approaches have been employed for the detection of landslides using Earth observation (EO) data. Object-based image analysis (OBIA) is a widely recognized method for mapping landslides and other morphological features. In Brazil, despite the high frequency of landslides, methods for inventory construction are poorly developed. The aim of this study is to semi-automatically recognize shallow landslides in Itaóca (Brazil) and evaluate the transferability of the approach within different areas in Brazil. RapidEye satellite images (5 m) and the derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), as well as a digital elevation model (DEM) (12.5 m) and morphological data, were integrated into the classification. The results show that the method is suitable for the recognition of this type of hazard in Brazil. The overall accuracy was 89%. The main challenges were the identification of small landslides and the exact delineation of scars. Data assimilation techniques allow researchers to optimally merge remote sensing observations in ecohydrological models, guiding them for improving land surface fluxes predictions. Presently, freely available remote sensing products, such as those of Sentinel 1 radar, Landsat 8 sensors, and Sentinel 2 sensors, allow the monitoring of land surface variables (e.g., radar backscatter for soil moisture and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and for leaf area index (LAI)) at unprecedentedly high spatial and time resolutions, appropriate for heterogeneous ecosystems, typical of semiarid ecosystems characterized by contrasting vegetation components (grass and trees) competing for water use. A multiscale assimilation approach that assimilates radar backscatter and grass and tree NDVI in a coupled vegetation dynamic–land surface model is proposed. It is based on the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), and it is not limited to assimilating remote sensing data for model predictions, but it uses assimilated data for dynamically updating key model parameters (the ENKFdc approach), including saturated hydraulic conductivity and grass and tree maintenance respiration coefficients, which are highly sensitive parameters of soil–water balance and biomass budget models, respectively. The proposed EnKFdc assimilation approach facilitated good predictions of soil moisture, grass, and tree LAI in a heterogeneous ecosystem in Sardinia for a 3-year period with contrasting hydrometeorological (dry vs. wet) conditions. Contrary to the EnKF-based approach, the proposed EnKFdc approach performed well for the full range of hydrometeorological conditions and parameters, even assuming extremely biased model conditions with very high or low parameter values compared with the calibrated ("true") values. The EnKFdc approach is crucial for soil moisture and LAI predictions in winter and spring, key seasons for water resources management in Mediterranean water-limited ecosystems. The use of ENKFdc also enabled us to predict evapotranspiration and carbon flux well, with errors of less than 4% and 15%, respectively; such results were obtained even with extremely biased initial model conditions. Intertidal vegetation provides important ecological functions, such as food and shelter for wildlife and ecological services with increased coastline protection from erosion. In cold temperate and subarctic environments, the short growing season has a significant impact on the phenological response of the different vegetation types, which must be considered for their mapping using satellite remote sensing technologies. This study focuses on the effect of the phenology of vegetation in the intertidal ecosystems on remote sensing outputs. The studied sites were dominated by eelgrass (Zostera marina L.), saltmarsh cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora), creeping saltbush (Atriplex prostrata), macroalgae (Ascophyllum nodosum, and Fucus vesiculosus) attached to scattered boulders. In situ data were collected on ten occasions from May through October 2019 and included biophysical properties (e.g., leaf area index) and hyperspectral reflectance spectra ( R r s (λ) ). The results indicate that even when substantial vegetation growth is observed, the variation in R r s (λ) is not significant at the beginning of the growing season, limiting the spectral separability using multispectral imagery. The spectral separability between vegetation types was maximum at the beginning of the season (early June) when the vegetation had not reached its maximum growth. Seasonal time series of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values were derived from multispectral sensors (Sentinel-2 multispectral instrument (MSI) and PlanetScope) and were validated using in situ-derived NDVI. The results indicate that the phenology of intertidal vegetation can be monitored by satellite if the number of observations obtained at a low tide is sufficient, which helps to discriminate plant species and, therefore, the mapping of vegetation. Carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes