In this paper, we reflect on 'scientific' governmental and media responses to Covid-19 in the UK, illuminating their negative impacts on complex and emergent touch forms/practices and people's related emotions. The scientisation of the pandemic led to the government initially placing the country in lockdown and enforcing social distancing. It thereby regulated and proscribed routine and normative touch practices in order to save lives. However, such strategies were not accompanied by an awareness that increased touch deprivation could be emotionally harmful, that lockdown could exacerbate abusive touch in the privatised familial domestic sphere, and that paid care-giver touch in other contexts, such as care homes for the elderly, could also be potentially lethal. These negative consequences are important for social workers to understand and appropriately respond to, as they disproportionately impact vulnerable and marginalised groups and are heightened for service users, who are frequently members of many disadvantaged groups simultaneously. This paper attempts to explore the relationship between different forms of knowledge and the kinds of activity that arise from them within child protection social work practice. The argument that social work is more than either ‘science’ or ‘art’ but distinctly ‘practice’ is put through a historical description of the development of Aristotle’s views of the forms of knowledge and Hannah Arendt’s later conceptualisations as detailed in The Human Condition (1958). The paper supports Arendt’s privileging of Praxis over Theoria within social work and further draws upon Arendt’s distinctions between Labour, Work and Action to delineate between different forms of social work activity. The author highlights dangers in social work relying too heavily on technical knowledge and the use of theory as a tool in seeking to understand and engage with the people it serves and stresses the importance of a phenomenological approach to research and practice as a valid, embodied form of knowledge. The argument further explores the constructions of service users that potentially arise from different forms of social work activity and cautions against over-prescriptive use of ‘outcomes’ based practice that may reduce the people who use services to products or consumables. The author concludes that social work action inevitably involves trying to understand humans in a complex and dynamic way that requires engagement and to seek new meanings for individual humans. Peer research has the potential to empower young people to participate in research by minimising power imbalances between researchers and participants; this may reduce bias and promote improved understanding to inform policy and practice. However, these benefits are not automatic; the relative inexperience of peer researchers adds layers of complexity to the research process. Moreover, the validity of findings from research adopting less traditional methods may be questioned and policy makers may be cautious about accepting this evidence, thus limiting its contribution and impact. This paper explores the advancement of participatory peer researcher methodology in research with children in and leaving care and ethical, practical and data quality issues that arose in two studies exploring young people’s transitions from care to adulthood. It concludes that the peer research methodology can yield rich data but that adequate resources and effective research management are crucial. The authors also caution against a reductionist approach that privileges peer research methodology above other methods of inquiry in the study of transitions from care to adulthood. This article reflects on journal practices in a study of The British Journal of Social Work conducted as a multiple method historical case study, focussing on the first 40 years of the journal. What constitutes a journal's identity is slippery. Broadly speaking, there are those practices that are located primarily within the immediate creation of volume upon volume, and there are practices through which the journal interacts with those worlds that touch on its boundaries. Editorial appointments, editors' visions, the work of reviewers, and the infrastructure of technology are all located fairly close to the journal's day-to-day practice. In this article, the focus is on these comparatively internal practices. This includes becoming a British Journal of Social Work editor; doing the job; reviewers and reviewing; editorial judgement; and technology. We gained a strong sense of continuity in terms, for example, of how those to whom we spoke understood the journal's identity, and managing editorial succession. There were tensions – perhaps essential – manifested in the deployment of rhetorical arguments and pleas. Instability in the lives of young people in care is a public health concern. Placement moves and loss of relationships can have serious implications for young people's overall functioning, as well as their future life outcomes. Despite this, research often lacks the perspective and voice of young people in care. In this qualitative research, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to provide a deeper insight into young people's perceptions and beliefs about their care experiences to explore the impact of these on their ability to achieve a sense of stability and permanency across time. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six males from UK foster, residential and semi-independent care homes. The main themes highlighted young people's perceptions of their care environment, relationships with others, sense of self and future under the overarching issue of permanence. Policy and practice implications propose strategies to target instability at the micro-level and how that may facilitate positive outcomes. The study revealed insights that may be helpful for frontline professionals and highlight to policy makers the importance of ensuring environmental and relational stability. An awareness of attachment theory to implement effective caregiving, should be a priority for training parents, caregivers, professionals and policy makers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes a pilot qualitative research study, exploring the impact of bereavement experiences, on pre-qualifying social work students in two UK Universities with diverse demographics. The research study took place in the context of general concern about the mental health of UK University students and suggests that social work students may be at particular risk of developing emotional wellbeing issues linked to bereavement. Interviews followed a free association narrative technique, with analysis of the data highlighting four main themes. Firstly, bereavement is associated with practical