The aim of the study was to calculate the cutoff scores on the Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire-20 Form B. 560 students completed the Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire-20 Form B and the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Using cutoff scores of the French or the original version of the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale as the standard, the participants were divided into alexithymic and non-alexithymic groups. The Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire-20 Form B cutoff scores selection was based on the sensitivity, specificity, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, and the analyses of the clinical data. The most appropriate cutoff scores for determining the absence and presence of alexithymia ranged from 43 to 45 and from 50 to 53, respectively.

Kraepelinian schizophrenia, defined as a severe form of the disease, is characterized by a high number of negative symptoms and less depression, respectively. The relationship between anhedonia and Kraepelinian schizophrenia was explored. Depressive and trait anticipatory and consummatory anhedonia were compared in Kraepelinian ( n = 10, M age 49.2 yr., SD = 10.8) and non-Kraepelinian ( n = 23, M age = 42.7 yr., SD = 10.8) patients with schizophrenia. The Kraepelinian group had more anticipatory and consummatory anhedonia than the non-Kraepelinian group. The two groups did not differ on depressive anhedonia or depression.

Long-term reliability of the Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire (FCQ) was investigated in two follow-up studies of participants with psychosis using a test-retest method. In the first study ( N = 56), the duration of the follow-up ranged from 6 months to 2 years; Spearman rho was .62 for the abridged (18 items) Spanish version of the questionnaire. In Study 2 ( N = 21), in participants with stable schizophrenia, the follow-up ranged from 8 to 11 years; test-retest Spearman rho was .83 for the French version of the questionnaire. Subjective experiences could constitute, in psychosis-prone people, traits or markers of psychotic vulnerability.

This was a prospective follow-up study of suicidal patients to assess the association of anhedonia, depression, and completed suicides. Survival analysis as well as Cox's regression makes it possible to weigh the influence of variables. A cohort of 106 patients (81 women, 25 men, M age = 33 yr., SD=9.9) admitted to medical or surgical departments after a suicide attempt was followed during a 6.5-yr. mean observation period. In total, 6.7% of patients completed suicide. High proportion of male subjects (71.4%) and low anhedonia, assessed on the Physical Anhedonia Scale, decreased survival time of the cohort and characterized subjects who deceased by suicide. These results suggested that the people who completed suicide were characterized by low anhedonia. Further research is needed on people who attempt suicide and present with specific psychiatric diagnoses.

For more than 30 years, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) has been used to measure the multidimensional aspects of empathy. But the 28-item, 4-factor model of Davis (1980 ) is currently contested because of methodological issues and for theoretical reasons. Confirmatory (CFA) and exploratory factor analyses (EFA) were applied in two French-speaking Belgian student samples (1,244 participants in the first and 729 in the second study) to test this model and to propose a shortened version. A non-optimal fit was found with respect to the CFI value (Study 1). By splitting the student group into two random subsamples, EFA and then CFA were used to propose a 15-item, 4-factor model with good fit indices. A CFA on the second student group (Study 2) replicated this model. Results are discussed considering the influence of social desirability response bias, an absence of strong invariance across sex and the usefulness of self-report scales to measure empathy.

Type D personality—characterized by negative affectivity and social inhibition—and anhedonia have independently been found to be significantly associated with depression or suicidal ideation in the general population or in psychiatric subjects. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between Type D personality and anhedonia in a population of 204 university students (102 men, 102 women) after controlling for depression as a confounding variable. Type D personality was evaluated using the Type D scale, anhedonia with the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale, and depression with the Beck Depression Inventory–II. Significant correlations were found between social inhibition and anhedonia before and after adjustment for depression. In women, a Sobel test indicated significant mediation by social inhibition of the relationship between anhedonia and depression. Results suggested that the social inhibition component of Type D personality could constitute a poor prognosis factor.

This study investigated the prevalence of psychoaffective immaturity and tested the hypothesis that it associated with bad prognosis. For 135 psychiatric patients meeting criteria for personality, neurotic, affective, substance use, or psychotic disorders emotional immaturity was rated using the 1985 diagnostic criteria of Doutheau, Dubertret, Moutin, and Barrois. 58 subjects (42.96%, 95% Confidence Interval: 34.61–51.31) were classified as immature. Scores of the Nonimmature and Immature groups were compared for the Beck Depression Inventory and the Professional and Social Functioning Assessment Scale. Scores were, respectively, significantly higher and lower in those patients classified as Immature than those who were classified Nonimmature. When depression was controlled by a covariance analysis, the mean difference on the Professional and Social Functioning Assessment Scale remained significant. It appears that psychoaffective immaturity is a factor associated with severity of psychiatric disorders.

The aim of the study was to set alexithymia cutoff scores on the 20-item Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire-20 Form B. Alexithymia is a clinical construct describing individuals who have difficulty identifying and reporting their specific emotions. 63 subjects meeting the DSM–IV criteria for alcohol dependence completed the questionnaire and the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale. Using cutoff scores for the latter, subjects were divided into alexithymic and nonalexithymic subgroups. Taking into account the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive positive value, several potential Bermond-Vorst questionnaire scores were tested. Using the Younden formula (Sensitivity + Specificity − 1), score of 52 was the most appropriate cutoff score for the Bermond-Vorst-20 to indicate the presence of alexithymia in these male alcoholics.

The purpose of the study was to examine the rate of alexithymia as measured by the Toronto Alexithymia Scale in a sample of severely obese subjects, as well as the relationships between this dimension and five other dimensions found in obesity: depression, anhedonia, external locus of control, impulsivity, and interpersonal dependency. A second purpose was to test the hypothesis that alexithymia could be a prognosis factor in severely obese subjects seeking bariatric surgery. 49 severely obese and 40 psychiatric patients presenting mood, neurotic, or personality disorders participated. Analyses showed a significantly lower rate of alexithymia in severely obese (42.9%) than in psychiatric patients (67.5%). Interpersonal dependency was the main predictor of alexithymia in the two samples and impulsivity as well as anhedonia were independent predictors of alexithymia only in the severely obese sample. Preoperative Body Mass Index was the sole predictor of 1-yr. postoperative Body Mass Index in severely obese subjects receiving surgical treatment.

In two samples of 150 and 310 schizophrenic patients, scores for hallucinations were significantly associated with scores on disorganization.