and evapotranspiration (ET) during the non-growing season can contribute significantly to the annual carbon and water budgets of agroecosystems. Comparative studies of vegetation phenology and the dynamics of CO2 fluxes and ET during the dormant season of native tallgrass prairies from different landscape positions under the same climatic regime are scarce. Thus, this study compared the dynamics of satellite-derived vegetation phenology (as captured by the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)) and eddy covariance (EC)-measured CO2 fluxes and ET in six differently managed native tallgrass prairie pastures during dormant seasons (November through March). During December–February, vegetation phenology (EVI and NDVI) and the dynamics of eddy fluxes were comparable across all pastures in most years. Large discrepancies in fluxes were observed during March (the time of the initiation of growth of dominant warm-season grasses) across years and pastures due to the influence of weather conditions and management practices. The results illustrated the interactive effects between prescribed spring burns and rainfall on vegetation phenology (i.e., positive and negative impacts of prescribed spring burns under non-drought and drought conditions, respectively). The EVI better tracked the phenology of tallgrass prairie during the dormant season than did NDVI. Similar EVI and NDVI values for the periods when flux magnitudes were different among pastures and years, most likely due to the satellite sensors' inability to fully observe the presence of some cool-season C3 species under residues, necessitated a multi-level validation approach of using ground-truth observations of species composition, EC measurements, PhenoCam (digital) images, and finer-resolution satellite data to further validate the vegetation phenology derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) during dormant seasons. Evapotranspiration (ET) is an essential part of the global water cycle, and accurate quantification of ET is of great significance for hydrological research and practice. The Priestley-Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory (PT-JPL) model is a commonly used remotely sensed (RS) ET model. The original PT-JPL model includes multiple vegetation variables but only requires the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as the vegetation input. Other vegetation inputs (e.g., Leaf Area Index (LAI) and Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR)) are estimated by the NDVI-based empirical methods. Here we investigate whether introducing more RS vegetation variables beyond NDVI can improve the PT-JPL model's performance. We combine the vegetation variables derived from RS and empirical methods into four vegetation input schemes for the PT-JPL model. The model performance under four schemes is evaluated at the site scale with the eddy covariance (EC)-based ET measurements and at the basin scale with the water balance-based ET estimates. The results show that the vegetation variables derived by RS and empirical methods are quite different. The ecophysiological constraints of the PT-JPL model constructed by the former are more reasonable in spatial distribution than those constructed by the latter. However, as vegetation input of the PT-JPL model, the scheme derived from empirical methods performs best among the four schemes. In other words, introducing more remotely sensed vegetation variables beyond NDVI into the PT-JPL model degrades the model performance to varying degrees. One possible reason for this is the unrealistic ET partitioning. It is necessary to re-parameterize the biophysical constraints of the PT-JPL model to ensure that the model obtains reasonable internal process simulations, that is, "getting the right results for right reasons." This research utilized various methods for extracting soil characteristics from Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS imagery in the Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam. In this study, the Object-Based Oriented Classification (OBOC) method was used to extract information about land cover (focusing on rock outcrops) on the basis of the TGSI, NDVI, and NDBI indicators. The soil moisture information was determined by examining the correlation between the Land Surface Temperature (LST) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The findings indicated that 40 locations in the study area were covered with rock outcrops, with a Kappa index of 85.10%. In addition, soil moisture varied markedly from the sandy coastal regions, urban areas, and hilly and mountainous areas on the study area's surface. It is hard for current time series reconstruction methods to achieve the balance of high-precision time series reconstruction and explanation of the model mechanism. The goal of this paper is to improve the reconstruction accuracy with a well-explained time series model. Thus, we developed a function-based model, the CCTM (Continuous Change Tracker Model) model, that