Three-Dimensional Ground Penetrating Radar (3D GPR) detects subsurface targets non-destructively, rapidly, and continuously. The complex environment around urban roads affects the positioning accuracy of 3D GPR. The positioning accuracy directly affects the data quality, as inaccurate positioning can lead to distortion and misalignment of 3D GPR data. This paper proposed a multi-level robust positioning method to improve the positioning accuracy of 3D GPR in dense urban areas in order to obtain more accurate underground data. In environments with good GNSS signals, fast and high-precision positioning can be achieved based on GNSS data using differential GNSS technology; in scenes with weak GNSS signals, high-precision positioning of subsurface data can be achieved by using GNSS and IMU as well as using GNSS/INS tightly coupled solution technology; in scenes with no GNSS signals, SLAM technology is used for positioning based on INS data and 3D point cloud data. In summary, this method ensures a positioning accuracy of 3D GPR better than 10 cm and high-quality 3D images of underground urban roads in any environment. Mini–unmanned aerial vehicles (mini-UAVs) are emerging as a promising platform for through-wall radar to sense the enclosed space in cities, especially high-rise buildings, due to their excellent maneuverability. However, due to unavoidable environmental interference such as airflow, mini-UAVs are prone to trajectory deviation thus degrading their sensing accuracy. Most of the existing approaches model the impact of trajectory deviation into a polynomial phase error on the received signal, which cannot fit the space-variant motion error well. Moreover, the large trajectory deviations of UAVs introduce the unavoidable envelope error. This article proposes an autofocusing algorithm based on the back projection (BP) image, which directly estimates the trajectory deviations between the actual and measured track. Thus, the problem of the 2D space variability of the motion error can be circumvented. The proposed method mainly consists of two steps. First, we estimate the trajectory deviation in the line-of-sight (LOS) direction by exploring the underlying linear property of the wall embedded in the BP imaging result. Then, the estimated trajectory deviation in the LOS direction is compensated for to obtain an updated BP image, followed by a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) approach to estimate the trajectory deviation along the track through focusing targets behind the wall. Simulations and practical experiments show that the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the serious trajectory deviations larger than the range resolution, improving the sensing robustness of UAV-borne through-wall radar greatly. Extracting buildings in urban scenes from remote sensing images is crucial for the construction of digital cities, urban monitoring, urban planning, and autonomous driving. Traditional methods generally rely on shadow detection or stereo matching from multi-view high-resolution remote sensing images, which is cost-intensive. Recently, machine learning has provided solutions for the estimation of building heights from remote sensing images, but challenges remain due to the limited observation angles and image quality. The inherent lack of information in a single modality greatly limits the extraction precision. This article proposes an advanced method using multi-source remote sensing images for urban building height estimation, which is characterized by multi-level cross-fusion, the multi-task joint learning of footprint extraction and height estimation, and semantic information to refine the height estimation results. The complementary and effective features of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and electro-optical (EO) images are transferred through multi-level cross-fusion. We use the semantic information of the footprint extraction branch to refine the height estimation results, enhancing the height results from coarse to fine. Finally, We evaluate our model on the SpaceNet 6 dataset and achieve 0.3849 and 0.7231 in the height estimation metric δ 1 and footprint extraction metric D i c e , respectively, which indicate effective improvements in the results compared to other methods. Ground deformation is one of the crucial issues threatening many cities in both societal and economic aspects. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has been widely used for deformation monitoring. Recently, there has been an increasing availability of massive archives of SAR images from various satellites or sensors. This paper introduces Multi-Satellite SBAS that exploits complementary information from different SAR data to generate integrated long-term ground displacement time series. The proposed method is employed to create the vertical displacement maps of Almokattam City in Egypt from 2000 to 2020. The experimental results are promising using ERS, ENVISAT ASAR, and Sentinel-1A displacement integration. There is a remarkable deformation in the vertical direction along the west area while the mean deformation velocity is −2.32 mm/year. Cross-validation confirms that the root mean square error (RMSE) did not exceed 2.8 mm/year. In addition, the research findings are comparable to those of the previous research in the study area. Consequently, the proposed integration method has great potential to generate displacement time series based on multi-satellite SAR data; however, it still requires further evaluation using field measurements. The standard Permanent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PSInSAR) technique, which is commonly used for surface motion analysis, assumes linear deformation velocities. While effective for monitoring urban subsidence over short periods, it falls short when dealing with non-linear, earthquake-related deformations over extended timeframes. To address this limitation, we use a non-linear PSInSAR technique, which is an enhancement of PSInSAR, to identify non-linear deformation patterns. We processed Sentinel-1A images from ascending and descending orbits in the Islamabad/Rawalpindi region from December 2015 to January 2023 using non-linear PSInSAR. By calculating the differences in deformation, we analyzed surface movements and assessed the impact of the 2017 earthquake on urban areas. Our findings reveal that the earthquake significantly increased the deformation in ascending and descending orbit tracks, with an average deformation of up to 70 mm/yr and a line-of-sight movement of up to 30 mm/yr. Our observations indicate that the deformation is directed towards the line of sight in the north and south of the deformed area, suggesting subsidence between the two uplifting faults, potentially linked to a concealed fault line along the deformation zone boundary. This contradicts previous arguments, suggesting that water extraction is the leading cause of deformation. Our analysis with non-linear PSInSAR demonstrates that tectonics play a significant role in deformation, providing valuable insights into tectonic-activity-induced deformations in urban areas over the long term. Ulva prolifera (U. prolifera), a global eco-environmental issue, has been recurring annually in the Yellow Sea of China since 2007, leading to significant impacts on the coastal ecosystem and the economies of coastal cities. To enhance the frequency of daily monitoring for U. prolifera and to advance the multi-source remote sensing monitoring system, a combination of the Sentinel-1 SAR remote sensing satellite and the Sentinel-3 OLCI and NPP VIIRS optical remote sensing satellites was employed. This comprehensive analysis encompassed the examination of Sentinel-1 C band characteristics, the range of influence of U. prolifera, and the migration trajectory of its enrichment zones. On 6 June 2021, three satellite images depicted the northwest drift of U. prolifera, followed by a southward movement after making contact with the coast of Qingdao, China, on 12 June. The most extensive impact area caused by U. prolifera was observed on 18 June. Subsequently, the images revealed a contraction and enrichment of U. prolifera in an eas–-west direction. The amalgamation of radar and optical remote sensing satellites in a multi-frequency monitoring approach allows for a continuous all-weather surveillance mechanism for U. prolifera. Climate change represents an important cause of subsidence, especially in coastal cities affected by changes in surface water level and water table. This paper presents a complementary study of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for the early detection of subsidence and sinkhole phenomena. The methodology was applied to a coastal urban area in Galicia, northwest Spain (humid region), showing apparent signs of subsidence and building settlement during the last two years. Two different InSAR methods are compared for the period from June 2021 to March 2022: PSI (Persistent Scatterer Interferometry) and SBAS (Small Baseline Subsets), and the average deformation velocities obtained resulted in −3.0 mm/yr and −4.1 mm/yr, respectively. Additional GPR data were collected in January 2022 to validate the InSAR results, which detected subsidence in agreement with the persistent scatters obtained from the PSI method. The use of solar energy has shown the fastest global growth of all renewable energy sources. Efforts towards careful evaluation are required to select optimal locations for the installation of photovoltaics (PV) because their effectiveness is strongly reliant on exposure to solar irradiation. Assessing the shadows cast by nearby buildings and vegetation is essential, especially