Interviews with individuals experiencing homelessness can be challenging for various reasons, including mental and physical health issues, substance use, and negative experiences with authority figures. Researchers have used photos to facilitate communication and empower participants during data collection. We analyzed data from a previous study to explore the use of researcher-generated photos during interviews about health with 13 women experiencing homelessness. Conversation analysis revealed clear patterns regarding the use of the photos during the interviews. The photos were referred to 118 times over the total interview length, 6 hours and 23 minutes, with the interviewer making 62% of the referrals and the women accounting for 38%. Fifty-nine percent of the referrals occurred within the first 5 minutes of the interviews. The women used the photos to trigger associations and emotions, to describe photo content, or in a minor role during the interview. Interpretations from an advisory board of six women with lived experiences of homelessness suggested that the photos did not engage participants as intended, highlighting the importance of considering participants' perspectives when designing photo-elicitation methods. The feedback also provided valuable insights into interview locations and incentives in research that may have influenced the women's willingness to use the photos. Those closest to people with lower-grade gliomas (LGGs) often assume the role of informal caregiver (IC). The additional responsibilities mean ICs of people with cancer can experience adverse impacts on their own lives. We explored the emotional impact of informal caregiving for people with LGGs. This was a descriptive qualitative study within the multi-method Ways Ahead project. We conducted semi-structured interviews with individuals from the United Kingdom, who currently, or in the past 5 years, informally cared for someone with an LGG. Interviews encompassed experiences of emotional impact as a consequence of caregiving for someone with an LGG. Inductive thematic analysis was undertaken. We interviewed 19 ICs (mean age 54.6 years; 14 females, 5 males). Participants reported substantial emotional impact. Four themes and associated subthemes were generated: Emotional responses to the illness (e.g. feeling helpless), Emotional responses to the unknown (e.g. anxiety about future uncertainty), Emotional consequences of care recipient changes (e.g. challenges of changed relationship dynamics), and Emotional weight of the responsibility (e.g. feeling burnout). Emotional impact in one area often exacerbated impact in another (e.g. future uncertainty impacted feelings of helplessness). Participants detailed the factors that helped them manage the emotional impact (e.g. being resilient). ICs of people with LGGs can experience wide-ranging emotional responses to and impacts of the illness, uncertain prognosis, care recipient changes, and the toll of caregiving. Adjustment and resilience are key protective factors, though further consideration of ways to identify and fulfil the emotional support needs of ICs of people with LGGs is required. Aphasia, a language disability, can profoundly affect a person's mood and identity. The experiences of participants who received Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, a psychological intervention, were explored in the Solution-Focused brief therapy In poststroke Aphasia (SOFIA) Trial. Thirty participants with chronic aphasia, 14 with severe aphasia, participated in in-depth interviews that were analyzed using framework analysis. Two overarching themes emerged: valued therapy components (exploring hopes, noticing achievements, companionship, sharing feelings, and relationship with therapist) and perceptions of progress (mood, identity, communication, relationships, and independence). Participants were categorized into four groups: (a) "changed," where therapy had a meaningful impact on a person's life; (b) "connected," where therapy was valued primarily for companionship; (c) "complemental," where therapy complemented a participant's upward trajectory; and (d) "discordant," where therapy misaligned with participants' preference for impairment-based language work. This study suggests that it is feasible to adapt a psychological therapy for people with aphasia, who perceive it as valuable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Psychological problems are common among people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) following stoma surgery. However, the ways in which stoma-related psychological needs are identified and addressed in health care settings remain unexplored. In this study, we investigated the perspectives of young people with a stoma and health care professionals about access to psychological support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with young people with an IBD stoma (18–29 years, n = 13) and health care professionals (n = 15), including colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, specialist nurses in IBD and stoma care, and general practitioners in England. Data collection and analysis were informed by constructivist grounded theory. Three analytic categories were developed: "initiating support-seeking," "affirming psychological needs," and "mobilizing psychological support," which capture young peoples' trajectory to access psychological support. Based on the findings, we highlight the need for both patients and health care professionals to assign greater priority to the identification of psychological symptoms post-stoma surgery. Little is known about what recovery means to those with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis, a poorly understood, disabling chronic health condition. To explore this issue, semi-structured interviews were conducted with patients reporting improvement (n = 9) and deterioration (n = 10) after a guided self-help intervention, and analyzed via "constant comparison." The meaning of recovery differed between participants—expectations for improvement and deployment of the sick role (and associated stigma) were key influences. While some saw recovery as complete freedom