HF radar systems form part of many operational coastal monitoring systems providing near-real-time surface currents for many useful applications. Although wave measurements have been possible with these systems for many years, they have not yet been adopted widely for operational monitoring because they have not been thought to be sufficiently accurate or reliable. However, the value of such data is beginning to be appreciated, and this is motivating more work on wave measurement with HF radar systems with many more papers on accuracy assessment and data availability appearing in the literature. In this paper, the wave measurement capability, limitations, and differences between different radar types are reviewed, and methods to assess accuracy are discussed and applied to phased array HF radar data obtained from the University of Plymouth WERA radars using the Seaview Software inversion method during April and November 2012 compared with directional buoy data. Good accuracy over a range of different wave parameters will be demonstrated. Newly available single-radar inversions are shown to be less accurate than dual-radar inversions, although they still provide useful data, and ways to improve performance are discussed. Swell and wind–sea components in the directional spectra are identified, and qualitative agreement with buoy peak parameters is demonstrated. The shoulder line is fundamental to geomorphic evolution and erosion monitoring research on the Loess Plateau, which represents the boundary between positive terrain (intergully) and negative terrain (inner gully). The existing extraction methods mainly suffer the problems of unclear geological significance, poor landform application, and low efficiency of algorithms. This paper proposes a new loess shoulder line automatic extraction method, in which topographic feature points (ridge and valley points) were used as endpoints to generate continuous profiles, and two parameters, analysis operator size (L) and filter threshold (σ), were created for shoulder point extraction from each profile. This method can be applied to complex landforms such as the continuous shoulder lines of terraces and extracts. Herein, three typical areas on the Dongzhi Plateau were selected to assess the performance of the method, and a digital elevation model (DEM) with a resolution of 5 m was used as source data. The accuracy assessment index was the Euclidean distance offset percentage (EDOP), and the original evaluation method was improved based on Structure from Motion–Multiview Stereo (SfM-MVS) technology. The experimental results showed that the average accuracy of the proposed method in the three test areas reached 89.3%, which is higher than that of the multidirectional hill-shading and P-N methods. Via testing in different areas, it could be concluded that the extraction efficiency was less affected by the area of the test region, and the approach exhibited a suitable robustness. Simultaneously, the optimal values of parameters L and σ were examined. This study increases the possibility of accurate shoulder line extraction in the large area of the Loess Plateau. Evaluating classification accuracy is a key component of the training and validation stages of thematic map production, and the choice of metric has profound implications for both the success of the training process and the reliability of the final accuracy assessment. We explore key considerations in selecting and interpreting loss and assessment metrics in the context of data imbalance, which arises when the classes have unequal proportions within the dataset or landscape being mapped. The challenges involved in calculating single, integrated measures that summarize classification success, especially for datasets with considerable data imbalance, have led to much confusion in the literature. This confusion arises from a range of issues, including a lack of clarity over the redundancy of some accuracy measures, the importance of calculating final accuracy from population-based statistics, the effects of class imbalance on accuracy statistics, and the differing roles of accuracy measures when used for training and final evaluation. In order to characterize classification success at the class level, users typically generate averages from the class-based measures. These averages are sometimes generated at the macro-level, by taking averages of the individual-class statistics, or at the micro-level, by aggregating values within a confusion matrix, and then, calculating the statistic. We show that the micro-averaged producer's accuracy (recall), user's accuracy (precision), and F1-score, as well as weighted macro-averaged statistics where the class prevalences are used as weights, are all equivalent to each other and to the overall accuracy, and thus, are redundant and should be avoided. Our experiment, using a variety of loss metrics for training, suggests that the choice of loss metric is not as complex as it might appear to be, despite the range of choices available, which include cross-entropy (CE), weighted CE, and micro- and macro-Dice. The highest, or close to highest, accuracies in our experiments were obtained by using CE loss for models trained with balanced data, and for models trained with imbalanced data, the highest accuracies were obtained by using weighted CE loss. We recommend that, since weighted CE loss used with balanced training is equivalent to CE, weighted CE loss is a good all-round choice. Although Dice loss is commonly suggested as an alternative to CE loss when classes are imbalanced, micro-averaged Dice is similar to overall accuracy, and thus, is particularly poor for training with imbalanced data. Furthermore, although macro-Dice resulted in models with high accuracy when the training used balanced data, when the training used imbalanced data, the accuracies were lower than for weighted CE. In summary, the significance of this paper lies in its provision of readers with an overview of accuracy and loss metric terminology, insight regarding the redundancy of some measures, and guidance regarding best practices. The spatial accuracy of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the images they capture play a crucial role in the mapping process. Researchers are exploring solutions that use image-based techniques such as structure from motion (SfM) to produce topographic maps using UAVs while accessing locations with extremely high accuracy and minimal surface measurements. Advancements in technology have enabled real-time kinematic (RTK) to increase positional accuracy to 1–3 times the ground sampling distance (GSD). This paper focuses on post-processing kinematic (PPK) of positional accuracy to achieve a GSD or better. To achieve this, precise satellite orbits, clock information, and UAV global navigation satellite system observation files are utilized to calculate the camera positions with the highest positional accuracy. RTK/PPK analysis is conducted to improve the positional accuracies obtained from different flight patterns and altitudes. Data are collected at altitudes of 80 and 120 meters, resulting in GSD values of 1.87 cm/px and 3.12 cm/px, respectively. The evaluation of ground checkpoints using the proposed PPK methodology with one ground control point demonstrated root mean square error values of 2.3 cm (horizontal, nadiral) and 2.4 cm (vertical, nadiral) at an altitude of 80 m, and 1.4 cm (horizontal, oblique) and 3.2 cm (vertical, terrain-following) at an altitude of 120 m. These results suggest that the proposed methodology can achieve high positional accuracy for UAV image georeferencing. The main contribution of this paper is to evaluate the PPK approach to achieve high positional accuracy with unmanned aerial vehicles and assess the effect of different flight patterns and altitudes on the accuracy of the resulting topographic maps. The new type of multi-temporal global land use data with multiple classes is able to provide information on both the different land covers and their temporal changes; furthermore, it is able to contribute to many applications, such as those involving global climate and Earth ecosystem analyses. However, the current accuracy assessment methods have two limitations regarding multi-temporal land cover data that have multiple classes. First, multi-temporal land cover uses data from multiple phases, which is time-consuming and inefficient if evaluated one by one. Secondly, the conversion between different land cover classes increases the complexity of the sample stratification, and the assessments with different types of land cover suffer from inefficient sample stratification. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal stratified sampling method for stratifying the multi-temporal GlobeLand30 products for China. The changed and unchanged types of each class of data in the three periods are used to obtain a reasonable stratification. Then, the strata labels are simplified by using binary coding, i.e., a 1 or 0 representing a specified class or a nonspecified class, to improve the efficiency of the stratification. Additionally, the stratified sample size is determined by the combination of proportional allocation and empirical evaluation. The experimental results show that spatiotemporal stratified sampling is beneficial for increasing the sample size of the "change" strata for multi-temporal data and can evaluate not only the accuracy and area of the data in a single data but also the accuracy and area of the data in a multi-period change type and an unchanged type. Atmospheric correction of satellite remote sensing data is a prerequisite for a large variety of applications, including time series analysis and quantitative assessment of the Earth's vegetation cover. It was earlier reported that an atmospherically corrected KMSS-M (Meteor-M #2) dataset was produced for Russia and neighboring countries. The methodology adopted for atmospheric correction was based on localized histogram matching of target KMSS-M and MODIS reference gap-free and date-matching imagery. In this paper, we further advanced the methodology and quantitatively assessed Level-2 surface reflectance analysis-ready datasets, operatively produced for KMSS-2 instruments over continental scales. Quantitative assessment was based on accuracy, precision, and uncertainty (APU) metrics produced for red and near-infrared bands of the KMSS-2 instrument based on a reference derived from a MODIS MOD09 reconstructed surface reflectance. We compared error distributions at 5%, 20%, and 50% levels of cloudiness and indicated that the cloudiness factor has little impact on the robustness of the atmospheric correction regardless of the band. Finally, the spatial and temporal gradients of accuracy metrics were investigated over northern Eurasia and across different seasons. It