Biosocial pathogenesis is a critical new way of thinking about disease origin and progression because we need biosocial approaches to disease prevention and treatment. Is Different than Current Model of Disease Pathogenesis The current model of a strictly biological disease pathogenesis is wrong: it is insufficient to account for all of the factors that make individuals susceptible to disease, resilient when disease occurs, and variably responsive to treatment. Only by integrating biology with biography can we have a complete appreciation for disease pathogenesis, and a successful development of treatments that will create the maximum benefit for our patients [[28]]. Construction of a patient narrative (case history) is a core strategy in the care of patients. Recent advances in biomarker identification and digital sensors to monitor physiological and behavioral features have made constructing a case history more complex. Notably, however, although a biological profile is increasingly a part of the patient's profile, an analogous patient-based biographical (life experience) profile is typically overlooked. Evolving concepts such as allostasis and allostatic load refer to processes promoting stability of physiological systems in the presence of diverse life experiences. Integrating details of both biology and biography is a goal of "precision medicine." In this review, we describe how complex interactions between biology and biography affect disease risk and treatment response and highlight a strategy to develop narratives that establish the integration of biology and biography as the scientific basis for precision medicine. Graph Bruce McEwen, head of the Harold and Margaret Milliken Hatch Laboratory of Neuroendocrinology at the Rockefeller University, died suddenly after a brief illness on January 2, 2020. Bruce was a towering figure in neuroscience and an inspiration to many whose interest in the interface between biology and the way we live our lives were influenced by Bruce's research. Bruce early on showed a penchant, sustained over his career, for research ideas that strayed far from those of the Miller lab, ultimately culminating in the self-described label of "molecular sociologist" that Bruce used to signal his interest in how cell and molecular biology could be integrated with the social sciences. Moving toward a more elaborate and diverse set of ideas, Bruce's work on adrenal steroid hormone effects on the hippocampus and other limbic system brain areas attracted the attention of Eliot Stellar and his colleagues at University of Pennsylvania.
