Purpose: This study was guided by three research aims: firstly, to examine the longitudinal trends of health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) among gender and sexuality diverse (LGBTQA2S+) young people through adolescence (ages 14–19); secondly, to assess longitudinal associations between poor mental health and HR-QoL among LGBTQA2S+ young people through adolescence; and thirdly, to examine differences in HR-QoL among LGBTQA2S+ young people during early adolescence (ages 14 and 15) depending on select school-, peer-, and parent-level factors. Methods: This study used three of nine available waves of data from a large population-level, probability sample-based, longitudinal cohort study, namely the K′ cohort: children aged 4–5 years old at time of study enrolment followed-up biennially (~ 61% retention rate). HR-QoL weighted means and standard deviations were calculated using Child Health Utility 9D (CHU-9D) scores for LGBTQA2S+ participants at ages 14 and 15 (Wave 6), ages 16 and 17 (Wave 7), and ages 18 and 19 (Wave 8). To strategically identify policy-relevant modifiable behavioural factors suitable for prevention and early intervention, non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank tests tested differences in mean CHU-9D ranks at ages 14 and 15 (Wave 6) between groups (gender identity: trans vs. cis; identity-level sexuality: gay, lesbian, bisexual, or other diverse sexuality vs. heterosexual; group-level sexuality: sexually diverse vs. not sexually diverse) and selected school factors (school acceptance, belonging, freedom of expression), peer factors (peer relationship quality, trust, respect), and family factors (parental acceptance, understanding, trust), with Hedge's g correction statistics computed for effect sizes. Longitudinal associations between gender, sexuality, and poor mental health (depressive symptoms, anxiety, symptoms, self-harm thoughts/behaviour, and suicidal thoughts/behaviour) and HR-QoL were tested using mixed-effects models with random intercepts and random slopes for nested clustering (participants within postcodes). Results: HR-QoL disparities disproportionately affecting LGBTQA2S+ groups relative to their cisgender, heterosexual peers, were well-established by age 14 to 15 relatively steeper reductions in HR-QoL were observed throughout adolescence among all LGBTQA2S+ groups, with HR-QoL widening the most for trans participants. Poor mental health was significantly associated with HR-QoL declines. LGBTQA2S+ participants with positive school- and parent factors related to feelings of acceptance, belonging, and freedom of self-expression, reported significantly higher HR-QoL during early adolescence. Conclusion: Evidence-based public health policy responses are required to address the dire HR-QoL inequities among LGBTQA2S+ young people, particularly trans young people. Prioritising the promotion of school- and family-based interventions which foster LGBTQA2S+ inclusivity, acceptance, and a sense of belonging from early adolescence through young adulthood, represents a feasible, evidence-based, and cost-effective response to address these HR-QoL disparities [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Several studies have examined the relationship between sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, there are a lack of generalizable data on this association in Singapore. Our study aimed to (1) investigate the association between sleep quality and HRQOL and (2) examine whether age moderated these associations. Methods: Data were obtained from nationwide Singapore Mental Health Study 2016 (n = 6126, response rate = 69.5%). Sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) where higher scores indicate poorer sleep quality. HRQOL [Physical component summary (PCS) and Mental component summary (MCS)] were measured using 12-item Short-Form Survey. Associations were investigated using multivariable linear regression models, adjusted for sociodemographic, physical, and mental comorbidities. Interactions between age and sleep quality were examined by including interaction terms individually. Results: Poorer PSQI score was significantly associated with lower PCS (β = − 0.44) and lower MCS (β = − 0.73). Among PSQI components, lower PCS was significantly associated with subjective sleep quality (β = − 1.06), sleep duration (β = − 0.30), sleep disturbance (β = − 0.33), and daytime dysfunction (β = − 0.75). Lower MCS was significantly associated with subjective sleep quality (β = − 1.36), sleep latency (β = − 0.24), sleep disturbance (β = − 0.16), using of sleeping medication (β = − 1.12), and daytime dysfunction (β = − 2.08). Age moderated the association between PSQI score with PCS and MCS. Stronger association between PSQI score and MCS was observed in younger individuals (β = − 0.90) than older adults (β = − 0.45). Conclusion: Our study found that poor sleep quality was associated with HRQOL of certain age groups more than others. Purpose: The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement and Information System (PROMIS®): includes the PROMIS-29 physical and mental health summary and the PROMIS global physical and mental health scores. It is unknown how these scores coincide with one another. This study examines whether the scores yield similar or different information. Methods: The PROMIS-29 and the PROMIS global health items were administered to 5804 adults from Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) in 2021–2022 and to 4060 adults in the Ipsos KnowledgePanel (KP) in 2022. Results: The median age of those in MTurk (KP) was 36 (54) and 53% (50%) were male. Mean T-scores on the PROMIS-29 and PROMIS global physical health scales were similar, but PROMIS global mental health was 3–4 points lower than the PROMIS-29 mental health summary score. Product-moment correlations ranged from 0.69 to 0.81 between the PROMIS-29 physical health and PROMIS global physical health scales and 0.56–0.69 between the mental health scales. Multi-trait multimethod analyses indicated that only a small proportion of the correlations between the two methods of measuring mental health were significantly more highly correlated with one another than correlations between physical and mental health. Conclusions: PROMIS-29 and PROMIS global mental health scales provide different information and, therefore, study conclusions may vary depending on which measure is used. Interpretation of results needs to consider that the PROMIS-29 mental health scale is a weighted combination of specific domains while the PROMIS global mental health scale is based on general mental health perceptions. Purpose: This qualitative study (GSK study: 213635) was designed to better understand sleep disturbance as experienced by individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), and the relationship between sleep disturbance and pain and other aspects of the disease and disease activity. Methods: Sixty-minute, one-on-one, concept elicitation interviews were conducted with 30 participants (15 with RA and 15 with axSpA) from the US. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Interview transcripts were coded and analyzed to explore themes related to pain and sleep disturbance, and relationships among those themes. Results: Pain was a prominent driver of sleep disturbance; 12 participants with RA (80%) and 14 with axSpA (93%) reported that pain impacted their ability to fall asleep, while all 15 with RA (100%) and 14 with axSpA (93%) reported that pain impacted their ability to stay asleep. Two-thirds of participants with RA (67%) or axSpA (60%) described a bi-directional relationship, whereby pain worsened sleep disturbance and sleep disturbance further aggravated pain. Factors other than pain, such as fatigue and emotional health, were also reported as important contributors to sleep disturbance (RA: n = 12/15, 80%; axSpA: n = 14/15, 93%). Participants with RA or axSpA described complex interconnections between fatigue, emotional health, pain, and sleep, often labeling these relationships as "vicious cycles". Notably, half of all participants reported sleep disturbance occurring without pain or other understood causes. Purpose: Patients with heart failure (HF) possess low self-care activation and motivation, leading to a deprived quality of life and adverse mental health conditions. To this end, self-determination theory emphasizes that autonomy-supportive interventions (ASI) can stimulate intrinsic motivation and improve behaviors and quality of life. Nevertheless, studies that focused on ASI for HF are inadequate. This study aims to evaluate the effects of an HF-ASIP on self-care, quality of life and mental health in HF patients. Methods: In a two-arm randomized controlled trial, the participants are randomly allocated to the intervention (n = 41) or control (n = 41) groups. The intervention group received routine care and participated in an 8-week HF-ASIP, including individual education and consultation sessions. In contrast, the control group received only routine care. The primary outcome includes self-care management, while the secondary outcomes include self-care maintenance, quality of life, mental health, and motivation. After measuring the outcomes at baseline (T0), 4-week (T1), 8-week (T2), and 12-week (T3) follow-up, the intervention effects are assessed using the generalized equation models. Results: The outcomes indicated that self-care management (T2: P = 0.001; T3: P = 0.016), self-care maintenance (T2: P = 0.003; T3: P = 0.001), depression (T2: P = 0.007; T3: P = 0.012), anxiety (T2: P = 0.001; T3: P = 0.012), MLHFQ total score (T1: P = 0.004; T2: P < 0.001; T3: P = 0.001), autonomous motivation (T2: P =.0.006; T3: P = 0.002) showed statistically difference between the groups. Conclusion: In summary, the 8-week HF-ASIP significantly improved the attributes of self-care, quality of life, mental health, and motivation in HF patients, suggesting the potential for practical intervention effect. Purpose: Do cancer survivors experience positive changes (i.e., posttraumatic growth; PTG) resulting in better quality of life? The issue has yet to yield consistent notions. This longitudinal study extends the literature on the role of PTG by examining the curvilinear relationship between PTG and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), and explored whether PTG predicts subsequent HRQoL in a quadratic relationship across 2 years following surgery. Methods: Women with breast cancer (N = 359; Mage = 47.5) were assessed at five waves over two years. On every measurement occasion, PTG measured by the posttraumatic growth inventory and HRQoL measured by