Purpose This study aims to provide new knowledge on the relative importance of key life domains amongst older adults, and how the Coronavirus pandemic has influenced their life (domain) satisfaction. Methods A cross-sectional survey was administrated to an online panel of the general public aged 65 years and older in Australia from 28 April to 26 May 2020. Life satisfaction was measured by the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI, including both global life satisfaction and life domain satisfaction). A discrete choice experiment technique was used to elicit how respondents perceive the relative importance of six key life domains drawn from the PWI: standard of living, health, relationships, safety, community connectedness, and future security. Results A total of 1,056 respondents (53% female) with a mean (range) age of 73 (65–91) years old completed the survey. After controlling for a rich set of confounding factors, regardless of the choice of overall life satisfaction indicators, there were consistent findings that the strongest negative influence of COVID-19 on life domains and decrements on life satisfaction was for Personal Health, Personal Relationships and Standard of Living. The DCE data revealed that all six life domains were statistically significant in contributing to a better life, and there exists some preference heterogeneity between those who perceived no impact versus negative impacts from COVID-19. Conclusions From both revealed and stated preference data there was robust evidence that health, relationships, and standard of living represent the three most important life domains for older adults in Australia. Increased immigration requires successful interaction of different cultures in various life domains, such as health. This study investigates acculturation orientation (AO) of immigrant patients and doctors native to the country, as a potential factor related to perceived medical advice adherence. N = 171 immigrant patients (M = 54.38 years, SD = 17.94, range = 23–96, 74.3 % female) and their N = 12 doctors (M = 38.88 years, SD = 13.42, range = 27–66, 83 % female) from a hospital in Montreal, Canada, participated in a paper-based survey to assess AOs, patients’ perceived expectations of their doctor (regarding adopting the new culture or keeping their previous culture), doctors’ actual expectations, perceived quality of care and perceived adherence. AO of patients significantly related to perceived adherence, via a path model involving perceptions of doctors’ expectations and perceived quality of care. Integration was positively related to perceived adherence, while Marginalization was negatively related to it. Doctors’ AOs were not significant. Patient perceptions seem to be a significant factor to be considered when striving to improve immigrant medical advice adherence.

In this paper, a novel decomposition of adaptation, focusing on aspirations and resignation, is presented. Adaptation, response-shift and quality of life were assessed over 2 years, using the same methodology in three different health-status groups: severe mental illness (n = 149); common mental disorder (n = 354); and no disorder (n = 583). Adaptation effects occurred in all life domains including health, but in only one third of each sample. As hypothesised, aspirations tended to be associated with lower quality of life (QOL) ratings and resignation was associated with higher QOL scores (although not significantly higher, necessarily). These two effects tended to cancel each other out, so that the overall impact of adaptation was minimal. Health-status, changes in objective situation (e.g. financial circumstances) and changes in depression were all associated with QOL at follow-up, but resignation and aspiration also made independent contributions. Resignation was more closely related to changes in global ratings than to domain-specific ratings, whereas aspirations appeared consistently and made a greater contribution. The results are consistent with other measurement approaches that indicate that adaptation effects in relation to QOL, are not large.

Many Quality of Life (QoL) instruments ask respondents to rate a number of life domains in terms of satisfaction and personal importance, and derive weighted satisfaction scores by multiplying the two ratings. This paper demonstrates that this practice is both undesirable and unnecessary. QoL domains are selected on the basis of their inherent importance, rendering separate importance rating partially redundant. Weighted scores present difficulties in interpretation. Further, we show that multiplicative composites have undesirable psychometric properties. There is evidence that multiplicative composites have little or no advantage over unweighted ratings in correlational or predictive studies. Apart from the face validity and the intuitive appeal of multiplying satisfaction ratings by importance ratings, there appear to be no sound reasons for doing so, and several good reasons not to do so.

In schizophrenic patients, quality of life (QoL) studies often find high levels of general life satisfaction and satisfaction in various life domains despite deprived living conditions. Therefore, the usefulness of QoL as an outcome indicator has been questioned. Since social comparison processes have been postulated to be related to the level of satisfaction, this hypothesis was analysed empirically by the present study in schizophrenic patients. Satisfaction and social comparisons of 148 schizophrenic inpatients and 66 mentally healthy controls were examined with regard to the domains ‘health’ and ‘family’ by means of a standardised interview. The schizophrenic patients had a history of either long-term (n = 75) or short-term (n = 73) restricted and deprived living conditions. Long-term patients showed significantly higher satisfaction levels than short-term patients. They compared themselves predominantly laterally or downwards with fellow inpatients. Significant relationships between the direction of social comparisons and satisfaction ratings were found in all three samples. Social comparisons proved to be important for the level of satisfaction in schizophrenic patients. Results indicate that experiences of restricted and deprived living conditions induce accommodation processes and response-shifts that should be taken into account in the interpretation of quality-of-life data.