at the city scale. Due to urban complexity, conventional methods using Digital Surface Models (DSM) overestimate solar irradiation in dense urban environments. To provide further insights into this dilemma, a new modeling technique was developed for integrated 3D city modeling and solar potential assessment on building roofs using light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. The methodology used hotspot analysis to validate the workflow in both site and without-site contexts (e.g., trees that shield small buildings). Field testing was conducted, covering a total area of 4975 square miles and 10,489 existing buildings. The results demonstrate a considerable impact of large, dense trees on the solar irradiation received by smaller buildings. Considering the site's context, a mean annual solar estimate of 99.97 kWh/m2/year was determined. Without considering the site context, this value increased by 9.3% (as a percentage of total rooftops) to 109.17 kWh/m2/year, with a peak in July and troughs in December and January. The study suggests that both factors have a substantial impact on solar potential estimations, emphasizing the importance of carefully considering the shadowing effect during PV panel installation. The research findings reveal that 1517 buildings in the downtown area of Austin have high estimated radiation ranging from 4.7 to 6.9 kWh/m2/day, providing valuable insights for the identification of optimal locations highly suitable for PV installation. Tomographic synthetic aperture radar (TomoSAR) obtains elevation resolution by adding multiple baselines successively in the direction perpendicular to the line of sight, thereby realizing three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of complex scenes and significantly promoting the development of the 3D application field. However, a large data redundancy and long mapping time in traditional 3D imaging lead to a large data transmission burden, low efficiency, and high costs. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a distributed SAR high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) 3D imaging technology scheme. The proposed scheme overcomes the size limitation of traditional single-satellite antennas through the multi-channel arrangement of multiple satellites in the elevation direction to achieve HRWS imaging; meanwhile, the distributed SAR system is integrated with tomographic processing technology to realize 3D imaging of difficult areas by using the elevation directional resolution of TomoSAR systems. HRWS 3D SAR increases the baseline length and channel number by transmission in turn, which leads to excessive pulse repetition frequency and causes echoes of different pulse signals to overlap in the same receiving cycle, resulting in range ambiguity and thus seriously affecting the quality of the 3D reconstruction. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a range ambiguity resolution algorithm based on multi-beam forming and verifies it on the measured data from airborne array SAR. Compared with the traditional TomoSAR, the distributed HRWS 3D SAR scheme proposed in this paper can obtain a greater mapping bandwidth with the same resolution in a single flight, thereby enhancing the time correlation, reducing data redundancy, and greatly improving mapping efficiency. Health monitoring is important for densely distributed urban infrastructures, particularly in cities undergoing rapid economic progress. Permanent scatterer interferometry (PSI) is an advanced remote sensing observation technique that is commonly used in urban infrastructure monitoring. However, the rapid construction of infrastructures may easily cause a loss of coherence for radar interferometry, inducing a low density of effective permanent scatterer (PS) points, which is the main limitation of PSI. In order to address these problems, a novel time-series synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) process based on the adaptive window homogeneous pixel selection and phase optimization (AWHPSPO) algorithm and thermal expansion linear model (TELM) is proposed. Firstly, for homogeneous point selection, information on both the time-series intensity and deformation phases is considered, which can compensate for the defects of insufficient homogeneous samples and low phase quality in traditional distributed scatterer interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DS-InSAR) processing. Secondly, the physical, thermal expansion component, which reflects the material properties of the infrastructures, is introduced into the traditional linear model, which can more rationally reflect the temporal evolution of deformation variation, and the thermal expansion coefficients can be estimated simultaneously with the deformation parameters. In order to verify our proposed algorithm, the Orange Island area in Changsha City, China, was selected as the study area in this experiment. Three years of its historical time-series deformation fields and thermal expansion coefficients were regenerated. With the use of high-resolution TerraSAR-X radar satellite images, a maximum accumulated settlement of 12.3 mm and a minor uplift of 8.2 mm were detected. Crossvalidation with small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) results using Sentinel 1A data proved the reliability of AWHPSPO. New scattering models are constantly emerging to extract the detailed polarization information of ground targets. They contribute to the refined interpretation of Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) images. However, an increasingly prominent problem lies ahead of model decomposition methods when there are similar scattering models for a decomposition scheme. It is difficult to separate the polarization power of similar scattering mechanisms reasonably and robustly. Therefore, in this paper, we first analyze the necessity of orthogonality between scattering models. Following this, we propose two mutually orthogonal rank-1 scattering models, which can degenerate to mostly current scattering models. The orthogonality and adaptability of scattering models are considered in the model derivation. Simulated PolSAR data, real ALOS-2/PALSAR-2, GF-3, and E-SAR data are selected to validate the proposed method. As shown by the results, first, the proposed method enhances the double-bounce scattering contribution in urban areas and maintains the volume-scattering contribution in vegetation areas because it separates the polarization power of different scattering mechanisms more reasonably. Second, the proposed method is powerful in the robust interpretation of different ground targets, resulting from the orthogonality of scattering models. Polarimetric decomposition is an effective way to analyze the scattering mechanism of targets in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images. However, the analysis of urban areas is frequently a challenge. Most decomposition methods use a rotated dihedral derived via rotation matrix to model the double-bounce scattering mechanism of buildings. However, according to electromagnetic theory, the existing dihedral model is not accurate, especially when the orientation angle of the dihedral is large. Therefore, the double-bounce scattering contribution in urban areas with large orientation angles will be difficult to extract. To address this problem, based on physical optics (PO) and geometric optics (GO), the interaction process of electromagnetic waves and the rotational dihedral is analyzed, and then a modified rotational dihedral model (MRDM) is proposed for the accurate representation of the rotational double-bounce scattering mechanism. Accordingly, MRDM is introduced to a five-component decomposition method (MRDM-5SD) to analyze the scattering components in an urban area. The validity of MRDM-5SD is demonstrated using several data sets. The experimental results show that the power contributions of double-bounce scattering in urban areas with large orientation angles increase by using MRDM-5SD. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) has been widely used in the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of urban areas using the multi-baseline (MB) SAR data. For urban scenarios, the MB SAR data are often acquired by repeat-pass using the spaceborne SAR system. Such a data stack generally has long time baselines, which result in different atmospheric disturbances of the data acquired by different tracks. These factors can lead to the presence of phase errors (PEs). PEs are multiplicative noise for observation data, which can cause diffusion and defocus in TomoSAR imaging and seriously affect the extraction of target 3D information. In this paper, we combine the methods of the block-building network (BBN) and phase gradient autofocus (PGA) to propose a novel phase compensation method called BBN-PGA. The BBN-PGA method can effectively and efficiently compensate for PEs of the MB SAR data over a wide area and improve the accuracy of 3D reconstruction of urban areas. The applicability of this proposed BBN-PGA method is proved by using simulated data and the spaceborne MB SAR data acquired by the TerraSAR-X satellite over an area in Barcelona, Spain. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is a vital tool for flood mapping due to its capability to acquire images day and night in almost any weather and to penetrate through cloud cover. In rural areas, SAR backscatter intensity can be used to detect flooded areas accurately; however, the complexity of urban structures makes flood mapping in urban areas a challenging task. In this study, we examine the synergistic use of SAR simulated reflectivity maps and Polarimetric and Interferometric SAR (PolInSAR) features in the improvement of flood mapping in urban environments. We propose a machine learning model employing simulated and PolInSAR features derived from TerraSAR-X images along with five auxiliary features, namely elevation, slope, aspect, distance from the river, and land-use/land-cover that are well-known to contribute to flood mapping. A total of 2450 data points have been used to build and evaluate the model over four different areas with different vegetation and urban density. The results indicated that by using PolInSAR and SAR simulated reflectivity maps together with five auxiliary features, a classification overall accuracy of 93.1% in urban areas was obtained, representing a 9.6% improvement over using the five auxiliary features alone. Since the deployment of EO resources into orbit, archaeological surveys have made extensive use of space imaging. In particular, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data have often proved useful in many geomorphic investigations. In this study, we tested the potential of SAR/InSAR datasets for archaeological applications, which were conducted for southern Mesopotamia. While identifying the embedded human settlements, we attempted to reconstruct the paleoclimatic conditions and the paleotopography imprinted onto contemporary geography as key features of the environmental context of ancient human activity. First, Sentinel-1 and PALSAR-2 SAR/InSAR time-series data were compiled and used to identify the paleoshoreline and other ancient hydrologic backgrounds in southern Mesopotamia. We defined regions of interest (ROI) based on this and further used a rotational decomposition of the time-series signature to detect shallow subsurface features in predefined ROI. SAR/InSAR data processing identified ancient channels and shorelines that match the historical/archaeological records of key Sumerian cities. Our findings in Eridu and Larsa-Uruk-Umma, as well as their hydrological contexts, are archaeologically significant and suggest the need for more ground surveys. In terms of global coverage and resolving power, this study shows that the potential of SAR/InSAR for probing the background environment of ancient civilizations is comparable to high-resolution commercial optical imaging. As a representative city located in the Loess Plateau region of China, Lanzhou is affected by various environmental and engineering factors, such as precipitation, earthquake subsidence, and building construction, which all lead to frequent geological disasters. Obtaining information on land subsidence over a long time series helps us grasp the patterns of change in various types of ground hazard. In this paper, we present the results of using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) to monitor land subsidence in the main urban area of Lanzhou from 26 October 2014 to 12 December 2021. The main influential factors leading to subsidence were analyzed and combined via machine learning simulation to assess the land subsidence risk grade distribution of a building unit. The results show that the annual average deformation rate in Lanzhou ranged from −18.74 to 12.78 mm/yr. Linear subsidence dominated most subsidence areas in Lanzhou during the monitoring period. The subsidence areas were mainly distributed along the Yellow River, the railway, and villages and towns on the edges of urban areas. The main areas where subsidence occurred were the eastern part of Chengguan District, the railway line in Anning District, and the southern parts of Xigu District and Qilihe urban area, accounting for 38.8, 43.5, 32.5, and 51.8% of the area of their respective administrative districts, respectively. The random forest model analysis results show that the factors influencing surface subsidence in Lanzhou were, in order of importance, precipitation, the distribution of faults, the lithology of strata, high-rise buildings, and the distance to the river and railway. Lanzhou experienced excessive groundwater drainage in some areas from 2015 to 2017, with a 1 m drop in groundwater and 14.61 mm surface subsidence in the most critical areas. At the same time, extensive subsidence occurred in areas with highly compressible loess ground and most railway sections, reaching a maximum of −11.68 mm/yr. More than half of the super-tall building areas also showed settlement funnels. The area at a very high risk of future subsidence in Lanzhou covers 22.02 km2, while the high-subsidence-risk area covers 54.47 km2. The areas at greatest risk of future subsidence are Chengguan District and Qilihe District. The city contains a total of 51,163 buildings in the very high-risk area, including about 44.57% of brick-and-timber houses, 51.36% of old housing, and 52.78% of super-tall buildings, which are at especially high risk of subsidence, threatening the lives and properties of the population. Traditional bathymetry LiDAR (light detection and ranging) onboard manned and/or unmanned airborne systems cannot operate in the context of narrow rivers in urban areas with high buildings and in mountainous areas with high peaks. Therefore, this study presents a prototype of a lightweight bathymetry LiDAR onboard an unmanned shipborne vehicle (called "GQ-Cor 19"). The GQ-Cor 19 system primarily includes an emitting optical module, a receiving optical module, control module, detection module, high-speed A/D sampling module, and data processing system. Considering that the "GQ-Cor 19" is extremely close to the water surface, various new technical challenges are encountered, such as significant laser scattering energy from the surface of the water, which saturates signals received by the photomultiplier tube detector. Therefore, this study presents various new technical solutions, including (1) an improved Bresenham algorithm, (2) a small and lightweight receiving optical system with a split-field method, and (3) a data acquisition module with a high-speech A/D collector. Following a series of different experimental verifications, the results demonstrate that the new generation of single-band LiDAR onboard an unmanned shipborne vehicle can swiftly measure the underwater depth, and the maximum measurement depth is more than 25 m. The new European Ground Motion Service (EGMS) opens a new prospect in the study of the ground deformation phenomena influencing structures and infrastructures, at regional scale, exploiting the huge archives of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images acquired from Sentinel-1 satellites. The research is currently oriented toward developing new methodologies to exploit this great volume of data, the management of which is difficult and onerous in terms of time. A new methodology for the monitoring of the deformations of urban settlements, based on the application of the ADAfinder tool to EGMS measure points, is proposed in this work. It targets the semi-automatic extraction of active deformation areas (ADA), given in the form of maps, with the goal to identify the buildings affected by displacements above a given threshold among all the buildings included in the investigated area. This allows a smart selection of the buildings needing insights about their condition through on-site monitoring or inspections, providing real support for the management of the urban areas. The proposed methodology is applied to two different case study areas in the city of Barcelona (Spain): the Eixample, in the heart of the city, and the Zona Franca, an industrial area near to the harbor. Mapping urban areas from space is a complex task involving the definition of what should be considered as part of an urban agglomerate beyond the built-up features, thus modelling the transition of a city into the surrounding landscape. In this paper, a new technique to map urban areas using multitemporal synthetic aperture radar data is presented. The proposed methodology exploits innovative RGB composites in combination with self-organizing map (SOM) clustering and object-based image analysis. In particular, the clustered product is used to extract a coarse urban area map, which is then refined using object-based processing. In this phase, Delaunay triangulation and the spatial relationship between the identified urban regions are used to model the urban–rural gradient between a city and the surrounding landscape. The technique has been tested in different scenarios representative of structurally different cities in Italy and Germany. The quality of the obtained products is assessed by comparison with the Urban Atlas of the European Environmental Agency, showing good agreement with the adopted reference data despite their different taxonomies. Building reconstruction using high-resolution tomographic synthetic aperture radar (TomoSAR) point clouds has been very attractive in numerous applications, such as urban planning and dynamic city modeling. However, for side-looking TomoSAR, it is a challenge to reconstruct the obscured backs of buildings using traditional single-bounce scattering-based methods. It comes to our attention that the higher-order scattering points in airborne array TomoSAR point clouds may provide rich information on the backs of buildings. In this paper, the fourfold bounce (FB) scattering model of combined buildings in airborne array TomoSAR is derived, which not only explains the cause of FB scattering but also gives the distribution pattern of FB scattering points. Furthermore, a novel FB scattering-based method for the reconstruction of building backs is proposed. First, a two-step geometric constraint is used to detect the candidate FB scattering points. Subsequently, the FB scattering points are further