SF-36 were assessed. The five waves reflect major medical demands and related challenges in the breast cancer trajectory, in which 1-day, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months after surgery were adopted as the survey timing. In a series of hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses, the time-lagged predictions of PTG (i.e., linear, quadratic) on HRQoL were examined, controlling demographic and medical covariates. Results: The results revealed that the quadratic term of PTG consistently significantly predicted physical and mental health quality of life (PCS and MCS), while the linear term of PTG did not significantly predict PCS or MCS. Conclusion: With multi-wave longitudinal data, this study demonstrated that the relationship between PTG and HRQoL is curvilinear, and this finding extends to PTG's prediction of subsequent HRQoL. Purpose: Because physical-mental comorbidity in children is relatively common, this study tested for response shift (RS) in children with chronic physical illness using a parent-reported measure of child psychopathology. Methods: Data come from Multimorbidity in Children and Youth across Life-course (MY LIFE), a prospective study of n = 263 children aged 2–16 years with physical illness in Canada. Parents provided information on child psychopathology using the Ontario Child Health Study Emotional Behavioral Scales (OCHS-EBS) at baseline and 24 months. Oort's structural equation modeling was used to test for different forms of RS in parent-reported assessments between baseline and 24 months. Model fit was evaluated using root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), comparative fit index (CFI), and standardized root mean residual (SRMR). Results: There were n = 215 (81.7%) children with complete data and were included in this analysis. Of these, n = 105 (48.8%) were female and the mean (SD) age was 9.4 (4.2) years. A two-factor measurement model provided good fit to the data [RMSEA (90% CI) = 0.05 (0.01, 0.10); CFI = 0.99; SRMR = 0.03]. Non-uniform recalibration RS was detected on the conduct disorder subscale of the OCHS-EBS. This RS effect had negligible impact on the longitudinal change in externalizing and internalizing disorders construct over time. Conclusions: Response shift detected on the conduct disorder subscale of the OCHS-EBS, indicated that parents of children with physical illness may recalibrate their responses on child psychopathology over 24 months. Purpose: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are commonly collected in trials and some care settings, but preference-based PROMs required for economic evaluation are often missing. For these situations, mapping models are needed to predict preference-based (aka utility) scores. Our objective is to develop a series of mapping models to predict preference-based scores from two mental health PROMs: Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9; depression) and Generalised Anxiety Questionnaire-7 (GAD-7; anxiety). We focus on preference-based scores for the more physical-health-focussed EQ-5D (five-level England and US value set, and three-level UK cross-walk) and more mental-health-focussed Recovering Quality-of-Life Utility Index (ReQoL-UI). Methods: We used trial data from the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) mental health services (now called NHS Talking Therapies), England, with a focus on people with depression and/or anxiety caseness. We estimated adjusted limited dependent variable or beta mixture models (ALDVMMs or Betamix, respectively) using GAD-7, PHQ-9, age, and sex as covariates. We followed ISPOR mapping guidance, including assessing model fit using statistical and graphical techniques. Results: Over six data collection time-points between baseline and 12-months, 1340 observed values (N ≤ 353) were available for analysis. The best fitting ALDVMMs had 4-components with covariates of PHQ-9, GAD-7, sex, and age; age was not a probability variable for the final ReQoL-UI mapping model. Betamix had practical benefits over ALDVMMs only when mapping to the US value set. Conclusion: Our mapping functions can predict EQ-5D-5L or ReQoL-UI related utility scores for QALY estimation as a function of variables routinely collected within mental health services or trials, such as the PHQ-9 and/or GAD-7. Purpose: Mental health and well-being trajectories are not expected to be homogeneous in diverse clinical populations. This exploratory study aims to identify subgroups of patients with cancer receiving radiation therapy who have different mental health and well-being trajectories, and examine which socio-demographic, physical symptoms, and clinical variables are associated with such trajectories. Methods: Retrospective analysis of radiation therapy patients diagnosed with cancer in 2017 was conducted using data from the Ontario Cancer Registry (Canada) and linked with administrative health data. Mental health and well-being were measured using items from the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System—revised questionnaire. Patients completed up to 6 repeated measurements. We used latent class growth mixture models to identify heterogeneous mental health trajectories of anxiety, depression, and well-being. Bivariate multinomial logistic regressions were conducted to explore variables associated with the latent classes (subgroups). Results: The cohort (N = 3416) with a mean age of 64.5 years consisted of 51.7% females. Respiratory cancer was the most common diagnosis (30.4%) with moderate to severe comorbidity burden. Four latent classes with distinct anxiety, depression, and well-being trajectories were identified. Decreasing mental health and well-being trajectories are associated with being female; living in neighborhoods with lower income, greater population density, and higher proportion of foreign-born individuals; and having higher comorbidity burden. Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of considering social determinants of mental health and well-being, in addition to symptoms and clinical variables, when providing care for patients undergoing radiation therapy. Purpose: Researchers and service providers typically assess pediatric Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) by collecting independent reports from parents and youth. An emerging body of work indicates that patterns of parent-youth reports yield information germane to understanding youth outcomes. We identified patterns of HRQOL among youth and their parents seeking mental health treatment and examined links between agreement patterns and mental and physical health functioning. Methods: Participants included 227 youth (mean age = 14.40 years, SD = 2.42; 63% female) and parent dyads presenting at a mood disorders clinic between 2013 and 2020. We assessed HRQOL using parallel youth and parent forms of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Generic Core Scales. We also assessed youth clinical correlates of depression, suicidal ideation, and impairment, as well as health information via electronic health record (e.g., psychotropic medication usage, BMI). Results: Latent class analysis showed three parent-youth reporting patterns: Low–Low (LL), High-High (HH), and Parent Low-Youth High (PL-YH). Relative to youth in the HH group, youth in the LL and PL-YH groups reported significantly greater depressive symptoms and had higher rates of suicidal ideation and psychotropic medication use. In addition, youth in the LL group reported significantly greater levels of impairment. Conclusions: Parent-youth patterns of HRQOL reporting can reveal clinically meaningful information and indicate poorer functioning for certain groups (LL, PL-YH) of youth. Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic forced people to give up their daily routines and adjust to new circumstances. This might have affected health-related quality of life (HRQOL). We aimed to compare HRQOL during the first COVID-19 wave in 2020 to HRQOL before the pandemic and to identify determinants of HRQOL during the pandemic in Switzerland. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey during the pandemic (between May and July 2020; CoWELL sample; convenience sample). Before the pandemic (2015–2016), we had conducted a cross-sectional paper-based survey among a representative random sample of the Swiss general population (SGP sample). In both samples, we assessed physical and mental HRQOL (Short Form-36) and socio-demographic characteristics. In the CoWELL sample, we additionally assessed health- and COVID-19-related characteristics. Data were analysed using linear regressions. Results: The CoWELL sample included 1581 participants (76% women; mean age = 43 years, SD = 14 years) and the SGP sample 1209 participants (58% women, mean age = 49 years, SD = 15 years). Adjusted for sex, age, and education, the CoWELL sample reported higher physical HRQOL (PCS, +5.8 (95% CI: 5.1, 6.6), p < 0.001) and lower mental HRQOL (MCS, −6.9 (−7.8, −6.0), p < 0.001) than the SGP sample. In the CoWELL sample, especially persons with lower health literacy, who had no support network or who have had COVID-19, reported lower HRQOL. Discussion: Aspects unique to the COVID-19 pandemic affected HRQOL. Vulnerable persons such as those having had COVID-19, less support opportunities, and with lower health literacy are especially prone to impaired HRQOL during the COVID-19 pandemic. Purpose: During the first SARS-CoV-2-infection wave, a deterioration in emotional well-being and increased need for mental health care were observed among patients treated or being treated for breast cancer. In this follow-up study, we assessed patient-reported quality of life (QoL), physical functioning, and psychosocial well-being during the second SARS-CoV-2-infection wave in a large, representative cohort. Methods: This longitudinal cohort study was conducted within the prospective, multicenter UMBRELLA breast cancer cohort. To assess patient-reported QoL, physical functioning and psychosocial well-being, COVID-19-specific surveys were completed by patients during the first and second SARS-CoV-2-infection waves (April and November 2020, respectively). An identical survey was completed by a comparable reference population during the second SARS-CoV-2-infection waves. All surveys included the validated EORTC-QLQ-C30/BR23, HADS and "De Jong-Gierveld Loneliness" questionnaires. Pre-COVID-19 EORTC-QLQ-C30/BR23 and HADS outcomes were available from UMBRELLA. Response rates were 69.3% (n = 1106/1595) during the first SARS-CoV-2-infection wave and 50.9% (n = 822/1614) during the second wave. A total of 696 patients responded during