problems which may trigger wellbeing issues. Secondly, there is an increased need for specific bereavement training and support to be embedded within social work programmes, alongside skills and knowledge of cultural diversity and the part this plays in the bereavement process. Lastly, the study demonstrated that bereavement experiences are not isolated but linked to other losses and therefore students may need effective support to process these before they can effectively support others. The study appears to be distinctive in its focus on the impacts of bereavement on social work students and has significant implications for the ways in which students are supported by social work education programmes, as well as paving the way for further research in this area. Atmosphere is a neglected topic in social work, and so this article considers the production of atmospheres amongst the residents of an extant 1960s housing scheme in Edinburgh (UK). This is in order to address not only the complexity of feelings about living on such an estate but also to consider what consequences the paying of attention to atmosphere's production and effects might have for a social work concern with welfare and wellbeing. The article is based upon semi-structured and walking interviews with 17 residents – council or private renters and home-owners – of Claremont Court, a mixed, low-rise estate and analyses their description and crafting of atmosphere as a way to understand questions of belonging, welfare and community in situ. After reviewing some existing research on atmosphere and outlining methodological issues relating to the Claremont Court project, the article goes on to consider how residents described their feelings about or sense of the estate and its design before discussing the emergence of contradictory narratives about home. The production of narratives about those needing welfare support is particularly pertinent to atmospheric accounts of the housing scheme, and so the article addresses this before finally making an argument for the relevance of immersive and emplaced accounts of space and place for both social work practice and research. This article presents findings from an ethnographic study of child protection social workers in Britain, which explored social workers’ experiences of and practices in space and place. It draws on data from interviews with practitioners and observations that were carried out as social workers moved around the places (the town, estates, streets and areas around service users’ homes) where they worked. It focuses on the significance of a particular affective experience, the uncanny, which social workers evoked in many of their accounts of these places. The article introduces recent conceptualisations of space, affect and the uncanny before going on to consider data from the interviews. The following themes are explored: the relationships between the intimate spaces of service users’ homes and the neighbourhoods in which they were located; social workers’ accounts of feeling vulnerable in public and open spaces; social workers’ experiences of feeling unsettled by apparently mundane features of neighbourhood spaces. The article draws on critical engagements with the uncanny to consider its significance for child protection social work practice in Britain and its consequences in terms of social workers’ potential to work in emplaced and locally sensitive ways. This commentary offers some of the author's experiences of parenting a child with a severe learning disability and complex and challenging behaviours. Drawing on principles of auto-ethnography and critical reflection, the author considers issues of transition from children's to adult social care services and the potential for support from a new piece of UK Legislation, the Care Act, 2014. Supervision is a core activity in social work in the UK and elsewhere, widely associated with a range of positive outcomes for service users and professionals, while Public Inquiries and Serious Case Reviews have identified poor supervision as a factor in some child deaths. While there is agreement on the nature and value of ‘good’ supervision there are debates on the possibilities of delivering it in today’s pressured, poorly resourced working environments and a lack of data on what actually happens in supervision. This article presents some findings from interviews with social workers and their managers drawn from a wider study on how social workers make decisions in child protection work. They suggest that supervision is an important site for evaluating practitioner accounts and thereby constructing knowledge and making decisions about cases against a background of uncertainty and complexity. However, the ways in which these processes were negotiated shed light on supervision as a complex social process with a range of unofficial, tacit functions, embedded in the webs of social actions and exchanges that created and sustained the identities of the practitioners and their teams. What also emerged were the complex skills experienced supervisors developed in challenging and refining practitioner accounts, skills which novice supervisors struggled to acquire. This article reviews literature to provide context for a reflective narrative on a collaborative research project undertaken by disabled people, practitioners and academics. This approach required reconsidering many aspects of methodology and practice as the research relationships are altered. The article reflects on how the collaborative and participatory approach was developed and sustained and how it impacted on the research process and its outcomes. The article explores how the group of people worked together on a complex large-scale research project to bring the voices of service users and other key players together in a discussion about social care. We are interested in exploring the use of visual arts in teaching relationality and difference within social work education. Our current research is based on the examination of photographic works on the subject of asylum seeking. In this article, we report on our findings from an analysis of the exhibit Leave to Remain. Leave to Remain is an installation of large format photographic prints, accompanied by individual testimonies. Beginning in 2002, photographer Diane Matar interviewed and photographed over 100 politically displaced people living in Britain. Her exhibit functions as a visual and oral history of how life in Britain is for people seeking asylum. In this article, we analyse Matar’s work using contemporary visual methodology, and present segments of our conversation with one another that provide the texture of this methodology. We conclude that relationality and difference are imbued in questions about vulnerability and what Judith Butler (2004: 28) calls ‘the fundamental sociality of embodied life’ — that we are each ‘implicated in lives that are not our own’. UK government policy advocates involving children in decisions about their lives. However, disabled children are often marginalized and not consulted, especially those with learning and communication impairments. Drawing on an ongoing English Government funded longitudinal study exploring different groups of service users' choices, this article demonstrates the important contribution that qualitative research methods, especially non-traditional methods, can procure when working with young people who are nonverbal or have limited speech. Working with young people with life-limiting conditions raises some specific challenges for researchers. Here, adapting project wide materials and research methods in order to gain some thematic continuity across different service user groups. Some of these considerations and challenges will be discussed, especially the development of non-verbal forms of communication (talking mats™). Practical experiences, both positive and negative will be examined. The article concludes by considering some wider implications of using symbols based methods for future research and how these methods can be used across disciplines and by practitioners in their everyday work. In 2004, a regional government funded Teenage Pregnancy Reintegration Service commissioned the Salford Centre for Social Work Research, University of Salford, UK, to undertake an evaluation of their work. The project was primarily concerned with the experiences of young people who had become parents under the age of 16 years. Following extended negotiation on methodological design (which in addition to the consideration of ethical principles took into account the competing perspectives of the standpoint and positioned perspectives) qualitative research involving the narrative accounts of teenagers and their parents/carers was embarked upon. This article outlines and reflexively explores some of the methodological difficulties encountered, with particular attention being given to the challenge of eliciting narratives from teenage mothers. This exercise provides an example of the way in which stigmatizing discourses and emotional defences may contribute to the recruitment of research respondents and the narrative accounts provided. It is intended that this will illustrate the complexities involved when sensitive topics are pursued. While emanating from an empirical project and debates that are occurring within a particular social location (the UK at the beginning of the 21st century), the insights developed may be of interest to the social work and research community in general. Drawing upon interview data from a study investigating the experiences of 20 non-resident mothers in the UK, this article explores the narratives of two participants, one who volunteered to become the non-resident parent and one who lost residence against her will. The central focus of the article is concerned with participants' discursive management of their atypical situation. Specific attention is paid to the different ways in which these women presented their situations and how they positioned themselves in relation to dominant cultural scripts surrounding motherhood. It is argued that non-resident mothers are at risk of isolation as a consequence of social stigma and this may pose barriers to their taking a full and active part in the lives of their children. Suggestions are made whereby social workers might play a useful role in facilitating and supporting non-resident mothers within their locality. The issues raised have relevance for other western jurisdictions operating within a framework of gender-neutral family policy because, the number of nonresident mothers can be expected to rise in line with high family breakdown and divorce rates. Prior to writing this article, the two authors (Bogolub, US and Thomas, UK) conducted separate qualitative research studies with foster children. After briefly describing their individual studies, the two authors engage in a cross-cultural dialogue based on their differing perspectives on the importance of birth parent consent for foster children's research participation. The authors' differences appear largely, although not exclusively, related to contrasts between a US academic culture, which often stresses the fiduciary relationship between parents and developing children, and a UK academic culture, which places more emphasis on children's competence and independence. Conclusions center on the importance of cross-cultural dialogue as a way to promote considered decisions about the overlapping methodological and ethical questions that inevitably arise when doing research with children, particularly those involved with the child welfare system. The article presents an overview of the book "Better Times Than This: Youth Homelessness in Britain," by Tom Hall. Tom Hall's ethnographic study of homeless youth in Southerton, Britain is a compelling and thoughtful analysis both through a substantive and methodological lens. Methodologically, the author has provided readers with an intimate portrait of the complexities of lived experiences for a number of homeless youth. Through ethnographic tools including participant observation and, to a lesser extent, in-depth semi-structured interviews, the reader has the feeling that he/she is traveling through the daily life events of homeless adolescents. From a substantive foundation, the reader is provided with a compassionate and eloquent exploration of adolescent culture for a group of youth excluded and disengaged from mainstream society.

Recent research provides evidence of collaboration between health and social care agencies in the UK, but without specifically discussing research capacity. Shared concerns include critiques of the dominant hierarchy of methods in healthcare research, and of simplistic approaches to the research-practice relationship. A study carried out in 2000-1 found evidence of poor research infrastructure within social services. However, there is also evidence of innovative developments, utilizing specific expertise in user involvement and action research. Study participants welcomed joint health and social care research training; barriers to participating in research included lack of confidence, limited time or training for research, low recognition for research activity and uneven supervision. We describe the initiatives that have developed in response to the study, and comment on developments in research governance. These present opportunities for increased collaboration at the primary health care/social care interface, although there is a need to maintain a pluralistic approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