was found that for the vast majority of observations, accuracy falls within the −0.010–0.035 range, while precision and uncertainty were below 0.06 for any band. With the successful launch of the most recent Meteor-M #2.3 with a new KMSS-2 instrument onboard, the efficiency and interoperability of the constellation are expected to increase. A flash flood disaster is one of the most destructive natural disasters. With the increase in extreme rainfall events, more and more areas will be threatened by flash floods. The flash flood susceptibility assessment is the basis of flash flood risk assessment and is also an important step in flash flood disaster management. Based on Citespace analysis tools, this study made a bibliometric and visualized analysis of 305 documents collected in the core collection of Web of Science in the past 15 years, including the analysis of the number of publications and citation frequency, influence analysis, keyword analysis, author co-citation analysis, and institutional co-operation analysis. This paper summarizes the current research status and future development trend of flash flood susceptibility assessment from five key research subfields, including assessment scale, assessment unit, assessment index, assessment model, and model assessment method, discusses the analysis of the application of remote sensing and GIS in flash flood susceptibility assessment, discusses the problems encountered in the current research of the five subfields, and provides suggestions for flash flood hazard control. This paper explores the existing literature on the active detection of crimes using remote sensing technologies. The paper reviews sixty-one studies that use remote sensing to actively detect crime. Considering the serious consequences of misidentifying crimes or sites of crimes (e.g., opening that place and its residents up to potentially needless intrusion, intimidation, surveillance or violence), the authors were surprised to find a lack of rigorous validation of the remote sensing methods utilized in these studies. In some cases, validation was not mentioned, while in others, validation was severely hampered by security issues, rough terrain and weather conditions. The paper also considers the potential hazards of the use of Google Earth to identify crimes and criminals. The paper concludes by considering alternate, "second order" validation techniques that could add vital context and understanding to remotely sensed images in a law enforcement context. With this discussion, the authors seek to initiate a discussion on other potential "second order" validation techniques, as well as on the exponential growth of surveillance in our everyday lives. Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning (DL) is a powerful, recently developed image classification approach. With origins in the computer vision and image processing communities, the accuracy assessment methods developed for CNN-based DL use a wide range of metrics that may be unfamiliar to the remote sensing (RS) community. To explore the differences between traditional RS and DL RS methods, we surveyed a random selection of 100 papers from the RS DL literature. The results show that RS DL studies have largely abandoned traditional RS accuracy assessment terminology, though some of the accuracy measures typically used in DL papers, most notably precision and recall, have direct equivalents in traditional RS terminology. Some of the DL accuracy terms have multiple names, or are equivalent to another measure. In our sample, DL studies only rarely reported a complete confusion matrix, and when they did so, it was even more rare that the confusion matrix estimated population properties. On the other hand, some DL studies are increasingly paying attention to the role of class prevalence in designing accuracy assessment approaches. DL studies that evaluate the decision boundary threshold over a range of values tend to use the precision-recall (P-R) curve, the associated area under the curve (AUC) measures of average precision (AP) and mean average precision (mAP), rather than the traditional receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and its AUC. DL studies are also notable for testing the generalization of their models on entirely new datasets, including data from new areas, new acquisition times, or even new sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital elevation models (DEMs) are widely used in digital terrain analysis, global change research, digital Earth applications, and studies concerning natural disasters. In this investigation, a thorough examination and comparison of five open-source DEMs (ALOS PALSAR, SRTM1 DEM, SRTM3 DEM, NASADEM, and ASTER GDEM V3) was carried out, with a focus on the Chongqing region as a specific case study. By utilizing ICESat-2 ATL08 data for validation and employing a random forest model to refine terrain variables such as slope, aspect, land cover, and landform type, a study was undertaken to assess the precision of DEM data. Research indicates that spatial resolution significantly impacts the accuracy of DEMs. ALOS PALSAR demonstrated satisfactory performance, reducing the corrected root mean square error (RMSE) from 13.29 m to 9.15 m. The implementation of the random forest model resulted in a significant improvement in the accuracy of the 30 m resolution NASADEM product. This improvement was supported by a decrease in the RMSE from 38.24 m to 9.77 m, demonstrating a significant 74.45% enhancement in accuracy. Consequently, the ALOS PALSAR and NASADEM datasets are considered the preferred data sources for mountainous urban areas. Furthermore, the study established a clear relationship between the precision of DEMs and slope, demonstrating a consistent decline in precision as slope steepness increases. The influence of aspect on accuracy was considered to be relatively minor, while vegetated areas and medium-to-high-relief mountainous terrains were identified as the main challenges in attaining accuracy in the DEMs. This study offers valuable insights into selecting DEM datasets for complex terrains in mountainous urban areas, highlighting the critical importance of choosing the appropriate DEM data for scientific research. Validating or accessing the accuracy of soft classification maps has rapidly developed over the past few years. This assessment employs a soft error matrix as generalized from the traditional, hard classification error matrix. However, the impact of positional error on the soft classification is uncertain and whether the well-accepted half-pixel registration accuracy is suitable for the soft classification accuracy assessment is unknown. In this paper, a simulation analysis was conducted to examine the influence of positional error on the overall accuracy (OA) and kappa in soft classification accuracy assessment under different landscape conditions (i.e., spatial characteristics and spatial resolutions). Results showed that with positional error ranging from 0 to 3 soft pixels, the OA-error varied from 0 to 44.6 percent while the kappa-error varied from 0 to 93.7 percent. Landscape conditions with smaller mean patch size (MPS) and greater fragmentation produced greater positional error impact on the accuracy measures at spatial resolutions of 1 and 2 unit distances. However, this trend did not hold for spatial resolutions of 5 and 10 unit distances. A half of a pixel was not sufficient to keep the overall accuracy error and kappa error under 10 percent. The results indicate that for soft classification accuracy assessment the requirement for registration accuracy is higher and depends greatly on the landscape characteristics. Given the advances in remotely sensed imagery and associated technologies, several global land cover maps have been produced in recent times including IGBP DISCover, UMD Land Cover, Global Land Cover 2000 and GlobCover 2009. However, the utility of these maps for specific applications has often been hampered due to considerable amounts of uncertainties and inconsistencies. A thorough review of these global land cover projects including evaluating the sources of error and uncertainty is prudent and enlightening. Therefore, this paper describes our work in which we compared, summarized and conducted an uncertainty analysis of the four global land cover mapping projects using an error budget approach. The results showed that the classification scheme and the validation methodology had the highest error contribution and implementation priority. A comparison of the classification schemes showed that there are many inconsistencies between the definitions of the map classes. This is especially true for the mixed type classes for which thresholds vary for the attributes/discriminators used in the classification process. Examination of these four global mapping projects provided quite a few important lessons for the future global mapping projects including the need for clear and uniform definitions of the classification scheme and an efficient, practical, and valid design of the accuracy assessment. Accurate and reliable information on the spatial distribution of major crops is needed for detecting possible production deficits with the aim of preventing food security crises and anticipating response planning. In this paper, we compared some of the most widely used global land cover datasets to examine their comparative advantages for cropland monitoring. Cropland class areas are compared for the following datasets: FAO-GLCshare (FAO Global Land Cover Network), Geowiki IIASA-Hybrid (Hybrid global land cover map from the International Institute of Applied System Analysis), GLC2000 (Global Land Cover 2000), GLCNMO2008 (Global Land Cover by National Mapping Organizations), GlobCover, Globeland30, LC-CCI (Land Cover Climate Change Initiative) 2010 and 2015, and MODISLC (MODIS Land Cover product). The methodology involves: (1) highlighting discrepancies in the extent and spatial distribution of cropland, (2) comparing the areas with FAO agricultural statistics at the country level, and (3) providing accuracy assessment through freely available reference datasets. Recommendations for crop monitoring at the country level are based on a priority ranking derived from the results obtained from analyses 2 and 3. Our results revealed that cropland information varies substantially among the analyzed land cover datasets. FAO-GLCshare and Globeland30 generally provided adequate results to monitor cropland areas, whereas LC-CCI2010 and GLC2000 are less unsuitable due to large overestimations in the former and out of date information and low accuracy in the latter. Satellite precipitation products (SPPs) are of great significance for water resource management and utilization in China; however, they suffer from considerable uncertainty. While numerous