both SARS-CoV-2-infection waves and were included in the analysis comparing patient-reported outcomes (PROs) during the second SARS-CoV-2-infection wave to PROs during the first wave. Moreover, PROs reported by all patients during the second SARS-CoV-2-infection wave (n = 822) were compared to PROs of a similar non-cancer reference population (n = 241) and to their pre-COVID-19 PROs. Results: Patient-reported QoL, physical functioning, and psychosocial well-being of patients treated or being treated for breast cancer remained stable or improved from the first to the second SARS-CoV-2-infection wave. The proportion of emotional loneliness reduced from 37.6 to 29.9% of patients. Compared to a similar non-cancer reference population, physical, emotional, and cognitive functioning, future perspectives and symptoms of dyspnea and insomnia were worse in patients treated or being treated for breast cancer during the second SARS-CoV-2-infection wave. PROs in the second wave were similar to pre-COVID-19 PROs. Conclusion: Although patients scored overall worse than individuals without breast cancer, QoL, physical functioning, and psychosocial well-being did not deteriorate between the first and second wave. During the second wave, PROs were similar to pre-COVID-19 values. Overall, current findings are cautiously reassuring for future mental health of patients treated or being treated for breast cancer. Purpose: While some work has been done on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in statin users, none has focused specifically on statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) sufferers. The objective was to assess self-reported HRQoL, before and after statin withdrawal, in patients reporting SAMS. We hypothesized that the presence of SAMS associated with decreased self-reported physical and mental well-being. Methods: Patients (50 men/28 women [M/W], aged 49 ± 9 years [Mean ± SD]) in primary cardiovascular prevention were recruited into three cohorts: statin users with (SAMS, 29 M/18W) or without symptoms (No SAMS, 10 M/5W) and controls (11 M/5W). The Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) was used to assess HRQoL. All variables were measured before and after 2 months of statin withdrawal, and repeated measures analyses were used to verify withdrawal and group effects as well as their interaction. Results: SF-36 physical and mental component scores (respectively, PCS and MCS) were lower in the SAMS group compared with other groups (both p < 0.01). Statin withdrawal led to an increase in LDL cholesterol for statin users (+69.0%, p < 0.01) and an improvement in well-being in the SAMS group, other groups showing no change. A time x category interaction (p = 0.02) was seen for PCS and post hoc analyses showed that statin withdrawal improved PCS and MCS (respectively, +12.5% [ES 0.77] and +5.1% [ES 0.27], both p < 0.05) in the SAMS group. Conclusion: Patients self-reporting SAMS showed improved HRQoL following drug withdrawal, but this was mirrored by a rise in LDL cholesterol. Objective: To assess the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of Chinese AIDS patients in three regions (Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Henan) and to examine the relationship between region and the HRQOL. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted from 2017 to 2018. Multistage stratified sampling was employed to recruit 1,273 AIDS patients from local Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Data were collected by means of face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire including the SF-12 and various rating scales. The multivariate linear and logistic regression models were performed to analyze the relationship of region and a variety of factors with the HRQOL and health utility. Results: The three most affected dimensions were mental health, general health, and vitality as 18.2%, 18.0%, and 16.4% of the patients reported problems respectively. The mean (SD) scores of physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS), were 48.19 (8.02) and 46.74 (10.71) respectively. The mean (SD) health utility score was 0.75 (0.13) assessed by the SF-6D derived from the SF-12. Region, age, employment status, individual income, government assistance and stigma significantly affected the patients' HRQOL (P < 0.01). BMI, opportunistic infection, treatment compliance and time of treatment were also found to be significant factors of the HRQOL. Conclusion: This study comprehensively estimated the HRQOL and health utility for the AIDS population in China, their HRQOL was mainly deteriorated in psychological dimensions, and geographical area may be closely related. Background: The genetic counseling outcome scale (GCOS-24) is commonly used in clinical genetics to measure patient empowerment; however, there is inconclusive psychometric evidence about this scale.Methods: Using data from an urban Canadian clinic where the GCOS-24 is routinely administered before (T1) and 1 month after (T2) genetic counseling, we used Rasch measurement theory (RMT) to test the ordering of response option thresholds, fit, spread of item locations, residual correlations, person separation index (PSI), and stability across time.Results: Data from 379 participants showed that the original GCOS-24 items had poor fit to the Rasch model (χ2 = 367.8, p < 0.001). Two models emerged that demonstrated excellent fit to the Rasch model. In Model 1, the response scale options were collapsed and 8 items were removed, leading to an excellent fit to the Rasch model (χ2 = 112.4, df = 144, p = 0.975), good reliability (rp = 0.82), and responsiveness to change (mean = 0.75 logits, F = 125.68, p < 0.001). In Model 2, the response scale options were collapsed, 3 items were removed, and the scale divided into two sets (GCOS-Pos, GCOS-Neg). The GCOS-Pos set showed excellent overall fit to the Rasch model (χ2 = 92.5, df = 90, p = 0.407), good reliability (rp = 0.73), and responsiveness to change (mean = 0.74 logits, F = 80.12, p < 0.001). The GCOS-Neg set showed excellent overall fit to the Rasch model (χ2 = 84.55, df = 97, p = 0.81), but poor reliability (rp = 0.19) and small, but significant responsiveness to change (mean = 0.19 logits, F = 28.73, p < 0.001).Conclusion: These models show that there are psychometric issues with the GCOS-24 scale, and our study provides options for how to measure empowerment more robustly. Purpose: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are strong predictors of poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among injured U.S. military service members (SMs). Patterns of HRQOL between injury categories and injury categories stratified by mental health (MH) symptoms have not been examined. Among deployment-injured SMs and veterans (n = 4353), we examined HRQOL and screening data for PTSD and/or depression within specific injury categories. Methods: Participants included those enrolled in the Wounded Warrior Recovery Project with complete data for HRQOL (SF-36) from June 2017 to May 2020. Injuries were categorized using the Barell Injury Diagnosis Matrix (Barell Matrix). Mean physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scores were calculated for each injury category and stratified by the presence or absence of probable PTSD and/or depression. Results: The average follow-up time that participants were surveyed after injury was 10.7 years. Most participants were male, non-Hispanic White, served in the Army, and enlisted rank. Mechanism of injury for 77% was blast-related. Mean PCS and MCS scores across the entire sample were 43.6 (SD = 10.3) and 39.5 (SD = 13.3), respectively; 50% screened positive for depression and/or PTSD. PCS and MCS scores were significantly lower within each injury category among individuals with probable PTSD and/or depression than those without. Conclusion: Among deployment-injured SMs, those with probable PTSD and/or depression reported significantly lower HRQOL within injury categories and HRQOL component (i.e., physical or mental) than those without. Findings are consistent with prior reports showing mental health symptoms to be strongly associated with lower HRQOL and suggest integration of mental health treatment into standard care practices to improve long-term HRQOL. Purpose: Fatigue is a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS) and can adversely affect all aspect of quality of life. The etiology of fatigue remains unclear, and its treatments are suboptimal. Characterizing the phenotypes of fatigued persons with MS may help advance research on fatigue's etiology and identify ways to personalize fatigue interventions to improve quality of life. The purpose of this study was to identify fatigue phenotypes; examine phenotype stability overtime; and characterize phenotypes by health and function, social and environmental determinants, psychosocial factors, and engagement in healthy behaviors. Methods: We conducted a longitudinal study over a 3-month period with 289 fatigued participants with MS. To identify fatigue phenotypes and determine transition probabilities, we used latent profile and transition analyses with valid self-report measures of mental and physical fatigue severity, the mental and physical impact of fatigue, depression, anxiety, and sleep quality. We used ANOVAs and effect sizes to characterize differences among phenotypes. Results: The best fitting model included six subgroups of participants: Mild Phenotype, Mild-to-Moderate Phenotype, Moderate-to-Severe Phenotype, Severe Phenotype, Fatigue-dominant Phenotype, and Mental Health-dominant Phenotype. The transition analysis indicated that phenotypic membership was highly stable. Variables with a large eta squared effect size included environmental barriers, self-efficacy, and fatigue catastrophizing. Conclusion: These results indicate that the magnitude of fatigue experienced may be more important to consider than the type of fatigue when characterizing fatigue phenotypes. Future research should explore whether tailoring interventions to environmental barriers, self-efficacy, and fatigue catastrophizing reduce the likelihood of transitioning to a more severe phenotype. Purpose: Lipoedema is a progressive adipose (fat) disorder, and little is known about its psychological effect. This study aimed to determine the experiences of physical and mental health and health care across stages of lipoedema. Methods: Cross-sectional, secondary data from an anonymous survey (conducted 2014–2015) in Dutch and English in those with self-reported lipoedema were used (N = 1,362, Mdnage = 41–50 years old, 80.2% diagnosed). χ2 analyses of categorical data assessed lipoedema stage groups 'Stage 1–2' (N = 423), 'Stages 3–4' (N = 474) and 'Stage Unknown' (N = 406) experiences of health (physical and psychological), and health care. Results: Compared to 'Stage 1–2', 'Stage 3–4' reported more loss of mobility (p = <.001), pain (p = <.001), fatigue (p =.002), problems at work (p = <.001) and were seeking treatment to improve physical functioning (p = <.001) more frequently. 