The standard thermal neutron flux unit, TNF2, in the Brazilian National Ionizing Radiation Metrology Laboratory was rebuilt. Fluence is still achieved by moderating of four 241Am-Be sources with 0.6 TBq each. The facility was again simulated and redesigned with graphite core and paraffin added graphite blocks surrounding it. Simulations using the MCNPX code on different geometric arrangements of moderator materials and neutron sources were performed. The resulting neutron fluence quality in terms of intensity, spectrum and cadmium ratio was evaluated. After this step, the system was assembled based on the results obtained from the simulations and measurements were performed with equipment existing in LNMRI/IRD and by simulated equipment. This work focuses on the characterization of a central chamber point and external points around the TNF2 in terms of neutron spectrum, fluence and ambient dose equivalent, H*(10). This paper aims to evaluate the radiation dose exposure of patients submitted to cardiac computed tomography angiography. The effective dose was obtained from the product of dose–length product values and the conversion factor established in the European Working Group for Guidelines on Quality Criteria in CT. The image noise and contrast- and signal-to-noise ratios were obtained for all images. Sixty-four- and 256-slice CT angiographies were used in 211 (68.5 %) and 97 (31.5 %) patients, respectively. The calculated mean effective dose with prospective CT angiography was 6.0±1.0 mSv and the retrospective mode was 8.4±1.2 mSv. The mean image noise values were 38.5±9.5 and 21.4 ± 5.3 for prospective and retrospective modes, respectively. It was observed that the image noise increased by 44.4 % using a prospective mode. Prospective CT angiography reduces radiation dose by ∼29 % compared with the retrospective mode, while maintaining diagnostic image quality and the ability to assess obstructions in patients. The aim of the study is to establish local diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) in cerebral thrombectomy, according to the anatomical region of ischemic stroke. This is a retrospective study from a single center involving 255 examinations. The proposed median values (P50) for thrombectomy are: 123 Gy.cm2 for air kerma-area product (PKA) and 915 mGy for air kerma (Ka,r). For middle cerebral artery (MCA) thrombectomies, the proposed DRLs are 118 Gy.cm2 for PKA and 112 Gy.cm2 for internal carotid artery (ICA). The Ka,r values for MCA and ICA are 849 and 775 mGy, respectively. It was observed that 94.9% of patients presented grade 0 on the initial modified treatment in cerebral infarction (mTICI) scale, and after thrombectomy, 63.1% of patients reached a final mTICI grade of 3. Stents were implanted in 37 patients (14.5% of cases). It was concluded that 16.1% of patients exceeded one trigger value of the Safety in Radiological Procedures' recommended parameters. Synthetic A-type carbonated apatite prepared in controlled conditions was irradiated at room temperature with 60Co gamma rays. The ESR spectrum was associated to axial CO2- and orthorhombic CO3- species. Radicals used as dose markers in biological apatites are long-lived paramagnetic species. The stability of the post-irradiation signal of A-type apatite was investigated for almost 2 years. Measurements showed variations in the spectra attributed to unstable CO3- species, which can be eliminated by thermal treatments at 100 degrees C for 24 h. Results indicated the potential use of an A-type carbonated apatite as a dosemeter.

Polycrystalline CaSO4 powder, doped with different elements but mainly rare earths, is one of the most interesting thermoluminescent (TL) materials. Although many electron spin resonance (ESR) analyses have been reported for these materials few studies have been published about the potential of CaSO4 for ESR dosimetry; almost all studies used CaSO4:Dy with a very low Dy concentration as the material for TL measurements. Pure CaSO4 from Merck was used to prepare CaSO4:Dy and CaSO4:P:Dy with different Dy concentrations. Samples were annealed at 600 degrees C for 1 h before irradiation in a Gammacell 220 irradiator with a 60Co gamma source at a dose rate of 100 Gy x min(-1). The ESR spectra of the pure CaSO4 and CaSO4 doped with P and Dy show the lines usually observed with these types of material, with the factor g around 2.036 and an intense line at g = 2.0011 found only in the pure material. This line, probably an axial SO4-, grows linearly with absorbed dose until 1.0 kGy and shows good stability with time. The line should be stabilized by matrix impurities because it can be removed by a simple treatment with hot sulphuric acid.