researchers have evaluated the accuracy of various SPPs, further investigation is needed to assess their performance across China's nine major water resource regions. This study used the latest precipitation dataset of the China Meteorological Administration's Land Surface Data Assimilation System (CLDAS-V2.0) as the benchmark and evaluated the performance of six SPPs—GSMaP, PERSIANN, CMORPH, CHIRPS, GPM IMERG, and TRMM—using six indices: correlation coefficient (CC), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), probability of detection (POD), false alarm rate (FAR), and critical success index (CSI), at both daily and hourly scales across China's nine water resource regions. The conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) The performance of the six SPPs was generally weaker in the west than in the east, with the Continental Basin (CB) exhibiting the poorest performance, followed by the Southwest Basin (SB). (2) At the hourly scale, the performance of the six SPPs was weaker compared to the daily scale, particularly in the high-altitude CB and the high-latitude Songhua and Liaohe River Basin (SLRB), where observing light precipitation and snowfall presents significant challenges. (3) GSMaP, CMORPH, and GPM IMERG demonstrated superior overall performance compared to CHIRPS, PERISANN, and TRMM. (4) CMORPH was found to be better suited for application in drought-prone areas, showcasing optimal performance in the CB and SB. GSMaP excelled in humid regions, displaying the best overall performance in the remaining seven basins. GPM IMERG serves as a complementary precipitation data source for the first two. The free availability of Sentinel-1 and 2 imageries enables the production of high resolution (10 m) global Land Use Land Cover (LULC) maps by a wide range of institutions, which often make them publicly available. This raises several issues: Which map should be used for each type of application? How accurate are these maps? What is the level of agreement between them? This motivated us to assess the thematic accuracy of six LULC maps for continental Portugal with 10 m spatial resolution with reference dates between 2017 and 2020, using the same method and the same reference database, in a bid to make the results comparable. The overall accuracy and the per class user's and producer's accuracy are compared with the ones reported by the map producers, at the national, European, or global level, according to their availability. The nomenclatures of the several maps were then analyzed and compared to generate a harmonized nomenclature to which all maps were converted into. The harmonized products were compared directly with a visual analysis and the proportion of regions equally classified was computed, as well as the area assigned per product to each class. The accuracy of these harmonized maps was also assessed considering the previously used reference database. The results show that there are significant differences in the overall accuracy of the original products, varying between 42% and 72%. The differences between the user's and producer's accuracy per class are very large for all maps. When comparing the obtained results with the ones reported by the map producers for Portugal, Europe or globally (depending on what is available) the results obtained in this study have lower accuracy metrics values for all maps. The comparison of the harmonized maps shows that they agree in 83% of the study area, but there are differences in terms of detail and area of the classes, mainly for the class "Built up" and "Bare land". The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, launched in December 2022, aims to address the crucial environmental goal of water monitoring to support preparedness for extreme events and facilitate adaptation to climate change on global and local scales. This mission will provide a comprehensive inventory of worldwide water resources, lakes, reservoir storage, and river dynamics. In this work, we carried out a preliminary assessment of SWOT's Lake product Level 2 version 1.1, also known as "L2_HR_LakeSP". The analysis was performed across six diverse lakes on three continents, revealing an average median bias of 0.08 m with respect to the considered reference, after suitable outlier removal. An overall precision of 0.22 m was found, combined with an average correlation of 68% between SWOT and reference time series. Moreover, the accuracy varied in the considered six lakes, since biases up to some decimeters were found for some of them; they could be due to residual inconsistencies between the vertical reference frame of SWOT and that of the considered reference. In summary, the first analysis of the "L2_HR_LakeSP" product, Version 1.1, demonstrated the promising potential of SWOT for monitoring seasonal variations in water levels. Nevertheless, notable anomalies were found in the water masks, particularly in higher latitudes, suggesting potential difficulties in accurately delineating water bodies in those regions. Additionally, a discernible reduction in accuracy was observed towards the end of the monitoring period. These preliminary findings indicate some issues that should be addressed in future investigations about the quality and potential of SWOT's lake products for advancing our understanding of global water dynamics. Ice thickness has a significant effect on the physical and biogeochemical processes of a lake, and it is an integral focus of research in the field of ice engineering. The Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, known as the Third Pole of the world, contains numerous lakes. Compared with some information, such as the area, water level, and ice phenology of its lakes, the ice thickness of these lakes remains poorly understood. In this study, we used an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a 400/900 MHz ice-penetrating radar to detect the ice thickness of Qinghai Lake and Gahai Lake. Two observation fields were established on the western side of Qinghai Lake and Gahai Lake in January 2019 and January 2021, respectively. Based on the in situ ice thickness and the propagation time of the radar, the accuracy of the ice thickness measurements of these two non-freshwater lakes was comprehensively assessed. The results indicate that pre-processed echo images from the UAV-borne ice-penetrating radar identified non-freshwater lake ice, and we were thus able to accurately calculate the propagation time of radar waves through the ice. The average dielectric constants of Qinghai Lake and Gahai Lake were 4.3 and 4.6, respectively. This means that the speed of the radar waves that propagated through the ice of the non-freshwater lake was lower than that of the radio waves that propagated through the freshwater lake. The antenna frequency of the radar also had an impact on the accuracy of ice thickness modeling. The RMSEs were 0.034 m using the 400 MHz radar and 0.010 m using the 900 MHz radar. The radar with a higher antenna frequency was shown to provide greater accuracy in ice thickness monitoring, but the control of the UAV's altitude and speed should be addressed. Convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning (DL) has a wide variety of applications in the geospatial and remote sensing (RS) sciences, and consequently has been a focus of many recent studies. However, a review of accuracy assessment methods used in recently published RS DL studies, focusing on scene classification, object detection, semantic segmentation, and instance segmentation, indicates that RS DL papers appear to follow an accuracy assessment approach that diverges from that of traditional RS studies. Papers reporting on RS DL studies have largely abandoned traditional RS accuracy assessment terminology; they rarely reported a complete confusion matrix; and sampling designs and analysis protocols generally did not provide a population-based confusion matrix, in which the table entries are estimates of the probabilities of occurrence of the mapped landscape. These issues indicate the need for the RS community to develop guidance on best practices for accuracy assessment for CNN-based DL thematic mapping and object detection. As a first step in that process, we explore key issues, including the observation that accuracy assessments should not be biased by the CNN-based training and inference processes that rely on image chips. Furthermore, accuracy assessments should be consistent with prior recommendations and standards in the field, should support the estimation of a population confusion matrix, and should allow for assessment of model generalization. This paper draws from our review of the RS DL literature and the rich record of traditional remote sensing accuracy assessment research while considering the unique nature of CNN-based deep learning to propose accuracy assessment best practices that use appropriate sampling methods, training and validation data partitioning, assessment metrics, and reporting standards. Accuracy assessment, also referred to as validation, is a key process in the workflow of developing a land cover map. To make this process open and transparent, we have developed a new online tool called LACO-Wiki, which encapsulates this process into a set of four simple steps including uploading a land cover map, creating a sample from the map, interpreting the sample with very high resolution satellite imagery and generating a report with accuracy measures. The aim of this paper is to present the main features of this new tool followed by an example of how it can be used for accuracy assessment of a land cover map. For the purpose of illustration, we have chosen GlobeLand30 for Kenya. Two different samples were interpreted by three individuals: one sample was provided by the GlobeLand30 team as part of their international efforts in validating GlobeLand30 with GEO (Group on Earth Observation) member states while a second sample was generated using LACO-Wiki. Using satellite imagery from Google Maps, Bing and Google Earth, the results show overall accuracies between 53% to 61%, which is lower than the global accuracy assessment of GlobeLand30 but may be reasonable given the complex landscapes found in Kenya. Statistical models were then fit to the data to determine what factors affect the agreement between the three interpreters such as the land cover class, the presence of very high resolution satellite imagery and the age of the image in relation to the baseline year for GlobeLand30 (2010). Crop residue burning (CRB) is a major source of air pollution in many parts of the world, especially Asia. Policymakers, practitioners, and researchers have invested in measuring the extent and impacts of burning and developing interventions to reduce its occurrence. However, any attempt to measure burning, in terms of its