'Stage 3–4' were more likely to report their GP did not have knowledge of lipoedema, did not take them seriously, gave them diet and lifestyle advice, dismissed lipoedema, and treated them 'badly' due to overweight/lipoedema compared to 'Stage 1–2' (p = <.001). 'Stage 3–4' were more likely to report depression (p = <.001), emotional lability (p =.033) eating disorders (p =.018) and feeling lonelier, more fearful, and stayed at home more (p = <.001) and less likely to have visited a psychologist (p = <.001) compared to 'Stage 1–2'. Conclusions: A divergent pattern of physical and psychological experiences between lipoedema stages reflects physical symptom differences and differences in psychological symptoms and health care experiences. Purpose: Prostate cancer (PCa) and its treatment can impact health-related quality of life (HRQoL). There are few studies of HRQoL in long-term PCa survivors of African ancestry from low- and middle-income countries. We examined the effect of PCa treatment on HRQoL of Jamaican PCa survivors compared with cancer-free controls and explored the effect of demographic and clinical factors on these outcomes.Methods: PCa survivors (n = 64) treated with and without ADT along with PCa-free controls (n = 88) from a case-control study of 10 years post enrolment. HRQoL was measured using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life (EORTC-QLQ-C30). Effects of demographic and clinical variables on HRQoL on PCa and type of therapy were evaluated in multivariable linear regression models.Results: HRQoL of PCa survivors (overall and by treatment group) indicated a high quality of life, comparable to PCa-free men. However, ADT-treated survivors had lower physical functioning that was of small clinical relevance compared with those not on ADT. Symptom burden scores of PCa survivors and controls were similar excluding fatigue and dyspnoea which were highest in men on ADT and controls. In multivariable models, PCa was not an important determinant of overall HRQoL, functioning or symptom burdens. Underlying medical conditions and marital status were the main contributors to HRQoL in PCa survivors.Conclusion: PCa cancer status was not an independent determinant of long-term HRQoL in Jamaican men. Purpose: To investigate the structural validity, internal consistency, measurement invariance, and construct validity of the Dutch PROMIS-29 v2.1 profile, including seven physical (e.g., pain, physical function), mental (e.g., depression, anxiety), and social (e.g., role functioning) domains of health, in a Dutch general population sample including subsamples with and without chronic diseases. Methods: The PROMIS-29 was completed by 63,602 participants from the Lifelines cohort study. Structural validity of the PROMIS-29, including unidimensionality of each domain and the physical and mental health summary scores, was evaluated using factor analyses (criteria: CFI ≥ 0.95, TLI ≥ 0.95, RMSEA ≤ 0.06, SRMR ≤ 0.08). Internal consistency, measurement invariance (no differential item functioning (DIF) for age, gender, administration mode, educational level, ethnicity, chronic diseases), and construct validity (hypotheses on known-groups validity and correlations between domains) were assessed per domain. Results: The factor structure of the seven domains was supported (CFI = 0.994, TLI = 0.993, RMSEA = 0.046, SRMR = 0.031) as was unidimensionality of each domain, both in the entire sample and the subsamples. Model fit of the physical and mental health summary scores reached the criteria, and scoring coefficients were obtained. Cronbach's alpha for the seven PROMIS-29 domains ranged from 0.75 to 0.96 in the complete sample. No DIF was detected. Of the predefined hypotheses, 78% could be confirmed. Conclusion: Sufficient structural validity, internal consistency and measurement invariance were found, both in the entire sample and in subsamples with and without chronic diseases. Requirements for sufficient evidence for construct validity were (almost) met for most subscales. Purpose: We investigated the relationship between measures of self-reported health and well-being and concurrent and prospective healthcare utilization and costs to assess the added value of these self-reported measures in understanding utilization and cost. Methods: Kaiser Permanente members (N = 6752) completed a 9-item survey measuring life evaluation, financial situation, social support, meaning and purpose, physical health, and mental health. Responses were linked to medical record information during the period 12 months before and after the survey. Results: Correlations between health and well-being measures and healthcare utilization and cost variables were generally weak, with stronger correlations for future life evaluation and selected health measures (ρ =.20–.33, ps <.001). Better overall life evaluation had a significant but weak association with lower total cost and hospital days in the following year after controlling for age, sex, and race/ethnicity (p <.001). Full multivariate models, adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, prior utilization, and relative risk models, showed weak associations between health and well-being measures and following year total healthcare cost and utilization, though the associations were relatively stronger for the health variables than the well-being variables. Conclusion: Overall, the health and well-being variables added little to no predictive utility for future utilization and cost beyond prior utilization and cost and the inclusion of predictive models based on clinical information. Perceptions of well-being may be associated with factors beyond healthcare utilization. When information about prior use is unavailable, self-reported health items have some predictive utility. Purpose: This study aims to analyze if and how conspiracy mentality is associated with mental health, burden and perceived social isolation and loneliness of informal caregivers of older individuals with care needs.Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted. Participants had to be at least 40 years of age and were drawn randomly from the German online panel forsa.omninet and questioned between the 4th and 19th of March 2021. A sample of 489 informal caregivers (relatives and non-relatives supporting individuals aged ≥ 60 years) was questioned. Conspiracy mentality, depressive symptoms, loneliness and social exclusion were measured with validated instruments (e.g., The Conspiracy Mentality Questionnaire). Questions referred to the last three months prior to assessment. Multiple linear regression analyses, adjusted for sociodemographic, economic and health factors and indicators of the pandemic, were conducted.Results: Findings indicate a significant positive association between conspiracy mentality and caregiver burden, loneliness, social exclusion, and depressive symptoms. No gender differences were found for any outcome.Conclusions: The results indicate that conspiracy mentality could be a risk factor for mental health, perceived social isolation and loneliness, and contribute to increased caregiver burden among informal caregivers of older care recipients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Accordingly, informal caregivers could benefit from actions focused on reducing conspiracy mentality during a health crisis, which could improve psychosocial health and wellbeing in this vulnerable group. Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic might add to the stressors experienced by people living with rheumatic diseases. This study aimed to examine rheumatic patients' functional and psychosocial states during the pandemic and assess its impact on their quality of life.Methods: Our time-series study included a patient-centered electronic survey, sampling adult rheumatic patients living in Saudi Arabia at different time points from March to August 2020. Patient-reported outcomes included physical function, anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, ability to participate in social roles, and pain interference domains were measured using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS-29 Profile v2.1).Results: A total of 1278 respondents were enrolled. Results showed significant variation in patients' experiences. Our analyses revealed that the physical well-being of rheumatic patients was significantly impacted, and such effect was persistent over time irrespective of public health measures to control the COVID-19 outbreak.Conclusion: Our findings consistently demonstrated the need for psychological and social consideration to improve rheumatic patients' quality of life. Purpose: To identify patterns and problems in completing composite time trade-off (C-TTO) and discrete choice experiment (DCE) exercises for the valuation of the Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (SWEMWBS) to inform the optimisation of a valuation protocol. Methods: Fourteen cognitive interviews were conducted in the UK using concurrent and retrospective think-aloud and probing techniques. Each participant completed 8 C-TTO tasks and 8 DCE tasks within a computer-assisted personal interview setting. Verbal information was transcribed verbatim. Axial coding and thematic analysis were used to organise the qualitative data and identify patterns and problems with the completion of tasks. Results: While participants found the tasks generally manageable, five broad themes emerged to explain and optimise the response to the tasks. (1) Format and structure: attention to the design of practice examples, instructions, and layout were needed. (2) Items and levels: underlying relationships were discovered across different combinations of levels of SWEMWBS items. (3) Decision heuristics: participants engaged in diverse strategies to assist trade-off decisions. (4) Valuation feasibility: certain states were difficult to imagine, compare and quantify. (5) Valuation outcome: the data quality was affected by participants' discriminatory ability across states and their time trade-off decisions. Conclusion: The interviews contributed insights regarding the robustness of the proposed methods. The application of C-TTO and DCE valuation techniques was practical and suitable for capturing individual