detected by seed point selection and density estimation in the radar coordinate system. Finally, the backs of buildings can be reconstructed using the footprint inverted from the FB scattering points and the height information of the illuminated facades. To verify the FB scattering model and the effectiveness of the proposed method, the results from the simulated point clouds and the real airborne array TomoSAR point clouds are presented. Compared with the traditional roof point-based methods, the outstanding advantage of the proposed method is that it allows for the high-precision reconstruction of building backs, even in the case of poor roof points. Damage mapping using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery has been studied in recent decades to support rapid response to natural disasters. Many researches have been developing coherent and incoherent change detection. However, their performances can vary depending on the types of the damages, the characteristics of the scatterers and the corresponding capability of algorithms. In particular, the coherence-based methods have been used as promising detectors over urban areas where high coherences are observed, but their detection accuracies still remain controversial over the area where low coherences are mainly observed such as the 2018 Hokkaido landslides. In order to understand the characteristics of landslide (damage) detectors for low-coherence areas and find an alternative and complementary method, we designed the coherence difference, coherence normalized difference, log-ratio, intensity correlation difference, and normalized differences of the intensity correlation assuming limited availability of dataset, and also developed multi-temporal algorithms using the coherence, intensity, and intensity correlation. They were tested and evaluated using multiple polygons extracted from aerial photos. We were able to observe that the multi-temporal intensity correlation method has the potential to detect the landslides over the low coherence region and all types of land uses. SAR tomography (TomoSAR) extends SAR interferometry (InSAR) to image a complex 3D scene with multiple scatterers within the same SAR cell. The phase calibration method and the super-resolution reconstruction method play a crucial role in 3D TomoSAR imaging from multi-baseline SAR stacks, and they both influence the accuracy of the 3D SAR tomographic imaging results. This paper presents a systematic processing method for 3D SAR tomography imaging. Moreover, with the newly released TanDEM-X 12 m DEM, this study proposes a new phase calibration method based on SAR InSAR and DEM error estimation with the super-resolution reconstruction compressive sensing (CS) method for 3D TomoSAR imaging using COSMO-SkyMed Spaceborne SAR data. The test, fieldwork, and results validation were executed at Zipingpu Dam, Dujiangyan, Sichuan, China. After processing, the 1 m resolution TomoSAR elevation extraction results were obtained. Against the terrestrial Lidar 'truth' data, the elevation results were shown to have an accuracy of 0.25 ± 1.04 m and a RMSE of 1.07 m in the dam area. The results and their subsequent validation demonstrate that the X band data using the CS method are not suitable for forest structure reconstruction, but are fit for purpose for the elevation extraction of manufactured facilities including buildings in the urban area. Multitemporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images have been widely used for change detection and monitoring of the environment owing to their competency under all weather conditions. However, owing to speckle backgrounds and strong reflections, change detection in urban areas is challenging. In this study, to automatically extract changed objects, we developed a model that integrated change detection and object extraction in multiple Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite-5 (KOMPSAT-5) images. Initially, two arbitrary L1A-level SAR images were input into the proposed model, and after pre-processing, such as radio calibration and coordinate system processing, change detection was performed. Subsequently, the desired targets were automatically extracted from the change detection results. Finally, the model obtained images of the extraction targets and metadata, such as date and location. Noise was removed by applying scale-adaptive modification to the generated difference image during the change detection process, and the detection accuracy was improved by emphasizing the occurrence of the change. After polygonizing the pixel groups of the change detection map in the target extraction process, the morphology-based object filtering technique was applied to minimize the false detection rate. Flood masks are among the most common remote sensing products, used for rapid crisis information and as input for hydraulic and impact models. Despite the high relevance of such products, vegetated and urban areas are still unreliably mapped and are sometimes even excluded from analysis. The information content of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is limited in these areas due to the side-looking imaging geometry of radar sensors and complex interactions of the microwave signal with trees and urban structures. Classification from SAR data can only be optimized to reduce false positives, but cannot avoid false negatives in areas that are essentially unobservable to the sensor, for example, due to radar shadows, layover, speckle and other effects. We therefore propose to treat satellite-based flood masks as intermediate products with true positives, and unlabeled cells instead of negatives. This corresponds to the input of a positive-unlabeled (PU) learning one-class classifier (OCC). Assuming that flood extent is at least partially explainable by topography, we present a novel procedure to estimate the true extent of the flood, given the initial mask, by using the satellite-based products as input to a PU OCC algorithm learned on topographic features. Additional rainfall data and distance to buildings had only minor effect on the models in our experiments. All three of the tested initial flood masks were considerably improved by the presented procedure, with obtainable increases in the overall κ score ranging from 0.2 for a high quality initial mask to 0.7 in the best case for a standard emergency response product. Remote sensing, particularly using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, can be an effective tool in detecting and assessing the area and amount of building damages caused by earthquake or tsunami. Several studies have provided experimental evidence for the importance of polarimetric SAR observations in building damage detection and assessment, particularly caused by a tsunami. This study aims to evaluate the practical applicability of the polarimetric SAR observations to building damage caused by the direct ground-shaking of an earthquake. The urban areas heavily damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Japan have been investigated by using the polarimetric PALSAR-2 data acquired in pre- and post-earthquake conditions. Several polarimetric change detection approaches, such as the changes of polarimetric scattering powers, the matrix dissimilarity measures, and changes of the radar scattering mechanisms, were examined. Optimal damage indicators in the presence of significant natural changes, and a novel change detection method by the fuzzy-based fusion of polarimetric damage indicators are proposed. The accuracy analysis results show that the proposed automatic classification method can successfully detect the selected damaged areas with a detection rate of 90.9% and false-alarm rate of 1.3%. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations are widely used in emergency response for flood mapping and monitoring. However, the current operational services are mainly focused on flood in rural areas and flooded urban areas are less considered. In practice, urban flood mapping is challenging due to the complicated backscattering mechanisms in urban environments and in addition to SAR intensity other information is required. This paper introduces an unsupervised method for flood detection in urban areas by synergistically using SAR intensity and interferometric coherence under the Bayesian network fusion framework. It leverages multi-temporal intensity and coherence conjunctively to extract flood information of varying flooded landscapes. The proposed method is tested on the Houston (US) 2017 flood event with Sentinel-1 data and Joso (Japan) 2015 flood event with ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 data. The flood maps produced by the fusion of intensity and coherence and intensity alone are validated by comparison against high-resolution aerial photographs. The results show an overall accuracy of 94.5% (93.7%) and a kappa coefficient of 0.68 (0.60) for the Houston case, and an overall accuracy of 89.6% (86.0%) and a kappa coefficient of 0.72 (0.61) for the Joso case with the fusion of intensity and coherence (only intensity). The experiments demonstrate that coherence provides valuable information in addition to intensity in urban flood mapping and the proposed method could be a useful tool for urban flood mapping tasks. In green urban areas, the allergenic factor is important when selecting trees to improve the quality of life of the population. An application of laser imaging detection and ranging (LiDAR) in building information modelling (BIM) is the capture of geo-referenced geometric information of the environment. This study presents the process of digitalisation of a green infrastructure inventory based