extent, impact, or the effectiveness of interventions to reduce it, requires data on where burning occurs. These data are challenging to collect in the field, both in terms of cost and feasibility, because crop-residue fires are short-lived, each covers only a small area, and evidence of burning disappears once fields are tilled. Remote sensing offers a way to observe fields without the complications of on-the-ground monitoring. However, the same features that make CRB hard to observe on the ground also make remote-sensing-based measurements prone to inaccuracies. The extent of crop burning is generally underestimated due to missing observations, while individual plots are often falsely identified as burned due to the local dominance of the practice, a lack of training data on tilled vs. burned plots, and a weak signal-to-noise ratio that makes it difficult to distinguish between the two states. Here, we summarize the current literature on the measurement of CRB and flag five common pitfalls that hinder analyses of CRB with remotely sensed data: inadequate spatial resolution, inadequate temporal resolution, ill-fitted signals, improper comparison groups, and inadequate accuracy assessment. We take advantage of data from ground-based monitoring of CRB in Punjab, India, to calibrate and validate analyses with PlanetScope and Sentinel-2 imagery and illuminate each of these pitfalls. Land cover (LC) products play a crucial role in various fields such as change detection, resource management, and urban planning. The diversity in methods and principles used to create different products poses a challenge for researchers in choosing the most suitable one for research needs. Mainstream evaluation methods typically consider only a portion of the accuracy information from the product and require a significant effort in creating validation datasets. Here, we propose a relative accuracy assessment method for LC products based on optimal transport theory, which provides a comprehensive evaluation by utilizing a broader range of accuracy information within the product. The method can directly compute the similarity between the target product and the reference truth at a global scale, addressing the issue of quantitatively assessing product accuracy in the absence of a validation dataset. To validate the effectiveness of the method, we select Beijing as the study area to assess the accuracy of four LC products. The results suggest that the method allows for precise quantification of product accuracy, aligning closely with validation outcomes, which can provide valuable guidance to researchers in both product creation and selection. In the last decade, RGB-D cameras - also called range imaging cameras - have known a permanent evolution. Because of their limited cost and their ability to measure distances at a high frame rate, such sensors are especially appreciated for applications in robotics or computer vision. The Kinect v1 (Microsoft) release in November 2010 promoted the use of RGB-D cameras, so that a second version of the sensor arrived on the market in July 2014. Since it is possible to obtain point clouds of an observed scene with a high frequency, one could imagine applying this type of sensors to answer to the need for 3D acquisition. However, due to the technology involved, some questions have to be considered such as, for example, the suitability and accuracy of RGB-D cameras for close range 3D modeling. In that way, the quality of the acquired data represents a major axis. In this paper, the use of a recent Kinect v2 sensor to reconstruct small objects in three dimensions has been investigated. To achieve this goal, a survey of the sensor characteristics as well as a calibration approach are relevant. After an accuracy assessment of the produced models, the benefits and drawbacks of Kinect v2 compared to the first version of the sensor and then to photogrammetry are discussed. As result of the "Global Land Cover Mapping at Finer Resolution" project led by National Geomatics Center of China (NGCC), one of the first global land cover datasets at 30-meters resolution (GlobeLand30) has been produced for the years 2000 and 2010. The first comprehensive accuracy assessment at a national level of these data (excluding some comparisons in China) has been performed on the Italian area by means of a benchmarking with the more detailed land cover datasets available for some Italian regions. The accuracy evaluation was based on the cell-by-cell comparison between Italian maps and the GlobeLand30 in order to obtain the confusion matrix and its derived statistics (overall accuracy, allocation and quantity disagreements, user and producer accuracy), which help to understand the classification quality. This paper illustrates the adopted methodology and procedures for assessing GlobeLand30 and reports the obtained statistics. The analysis has been performed in eight regions across Italy and shows very good results: the comparison of the datasets according to the first level of Corine Land Cover nomenclature highlights overall accuracy values generally higher than 80%. The provision of precise and dependable information regarding the extent and distribution of cropland is imperative for the evaluation of food security, agricultural planning, and resource management. Cropland is an important component of land cover type and is offered in multiple existing global/regional land cover products. However, global-scale accuracy evaluation may not be representative of class-specific or local-area accuracy, such as in Northeast China, which is an important grain-producing region of China and has various types of cultivated land (e.g., wheat, rice) and diverse terrains. It poses a great challenge in generating precise cropland classification by automated mapping. Thus, it is indispensable to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of these various land cover datasets before using them. In this study, we collected thirteen sets of global or national-scale land cover datasets. Through the visual interpretation of high-resolution images, ground "truth" samples were collected to evaluate the data accuracy across Northeast China. The overall accuracy (OA) evaluation results in Phase-2020 show that CLCD has the highest value with 0.914, followed by GlobeLand30 (0.906), GLC_FCS30 (0.902), and Esri (0.896) for cropland classification in Northeast China. CGLS-LC100 has the lowest OA (0.710). For the commission and omission errors of six datasets in Phase-2020, CGLS-LC100 has an obvious overestimation (larger commission error), while the two national-scale datasets (CLCD and CLUDs) perform relatively better. In terms of spatial consistency, high spatial agreement among the nine Phase-2015 datasets or in the six Phase-2020 datasets could be discovered in traditional agricultural regions like the Sanjiang–Songnen–Liaohe Plain, and low agreement is found in the transition areas of mountains (hills) and plains with the mixed landscape of forest (grassland) and farmland. In the aspect of comparison pairwise data, CLCD is in good agreement with GLC_FCS30, GlobeLand30, and Esri, while CGLS-LC100 is in the poorest agreement with any other dataset. The comparison and evaluation results are expected to provide a reference on which aspects and to what extent these land cover products may be consistent and guide the cropland data product selection for Northeast China. Currently, many globally accessible forest mapping products can be utilized to monitor and assess the status of and changes in forests. However, substantial disparities exist among these products due to variations in forest definitions, classification methods, and remote sensing data sources. This becomes particularly conspicuous in regions characterized by significant deforestation, like Southeast Asia, where forest mapping uncertainty is more pronounced, presenting users with challenges in selecting appropriate datasets across diverse regions. Moreover, this situation impedes the further enhancement of accuracy for forest mapping products. The aim of this research is to assess the consistency and accuracy of six recently produced forest mapping products in Southeast Asia. These products include three 10 m land cover products (Finer Resolution Observation and Monitoring Global LC (FROM-GLC10), ESA WorldCover 10 m 2020 (ESA2020), and ESRI 2020 Land Cover (ESRI2020)) and three forest thematic mapping products (Global PALSAR-2 Forest/Non-Forest map (JAXA FNF2020), global 30 m spatial distribution of forest cover in 2020 (GFC30_2020), and Generated_Hansen2020, which was synthesized based on Hansen TreeCover2010 (Hansen2010) and Hansen Global Forest Change (Hansen GFC) for the year 2020). Firstly, the research compared the area and spatial consistency. Next, accuracy was assessed using field validation points and manual densification points. Finally, the research analyzed the geographical environmental and biophysical factors influencing consistency. The results show that ESRI2020 had the highest overall accuracy for forest, followed by ESA2020, FROM-GLC10, and Generated_Hansen2020. Regions with elevations ranging from 200 to 3000 m and slopes below 15° or above 25° showed high spatial consistency, whereas other regions showed low consistency. Inconsistent regions showed complex landscapes heavily influenced by human activities; these regions are prone to being confused with shrubs and cropland and are also impacted by rubber and oil palm plantations, significantly affecting the accuracy of forest mapping. Based on the research findings, ESRI2020 is recommended for mountainous areas and abundant forest regions. However, in areas significantly affected by human activities, such as forest and non-forest edges and mixed areas of plantations and natural forests, caution should be taken with product selection. The research has identified areas of forest inconsistency that require attention in future forest mapping. To enhance our understanding of forest mapping and generate high-precision forest cover maps, it is recommended to incorporate multi-source data, subdivide forest types, and increase the number of sample points. Spatial sampling design is important for accurately assessing land use and land cover (LULC) classification results from remote sensing data. Spatial stratification can dramatically improve spatial sampling efficiency by dividing the study area into several strata when classification correctness is spatially stratified heterogeneous. By integrating the LULC classification results from different sources and spatial resolutions, a spatial stratification method for spatial sampling of accuracy assessment is presented in this paper. Its efficiency is demonstrated in the case study using LULC data of Beijing, China, in the following steps. First, we standardized and reclassified