Psychotic features have been considered the main determinant of psychosocial function in schizophrenia. However, other variables are likely to affect dysfunction in these patients. The authors’ hypothesis is that personality traits in outpatients with chronic schizophrenia differ from traits found in the healthy population and may be associated with disability in this disorder. A total of 62 patients with schizophrenia were evaluated with the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ). Psychotic features were measured with the help of the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Disability was assessed with the Disability Assessment Schedule (DAS). A total of 43 healthy subjects were used as controls for personality measurements. Normative data for the study population was also used to evaluate results in patients. Patients with schizophrenia had higher levels of neuroticism (median in percentile 65) and lower levels of extraversion (median in percentile 25) than the healthy population. Results of the TPQ showed higher harm avoidance and lower reward dependence levels compared to the healthy population. After multiple regression tests, negative symptoms were the strongest predictor of disability in patients with schizophrenia. Neuroticism contributed independently to the DAS overall behavior and global judgement subscales scores (more negative symptoms and higher neuroticism resulted in worse functioning), but not to the social role subscale. Outpatients with chronic schizophrenia showed high levels of neuroticism, harm avoidance, and introversion. Abstract School refusal is a phenomenon that first drew attention in Japan around 1960 and it remains one of the major issues in child psychiatry today. Moreover, it is now said that there exists a large group of latent school refusers currently attending school but harboring feelings of school avoidance. To address this issue, a questionnaire survey was conducted on students enrolled in a junior high and high school affiliated with the Nagoya University School of Education. The questionnaire consisted of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), a scale for evaluating feelings of school avoidance (School Avoidance Scale), and a scale for assessment of personality characteristics associated with school refusal (School Refusal Personality Scale). The subjects were 425 first-year junior high to second-year high school students. Factor analysis of each scale revealed the CDI to consist of three factors: ‘core depression’, ‘feelings of interpersonal maladaptation’, and ‘self-revulsion’, and the School Avoidance Scale to consist of two factors: ‘school dislike’, and ‘school avoidance’. The School Refusal Personality Scale consisted of three factors: ‘obsessive–compulsive’, ‘passive/unsocial’, and ‘socially introverted’. Mean CDI score and standard deviation (SD) was 19.44 ± 7.49, and that for ‘feelings of school avoidance’ was 20.18 ± 5.61. The two subordinate factors of the School Avoidance Scale were intimately associated with both ‘feelings of interpersonal maladaptation’ and ‘core depression’ of the CDI, and negatively correlated with the ‘obsessive–compulsive’ factor of the School Refusal Personality Scale. Abstract The perception of social support may be a trait-like construct stemming from the current personality and early environment as well as a summation of the actual support perceived. A total of 220 community individuals were examined for the effects of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) items and early life experience at home and outside on the number of sources of perceived social support and satisfaction with that support. High extraversion and low neuroticism scores of the EPQ were correlated with the availability of support only in women, while high maternal care and low maternal overprotection in childhood were correlated with the satisfaction with support only in men. Availability of support was also correlated with some types of early life events. The quantity and quality of perception of social support differ in their links to personality and early environment, and may be, to some extent, explainable in terms of them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This study investigated the relationships of age of onset, antisocial history and general psychopathological traits measured by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) in Japanese alcoholics (n = 84). A 2 (earlier vs later onset) × 2 (antisocial vs non-antisocial) multivariate analysis of covariance showed that age of onset had a significant correlation with some subscales of the MMPI such as L (lie), Sc (schizophrenia), and Si (social introversion), whereas history of antisocial behavior had no significant correlation with any MMPI clinical subscales. This result indicated that age of onset was a more significant variable than was antisocial history with regard to the current general psychopathological traits on MMPI in Japanese alcoholics. AbstractIn order to clarify the influences of family environment on the development of personality traits, 150 children (104 males and 46 females, mean age 13.2 ± 2.4 years) who had been interviewed at the Child Guidance Clinic in Osaka were investigated. From 13 behavioral characteristics (activity, talkativeness, sociability, social skills, rule-keeping, will, aggression, emotional control, imagination, anxiety, maturity, intelligence, and neuroticism), factor analysis identified three personality traits: extraversion, maturity, and intellect. The effects of family environment (maternal and paternal participation in child rearing before and after 4 years of age, child-rearing style, parental relationship, sibling relationship, number of siblings, birth order, and socioeconomic status) on these personality traits were examined based on a structural equation model. The results found, first, that extraversion was negatively associated with overprotection/interference and with maternal participation in child rearing. Maturity correlated with high socioeconomic status, appropriate child-rearing style, and paternal participation in child rearing. Intellect was related to high socioeconomic status and maternal participation in child rearing. Second, path analysis with selected variables revealed that 8% of variance in extraversion, 14% in maturity, and 10% in intellect was due to family environment. To clarify the effects of anxiety-related personality traits on sleep patterns, polysomnographic examinations (PSG) were performed over 4 consecutive nights on normal humans who tested within the low- or high-anxiety ranges. The subjects consisted of two groups of six male university students who scored either less than 45 points (low-anxiety group) or more than 55 points (high-anxiety group) on the Spielberger’s State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Compared to the levels of sleep change in the high-anxiety group, the low-anxiety group exhibited a greater change in REM sleep and stage 2 sleep. The REM sleep in the low-anxiety group was shorter on the first and second nights compared to the third and fourth nights, and the stage 2 sleep was longer on the first night than on the remaining three nights. Thus, the low-anxiety group showed a first-night effect followed by partial recovery on the second night, while the high-anxiety group exhibited no obvious first-night effect. These results suggest that there is a difference in sleep patterns, assessed by consecutive PSG, between those with low- and high-anxiety traits, and that anxiety-related personality traits attenuate the occurrence of the first-night effect, reflecting a lower adaptability to a novel environment.