attitudes towards different mental well-being scenarios. Purpose: The relation between diet and maternal mental health during pregnancy might be relevant to prevent adverse materno-foetal outcomes. This study examined the association of Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence and MD components with mental health during pregnancy. Methods: This secondary analysis of the GESTAFIT trial included longitudinal data from 152 pregnant women. Dietary habits were assessed with a food frequency questionnaire, and MD adherence was derived from it using the Mediterranean Food pattern. Psychological ill-being (i.e., negative affect, anxiety, and depression) and well-being (i.e., emotional intelligence, resilience, positive affect) were assessed with the Spanish version of well-established self-reported questionnaires. Cross-sectional (16th gestational week [g.w.]) and longitudinal associations (34th g.w.) between MD and mental health were studied using linear regression models. Results: A greater MD adherence was inversely associated with negative affect and anxiety; and positively associated with emotional regulation, resilience and positive affect at the 16th and 34th g.w. (|β| ranging from 0.179 to 0.325, all p < 0.05). Additionally, a higher intake of whole grain cereals, fruits, vegetables, fish, olive oil and nuts, and a lower intake of red meat and subproducts and sweets were associated with lower negative affect, anxiety, depression and higher emotional regulation, resilience and positive affect throughout gestation (|β| ranging from 0.168 to 0.415, all p < 0.05). Conclusion: A higher intake of whole grain cereals, fruits, vegetables, fish, olive oil and nuts, together with a lower intake of red meat and sweets, resulted in a higher MD adherence, which was associated with a better mental health during pregnancy. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate changes over time in quality of life, perceived stress, and serious psychological distress for individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in an urban academic health system. Methods: Phone-based surveys were completed with adult patients tested for COVID-19 during emergency department visits, hospitalizations, or outpatient visits at the Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin Health Network. Data were then matched to medical record data. Unadjusted and adjusted mixed effects linear models using random intercept were run for each outcome (physical health-related quality of life, mental health-related quality of life, perceived stress, and serious psychological distress) with time (baseline vs 3-month follow-up) as the primary independent variable. Individuals were treated as a random effect, with all covariates (age, sex, race/ethnicity, payor, comorbidity count, hospitalization, and intensive care unit (ICU) stay) treated as fixed effects. Results: 264 adults tested positive for COVID-19 and completed baseline and 3-month follow-up assessments. Of that number, 31.8% were hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 10.2% were admitted for any reason to the ICU. After adjustment, patients reported higher physical health-related quality of life at 3 months compared to baseline (0.63, 95% CI 0.15, 1.11) and decreased stress at 3 months compared to baseline (− 0.85, 95% CI − 1.33, − 0.37). There were no associations between survey time and mental health-related quality of life or serious psychological distress. Conclusions: Results suggest the influence of COVID-19 on physical health-related quality of life and stress may resolve over time, however, the influence of mental health on daily activities, work, and social activities may not. Purpose: To examine the relationships between physical health problems, and borderline or clinical levels of mental health symptoms and children's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Methods: Data were from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (2004–2018). Parents reported on their child's HRQoL (PedsQL), physical health problems and mental health symptoms (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, SDQ). A pooled cross-sectional analysis using linear regressions examined the relationships between physical health and clinical/borderline mental health symptoms, individually and when multi-morbid, and children's HRQoL, and whether these relationships vary by a range of child, family and social factors. Results: The sample comprised 47,567 observations of children aged 4–17 years. Borderline and clinical levels of mental health symptoms were associated with significantly lower HRQoL, equal to more than two-times (10.5 points) and more than three-times (16.8 points) the clinically meaningful difference, respectively. This was a larger difference than that associated with physical health problems (4.4 points). We found a significant interaction effect between physical health problems and clinical mental health symptoms which was associated with even poorer HRQoL after accounting for the individual relationships of both problems. Mental health problems were associated with poorer HRQoL for older versus younger children; and the interaction effect was significant for boys but not girls. Conclusion: Findings highlight the importance of identifying and addressing mental health symptoms in children of all ages, even if these problems do not meet formal clinical criteria. Purpose: Although there have been numerous studies investigating the mental health of individuals during the pandemic, a comparison between countries is still scarce in the literature. To explore this gap, the present study aimed to compare the mental health (i.e., anxiety and depression), quality of life (QoL), and optimism/pessimism among individuals from Brazil and Portugal during the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated factors. Method: A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil and Portugal. Data collection was carried out between May and June 2020, using an online form which was sent through social networks. A total of 2069 participants (1156 from Brazil and 913 from Portugal) were included. Depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), Anxiety (GAD-7), optimism/pessimism (Revised Life Orientation Test – LOT), QoL (WHOQOL-Bref), and sociodemographic, health, and social distancing variables were assessed. Data was analyzed using univariate and multivariate models. Results: There were remarkable differences between Brazil and Portugal in all outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic, including higher levels of depressive symptoms, anxiety, and optimism for the Brazilian individuals and higher levels of QoL and pessimism for the Portuguese individuals. The following factors were associated with the mental health and QoL in both Brazilian and Portuguese populations: gender, age, being a healthcare professional, and days in social distancing. Conclusion: Despite the fact that Brazilians were more optimistic during the COVID-19 pandemic, they had lower levels of mental health and QoL as compared to the Portuguese individuals. Purpose: Adolescence is characterized by the ongoing maturation of emotion-regulation skills and increased emotional reactivity. There is a need for a measurement tool suitable to the Ecological Momentary Assessment methodology, to better capture within-day variations in well-being, and provide fine-grained data that can help understand how environments, behaviors, and health intersect. This paper presents the development and evaluation of the Ecological MOmentary Well-Being Instrument for adolescents, designed for use in EMA. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, to develop and assess the EMOWI. A literature review, pictorial production by graphic designers, and qualitative interviews with French and Canadian professionals and adolescents helped design and evaluate the scale face validity. Quantitative evaluation of dimensionality, reliability, and validity was conducted in two samples of French 8th graders. Results: The resulting 8-item EMOWI showed excellent face validity. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a single factor hypothesis (RMSEA = 0.072). Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.85) and intraday test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.83) were high. Correlations with existing scales were consistent with preset hypotheses. Ceiling effects were evidenced for all items, yet not on the global score. Quantitative estimations were similar for the verbal and pictorial versions, but qualitative findings argued in favor of the pictorial version. Conclusion: The 8-item pictorial EMOWI is a short and innovative instrument to measure momentary well-being in adolescents aged 12 to 17 years. Its strong psychometric properties and its acceptability among adolescents make it an excellent candidate instrument for the Ecological Momentary Assessment of well-being in this population. Purpose: Prior research on the psychological consequences of skin diseases has focused on assessing mental comorbidities. The aim of this study was to investigate subjective well-being in a large sample of individuals affected by psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease, and to explore the associations with depression and disease-related parameters such as disease severity. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from March to June 2019. The link to the questionnaire was shared on websites and Facebook pages of psoriasis patient organizations and campaigns. Participants filled in validated scales measuring subjective well-being—operationalized as positive affect (PA), negative affect (NA) and satisfaction with life (SWL); and depression. Results: The data of 722 participants were analyzed. Exploratory factor analysis supported the differentiation of PA, NA, SWL, and depression as four different constructs. The respondents reported lower levels of PA than healthy individuals and judged themselves to be less happy and were less satisfied with their lives than the general population (except age group 65 + years). 