multiresolution remote sensing data, including China's land use/cover datasets (CLUDs) from 2017 (resolution: 30 m), 500 m MCD12Q1, and 10 m FROM-GLC10 data, into six classes. Second, we customized stratification rules, formulated a technical specification to realize 11 strata using CLUDs and MCD12Q1, and employed FROM-GLC10 as the reference data for accuracy assessment. Furthermore, six sample sets with sizes of 16,417; 1821; 652; 337; 198; and 142 were drawn using different methods, and their overall accuracy (OA), deviation accuracy (DA), root-mean-square error (RMSE), and standard deviation (STDEV) values were also evaluated to demonstrate the efficiency brought by spatial stratification. Compared with the spatial even sampling method, the OAs of the stratified even sampling method adopting the proposed stratification method was much closer to the true OA, and the corresponding RMSE and STDEV results decreased from 2.097% and 2.127% to 0.914% and 0.713%, respectively, due to the contribution of spatial stratification in the sampling scheme. The method can be used to distinguish the differences and improve the representativeness of samples, and it can be employed to select validation samples for LULC classification. Evapotranspiration (ET) plays a crucial role in water balance within the global hydrological cycle. Timely assessment of ET products can provide the scientific basis for quantitative analysis of hydrological cycle processes and water resources assessment. In this paper, four high spatial resolution remote sensing ET products—the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer global terrestrial evapotranspiration product (MOD16), the ET product based on Penman–Monteith–Leuning equation version 2 (PML-V2), the ET product based on the Breathing Earth System Simulator (BESS) and the ET product of the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS)—were firstly assessed using the eddy covariance (EC) of different vegetation types in the Lancang–Mekong River Basin (LMRB). To fully assess the performances of these four products, spatiotemporal inter-comparisons and literature comparisons were also conducted across different climatic zones. The results are summarized as follows: (1) MOD16 does not perform well as compared to the other three products, with its Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) being higher than GLASS, PML-V2 and BESS, which are approximately 0.47 mm/8-day, 0.66 mm/8-day, and 0.90 mm/8-day, respectively; (2) the performance of each product varies across different vegetation types, and even within the same climate zone. PML-V2 performs best in evergreen broadleaf forests, BESS performs best in deciduous broadleaf forests and croplands, and GLASS performs best in shrubs, grasslands and mixed vegetation; (3) each product can well reflect the spatial difference brought by topography, climate and vegetation over the entire basin but all four ET products do not show either a consistent temporal trend or a uniform spatial distribution; (4) ET ranges of these four products over LMRB are consistent with previous literature in evergreen broadleaf forests, deciduous broadleaf forests, needleleaf forests and mixed forests in other regions with the same climate zones, but they show great differences in croplands, grasslands and shrubs. Digital Surface Model (DSM) derived from high resolution satellite imagery is important for various applications. GFDM is China's first civil optical remote sensing satellite with multiple agile imaging modes and sub-meter resolution. Its panchromatic resolution is 0.5 m and 1.68 m for multi-spectral images. Compared with the onboard stereo viewing instruments (0.8 m for forward image, 0.65 m for back image, and 2.6 m for back multi-spectrum images) of GF-7, a mapping satellite of China in the same period, their accuracy is very similar. However, the accuracy of GFDM DSM has not yet been verified or fully characterized, and the detailed difference between the two has not yet been assessed either. This paper evaluates the DSM accuracy generated by GFDM and GF-7 satellite imagery using high-precision reference DSM and the observations of Ground Control Points (GCPs) as the reference data. A method to evaluate the DSM accuracy based on regional DSM errors and GCPs errors is proposed. Through the analysis of DSM subtraction, profile lines, strips detection and residuals coupling differences, the differences of DSM overall accuracy, vertical accuracy, horizontal accuracy and the strips errors between GFDM DSM and GF-7 DSM are evaluated. The results show that the overall accuracy of both is close while the vertical accuracy is slightly different. When regional DSM is used as the benchmark, the GFDM DSM has a slight advantage in elevation accuracy, but there are some regular fluctuation strips with small amplitude. When GCPs are used as the reference, the elevation Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of GFDM DSM is about 0.94 m, and that of GF-7 is 0.67 m. GF-7 DSM is more accurate, but both of the errors are within 1 m. The DSM image residuals of the GF-7 are within 0.5 pixel, while the residuals of GFDM are relatively large, reaching 0.8 pixel. The world is rapidly urbanizing, but there is no single urbanization process. Rather, urban areas in different regions of the world are undergoing myriad types of transformation processes. The purpose of this paper is to examine how well data from DMSP/OLS nighttime lights (NTL) can identify different types of urbanization processes. Although data from DMSP/OLS NTL are increasingly used for the study of urban areas, to date there is no systematic assessment of how well these data identify different types of urban change. Here, we randomly select 240 sample locations distributed across all world regions to generate urbanization typologies with the DMSP/OLS NTL data and use Google Earth imagery to assess the validity of the NTL results. Our results indicate that where urbanization occurred, NTL have a high accuracy (93%) of characterizing these changes. There is also a relatively high error of commission (42%), where NTL identified urban change when no change occurred. This leads to an overestimation of urbanization by NTL. Our analysis shows that time series NTL data more accurately identifies urbanization in developed countries, but is less accurate in developing countries, suggesting the need to exert caution when using or interpreting NTL in developing countries. Land cover land use (LCLU) products provide essential information for numerous environmental and human studies. Here, we assess the accuracy of eleven global and regional products over the conterminous U.S. using 25,000 high-confidence randomly distributed samples. Results show that in general, the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) and the Land Change Monitoring, Assessment and Projection (LCMAP) outperform other multi-class products, both in terms of higher individual class accuracy and with accuracy variability across classes. More specifically, F1 accuracy comparisons between the best performing USGS and non-USGS products indicate: (i) similar performance for the water class, (ii) USGS product outperformance in the developed (+1.3%), grass/shrub (+3.2%) and tree cover (+4.2%) classes, and (iii) non-USGS product (WorldCover) gains in the cropland (+5.1%) class. The NLCD and LCMAP also outperformed specialized single-class products, such as the Hansen Global Forest Change, the Cropland Data Layer and the Global Artificial Impervious Areas, while offering comparable results to the Global Surface Water Dynamics product. Spatial visualizations also allowed accuracy comparisons across different geographic areas. In general, the NLCD and LCMAP have disagreements mainly in the middle and southeastern part of conterminous U.S. while Esri, WorldCover and Dynamic World have most errors in the western U.S. Comparisons were also undertaken on a subset of the reference data, called spatial edge samples, that identifies samples surrounded by neighboring samples of different class labels, thus excluding easy-to-classify homogenous areas. There, the WorldCover product offers higher accuracies for the highly dynamic grass/shrub (+4.4%) and cropland (+8.1%) classes when compared to the NLCD and LCMAP products. An important conclusion while looking at these challenging samples is that except for the tree class (78%), the best performing products per class range in accuracy between 55% and 70%, which suggests that there is substantial room for improvement. Our objective was to develop a method for the assessment of forest area and structural variables for cases in which the availability of representative ground reference data is poor and these data are not collected from the whole area of interest. We implemented two independent approaches to the estimation of the forest variables of a European boreal forest: (i) the computation of wall-to-wall estimates using moderate- to low-resolution VIIRS imagery from the Suomi NPP mission; and (ii) the visual interpretation of plots of samples from very high resolution (VHR) satellite data obtained via a two-stage design. Our focus was on the statistical comparison of forest resources at a country or larger level. The study area was boreal forest ranging from Norway to the Ural Mountains in Russia. We computed a seamless mosaic from 111 VIIRS images. From the mosaic, we computed predictions for the forest area, growing stock volume, height of the dominating tree layer, proportion of conifers and broadleaved trees, site fertility class, and leaf area index. The reference data for the VIIRS imagery were national forest inventory (NFI)-based raster maps from Finland. The first stage sample of VHR data included 42 images; of these, a second stage sample of 2690 plots was visually interpreted for the same variables. The forest area prediction from VIIRS for the whole study area was 1.2% higher than the VHR-based result. All other structural variable predictions using VIIRS fitted within the 95% confidence intervals computed from the VHR sample except for estimates of the main tree species groups, which were outside the limits. A comparison of VIIRS-based forest area estimates using Finnish and Swedish NFI data indicated overestimations of 10.0% points and 4.6% points, whereas the total growing stock volumes were overestimated by 8% and underestimated by 3.4%, respectively. The correlation coefficients between the VIIRS and VHR image predictions at the 42 VHR image locations varied from 0.70 to 0.85. The VIIRS maps strongly averaged the local predictions due to their coarse spatial resolutions. Based on our findings, the approach using two independent estimations yielded similar figures for the central forest variables for the European boreal forest. A model computed using reference data