from symptoms, many defined it as freedom from the "sick role," with functionality prioritized. Others redefined recovery, reluctant to return to the lifestyle that may have contributed to their illness, or rejected the concept as unhelpful. Recovery is not always about eliminating all symptoms. Rather, it is a nexus between the reality of limited opportunities for full recovery, yet a strong desire to leave the illness behind and regain a sense of "normality." [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to explore the impact of three early phases of renal dialysis, namely pre-dialysis, starting dialysis, and establishing dialysis, on dyadic relationships. Twenty UK-based dyads (20 male patients and their female partners) participated in semi-structured interviews and discussed the effects of dialysis on themselves and their relationship. Dyadic thematic analysis, facilitated by dyadic-level charting, integrated participants' experiences and enabled identification of patterns across dyads. We found that dialysis had positive and negative influences on identity, social relationships, and mental health, forming the themes: Prioritizing the Patient, Carrying the Burden, and Changing Identities. The final theme, Managing the Relationship, described how dyads prevented dialysis from negatively impacting their relationship. Dyadic-level charting provided a systematic examination of individual and dyadic experiences. These findings indicate that access to informational and support services for dyads as they prepare to start dialysis may minimize negative effects on their relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is a systematic methodological literature review with the goal of understanding how and why health communication researchers are using mixed methods research (MMR) to better understand interpersonal communication between diabetes patients, their loved ones, and health care professionals. First, we provide a brief overview of MMR, followed by a discussion of the appropriateness of using MMR in health research. We then explain our search procedures for identifying MMR studies about interpersonal diabetes communication and describe our analysis of the identified studies. We then offer a brief, quantitative summary of our findings and provide details of exemplar studies to illustrate the unique value added by using MMR. Psychological therapies should be delivered in psychiatric inpatient settings to people experiencing psychosis. However, inpatient populations present with complex needs and usually are admitted only briefly. This makes the delivery of psychological therapies for people experiencing psychosis particularly challenging. Our aim was to explore the adaptations required to deliver psychological therapies to this population from the perspective of inpatient psychological practitioners. Twelve participants were recruited, and a qualitative semistructured interview schedule was administered examining their perspectives on important factors required to deliver psychological interventions in this context. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three superordinate themes were identified: "crisis-focused psychological approaches," "working with and supporting the wider system," and "environmental adaptations." Traditional psychological therapies are a challenge to deliver in inpatient environments due to complex needs, essentiality of team working, and brief admission. Websites advocating the benefits of eating disorders ("Pro-Ana") tend to reinforce and maintain restrictive eating and purging behaviors. Yet remarkably, no study has explored individual accounts of disengagement from these sites and the associated meanings. Using narrative inquiry, this study sought to address this gap. From the interviews of six women, two overarching storylines emerged. The first closely tied disengagement to recovery with varying positions of personal agency claimed: this ranged from enforced and unwelcomed breaks that ignited change, to a personal choice that became viable through the development of alternative social and personal identities. A strong counternarrative to "disengagement as recovery" also emerged. Here, disengagement from Pro-Ana was storied alongside a need to retain an ED lifestyle. With "recovery" being just one reason for withdrawal from Pro-Ana sites, clinicians must remain curious about the meanings individuals ascribe to this act, without assuming it represents a step toward recovery. Active aging, using the conventional sense of activity, might be difficult to achieve for people with chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP). Given that a large number of older people will develop CMP, it is important to consider a broader conceptualization of activity and how this might fit into discourses of aging. We report findings from a study of the experiences of chronic pain in the daily life of 60 older people. In this article we focus on the role and meanings of physical activity for those older people. We develop a typology of styles—deliberate, strategic, and natural—to show how people approached physical activity and how its meaning differed for individuals in different contexts and across their life course. We suggest a more balanced perspective of aging in which “slowing down” might also be a desirable outcome for some older people with CMP but is not incompatible with well-being. We compared the illness narratives of 9 male and 9 female United Kingdom stroke survivors using Frank’s typologies of illness narratives. Most respondents presented a single dominant narrative genre (“quest memoir,” “restitution,” “chaos,” or a new “despair” genre); none presented quest manifesto or automythology narratives of social action or self-reinvention. We found no gender differences apparent in which genres respondents presented. Stroke severity and the degree of anticipated or actual recovery largely influenced which genre predominated in individual accounts. Contrary to some sociological understandings of gender and health, gender appeared to be less influential on stroke survivors’ illness accounts than aspects of the illness, such as its severity.