40.3% of respondents were screened positive for depression. More severe psoriasis was associated with lower affective well-being and a higher risk for depression. Conclusion: The results of this study empirically supported the differentiation of subjective well-being and depression as different constructs in individuals with psoriasis, and underline the large mental burden of the disease which goes beyond a higher risk for depression. Measures of well-being should thus be incorporated in both research and clinical practice in patients with psoriasis in order to achieve a more comprehensive picture of the mental burden of this disease. Purpose: To assess score agreement between the Atroshi-Lyrén 6-item symptoms scale and the Boston 11-item symptom severity scale and compare their responsiveness in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome before and after carpal tunnel release surgery.Methods: This prospective cohort study included 3 cohorts that completed the A-L and Boston scales (conventional score 1-5) on the same occasion: a preoperative and short-term postoperative cohort (212 patients), a mid-term postoperative cohort (101 patients), and a long-term postoperative cohort (124 patients). Agreement was assessed with Lin's concordance correlation coefficient and Passing-Bablok regression analysis. Analyses using item response theory were conducted on responses from the preoperative/short-term postoperative cohort including testing of item infit/outfit. Reliability was assessed with Cronbach alpha. Overall and sex-specific effect sizes were calculated using Cohen's d.Results: Lin's CCCs were high (0.81-0.91). Passing-Bablok analysis showed constant and proportional differences in all cohorts except preoperative to short-term postoperative change. Both scales showed high reliability (alpha, 0.88-0.93). The IRT-based analyses showed infit/outfit values within the desired range. With IRT-based scoring, the A-L scale had significantly higher responsiveness than the Boston scale, overall (d, 2.02 vs 1.59), in women (d, 2.22 vs 1.77) and in men (d, 1.74 vs 1.36).Conclusion: The Atroshi-Lyrén 6-item symptoms scale and the Boston 11-item symptom severity scale show good agreement but are not equivalent in measuring CTS-related symptoms severity. Purpose: To assess patient characteristics associated with health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) and its mental and physical subcategories 3 months after diagnosis with COVID-19. Methods: In this prospective multicentre cohort study, HR-QoL was assessed in 90 patients using the SF-36 questionnaire (36-item Short Form Health Survey), which consists of 8 health domains that can be divided into a mental and physical health component. Mental health symptoms including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorders were evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-5 (PCL-5) 3 months after COVID-19. Using descriptive statistics and multivariable regression analysis, we identified factors associated with impaired HR-QoL 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis. Results: Patients were 55 years of age (IQR, 49–63; 39% women) and were classified as severe (23%), moderate (57%), or mild (20%) according to acute disease severity. HR-QoL was impaired in 28/90 patients (31%). Younger age [per year, adjOR (95%CI) 0.94 (0.88–1.00), p = 0.049], longer hospitalization [per day, adjOR (95%CI) 1.07 (1.01–1.13), p = 0.015], impaired sleep [adjOR (95%CI) 5.54 (1.2–25.61), p = 0.028], and anxiety [adjOR (95%CI) 15.67 (3.03–80.99), p = 0.001) were independently associated with impaired HR-QoL. Twenty-nine percent (n = 26) scored below the normal range on the mental health component of the SF-36 and independent associations emerged for anxiety, depression, and self-reported numbness. Impairments in the physical health component of the SF-36 were reported by 12 (13%) patients and linked to hypogeusia and fatigue. Purpose: Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) consistently report worse functional health and well-being, compared to neurotypical (NT) peers. In a series of studies, we aimed to elucidated the effects of sex, age, and their interaction on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and evaluated the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for improving health-, disability-, and autism-related QoL, with possible sex and age outcome moderators, in adults with ASD. Methods: Study 1 used the 36-Item Short Form Survey to compare mental and physical HRQoL composite scores in adults with ASD (n = 67) and matched NT adults (n = 66). Study 2 was a randomized pilot evaluation of the effect of MBSR, compared to an active control intervention with social support and relaxation education (support/education; n = 56), on the World Health Organization QoL BREF, Disability, and Autism-Specific scales in adults with ASD. Results: In Study 1, we replicated findings that mental HRQoL is worse in both men and women with ASD, compared to NT counterparts, but physical HRQoL is only worse in women with ASD. We present novel findings that older age is associated with better mental HRQoL in women with ASD only. In Study 2, MBSR improved disability-related QoL in adults with ASD over and above the support/education intervention, but both interventions improved mental HRQoL. Lastly, both interventions were more effective for HRQoL improvements in women with ASD. Purpose: This study aimed to explore associations between volunteering and various self-reported health outcomes among older people, including subjective physical and mental health, self-rated health, and self-rated happiness. Methods: This questionnaire survey was conducted in Yilan, Taiwan. By convenient sampling, a total of 3692 older people living in the community were recruited from 2012 to 2016. Participants' engagement in community volunteer activities in the past month was recorded. Subjective physical and mental health were evaluated using the Short Form-12 version2 Health Survey physical and mental component summary scores. Self-rated health and happiness were each evaluated by a single question. Participants' demographic information and comorbidities were also recorded. We conducted multiple linear regression analyses adjusted for age, sex, marital status, body mass index, educational level, living status, comorbidities, smoking status, and status of alcohol drinking. Resultss: After adjusting for covariates, volunteering was significantly associated with better subjective physical health, self-rated health, and self-rated happiness scores (B = 2.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] (1.56, 3.26); B = 3.46, 95% CI (2.66, 4.66), and B = 4.62, 95% CI (3.18, 6.05), respectively). The strength of the relationships between volunteering and various self-reported health outcomes differed. Conclusions: Volunteering has positive associations on subjective physical health, self-rated health, and happiness for older people living in the community in Yilan, Taiwan. Further follow-up studies are needed to examine the mechanisms of associations between volunteering and various self-reported health outcomes, and clarify the differences in the strength of their associations. Purpose: Social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced possibilities for activities of choice potentially threatening quality of life (QoL). We defined QoL resilience as maintaining high quality of life and studied whether walking speed, absence of loneliness, living arrangement, and stress-coping ability predict QoL resilience among older people. Methods: Community-dwelling 75-, 80-, and 85-year-old persons (n = 685) were interviewed and examined in 2017–2018 and were followed up during COVID-19 social distancing in 2020. We assessed QoL using the OPQOL-brief scale and set a cut-off for 'constant high' based on staying in the highest baseline quartile over the follow-up and categorized all others as having 'low/moderate'. Perceived restrictiveness of the social distancing recommendations was examined with one item and was categorized as 'yes' or 'no' restrictiveness. Results: Better stress-coping ability (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.14–1.28) and not being lonely (OR 2.67, 95% CI 1.48–4.63) increased the odds for constant high QoL from before to amid social distancing, and the odds did not differ according to the perceived restrictiveness of the social distancing recommendations. Higher walking speed predicted constant high QoL only among those perceiving restrictiveness (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.07–1.27). Living arrangement did not predict constant high QoL. Conclusion: During social distancing, psychosocial resources helped to maintain good QoL regardless how restrictive the social distancing recommendations were perceived to be. Better physical capacity was important for constant high QoL only among those perceiving restrictiveness presumably because it enabled replacing blocked activities with open outdoor physical activities. Purpose: This study compared the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of breast cancer (BC) patients, survivors, and age-matched women from the general population in Vietnam to address the paucity of HRQoL research and contribute to the robust assessment of BC screening and care in Vietnam. Methods: The standardised EQ-5D-5L instrument was incorporated in an online survey and a hospital-based face-to-face survey, and together with data from the Vietnam EQ-5D-5L norms study. χ2 tests assessed EQ-5D health profile associations and a Tobit regression model investigated the association between overall health status (EQ-VAS/utility scores) and sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Results: A total of 309 participants (107 patients undergoing treatment and 202 survivors who had completed treatment) provided usable responses. The dimensions that affected mostly the HRQoL of women with BC were pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. Current patients and survivors differed significantly regarding HRQoL dimensions of mobility, self-care, usual activities, and anxiety/depression. Their health utilities were 0.74 and 0.84, respectively, compared with 0.91 for age-matched Vietnamese women in the general population (p < 0.001). Treatment status (survivor vs patient), younger age, higher monthly household income, and higher education levels were associated with higher health utility. Conclusions: The results point to unmet needs in mental health support and well-being and for attention to be given to the development of a biopsychosocial system of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and psychometrically evaluate a new quality of life measure for use in people with mental health problems—the Mental Health Quality of Life questionnaire (MHQoL). Methods: The MHQoL dimensions were based on prior research by Connell and colleagues, highlighting the seven most important quality of life dimensions in the context of mental health. Items were generated following a systematic review we performed and through inviting expert opinion. A focus group and an online qualitative study (N = 