can achieve high precision in time series reconstruction by tracking the time series variation rate. The goal of this paper is to provide a new solution for high-precision time series reconstruction and related applications. To test the reconstruction effects, the model was applied to four types of datasets: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), gross primary productivity (GPP), leaf area index (LAI), and MODIS surface reflectance (MSR). Several new observations are as follows. First, the CCTM model is well explained and based on the second-order derivative theorem, which divides the yearly time series into four variation types including uniform variations, decelerated variations, accelerated variations, and short-periodical variations, and each variation type is represented by a designed function. Second, the CCTM model provides much better reconstruction results than the Harmonic model on the NDVI, GPP, MSR, and LAI datasets for the seasonal segment reconstruction. The combined use of the Savitzky–Golay filter and the CCTM model is better than the combinations of the Savitzky–Golay filter with other models. Third, the Harmonic model has the best trend-fitting ability on the yearly time series dataset, with the highest R-Square and the lowest RMSE among the four function fitting models. However, with seasonal piecewise fitting, the four models all achieved high accuracy, and the CCTM performs the best. Fourth, the CCTM model should also be applied to time series image compression, two compression patterns with 24 coefficients and 6 coefficients respectively are proposed. The daily MSR dataset can achieve a compression ratio of 15 by using the 6-coefficients method. The large area estimation of forest canopy closure (FCC) using remotely sensed data is of high interest in monitoring forest changes and forest health, as well as in assessing forest ecological services. The accurate estimation of FCC over the regional or global scale is challenging due to the difficulty of sample acquisition and the slow processing efficiency of large amounts of remote sensing data. To address this issue, we developed a novel bounding envelope methodology based on vegetation indices (BEVIs) for determining vegetation and bare soil endmembers using the normalized differences vegetation index (NDVI), modified bare soil index (MBSI), and bare soil index (BSI) derived from Landsat 8 OLI and Sentinel-2 image within the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, then combined the NDVI with the dimidiate pixel model (DPM), one of the most commonly used spectral-based unmixing methods, to map the FCC distribution over an area of more than 90,000 km2. The key processing was the determination of the threshold parameter in BEVIs that characterizes the spectral boundary of vegetation and soil endmembers. The results demonstrated that when the threshold equals 0.1, the extraction accuracy of vegetation and bare soil endmembers is the highest with the threshold range given as (0, 0.3), and the estimated spatial distribution of FCC using both Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 images were consistent, that is, the area with high canopy density was mainly distributed in the western mountainous region of Chifeng city. The verification was carried out using independent field plots. The proposed approach yielded reliable results when the Landsat 8 data were used (R2 = 0.6, RMSE = 0.13, and 1-rRMSE = 80%), and the accuracy was further improved using Sentinel-2 images with higher spatial resolution (R2 = 0.81, RMSE = 0.09, and 1-rRMSE = 86%). The findings demonstrate that the proposed method is portable among sensors with similar spectral wavebands, and can assist in mapping FCC at a regional scale while using multispectral satellite imagery. Monitoring and modeling of coastal vegetation and wetland systems are considered major challenges, especially when considering environmental response to hazards, disturbances, and management activities. Remote sensing applications can provide alternatives and complementary approaches to the often costly and laborious field-based collection methods traditionally used for coastal ecosystem monitoring. New and improved sensors and data analysis techniques have become available, making remote sensing applications attractive for evaluation and potential use in monitoring coastal vegetation properties and ecosystem conditions and change. This study involves the extraction of vegetation metrics from airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and hyperspectral imagery (HSI) to quantify coastal dune vegetation characteristics and assesses landscape-level trends from those derived metrics. HSI- and LiDAR-derived elevation (digital elevation model) and vegetation metrics (canopy height model, leaf area index, and normalized difference vegetation index) were used in conjunction with per-pixel linear regression and hot spot analyses to evaluate hurricane-induced spatial and temporal changes in elevation and vegetation properties. These