on the geolocation and bioparameters of the cypress species. The aerobiological index (IUGZA) was estimated by developing green infrastructure BIM models at different detail levels and with a new BIM dimension (6D) for the urban environment. The novelty of the study is the modelling of urban information for evaluating the potential environmental impact related to the allergenicity of the urban green infrastructure using LiDAR through BIM. The measurements of cypress trees based on bioparameters and distances were applied to the IUGZA. Land subsidence is a global issue and researchers from all over the world are keen to know the causes of deformation and its further influences. This paper reports the findings from time series InSAR (TS-InSAR) results over the Southern Coalfield, Australia using both ALOS-1 PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar) and ENVISAT ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) datasets. TS-InSAR has been applied to both rural and urban areas with great success, but very few of them have been applied to regions affected by underground mining activities. The TS-InSAR analysis exploited in this paper is based on GEOS-ATSA, and Measurement Point (MP) pixels are selected according to different geophysical features. Three experiment sites with different geological settings within the study zone are analysed: (1) Wollongong city, which is a relatively stable area; (2) Tahmoor town, a small town affected by underground mining activities; and (3) the Appin underground mining site, a region containing multiple underground mining activities. The TS-InSAR results show that the performance of both C-band and L-band is equally good overWollongong, where the subsidence gradient is not significant and most subsidence rates are between -10 mm·yr-1 to 10 mm·yr-1. However, over the Tahmoor and Appin sites, difference in performances has been observed. Since the maximum displacement gradients that can be detected are different for L-band and C-band-based TS-InSAR methods, some rapid changes could cause the TS-InSAR to fail to estimate the correct displacements. It is well known that L-band can perform better than C-band, especially in underground mining regions and mining-affected regions where the deformation rate is much higher than city areas because of its wavelength. Due to incomprehensive and inaccurate scattering modeling, the state-of-the-art polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) model-based target decompositions are incapable of effectively depicting the scattering mechanism of obliquely oriented urban areas. In this paper, a seven-component model-based decomposition scheme is proposed by constructing several sophisticated scattering models. First, an eigenvalue-based obliquely-oriented dihedral scattering model is presented to reasonably distribute the co-polarization and cross-polarization scattering powers in obliquely oriented urban areas, thus accurately characterizing the urban scattering. Second, the ±45° oriented dipole and ±45° quarter-wave reflector scattering models are incorporated for the purpose of accounting for the real and imaginary components of the T 13 element in the coherency matrix so as to fully utilize polarimetric information. Finally, according to their mathematical forms, several strategies for model parameter solutions are designed, and the seven-component decomposition is fulfilled. Experimental results conducted on different PolSAR data demonstrate that the proposed method considerably improves the PolSAR scattering interpretation in a more physical manner compared to other existing model-based decomposition, which can be applied for urban area detection, classification, and other urban planning applications. Multi-temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MT-InSAR) has been widely used for ground motion identification and monitoring over large-scale areas, due to its large spatial coverage and high accuracy. However, automatically locating and assessing the state of the ground motion from the massive Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) measurements is not easy. Utilizing the spatial-temporal characteristics of surface deformation on the basis of the Small Baseline Subsets InSAR (SBAS-InSAR) measurements, this study develops an improved method to locate potential unstable or dangerous regions, using the spatial velocity gradation and the temporal evolution trend of surface displacements in large-scale areas. This method is applied to identify the potential geohazard areas in a mountainous region in northwest China (Lajia Town in Qinghai province) using 73 and 71 Sentinel-1 images from the ascending and descending orbits, respectively, and an urban area (Dongguan City in Guangdong province) in south China using 32 Sentinel-1 images from the ascending orbit. In the mountainous area, 23 regions with potential landslide hazards have been identified, most of which have high to very high instability levels. In addition, the instability is the highest at the center and decreases gradually outward. In the urban area, 221 potential hazards have been identified. The moderate to high instability level areas account for the largest proportion, and they are concentrated in the farmland irrigation areas, and construction areas. In urban areas, deformation of transportation infrastructures may lead to serious safety accidents. Timely and accurate monitoring of the structural deformation is critical for prevention of transportation accidents and assurance of construction quality, particularly in areas with regional land subsidence, such as the city of Beijing. In this study, we proposed a method for the detection of seasonal deformation of highway overpasses using the integration of persistent scatterers Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) techniques and seasonal indices, i.e., deformation concentration degree (DCD) and deformation concentration period (DCP) indices. Taking eastern Beijing urban area as a case study area, we first used the PS-InSAR technique to derive time series surface deformation based on 55 TerraSAR-X images during 2010–2016. Then, we proposed DCD and DCP indices to characterize seasonal deformation of 25 highway overpasses in the study area, with DCD representing to what degree the annual deformation is distributed in a year, and DCP representing the period on which deformation concentrates in the year. Our results showed that the maximum annual deformation rate reached −141.3 mm/year in Beijing urban area, and the PS-InSAR measurements agreed well with levelling measurements (R2 > 0.97). For PS pixels with DCD ≥ 0.3, the monthly deformation showed obvious seasonal patterns with deformation values during some months greater than those during the other months. DCP revealed that the settlement during autumn and winter was more serious than that in spring and summer. The seasonal patterns seemed to be related to the location, structure, and construction age of the overpasses. The upper-level overpasses, the newly constructed overpasses, and those located in the subsidence area (rate < −40 mm/year) tended to show a greater seasonal pattern. The demand for mobile laser scanning in urban areas has grown in recent years. Mobile-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology can be used to collect high-precision digital information on city roads and building façades. However, due to the small size of curbs, the information that can be used for curb detection is limited. Moreover, occlusion may cause the extraction method unable to correctly capture the curb area. This paper presents the development of an algorithm for extracting street curbs from mobile-based LiDAR point cloud data to support city managers in street deformation monitoring and urban street reconstruction. The proposed method extracts curbs in three complex scenarios: vegetation covering the curbs, curved street curbs, and occlusion curbs by vehicles, pedestrians. This paper combined both spatial information and geometric information, using the spatial attributes of the road boundary. It can adapt to different heights and different road boundary structures. Analyses of real study sites show the rationality and applicability of this method for obtaining accurate results in curb-based street extraction from mobile-based LiDAR data. The overall performance of road curb extraction is fully discussed, and the results are shown to be promising. This paper deals with a geophysical survey carried out in some critical urban areas of the historical city of Matera (Southern Italy). Matera has a very complex shallower stratigraphy characterized by both anthropic and natural "targets" and is affected by geological instability. Therefore, Matera represents an ideal and very challenging outdoor laboratory for testing novel approaches for near-surface explorations in urban areas. Here, we present the results of a near-surface survey carried out by jointly applying Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) methods. The survey was implemented in three different critical zones within the urban area of Matera (Piazza Duomo, Piazza San Giovanni, Villa dell'Unità d'Italia). These test sites are of great interest for archaeological and architectonical studies and are affected by ground instability phenomena due to the presence of voids, cavities and other anthropic structures. The effectiveness of the survey was enhanced by the exploitation of advanced 3D tomographic approaches, which allowed to achieve 3D representation of the investigated underground and obtain information in terms of both the location and the geometry of buried objects and structures and the characterization of shallow geological layers. The results of the surveys are now under study (or have attracted the interest) of the Municipality in order to support smart cities programs and activities for a better management of the underground space. Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) images containing cities may exhibit misclassified areas when using polarimetric decompositions. Several articles relate this problem to the effects of orientation between the facades of buildings and the acquisition trajectory. Materials also play a role in polarimetric behavior. This paper deals with this combined effect of material and orientation. It analyzes different sets of data, airborne or space-borne, at L-, C- and X-bands, and for different orientation angles. It shows that considering dielectric dihedral rather than metallic in the polarimetric mechanism of double-bounce has a very important impact on the differences of intensities between the channels HH and VV. This difference is very important for small angles of orientation, and then decreases for large angles. Furthermore, the curves of the ratios between polarimetric intensities as a function of the orientation angle vary little with the materials and the frequencies encountered in all the scenarios envisaged. The signal of the ratio VV/HH raises a plateau around −1 dB for orientations higher than 30°. We also observe a plateau for HV/HH, but with a value around −5 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globally, major cities are experiencing fast settlement growth, which threatens the equilibrium of socio-ecosystems. In Pakistan, Abbottabad city in particular is experiencing fast urban growth. The main source of daily water usage for the population in these types of cities is groundwater (tube–wells). Excessive pumping and the high need for ground water for the local community are affecting the subsurface sustainability. In this study, the persistent scatterer interferometry synthetic aperture radar (PSInSAR) technique with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired from the Sentinel-1 were used to monitor ground subsidence in Abbottabad City, Northern Pakistan. To estimate the ground subsidence in Abbottabad City, SARPROZ software was employed to process a series of Sentinel-1 images, acquired from March 2017 to September 2019, along both descending and ascending orbit tracks. The subsidence observed in the results shows a significant increase from 2017 to 2019. The subsidence map shows that, during 2017, the subsidence was −30 mm/year and about −85 mm/year in 2018. While during 2019, the subsidence reached −150 mm/year. Thus, it has seen that, in the study area, the subsidence during these years increased with mean subsidence 60 mm/year. The overall trend of subsidence showed considerably high values in the center of the city, while areas away from the center of the city experienced low subsidence. Overall, the adopted methodology can be used successfully for detecting, mapping, and monitoring land surfaces vulnerable to subsidence. In the absence of systematic structural monitoring to support adequate maintenance standards, many existing infrastructures may reach unacceptable quality levels during their life cycle, resulting in significant damage and even potential failure. The metropolitan area of the Gulf of Salerno (Italy), served by a complex multimodal transport network connecting the port area to the roads and railways surrounding the urban area, represents an important industrial and commercial hub at the local and international scale. This particular scenario, developed in a complex morphological and geological context, has led to the interference and overlapping of the transport network (highway, railway, main and secondary roads) that run through the piedmont area north of the port. Given the relevance of the area, our research aims to highlight the capabilities of the persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) technique, belonging to the group of differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SAR), to extract space–temporal series of displacements on ground points or artifacts with millimeter accuracy useful to understand ongoing deformation processes. By using archived data from the European Space Agency missions, i.e., ERS1/2 (European remote-sensing satellite) and ENVISAT (environmental satellite), and the most recent data from COSMO-SkyMed constellations, it was possible to collect a 28-year dataset that was used to spatially analyze displacement patterns at a site-specific scale to check the stability of viaducts and embankments, and on a larger scale to understand the activity of the surrounding slopes. Despite the different resolution and subsequently the ground density, the analysis of the different datasets showed a spatiotemporal consistency in the displacement patterns that concerned two subareas showing significant annual velocity trends, one northeast of the city and the second in the port area. The analysis presented in this paper highlights how a complex geologic area, combining slope movements and various fault systems, could be a major concern for the stability of the overlying infrastructure and also the role that a PSI analysis can play in remotely monitoring their behavior over long periods of time. Automatic extraction of power lines using airborne LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data has been one of the most important topics for electric power management. However, this is very challenging over complex urban areas, where power lines are in close proximity to buildings and trees. In this paper, we presented a new, semi-automated and versatile framework that consists of four steps: (i) power line candidate point filtering, (ii) local neighborhood selection, (iii) spatial structural feature extraction, and (iv) SVM classification. We introduced the power line corridor direction for candidate point filtering and multi-scale slant cylindrical neighborhood for spatial structural features extraction. In a detailed evaluation involving seven scales and four types for local neighborhood selection, 26 structural features, and two datasets, we demonstrated that the use of multi-scale slant cylindrical neighborhood for individual 3D points significantly improved the power line classification. The experiments indicated that precision, recall and quality rate of power line classification is more than 98%, 98% and 97%, respectively. The filtering of multi-pass synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) stack data is a necessary preprocessing step utilized to improve the accuracy of the object-based three-dimensional information inversion in urban area. InSAR stack data is composed of multi-temporal homogeneous data, which is regarded as a third-order tensor. The InSAR tensor can be filtered by data fusion, i.e., tensor decomposition, and these filters keep balance in the noise elimination and the fringe details preservation, especially with abrupt fringe change, e.g., the edge of urban structures. However, tensor decomposition based on batch processing cannot deal with few newly acquired interferograms filtering directly. The filtering of dynamic InSAR tensor is the inevitable challenge when processing InSAR stack data, where dynamic InSAR tensor denotes the size of InSAR tensor increases continuously due to the acquisition of new interferograms. Therefore, based on the online CANDECAMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition, we propose an online filter to fuse data and process the dynamic InSAR tensor, named OLCP-InSAR, which performs well especially for the urban area. In this method, CP rank is utilized to measure the tensor sparsity, which can maintain the structural features of the InSAR tensor. Additionally, CP rank estimation is applied as an important step to improve the robustness of Online CP decomposition - InSAR(OLCP-InSAR). Importing CP rank and outlier's position as prior information, the filter fuses the noisy interferograms and decomposes the InSAR tensor to acquire the low rank information, i.e., filtered result. Moreover, this method can not only operate on tensor model, but also efficiently filter the new acquired interferogram as matrix model with the assistance of chosen low rank information. Compared with other tensor-based filters, e.g., high order robust principal component analysis (HoRPCA) and Kronecker-basis-representation multi-pass SAR interferometry (KBR-InSAR), and the widespread traditional filters operating on a single interferometric pair, e.g., Goldstein, non-local synthetic aperture radar (NL-SAR), non-local InSAR (NL-InSAR), and InSAR nonlocal block-matching 3-D (InSAR-BM3D), the effectiveness and robustness of OLCP-InSAR are proved in simulated and real InSAR stack data. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) polarimetric datasets are widely used in the detection and classification of urban areas. Most methods used today are based on the decomposition of fully polarimetric SAR data, which allows for the extraction of physical information about the nature of the medium and the application of proper classification methods. According to the theory, the main and predominant backscattering mechanism for buildings is double bounce. However, when analyzing urban environments, the observed predominant backscatter may differ from theory depending on many aspects. In this paper, we analyze fully polarimetric ALOS PALSAR data for various cities located on different continents, proving that the theory does not hold for most cases. There are many factors that have an impact on the detected backscatter mechanism, and the theoretical principle of predominant double bounce in urban areas can be met only under specific conditions. These factors are, among others, the orientation of the buildings, the dimensions of the streets, the type of construction (i.e., numerous planes on the roof), etc. This paper also mentions the canonical example of San Francisco, widely analyzed in the literature, as a case showing the impact of building deorientation on double bounce scattering. This area of interest is also discussed in terms of the impact of SAR data resolution on the detection of specific backscatter mechanisms. The findings of this work are very useful for increasing the awareness of the utilization of classification approaches where only pixels with double bounce backscatter mechanisms are classified as urban areas. Moreover, the article lists factors that should be taken into consideration when performing urban area detection based only on polarimetric data and standard algorithms, such as street and building orientation, building heights, and structures. Landslides, often a side effect of mining activities, pose a significant risk to humans and infrastructures such as urban areas, power lines, and dams. Operational ground motion monitoring can help detect the spatial pattern of surface changes and their evolution over time. In this technical note, a commercial, cost-effective method combining a network of geotechnical surface sensors with the InSAR data was reported for the first time to accurately monitor surface displacement. The correlation of both data sets is demonstrated in the Gediminas Castle testbed, where slope failure events were detected. Two specific events were analyzed, and possible causes proposed. The combination of techniques allows one to detect the precursors of the events and characterize the consequences of the failures in different areas in proximity to the castle walls, since the solution allows for the confirmation of long-term drifts and sudden movements in real time. The application of SAR tomography (TomoSAR) on the urban infrastructure and other man-made buildings has gained increasing popularity with the development of modern high-resolution spaceborne satellites. Urban tomography focuses on the separation of the overlaid targets within one azimuth-range resolution cell, and on the reconstruction of their reflectivity profiles. In this work, we build on the existing methods of compressive sensing (CS) and generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), and develop a multiple scatterers detection method named CS-GLRT to automatically recognize the number of scatterers superimposed within a single pixel as well as to reconstruct the backscattered reflectivity profiles of the detected scatterers. The proposed CS-GLRT adopts a two-step strategy. In the first step, an L1-norm minimization is carried out to give a robust estimation of the candidate positions pixel by pixel with super-resolution. In the second step, a multiple hypothesis test is implemented in the GLRT to achieve model order selection, where the mapping matrix is constrained within the afore-selected columns, namely, within the candidate positions, and the parameters are estimated by least square (LS) method. Numerical experiments on simulated data were carried out, and the presented results show its capability of separating the closely located scatterers with a quasi-constant false alarm rate (QCFAR), as well as of obtaining an estimation accuracy approaching the Cramer–Rao Low Bound (CRLB). Experiments on real data of Spotlight TerraSAR-X show that CS-GLRT allows detecting single scatterers with high density, distinguishing a considerable number of double scatterers, and even detecting triple scatterers. The estimated results agree well with the ground truth and help interpret the true structure of the complex or buildings studied in the SAR images. It should be noted that this method is especially suitable for urban areas with very dense infrastructure and man-made buildings, and for datasets with tightly-controlled baseline distribution. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) is a multibaseline interferometric technique that estimates the power spectrum pattern (PSP) along the perpendicular to the line-of-sight (PLOS) direction. TomoSAR achieves the separation of individual scatterers in layover areas, allowing for the 3D representation of urban zones. These scenes are typically characterized by buildings of different heights, with layover between the facades of the higher structures, the rooftop of the smaller edifices and the ground surface. Multilooking, as required by most spectral estimation techniques, reduces the azimuth-range spatial resolution, since it is accomplished through the averaging of adjacent values, e.g., via Boxcar filtering. Consequently, with the aim of avoiding the spatial mixture of sources due to multilooking, this article proposes a novel methodology to perform single-look TomoSAR over urban areas. First, a robust version of Capon is applied to focus the TomoSAR data, being robust against the rank-deficiencies of the data covariance matrices. Afterward, the recovered PSP is refined using statistical regularization, attaining resolution enhancement, suppression of artifacts and reduction of the ambiguity levels. The capabilities of the proposed methodology are demonstrated by means of strip-map airborne data of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), acquired by the uninhabited aerial vehicle SAR (UAVSAR) system over the urban area of Munich, Germany in 2015. Rapid and accurate updating of urban land areas is of great significance to the study of environmental changes. Although there are many urban land products (ULPs) at present, such as GlobeLand30, Global Urban Footprint (GUF), and Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL), these products are all static data of a certain year, and are not able to provide high-accuracy updating of urban land areas. In addition, the accuracies of these data and their application value in the update of urban land areas need to be urgently proven. Therefore, we proposed an approach to quickly and accurately update urban land areas in the Kuala Lumpur region of Malaysia, and assessed the accuracies of urban land products in different urban landscape patterns. The approach combined the advantages of multi-source data including existing ULPs, OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI), and Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) images. Three main steps make up this approach. First, the urban land training samples were selected in the urban areas consistent with GlobeLand30, GUF, and GHSL, and samples of bare land, vegetation, water bodies, and road auxiliary data were obtained by GlobeLand30 and OSM. Then, the random forest was used to extract urban land areas according to the object's features in the OLI and PALSAR images. Last, we assessed the accuracies of GlobeLand30, GUF, GHSL, and the results of this study (ULC) by using point and area validation methods. The results showed that the ULC had the highest overall accuracy of 90.18% among the four products and could accurately depict urban land in different urban landscapes. The GHSL was the second most accurate of the four products, and the accuracy in urban areas was much higher than that in rural areas. The GUF had many omission errors in urban land areas and could not delineate a large area of complete spatial information of urban land, but it could effectively extract scattered residential land with small patches. GlobeLand30 had the lowest accuracy and could only express rough, large-scale urban land. This paper provides the first wide-area Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) survey of the whole eastern Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (42,200 km2). The aims are to identify ground deformation hotspots within major urbanized areas and rural valleys, establish baselines in geothermal exploration sites, and analyze deformation at geothermal exploitation sites and its relationship with energy production. The whole 2003–2010 ENVISAT C-band SAR archive available over the region was processed with the Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) InSAR method to retrieve over 840,000 coherent targets and estimate their ground displacement rates and time series. Land subsidence hotspots due to aquifer drawdown are found within the city of Puebla (up to −53 mm/year vertical rates, groundwater pumping for industrial use), Tlaxcala and Apizaco (−17 mm/year, industrial and public), the valley of Tecamachalco (−22 mm/year, agricultural), Tulancingo (−55 mm/year, public, industrial and agricultural), and in the eastern Mexico City metropolitan area (−44 mm/year, agricultural). The baseline for the Acoculco caldera complex shows widespread ground stability. Conversely, localized subsidence patterns of −5 to −10 mm/year exist around Las Derrumbadas and Cerro Pinto in the Serdán-Oriental basin, due to intense groundwater pumping for agriculture. A well-defined land subsidence area with −11 mm/year maximum rates is found at Los Humeros volcanic complex within Los Potreros collapse, correlating well with energy production infrastructure location and historical steam production rates. Field surveys carried out in Acoculco and Los Humeros in 2018 provide supporting evidence for the identification of hydrothermal manifestations, and understanding of the landscape and surface deformation patterns within the geothermal fields. This work focuses on the study of land subsidence processes by means of multi-temporal and multi-frequency InSAR techniques. Specifically, we retrieve the long-term evolution (2003–2018) of the creeping phenomenon producing ground fissuring in the Ciudad Guzmán (Jalisco state, Mexico) urban area. The city is located on the northern side of the Volcan de Colima area, one of the most active Mexican volcanoes. On September 21 2012, Ciudad Guzmán was struck by ground fissures of about 1.5 km of length, causing the deformation of the roads and the propagation of fissures in adjacent buildings. The field surveys showed that fissures follow the escarpments produced during the central Mexico September 19 1985 Mw 8.1 earthquake. We extended the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometric monitoring starting with the multi-temporal analysis of ENVISAT and COSMO-SkyMed datasets, allowing the monitoring of the observed subsidence phenomena affecting the Mexican city. We processed a new stack of Sentinel-1 TOPSAR acquisition mode images along both descending and ascending paths and spanning the 2016–2018 temporal period. The resulting long-term trend observed by satellites, together with data from volcanic bulletin and in situ surveys, seems to suggest that the subsidence is due to the exploitation of the aquifers and that the spatial arrangement of ground deformation is controlled by the position of buried faults. In this paper, a novel framework for the automatic extraction of road footprints from airborne LiDAR point clouds in urban areas is proposed. The extraction process consisted of three phases: The first phase is to extract road points by using the deep learning model PointNet++, where the features of the input data include not only those selected from raw LiDAR points, such as 3D coordinate values, intensity, etc., but also the digital number (DN) of co-registered images and generated geometric features to describe a strip-like road. Then, the road points from PointNet++ were post-processed based on graph-cut and constrained triangulation irregular networks, where both the commission and omission errors were greatly reduced. Finally, collinearity and width similarity were proposed to estimate the connection probability of road segments, thereby improving the connectivity and completeness of the road network represented by centerlines. Experiments conducted on the Vaihingen data show that the proposed framework outperformed others in terms of completeness and correctness; in addition, some narrower residential streets with 2 m width, which have normally been neglected by previous studies, were extracted. The completeness and the correctness of the extracted road points were 84.7% and 79.7%, respectively, while the completeness and the correctness of the extracted centerlines were 97.0% and 86.3%, respectively. Rapid, reliable, and continuous information is an essential component in disaster monitoring and management. Remote sensing data could be a solution, but often cannot provide continuous data due to an absence of global coverage and weather and daylight dependency. To overcome these challenges, this study makes use of weather and day/light independent Sentinel-1 data with a global coverage to monitor localized effects of different types of disasters using the Coherence Change-Detection (CCD) technique. Coherence maps were generated from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and used to classify areas of change and no change in six study areas. These sites are located in Syria, Puerto Rico, California, and Iran. The study areas were divided into street blocks, and the standard deviation was calculated for the coherence images for each street block over entire image stacks. The study areas were classified by land-use type to reveal the spatial variation in coherence loss after a disaster. While temporal decorrelation exhibits a general loss in coherence over time, disaster occurrence, however, indicates a significant loss in coherence after an event. The variations of each street block from the average coherence for the entire image stack, as measured by a high standard deviation after a particular disaster, is an indication of disaster induced building damage. Analyses of single-post-event polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data permit fast and convenient post-disaster damage assessment work. By analyzing valid features, damaged and undamaged buildings can be quickly classified. However, the presence of oriented buildings in the disaster area makes the classification work more challenging. Many previous works extract the damage information of the disaster area by considering oriented buildings and undamaged parallel buildings as survived buildings. However, after-effect debris may create structures with random orientation angles. In our study on the Tohoku earthquake/tsunami disaster event, we found that some damaged buildings with large building orientation angles (with respect to the satellite flight path) are grouped as oriented buildings (undamaged buildings). In this paper, we propose a new earthquake/tsunami damage assessment method, particularly for urban areas, that takes this complex situation into consideration. The proposed method solves the problems of both urban-area extraction and damaged-building identification. For urban-area extraction, the proposed combined thresholding and majority voting method can accurately discriminate between urban and foreshortening mountain areas. Meanwhile, for damaged-building identification, the proposed new unsupervised damage assessment method classifies the buildings in a disaster area according to four conditions, and it outperforms the techniques used in existing works. The analysis results and the comparison with the supervised support vector machine (SVM) classification technique show that our proposed method can produce more accurate results for damage assessment using single-post-event PolSAR data. Beijing is severely affected by land subsidence, and rapid urbanisation and building construction might accelerate the land subsidence process. Based on 39 Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) images acquired between 2003–2010, 55 TerraSAR-X images acquired between 2010–2016, and urban building information, we analysed the relationship between land subsidence and buildings at the regional, block, and building scales. The results show that the surface displacement rate in the Beijing urban area ranged from −109 mm/year to +13 mm/year between 2003–2010, and from −151 mm/year to +19 mm/year between 2010–2016; two subsidence bowls were mainly distributed in the eastern part of the Chaoyang District. The displacement rate agreed well with the levelling measurements, with an average bias of less than six mm/year. At the regional scale, the spatial pattern of land subsidence was mainly controlled by groundwater extraction, compressible layer thickness, and geological faults. Subsidence centres were located in the area around ground water funnels with a compressible layer depth of 50–70 m. The block-scale analysis demonstrated a clear correlation between the block construction age and the spatial unevenness of subsidence. The blocks constructed between 1998–2005 and after 2005 showed considerably more subsidence unevenness and temporal instability than the blocks constructed before 1998 during both time periods. The examination of the new blocks showed that the spatial unevenness increased with building volume variability. For the 16 blocks with a high building volume, variability, and subsidence unevenness, the building-scale analysis showed a positive relationship between building volume and settlement in most blocks, although the R2 was lower than 0.5. The results indicate that intense building construction in urban areas could cause differential settlement at the block scale in Beijing, while the settlement of single buildings could be influenced by the integrated effects of building volume, foundation structures, and the hydrogeological background. Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) is a useful tool for retrieving the three-dimensional structure of buildings in urban areas, especially for datasets with a high spatial resolution. However, among the previous TomoSAR estimators, some cannot retrieve the 3-D structure of objects with a high elevation resolution, some cannot maintain the spatial resolution, and some require the selection of a hyperparameter. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a new nonparametric iterative adaptive approach with a model selection tool based on the Bayesian information criterion (IAA-BIC) for the application of TomoSAR in urban areas. IAA-BIC employs weighted least squares to acquire a high elevation resolution and works well for both distributed and coherent scatterers, even with single-look. Concurrently, IAA-BIC does not require the user to make any difficult selection regarding a hyperparameter. The proposed IAA-BIC estimator was tested in simulated experiments, and the results confirmed the advantages of the IAA-BIC estimator. Moreover, the three-dimensional structure of the Hubei Science and Technology Venture building in Wuhan, China, was retrieved through the IAA-BIC method with nine very high spatial resolution TerraSAR-X images. The height estimation accuracy for this building was about 1% and 4% relative to its real height for single-look and multi-look, respectively. In addition, a comparison between the IAA-BIC estimator and some of the typical existing TomoSAR estimators (Capon, MUSIC, and compressed sensing (CS)) was also carried out. The results indicate that the IAA-BIC estimator obtains a better resolution for coherent sources than Capon and MUSIC; notably, the IAA-BIC estimator obtains a similar performance to CS, but in less computation time.