120) were carried out to assess the face and content validity of the MHQoL. The MHQoL was further tested for its internal consistency, convergent validity, known-group validity and test–retest reliability among mental healthcare service users (N = 479) and members of the general population (N = 110). Results: The MHQoL consists of a descriptive system (MHQoL-7D), including s items covering seven dimensions (self-image, independence, mood, relationships, daily activities, physical health, future) and a visual analogue scale of general psychological well-being (MHQoL-VAS). Internal consistency was high (Cronbach's ∝ = 0.85) and correlations between MHQoL-7D scores and related measures (EQ-5D-5L, MANSA, ICECAP-A, and BSI) supported convergent validity. The intraclass correlation coefficient of the MHQoL-7D sum score for test–retest reliability was 0.85. Known-group validity was supported by the ability to detect significant differences in MHQoL-7D levels between service users and the general population, and between groups with different levels of psychological distress. Conclusion: The MHQoL demonstrated favourable psychometric properties and showed promise as a simple and effective measure to assess quality of life in people with mental health problems. Purpose: Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) and clinical feedback systems (CFS) are becoming increasingly prevalent in mental health services. Their overall efficacy is unclear, but quantitative evidence suggests they can be useful tools for preventing treatment failure and enhancing therapeutic outcomes, especially for patients who are not progressing in therapy. The body of qualitative material, however, is smaller and less refined. We need to know more about how ROM/CFS is used in psychotherapy, and why it is helpful for some patients, but not others. Methods: We recorded therapy sessions of 12 patients who were using a CFS as part of their therapies at an outpatient clinic in Norway. We then conducted video-assisted interviews and follow-up interviews with patients. Data were analyzed with systematic text condensation. Results: Analysis revealed three themes: (1) triggering reflections, emotions, and self-awareness, (2) Ambivalent and ambiguous self-presentation, and (3) potential for feeling understood and talking about what matters. Conclusion: Answering questions in a CFS is an interpretative and intentional process of self-presentation and the results from ROM/CFS must be interpreted and explored in conversation to be clinically useful. When they are, they have potential for enhancing the therapeutic process by stimulating self-awareness, reflexivity, and allowing access to new therapeutic topics. Further research should explore this how-to aspect of ROM/CFS with different CFS and different types of patients. Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is known to impact on patients' physical and mental health. The relationship between performance on treadmill exercise tolerance test (ETT) and health-related quality of life (HRQL)has never been specifically investigated in the setting of CAD. Methods: Consecutive patients undergoing an ETT with the Bruce protocol during a diagnostic workup for CAD (n = 1,631, age 55 ± 12 years) were evaluated. Exercise-related indices were recorded. Detailed information on cardiovascular risk factors and past medical history were obtained. HRQLwas assessed with the use of the validated 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) questionnaire. Results: Increasing age and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors and comorbidities correlated with lower scores on the physical and mental health component of SF-36(all P < 0.05). Subjects with arrhythmias during exercise and slow recovery of systolic blood pressure had lower scores on the physical health indices or the Social Role Functioning component (P < 0.05). Achieved target heart rate and good exercise tolerance were independently associated with better scores of the physical and mental health domains of SF-36 and overall HRQLscores (β = 0.05 for target HR and PCS-36, β = 1.86 and β = 1.66 per increasing stage of exercise tolerance and PCS-36 and MCS-36, respectively, P < 0.001 for all associations). Ischemic ECG changes were associated with worse scores on Physical Functioning (β = − 3.2, P = 0.02) and Bodily Pain (β = − 4.55, P = 0.026). Conclusion: ETT parameters are associated with HRQL indices in patients evaluated for possible CAD. Purpose: Sleep problems are prevalent among the general population and can cause various health problems, which may lead to decreased quality of life. However, little is known about nonrestorative sleep and its implications. This study aimed to examine the association between nonrestorative sleep and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in Chinese adults. Methods: Data were collected through a cross-sectional study of 500 adults in Hong Kong (66.4% female, average age of 39 years). The Short-Form-12 Health Survey version 2 (SF-12v2), Nonrestorative Sleep Scale (NRSS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, ENRICHD Social Support Instrument, Patient Health Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were administered. Objective sleep parameters were based on participants' sleep condition over 1 week, as measured using an ActiGraph GT9X Link. Results: Mean standardized scores for the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of the SF-12v2 and the NRSS were 50.33 ± 6.50, 49.00 ± 9.03, and 64.77 ± 12.75, respectively. After adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics, sleep quality, objective sleep parameters, social support, somatic symptoms, stress, anxiety, and depression, NRSS scores were associated with PCS (b = 0.12, 95%CI: 0.06 to 0.18, p < 0.001) and MCS (b = 0.08, 95%CI: 0.02 to 0.15, p = 0.013) scores. Furthermore, associations of NRSS score with PCS as well as MCS scores were stronger in women than in men. Conclusion: Nonrestorative sleep is a potentially modifiable risk factor for poor HRQL. Purpose: To study the prevalence and incidence of the most common eye diseases and their relation to health-related quality of life (HRQoL), depression, psychological distress, and visual impairment in the aging population of Finland. Methods: Our study was based on two nationwide health surveys conducted in 2000 and 2011. Eye disease status data were obtained from 7379 and 5710 individuals aged 30 + years, of whom 4620 partook in both time points. Both surveys included identical indicators of HRQoL (EuroQol-5 Dimension [EQ-5D], 15D), depression (Beck Depression Inventory [BDI]), psychological distress (General Health Questionnaire-12 [GHQ-12]), visual acuity, and self-reported eye diseases. We assessed the impact of known eye diseases on these factors, adjusted for age, gender, and co-morbidities. Results: Prevalence of self-reported eye diseases was 3.1/2.7% for glaucoma, 8.1/11.4% for cataract, and 3.4/3.8% for retinal degeneration in 2000 and 2011, and the average incidence between 2000 and 2011 was 22, 109, and 35 /year/10,000 individuals, respectively. These eye diseases were associated with a significant decrease in EQ-5D and 15D index scores in both time points. BDI and GHQ-12 scores were also worsened, with some variation between different eye diseases. Impaired vision was, however, the strongest determinant of declined HRQoL. During the 11-year follow-up the effect of eye diseases on HRQoL and mental health diminished. Conclusion: Declined HRQoL associated with eye diseases is more related to impaired vision than the awareness of the disease itself, and this declining effect diminished during the follow-up. Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyse the association between individual mental well-being and social, economic, lifestyle and health factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study on a representative sample of 13,632 participants (> 15y/o) from the Catalan Health Interview Survey 2013–2016 editions. Mental well-being was assessed with the Warwick–Edinburg Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). Linear regressions were fitted to associate well-being and sociodemographic, relational, lifestyle and health variables according to minimally sufficient adjustment sets identified using directed acyclic graphs. Predictors entered the model in blocks of variable types and analysed individually. Direct and total effects were estimated. Results: Health factors significantly contributed to mental well-being variance. Presence of a mental disorder and self-reported health had the largest effect size (eta2 = 13.4% and 16.3%). The higher individual impact from a variable came from social support (β = − 12.8, SE = 0.48, eta2 = 6.3%). A noticeable effect gradient (eta2 = 4.2%) from low to high mental well-being emerged according to economic difficulties (from β = 1.59, SE = 0.33 for moderate difficulties to β = 6.02 SE = 0.55 for no difficulties). Younger age (β = 5.21, SE = 0.26, eta2 = 3.4%) and being men (β = 1.32, SE = 0.15, eta2 = 0.6%) were associated with better mental well-being. Direct gender effects were negligible. Conclusions: This study highlights health and social support as the most associated factors with individual mental well-being over socioeconomic factors. Purpose: Children of parents with mental health problems (CPM) have an increased risk for impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study aims at investigating the age- and gender-specific course of HRQoL and at exploring predictors of HRQoL in CPM based on longitudinal data (baseline, 1-year and 2-year follow-up) of a German population-based sample. Methods: Longitudinal data from the German BELLA study was analyzed (n = 1429; aged 11 to 17 years at baseline). The SCL-S-9 in combination with the cutoff for the General Severity Index (GSI) from the longer SCL-90-R served to identify CPM (n = 312). At first, we compared domain-specific HRQoL according to the KIDSCREEN-27 in CPM versus Non-CPM. Focusing on CPM, we used individual growth modeling to investigate the age and gender-specific course, and to explore effects of risk and (personal, familial and social) resource factors on self-reported HRQoL in CPM. Results: Self-reported HRQoL was reduced in CPM compared to Non-CPM in all domains, but in social support & peers. However, a minimal important difference was only reached in girls for the domain autonomy & parent relation. Internalizing and externalizing mental health problems were associated with impaired HRQoL in CPM. Self-efficacy, social support and family climate were identified as significant resources, but parental