Those closest to people with lower-grade gliomas (LGGs) often assume the role of informal caregiver (IC). The additional responsibilities mean ICs of people with cancer can experience adverse impacts on their own lives. We explored the emotional impact of informal caregiving for people with LGGs. This was a descriptive qualitative study within the multi-method Ways Ahead project. We conducted semi-structured interviews with individuals from the United Kingdom, who currently, or in the past 5 years, informally cared for someone with an LGG. Interviews encompassed experiences of emotional impact as a consequence of caregiving for someone with an LGG. Inductive thematic analysis was undertaken. We interviewed 19 ICs (mean age 54.6 years; 14 females, 5 males). Participants reported substantial emotional impact. Four themes and associated subthemes were generated: Emotional responses to the illness (e.g. feeling helpless), Emotional responses to the unknown (e.g. anxiety about future uncertainty), Emotional consequences of care recipient changes (e.g. challenges of changed relationship dynamics), and Emotional weight of the responsibility (e.g. feeling burnout). Emotional impact in one area often exacerbated impact in another (e.g. future uncertainty impacted feelings of helplessness). Participants detailed the factors that helped them manage the emotional impact (e.g. being resilient). ICs of people with LGGs can experience wide-ranging emotional responses to and impacts of the illness, uncertain prognosis, care recipient changes, and the toll of caregiving. Adjustment and resilience are key protective factors, though further consideration of ways to identify and fulfil the emotional support needs of ICs of people with LGGs is required. Aphasia, a language disability, can profoundly affect a person's mood and identity. The experiences of participants who received Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, a psychological intervention, were explored in the Solution-Focused brief therapy In poststroke Aphasia (SOFIA) Trial. Thirty participants with chronic aphasia, 14 with severe aphasia, participated in in-depth interviews that were analyzed using framework analysis. Two overarching themes emerged: valued therapy components (exploring hopes, noticing achievements, companionship, sharing feelings, and relationship with therapist) and perceptions of progress (mood, identity, communication, relationships, and independence). Participants were categorized into four groups: (a) "changed," where therapy had a meaningful impact on a person's life; (b) "connected," where therapy was valued primarily for companionship; (c) "complemental," where therapy complemented a participant's upward trajectory; and (d) "discordant," where therapy misaligned with participants' preference for impairment-based language work. This study suggests that it is feasible to adapt a psychological therapy for people with aphasia, who perceive it as valuable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to explore the impact of three early phases of renal dialysis, namely pre-dialysis, starting dialysis, and establishing dialysis, on dyadic relationships. Twenty UK-based dyads (20 male patients and their female partners) participated in semi-structured interviews and discussed the effects of dialysis on themselves and their relationship. Dyadic thematic analysis, facilitated by dyadic-level charting, integrated participants' experiences and enabled identification of patterns across dyads. We found that dialysis had positive and negative influences on identity, social relationships, and mental health, forming the themes: Prioritizing the Patient, Carrying the Burden, and Changing Identities. The final theme, Managing the Relationship, described how dyads prevented dialysis from negatively impacting their relationship. Dyadic-level charting provided a systematic examination of individual and dyadic experiences. These findings indicate that access to informational and support services for dyads as they prepare to start dialysis may minimize negative effects on their relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Psychological therapies should be delivered in psychiatric inpatient settings to people experiencing psychosis. However, inpatient populations present with complex needs and usually are admitted only briefly. This makes the delivery of psychological therapies for people experiencing psychosis particularly challenging. Our aim was to explore the adaptations required to deliver psychological therapies to this population from the perspective of inpatient psychological practitioners. Twelve participants were recruited, and a qualitative semistructured interview schedule was administered examining their perspectives on important factors required to deliver psychological interventions in this context. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three superordinate themes were identified: "crisis-focused psychological approaches," "working with and supporting the wider system," and "environmental adaptations." Traditional psychological therapies are a challenge to deliver in inpatient environments due to complex needs, essentiality of team working, and brief admission. Active aging, using the conventional sense of activity, might be difficult to achieve for people with chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP). Given that a large number of older people will develop CMP, it is important to consider a broader conceptualization of activity and how this might fit into discourses of aging. We report findings from a study of the experiences of chronic pain in the daily life of 60 older people. In this article we focus on the role and meanings of physical activity for those older people. We develop a typology of styles—deliberate, strategic, and natural—to show how people approached physical activity and how its meaning differed for individuals in different contexts and across their life course. We suggest a more balanced perspective of aging in which “slowing down” might also be a desirable outcome for some older people with CMP but is not incompatible with well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