from a small part of the area of interest can provide satisfactory predictions for a much larger area with a similar biome. Pan-sharpening methods allow the transfer of higher resolution panchromatic images to multispectral ones concerning the same scene. Different approaches are available in the literature, and only a part of these approaches is included in remote sensing software for automatic application. In addition, the quality of the results supplied by a specific method varies according to the characteristics of the scene; for consequence, different algorithms must be compared to find the best performing one. Nevertheless, pan-sharpening methods can be applied using GIS basic functions in the absence of specific pan-sharpening tools, but this operation is expensive and time-consuming. This paper aims to explain the approach implemented in Quantum GIS (QGIS) for automatic pan-sharpening of Pléiades images. The experiments are carried out on data concerning the Greek island named Lesbo. In total, 14 different pan-sharpening methods are applied to reduce pixel dimensions of the four multispectral bands from 2 m to 0.5 m. The automatic procedure involves basic functions already included in GIS software; it also permits the evaluation of the quality of the resulting images supplying the values of appropriate indices. The results demonstrate that the approach provides the user with the highest performing method every time, so the best possible fused products are obtained with minimal effort in a reduced timeframe. Object extraction from remote sensing images is critical for a wide range of applications, and object-oriented accuracy assessment plays a vital role in guaranteeing its quality. To evaluate object extraction accuracy, this paper presents several novel accuracy measures that differ from the norm. First, area-based and object number-based accuracy assessment measures are given based on a confusion matrix. Second, different accuracy assessment measures are provided by combining the similarities of multiple features. Third, to improve the reliability of the object extraction accuracy assessment results, two accuracy assessment measures based on object detail differences are designed. In contrast to existing measures, the presented method synergizes the feature similarity and distance difference, which considerably improves the reliability of object extraction evaluation. Over the past decades, benefiting from the development of computing capacity and the free access to Landsat and Sentinel imagery, several fine-resolution global land cover (GLC) products (with a resolution of 10 m or 30 m) have been developed (GlobeLand30, FROM-GLC30, GLC_FCS30, FROM-GLC10, European Space Agency (ESA) WorldCover and ESRI Land Cover). However, there is still a lack of consistency analysis or comprehensive accuracy assessment using a common validation dataset for these GLC products. In this study, a novel stratified random sampling GLC validation dataset (SRS_Val) containing 79,112 validation samples was developed using a visual interpretation method, significantly increasing the number of samples of heterogeneous regions and rare land-cover types. Then, we quantitatively assessed the accuracy of these six GLC products using the developed SRS_Val dataset at global and regional scales. The results reveal that ESA WorldCover achieved the highest overall accuracy (of 70.54% ± 9%) among the global 10 m land cover products, followed by FROM-GLC10 (68.95% ± 8%) and ESRI Land Cover (58.90% ± 7%) and that GLC_FCS30 had the best overall accuracy (of 72.55% ± 9%) among the global 30 m land cover datasets, followed by GlobeLand30 (69.96% ± 9%) and FROM-GLC30 (66.30% ± 8%). The mapping accuracy of the GLC products decreased significantly with the increased heterogeneity of landscapes, and all GLC products had poor mapping accuracies in countries with heterogeneous landscapes, such as some countries in Central and Southern Africa. Finally, we investigated the consistency of six GLC products from the perspective of area distributions and spatial patterns. It was found that the area consistencies between the five GLC products (except ESRI Land Cover) were greater than 85% and that the six GLC products showed large discrepancies in area consistency for grassland, shrubland, wetlands and bare land. In terms of spatial patterns, the totally inconsistent pixel proportions of the 10 m and 30 m GLC products were 23.58% and 14.12%, respectively, and these inconsistent pixels were mainly distributed in transition zones, complex terrains regions, heterogeneous landscapes, or mixed land-cover types. Therefore, the SRS_Val dataset well supports the quantitative evaluation of fine-resolution GLC products, and the assessment results provide users with quantitative metrics to select GLC products suitable for their needs. The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), launched in September 2018, has been widely used in forestry and surveying. A high-accuracy digital elevation model (DEM)/digital surface model (DSM) for terrain matching can effectively evaluate the ICESat-2 design requirements and provide essential data support for further study. The conventional terrain-matching methods regard the laser ground track as a whole, ignoring the individual differences caused by the interaction of photons during flight. Therefore, a novel terrain-matching method using a two-dimensional affine transformation model was proposed to describe the deformation of laser tracks. The least-square optimizes the model parameters with the high-accuracy terrain data to obtain the best matching result. The results in McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV), Antarctica, and Zhengzhou (ZZ), China, demonstrate that the proposed method can verify geolocation accuracy and indicate that the average horizontal accuracy of ICESat-2 V5 data is about 3.86 m in MDV and 4.67 m in ZZ. It shows that ICESat-2 has good positioning accuracy, even in mountainous areas with complex terrain. Additionally, the random forest (RF) model was calculated to analyze the influence of four factors on geographic location accuracy. The GEDI LiDAR system was specifically designed to detect vegetation structure and has proven to be a suitable tool for estimating forest biophysical parameters, especially canopy height, at a global scale. This study compares the GEDI relative height metric (RH100) over different forest types, especially deciduous broadleaf and evergreen coniferous located in Thuringia, Germany, to understand how the forest structural differences affect the GEDI height estimation. A canopy height model that was produced using digital terrain and surface models (DTM and DSM) derived from airborne laser scanning data is used as the reference data. Based on the result, GEDI canopy height over needleleaf forest is slightly more accurate (RMSE = 6.61 m) than that over broadleaf (RMSE = 8.30 m) and mixed (RMSE = 7.94 m) forest. Evaluation of the GEDI acquisition parameters shows that differences in beam type, sensitivity, and acquisition time do not significantly affect the accuracy of canopy heights, especially over needleleaf forests. Considering foliage condition impacts on canopy height estimation, the contrasting result is observed in the broadleaf and needleleaf forests. The GEDI dataset acquired during the winter when deciduous species shed their leaves (the so-called leaf-off dataset), outperforms the leaf-on dataset in the broadleaf forest but shows less accurate results for the needleleaf forest. Considering the effect of the plant area index (PAI) on the accuracy of the GEDI canopy height, the GEDI dataset is divided into two sets with low and high PAI values with a threshold of median PAI = 2. The results show that the low PAI dataset (median PAI < 2) corresponds to the non-growing season (autumn and winter) in the broadleaf forest. The slightly better performance of GEDI using the non-growing dataset (RMSE = 7.40 m) compared to the growing dataset (RMSE = 8.44 m) in the deciduous broadleaf forest and vice versa, the slightly better result using the growing dataset (RMSE = 6.38 m) compared to the non-growing dataset (RMSE = 7.24 m) in the evergreen needleleaf forest is in line with the results using the leaf-off/leaf-on season dataset. Although a slight improvement in canopy height estimation was observed using either the leaf-off or non-growing season dataset for broadleaf forest, and either the leaf-on or growing season dataset for needleleaf forest, the approach of filtering GEDI data based on such seasonal acquisition time is recommended when retrieving canopy height over pure stands of broadleaf or needleleaf species, and the sufficient dataset is available. Lidar remote sensing has proven to be a powerful tool for estimating ground elevation, canopy height, and additional vegetation parameters, which in turn are valuable information for the investigation of ecosystems. Spaceborne lidar systems, like the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), can deliver these height estimates on a near global scale. This paper analyzes the accuracy of the first version of GEDI ground elevation and canopy height estimates in two study areas with temperate forests in the Free State of Thuringia, central Germany. Digital terrain and canopy height models derived from airborne laser scanning data are used as reference heights. The influence of various environmental and acquisition parameters (e.g., canopy cover, terrain slope, beam type) on GEDI height metrics is assessed. The results show a consistently high accuracy of GEDI ground elevation estimates under most conditions, except for areas with steep slopes. GEDI canopy height estimates are less accurate and show a bigger influence of some of the included parameters, specifically slope, vegetation height, and beam sensitivity. A number of relatively high outliers (around 9–13% of the measurements) is present in both ground elevation and canopy height estimates, reducing the estimation precision. Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) inherently suffers from various errors. Many previous works employed Geoscience Laser Altimeter System onboard the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat/GLAS) data to assess and enhance SRTM DEM accuracy. Nevertheless, data coregistration between the two datasets was commonly neglected in their studies. In this paper, an automated and simple three dimensional (3D) coregistration method (3CM) was introduced to align the 3-arc-second SRTM (SRTM3) DEM and ICESat/GLAS data over Jiangxi province, China. Then, accuracy evaluation of the SRTM3 DEM using ICESat/GLAS data with and without data coregistration was performed on different classes of terrain factors and different land uses, with the purpose of evaluating the importance of data coregistration. Results show that after data coregistration, the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean bias of the SRTM3 DEM are reduced by 14.4% and 97.1%, respectively. Without data coregistration, terrain aspects with a sine-like shape are strongly related to SRTM3 DEM errors; nevertheless, this relationship disappears after data coregistration. Among the six land uses, SRTM3 DEM produces the lowest accuracy in forest areas. Finally, by incorporating land uses, terrain factors and ICESat/GLAS data into the correction models, the SRTM3 DEM was enhanced using multiple linear regression (MLR), back propagation neural network (BPNN), generalized regression NN (GRNN), and random forest (RF), respectively. Results exhibit that the four enhancement models with data coregistration obviously outperform themselves without the coregistration. Among the four models, RF produces the best result, and its RMSE is about 3.1%, 2.7% and 11.3% lower than those of MLR, BPNN, and GRNN, respectively. Moreover, 146 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) points over Ganzhou city of Jiangxi province were used to assess the accuracy of the RF-derived SRTM3 DEM. It is still difficult to obtain high-resolution and fast-updated NDVI data, and spatiotemporal fusion is an effective means to solve this problem. The purpose of this study is to carry out the comparative analysis and comprehensive trade-off of spatiotemporal fusion models for NDVI generation and to provide references for scholars in this field. In this study, four spatiotemporal fusion models (STARFM, ESTARFM, FSDAF, and GF-SG) were selected to carry out NDVI image fusion in grassland, forest, and farmland test areas, and three indicators of root mean square error (RMSE), average difference (AD), and edge feature richness difference (EFRD) were used. A detailed evaluation and analysis of the fusion results and comprehensive trade-off were carried out. The results show that: (1) all four models can predict fine-resolution NDVI images well, but the phenomenon of over-smoothing generally exists, which is more serious in high-heterogeneity areas; (2) GF-SG performed well in the evaluation of the three indicators, with the highest comprehensive trade-off score (CTS) of 0.9658. Followed by ESTARFM (0.9050), FSDAF (0.8901), and STARFM (0.8789); (3) considering the comparative analysis and comprehensive trade-off results of the three test areas and the three indicators, among the four models, GF-SG has the best accuracy in generating NDVI images. Global land-cover products play an important role in assisting the understanding of climate-related changes and the assessment of progress in the implementation of international initiatives for the mitigation of, and adaption to, climate change. However, concerns over the accuracies of land-cover products remain, due to the issue of validation data uncertainty. The volunteer-based Degree Confluence Project (DCP) was created in 1996, and it has been used to provide useful ground-reference information. This study aims to investigate the impact of DCP-based validation data uncertainty and the thematic issues on map accuracies. We built a reference dataset based on the DCP-interpreted dataset and applied a comparison for three existing global land-cover maps and DCP dataset-based probability maps under different classification schemes. The results of the obtained confusion matrices indicate that the uncertainty, including the number of classes and the confusion in mosaic classes, leads to a decrease in map accuracy. This paper proposes an informative classification scheme that uses a matrix structure of unaggregated land-cover and land-use classes, and has the potential to assist in the land-cover interpretation and validation processes. Land use and land cover (LULC) mapping is often undertaken by national mapping agencies, where these LULC products are used for different types of monitoring and reporting applications. Updating of LULC databases is often done on a multi-year cycle due to the high costs involved, so changes are only detected when mapping exercises are repeated. Consequently, the information on LULC can quickly become outdated and hence may be incorrect in some areas. In the current era of big data and Earth observation, change detection algorithms can be used to identify changes in urban areas, which can then be used to automatically update LULC databases on a more continuous basis. However, the change detection algorithm must be validated before the changes can be committed to authoritative databases such as those produced by national mapping agencies. This paper outlines a change detection algorithm for identifying construction sites, which represent ongoing changes in LU, developed in the framework of the LandSense project. We then use volunteered geographic information (VGI) captured through the use of mapathons from a range of different groups of contributors to validate these changes. In total, 105 contributors were involved in the mapathons, producing a total of 2778 observations. The 105 contributors were grouped according to six different user-profiles and were analyzed to understand the impact of the experience of the users on the accuracy assessment. Overall, the results show that the change detection algorithm is able to identify changes in residential land use to an adequate level of accuracy (85%) but changes in infrastructure and industrial sites had lower accuracies (57% and 75 %, respectively), requiring further improvements. In terms of user profiles, the experts in LULC from local authorities, researchers in LULC at the French national mapping agency (IGN), and first-year students with a basic knowledge of geographic information systems had the highest overall accuracies (86.2%, 93.2%, and 85.2%, respectively). Differences in how the users approach the task also emerged, e.g., local authorities used knowledge and context to try to identify types of change while those with no knowledge of LULC (i.e., normal citizens) were quicker to choose 'Unknown' when the visual interpretation of a class was more difficult. Reference data collected to validate land-cover maps are generally considered free of errors. In practice, however, they contain errors despite best efforts to minimize them. These errors propagate during accuracy assessment and tweak the validation results. For photo-interpreted reference data, the two most widely studied sources of error are systematic incorrect labeling and vigilance drops. How estimation errors, i.e., errors intrinsic to the response design, affect the accuracy of reference data is far less understood. In this paper, we analyzed the impact of estimation errors for two types of classification systems (binary and multiclass) as well as for two common response designs (point-based and partition-based) with a range of sub-sample sizes. Our quantitative results indicate that labeling errors due to proportion estimations should not be neglected. They further confirm that the accuracy of response designs depends on the class proportions within the sampling units, with complex landscapes being more prone to errors. As a result, response designs where the number of sub-samples is predefined and fixed are inefficient. To guarantee high accuracy standards of validation data with minimum data collection effort, we propose a new method to adapt the number of sub-samples for each sample during the validation process. In practice, sub-samples are incrementally selected and labeled until the estimated class proportions reach the desired level of confidence. As a result, less effort is spent on labeling univocal cases and the spared effort can be allocated to more ambiguous cases. This increases the reliability of reference data and of subsequent accuracy assessment. Across our study site, we demonstrated that such an approach could reduce the labeling effort by 50% to 75%, with greater gains in homogeneous landscapes. We contend that adopting this optimization approach will not only increase the efficiency of reference data collection, but will also help deliver more reliable accuracy estimates to the user community. To study global and regional environment protection and sustainable development and also to optimize mapping methods, it is of great significance to compare three existing 10 m resolution global land cover products in terms of accuracy: FROM-GLC10, the ESRI 2020 land cover product (ESRI2020), and the European Space Agency world cover 2020 product (ESA2020). However, most previous validations lack field collection points in large regions, especially in Southeast Asia, which has a cloudy and rainy climate, creating many difficulties in land cover mapping. In 2018 and 2019, we conducted a 56-day field investigation in Southeast Asia and collected 3326 points from different places. By combining these points and 14,808 other manual densification points in a stratified random sampling, we assessed the accuracy of the three land cover products in Southeast Asia. We also compared the impacts of the different classification standards, the different sample methods, and the different spatial distributions of the sample points. The results show that in Southeast Asia, (1) the mean overall accuracies of the FROM-GLC10, ESRI2020, and ESA2020 products are 75.43%, 79.99%, and 81.11%, respectively; (2) all three products perform well in croplands, forests, and built-up areas; ESRI2020 and ESA2020 perform well in water, but only ESA2020 performs well in grasslands; and (3) all three products perform badly in shrublands, wetlands, or bare land, as both the PA and the UA are lower than 50%. We recommend ESA2020 as the first choice for Southeast Asia's land cover because of its high overall accuracy. FROM-GLC10 also has an advantage over the other two in some classes, such as croplands and water in the UA aspect and the built-up area in the PA aspect. Vegetation mapping requires accurate information to allow its use in applications such as sustainable forest management against the effects of climate change and the threat of wildfires. Remote sensing provides a powerful resource of fundamental data at different spatial resolutions and spectral regions, making it an essential tool for vegetation mapping and biomass management. Due to the ever-increasing availability of free data and software, satellites have been predominantly used to map, analyze, and monitor natural resources for conservation purposes. This study aimed to map vegetation from Sentinel-2 (S2) data in a complex and mixed vegetation cover of the Lousã district in Portugal. We used ten multispectral bands with a spatial resolution of 10 m, and four vegetation indices, including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI). After applying principal component analysis (PCA) on the 10 S2A bands, four texture