mental health problems over time were not associated with any investigated domain of HRQoL in CPM. Conclusions: Adolescent female CPM may be especially at risk for reduced HRQoL. When developing support programs for CPM, self-efficacy, social support and family climate should be considered, HRQoL and mental health problems in CPM should be addressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Although the family burden of mental health problems on patients' close relatives was widely acknowledged, little was known about how mental health problems affected the quality of life of other types of social relationships of patients, through what mechanisms, and under what conditions. The study aims to explore the burden on all types of relationships of mental health patients and explain why and when the burden is unequal across different relationships. Methods: The association between different types of relationships and the levels of burden was examined with dyadic data of 1178 patient-acquaintance relationships in the United States and random effects multilevel models. Frequency of contacts was tested as a mediator. The severity of mental health problems was tested as a moderator. Results: All types of relationships of patients borne a significant burden. Close relatives including parents, spouses, children, and siblings suffered a greater burden than distant relatives and non-relatives. The unequal burden was partly explained by the frequency of contacts with patients. The burden of close relatives significantly increased when patients' mental health problems were more severe. Conclusion: Mental health patients put a burden on their frequent contacts outside core families, especially when their problems were more severe. Objectives: The Child Health Utility 9D (CHU9D) currently represents the only preference-based health-related quality-of-life instrument designed exclusively from its inception for application with children. The objective of this study was to examine the construct validity and responsiveness of the proxy-reported (parent) CHU9D in a mental health setting using utility weights derived from an adult and adolescent population, respectively. Methods: The discriminant validity and convergent validity were examined using the mental health-specific 'The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire' (SDQ) and the generic KIDSCREEN-27. Responsiveness was assessed by examining the floor-ceiling effects, the magnitude of change over time, and the ability to differentiate between improvement and no improvement. Results: The study included 396 children with mental health problems. CHU9D showed good construct validity, with correlation coefficients ranging between 0.329 and 0.571 for SDQ Impact score and KIDSCREEN-27 Psychological Well-being. CHU9D was able to distinguish between groups of children with different levels of mental health problems (p < 0.001). The absolute magnitudes of the group mean differences were larger using adolescent weights. No evidence of a floor/ceiling effect was found at the baseline. A standardized response mean of 0.634–0.654 was found for the children who experienced clinically significant improvements. CHU9D was able to discriminate between children who experienced positive and no health improvements (p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study provides the first evidence on responsiveness for CHU9D in a mental health context. The findings demonstrate that CHU9D is an appropriate HRQOL measure for use in mental health trials. Purpose: A short adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) measure is needed with non-intrusive items that include subjective evaluations of childhood. We validated a short Difficult Childhood Questionnaire (DCQ) that assesses ACEs using personal perceptions of events. Methods: The study relied on 2019 data from a representative survey (N = 28,047) in Norway. We examined the DCQ's factor structure, internal consistency, and discriminant validity in a multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. As a group variable, we used whether the respondent had the ACE of parental alcohol use disorder (adult children of alcoholics; ACOA). To assess the DCQ's convergent validity, we used latent regression analysis with adulthood quality of life (QoL) as the outcome and mental distress and loneliness as potential mediators. Results: The DCQ's latent mean was 0.86 (95% CI 0.82–0.90, p < 0.001) higher in the ACOA versus the non-ACOA group. The effect size suggested a large magnitude of this difference. The DCQ score was negatively associated with QoL and positively associated with mental distress and loneliness. For the score's QoL effect [− 0.84 (95% CI − 0.87 to − 0.80, p < 0.001)], − 0.80 was indirect, and − 0.04 was direct. Thus, most of the association of DCQ with QoL occurred via mediators. Conclusions: The results confirmed the DCQ's discriminant and convergent validity and highlight this tool as an empirically supported approach to assess ACEs. Purpose: Severe restrictions related to COVID-19 were implemented almost simultaneously in Italy and Israel in early March 2020, although the epidemic situation in both countries was significantly different. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine how and to what extent the severe restrictions affected the mental health and health-related quality of life of non-infected people, in a comparison between Israel and Italy. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted during the first week of May 2020 among 510 Israeli and 505 Italian participants. Anxiety and depression levels were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4), and the short form-8 health survey (SF-8) questionnaire measured health-related quality of life. Linear hierarchic regression forced steps analysis was performed to measure the unique contribution of each variable to predicting health-related quality of life. Results: After adjusting for socioeconomic variables, the results showed a significantly higher anxiety level and lower health-related quality of life in the Italian participants. The anxiety and depression variables predicted lower health-related quality of life. Physical activity was found to be a protective factor. Conclusion: The results suggest that early monitoring of anxiety and depression in situations such as quarantine may detect the risk for decline in health-related quality of life. Purpose: Individuals post-stroke might have high levels of post-stroke fatigue (PSF) which might affect their quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of post-stroke fatigue in Jordan and to comprehensively identify its possible associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional design was implemented through one-hour face-to-face assessment sessions. The modified fatigue impact scale, 12-item Short-Form Health Survey, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Motor Assessment Log, Upper Extremity Fugl Meyer assessment, Nine Hole Peg Test, 10 Meter Walk Testing, active and passive goniometry, Hand-held dynamometry, and modified Ashworth scale were used as outcome measures. Prevalence of post-stroke fatigue and levels of quality of life were reported using descriptive analyses. Multiple variable linear regression analysis was used to identify PSF associated factors of post-stroke fatigue. P < 0.05 was considered significant for all statistical tests. Results: 153 individuals with stroke participated in the study. A total of 117 participants (69.9%, 95% CI = 62.0–77.1%) were fatigued. Fatigue was significantly predicted by mental component of quality of life (β −0.42 [95% CI −0.53–−0.31]; p < 0.001), cognition (β −0.69 [95% CI −1.08–−0.29], p = 0.001), weekly sport hours (β −0.94 [95% CI −1.73–−0.14], p = 0.022), and shoulder abduction spasticity (β −1.81 [95% CI −3.38–−0.24], p = 0.024. The model explained 51% of the variation in the fatigue (F = 29.006, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Jordanian individuals with stroke have a high prevalence of fatigue. Mental related quality of life was significantly associated with PSF levels. Other factors significantly associated with PSF included cognition status, sport participation, and spasticity. Healthcare practitioners working in neurorehabilitation should take PSF and its significant correlates into consideration when treating individuals with stroke. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Elderly living alone in South Korea report higher rates of psychological distress compared to the population at large. Using a person-centered approach, the aim of the present study was to identify the latent profiles of South Korean elderly living alone based on self-esteem, life satisfaction, and depression. Method: Latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted based on data of 1545 older age individuals living alone. In addition, we examined significant factors that differentiate the observed profiles using multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: We identified five profiles: "extremely depressed (n = 44, 2.9%)," "severely depressed (n = 169, 10.9%)," "mildly depressed (n = 529, 34.2%)," "low life satisfaction (n = 128, 8.3%)," and "positive adaptation (n = 675, 43.7%)." In addition, results of multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that males (OR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.02–2.81), and elderly with lower income (OR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.81–0.91), lower level of physical health (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.33–0.57), and lower social relationship satisfaction (OR: 0.25; 95% CI: 0.18–0.35) were more likely to fall in the "low life satisfaction" rather than the "positive adaptation" profile. In addition, being female (OR: 0.48; 95% CI: 0.30–0.79), of older age (OR: 1.04; 95% CI: 1.01–.1.07), and higher income (OR: 1.14; 95% CI: 1.08–1.20) were related to classification in the "mildly depressed" rather than the "low life satisfaction" profile. The "severely depressed" group was differentiated by older age (OR: 1.05; 95% CI: 1.01–1.08), lower level of physical health (OR: 0.49; 95% CI: 0.34–0.71), and lower satisfaction with social relationship (OR: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.38–0.76). Conclusion: The results highlight the need for welfare policies that secure income and physical health in elderly living alone to enhance their quality of life. Furthermore, interventions that aim to maintain social networks are tantamount in order to prevent isolation in the elderly living alone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