assessments showed areas with greatest decreases in vegetation metric values were associated with direct tropical storm energies and processes (i.e., overwashing events eroding beach and dune features), while those with the greatest increases in vegetation metric values were in areas where overwashed sediments were distributed. This study narrows existing gaps in dune vegetation data by advancing new methodologies to classify, quantify, and estimate critical coastal vegetation metrics. Engineering corridors on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau have substantially modified the regional ecosystem functions and environment, resulting in changes in the alpine ecosystem. In addition, the building and operation of these engineering corridors have led to rapid permafrost degradation, which in turn has impacted local vegetation along these corridors. This study investigated vegetation changes and their driving factors by the methods of coefficient of variation, correlation analysis, and GeoDetector in a 30 km wide buffer zone at each side along the National Highway G214 (G214) at the northern and southern flanks of the Bayan Har Mountains in part of the source area of the Yellow and Yangtze rivers on the southern Qinghai Plateau, West China. The following results were obtained: (1) The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index in Growing Season (NDVIgs) rose slightly in 2010–2019, with an average annual change rate of 0.006/a. Patterns of NDVIgs along the G214 exhibited "low at the northern flank and high at the southern flank of the Bayan Har Mountains". (2) Spatially, average NDVIgs increased from the first buffer zone at the distance of 0–10 km from the highway centerline to the second buffer zone at 20–30 km perpendicularly away from the G214. Furthermore, the first buffer zone had the lowest coefficient of variation, possibly due to a low vegetation recovery as a result of the greatest influence of the G214 on NDVIgs at 0–10 km. (3) Furthermore, annual precipitation (AP) was the dominant factor for significantly (p < 0.01) and positively influencing the variations in NDVIgs (R = 0.75, p < 0.01). Additionally, NDVIgs was more strongly influenced by the two combined factors than any single one, with the highest q-value (0.74) for the interactive influences of AP and annual average air temperature (AAAT) and followed by that of the AP and mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) at the depth of zero annual amplitude (15 m). Evidently, the construction and operation of the G214 have directly and indirectly affected vegetation through changing environmental variables, with significant impacts on NDVIgs extended at least 20 km outwards from the highway. Over the last five decades, Pakistan experienced its worst drought from 1998 to 2002 and its worst flood in 2010. This study determined the record-breaking impacts of the droughts (1998–2002) and the flood (2010) and analyzed the given 12-year period, especially the follow-on period when the winter wheat crop was grown. We identified the drought, flood, and warm and cold edges over the plain of Punjab Pakistan based on a 12-year time series (2003–2014), using the vegetation temperature condition index (VTCI) approach based on Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data products. During the year 2010, the Global Flood Monitoring System (GFMS) model applied to the real-time Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rainfall incorporated data products into the TRMM Multi-Satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) for the flood detection/intensity, stream flow, and daily accumulative precipitation, and presented the plain provisions to wetlands. This study exhibits drought severity, warm and cold edges, and flood levels using the VTCI drought-monitoring approach, which utilizes a combination of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) with land surface temperature (LST) data products. It was found that during the years 2003–2014, the VTCI had a positive correlation coefficient (r) with the cumulative precipitation (r = 0.60) on the day of the year (D-073) in the winter. In the year 2010, at D-201, there was no proportionality (nonlinear), and at D-217, a negative correlation was established. This revealed the time, duration, and intensity of the flood at D-201 and D-217, and described the heavy rainfall, stream flow, and flood events. At D-233 and D-281 during 2010, a significant positive correlation was noticed in normal conditions (r = 0.95 in D-233 and r= 0.97 in D-281 during the fall of 2010), which showed the flood events and normality. Notably, our results suggest that VTCI can be used for drought and wet conditions in both rain-fed and irrigated regions. The results are consistent with anomalies in the GFMS model using the spatial and temporal observations of the MODIS, TRMM, and TMPA satellites, which describe the dry and wet conditions, as well as flood runoff stream flow and flood detection/intensity, in the region of Punjab during 2010.