features, including mean (ME), homogeneity (HO), correlation (CO), and entropy (EN), were derived for the first three principal components. Textures were obtained using the Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM). As a result, 26 independent variables were extracted from S2. After defining the land use classes using an object-based approach, the Random Forest (RF) classifier was applied. The map accuracy was evaluated by the confusion matrix, using the metrics of overall accuracy (OA), producer accuracy (PA), user accuracy (UA), and kappa coefficient (Kappa). The described classification methodology showed a high OA of 90.5% and kappa of 89% for vegetation mapping. Using GLCM texture features and vegetation indices increased the accuracy by up to 2%; however, classification using GLCM texture features and spectral bands achieved the highest OA (92%), indicating the texture features′ capability in detecting the variability of forest species at stand level. The ME and CO showed the highest contribution to the classification accuracy among the GLCM textures. GNDVI outperformed other vegetation indices in variable importance. Moreover, using only S2A spectral bands, especially bands 11, 12, and 2, showed a high potential to classify the map with an OA of 88%. This study showed that adding at least one GLCM texture feature and at least one vegetation index into the S2A spectral bands may effectively increase the accuracy metrics and tree species discrimination. Identifying and mitigating sources of measurement error is a critical task in geomatics research and the geospatial industry as a whole. In pursuit of such error, accuracy assessments of lidar data have revealed a range bias in low-cost scanners. This phenomenon is a temporally correlated instability in the lidar scanner where the measured distance between target and sensor changes over time while both are held stationary. This research presents an assessment of two low-cost lidar scanners, the Velodyne® HDL–32E and Livox® Mid–40, in which their temporal stability is analyzed and methods to mitigate systematic error are implemented. By immobilizing each scanner as it observes a stationary target surface over the course of multiple hours, trends in scanner precision are identified. Scanner accuracy is then determined using a terrestrial lidar scanner, the Riegl® VZ-400, to observe both subject scanner and target, and extracting the distances between scanner origin and observed surface. Patterns identified in each scanner's distance measurements indicate temporal autocorrelation, and, by exploiting the high linear correlation between scanner internal temperature and measured distance in the HDL–32E, it is possible to mitigate the resulting error. Application of the proposed solution lowers the Velodyne® scanner's measurement RMSE by over 60%, providing levels of measurement accuracy comparable to more expensive lidar systems. Gebhardt et al. (2014) presented the Monitoring Activity Data for the Mexican REDD+ program (MAD-MEX), an automatic nation-wide land cover monitoring system for the Mexican REDD+ MRV. Though MAD-MEX represents a valuable first effort toward establishing a national reference emissions level for the implementation of REDD+ in Mexico, in this paper, we argue that this land cover system has important limitations that may prevent it from becoming operational for REDD+ MRV. Specifically, we show that (1) the accuracy assessment of MAD-MEX land cover maps is optimistically biased; (2) the ability of MAD-MEX to monitor land cover change, including deforestation and forest degradation; is poor and (3) the use of an entirely automatic classification approach, such as that followed by MAD-MEX, is highly problematic in the case of a large and heterogeneous country like Mexico. We discuss these limitations and call into question the ability of a land cover monitoring system, such as MAD-MEX, both to elaborate a national reference emissions level and to monitor future forest cover change, as part of a REDD+ MRV system. Bricks are the vital component of most masonry structures. Their maintenance is critical to the protection of masonry buildings. Terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (TLidar) systems provide massive point cloud data in an accurate and fast way. TLidar enables us to sample and store the state of a brick surface in a practical way. This article aims to extract individual bricks from an unorganized pile of bricks sampled by a dense point cloud. The method automatically segments and models the individual bricks. The methodology is divided into five main steps: Filter needless points, brick boundary points removal, coarse segmentation using 3D component analysis, planar segmentation and grouping, and brick reconstruction. A novel voting scheme is used to segment the planar patches in an effective way. Brick reconstruction is based on the geometry of single brick and its corresponding nominal size (length, width and height). The number of bricks reconstructed is around 75%. An accuracy assessment is performed by comparing 3D coordinates of the reconstructed vertices to the manually picked vertices. The standard deviations of differences along x, y and z axes are 4.55 mm, 4.53 mm and 4.60 mm, respectively. The comparison results indicate that the accuracy of reconstruction based on the introduced methodology is high and reliable. The work presented in this paper provides a theoretical basis and reference for large scene applications in brick-like structures. Mechanical Sonar Scanning (MSS) is a recent technology that allows sonar to be used for static measurements in the same way as Terrestrial Laser Scanners (TLS), which makes it an attractive tool for underwater infrastructure surveys. Nevertheless, the metrological capabilities of this type of device have been little explored in the literature, particularly in narrow and shallow environments. In this paper, we report on the experimental assessment of a recent MSS, the BlueView BV5000, in a lock. The 3D sonar scans performed with the system suspended from the surface are registered using an innovative algorithm that exploits external measurements from a total station and the symmetry of the structure. We review the different errors that impair sonar data, and compare the resulting point cloud to a TLS model that was acquired the day before, while the lock was completely emptied for maintenance. After correcting a tilt angle calibration error, the maximum difference is less than 10 cm, and the standard deviation is about 3 cm. Visual inspection shows that coarse defects of the masonry, such as stone lacks or cavities, can be detected in the MSS point cloud, while details smaller than 4 cm, e.g., damaged joints, are harder to notice. Accurate and reliable land cover information is vital for ecosystem management and regional sustainable development, especially for ecologically vulnerable areas. The South China Karst, one of the largest and most concentrated karst distribution areas globally, has been undergoing large-scale afforestation projects to combat accelerating land degradation since the turn of the new millennium. Here, we assess five recent and widely used global land cover datasets (i.e., CCI-LC, MCD12Q1, GlobeLand30, GlobCover, and CGLS-LC) for their comparative performances in land dynamics monitoring in the South China Karst during 2000–2020 based on the reference China Land Use/Cover Database. The assessment proceeded from three aspects: areal comparison, spatial agreement, and accuracy metrics. Moreover, divergent responses of overall accuracy with regard to varying terrain and geomorphic conditions have also been quantified. The results reveal that obvious discrepancies exist amongst land cover maps in both area and spatial patterns. The spatial agreement remains low in the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau and heterogeneous mountainous karst areas. Furthermore, the overall accuracy of the five datasets ranges from 40.3% to 52.0%. The CGLS-LC dataset, with the highest accuracy, is the most accurate dataset for mountainous southern China, followed by GlobeLand30 (51.4%), CCI-LC (50.0%), MCD12Q1 (41.4%), and GlobCover (40.3%). Despite the low overall accuracy, MCD12Q1 has the best accuracy in areas with an elevation above 1200 m or a slope greater than 25°. With regard to geomorphic types, accuracy in non-karst areas is evidently higher than in karst areas. Additionally, dataset accuracy declines significantly (p < 0.05) with an increase in landscape heterogeneity in the region. Satellite data provide high potential for estimating crop yield, which is crucial to understanding determinants of yield gaps and therefore improving food production, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) regions. However, accurate assessment of crop yield and its spatial variation is challenging in SSA because of small field sizes, widespread intercropping practices, and inadequate field observations. This study aimed to firstly evaluate the potential of satellite data in estimating maize yield in intercropped smallholder fields and secondly assess how factors such as satellite data spatial and temporal resolution, within-field variability, field size, harvest index and intercropping practices affect model performance. Having collected in situ data (field size, yield, intercrops occurrence, harvest index, and leaf area index), statistical models were developed to predict yield from multisource satellite data (i.e., Sentinel-2 and PlanetScope). Model accuracy and residuals were assessed against the above factors. Among 150 investigated fields, our study found that nearly half were intercropped with legumes, with an average plot size of 0.17 ha. Despite mixed pixels resulting from intercrops, the model based on the Sentinel-2 red-edge vegetation index (VI) could estimate maize yield with moderate accuracy (R2 = 0.51, nRMSE = 19.95%), while higher spatial resolution satellite data (e.g., PlanetScope 3 m) only showed a marginal improvement in performance (R2 = 0.52, nRMSE = 19.95%). Seasonal peak VI values provided better accuracy than seasonal mean/median VI, suggesting peak VI values may capture the signal of the dominant upper maize foliage layer and may be less impacted by understory intercrop effects. Still, intercropping practice reduces model accuracy, as the model residuals are lower in fields with pure maize (1 t/ha) compared to intercropped fields (1.3 t/ha). This study provides a reference for operational maize yield estimation in intercropped smallholder fields, using free satellite data in Southern Malawi. It also highlights the difficulties of estimating yield in intercropped fields using satellite imagery, and stresses the importance of sufficient satellite observations for monitoring intercropping practices in SSA.
