A practical and didactic sequence of experiments was proposed to illustrate the stereochemistry concept, optically active compounds, resolution of racemates, and use of the NMR technique, including 2D-COSY for identification of organic compounds, on a laboratory course for undergraduate students. The sequence was: extractions of racemic ibuprofen and chiral naproxen from commercial tablets; syntheses of diastereoisomeric amides reacting chiral (S)-(-)-α-methylbenzylamine with (±)-ibuprofen; separation and determination of absolute configuration of amides by ¹H NMR spectroscopy and GC analysis, and hydrolysis of amides to obtain (+)- and (-)-ibuprofen.

The Coordination for the Improvement of High Education Personnel (CAPES), the Brazilian federal agency for graduate programs, plays a fundamental role for the expansion and consolidation of the National Postgraduate System (SNPG) and the execution of the National Graduate Plan (PNPG) 2011-2020. In this paper, we discuss the evolution of the Brazilian graduate program in chemistry and its role in the formation of highly qualified professionals in chemistry (academic master’s degree, professional master’s degree and doctoral degree) for the academy, teachers and lecturers for all levels of the education system, as well for the non-academic market.

This work aims to synthesize the alloy Co64Nb30B6 through mechanical alloying using a planetary ball mill. A disc rotation per minute and a ball/powder weight ratio of 300 rpm and 10:1 were used, with a milled time of 10 h, respectively. The characterization of the Co64Nb30B6 alloy was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), examined by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermoanalytical techniques (TGA/DTA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and confirmed by Braunauer, Emmet e Teller (BET) method type IV isotherms with a hysteresis loop for mesoporous materials. The results indicated that the evolution of the amorphous phase in the Co64Nb30B6 composition through the mechanical alloying process exhibited good soft magnetic properties with the addition of the metalloid element B and its excellent unique ferromagnetic properties. Through thermoanalytical analysis (TGA/DTA), it was shown that at higher temperatures, Co and Nb ions are oxidized by the environment and, therefore, the mass can be slightly increased to 14.9% and a probable contribution of boron in evolution stability thermal and magnetic in the amorphous phase, respectively. This suggests that the newly developed high-performance amorphous alloy Co64Nb30B6 has great application potential.

The crude methanol extract and hexane, ethyl acetate, chloroform and methanol fractions from leaves of S. garckeana were examined in vitro for their antiproliferative activity on MCF-7, NCI-ADR, NCI-460, UACC-62, 786-0, OVCAR-03, PCO-3 and HT-29 human cancer cell lines. Among the assayed fractions, the ethyl acetate fraction showed to be cytotoxic against 786-0, UACC-62, OVCAR-03 and NCI-ADR cell lines with IC50 values of 12 µg/mL, 42 µg/mL, 53 µg/mL and 51 µg/mL, respectively. Through fractionation and isolation procedures compound (1) was obtained from the EtOAc fraction and its structure was elucidated by spectral techniques.
